Book Description
From Ancient Egyptian frescoes to the Renaissance masters, from French Impressionists to American Abstract Expressionists, this highly browsable guide embraces all cultures and every style of painting from 4,000 BC to the present. A visually arresting reference for art lovers and students, it provides a truly comprehensive worldwide gazeteer of paintings organized chronologically by date of completion. Each entry includes the history of the painting, information about the artist or artistic movement, the current location of the painting (all are on view to the public), as well as other details. The works are also indexed by artist and by title, making for easy cross-referencing. Included are popular paintings, key works that are the most breathtaking for their extraordinary power and beauty, paintings that were turning points in the history of art, and rediscovered masterpieces, making 1001 Paintings You Must See Before You Die an art museum in its own right.

Home schooling.......2007-09-28
Purchasing this book is like taking a yearlong course in the history of painting. The reproductions are excellent, the essays are filled with information, the paintings are not always the best known, but certainly are excellent examples of each artist's works. A definite purchase.
Nice Choices.......2007-09-23
Nice choices selected for a good sampling of artworks. Arguably there were inclusions of varying taste and some masterpieces were excluded but the book delivers as advertised and is worth the price.
A must for lovers of art!.......2007-09-18
This book is a look at 1001 paintings that the author feels should be on any art-lovers "must see" list. They are arranged in chronilogical order. The first paintings were made in ancient Egypt. The last of the paintings were painted last year. Each painting comes with a paragraph underneath that gives a thumbnail sketch of the artist and the circumstances of how he created each masterpiece.
For the most part it is an entertaining read. The paintings are for the most part dazzling, and the facts underneath are fun to read as well, even if you don't always agree with author's interpertations of the paintings. It is a very long book, though, so feel free to flip to your favorites!
Helpful Catalog for Finding What You Like.......2007-09-15
The concept behind this book is an intriguing one: If you had seen most of the best paintings in the world, which 1001 would you recommend that others see if at all possible? My initial reaction was that there probably aren't 1001 paintings that I would recommend to everyone else.
With that perspective in mind, I first read through the book to identify which paintings would be on my list. I came up with 72. Almost all of those were on my mental list when I started reading the book. I was also missing about 100 of my favorites, but few of the artists were omitted. So if I had been new to paintings and became familiar with the 65 artists who did the 72 paintings, I would have eventually uncovered almost all of the other 100. That experience confirmed my impression that this book would be of most value to those who have seen relatively few great paintings and want to get a sense of what they like.
The images were quite well done for such small reproductions. Most paintings are represented on one page (a few are two to a page) with the minimum size being about one inch by two inches. But the printing was done well enough that you get a decent idea of the painting. I have seen more than 600 of these works in person and found that the reproductions often looked better than the originals: So don't be too disappointed when you see the real thing. Naturally, others look at lot better in person: You cannot capture the Sistine Chapel's paintings very well in a small image, for example.
The nice surprise for me was to find that the book contains works from private collections, several of which were new to me. This made me feel like I was visiting a blockbuster traveling show, especially when the works were by some of my favorite artists.
One of the most impressive aspects of the book was its equal emphasis over 1400 to the present with some representation even earlier than that. As a result, you get a good cross-section of different styles among Western artists (other artists are underrepresented, as they are in major Western museums).
Those who want to travel to see these works will be pleased to see that their locations are noted. There is a missed opportunity to index the works by museum to make trip planning easier. But most good museums today have extensive online catalogs of images that you can scan to plan what you want to see in advance. Simply jot down museums you should visit, but haven't been to yet. Then go online to see which art there will appeal to you.
I would love to see someone take this same concept and apply it to each century of paintings, sculptures, and graphic art.
Take a good look!
A Book With A Gimmick Format That Is Actually a Smart Survey!.......2007-09-08
The very title of this book will probably offend serious art lovers as well as the cover art that strains to imitate Magritte. But don't be fooled by the packaging in this case. This is a fine little volume that covers an enormous variety of paintings through time and is designed in a format that places one painting per page (though the page are not large) with an accompanying commentary on the painting, the artist, the historical content and some astute remarks by a staff of well informed writers.
Ancient paintings as well as contemporary paintings are in this collection of 'must sees' and actually each of the selections could well qualify for the designation of the title. What the book does not do is provide a travelogue to guide the reader to the locations of each of the works, but it does present a survey of great art, succinctly distilled in well chosen word descriptions, that proves t be a valuable introduction to the works considered by many to be the great moments in art history. This would be a fine book for young or new art lovers, a volume that would interest those who fear the magnitude of the realm of art history here made accessible - like cliff notes! A great idea for a gift - for other and for your own library. Grady Harp, September 07

Book Description
Over a summers weekend in 1949 -- but not our 1949 -- the upper-crust "Farthing set," the group that overthrew Churchill and negotiated peace with Hitler eight years before, enjoys a country retreat. Lucy is a minor daughter of two politicians in the group; since her marriage to a London Jew, relations have been strained. So shes surprised when she and husband David are invited for the weekend. Then, overnight, a different member of the set is found murdered, with abundant signs that the killing was ritualistic. As the authorities begin to investigate, it becomes clear to Lucy and David that they were invited in order to pin the murder on David. But whoever devised this conspiracy didnt reckon on the man from Scotland Yard being someone with his own private reasons for sympathizing with outcastsand looking beyond the obvious. As the trap slowly shuts on Lucy and David, they begin to see a way out -- a way fraught with peril in a darkening world. More than an alternate-history story, more than a drawing-room mystery, Farthing is a compelling story of encroaching darkness and the people who ultimately decide to resist it.

Farthing worth-less.......2007-10-01
The dialogue is so badly written I couldn't force myself to get past page 10.
Built me up and let me down.......2007-09-24
I won't summarize the plot as this has been done by a number of reviewers.
I found this book very intriguing at first. As a devotee of the English drawing room mystery genre and the WWII alternate history thriller genre, I was thrilled to see these two genres combined. But as the book wore on, the mystery did not seem to go anywhere. The detective wasn't doing much detecting that I could see. Of course you like the two main characters and root for them to get away but by the time they go on the run the book is practically over, so you don't get much "thriller" either.
When the book ended, I felt very let down and dissatisfied.
I also got tired of all the gay characters. It didn't add anything to the story and probably would have been much better if only the Inspector were gay, instead of David and Hugh and the murderer and Mummy and Suky, et. al
England for the English.......2007-09-06
Farthing is an alternate history novel of England, similar in timeframe to SS-GB but with one big difference: the English and Germans had come to terms in 1941; the Continent had been left to Hitler and England to the English. In this novel, it's not easy to see which landmass got the better bargain.
At first it seems that England was the natural winner. Since the Peace, England has had a smooth course. The Farthing Set -- the group that took Hess's overture for peace and ran with it -- are comfortably ensconced as the saviours of England. While things do not always go their way politically, they've become a permanent force to be reckoned with.
As the story opens James Thirkie, the official leader of the Farthing Set, is visiting Farthing, the childhood home of Lucy Kahn. Lucy herself is not happy being there. She married a Jewish man and was never forgiven by her mother, although her father gave his blessing. Her mother has insisted on their coming, however, and Lucy's husband David hopes that it signals a change in her mother's coolness toward him. The visit has not been a success and Lucy is as confused as to why they were invited as she is happy to be going home to London that Sunday afternoon.
Unfortunately for her and David, James Thirkie has been killed overnight. He was found with a yellow star pinned to his chest with a dagger, and suspicion naturally turns to David. It seems to Inspector Carmichael from Scotland Yard a clumsy attempt to influence the direction of his investigation, and he perseveres in ignoring the bait dangling so tantalizingly close.
This is a marvelous political murder mystery in which religion, station, political stance, and even sexual orientation all play a part in how the mystery is unfolded. That England would have refused to fight and instead accommodated Hitler in his conquest of Europe seems implausible at first but every detail fits neatly into a mosaic of accommodation and the birth of England's own version of fascism seems the natural result of actions taken over the Peace years.
This book doesn't read at all like Science Fiction, which is where I found it. I'm torn as to whether it should be shelved in General Fiction, however, because I could easily see someone reading this and believing it to be a true history of England's war, it's that detailed and believable. I think this is the first Jo Walton book I've read and it certainly won't be the last.
A very disturbing Alternate history.......2007-07-15
This book shows what made have happened and how the world would be different if Rudolf Hess's Peace Mission had succeeded. It is frightening to think how much potential both the United States and Great Britain had for fascism during World War Two and how much similar potential both countries have for fascism today.
Not quite Cliveden, but very good........2007-05-06
A murder mystery set in an alternative history in which World War II was brought to an end in 1941 (as a result of Rudolf Hess's harebrained 'mission'). Britain is moving towards fascism under the influence of the 'Farthing' set (based on the Cliveden set in actual history) of conservative aristocrats. A story of frightening possibilities, and one relevant to us today.
Two small quibbles: a knighthood does not disqualify from membership in the House of Commons, as the author suggests; and the bird on the farthing was, as far as I can recall, a wren rather than a robin.
Book Description
This book explores the tensions between markets, democracy, neoliberalism, state restructuring and citizenship. In this regard, the balance of citizen rights has been shifted away from providing citizens with social rights to privileging the property rights of private, mostly transnational, firms. Bolivian Stalemate throws light on the reasons and processes behind the rising opposition in country after country in Latin America to the currently fashionable, internationally prescribed economic development strategy of neoliberalism.
Customer Reviews:
Terrific.......2007-09-29
This is an excellent, comprehensive account of the forces that lead to the ascencion of Evo Morales. Morales himself is not the focus, instead the authors examine the history of liberalism (as a social order) and neoliberalism (as an economic order) in Bolivia. They aptly relate the effects of liberalism to the clamour for change.

Book Description
Periodontal disease affects the mouths of the entire adult population to some degree and causes severe disease in 10 per cent. This is a concise account of the pathological processes involved in periodontal disease, its causes and progression, based on advances in contemporary research. A rational approach to treatment is presented on the basis of these processes. A broad overview of periodontal disease is followed by accounts of the periodontium in health and disease. The book then deals with the micro-organisms implicated in periodontal disease and evaluates their significance. The host responses to factors present in dental plaque are discussed, followed by an account of the interactions between bacteria and the host which cause tissue damage. This leads to a consideration of the different clinical manifestations of the disease, including those associated with HIV infection. In the final chapter, a rational approach to treatment is presented, based on an understanding of the disease mechanisms discussed in the book. The biologically-orientated approach is particularly suitable for dental undergraduates, and those preparing for the Fellowship Examinations of the Royal Colleges. It will be also be valuable for every practising dentist who wishes to update their knowledge of this important and developing subject. No other book deals with the aetiology and pathogenesis of periodontal disease in such a comprehensive, yet straightforward way, making extensive use of diagrams and summary tables to make the subject more easily accessible.

The best and only comprehensive book on the science........1999-04-02
Want to know what psychologists, rather than philosophers, have to say about consciousness? Want a quick, authoritative survey of scientific research on sleep and dreams, hypnosis, meditation? This is the best and only comprehensive book reviewing scientific research on consciousness and various altered states of consciousness. It's a little old now, and in need of revision, but it's still the best place to start.

a great introduction to real estate sales!.......2001-07-03
I just earned my real estate sales agent certification in New York state, and I found this book to be EXTREMELY helpful! The agents and brokers in my office are always too busy to show me the ropes, so I decided to teach myself. This was the best resource for me on all aspects of real estate sales, and it was very easy to read and understand. Many of the scenarios discessed here haven't come up for me yet, but I know that when I try to close a tough deal, I'll turn back to this book again and again.
