Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-03
Daredevil is involved in a personal war with the Kingpin. Said crimelord is getting pretty sick of the horned guy, and sets out to ruthlessly destroy him, one piece of his life at a time. Having discovered his identity as Matt Murdoch, this becomes an even easier task.
The Kingpin only makes one mistake, when the assassins he hires to bump off Matt fail to do the deed comprehensively.
Born Again can be read again and again!.......2007-04-11
Many people may be more familiar with the name Frank Miller nowadays with the film versions of his graphic novels "Sin City"Frank Miller's Complete Sin City Library and "300"300 but there was a time when his name was known predominately to fans of the comic community. His "The Dark Knight Returns"Batman: The Dark Knight Returns is considered one of the greatest Batman stories of all time (rightfully so) and helped to elevate the genre to new heights of storytelling. It was the character of Daredevil, though, that put Mr. Miller on the map.
Daredevil was a bit player in the Marvel Universe when Frank Miller was first hired to draw, then write the vigilante superhero. His stories revolutionized the character and turned the book into a bestseller. Daredevil by Frank Miller & Klaus Janson Omnibus
After years away from the character he returned to write the story line "Born Again". Collecting issues # 227-233 of the original series, Born Again tells one of the darkest story of Daredevil's life.
Daredevil is secretly attorney Matthew Murdock, blinded in an accident but bestowed with heightened senses and trained in various forms of martial arts. "Born Again" opens with The Kingpin of Crime, Daredevil's greatest foe, learning the heroes true identity. Murdock's identity was sold by former girlfriend Karen Paige, who has become a drug addict and sold the secret to obtain a fix. The Kingpin sets about to slowly destroy Murdock by chipping away at his life.
This is not a story about Daredevil but a story about Matt Murdock. One of the most remarkable aspects to the story is the limited use of the Daredevil persona. It is Matthew Murdock's personal life that is assaulted so it is Matthew Murdock who confronts the threat. Frank Miller crafts the slow deterioration of Murdock with brilliance. Every time you think the character has hit bottom, Miller manages to further the descent. Not only is Murdock affected but so are the loved ones in his life. The side story involving friend and reporter Ben Urich adds enormous depth and empathy to the story. The reader becomes invested with the characters and cannot wait to see them rise up from their circumstances.
The art by David Mazzucchelli gives the story grit. His characters have a haunted quality with facial expressions that convey just as much as the script. He is equally skilled at crafting scenes of quiet repose or action. When Murdock finally dons the Daredevil identity, not in defense of himself but to protect the neighborhood he watches over, you almost feel like cheering at the page.
This story will impact long time fans of the character as well as entertain first time readers.
recommended - minor spoilers.......2007-02-10
This is as a good a Daredevil story as I've read and the first time I read it, I was blown away by the story and characters. Frank Miller does a particularly good job of defining Kingpin's ruthlessness and Murdock's tightrope walk with destitution and the brink of madness. It's very suspenseful, hard to put down, and the fight panels are excellent.
It's not without flaw, however. Karen Page's motivation for giving up Murdock's identity is a little too easy and bringing in Captain America and Nuke, towards the end, may be a little cringe inducing for some. The Nuke character is pretty hilariously done, "...our boys, our boys... gimme' a red..." and is entertaining enough, regardless. The art I feel ambivalent about; it has an old school style that at times I really love (panels are all excellently laid out), but at times feels nondescript. Maybe it's the painfully eighties color job that taints the pencils for me. Anyways, these are small concerns as this volume is over two decades old, so this is forgivable.
In closing, I would recommend this without hesitation, especially for Daredevil fans or fans of Frank Miller.
daredevil: born again.......2006-12-07
the book came in TERRIBLE condition...very disappointed....pages bent, ripped and smudged. awful awful
A Man Without Hope..........2006-11-21
This is one of those stories that works on every level, although, with it's tone, it should have been called "The Last Daredevil Story". In their first collaboration together, Frank Miller and David Mazzucchelli chronicle Matt Murdock's destruction at the hands of the Kingpin.
It also had a tag-line that blew me away: "A man without hope is a man without fear." This is a dark story, in every sense of the word: the subject, the worldview, the color palate. However, unlike many modern comics, it is neither bleak nor glum. This is the story of a hero who, by definition, won't give up.
Mazzucchelli demonstrates his mastery over the tools afforded to an artist working with that old beige pulp paper--offset coloring, zip-a-tone and bold inking that puts today's computerized processes to shame. The only complaint about this collection is that the slick, white paper is a little too bright, putting a shine on Hell's Kitchen that shouldn't be there.

Product Description
In "Born Again," objective evidence of reincarnation is presented which demonstrates that from lifetime to lifetime, facial features and personality traits remain consistent. Importantly, it is shown that religion, race and ethnic affiliation can change from one incarnation to another. With this realization, war and conflict based on these differences in these affiliations will be mitigated. Independently researched reincarnation cases include those studied by Ian Stevenson, MD, at the University off Virginia, as well as the of the cases of Police Captain Robert Snow, Fire Chief Jeff Keene, neurosurgeon Norm Shealy and US Diplomat Wayne Peterson. Cases solved through Kevin Ryerson, who is featured in Shirley MacLaine's books, are also presented. Very important cases featured in "Born Again: include: Anne Frank, who was persecuted as a Jew in the Holocaust, and who has reincarnated into a Christian family. This case demonstrates how violence and war based on differences in religious or ethnic affiliation is groundless. Pablo Picaso, who has been reborn as a prodigy, who started producing Picaso like art at age four and who has already been featured on Oprah. Paul Guaguin, who has reincarnated as Peter Teekamp, who unconsciously replicated Gauguin's artistic development as a young man. Laurel & Hardy, who have reincarnated as brothers, are once again a gifted comedy team Political cases include past lives of Indira Gandhii, Nehru, Abdul Kalam, Ralph Nader and George W. Bush. Past lives of Indian movie stars Shah Rukh Khan, Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha are presented. US celebrity cases include Oprah, Halle Berry, Tom Cruise, Nicole Kidman and Steven Spielberg. Past lives of spiritual teachers, such as Neale Donald Walsch, Wayne Dyer and Siva Baba are discussed.
Customer Reviews:
Very well written.......2007-09-22
Hats off to Dr. Semkiw for a very well written book! The arrangement of the chapters was logical and the cases were presented in an unorthodox style understandable to everyone.
There were some areas which however could have been given a better treatment like the following -
(a) The very first photographic comparison of a matured Edwin Booth occurring in the book could have been contrasted with a nearly similar mature photograph of Amitabh occurring elsewhere in the same book for a more look-alike feeling.
(b) The second set of comparison photographs of Edwin Booth as a child compared with a mid-aged Amitabh looked out of place. A childhood photograph should have been used for both of them.
(c) A more legible photograph of Hyder Ali should have been used to bring about the comparison between Hyder Ali and Vikram Sarabhai. Hyder's photograph as presented here is very hard to even be seen properly and is in a side pose as compared to a straight pose of Vikram.
(d) The author keeps repeating at many places (as a matter of fact in almost each of the cases) a phrase about Ahtun Re being capable of providing accurate past life matches. Maybe when the cases were being assembled individually by the author at various points of time in his research it was normal for him to oft-quote that phrase but when the cases are collected together as a single volume, this phrase on Ahtun Re could have been restricted to just one case or to the preface or foreword section instead of it being repeated in each case.
(e) The author indicates about the rebirth of Babasaheb Ambedkar as Maeve Townsend but should have provided at the very least one comparison photograph of these two alongside each other like the other cases.
Finally as a suggestion to the author, he could have researched on the possible rebirths of Mahathma Gandhiji, the father of Indian nation and Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose the two great polestars who shone the firmament of the Indian freedom struggle in their own individually disinct ways. That would have provided a more rounded elegance to the book. Today I am sure that these two great men are much more well-known in India than Indira Gandhi or Jawaharlal Nehru.
Brilliant book!!!!!!!.......2007-03-10
This will be just a short review to say that this truly is a brilliant book. It is written in an academic manner with plenty of supporting evidence and research. Nothing is made up or fictional, it is all supported by well research evidence and the book was written by an obviously very intelligencet and extradionary read author.
Books like these can help change humanity and better it. It's simple if reincarnation is true, we will have to take responsibility in this lifetime in order to make a better world, not for our children or grandchildren, but ironically the most important people to us: ourselves.
Global warming, pollution, crime...reincarnation will have impact on it all and much much more. Would you torture if you knew in the next lifetime you would be tortured? Would you hate, knowing next time you may be the one detested?
It is a simple notion of heaven and hell, but introduced in a completely different and most importantly realistic fashion.
If anything is worth a read in this lifetime, 'tis this book in and many others, same topic related books, whether personal or academic will simply depend on your level of interest.

"Nothing ever really changes here does it?" -Well, it's about to!.......2007-04-01
I am aware this review is way too long. Stick with me-I'm trying to get you interested in one of my favorite novels.
I've always been slightly ashamed of reading fantasy. I'm not really sure why-maybe it's because its just so escapists and my generation is supposed to confront reality full on, or maybe because it's supposed to be for geeks only, or maybe it's just, well because it is so easy to read. Often there is no thought required with fantasy. However, that is not the case with this book, this series. This is one of my favorite books, bare none, cross genera. It's also got one hell of a back story.
"In Legend Born" is set on an Island nation called Sileria, which was once a great civilization and one of the earliest in the world, but was brought down first by an inner conflict between the powers of fire magic, the Guardians, who also contact the spirit world and worship the Volcano Destroyer Goddess Dar, as do the majority of the people, and the powers of water magic, the Waterlords (or the Honored Society if you prefer), who control all water on the island and demand tribute in order for people to drink. If no tribute is paid, the rivers either curl over on themselves or freeze into something like plastic or turn so cold that touching the water will kill you. Anyway, long story short, the Waterlords betrayed the Guardians, the inner power structure crumbled, and the Island was conquered a thousand years before our story begins. And then conquered by another people, and then conquered by a third, the Valdani (who you can easily compare to Rome) who then took over the rest of the known world (which isn't very big by the way.)
So in our story, the setting of which is, one could say, comparable time wise to the middle of the Roman Empire, the majority population of Sileria are mountain peasants who are highly violent, always swearing blood feuds against each other which can't end `till every one of their line, and all friends of said line, are dead. They have been terribly oppressed by the Waterlords, in the from of water deprivation and "taxing" for water, and threats and killings by assassins, the personal small armies of each Waterlord, who are eerily loyal and armed with magical knives made of water. Then there are the rich, who are routinely held for ransom by the Waterlords during the rainy season when no tribute comes in, the sea born, who refuse to come off their boats until all the dragon fish have been killed, the Sisters, a sort of Nun earth cult healing sect who no one is allowed to harm or invade the sanctuary of, this apparently nuts cult who lives on the volcano that the goddess lives in and periodically one of them flings themselves in to see if they are her consort and the man destined to free the nation, and of course, the ever hated Valdani, who make no effort to understand the society at all. Thus there is a law among the mountain peasants-you betray anyone, for any reason, even under torture, even to save a life, you die. Like I said, these a very violent people. Thus their conquers aren't very concerned with holding this Island because the people on it are too busy killing each other to fight to inferior troops the Valdani emperor sent to hold it.
That is until Josarian comes along. He's just a normal peasant, smuggling goods after the death of his wife when he's ambushed and beaten by two Valdani soldiers, and then does the incredibly, fights back and kills two of them. Unthinkable really. And he continues to do so, and spread rebellion, and people listen. So one of the commanders of the out lookers (soldiers) catches this huge break when he arrests a man just of a ship from the mainland carrying two swords a sword master known as a Shatai, one of the deadliest men on earth. His name is Tansen, an in order to be let go, he agrees to go kill Josarian before he becomes any more of a problem.
Unknown to either of these men, both haunted by the past, Josarian with grief for his dead wife, Tansen followed by a sin worse than anything and a another mans vow to kill him for said sin, a young, foul mouthed and vision troubled Guardian, Mirabar, who most on the Island would regard as a demon because of her red hair and glowing yellow eyes has been told to seek a warrior-with a troubled past- to free the country by a strange force from the Otherworld which beckons her.
Then there's a wealthy Silerian women named Elelar who's sleeping around for the cause of freedom and has something to do with the price on Tansen's head, and Kiloran, the most famous, hated, and deadliest Waterlord-who clearly has some serious secrets and plans of his own, but seems to be willing to play freedom fighter as long as it suits his needs (which appear to be world domination, or at least water domination.)
These five people, all powerful and charismatic in their own way, will have their destiny thrust upon. And that destiny is-to work with each other-Dar help them! As Mirabar would say (I am paraphrasing) "destiny may be destiny but it still takes effort!" Alliances will be formed, strange friendships forged, bonds made, vows forgotten, and a true rebellion begun, for freedom. Oh yeah, and along the way they're going to do something big with that Volcano Goddess.
Ok, clearly this is too much information, but like I said, this is one of my favorite books. It's inspiring in that way only books about freedom can be, and this author can do a patriot inspiring speech like no other. It makes you want to jump into the book and kill someone to steal their sword so you slice open your palm, swear a blood pact and join the fight-ok I may be generating, but its got that something. And did I mention it's funny? And charming, and that while it's not romantic, it carries the promise of romance?
In this entire series the one thing that all the characters say about once a chapter is "Nothing ever really changes here does it?" well my lovely, beautiful, wonderful and endearing cast of characters, it is about to.
Five stars. You will read this and dash to the sequel-in fact, just buy the whole trilogy at once to save time. "In Legend Born", "The White Dragon (in Fire Forged)", and "The Destroyer Goddess (in Fire Forged)."
Enthralling.......2005-12-23
I picked this up, not totally sure if it would be good or not, and instead found myself reading page after page, getting very much into the world of this story. She creates her universe seamlessly, and after I finished, my only regret was having to wait so long to read more.
Better than most.......2005-10-12
Some of the people who wrote about this griped about the characterization and the story development saying there was very little if any. Well those pompous would-be-critics need to realize that Laura Resnick, despite being the author of a dozen romantic novels and other short stories, is just making a first attempt at writing epic fantasy. She did a very good job for a first time author and has plenty of time to grow better at her craft.
As for the story, in it Tansen, an exiled native of the island realm of Sileria, returns after having fled nine years before to escape a contract put on his life by a powerful elemental wizard called a waterlord. He returns home a master swordsman and mercenary and causes a near riot when he resists being arrested by the Outlooker soldiers of the occupying Valdani empire. He is taken and coerced by the local garrison commander into assasinating Josarian, a local outlaw and Robin Hood type.
He agrees to this with no intention of carrying out the murder but instead befriends Josarian and joins him in inciting rebellion against the Valdani overlords. Together, along with a young woman fire mage named Mirabar, unite the peasant class of Sileria with the nobility, waterlords and fire mages in making an all out guerilla war against their opressers.
I thought I would give higher marks..........2005-08-21
When I started In Legend Born, I expected to give it at least four stars, maybe even five. I thought at last I'd found a story that, though not as good as Lord of the Rings, was at least on par with David Eddings' Belgariad, a series I treasure.
But alas, three stars it is.
It is obvious that Resnick has put a lot of time and effort into creating her world, the inhabitants of Sileria are diverse and interesting and have wonderfully-developed cultures, customs, and traditions. There is a lot of cultural and political depth here, at least at the beginning. There were also very promising hints of fantastic powers surrounding guardians and waterlords, not to mention the delicious creepiness of a shir.
So why am I so stingy with only three stars?
Unfortunately, even the most detailed development does not make a story and while Resnick's effort is commendable, it's not enough to turn this into a great read. The first third of the book is interesting but then the story slowly grinds to a halt. There's very little character development or action, no humor to lighten the mood, and no fantastic, epic quest to hold our attention. The same main characters spend all their time wandering around the same geographic region trying to solve the same problem. Though they start out as interesting and well-rounded, they slide quickly into the realm of formulaic heros, magicians, courtesans, and traitors. The secondary characters are pure stereotype and completely unmemorable (even while you're reading about them) and many of Resnick's names are difficult to pronounce and impossible to remember.
On the bright side, it's a great bedtime book because I would quite literally fall asleep after 10 or 12 pages. I wish it could have been all those things it seemed to promise, but In Legend Born was easy to put down and will be just as easy to forget.
Great First Book.......2005-07-28
For a romance writer, Laura has taken some advice from her father and has created a society we can relate to if you were perhaps to transpose Sileria for Cyprus in the Mediteranean.
The characters could have been refined a little more. There is a depth missing in some and a total lack of background where such information is desperately required. The improbable death of a lead character just as we are getting used to his being there, leaves me dumfounded.
My four stars are generous because she is now exploring a new genre, however the lack of real character development, if it continues in this series will leave her with some "One Star" reviews because she as a romance writer should know better.

Customer Reviews:
It's called GOODman for a reason.......2006-11-12
I'm a big fan of the Dungeon Classics. These games do grab you with a 1E feel in a good way. Solid encounters, unusual twists and turns to the plot and a story that isn't too deep nor too shallow to accomodate most styles of play.
I've played this particular module with a regular group of 1st level characters, and it works just as well as with the NPC/PC setup it was designed for. There is info in the first few pages that specifically tell you what to change to make it a worthy challenge for such characters. Its somewhat light-hearted tone makes it great for using with a group of players who are new to the game or who don't worry too much about "beating" the game. It's fun, and it will leave you with a story worthy of being talked about for months to come - if not years.
Slapstick fun -- take a break from the serious.......2006-08-22
Ever wondered how far you would get in a dungeon with a first level commoner? How about a first level adept, expert, warrior or aristocrat? Well, DCC #0 gives you that chance. Have fire beetles laugh themselves silly at your group's fighting prowess; see characters behinds' get whooped by ill-tempered skunks, bats and voles. Watch them blunder into every possible bad situation, trap or ambush because they don't have a decent spot/search in the whole lot of 'em. Fun for the whole family!
This module is not for serious character builders, min-maxers, munchkins, or characer actors. It's for the rest of us; folks who like to take a break now and again to enjoy the game for being a game and laugh at a little absurdity. A steady diet of this type of module would get old, but as a throw-away, this little gem shines.
The adventure is a solid little dungeon set in a solid little town, with just enough plot to propel the would-be heroes into a morass way, way over their heads. It could easily be used by regular characters or placed in an on-going campaign (although the monster levels would have to be greatly ramped up), but it plays best with the included NPC-class characters. If you really ham it up it has 10-12 hours of fun in it; if you push hard, you'll be missing the entire point, but you could probably finish it in 4 or 5. This adventure isn't about originality, it's about watching what happens when "normal" people find themselves in a "normal" dungeon.
My group laughed themselves silly with this adventure, and still bring it up with much guffawing now nearly a year later. That makes it a 5-star in my book.
