Book Description

Beth Moore wants readers to know if God could lift her out of the pit, He can get ANYONE out! She admits she wasn't just a visitor; this former pit-dweller had to be delivered from acres of life-accumulated dirt, bone-chilling darkness, spirit-deadening anger, heart-breaking desperation and mind-numbing confusion. The permanent lessons she learned in her desperation-shared in this very personal book-are lessons of hope for all of us. While she deeply empathizes with the hows and whys of life in the "pit," she continually points readers to the deliverance that awaits. Deliverance is for everyone, she proclaims-no matter how you got stuck, no matter how long you've been down, whether you think you deserve it or not. And in her straight-talking but loving style, she reminds readers that deliverance can begin for them this very day.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, terrible accent.......2007-10-10

I loved the content of this book on CD although Beth Moore's Texan twang could be a little distracting at times. Like all things Beth Moore, it was a very uplifting but stern reminder of the toll this life can take on us and how to make sure we don't get used to the pit we have fell in, slipped in or jumped in. This book has brought up a lot of discussion topics and afterthought. Well worth suffering through the accent!

4 out of 5 stars First Beth Moore Book? It was mine..........2007-09-27

Before reading this book, I had never read anything by Beth Moore. Although talented and driven in her call, her style of writing is conversational and, at times, confrontational. As I was reading this book as a member of a club, I did not put it back on the shelf and suffered through becoming comfortable with a one-sided conversation. I am quite happy that I did.
If you have not read Beth Moore before, give her a chance. Let her "Talk at you", and respond with prayer - He is the one you are looking for a conversation with!

2 out of 5 stars A Bit of a Disappointment.......2007-09-12

I was hoping this book would have some solid answers for me to get out of my own personal pit but all it did was describe many different types of pits without alot of specific sure fire help and ways to be free. I think it's great that so many of you found help with Beth's book, but if "I" had to do it over again, I wouldn't buy it.

5 out of 5 stars What a blessing!.......2007-09-09

Whether you are currently in a pit of your own making or have been tossed in a pit via the wrongs of someone else or just difficult life circumstances, this book is such a wonderful tool to help keep your eyes on God through it all and to "get out of that pit". This is the third Beth Moore book I have read (the first was When Godly People do Ungodly Things and I am ongoingly reading Praying God's Word Day by Day)and she is such a blessing--accessible and solid.

5 out of 5 stars Beth is at her best!.......2007-09-05

I read this book when I was in a pit, myself. Beth's bubbly personality came shining through in this book and made me laugh when I didn't especially feel like laughing. She has the ability to make you feel as if she's talking to you like a true girlfriend and you come away with the feeling that, "Yeah, she's been in a pit too and came out victorious." I highly recommend this book to anyone who needs a good pick-me-up and a catalyst to turning to God for guidance in those times in your life when things seem overwhelming.

This is a perfect book for a Christian Library. The concept is based on God Kingdom. This book is perfect to use in Sunday School classes or just for personal study. I enjoy reading it and I'm still using it as a reference.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding Book.......2007-09-24

This book changed the way I've viewed myself and introduced me to a world I never knew existed. It revealed my position as a child apart of a royal family. Thank you, Dr. Munroe. My prayer is that every child of God gets this book and discover who they really are.

5 out of 5 stars Most important subject.......2007-08-14

Myles Munroe has hit on the most important subject in the bible, The Kingdom Of God. The emphasis has been on everything but the kingdom for far to long. Munroe has re-focused our attention on the importance of seeking the Kingdom of God. His unique insight on the subject gives the reader a view of the Gospel that would otherwise not be seen. Being from the Bahamas, he has lived the part of a kingdom dweller and knows first hand what it's like. He then correlates this experience with the life of a believer in Jesus Christ and what comes out is a tremendous work on 'Kingdom living'. If you're serious about your walk, this is a 'must read'.

Thank You Dr. Myles Munroe for allowing God to use you to share so great truths about the Kingdom Of God.

5 out of 5 stars I am finally getting past the door.......2007-06-27

This book is an illumination of truth in a world wasting away in denominational and religious darkness. I thank God for the grace to stay with my faith until this point to read a book that is so dynamic and confirms the good work that God, through His Holy Spirit, has started in me. Prior to this book I thought I was crazy or that everyone else just wasn't getting it. If it's not the off the shelf cracker box Jesus, most people don't accept the idea that our faith is deeper than just Sunday morning church. Thank God for people like Myles Munroe who take the time to spend with the "tutor" and re-discover the truth.

Book Description

While millions of people in the U.S. are actively involved in some sort of religious organization, many people feel disengaged from their faith communities. More than half report that they really don't get the opportunity in their congregation to do what they do best. The problem is this: too many people's talents are going unappreciated. But it doesn't have to be this way. Living Your Strengths shows readers how to use their innate gifts to enrich their faith communities. The book shows people how to identify and affirm their talents, and how to use them for growth and service. Most importantly, Living Your Strengths helps people discover their true callings. The book includes an ID code that gives readers access to StrengthsFinder.com, a personality assessment that reveals the user's top five talents.

4 out of 5 stars It is helpful.......2007-08-09

You may be better reading the original "Strenghts Finder" by Tom Rath. However, this is helpful from a ministry context. It is especially insightful for ministry staff, pastors, lay leaders, etc.

3 out of 5 stars Gallup Goes On and On.......2007-06-26

More ideas from the people that brought you "Discover Your Strengths." In this case they take on a religious bent in explaining how to use your innate talents to discover your place in moving christianity forward. A fairly simplistic look and quick read. Nothing really new in terms of life-altering ideas on how to direct your talents.

4 out of 5 stars Bulk of the book is strength descriptions.......2007-03-24

I was very excited to receive this book, as I had recently been to a workshop at a conference singing the praises of the Gallup-developed strength finder system. I was able to use the code in the book jacket with no problem and it was great to get the results, but I was a little disappointed with the rest of the book from that point. The bulk of the book is just descriptions of the strengths, so of the 30-some-odd most folks will only need to read their five. The rest of the book was pretty much five-point checklists with some ways to be in ministry, which, while nice for the layperson, wasn't the meaty stuff I was hoping for since I am in a church vocation. I am interested in perhaps getting the original (Now, Discover Your Strengths) hoping that it will go into greater detail about how to use the strengths, not just identify them. I'll probably flip through it at a bookstore first, just to be sure. I found the online survey very enlightening and want many folks I know and work closely with to take it! That part was very satisfying.

4 out of 5 stars it is what it is.......2007-03-14

Quite and interesting and helpful title, if it is what you are looking for. It is a basic strengths evaluation, if that's what you want.... buy it, if not... you will probably be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Living your strengths.......2007-01-17

I heard the pastor of a parish that used this book and plan. We are beginning to use it and find it very revealing and grace giving.

Finding people to blend together in the parish community is awesome.

5 out of 5 stars Blessings upon Blessings.......2007-10-10

I love this Bible, I had looked and looked at several book stores. All wanted $50-$80 for a good leather bound bible. I found this bible on Amazon for less then half the price including shipping. Along with God's teaching, this bible has Joyce Meyer's beautiful and no nonsense way of teaching. It's the most wonderful blessing. Easy to read and makes me want to pick up my bible to see what's next. I will be buying this same Bible for Christmas presents.

1 out of 5 stars Re-writing her own "Literal" Feminist Bible .......2007-10-05

It's so strange that so many of these people who take a literal view of the Bible have been re-writing it! If you don't believe Joyce Meyer is a blasphemous hypocrite (who can't hide her foul temper in her positive rhetoric) with the nerve to scribble HER OWN notes in a Bible which she claims you should read literally, and then SELLS THAT to you sheep and goats . . . then read this line from her blessed Bible that she and a lot of other "literalist" females have been dismissing or trying to ignore.

Corinthians 14: 34-37
Women should be silent during the church meetings. It is not proper for them to speak. They should be submissive, just as the law says. If they have questions to ask, let them ask their husbands at home, for it is improper for women to speak in church meetings.

The Bible is full of these gems, ladies.

Here's something else you might like. Archaeolgists have discovered tons of IDOLS of Yahweh from the same time the Golden Calf was worshipped. But here's the kicker, he HAD A FEMALE COUNTERPART, A CONSORT or WIFE if you will. THE ORIGINAL YAHWEH had a bare breasted consort with a snake around her neck--her name was ASTARTE, also tranlated ISHTAR, or ASHARA.

How do you like that? Your Bible has already been changed and re-written a bunch of times. It's filled with man's pre-scientific guesswork about how the world began, and a crazy, hallucinating prisoner's babblings about how it will end. Most of the halluciantory end times stuff is about the empires of the times, by the way, and you can quit being so fearful because they've already fallen.

The Bible is filled with the misogyny and fallacies of the particular time periods in which each passage was written. If you'll study beyond the works of a barely educated and often shriekingly angry self-appointed priestess like Joyce Meyer, you won't believe the amazing and interesting facts that are well studied out there. You'll be surprised at how wonderful and fascinating the real world, plus evidence from texts understood in context can be.

You deserve a history and fact based study and not some ignorant lady cherry-picking and re-writing a "literal" text that's been re-written, re-interpreted, excised, translated and re-translated WITH ENORMOUS changes many, many times before her as well. Joyce Meyer should serve us all an example of how that happens. I feel bad for her personal past, but in spite of how she presents material the world and Bible are actually not all about her. You deserve both facts and truth itself in your own life. And you deserve to have your mind back.

5 out of 5 stars The Everday Life Bible: The Power of God's Word for Everyday Living (Bible).......2007-09-19

It has notes from the Author which explains in a simple way the scripture which anyone can apply these teachings to everyday life. Most of the notes hightlights most important passages in the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars Very nice prayer suggestions.......2007-08-15

I was attracted to this book at Barnes and Nobles, because the author suggests things to pray for (at the bottom of many of the pages). I have trouble asking for what I need from God sometimes, and reading this bible really helps me to focus on what I need to ask for. This is great for women and college students because the author's notes explain the bible verses in a clear and easy-to-understand manner.

5 out of 5 stars Easy to understand Bible.......2007-08-04

This Bible called The Everyday Life Bible is so great I just want to keep reading it. I have other Bibles however this is the best it is the one I read everyday now it is so easy to understand and the life points are great. I would recomend this Bible to everyone I am so glad that I got it.

In The Sacred Romance, authors Brent Curtis and John Eldredge inspire readers to enter into the greatest romance of all time--one with God. Many Christians have tried to satiate the hunger of their hearts by substituting the love of God with things from this world. Since "our heart is the key to the Christian life," this often leads to spiritual stagnation and unhappiness, while God, the "Great Lover," attempts to lavishly adorn us with His perfect love. Doubting God's goodness coupled with fear of trusting Him blind the believer and prevent him from being wooed by God into a rich relationship. Life can soon become empty, cold, and worthless. Through personal narrative, Curtis and Eldredge take turns convincing the reader not only that God is good, but that recklessly abandoning oneself to Him results in a fulfilling life of abundance and awe. In this portrayal of God's character, the obvious error lies in believing that He could need anything from His creatures, or that He could be "hurt" by their unrequited love. On the whole, however, this is a call to a more passionate relationship with the lover of our souls. A follow-up book, The Journey of Desire, was written by John Eldredge after Brent Curtis's tragic death. --Jill Heatherly

Book Description

The God who saves is also a God who woos His own to a relationship primarily of the heart. As we draw closer to Him, we must choose to let go of other "less-wild lovers," such as perfectionistic driveness and self-indulgence. Eldredge and Curtis identify the lies offered by "false loves" and instruct us on the journey back to the Lover of our souls. In carefully crafted words and images, the authors entice the reader to his or her own journey of the heart, promising, "It is possible to recover the lost life of our heart and with it the intimacy, beauty, and adventure of life with God."

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended reading for any Christian.......2007-06-18

See my review for the study guide because this is a great study to do with a group of people. Eye opening to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Fulfilling.......2007-03-30

This book really spoke to me and opened my heart to a whole new world: that perhaps God really wants to know us deeply and to love us as a lover does. The idea that we are His children, created by Him, and that we are glorious creatures marred by sin, that our hearts are new and good things once we accept Christ, are crazy ideas in the modern church, but these ideas hold up in scripture. This book has really helped me become closer to God, and closer to His true desire for my life: to live a great adventure with Him. I HIGHLY recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars The Sacred Romance.......2007-01-05

I first read the book, which has profoundly and positively affected my spiritual life. In all of my readings on this subject over the years, nothing ever has put the love of God in such a relevant context. I am now re-reading the book and doing the accompaning workbook which I recommend as well. I highly recommend the book especially for those who are interested in developing a or strenghening their personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

5 out of 5 stars Wildly Profound and Inspirational.......2006-11-20

All of us spend our lives with a desire for something more, either buried deep within our hearts or just below the surface. This book reveals what that something more is and how we both draw close to it and away from it. The authors' insights into the causes of both our joys and our miseries are nothing short of revelation. This is not a "feel good" kind of book. It does not tell us that everything will be all right if we just have faith. It explores the harsh realities of life and the glorious possibilities of our God given destiny of a life in communion with Him.

I found myself moved to the core of my being, both laughing and crying at the same time as the words of this book cut straight to the center of what my life has been missing all along. This book is not a straight-forward outline of premises though. It is a journey with God. If your heart is not open to mystery of that journey, if it is not hungry for that something more, if it does not feel something missing, then it will not be open to the message of this book. I recommend picking it up when you are at a point in your life when you find yourself hurting, lonely, lost or numb and wondering where God is and why He doesn't just make the pain go away.

1 out of 5 stars New revelation, new spirituality.......2006-10-30

First of all, this book mentions "the heart" and strays from the truth of scripture terribly. God's word says the "heart is deceitful above all things and who can know it?" There is nothing good in our hearts, apart from Christ, and whatever "good" there might be in there comes from Him. Scripture tells us that in the last days the church will go into apostasy. This time has come like no other time before. There is a move to to throw out scripture and move past it, ignoring what God has already told us. What we need to know is in scripture--especially those things we need to know about Him and what He requires of us. This move in the church today to "feel" God and go "to a deeper level" is a reawakening of mysticism which does not belong in the body of Christ. The truth and objectives of scripture are not mystical, for a reason. Jesus Christ was and is not a mystic. This movement is called "contemplative spirituality" and it is subtle and dangerous. Sadly, even Eldredge has taken this route. How many more good authors and great men of God are going to forsake the completeness of God's word to turn inward to "self" and think they will find something new? Solomon said, "there is nothing new under the sun." The devil wants us to think we can reinvent and invent "new" outside of God's marvelous confines. We need to stick to scripture and stop reading books like these written by men who want to offer us something more than the Lord commanded us. We are treading on shaky ground, but all we need is His glorious word and to do what He said: "Keep my commandments."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Counter-Cultural Call to Biblical Leadership.......2007-07-27

Drawing from examples of leaders in the Bible, leadership theories, testimonies of ministry and secular leaders, and their own experiences, Henry and Richard Blackaby present a refreshingly helpful and insightful resource on leadership in their book, Spiritual Leadership. Recognizing that Christian leadership today sounds more and more secular than Christian, the Blackabys call on Christians in leadership roles, both inside and outside of the church, to "seek to lead God's way" (17). They define this type of spiritual leadership as "moving people on to God's agenda" (20).

Three main aspects of Spiritual Leadership set it apart from other leadership books and make it highly commendable...

First, it is intended for a broad audience. It is written in a way to be just as helpful for Christian CEOs and other business people as it is for pastors and ministry leaders. In fact, the authors state that they intend this work to be for all Christians who want to make a difference (14).

Second, and most significant, Spiritual Leadership is theocentric in its approach, not anthropocentric. This book is not a do-it-yourself guide to leadership nor is it a self-help book. Instead, it is a refreshing focus on God in the vast sea of "Christian" leadership books today. From the outset, issues such as goals and influence are all presented in terms of God's will. For example, influence is defined as moving people from where they are to where God wants them to be (20). Even popular leadership concepts are reframed in order to present the issue from God's perspective, such as noting how time management really is personal management in order to stay on God's agenda (200). All throughout the pages of this book the Blackabys paint the picture of leadership in terms of God's plans. It is not about advancing one's personal goals. Rather, it is about obeying God and moving people to be in line with His will. The authors conclude that since "God is on mission," the task of leaders is to join Him in that mission and bring people along to join that mission (70). In light of this reality, leaders are urged to make decisions with the reminder that they will give an account before God. The authors remind the readers that the goal is bringing God glory while the reward is finding joy in knowing that they pleased God. In being God focused, this book also recognizes that leaders can accomplish nothing without God. Instead of providing a checklist to be used to achieve goals, the Blackabys encourage leaders to depend on the Lord. In fact, from the outset they state that God calls leaders to do things that only He can do; thus, spiritual leaders must depend on the Holy Spirit (21). Such dependence on the Lord requires a leader to have a vibrant prayer life as well as seek guidance in the Word, from other believers, and even from looking at how God is moving in the circumstances of life. While the repeated stress on dependence and prayer may cause the reader to think "I've heard all of these things ten times already!," such an emphasis prevents the reader from missing the most important theme of the book as well as challenges him or her to remember Jesus' words that are so counter-cultural in the leadership world today: "Apart from me you can do nothing" (John 15:5).

Third, Spiritual Leadership focuses more on being than on doing. Instead of offering a program to implement, a check-list to do, or an attitude to embrace, this book challenges leaders to be faithful to God. As in the other themes, the Blackabys are straightforward in this assertion, as seen when they say within the first several chapters that "leadership is more about `being' than about `doing'" (31). The Blackabys believe that being holy and faithful and modeling obedience to God's will are necessary since leaders cannot take their followers deeper than where they themselves are. As such, spiritual leaders must spend much time in the "conscious presence of God" (170). By abiding in Him, spiritual leaders can then encourage their followers to grow in their relationship with God. In addition, such abiding is shown to be necessary since spiritual leadership comes through revelation, not from vision. As leaders and followers seek God, they will be able to join together in accomplishing the work to which He calls them.

All of these themes are repeated throughout the book. By stating them directly in the introductory chapters and repeating them throughout, it is hard to imagine how any reader could miss this counter-cultural, yet solidly biblical, approach toward leadership. By the time readers turn the last page, they can easily articulate the thesis that spiritual leadership is moving people on to God's agenda. They can articulate the reality that leadership is about pleasing God. They understand that such leadership requires abiding with God more than doing certain tasks. Most of all, they recognize that such spiritual leadership, while hard work, is a high calling and a "God-given privilege" (236). Whether you find yourself in a leadership role in the church, in business, in education, or even in your home, the timeless, Biblical principles articulated by Richard and Henry Blackaby will motive you to discern God's will, be faithful to follow the path He has set before you, and do everything you can to bring others along on the exciting adventure of knowing and following God.

5 out of 5 stars Spiritual Leadership by Henry T. Blackaby.......2007-01-12

Excelent book. Every leader should read this book. Many good examples of leadership, including President Truman.

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual Leadership: Moving People to God's Agenda.......2007-01-11

We, Christian School teachers, read this and found it very informational. Additionally, it was quite helpful as we learned things that were very helpful in growing and nurturing young leaders of the future.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good, but not the best.......2007-01-10

The book differentiates between worldly leadership and spiritual leadership, the leader's relationship with God being the key to his/her ability to lead effectively and appropriately. The author's move through eleven chapters each focusing on one key aspect of the leader's life, from The Leaders Challenge (chapter 1), to The Leaders Character (chapter 5), to The Leaders Pitfalls (chapter 11).

List strengths of book.
I found the emphasis on the spiritual aspect of leadership to be very refreshing, not to mention accurate! The book is rooted in biblical principles and is focused on helping the leader to make godly decisions in all that he does. The definition of leadership was also very refreshing: "Spiritual Leadership is moving people on to God's agenda" (p. 20). I liked the parallel with Robert Clinton's book on "The Making of a Leader" concerning how God develops leaders. I also found the "Concepts and Scriptures for Consideration" at the end of each chapter to be very helpful.

List weaknesses of book.
I found very little to consider as a weakness of this book. The only issue might be that at times it was not always practical. There are times when the authors will share how something needs to be in the life of the leader without following up with clear practical ways/steps to accomplish the desired issue. However, I did not find this to be the case very often in the book.

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK-MUST HAVE FOR PASTORS.......2006-11-10

Purchased for my husband. This book is a must have for pastors who want to make Godly decisions. Blackably does an excellent job explaining what true leadership is and how to know if you are successful (by God's Standards).

Book Description

A simple walk through Washington, D.C. began a profound journey of personal discovery and renewal for Newt Gingrich, one of America's most influential politicians and commentators. At the National Archives, the immortal words from the Declaration of Independence that we "are endowed by our Creator with certain unalienable rights," jumped off the page and into his heart with the simple truth that from day one in our country's history, the Author of freedom was not the state nor even the Founding Fathers. Our basic human rights and freedoms were-and are-"Creator-endowed." Gingrich sounds a clarion call for us to recognize that the life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness that we hold so dear are inseparable from a sincere and humble acknowledgement that these gifts are only the Creator's to give. As a bonus, the book includes a "walking tour" of Washington, D.C.

5 out of 5 stars America, the Christian Nation Under God .......2007-09-26

This book was another top notch, highly informative conservative-traditionalist volume that speaks the truth that America is indeed a Christian Judeo nation at heart.

It is so vitally important for American culture to return to our moral religious values, and seek the historical truth that indeed the Founders were very spiritual people who upheld very Christian ideals in springing to life the American nation.

While Thomas Jefferson was a Deist (not an Atheist but one who believed that God had sprung the universe into life with little involvement in the affairs of man), many of the founders themselves were personally brought up in the Christian tradition. I can recall the miracle on Christmas when George Washington crossed the Delaware River to storm the Hessian base camp, or his Thanksgiving Day prayer.

One can come to the logical conclusion that the inspiration of the American idea was spawned from the both the secular notions of the Enlightenment era, and the philosophies of Christianity.

Regardless of those extremists out there who try to twist history into something that it wasn't for PC reasons or their own personal contempt for American Christian ideals, there is no United States of America with out the traditions and philosophies of Jesus Christ.

God, the Ten Commandments, & the teachings of the lord Jesus Christ will always be apart of America.

This is one fantastic book worth your time and money.

5 out of 5 stars Rediscovering God in America.......2007-09-10

The book is an excellent reminder of the source of strength and wisdom that all our founders looked to as they made decisions concerning the founding of America. There is a clear discussion of the separations issue and the foolish conclusion that our leaders did not want God a part of public life. It reminds us of the importance that all leaders in the first 100 years of the country place on Christian faith.

Millionaire in 365 Days: The Daily Plan to Get There

America is the MOST faith based country in the world....But ???

Newt is such an interesting guy...it is worth reading to get a sense of the history of how our country's founders and there on saw faith as part of America.....buy it, if you have faith in America as well...

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding.......2007-07-21

I read with interest how our founding fathers consistently built buildings with the reminders that there is a Supreme being, God, who has blessed us with this country, our constitution, and our democracy. There are so many nihilists around us that would destroy all of this. Evil does lurk in this world. A well writtent book, succinct but accurate with historical facts.

4 out of 5 stars Great CD!.......2007-07-16

This CD is very helpful for anyone visiting our nation's capitol. I wish we'd had it before our visit.

Rise Above is Gwen Shamblin's follow-up to her million-selling, spiritually based weight loss book, The Weigh Down Diet. Expanding the principles of that book, Rise Above promises to deliver readers from what Shamblin calls the "bondage" of food. Rather than offering a simple diet plan, Shamblin addresses the spiritual root causes of overeating and admonishes her readers to serious introspection. "We are not lacking for information now," Shamblin explains, "we are hurting for motivation and heart-changing cultivation." Shamblin helps readers find motivation to master their cravings for food by reminding them of God's desire to control every aspect of life. "You may eat anything," she writes, "but you are not to be mastered by anything, for 'you are not your own; you were bought at a price. Therefore honor God with your body' (1 Cor. 6:19b-20)." Shamblin, a registered dietician, conveys her nutritional expertise and her spiritual conviction in every chapter of this straightforward, commonsensical, Bible-based book.

1 out of 5 stars It's Not About Weight Loss.......2007-06-12

I have this book and read the first three chapters before I put it down. Mrs. Shamblin's doctrinal beliefs do not mirror mainstream Christian thinking. She has an agenda she is pushing, but it's not about weight loss. I encourage readers to check out Christian reviews about her weight loss program and her church. It is really scary stuff. If your goal is to lose weight and to experience a closer walk with God, The Dieter's Prayer Book by Heather Harpham Kopp can be used with any healthy-eating weight loss program.

3 out of 5 stars Mixed Bag of Truth and Error.......2007-05-28

First I will say that Gwen Shamblin is giving us the truth about how to lose weight and win our battle with food. She has correctly diagnosed that food has become a God-substitute in our culture. She tells us truly that we are a greedy and self-indulgent people. If you follow her guidance about tuning in to your God-given hunger and fullness mechanism, and obeying God's signals for eating, you will lose weight. You will overcome temptation as you trust God more and consciously think about what you are doing in the realm of God's will concerning over indulgence.

However, if you are an 'orthodox' Christian, you will be challenged by some of Gwen's teachings, and will find them disturbing. If you believe that God is triune, and that Jesus is the Son of God and God the Son, prepare to be challenged. Gwen takes Scripture out of context, or uses only her very narrow interpretation of certain 'proof texts' for her agenda. Her understanding of Church history is limited at best, and is sometimes very wrong. She can come across as judgmental and mean.

If you are a very strong in your faith, you may be annoyed at some teachings, but you can still benefit from this program. Keep your focus on the Exodus metaphor, and Gwen's teachings about God's design for your hunger mechanism and how to cooperate with it. Stay attuned to learning more about how God works in your life, especially in the things you never thought about before (like your relationship to food). You will lose weight, and can gain a closer relationship with God. You may have to ignore a lot of bad theology, but Gwen's teaching on overindulgence as idolatry is very good.

5 out of 5 stars Life Changing Source.......2006-06-27

I am appalled at some of the negative comments this book has received since it is indeed a life changing source of information. Her book was written with poise and a deep love for our Lord and Savior. Not only will you learn how to break free from strongholds, but you will learn how to have an awesome love affair with the 1 true GOD. So please rescue yourself from the clutches of the enemy and begin to live anew. Thankyou Mrs. Shamblin for your wonderful insight.

1 out of 5 stars this woman is NOT A PROPHETESS as she claims.......2006-01-04

do not waste your money...gwen shamblin is a leader of a CULT!!! i know people who belong to her remnant fellowship-they have completely abandoned their family members who are not part of the "chosen few" who know the real "truth"...do not support this woman or her leaders. eat less and excersize more, the weight will come off. ask GOD to help you and strengthen your resolve...but don't look to Gwen...she is the devil's friend.

1 out of 5 stars Graceless Message in all of Gwen's books.......2005-12-21

Started to attend the new Change series one month ago and felt something was definately missing in her message about how God viewed me about my sin of over eating.I had bought her books the Weighdown diet and Rise Above. Many scriptures to back all her claims but where is the scriptures on Grace? Aren't we saved by Grace through faith,it's a gift from God,not of works so no one can boast? Well that's all she does boast how only her Remnant Fellowship and like minded people will be saved from God's wrath. My bible tells me God has not appoint us to wrath! That's why Christ came in the first place. Why does she looks at the speck in her brothers eye when all along she has a log in her eye?I know if I were to die today even overweight I would go to heaven because I am In Christ. And don't tell me it's cheap Grace.Grace isn't cheap Christ paid the price so we can be saved. These books are full to the brim of Pharisee legalism just Beware.Believe me I sent alot of money on the series and the Holy Spirit is the one who showed me the error in these teachings along with other ex-Remnamt members and Weighdown members (you can find out that this teaching is a cult on the internet),who were either kicked out and never spoken to again or made to be ridiculed in front of the whole Remnant church.I threw away ALL of my books related to Gwen Shamblin. Some claim that there's fruit in people lives and it's changed them.Well there's fruit in other cults too and some day they will be tested by fire (holy spirit) and I believe all her works will be burned up as chaff!

5 out of 5 stars This book is a MUST for anyone pursuing peace in their life........2007-03-06

I have to say that besides the Bible, this book changed my life. This book defines in a way that is easy to understand and grasp how much Jesus loves us and the truth about who we are to Him.

This book helps you to understand the lie that satan wants us to believe. That our self esteem equals our performance and other people's opinion. Understanding this lie really changed my life.

In addition, the book gives you prayers to memorize in times of the enemy challenging your thinking and behavior. How to not fear rejection, how to overcome the fear of not meeting people's approval. I recommend this book to anyone who is ready to get this burden off their back. The burden of having everyone else's expectations rule your life. Get your freedom back by really understanding, in depth, how much God loves you and get back the peace in your life that you've been missing. I love this book!!!!! A++++++++++++

5 out of 5 stars This book changed my life.......2007-01-23

This is a very inspiring book. Some of us are in bad relationships and we need to know that we do have value and can improve our life simply by understanding that we have value already. This book shows you how to understand that and apply it to your life.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book for spiritual growth.......2007-01-10

My husband and I are reading it together. I is helping us see the roots of our disagreements. It is helping us be more kind and understanding with one another.

4 out of 5 stars Really Good!.......2007-01-03

This book really makes you take a second look at yourself. Parts of it are almost too in-depth for me, but I still would recommend the book. It would be a great book to study. Lots of knowledge to be gained!

5 out of 5 stars An excellent resource.......2006-08-30

I read this book some years ago. I had been a Christian 6 years at that time, but its contents were earth-shattering. It woke me up to some of the basic truths of the application of Jesus Christ and His word in my life. It opened my eyes to lies I had believed that had literally tormented me for some years. It helped lay a very strong foundation of self-worth and of freedom, and as I now serve God in full time ministry I still draw on the truths that were so powerfully imprinted on my soul through reading the book. Like Billy Graham, I believe every Christian should read this book.

Your greatest regret at the end of your life will be the lions you didn't chase. You will look back longingly on risks not taken, opportunities not seized, and dreams not pursued. Stop running away from what scares you most and start chasing the God-ordained opportunities that cross your path. In a Pit with a Lion on a Snowy Day is inspired by one of the most obscure yet courageous acts recorded in Scripture, a blessed and audacious act that left no regrets: “Benaiah chased a lion down into a pit. Then, despite the snow and slippery ground, he caught the lion and killed it” (2 Samuel 23:20 -21). Unleash the lion chaser within!

Story Behind the Book

“Our best days often start out as our worst days. And our greatest opportunities are often disguised as our biggest problems. You can land in a pit with a lion on a snowy day, and it will seem like the end of the road. But God is in the recycling business. He recycles past experiences and uses them to prepare us for future opportunities. That is the story of my life. And that is the story of your life. Look in the rearview mirror long enough and you’ll see that God has purposely positioned you everywhere you’ve been—even when it seemed you’d taken a wrong turn.” —Mark Batterson

This book changed my perspective on some rough things I have been going through. In a instant it changed everything in my world.
I recommend it to anyone who is wondering what they are doing with their lives and how they ended up where they are. It answers a lot of questions and emboldens and strengthens. It is exciting.

5 out of 5 stars Great Motivator to Pursue the Audacious.......2007-09-17

This unusual title comes from a Bible verse in 2 Samuel 23:20-21 which says, "There was also Beniah son of Jehoiada, a valiant warrior from Kabzeel. He did many heoic deeds, which included killing two of Moab's mightiest warriors. Another time he chased a lion down into a pit. Then, despite the snow and slippery ground, he caught the lion and killed it. Another time, armed only with a club, he killed a great Egyptian warrior who was armed with a spear. Benaiah wrenched the spear from the Egyptian's hand and killed him with it."

So basically, Beniah was the freaking man. He was the type of guy you'd want on your side going into battle. He became the head of the bodygaurd for King David and eventually became the comander of the army of Israel under King Solomon.

The book is based around this passage and goes on to expand and describe how seemingly difficult circumstances which one might initially shy away from or avoid can turn out for great good if faced head on.

Batterson describes a number of modern day lion chasers whom he has known such as a Georgetown lawyer who stopped practicing law to make a film about human trafficking in Uganda, a tenured professor who quit his post and started a dot com company, a college graduate who moved to the Marshall Islands to teach English, and an executive at Microsoft who gave up millions of dollars in stock options to start a church. Batterson himself is a lion chaser in that he moved to Washington D.C. to plant a church in the heart of D.C. on Capitol Hill which meets at a movie theatre in Union Station.

There are all kinds of logical reason not to do certain things but sometimes we need to have some guts and just go for it. God doesn't call us to a life of mediocrity but wants great things to happen through His work in us. Many times these things don't seem to make sense in our finite understanding but God is working so that He will be glorified if we're willing to step out in faith.

A great scene from the movie "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" illustrates this concept as well. Jones is faced with a great chasm which is impossible to jump across but realizes it is a step of faith. When he takes a step out into thin air despite what his eyes see in the great depth below, he then finds firm ground and is able to walk across the chasm.

Of course there are times to be practical and follow common sense as well. One should not simply jump into something just because it sounds fun or exciting. It should be thought out and prayed about. God has a tendency to confirm direction towards lion chasing opportunities.

A quality quote from Mark Twain also illustrates this mentality. "Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn't do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover."

Throughout the book Batterson helps motivate the reader and give them the chutzpah to go tackle tough tasks and chase lions. I recommend it for anyone who might be hestitating about something in life or who needs a little extra encouragement in seeking out and going after goals in life.
