Blueprints Family Medicine.......2007-09-05
Its a great overview, but definitely not detailed enough for the SHELF exam. Read it before you actually begin studying.
Great purchase!.......2006-11-04
I am a 3rd year med student on rotations. This book was extremely helpful during my family med rotation! I will also use it to study for my 2nd series of board exams! Quick, concise, easy read, good reference material!
This is THE review .......2006-06-03
This book rocks! It covers the most common ailments seen in family medicine and concisely describes the pathophysiology, clinical manifestations, differential diagnoses, diagnostic evaluation, and treatment for each one. Studying from this book helps you put everything together before the family medicine shelf exam by giving you all the essential information with 50 sample questions at the end. It's an excellent review and a great reference to have for the clinical years.

Caution.......2006-05-20
I found myself looking up "wrong" answers and finding disagreements between this study guide and standard reference texts. I stopped using it early in Chapter 1 (I.M.).
Great cram tool!.......2006-01-16
I am a 36 year old physician who used this book to help prepare for board recertification, and I can honestly say that using this book helped. It is very well divided into the different subjects and has a great sampling of questions that were consistent with the questions I saw on the exam. I not only passed but did very well on the exam! This is a very sound and solid investment!
good review for fp boards.......2004-06-23
This provides a quick and easy way for doing a board review. Helped me a lot.
Family Medicine Certification Review.......2004-06-17
Overall a solid book. It has a few errors, but these are usually a matter of a poorly worded question. The answers are usually brief and address only the question asked. They don't give much of an overview of the topic. These answers did stimulate me to look things up on my own which is good -- but also bad because the text's answers were not complete enough. This seems to be a straight forward do the questions and see the answers type book.

Changing view on assessment.......2006-01-29
this book really worked to broaden my definition, view and understanding of assessment. as with another book by this author, the information did become repetitive, but remained helpful. I really enjoyed the variety of examples on how to formally and informally incorporate assessment in the classroom.

Excellent review.......2003-05-21
This book has a lot of important information that anyone taking the USLME should know. It has pretty good questions and answers and I like how the book explains the various USMLE topics. It's much easier reading through this book then some long textbooks. However, I also used the following which is also available on amazon.com:
Microbiology Study Guide: Key Review Questions and Answers by Patrick Leonardi
This questions were on target with the type of questions asked on the microbiology section of the boards. Get both books.
Helps to review small importand details.......2003-03-10
I have just passed Step 1 and I do believe that this book helped me to get a good score. Despite the fact that the questions in this book do not mimic the exam's questions they highlight many details, which may be missed even in good review books. If you use only one book to study one subject, you will definitely miss some important facts. To cover those facts I did the following. First, I studied the subject using the main review book and answered questions in it. Than I answered questions in this book and always found missed important details, which were not mentioned in my main textbooks but were covered here. In other words, I would advise to read this book before the exam.
Not up to date.......2001-10-31
This review book is not up to date, specifically the questions are in a format nowhere near USMLE's exam. Memorize the newest edition of First Aid.
Good if you have time, but better exist.......1999-05-15
I like this book. I really do. However, there are better books out there (Princeton Review and J&S, for example). The tests are hard, a bit too detailed in their demands, and not as applicable to the new testing format. Still, it's a good way to study.
Excellent question and answer content........1997-09-01
The book gives you tremendous amount of practice with questions covering an organized amount of subject matter while giving complete and easy to understand answers. The intergration of the answers into multiple subject matter is one of the books best aspects. If you are preparing for the USMLE this book is a must
Book Description

Good Buy- But not complete.......2005-10-04
This is a good source for practice questions for the USMLE, but it shouldn't be your only study tool. I really liked the anatomy section and thought that the biochem section could have been better. This book provides questions to practice with and explains the answers, but other than that it doesn't have any review material.

What a great Role Model.......2007-06-13
This is a great book that I bought for my Tween-age daughter, it held her interest so well that she went back and re reads them, I read them as well and found even an adult male could enjoy and relate to the characters. I especially like the many life lessons and moral that are weaved through the book they are presented in a non threatening no preachy way, I am not sure that my Daughter new she was being educated while she was entertained. I thought many of the school ( even though it was Knight school) issues that Kel and her friends face were very applicable to a 14 year old about to face High school and in the troughs of a Puberty, with out being too edgy or preachy. Time well spent for anyone.
The only girl that could.......2007-05-23
Following the footsteps of the heroine Alanna, Keladry of Mindelan wants to be a Knight. She is accepted to page's training, but is placed on probation until she can prove that she is just one of the boys. Determined, she begins impressively, but by no means easily. Taught early in the Yamani ways, she is already capable of fighting and working hard, despite what the training master, Lord Wyldon, thinks. Kel fends off the other boys' pranks and teasings knowing she would not succomb; she could not. Her future relies on her perfection.
This is a great intro to the Protector of the Small series. I read "Lady Knight" first, and truthfully, this was not what I was expecting (I definitely wish I'd read them in order). But I was still blown away by the confidence this gives to girls, and the strength of Kel's character. Sure, she is not without flaws, but it's nice to see modern girls have someone to relate to in a fantasy enriched medieval novel about change and perseverance. And I'm not even 12...
"Girls are fragile, more emotional, easier to frighten." WRONG!.......2007-04-01
Keladry of Mindalen is a ten-year-old girl who dreams of becoming a lady knight like the kings champion Alanna the Lioness. When Kel gets a letter back from the palace that states if she wishes to become a knight she must go on a year probation to prove herself worthy of becoming an actual page. Keladry is of course shocked. The law was made more than ten years ago that girls had the right to become pages. It's just that Keladry was the first one to have the guts to do it. But...Kel is stubborn and accepts the probation and goes to the palace.
"Girls are fragile, more emotional, easier to frighten. They are not as strong in the arms and shoulders as men. They tire easily. The girl would get any warriors who serve with her killed on some dark night." Wyldon, the trainer of the pages said.
Um...yeah, right. Wyldon is going to see right away that Kel is not like that at all! In fact he will be surprised...
Read this enchanting book, FIRST TEST.
4 very different books in this series.......2007-03-28
I won't go over what everyone else has already said. I will just point out that the 4 books in this series change in much the way that Kel is changing.
As others have pointed out, First Test is a book about life in a boarding school. It is similar to Harry Potter. In fact, the school bully reminds me of Malfoy.
There are some scary events in First Test but not too scary.
While First Test would be appropriate for grade school readers, in Page Kel reaches puberty so parents should have talked about that before kids read it, e.g., tell them about periods. The topic is handled tastefully.
I found the scary sections of Page emotionally scarier.
In the 3rd book, Squire, Kel learns that being a knight is not all about having sword fights with bad guys. Not very much exciting happens. That is the point.
In Squire, Kel is definitely having lots of sexual feelings. Parents may want to think about that before starting young readers on the series. (But everything about Kel is always honorable.)
Pierce finished the 4th book, Lady Knight, in the immediate aftermath of 9/11, blocks from the still smoldering World Trade Center. She writes that this had an impact on the book. It is much more violent than the first 3. And ugly, e.g., children are murdered and used as weapons of war. The bad guy is a psychopathic monster. There are strong hints that he is a pedophile. In the end, good triumphs, at least temporarily, over evil but at a terrible cost.
This would be an excellent series for a teen or preteen thinking about being a soldier.
Not your average hero........2007-02-08
Tamora Pierce should be saluted for her many accomplished entries into the world of fantasy, not least of which is her steadfast reliance on capable, motivated, realistic FEMALE lead characters. Modern fantasy readers (especially us girls) have much to be grateful for - until pioneers like Pierce and McCaffrey broke through the 'crystal ceiling' seeing a HEROINE was achingly rare.
Besides her realization that ladies also like to have plucky role models, Pierce remains a talented writer. Fans of the Lioness Quartet will appreciate this "sequel" (but don't expect too much of Alanna - she's forbidden to speak to Kel!). Newcomers to the world of Tortall will find themselves welcomed, and making quick sense of a fairly traditional 'sword and sorcery' realm.
Other raters have noted the relative lightness of the tale, and the easy challenges that Kel must overcome. While I too have the same thoughts, I must remind readers that while these books can be read and enjoyed by ALL age groups, they were ORIGINALLY intended for the pre-teen group.
Personally, thinking back to childhood, the challenges seem quite age-appropriate, and could even relate to modern challenges. Kel sees and handles bullies, thinks about fairness and moral standards, sticks up for the underdog, and also deals with a personal phobia. Not bad for a 12 year old.
Other readers have taken issue with the 'flaws' in the medieval or derivative nature of the book. Even as an adult, however, people relate best to what they understand, and forcing a book for pre-teens into a 'realistic' portrayal of medieval society would be tiresome and BORING. Also, I find the inclusion of the Yamani (Japanese) culture to be refreshing, as it is treated as a source of strength for Kel, as well as a learning experience in dealing with culture differences.
As always, Pierce has done a wonderful job creating a girl-friendly world (even for a 26 year old girl!), written in a refreshing and engaging manner, without dumbing-down or condescending to her audience. Bravo.
** Very conservative parents, or those carefully monitoring their children's reading before "the talk" may wish to read this series (as well as the Alanna quartet, or ANY Pierce book) before letting their children start. As Kel grows older (the later books), her concerns naturally turn to teenage matters, and Pierce does not mince words. I found it still appropriate, and even sweet, but I know people are often careful of such things. Also later in the series, a fleeting mention is made of homosexuality. Finally, the later depictions of magic for defense and healing, and the use of necromancy (by the evil forces) are intense and fairly graphic. It is cruel to allow a child to start a series, then ban it later for containing information you'd rather not deal with. If these things bother you, be aware of them from the start and find other means to entertain your children.

Book Description
Gail Carson Levine charmed the world with Ella Enchanted, her spirited retelling of the Cinderella story. Now this award-winning author turns her attention to two more classic fairy tales, and deftly turns them upside down and inside out with her trademark wit and hilarity.
In The Fairy's Mistake, two very different sisters have two very different encounters with the fairy Ethelinda. Rosella is kind and helpful. Her reward: Jewels and gems tumble out of her mouth whenever she speaks. Myrtle is rude and spiteful. Her punishment: Bugs and vipers slither out of her mouth. The fairy Ethelinda feels she's meted out justice just right--until she discovers Rosella has been locked up by a greedy prince and Myrtle is having the time of her life!
In The Princess Test, King Humphrey has decided its time for his son, Prince Nicholas, to marry. But he must make sure the bride is a real princess. So he devises a series of princess tests, designed to weed out the phonies and the fakes. Meanwhile, Nicholas has fallen in love with Lorelei, a mere blacksmith's daughter. She's no princess, but he wants to marry her all the same--but how will she ever pass the terrible tests?
In these first two delightfully entertaining, laugh-out-loud Princess Tales, Gail Levine gently spoofs the notion that fairies are always right and that tests can never prove a persons worth, but holds fast to the notion that true love will always win in the end.

A summary of the book princess test.......2006-11-07
The Princess Test is a vary easy book to read and vary intertaning for boys and girls. Make sure you read the "epilogue!" Because the ending of the story is in those two little pages.

This is a wonderful book. When a blacksmith's wife dies, he needs to go away so he hires a maid to take care of his daughter, Lorelei. The maid does not like her at all, so she finds a way to get rid of Lorelei. The maid says that they are going on a picnic and leaves her. It starts to rain, so Lorelei needs to find a place to stay. She finds a castle and discovers that there's a princess test going on. Read the book to find out what happens. This book is great! I think everyone should read it!!!
This is a great book to read!!!!!!.......2006-03-16
Have you ever known someone who was spoiled rotten and then one day her most precious possession is taken away? The Princess Test by Gaul Levine tells a story about a young girl name Lorelei who always had her way in everything. But then her mom died and she was very heartbroken. Lorelei is a really life like character that keeps the reader involved with very strong emotions like she have filling for people if someone is sad and she sees it she would help out just like when her mother pass away and Trudy that watches her did everything for her for example if her bed was not made right Trudy would have to fix it over and over and until it was just right for her. Lorelei is a girl who doesn't know how to do anything. Before her mother passed away, she didn't teach Lorelei how to do anything like cook or wash clothes but when the women Trudy had her wash a dish because Lorelei ask to help Lorelei had gotten a big rash. Her mother did everything she could to keep a smile on Lorelei's face which was a very nice thing to do for her daughter, but now that she is gone, Lorelei is helpless.
This book is very good. I liked it because I'm really into stories that have love in it. The way I felt about this book is that I really have feelings about what's going to happen next and I really like when that happens it kind of have something like who's going to win because it has a lot of women that the prince has to pick to marry. But I think I already know who the prince wants to marry. The role the prince is this young man that bumps into a young girl and they both start to talk to each other but the prince starts to like her. But the prince also has to consider who his parents want him to marry. Would if his parents like the girl he falls in love with? What if his parents don't like the person that he likes? It's very good and what I'm trying to say as she was younger and she was very picky about things she never grew out of it she still the same and what I'm trying to say about that do you t think the prince is going to like her steel if he sees how she really is.how do you think she will act if she gets picked as a princess, do you think everything will have to go perfect for her? Does everything have to go just the way she wants it? I really have a lot of feelings about this book so this is a really good book it's and I think and I think who ever read it is going to enjoy it.
The Princess Test.......2005-10-28
Ii the book, the author of this book is Gail Carson Levine. It is a fiction book, but it is really a great book.Lorelei is the name of the girl who is going to become a princess in the story. The Chief Royal Chambermaid had fallen in love with her. They were going to make her a test to check if she is the rigth girl for him.My favorite part of this book is when they put 20 mattresses in her bed, and in the bottom there was a pea.I didn't like when she used to cry for everything when it wasnt perfect. My favorite character is Lorelei because she will be a princess. The scene that meant a lot to me was pg.27.Its they are planning to do a pea test to her, so they could find out if she was a princess. This book is really great and its so romantic. But why did they had to put a lot of mattresses and only 1 pea. This book great for the princess lovers. I hope you enjoy this book as I did.

unusual in the intensity of charactization . . ........1999-09-30
The characters are what make this story one of the best I have ever read. Maigrey, Tusk, and Sagan are some of the most powerful characters I have ever found. Weis excells in constructing an immediate sense of the situations in King's Test. The politician Robes is a villian everyone loves to hate. Especially fascinating is the history of the galaxy that precedes the story. Unusually, Weis seems to have three or four main characters, instead of one. Dion Starfire would qualify as the central figure, but the others are so powerfully written that they almost seem to take over the book. References to Milton, Plato, Dickens enrich an already thought-provoking work. After Lost King, I couldn't sleep until I had read the other three books. I would suggest this book to anyone with an interest in futuristics, or for anyone just looking for a great read.

Customer Reviews:
Does creative means to read the author 's mind?.......2006-09-03
I didn't like this book because I was looking for another kind of puzzles, not the same old ones. "Out of the box" means to me to think in a new way,or to see it differently, but this books asks me to guess or to read author's mind.
A feast of new ideas!.......2005-12-14
The main basis of Lloyd's puzzles is finding an alternative way of interpreting a scene and this collection is a worthwhile challenge for those who like to sit calmly and wait for inspiration. It is refreshing to see a puzzle designer with new ideas and I heartily recommend buying it.
Learn to think differently.......2005-11-26
This is a good book. It contains some sets of question to be answered. Try to figure those questions out and you may be surprised with the answer given at the Answer Key section.
At the first few questions, I found all my guesses are wrong. The answer was unpredictable and unusual. After answering half of the questions in this book, I can answer the next questions better. "Learn from your own mistake."
This books teach me to think differently, think outside the box. We are taught not many creativity lessons at school. Mostly the subjects are strongly drill our logic. That's why some people think this book is useless, crap, etc. In fact, this is a good way to unveil the potential in you.
Working out was never so fun!.......2005-07-20
Working things out that is. I found Lloyds puzzle books to be incredibly entertaining and really helped me think outside the box. This is actually not an unheard of phenomena and is supported by many researchers in the field of creativity, that one can improve ones capacity for creative thought with puzzles like these. I found this book to be a lot of fun and would strongly reccomend it.
Into The Mind of a Puzzle Wizard.......2005-07-14
The best puzzles are not always the ones with the most logical solution, but oftentimes those that stimulate your brain to make connections in an entirely new manner. Just as there are multiple proofs to mathematical problems, there are many novel ways to solve creative thinking puzzles that require various mixtures of convergent and divergent thinking. In Test Your Creative Thinking, Lloyd King brings together an adequate balance of intelligence, creativity and humor that pushed me to invent new patterns of thought.
One of the features I appreciated most about the book is the way it progresses evenly from low to high degrees of difficulty in a continuous development. Many of the items are deceptively easy, or seem to have no solution at all, but that is because the solution is typically a creative twist that is completely unique to Lloyd King. The advanced test will be a challenge to even the best puzzle solvers, and will without a doubt be a mental exercise worth engaging in.
What I enjoyed most about this book, as well as Lloyd's other books and creations, is the humor and easy going fun tone throughout the book. Many of the puzzles are indeed out of the box and the stories and settings that accompany them are no exception. I have purchased many puzzle books, and spent countless hours solving puzzles that seem canned or derivations of many others I had seen before. In Test Your Creative Thinking, this is definitely not the case, as puzzle wizard Lloyd King provides an opportunity to experience the workings of his equally divergent and convergent mind.

Customer Reviews:
The PERFECT Resource!.......2006-01-26
After LOVING the Hamlet Literature Guide I bought a while ago, I decided to try Macbeth. Again, I was extremely pleased with the quality of the materials, but also with the fact that Secondary Solutions and author Kristen Bowers actually accomplish what they claim--I really CAN teach the content standards through literature! These guides are perfect for the high school english teacher, but would also be good for a parent who is homeschooling and has a fear of, or never really understood Shakespeare. PERFECT!
Highly Recommended.......2006-01-17
I recommend this literature guide to anyone who has any fear of teaching Shakespeare. I was one of those teachers, and like wild dogs, the kids could smell it!! I used this literature guide for the first time a month ago, and my teaching and confidence has turned a 180. This workbook had everything I needed- I didn't have to make up my own worksheets or lessons. Just copy and go--and the kids are learning the content standards and understanding Shakespeare, too. AMAZING!
Impressed again!.......2005-08-02
I purchased the Literature Guide for The Great Gatsby and was thrilled, but now am even more impressed with Macbeth. I would really recommend these lit guides to teachers who don't have a lot of extra time or don't want to take the extra time to write their own materials. Although I understand Shakespeare, teaching his plays are another story. This guide really gives me the confidence to be an expert on Macbeth, since it covers the play so well. Again, I would really recommend these lit guides for any teacher--I am looking forward to more titles!
