4 out of 5 stars Good Reading.......2007-09-16

This book is very entertaining. It wasn't what I was hoping for, in regards to making fairys. Beautiful illustrated.

5 out of 5 stars Here's everything that's in it.......2007-08-25

I loved this book! A beautiful hardback, it describes everything a girl (or woman) would want to know about the world of Disney Fairies -- where they come from, how they live, what their special talents are, what they do for fun. Scattered throughout the book are two-page spreads spotlighting particular fairies, including a list of her likes, dislikes and favorite foods, flowers and games. It's all very cute.

What makes it a must-buy, however, is its breathtaking artwork. Virtually every page has an intricate, colorful illustration. Most combine a watercolor background with a delicate foreground of fairies and animals. The art often rivals that of Disney's classic animated features, like "Pinocchio" and "Bambi."

The only drawback: there's no table of contents! Here is what is inside:
* Pixie Hollow: Where Never fairies live
* How to spot a Never fairy
* The ring of belief: How children believing in fairies keeps the little creatures alive
* How fairies come to be: From a baby's first laugh
* Arrival: What happens when a fairy arrives in Never Land
* Fairy manners
* The Home Tree
* Queen Clarion: Profile of the Never fairies' leader

5 out of 5 stars Love it!.......2007-08-22

I buy this book for every little girl birthday party we are invited to. It's beautifully detailed letting the reader just fall into it's wonderfully imaginative fairy world. I have two boys and have been sad not having my own copy but I finally gave in and got our own so now my boys will be reading this with me.

5 out of 5 stars I believe!.......2007-08-19

I'm 28 and I just could not resist this book, what a great book and stunning pictures too. It's a dream book for every young girl...ok, ok also for those girls who are a little older but still believe. Fantastic gift item for kids or friends who believe.

5 out of 5 stars spectacular - stunning.......2007-05-26

This book is beautiful. The book is more of a reference guide for all things in Pixie Hollow. So it was a great way to be introduced to all the Disney fairies and how they live. But, the amazing thing about this book is the graphics. Each page is filled with beautiful images. The fairy world the Disney artists have created is stunning. This was well worth the price paid - a true keepsake.

Book Description

A collection of four best-selling R.A. Salvatore novels available in paperback for the first time.
This collection of four New York Times best-selling novels from premiere fantasy author R.A. Salvatore includes The Silent Blade, The Spine of the World, Servant of the Shard, and Sea of Swords. These titles continue the tale of Salvatore’s signature character Drizzt Do’Urden™, one of the most well known figures in the Forgotten Realms setting.

4 out of 5 stars The conclusion to the 'Legend of Drizzt' (finally).......2007-07-17

The Paths of Darkness compendium includes R.A. Salvatore's Forgotten Realms novels published from 1998 to 2001. The principle storyline for this series is the return of Wulfgar from imprisonment by the demon Erttu, and his stuggle to come to grips with his new life. Three of the books included in this one make up the final part of the 'Legend of Drizzt'. One book, Servant of the Shard, seems to have been included in this volume only because of publication order. It is actually the first book of the separate 'Sellswords' trilogy and doesn't really have anything to do with Drizzt and Co.

In The Silent Blade (Forgotten Realms: Paths of Darkness, Book 1), a fresh new adventure for the Companions of the Hall is began. As Drizzt and Co. head out to Spirit Soaring to have Cadderly destroy the (same old) Crystal Shard, monsters hound them at every turn. Wulfgar struggles with inner demons until he finds a place as a bouncer for a rough tavern in Luskan, where he has a great time bashing heads and drinking booze. Artemis Entreri travels back to his roots in Calimport to begin reestablishing his name and fortune. Jarlaxle has ventured out of Menzoberanzan in the search for power and wealth and coaxes Entreri to join his plans. Character development is the primary thing that stands out in this book. Wulfgar, Entreri, and Jarlaxle especially grow as characters. [4-star rating].

The Spine of the World (Forgotten Realms: Paths of Darkness, Book 2) is completely devoted to the continuing struggle of Wulfgar, who cannot seem to overcome his inner demons and allows himself to fall into a rather shameful existence. The story consists of two separate plot-lines that briefly come together near the end of the book. Wulfgar and Morik (who develops nicely here) fight, are framed, get beat, leave Luskan, fight, are framed, get beat, and so on. The other story was actually the more intriguing to me. It involves characters that we've never met before and their emotional wrangling. A hi-bred lord courts a lowly peasant (Meralda), who goes along with it for her family's sake but makes a big mistake in getting knocked up by another man. The two stories come together in an unpredictable way that results in a hugely surprising and satisfying ending. [3-star rating]

The third book in the Paths of Darkness, Servant of the Shard (Forgotten Realms: Paths of Darkness, Book 3), probably shouldn't have been included in this collection. It is really somewhat of a duplicate book, released two different times with different looking covers, the second time as book one of The Sellswords. It is also one of the most enjoyable Salvatore books to date. The Sellswords series follows the adventures of Artemis Enreri and Jarlaxle. This perfect couple is extremely well-developed and are fun to read about. In book 1, the Crystal Shard occupies center stage as the story began in The Silent Blade is continued. The annoyingly pious Cadderly plays a part in the latter parts of the book, but doesn't do too much harm to the story. Excellent fighting scenes and plenty of action make for a fun and exciting read. [5-star rating].

In Sea of Swords (Forgotten Realms: Paths of Darkness), the story of Wulfgar is rejoined for the final book of the Legend of Drizzt. As the Companions of the Hall set out to retrieve Aegis-Fang from the pirate Sheila Kree, it seems nothing could stand in their way. Wulfgar finally comes to terms with his new place in life, and is reunited with his old friends before the final battle. A mysterious elf from Drizzt's past has plotted to slay Drizzt for years and the two meet in an epic clash. Overall, this was a bit disappointing for a Drizzt novel, particularly because of its being the last in the series. [3-star rating].

Overall, these books really start to lose interest as the reader becomes inundated with Drizzt and his friends. The heroes (except Wulfgar ironically) become practically invincible and the stories become predictable. I'm just glad that I'm finally through the Legend of Drizzt (although I probably will read The Hunter's Blades trilogy).

5 out of 5 stars Salvatore rolls a critical hit again!.......2007-06-09

First and foremost, there are four books in the series and unless you have an idea what these books are, like this particular genre, like what they deal with or play D&D then you probably should start at the beginning. It made several references to the old books and although it didn't annoy me since I read them, another reader might not like it. For the most part, this storyline speaks mostly about Wulfgar, his life and redemption after he returned from Errtu's grasp.

In any case, the four books are listed and summarized below:

The Silent Blade
The Spine of the World
Sea of Swords
Servant of the Shard

The first one dealt with Drizzt and an old grudge a thief named Artemis had with him. The thief was apparently an assassin for Pasha Pook who was the Guildmaster Regis stole his magical gem from. The book was great and although there was some mature content, it wasn't anything near what a teenager sees online at a porn site or on the movie 300 in terms of explicitness of gore. Besides, I believe if you can read then you're entitled to some juicy bits of writing. If you're a DM much like me and play D&D then this might give you an idea or two or a theme. It could even give you several comical or devious characters and scenarios to copy into your own campaign.
The Spine of the World was great. At first it threw me off by introducing the story of some prissy Lord of a no-name town in the backwaters of Faerun but as the book progressed, the author meshed the two distinct storylines together into an intricate web which of course featured Wulfgar. This book is primarily about Wulfgar and his redemption. A daring rescue and a few lies later and Wulfgar found his life changed. I don't want to ruin the book or the ending but it's a strong read in my opinion! There was more drama and storyline than action in this book. There weren't many battles and the few that were in the book were obviously one-sided. There were some good plots there if you are a DM and I strongly encourage you read about how shoddy the fiefdom of Auckney really is. At times DM's make small hamlets too powerful and often their best fighter can take out the heroes in one or two hits. A perfect example is the gnome fighter who claims to be the best fighter in all of Auckney.
The next book is off to a promising read with a couple of guys tracking down Drizzt and they are enlisting magical aid. Apparently from what I gathered in the first few pages I've read Bruenor is going to look for Wulfgar's hammer and the King of Mithral Hall is dying of old age. There is much to read as I am only a few pages shy of the fourth chapter. All his books thus far from the previous series have done his name and his claim justice. Read them all if you wish, but be forewarned, make sure you've got nothing to do as time will fly by!

5 out of 5 stars Doesn't get much better........2007-05-07

If you're a fan of Salvatore- this is a must.
If you're a fan of fantasy- this is a must.
If you are a fan of reading- this is... a nice read.

I love the character development in Salvatore's books- and this series easily has the most of that compared to any of his others.

A good place to pick up if you've never read any of Salvatore's Forgotten Realms books- or if you already love the series, as I do.

5 out of 5 stars Great Story.......2007-03-21

This collection continues the excellent tradition of Dnd based Fantasy writing established by R.A. Salvatore, Gary Gygax, and many others!

This collection continues an epic saga focused on R.A. Salvatore's most popular characters: Drizz't, Cattie-Brie, etc. It reads fine stand-alone, but I would highly recommend reading the other collector's editions from the beginning just to get the full character backgrounds and history.

In many cases, series that run so long based on the same characters get stale, but surprisingly, each new series of books in this series is as fresh as the first!

Can't wait to read the next one!

*Laugh* Just read the fine print on reviews. THIS PRODUCT IS UNSAFE! YOU WILL LOSE SLEEP AFTER PURCHASING IT!

4 out of 5 stars quick but sloppy.......2006-08-06

the book arrived promptly and the price was fair. I was fairly dissapointed though at the fact that i purchased a brand new book and it arrived with scratches on the cover and a bent corner.

Book Description

The book was hidden well.

It’s pages promised the power of the Witch-King himself.

And now that it’s been found, even the fact that it kills anyone foolish enough to crack its cover won’t stop people from fighting over it.

Welcome to the Bloodstone Lands!

Human assassin Artemis Entreri and his dark elf companion Jarlaxle have come to the demon-haunted wastelands of the frozen north at the request of their dragon patron. It doesn’t take long for them to find themselves caught in the middle of a struggle between powerful forces that would like nothing more than to see them both dead . . . or worse.

But Entreri and Jarlaxle aren’t just any wandering sellswords, and the ancient evils and bitter blood-feuds of the wild Bloodstone Lands may have finally met their match.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A Promising Continuation.......2007-08-10

R.A. Salvatore's Promise of the Witch-King is a continuation of the Sellswords saga which began with Servant of the Shard. Originally part of the Paths of Darkness series, Servant of the Shard branched away from focusing on Drizzt Do'Urden and instead featured his nemesis Artemis Entreri and the rouge drow Jarlaxle. The story starts off at a good pace and only slows in spots. It offers a good bit of insight into the relationship between the assassin and the drow, focusing not on their past, but the growth of both characters. Ever humorous, suspenseful, and action-paced, Promise of the Witch-King is a great follow-up to Servant of the Shard and a good build up to the next book in the series, Road of the Patriarch. Hopefully, there will be much more to come.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing.......2007-05-08

Being an avid FR reader, I never saw this coming. And when i say this I mean the coupling of Entreri and Jalraxle in a series of their own. Salvatore has created a full, detailed and personal background of both characters, which, in addition to his amazing combat illustration and, to my total joy, the side achingly funny comments that both characters spit out at each other; renders this whole series as some of his best work till date.

ps. totaly lost hope of Entreri hooking up with anyone, the ending caught me by surprise!!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful characters!.......2007-02-21

I have to agree with eggs maledict; I believe Jarlaxle and Entreri have now outstripped Drizzt! Reading Servant of the Shard had me wanting more, and when this book came out I devoured it! Sure there were small parts I didn't like too much, but overall this book was one of Salvatore's best. Taking a break from Mithril Hall did him some good!

I love Salvatore's writing style in that he can engage me emotionally. I've read passages that had me sighing and thinking to myself "Yes! That's exactly how I feel, sometimes!". And I get so engaged with his main characters. I didn't give a flip about Ellery, and Calihay - or however her name is spelled - really annoyed me most of the time, but I deeply cared about what was going through Entreri's mind, and yet he didn't go soft on me at all! He's still one cold blooded killer, and I don't see him changing that part any time soon.

And how can I describe my love for Jarlaxle? Yes, he was a tad silly, but that just made him more real to me. He's an opportunistic jackle who's own enthusiasm for EVERYTHING sometimes causes him to slip up. I can't help but smile when he's talking his talk and working that charm, because even though you know he's being dishonest and exasperating, you love him!! Or I do.

All in all, I LOVED this book and series!

4 out of 5 stars Surprisingly Engaging.......2007-02-01

Salvatore developed the character of Artemis very nicely in this book and made it possible for him to be the focus of a series of books. Also there were many new characters added into the book that were never heard about before and Salvatore did a good job of giving each of them their own identity and role in the story development. I was surprised at how much I enjoyed the story and plan on getting the third book in the series.

3 out of 5 stars A tragic Waste!.......2007-01-31

Ok, that may be overstating my point a bit much, but I think we've all come to expect more that a dungeon crawl from Mr. Salvatore. There was a little substance to this one, but so many lengthy battle scenes. Jarlaxle and Entreri have a fascinating dynamic, but that was definitely underemployed in this novel.

Book Description

A new series from New York Times bestselling author R.A. Salvatore!

This book brings two familiar characters into the limelight for the first time! Jarlaxle, a dark elf assassin, and Artemis Entreri, a human assassin, work together and against each other in Calimport. Their conflict is intensified by the influence of the Crystal Shard, a malevolent artifact that has been raousing trouble in the Forgotten Realms world since its introduction in The Crystal Shard.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great Book!!.......2007-09-01

These are two of my favorite characters so I was glad to see that they did a book following them up and once again Salvatore doesn't disappoint!!

5 out of 5 stars No Drizzt? Well it may be even better without our beloved hero........2007-07-07

To some Drizzt fans, it may be a little dissapointing that our beloved drow hero doesnt appear in this novel, besides a few , written, words by hum, and at first I thought it might the novels less interesting as well, but R.A Salvatore fixes this problem by centering this novel around two very , very interesting characters: Jarlaxle and Atremis Entreri.

A great thing about this book is that it tells a darker, and extremely interesting, tale, which is a nice break from all of Drizzt's heroism.

Also, we start to get much deeper into the characters of Jarlaxle and Entreri, and as I've said before they are very very interesting characters. I absolutely love them, although I wouldnt say the say if I actually met them.

A fast paced novel that is sure to please. If your a fan of the series then buy this now! If your new however, you would still enjoy this book, but in order to understand better whats going on, some of the characters mentioned and parts of the plot, its best to start with The Crystal Shard, from the Icewind Dale Trilogy.

5 out of 5 stars Entreri and Jarlaxle take center stage........2007-06-03

Servant of the Shard was first published as book three of the Paths of Darkness series and is included in Paths of Darkness, Collector's Edition (Forgotten Realms). It is the only book of the original 14 Drizzt novels to not be included in the "Legend of Drizzt" series now being reissued.

It is also one of the most enjoyable Salvatore books to date. The Sellswords series follows the adventures of Artemis Enreri and Jarlaxle. This perfect couple is extremely well-developed and are fun to read about. In book 1, the Crystal Shard occupies center stage as the story began in The Silent Blade: The Legend of Drizzt, Book XI (Forgotten Realms Novel: Legend of Drizzt) is continued. The annoyingly pious Cadderly plays a part in the latter parts of the book, but doesn't do too much harm to the story. Excellent fighting scenes and plenty of action make for a fun and exciting read.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars One of R.A. Salvatore's best.......2007-03-14

Don't be scared away by the lack of Drizzt Do'Urden in this finely crafted novel. Although Drizzt is easily Salvatore's best know and "loved" creation, I don't think his more recent novels (mainly the Hunter's Blades Trilogy) really do the renegade drow justice. They fall off and get pretty campy. The interaction between Cattie-Bri and Drizzt, while it was interesting at first, has taken on a sort of mid-day soap opera turn and it tires quickly in my mind.
Artemis Entrerei and Jarlaxle have always been my favorite characters. The depth Salvatore has put into the development of both characters is far more then any of Drizzt's compaions (most notably a certain one-dimentional barbarian...) and even more than Drizzt himself. Artemis's journey to Menzzoberanzan (both in the physical and emotional sense) was very well done I thought. This novel, however, takes place after his return and domination of Calimport with the aid of the Dark Elf band left by the most paradoxical Jarlaxle.
The brilliance in this novel can be summarized by the revalation that by the end, Salvatore has you rooting and cheering on two of the most cold hearted and ruthless killers in Faerun. Their development, both as individual characters and as partners, in this book far surpasses even the silent blade, and the reader is even given a few glimpses into the underlying psyche of both characters.
A very fun and refreshing read for any fan of Salvatore who has gotten a bit bored with the "drama" that had become Drizzt Do'Urden and misses the action from his adventures in the Underdark.
Bottom line: Awsome fantasy novel.

4 out of 5 stars A great debut for this interesting duo.......2007-01-31

Artemis Entreri and Jarlaxle are just great characters and blend so well together. They are so different and yet similar.

The story itself is great and makes Entreri really shine in my opinion. This book could stand on it's own without any other books following.

If you are a fan of Artemis Entreri, Jarlaxle or both, than this book is an absolute must read!

5 out of 5 stars Great book.......2007-09-22

This is one of the few books I have read that I dreaded getting to the ending. I am currently reading the second book and I do not want to read to fast because it is that entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good Book.......2007-07-12

This was a very good book. Stedman ties together sever sub plots that remain from the last book of the War of the Spider Queen "Resurrection".....which was a train wreck. She carries on with the characters from that series and makes them work. This book was very entertaining and an easy read. Steadman made keeping up with the old characters and sever new one easy to do. Lisa Stedman did a very good job with this book.

5 out of 5 stars Awesome sequel to the War of the Spider Queen series!!!.......2007-07-06

I have read the entire war of the spider queen series and it was great! I was excited to here that Lisa Smedman wrote a series to continue where the war left off. This book is really good.

The only thing I would warn people about is to read the War of the Spider Queen series first. If you don't read those 6 books first you will be a bit lost in this book because it all refers to the events that happened during the WotSQ series.

I can't wait to read the next book!!

5 out of 5 stars The best Forgotten Realms or D.......2007-06-24

Reading the Forgotten Realms, Dragon Lance and random D&D books is something of a hobby of mine. Usually it is a guilty pleasure. Wizards if the Coast, the people who brought you MAGIC and (at one time) POKEMON trading card games publish these books. The Editor(s) over there at WotC have an unenviable task: to make these books digestible for thirteen year old boys men in there thirties and aging nerds in various stages of decay.

This coupled with the fact that the writers subscribe to the `type as fast as you possibly can' school of authorship (brought in to prominence by a hopped up Steven King) often leads to a book which is barely readable. For example, these books sometimes end simply by killing all the characters off.

Into this labyrinth of publishing enters the brave hearted Lisa Smedman. Now, anytime Lisa is penning a book you are in for something better then you have any right to expect. (check out her Venoms Kiss trilogy).

With `Sacrifice of the Widow' Lisa has done something really Magical. She has `improved her game'. She has stepped it up, she is getting better and better at what she does! What a rarity!

In this book Lisa infuses the Forgotten Realms lore with subtle references to Greek, Norse and African mythologies. For example, she hints in the epilogue at what Lolths place in the creation of the universe might have been before the fall. Speaking of which, there are many themes and devices, which, because they are executed well, lift this book onto the level of actual literature. The prologue and epilogue frame the action of the book as one or two moves in an extra-dimensional chess or `Sava' game, a battle between the warring dark elf goddesses. Also explored are sociological themes such as the impossibility of male bonding. I can only hope that in future books the dark elves evolve through union of the sexes rather then this ongoing idea that the sexes corrupt each other. But that is probably up to the editor rather then the author.

The descriptions of action scenes are adequate and better then you deserve. The overall suspense and sense of plot are very well crafted indeed. Character development is very worthwhile and a welcome addition.

I could go on and on but the point is you have to read this book to believe it. If you can't afford the $7 do yourself a favor and get to your local library. If they don't have it ask them to order it.

Well I intended to do better at explaining what a gem this book really is but I am out of time. Drop me a line if you have any questions.

4 out of 5 stars surprisingly good..........2007-05-27

First off, let me say that after reading Lisa Smedman's previous book, Extinction, I was very skeptical of her abilities as an author. I thought that book had been the worst of the "War of the Spider Queen" series. I expected that this new one, "Sacrifice of the Widow," would be bad as well. It was far from that. Ms. Smedman has done a great deal to redeem herself as an author in my eyes.

"Sacrifice of the Widow" is suprisingly short for the amount that is crammed within it. It takes a good author to put so many plot lines, main characters, foreshadowing and twists into 320 pages without feeling rushed. I think the story would probably be better served with a 5 book series than a trilogy. Because of this, the characters and unique situations are not given as much attention or development as I would like. This is not by fault of the author, however. It is apparent that there is an overall plot that needs to be resolved and only so many pages within which to do it. Still, I wish more time could have been spent upon the movers and shakers in drow society and the unique interplay between them.

The book starts out simply enough, but turns into a grand game of politics and manipulation between the drow gods Lolth, Selvetarm, Vhaeraun, and Eilistraee. It was wonderful to see how plans folded in upon plans and were twisted by still other plans. By all appearances there was a great amount of foreshadowing for the remaining 2 books laid down in this one. The reprecussions of this book upon all drow society might be quite far reaching--and it's nice to see that the powers that be are not afraid of making significant changes to the highly popular drow mythology. It left me feeling anxious for the continuation of the story and a return of several key characters.

The author does a great job of balancing realism with the fantasy involved. With powerful characters acting and fighting it would be easy to make them seem like unbeatable gods--much like watching an 80's action movie where the hero can shoot all the bad guys with a pistol and they can't manage to hit him once with automatic weapons. Ms. Smedman both keeps every battle tense and stresses the risks and dangers inherent to all combatants. Even when characters can wield powerful magic, there is the realism that a single sword swipe could end it all. Neither does she shy away from describing the powerful abilities of each character. Wizards pull out spell components and throw lightning and fire at their enemies. Clerics heal mortal wounds and bring other back from the dead. All this the author delivers without it feeling like one is reading a transcript of a D&D game session.

So, I take my hat off to Lisa Smedman for a good job with a tough story. Could it have better? Sure....anything can be improved...but this was a quite respectable delivery. My rating of 4 stars instead of 5 most certainly comes from the fact that this should have been spread out into 5 books to do it justice. I'm quite curious how the overall story line was decided and by whom considering it's such a heavily popular topic and has been quite successful for the publisher.

Book Description

It is Henry’s third visit to the Faerie Realm, but this time in a rather different guise and to a rather different kind of place. Holly Blue is Queen and Lord Hairstreak appears to be proposing a truce between the Faeries of the Night and the Faeries of the Light. Meanwhile Prince Pyrgus has stumbled across some mysterious crystal flowers with an apparently formidable secret weapon, and there are rumours of a demon invasion led by Beleth, the Prince of Darkness.

Queen Blue, wary of her uncle’s uncharacteristic generosity, pays a visit to the Spicemaster’s labyrinth in an attempt to divine the possible future of the Realm. She is warned to beware someone close, little realizing just how careful she will need to be – and when she is kidnapped by the most unlikely candidate, the Realm rapidly descends into chaos.

In a thrilling adventure Blue, Pyrgus and Henry will find themselves in the midst of a furious battle to protect the future of the Realm and secure the throne for the rightful ruler.

4 out of 5 stars Another fun addition.......2007-06-29

Another fast paced adventure in this series. The same characters are seen, and Henry's life on Earth is still just as confused. At the opening of the novel he is trying to convince himself that the Fairie Realm is his reation to stress and that he created it all in his mind. Of course he and the reader get to be really confused as he is abducted by aliens and later transported a la Star Trek into the Fairy Realm.

The love Henry and Blue feel for each other is exploited in this and Blue is having a hard time dealing with the pressures of being the Ruler.

While these books are about fairies and magic they have alot more of a tomboyish bent to them than a girly froofy fairy tale. Some very fun scenes happen and clearly this is not the last book in the series.

My favorite books are fantasy and while I may not put this right next to the dragon lance series, I thoroughly enjoyed the set.

5 out of 5 stars It's the third adventure in the chronicles, but leisure readers will find it quite accessible........2007-03-07

A new 'Faerie Wars Chronicles' title for middle-school fantasy enthusiasts will reach both prior fans of The Faerie Wars and newcomers, who will find most accessible the story of the newly crowned Queen Blue, who is trying to rule her new kingdom. Her visit to the Spicemaster brings a warning and when her brother discovers a secret weapon just when Lord Hairstreak offers peace, trouble ensues, furthered by Blue's disappearance just as Henry returns from the Analogue world. It's the third adventure in the chronicles, but leisure readers will find it quite accessible.

3 out of 5 stars Plenty of action and generic protagonists.......2007-10-10

This book is much like your typical popcorn action movie. It has violence and action in every chapter but the every character is two dimensional and very overpowered. Every hero is basicly a one-man-army and rarely thinks of creative ways to beat their opponents. The story line isn't very deep so don't expect a whole lot of twists or surprise endings to the series. The storline also revolves around dwarves which I couldn't really relate to nor did I find them all that interesting but you probably won't have a problem with that. Overall the series is kindof fun to read, they're not painful reads but they arn't works of are either.

5 out of 5 stars A dark time for the Companions of the Hall.......2007-08-21

This book picks up where 'The Thousand Orcs' left off, with the dwarves falling back to Keeper's Dale outside Mithril Hall and Drizzt believing that all of his friends were killed. During his broken-hearted rampages against the orcs, Drizzt encounters Tarathiel and Innovindil, who help bring him back to sanity and then aid him in disrupting the greenskin army. Some characters from Mirabar, introduced in the first book, were further developed here, particularly Torgar Hammerstriker, Shoudra Stargleam, and Nanfoodle. The orc king, Obould Many-Arrows, through blessings from his god and increased support from his kin, becomes a worthy foe for the powerful Companions.

The most attractive thing about this book was the emotional turmoil experienced by all of the characters. Drizzt in particular has a rough time of it, reverting back to the Hunter and struggling with his belief that his friends are dead. Regis, Wulfgar, and Catie-Brie don't know where Drizzt is and are watching Bruenor slowly die. Regis is faced with the responsibility of being Steward of Mithril Hall, being expected to make the right decisions in its defense against the orcs. And everybody is in very desperate straights as the orc horde just continues to grow and there doesn't seem any way the people of the North can hold back the tide.

It is interesting to me that so many people seem to hate Salvatore's recent Drizzt books.. You should know what to expect when you read them, so if you haven't liked the last few, you probably won't like this one (even though I thought it was one of his best). I look forward to reading the last of the trilogy.

1 out of 5 stars The trashiest of Fantasy Pulp.......2007-08-02

RA Salvatore's writing is very pedestrian in style and seems more like a play by play commentary of some D&D game than anything resembling a novel. This book is only recommended for 14 year old fanboys who judge a book's quality by the numbers of magic items carried by the heroes. By itself it is entertaining, but for the well read reader you'd have to wonder why you spent the time reading this when there are so many better books out there.

4 out of 5 stars Not the greatest in the series.......2007-07-27

Im a long time reader of this series, so ive gotten acustomed to Salvatore's style. I thought this trilogy was one of the weaker of the series. However, if you read the series pick it up. It's still worth it. It'll quench that Drizzit addiction one tends to aquire.

5 out of 5 stars The Lone Drow Review by Kyle B........2007-02-28

The Lone Drow
By R.A.Salvatore

I really enjoyed this book. This book is about a wondering elf. He is trying to look for a land of unknown kings. This elf's name is Drizzt. He learns that there is a war of races and kingship. After he travels to the land of the mountains, He meets the king battleaxe. Then they decide to have Drizzt to the land of demons. On the way to the land of the demons he meets up with his old friend. Then they start to talk and then they both realize they are heading the same way. Then on the way they both start to remember that when they new each other back then they like each other and still do. Traveling further on their quest they get attacked by unknown creatures. Then after that they start to travel again. Then they both split up and Drizzt starts to look for the item of the demons. Then he gets there and starts to battle for his life like any other time.

The Thousand Orcs opens a new trilogy starring R.A. Salvatore's popular dark elf Drizzt Do'Urden and his loyal friends Wulfgar, Catti-Brie, Bruenor, and Regis. The band returns from Icewind Dale in the company of the dwarves of Mithril Hall, who are escorting King Bruenor back to reluctantly assume his throne. But, as always, old enemies and new emerge from the shadows to threaten our heroes. Emboldened by a dark alliance with the deadly frost giants, an orcish horde is massing quietly, waiting with uncharacteristic patience to move against dwarves, elves, and humans alike. Meanwhile, Bruenor, sensing that his adventures will come to an end once he takes the throne, coaxes his friends back onto the road, all the while unaware of the powerful forces gathering strength by the roadside.

Salvatore is obviously in his comfort zone with his favorite characters, and fans of the series will no doubt enjoy another bloody romp into danger with Drizzt and company. He even throws in a few mind-blowing surprises for the faithful. However, newcomers to the Forgotten Realms shouldn't start here, as familiarity with Salvatore's brave companions is a necessity despite Salvatore's attempt to provide a skeletal backstory for the uninitiated. Start with The Icewind Dale Trilogy and get to know the gang. --Jeremy Pugh

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars It is what it is.......2007-08-03

I'm surprised by all of the 1- and 2-star reviews for this book. You should know what to expect when you pick up one of RAS's FR novels. If you're looking for high-brow literary masterpieces, stay away. If you're looking for quick, easy, and fun adventure with characters you know and love, this is for you. In my opinion, 'The Thousand Orcs' is no better or worse than the close to twenty other FR novels by Salvatore, and while it shouldn't be considered on the par with the best fantasy out there, it is what it is. Even though I know there are many other books that would outshine these books (and not near enough time to read them all), I still find myself coming back time and again for a little adventure with Drizzt and Co.

'The Thousand Orcs' picks up right where 'Sea of Swords' left off. The companions are reunited (with the addition of Delly Curtie and baby Colsen), and Bruenor and the gang are setting off for Mithril Hall where Bruenor will take up the kingship. Unbeknownst to them, a powerful leader has emerged in the orc tribes of the Spine of the World, uniting the orcs and allying with a band of frost giants and renegade drow. As Drizzt and Co. travel to Mithril Hall they encounter many signs of heavy orc activity and decide to patrol the region and warn its inhabitants of the danger. They also make a stop at Mirabar, a rival of Mithril Hall, to stir up trouble and remind Mirabar's dwarves of their heritage. I'm sure that story will progress further in the rest of the trilogy. The Bouldershoulder brothers play a prominent role in this book, as they go through some pretty random-seeming adventures on their way to witness the coronation of King Bruenor. The whole book comes down to a desperate situation with the Companions being trapped in the town of Shallows during a siege of overwhelming strength. The final battle takes up the majority of the second half of the book and is quite intense.

This book didn't really do too much to further the overall storyline of Drizzt and friends, except for getting Bruenor closer to accepting his role as King of Mithril Hall. The relationship between Drizzt and Catie-Brie is getting rather old and moving nowhere, Regis has had some sort of epiphany about his role in life, and Wulfgar has essentially returned to his old self but with more maturity.

So, if you like the previous Drizzt novels, you'll probably like this one too. Don't let the cover fool you however, this one isn't any darker or more mature (other than using the word 'bitch' a couple of times) than the others.

2 out of 5 stars Predictable Prose.......2007-08-02

RA Salvatore's writing is very pedestrian in style and seems more like a play by play commentary of some D&D game than anything resembling a novel. This book is only recommended for 14 year old fanboys who judge a book's quality by the numbers of magic items carried by the heroes.

1 out of 5 stars Awful book - don't bother.......2007-07-29

I read a lot of d&d novels back in the 1990s when I was a teenager and didn't know any better. I remember Salvatore being one of my favorites. Before reading The Thousand Orcs, I hadn't read anything of his in probably 10 years or more. When I picked it up, I knew I would be getting a trashy fantasy novel. I just didn't realize HOW trashy a fantasy novel it would turn out to be.

To sum up my reaction: Salvatore's prose in this book is incredibly heavy-handed, repeatedly bombarding us with explicitly-spelled out details that we, as the reader, should already know because he's already told us, as if we were three years old, many times before.

This book also drags along incredibly slowly. Most of its 300+ pages is spent assuring us that Drizzt and co are old friends and yet, despite supposedly knowing each other better than they know the backs of their own hands, they still stumble awkwardly through their dialogue as if they had only just met moments before.

Nothing very exciting really happens in this book. It comes across as more of a disgustingly bloated prologue than a novel in its own right.

The worst parts of the book involve the bumbling and annoying Bouldershoulder brothers, originally from Salvatore's other FR series. He appears to be attempting to mesh his two series together but it fails miserably. And enough with the awful stereotypical "old-timey/country bumpkin" dwarf accents already!

In closing, it is quite clear that Salvatore, like JK Rowling, no longer has an editor. The Thousand Orcs could very easily have been edited down to a short story, if not a handful of chapters. Perhaps the entire trilogy could have been shortened to just one book. I haven't read the other two in the series, and I'm not sure I want to ...

That's all from me.

5 out of 5 stars A return to the world of the Forgotten Realms.......2007-04-11

R.A. Salvatore brings us back to the world of the Forgotten Realms, the story brings us back to the life of Drizzt Do'Urden a renegade Dark Elf that has turned his back on his evil heritage and walks the path of a hero.

The Orc king Obould Many Arrows has bounced back from his previous defeat at the hands of the Dwarves. Under the manipulation of the Drow (Dark Elves), Obould has allied with the Queen of the Frost Giants, Gerti. They have started mounting small scale raids against the Dwarves, killing several small bands.

At the same time Bruenor, the new Dwarven King of Mithral Hall, is travelling home with Drizzt and his heroic companions. They stop by the rival city of Mirabar and are rebuffed by the human leaders. This is an affront to Mirabar's Dwarven population and sows the seed of rebellion which will lead to further strife.

King Bruenor continues his travels home, to find the last two survivors of the Orcs raid on a dwarven trade caravan. Bruenor quickly gives them shelter and orders an all out search for the raiding Orcs. The battle that insues is very one sided, even with the Orc's Giant allies.

Queen Gerti orders that the killers of her Giant kin must be destroyed, a command that leads to the momentous events of the climax. The Orc King leads his people in an overwhelming attack against the Dwarven host.

The Dwarves are eventually driven to the small human outpost of Shallows. Shallows is ruled by a wizard who has built its walls high and strong, but they were not designed to take on an army of Orcs and Giants. The battle brings Elves, Dwarves, and Men together to defend Shallows from the forces of evil.
The story and characters are well written. Even though it is the first book in the trilogy, the characters have a long background in the other books that the author has written in this world, so I would not recommend reading this book out of order with the rest. It is a fast, gritty and entrancing tale of swords, sorcery and intrigue. The action and adventure is very good. For fans of the fantasy genre it is a must read.

5 out of 5 stars Captivating.......2007-02-05

As always I was captivated by R. A. Salvatore's excellent writing. He did a great job at bringing into play new characters and merged them well into the lives of the already well-known characters I love.

3 out of 5 stars Charmingly predictable... .......2007-08-13

...and as I wrote regarding the Trickster series that is just fine. Plot twists are clearly telegraphed, bad guys are quite bad. Good guys are very good. There is one exception to this trend in this series that I thought was a nice touch. The Immortals series gets off to a rocky start. The first volume has a bit of excessive exposition aimed at younger readers and when handled well that is fine, but in this case it is a bit ham-fisted in places.

As other readers have noted the country bumpkin routine gets somewhat tiresome in the first volume, but things pick up and accelerate through the series. This seems to be par for the course for Ms. Pierce. Usually books in a series tend to go downhill as they progress, but that is not the case here.

For adult readers these are bite sized morsels. I was able to plow through the third volume in an evening. For younger readers I suspect these are paced about right.

I do wish these "quartets" came in one or two volumes.

5 out of 5 stars About Daine and Numair.......2007-04-13

Concerning the age difference between Daine and Numair, remember that this story takes place in medieval-like times.

Throughout history, it has been typical for adult men to marry girls who have just reached puberty. It wasn't sicko. In those times, it made good sense. A woman's job was to have babies and keep house. She could do those things at 13. A man's job was to provide for the family. He could do that better if he was older. Practicality mattered more than romance. Of course, Pierce's heroines are wonderful role models for modern girls.

Like other readers, I would like to see more of their relationship. There isn't enough in the (wonderful) Protector of the Small series. Maybe there will be more books.

I am pleasantly surprised that prudes have not complained about Daine been nude throughout so much of the book.

5 out of 5 stars You'll be surprised and blown away! .......2007-03-31

Daine is now a young lady and is still Numair Salamin's student. While Daine and Numair are in a battle with a new immortal called a skinner they're swept away into the Divine Realms where gods and immortals live. In this place Daine see's somebody she hasn't seen in years and meets someone new that she wished she'd seen before.

While they are happy not to be dead they know that they are needed down in the mortal world where Ozorne and his creatures are coming against Tortall. They need to find help and get out of the Divine Realms before it's too late for Daine knows that Tortall's fate rests in her hands.

In this book you'll find Romance too! Which is something a lot of people will enjoy. If you've been reading the series you'll probably know who Daine's going to fall in love with but you'll still be excited. This is a wonderous book so read 'THE REALMS OF THE GODS'!

5 out of 5 stars Goods received.......2007-03-14

The product was provided in a timely manner and was is very good condition and communication was received indicating timeframes throughout the delivery process which was quite good to see.

5 out of 5 stars Action, Romance, Magic...what more could you need?.......2007-01-05

Daine is a young girl with a rare magical gift, she can speak with animals. She is now traveling with her teacher Numair to battle off a strange creater known as a skinner. While there Daine and Numair are swept off into the Divine Realms.

This is one of Tamora Pierce's best books! And it has romance, my favorite! But it is pretty easy to tell who Daine's going to fall for. (Hmm...hint: He's got the gift, older than her. Oh I won't give it away!) Daine is a wonderful character with the coolest gift of all. I mean, who wouldn't want to talk to animals AND even turn into them? Well read THE REALMS OF THE GODS!

This title is the third and final book in the latest trilogy from R.A. Salvatore, which once again features his popular dark elf character Drizzt Do’Urden™. The hardcover release of this title had the highest debut ever on The New York Times best seller list for a Salvatore title with Wizards of the Coast at #4. The title stayed in the top twenty for five weeks. Both of the previous titles in the series were also New York Times best sellers upon hardcover release, and the first title, The Thousand Orcs, hit the list upon mass-market release as well.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Shallow Writing for Shallow Readers.......2007-08-02

RA Salvatore's writing is very pedestrian in style and seems more like a play by play commentary of some D&D game than anything resembling a novel. This book is only recommended for 14 year old fanboys who judge a book's quality by the numbers of magic items carried by the heroes.

4 out of 5 stars Drizzt Still Has It, Mostly.......2006-12-31

The protagonist certainly lives a tortured life: wanting to be part of life topside but the target of bigotry that effectively excludes him for the most part. This is what makes his few close friends even more valuable, which is why I dropped one star. His companions seemed a bit plastic and two-dimensional at times. I hope that the author is not getting tired of this world and these characters, and can rejuvenate them a bit in future offerings.

5 out of 5 stars Great.......2006-11-15

The lastest one in a great number of book on Drizzt, and surprising enough I'm not tired of him yet! I read this one almost overnight, every entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Reveiw for last book in Hunter's Blade Trilogy........2006-11-06

As this is the last book the the Hunter's Blade Trilogy, and the story of Drizzt Do'Urden, this book lives up to what it's supposed to be: gripping, dramatic, and full of action. This book is all good because it ends how all good fantasy books should end: evil guy dies, and they all live happily ever after.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Tantalizing.......2006-11-04

R.A. Salvatore has outdone himself. I couldn't put the book down. I continue now to read the new books coming out of the story of Drizzt, Artemis, and the rest. I almost hope that the story of Drizzt and the others does not end!
