Book Description

It's raining cats and dogs! Good thing Rover is snuggled safe and dry inside his doghouse--until, one by one, a soggy menagerie of creatures shows up looking for a cozy place to sit out the storm. But who's the very unwelcome surprise visitor? Skunk, of course. Suddenly that doghouse isn't quite so crowded after all!

5 out of 5 stars Makes my 3-year-old laugh every time!.......2007-09-27

I'll never forget the first time I read this book to my 3-year-old daughter - she started laughing about halfway through the book, and by the end we were both giggling up a storm. We've read this book every night before bed ever since. Needless to say, this is currently her favorite book.

The text is simple, consise and short, which is nice for the parent who may be reading this book at the end of the day. And the illustrations are captivating. They draw my daughter in to the story as she looks for Rover, the cat, the squirrel, the racoon, the snake and the mouse on selected pages. And the part that consistently gets her giggling is the repeated rhyming text in the middle of the book that always ends with, "Move over, Rover!"

My twins received this book when they were 18 months old and have loved it! Now they tell each other, "move over, Rover" and "skit-skat, Cat" all the time they love to talk about the stinky skunk. I have since been giving this book as a 2-year-old birthday present and everyone we've given it to says how much their children enjoy it, too. With great illustrations and fun concepts, we highly recommend this book.

As a former school librarian, I can say I love this picture book. The second time we read it, my 3-year-old grandchildren & I were delighted to realize that the skunk is visible in the doghouse all along--if you look closely.

      Book Description

To read of sea roving's various incarnations - piracy, privateering, buccaneering, la flibuste, la course - is to bring forth romantic, and often violent, imagery. Indeed, much of this imagery has become a literary and cinematic clich?. And what an image it is!

But its truth is by halves, and paradoxically it is the picaresque imagery of Pyle, Wyeth, Sabatini, and Hollywood that is often closer to the reality, while the historical details of arms, tactics, and language are often inaccurate or entirely anachronistic.

Successful sea rovers were careful practitioners of a complex profession that sought wealth by stratagem and force of arms. Drawn from the European tradition, yet of various races and nationalities, they raided both ship and town throughout much of the world from roughly 1630 until 1730. Using a variety of innovative tactics and often armed with little more than musket and grenade, many of these self-described "soldiers and privateers" successfully assaulted fortifications, attacked shipping from small craft, crossed the mountains and jungles of Panama, and even circumnavigated the globe. Successful sea rovers were often supreme seamen, soldiers, and above all, tacticians. It can be argued that their influence on certain naval tactics is felt even today.

The Sea Rover's Practice is the only book that describes in exceptional detail the tactics of sea rovers of the period - how they actually sought out and attacked vessels and towns. Accessible to both the general and the more scholarly reader, it will appeal not only to those with an interest in piracy and in maritime, naval, and military history, but also to mariners in general, tall-ship and ship-modeling enthusiasts, tacticians and military analysts, readers of historical fiction, writers, and the adventurer in all of us.

5 out of 5 stars A prime resource to Pirate strategy.......2007-09-25

An excellent resource to understand the how-to of piracy. From firing a broadside to boarding, it gives the reader a handle on how the pirates were able to outfight and outsail their prey with smaller ships and sometimes fewer guns.

      5 out of 5 stars The Sea Rover's Practice.......2007-08-09

This book is not an easy read, but it's not intended to be. If you like histories of pirates or Colonial America, this is a vital reference.
The author details every aspect of the sea rover's life - ships, weapons, gear, even their compensation system.

Mr. Little is a retired US Navy SEAL officer and his experience shows, especially when discussing strategy and tactics.

The numerous appendices make this a work I'll refer to many times in the future.

5 out of 5 stars Relevant to studies of modern insurgencies and security contractors.......2007-06-23

This is a great backgrounder on what really was behind the privateers, buccaneers / boucaniers, filibusters / flibustier, and pirates. Focusing on a hundred year period beginning in 1630, the former Navy SEAL draws on contemporary diaries and books to describe everything from the background, motivation, tactics, equipment, and even an appendix on drinks. The reality of the sea rover's tactics are in stark contrast to the image of the Hollywood pirate. The reality were crews and officers operating under very democratic rules and performing complex operations seeking to maximize effort (return on investment).

Appropriate to the modern era of small wars? Little generally leaves it to the reading to connect to the present (absent a rare couple of modern analogies in the book), except for one paragraph at the end:

"Whatever their vices, weaknesses, and moral ambiguities, these buccaneers have in common with most sea rovers several tactical virtues, including innovation, loyalty, perseverance, adaptability, and courage. Collectively, they prove that a loose, uncentralized, and informal network can conduct significant, complex military operations. They show the effect that an irregular force can have on the resources of a powerful state, causing great economic damage and tying down significant forces. And, most importantly, they demonstrate that elements of broadly divergent and disparate cultures, races, nationalities, classes, professions, and personalities can act as one with a common goal."

My brief comments here don't do the book justice. The amount of detail Little puts in this book is sometimes mind boggling, not to say amazing. This is not a book that only looks at the past but has surprising applicability to modernity.

I have found it particularly useful in supporting various arguments about privatization of force as well as insurgent warfare.

      5 out of 5 stars From first-person source materials.......2007-06-05

THE SEA ROVER'S PRACTICE: PIRATE TACTICS AND TECHNIQUES 1630-1730 is based largely on first-person accounts and describes how pirates and buccaneers made sea roving a profitable business. Successful pirating was conducted on the high seas to acquire wealth: chapters come from first-person source materials and reveal all the basic details perfect for any general-interest collection where lively history is of interest.

5 out of 5 stars Detailed Account of Pirate Strategy in the Caribbean.......2007-05-20

"The Sea Rover's Practice: Pirate Tactics and Techniques, 1630-1730" by Benerson Little is a great reference tool for anyone interested in the in-depth details of how buccaneers, privateers, and pirates of the West Indies commanded and conquered.

Do not expect a storyline or biographies in this book. It is solely about tactics, as stated in the subtitle. Each section is filled with detail after fascinating detail about pirate battle strategies. You get a real understanding of why a pirate would, for instance, chose a particular weapon to use during the boarding of a ship, examining everything from the weapon's overall capacity to maim to the sturdiness of the materials used to construct it.

The book's first chapter talks of greed and desperation and the last chapter covers dying by the sword. In between, you learn about pirate ships, recruiting, arms used in close combat, watches, flags, cruising strategies, mutiny, broadsiding, pirate tricks, and many other topics. There are also appendices with items like pirate vocabulary and recipes, as well as illustrations depicting weapons (guns, swords, cannons, etc.) and the best boarding positions.

Altogether, the book is easy to read, thorough, and loaded with information. I definitely recommend it to those who want to learn more about the real pirates of the Caribbean.

For those who prefer biographies (or less strategy and more story), read David Cordingly's "Under the Black Flag" for an engrossing look at piracy throughout the ages.

      Book Description

Aphra Behn (1640-89) was both successful and controversial in her own lifetime; her achievements are now recognized less equivocally and her plays, often revived, demonstrate wit, compassion and remarkable range. This edition brings together her most important comedies in a single volume: The Rover, her best-known play; The Feigned Courtesans, a lively comedy of intrigue; The Lucky Chance, a comedy with a bitter edge, which takes a satirical look at marriage customs; and the dazzling and popular farce, The Emperor of the Moon. Under the General Editorship of Michael Cordner of the University of York, the plays have been newly edited and are presented with modernized spelling and punctuation. Detailed annotation helps the reader to visualize the plays in performance and the Introduction argues for the importance of Behn's skilful stagecraft and her great success as an entertainer.

3 out of 5 stars Great text, frustrating format........2005-10-26

The text is fabulous. Providing access to an underappreciated female writer is desperately needed. The modernized spelling is wonderfully accessible. But using endnotes rather than footnotes to explain all unusual words, references, etc. is unbelievably frustrating. And not even endnotes after each play - endnotes at the end of the book! I am dizzy from flipping back and forth several times each page to the end of the book.

4 out of 5 stars Well-laid out text, excellent foreward.......1999-11-16

Recently introduced to the works of Aphra Behn, I found this collection to be an excellently laid out edition of some of her plays. The print is friendly to the eye (many collections of Restoration drama are not) and easy to read. I can only speak for "The Rover", as I have not had the time to read the rest of the plays. However, I found the notes and the forewards to the plays to be informative and easy to follow. It must be said that the notes were contained in the back of the book, as opposed to the bottom of the page; that was a bit of an irritant, especially when reading a crucial scene. On the whole however, I give this book a thumbs up!

      Book Description

The secret to protecting the civilized world from an ancient threat may lie in the pages of three books and it is up to master librarians of the past and present to secure this knowledge. Set in the years after Lord of the Libraries, young halfer Juhg is still growing into his job as Grandmagister when an ally from the past, the wizened wizard Craugh, returns with warnings of an ancient threat that may resurfacethe so-called Kharrions Wrath, which endangers the existence of the world. Juhg must now unlock the secrets contained in the journals of his now absent mentor Wick, the former Grandmagister and legendary hero known as The Rover. He must also continue his documented but clandestine search for a trilogy of books, which brings him through many different realms of their very dangerous world and into conflict and contact with other races (elves, dwarves, and men) whose fates are all intertwined among the pages of the great book of Time. The Quest for the Trilogy weaves three separate quests into one as the young historian races against the clock to protect not just his world, but all others as well.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Blend of Adventure and Humor.......2007-08-06

Wick has disappeared off on another adventure, and the wizard Craugh has again enlisted newly-appointed Grandmagister Juhg for help. Wick left behind a trilogy of books that describe a previous adventure where he searched for legendary treasure. Left incomplete, Juhg must now take up the quest to find the trilogy and follow Wick's trail to the treasure and the truth about the traitor of a famous battle.

This story focuses mainly on the past adventures of Wick and also shows the beginnings of his friendship with Craugh. While Wick is cowardly and seemingly-dimwitted at times, he also has moments of heroism and a great deal of book knowledge that gets him out of sticky situations.

With lovable characters, swash-buckling action, and light-hearted humor, The Quest for the Trilogy is another fantastic installment in this fantasy series. Each new addition becomes my favorite in the series!

5 out of 5 stars Another homerun for Mel Odom!.......2007-08-03

This sequel to Lord of the Libraries returns us to Mel Odom's world of elves, dwarves, wizards and (hobbit-like) dwellers. Grandmagister Juhg is trying to spread his dream of libraries returning enlightenment to the world that was so desperately ravaged during the Cataclysm, but the elves, dwarves and humans cannot shake their mutual distrust. Just what really happened at the Battle of Fell's Keep, and betrayed whom? It's a question that seems to have no answer.

However, quick as a wink, the great wizard Craugh has whisked Juhg off on a new adventure. It turns out that the three magical weapons that were used at the Battle of Fell's Keep are the answer to the riddle, but someone else is after them, and if Juhg doesn't get to them first a new Cataclysm may be awaiting a tired and traumatized world!

Overall, I found this to be a very good book, and another home run for Mel Odom! I like his world, which is set in the aftermath of a great crisis, unlike most Fantasy books (such as The Lord of the Rings), I like how he treats the magical races that are a part of so many books, and I like his characters. Plus, the storyline is completely gripping. So, if you like a good book of elves, dwarves and wizards, then you will love this book. I know I did!

5 out of 5 stars Familiar ingredients blended into an original stew.......2007-07-15

Are you ready to read a good adventure-fantasy-mystery story about arrogant nearly-immortal bow-wielding elves, gruff but big-hearted axe-wielding dwarves, clever but short-lived and sometimes untrustworthy humans, crotchety but very powerful wizards (some good, some evil, some with pointy hats and beards), a supposedly-dead dragon that might not be quite as dead as everyone thought, some enchanted weapons, lots of ancient treachery causing long-standing feuds, and small beings called "dwellers" who wear no shoes but have a knack for unexpected heroics, narrow escapes, and journal-writing? If you are, you've found exactly that, and much more. This is the fourth book in the "Rover" series, but do not let that dissuade you, as I enjoyed it greatly, despite not having (yet) read the first three.

This story actually started a thousand years earlier, when humans, elves, and dwarves joined forces to oppose Lord Kharrion, an evil being bent upon world domination. If you are starting to think to yourself, "Oh, I don't need another retelling of `The Lord of the Rings'," don't worry, as that is not what this is, despite many communalities in the ingredients. This is a prime example of how a good author can take a familiar premise with many well-known and well-used ideas, and weave a very original tale. The combined army, a millennium ago, was defeated at the Battle of Fell's Keep, and there was treachery involved.

Using a complex format of story-telling, we start with Juhg, a dweller (hobbit-like being) who works in the Library in the Vault of All Known Knowledge. Juhg sets out to help people overcome their fear of books, even though books do tend to attract and enrage the goblin kin (think of orcs). Right at the outset, he is rescued from a brawl by a wizard named Craugh, who was a good friend of Juhg's mentor, the now-vanished Edgewick "Wick" Lamplighter. Craugh and a group of pirates manage to manipulate Juhg into going off on a quest for three journals, secretly written and hidden by Wick. Craugh is not totally forthcoming about why he wants to find Wick's missing journals, but the group grows to include a talking skink, a talking cat, a talking donkey, a thief who is not a thief, and a dwarf who seeks to clear his family name.

The story is really mainly about Wick's not-quite-successful search for three magical weapons, but Juhg must find Wick's journals in order to complete that incomplete mission. The further that Juhg progresses toward finding and decoding the journals, the more enemies he encounters and the more his life is in danger.

Despite shifting back and forth between the story of Wick and the story of Juhg, this story flows quickly and well. The characters (major and minor), settings, weapons, and monsters are described thoroughly, helping the reader clearly envision the action. Despite themes of ancient treachery, attempted murder, enormous monsters, complex intrigues, and narrow escapes, the tone of the story ends up being somewhat lighter than in Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" and reminded me more of R.A. Salvatore's The Icewind Dale Trilogy Collector's Edition (A Forgotten Realms(r) Omnibus). The story is definitely not as dark as George R.R. Martin's "Song of Ice and Fire" series, and the writing is not as complex or as detailed as Robin Hobb's "Farseer" trilogy (see Assassin's Apprentice (The Farseer Trilogy, Book 1). It is clear that Mr. Odom loves the characters he has created here and their post-Apocalyptic (or post-Cataclysmic) world. "The Quest for the Trilogy" is one of those tales that makes the reader feel that he or she has found a new place to visit, where interesting people and places can be found. I, for one, want to go back, and read more "Rover" tales, to find out more about the adventures of Wick and Craugh.

5 out of 5 stars great "literary" fantasy.......2007-03-26

After Grandmagister Edgewick "Wick" Lamplighter vanished while searching for rare books and fighting off evil doers, his assistant recently promoted Grandmagister Juhg wants to stay home studying how to establish schools throughout the realm. However wizard Craugh directs him to continue Wick's quest so Juhg searches for three encrypted journals that belonged to the missing Grandmagister.

Upon completing the first leg of his literary quest by finding the journals, Juhg reads the Wick entries of seeking three magical weapons lost after the battle of Fell's Keep. Craugh says these artifacts are needed to stop an evil person from employing a weapon of mass destruction. As he goes into the field on his quest, Juhg also battles the malevolent Goblinkin who care little that the world is in peril.

This is a terrific entry in one of the best fantasy series on the market today (see LORD OF THE LIBRARIES). The story line is fast-paced even when the plot pays homage to libraries. Especially fascinating is Juhg "reading" Wicks' journals as if he is Wick (that segment is worth the price of admission). Fantasy quest fans will appreciate Mel Odom's latest thriller in which once again the hero hopes to prove that the pen is mightier than the sword.

5 out of 5 stars Mel has done what few authors have done.............2007-03-22

With the fourth book in his Rover series, Mel has done what few authors have done, hooked me on a fantasy world. Yet again, Mel weaves a compelling tale of fantasy and adventure full of wonderful characters. The story has two parts, Jugh in the present and Second Level Librarian, Wick in the past.

Juhg is now the Grandmagister of the Vault of All Known Knowledge. He is trying to reintroduce books and reading to the world. His passion to bring this knowledge is supported by his best friend, Raisho, and his most powerful ally, the wizard Craugh. The story opens with Juhg meeting a diverse group of humans, elves and dwarves on the mainland. He is asking for help to establish the schools and libraries on the mainland. He is met with both resistance by some and open interest by others.

Juhg is attacked by bogbeasts, a new type of enemy, and launched into another quest. Craugh has recruited him to finish a quest started years before by Jugh's mentor, Wick. The evil of Lord Kharrion has not passed. Kharrion's diabolical ambitions infected the world and still fester to this day. Someone betrayed the Unity at the last battle, and that betrayal has stained relations between the races ever since. For a thousand years, the Dwarven leader Oskarr has been blamed for the betrayal and his descendents have lived with that burden. Wick left three books hidden throughout the lands for Juhg to find and finally put the past to rest.

Wick's story is told in flashbacks and starts with Wick being shanghaied, again, by Craugh and the dwarven pirate crew of the One Eyed Peggy. Craugh needs Wick to help him find and defeat Kharrion's last weapon. To do so he must recover three magical weapons lost for a thousand years and finally solve the mystery of who betrayed the Unity.

Boneslicer is a magical battle axe imbued with the power of the Earth. Mastersmith Oskarr created it and the other weapons. He eventually discovered it was cursed at the last battle and was coveted by Kharrion. He hid it to keep Kharrion from using it as part of his great weapon.

Seaspray was a great magical weapon Oskarr created with Boneslicer. Wielded by the great human hero, Captain Duluan, it is imbued with the power of the Seas. It was lost at the last battle to the goblinkin, but later stolen back and hidden by one of Duluan's heirs.

Deathwhisper was the third weapon Oskarr crafted and is the great magical bow of Sokadir, Prince of the Elves. He is the last surviving hero and still has his bow. Deathwhisper has the power of the storms. Each hit is like lighting bolt. Sokadir has left the world of elves in grief over the loss of his sons at the last battle. He is haunted by the betrayal.

Wick must recover the magical weapons and reunite them to defeat Kharrion's Wrath. With the help of Craugh, Brandt and his band of thieves, the crew of the One Eyed Peggy and some not-so-helpful talking animals Wick finds the missing weapons and defeats Kharrion's Wrath. But he cannot put the mystery of the betrayal to rest. That task is left to Jugh, his apprentice and successor as Grandmagister.

Wick left Jugh three journals, hidden for safekeeping. These journals hold the evidence of who actually betrayed the Unity a thousand years ago and how that person could destroy the future Wick, Jugh and the rest have fought so hard to bring about. Juhg and Craugh must defeat the last remnant of Lord Kharrion's evil if the races are ever to rebuild the Unity and defeat the evil goblinkin.

      Book Description

Edgewick Lamplighter (Wick to his friends) is a humble librarian in the isolated halls of Greydawn Moors until dreams of wanderlust and a bit of dereliction in his duties result in his being shanghaied to a far-off land.Captured by pirates, sold into slavery, and adopted by a gang of thieves, Wick soon finds himself with more adventures than even a halfling librarian can imagine.Rival gangs, goblin marauders, evil wizards, and monstrous dragons are soon after the wee adventurer and his newfound allies in a tale of treasures and treachery, magic and mystery, where even a little guy can rise to the occasion and save the day.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and clever.......2007-08-14

This is the first fantasy adventure book I can remember reading where the hero beats the bad-guys using his skills as a librarian. What are those skills? Knowledge of history, knowledge about people and animals (acquired through books), etc. With each part of the book, I was wondering how librarian skills could help little Wick out.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than Eragon!.......2007-05-03

If my students are really craving more Tolkein-esque fantasy, I will steer them toward this, instead of Eragon. The Rover is much better written, more exciting, and far, far more satisfying.

This is an extremely readable and well-balanced book. Halfling librarian with penchant for adventure stories (which hamper his success in the library) is shanghaied by pirates, sold into slavery and welcomed into a band of thieves. The basis of his success??-- his vast knowledge acquired by reading. "I'm a librarian," Wick declared proudly. "It's my job to know something about everything."

Middle school fantasy readers are voracious and picky. This book is just what I needed for them.Hefty, the first of four books, high fantasy but not inaccessible, humorous, well-paced (explanations of history are always followed by a rollicking adventure, and yes, it is necessary to use rollicking!), and gently philosophical. It's one thing to try to tell a Tolkein type story(like Eragon) and another entirely to succeed in bringing a new and personal twist to the story.

There is no doubt that there are comparisons between Wick and the Hobbits, but it's not fair to say that Wick just wants to be at home. Through his reading, Wick has always enjoyed a good adventure; it's the realization that real adventures sometimes involve uncomfortable arrows to the posterior that renders him slightly reluctant. Who among us would not be?

This is a must-have in a middle school collection. I can't wait to read the rest. In fact, I am going to need more than one copy of the first book! Tor, get this back in print in hardcover!

      2 out of 5 stars The Rover.......2007-03-29

The Rover by Mel Odom isn't the worst book I've read, but it is subpar. Odom's main character, Edgewick "Wick" Lamplighter, is boring. The secondary characters outshine Wick and the first part of this book drags terribly. It isn't until the introduction of the thieves that the book gets interesting. Sadly, that interest isn't sustained. Subsequent events prove predictable and uninspired. With that said, younger readers might enjoy this book more than older readers. Personally, I think I'll pass on the sequals.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful start to a great fantasy series.......2007-03-06

Wick is a dweller (akin to a hobbit) and Third-Level Librarian for the Vault of All Known Knowledge. His father is disappointed in him for not following him in to the lamp lighting business. And his supervisor is hard on him for reading so many adventure stories instead of educational materials.

Through a humorous misunderstanding, Wick finds himself shanghaied aboard a pirate ship. Little Wick has many adventures that lead him into danger, but he learns a lot about the world and himself along the way.

This series is compared to Lord of the Rings, but it's much more light-hearted and easier to read. The character Wick is fun and endearing. The story is both adventurous and humorous. And I love Odom's style of writing.

5 out of 5 stars I strongly recommend this book........2006-12-05

Although there are several parallels between this book and Tolkien's Lord of the Rings, I think it is a diservice to look at it as just another clone of the Hobbit. Mel's world, while inhabited with all the typical fantasy creatures is it's own world. He tells a story that is unlike any other. The one thing that I enjoyed above all else about this book, is that I can read it to my son. It is very kid friendly. The characters are rich and easy to see in your mind. The setting is well done and the adventures of Wick are fun. I have started reading it to my 7 year old. My son loves the story so far.
After I read this book the first time, I learned that the author, Mel Odom, lived near me and taught writing. I have read several of his books, and they are all enjoyable. I decided to take his class, as I want to be a writer myself. Mel loves to write and he loves to teach others to write. He believes in the importance of the story teller in our society. More than all of this, he is a good writer. All of his books that I have read draw me in and hold me. I cannot put them down. His versatility is inspiring. He has not let himself be pigeonholed by one genre or series. His writing is easy to read and enjoyable. Pick one up.

        5 out of 5 stars Comprehensive Guide.......2005-08-15

A very good in technical guide. It is the official workshop manual and does cover all the questions asked. Expensive but for my purposes has saved a lot that would have have otherwise been spent on questionable garage staff expertise.

4 out of 5 stars Good shop manual.......2004-12-19

I use my copy of this manual all the time -- I find it a hundred percent better and more convenient than the cheap CD versions. As with any modern hi tech vehicle, people expecting the basic shop manual to cover such things as electronic troubleshooting and computer diagnostics will be disappointed. (There is a separate Electrical Troubleshooting Manual). However for complete coverage of general maintenance, engine, body, mechanical and other work this is the one to have. It explains such systems as the air suspension in considerable detail, and tells you how to remove and replace almost any part on the vehicle. While it cannot make you completely independent of the dealer it has tons of diagrams and is very comprehensive. It easily pays for itself the first time you fix something yourself!!

3 out of 5 stars Contains Very General Information Only, Not User-Friendly.......2004-03-13

For the 1995-2001 Range Rover (P38A) owner hoping to perform their own service, this book provides only cursory guidance. The P38A was intentionally designed to be serviced by Land Rover trained personnel using proprietary equipment and this book seems intended as a series of reminders for those people. As a result, the information is not presented in an explicit and detailed fashion. Illustrations are plentiful but certainly not exhaustive. This book suffers from usability problems: it lacks an index, there are numerous editing errors that fail to properly capture model year changes, and the cumbersome layout is printed two pages per sheet and rotated 90 degrees. If your goal is to learn a bit more about the features and function of your P38A and/or to have an intelligent conversation with a Land Rover Authorized mechanic, than you are less likely to be disappointed. The steep $104 price is hardly justified by the material but if you can afford to own and maintain one of these fantastic vehicles, the price is probably not an issue.

        Book Description

Constructed wetlands are proving to be the best natural treatment system for landfill leachates. Most of the contaminants in landfill leachates are degraded in treatment wetlands. Potential for long-term sustainability and significant cost savings are attractive features of this eco-technology. Documentation of the experience in this use of constructed wetlands has been limited. Constructed Wetlands for the Treatment of Landfill Leachates is the first compilation of the results of research from North America and Europe. Originally presented at an international symposium, this collection of papers offers the most recent research findings from the leading researchers in this new and innovative natural treatment system. Specific issues addressed in the text include: o leachate characteristics, and the potential for treatability by constructed wetlands o wetland treatment, processes and transformation o use of constructed wetlands in cold climatic conditions o assessment of the tolerance of wetland plants to the toxicity of leachates o role of plants in the treatments of leachates o integrated wetland systems o performance of different wetland treatment systems o cost comparisons of wetland technology vs. traditional treatment technologies The potential for environmental contamination due to leachates from landfills is increasing, and there is an urgent need to find ways and means to treat leachates in a sustainable way Constructed Wetlands for the Treatment of Landfill Leachates will provide an invaluable source of information on the subject for scientists, engineers, practitioners, policy makers, and regulatory officials.
