As the best-selling introductory Spanish textbook in the United States,
Puntos de partida has long been a favorite of instructors across the country. For this new edition, the authors and editors of
Puntos have turned to those very instructors to help formulate a plan that would respond to the needs of a changing discipline. We reached out to more than 160 students and instructors across the country, and the result is a thoroughly revised edition both in appearance and content.
Puntos continues to provide the solid foundation in communicative language development that has become its hallmark. At the same time, instructor and student feedback have guided the development of the seventh edition in ways that enrich this foundation even more, and also bring to the materials a number of other important and exciting changes.

okay book.......2007-10-05
The internet portion of this book lacks detail of how to follow for self
testing.
puntos de partida.......2007-09-21
the book is alright. I mean its not amazing. its plus side is that it comes with a website that will read you certain things and the answers to all the sections are in the back so you can check your work, but the truly big help comes from haveing a good profesor/a BUT the quia lab and workbook that are an extra 30(+) dollars EACH are the real key to learning this material....as if the book isnt expensive enough already.
Great!.......2007-09-16
I received the product quickly and it was just as described, in perfect condition. Thank you!
Required Textbook.......2007-04-11
I would like to see a spanish book with more explanation between english and spanish. Most books rely on pictures for translation and this book follows the same model. I guess it will serve the purpose, however.
Online Learning Center for Everyone--It's About Time!.......2007-02-19
I've owned this book and the 6th edition; the only difference there was modernizing photos and translations.
I found the book very useful, but I would like to see more transitions as one subject in a chapter changes to the next subject. If you have an instructor who transitions well, you won't have any problems. Going it alone, however, leaves you spending unnecessary time figuring out how to get from A to B. Still, especially if you have the workbook--you NEED the workbook no matter what--you'll learn well.
I'm thrilled to finally be able to get full access to a website with a used book--it's my favorite part of the whole thing!

THE BEST!! .......2007-08-09
WOW. This is an awesome program and an awesome deal.
If you are like me, tired of wasting money on dictionaries, grammar books, travel guides, contrived music programs....
You will not regret buying this. Not only is it inexpensive, and usable for all ages, you will have usable spanish vocabulary immediately.
Practical Phrases For Real Life .......2007-05-12
I'm using this book to help expose my son to Spanish at a young age. It's full of very useful phrases that you just don't learn in Spanish class in high school or college. I have not listened to the cd much, but hope to get more use of it down the road. I would recommend this book for anyone wanting to learn common phrases that you really can use with your children. It's probably best for someone who has had a few years of Spanish study.
Not for beginners or young children.......2007-04-07
It's touted as the fun way to get kids started, but it's a book on tape without even signals after each page. The dialogue was too fast and there's no explanation or instruction, just spanish dialogue printed next to English translation. If your child isn't a fluent reader, forget it.
It'd be good for an older child or adult already learning Spanish who wanted to work on pronunication.
For the daily caregiver.......2007-02-06
This is an excellent tool but it is not the most useful if you are NOT the basic caregiver of the student. It is set up to wake the child, wash him, have breakfast, get dressed, etc. all done with Spanish songs and expressions, as you would do as the parent in English. But as a teacher, you would have to "act out" these scenarios- if you are not the one who oversees his daily activities. I am teaching my grandsons. It was fun for them to pretend they were waking up or dressing to go outside in the hot/cold weather, but it was not frequently repeated (and therefore reinforced) because I am not part of these routines. Accordingly, this is most useful for a parent who wants to introduce Spanish smoothly into a child's daily life, raising them "as if" bilingual.
Not what I expected.......2007-01-31
The "songs" are not really songs. It is more like a book on tape. The students can't sing along. It would be nice to have to read to a child one-on-one, but not for group singing and playing.

This highly successful program offers a flexible, concise introduction to grammar and communication for students and professionals seeking a working knowledge of the Spanish language. Designed for one- or two-semester courses in Introductory Spanish, Basic Spanish Grammar offers a wealth of features and components that also make it ideal for college extension courses, adult and continuing education courses, and Spanish courses for professionals or special purposes. In six correlated manuals, students apply the structures presented in Basic Spanish Grammar to practical contexts and develop vocabulary for specific purposes. A wide array of supplements enhances the program, including corresponding audio programs for each manual, a comprehensive testing program, and tutorial software for additional practice of grammar and vocabulary.
CAREER MANUALS
Note: These features are shared by all seven career manuals.
- Each of the manuals focuses on practical vocabulary for career-related situations and is accompanied by its own audio program.
- Each lesson of the manuals features realistic dialogues, personalized questions, situational role plays, and realia-based activities and corresponds grammatically with those in Basic Spanish Grammar. Lessons of Getting Along in Spanish and Spanish for Communication correlate thematically, grammatically, and lexically with those of Basic Spanish Grammar.

Customer Reviews:
Very good and educational.......2007-04-18
This is a very good book. We used it in our large organization during our Spanish classes and the book was well received.
Good basic Spanish book.......2006-03-27
This books is a good book, but it's not a great book. The way the author chose to organize the book doesn't make sense. Some basic things that we should learn first are left until later, such as family and the names of each family member (ie. madre, padre, nino, nina, hermano, etc.). The book also has all these exercises that asks us questions and asks us to ask questions, but didn't really teach us how to ask questions. We doesn't get a formal introduction on how to use words like "Quien", "Donde", "Que", etc.
Positives of this book include: Vocabulary that is used in each chapter is usually listed in the beginning of each chapter, good and clear explanations of the grammar it does cover, and lots of exercises for practical practice.
Another quirk of this book is that it's written as if someone who's Espanol (Spain-ish) wrote it for an audience dealing with Mexicans. So, it would use vocabulary and tell us "cultural notes" that are not how Mexicans speak or write. My Spanish teacher has to tell us from time to time that certain vocabulary words are not used in Mexico and will give us the words that are used regularly. I was especially puzzled when the author put in a food menu with all the prices, dollars and cents, separated by a comma instead of a period.
Outside of a few quirks, the clarity and ease of understanding make this a good book for those learning Spanish for the first time or want a review if you haven't taken Spanish in a while. I would recommend this book.
Excellent Tool for Continuing Spanish Education.......2006-03-23
This book is very easy to work with and gives the reader the opportunity to pace themselves at their Spanish study. Exercises are thourough and answers are provied in the back of the book for those studying at home or for lesiure.
I only wish I had been able to acquire the most recent edition of the book.
A Teacher's Dream.......2005-11-30
I got this book as part of an adult education course I was teaching at a community college and, after having studied Spanish for years, this is the best text I have seen... period. It has all the basics covered, and covered well. It is thorough and concise. It does not go into a lot of unnecessary material, but sticks to what is necessary to communicate well. It consistently reinforces previous lessons and packs a tremendous amount of learning and exercise into a small amount of homework. The examples chosen are easily digested and make teaching wonderful. My students gave rave reviews of the material and I cannot recommmend it highly enough. As will all language texts, it is the student's responsibility to pack in the vocabulary on their own, but the base grammar is all here and extremely well presented. I would take an old edition of this book over any other new texts available. These are the best.
An excellent place to begin.......2001-04-16
Basic Spanish Grammar is an excellent starting point for one who wants to begin learning the spanish language, or is in need of a refresher course. I recently enrolled in a conversational spanish course and this book was one of the two texts used in class.
All of the exercises contained within the book are written in a clear manner which makes them easy to understand. Basic concepts which I hadn't thought of in about 15 years since my last spanish class came back very quickly and I was able to expand upon my previous knowledge at a much quicker pace than I would have thought possible.
The vocabulary is introduced in a logical manner, with examples that show just how they would be used in everyday speech. The sections dealing with the gender of words, plural forms, and definite and indefinite articles is very helpful for one who hasn't been previously introduced to the concepts.
I highly recommend this book to anybody who wishes to learn the language. Beginning students will find the book very informative, especially when combined with the pronunciation tapes or CD's.

Customer Reviews:
Terrible book!!.......2007-10-11
It must be the worst beginning Spanish language book out there. Not well organized, bombards students with complex grammar constructions and useless vocabulary. This textbook is a true nightmare to work with, to say the least. The workbook and audio that accompany the textbook are ridiculously unrelated. In turn, discouraging and confusing students. Tú dirás means 'you will say'...Indeed, I will say,-- Terrible textbook!
Book Description
Through six editions, ¿Cómo se dice...? has successfully prepared and motivated over one million students to continue their study of Spanish. This introductory Spanish program remains one of the best-selling texts available today because it is flexible, easy to use, and adaptable to any teaching style. The program features a balanced, four-skills approach that stresses communicative competency and cultural awareness as well as the mastery of language structures.
To better accommodate both two- and three-semester or quarter courses, the scope and sequence of the Seventh Edition contains 18 lessons. Students in a two-semester course master the preterit by the end of the first semester (Lecciones 1-9) Those in a 3-semester course master the present tense by the end of the first semester (Lecciones 1-6) and the past tenses by the end of the second semester (Lecciones 7-12). In addition, basic formal commands are introduced earlier (presented via lexical entries in Lecciones 2, 5, 6, 8, and 11).
- Presentations of high-frequency, meaningful vocabulary, basic Spanish sounds, and words and expressions that are challenging for English speakers, as well as clear and succinct grammar explanations provide students with a solid foundation for building communication skills.
- Student learning and independent study is supported through ample examples, varied practice, and opportunities for self-assessment.
- A balance of four-skills practiceprogressing from controlled to more open-endedoffers students the opportunity to actively use the language while reinforcing learning and strengthening communication skills.
- Through various mediaincluding realia, readings, photo essays, video, and the Internetstudents broaden their knowledge of the geography, history, and cultures of the Spanish-speaking world. Cross-cultural comparisons help students develop cultural understanding.
- The ¿Cómo se dice...? Multimedia CD-ROM 3.0 is an interactive program featuring short clips from the video with accompanying transcripts and links to a bilingual glossary. The clips are supported by a variety of comprehension and interpretation activities to help students hone their listening skills. Language practice exercises corresponding to the grammar points presented in the student text are also included on this CD-ROM. The exercises contain links to a grammar reference to help students who need additional review/reinforcement of grammatical concepts.
- Completely revised, the ¿Cómo se dice...? Web Site includes task-based activities, ACE self-testing for each lesson with audio and video clips and automatic feedback, and electronic flashcards for additional practice of vocabulary and verb conjugations. A comprehensive, password-protected guide assists instructors and TAs with the integration of the various multimedia components. Supplemental readings for Lessons 13-18 are available to download for courses in which the instructor wishes to extend the reading skills development offered in the text.
- The two-hour video provides three distinct types of footage: unrehearsed interviews with native speakers from around the Spanish-speaking world, photo essays of everyday life, and authentic footage from Hispanic countries.
- The Opening Passage, featured at the beginning of each lesson, introduces vocabulary and structures in context in new and varied formats including personal vignettes, informal correspondence, and dialogues accompanied by sample realia. Each passage is followed by ¡Conversemos! comprehension questions that provide immediate reinforcement.
- ¿Lo sabía Ud.? culture notes, written in simple Spanish, convey information on cultural themes or points mentioned in the lesson dialogue.
- Pronunciación sections, appearing in Lecciones 1-18, contain pronunciation and linking exercises designed to acquaint students with the basic Spanish sounds, with sounds, words and expressions that are challenging for English speakers, and with natural speech.
- The Estructuras section presents an average of four or five clear and succinct grammar points in English, with practical examples that can be consulted for independent study and reference. Each structure is immediately followed by Práctica exercises that range from controlled drills to open-ended activities.
- Contemporary ¡Vamos a leer! selections promote reading skills.
- Teleinforme sections following even-numbered lessons reinforce the content of the photo essays and authentic footage of the ¿Cómo se dice...? Video and offer a sequence of pre-viewing, post-viewing, and expansion activities.
- Así somos sections following odd-numbered lessons provide viewing activities with improved accessibility for the unrehearsed interviews in the ¿Cómo se dice...? Video.
- The Testing Program includes nine culture tests correlated to the Panorama hispánico sections.
- For instructors' convenience, icons and annotations in the Instructor's Annotated Edition refer to additional related activities in the Instructor's Activities Manual.

A Student View: Good textbook, Boring Workbk and Lab Manual.......2000-09-16
It is a very compact course for beginners, and is not intended for self-study. A good thing is that you will be equipped with lots of vocabularies after the course, and the grammer point is clear. A bad thing is that you will still confused how to conjugate peterit, imperfect, subjuctive, conditional, future, imperfect subjuctive etc after the course, because all of these grammers are taught in 6 or 7 chapters. Anyway, the textbook worths five stars because I feel I learnt a lot about Spanish in 8 months. It is a very demanding course if you don't have foundation of any Latin-based language.
The Workbook and Lab Manual uh... very very boring. It is a typical workbook, and is not interactive. I have tried another Lab Manual, like "Puntos de Partida" (if I spell it right) and found that it is much more interesting and interactive. There are more exercises in "Puntos" lab Manual than "Como" Lab Manual. And basically a large part of "Como" Lab Manual is to follow the recordings and read out the texts in the textbook. And actually these recordings are the same as those provided in the student cassette. (I feel cheated!)
Overall, the textbook is good but the Workbook and Lab Manual is not satisfactory.
Great start!.......2000-06-27
I have used COMO SE DICE as a text book to teach Spanish in a military college. COMO SE DICE has concise, clear explanations for every Grammar subject, as well as excellent exercises for the students to practice. Written by two Latin American professors and one Spanish professor, useful expressions and vocabulary are both, from the old "Motherland", and the new Hispanic world. I highly recommend it.

Customer Reviews:
Comprehensive.......2003-12-09
This is the most comprehensive foreign language book I've seen. It's simple, a 6th grader could teach themselves Spanish with this book. Open it, read it, and memorize it. I had a terrible time with French and was not looking foward to learning Spanish, but I picked it up immediately as I went along with this book. When the semester was over, I spent the summer reading the rest of it at my leisure. As far as the other reviews go, I'm not sure what the problem was. It couldn't be explained any more clearly, perhaps they are moving too fast? Take a day for each page or something, whatever works. If you're not picking it up, it may be your study techniques and not the book. If you want extra practice, get the workbook. Both the workbook and the textbook have the answers to every practice exercise (of which there are an adequate amount) in the back of the book. Maybe the previous reviewers were unaware?
Excellent Text.......2003-07-05
Contrary to other reviews I find this textbook excellent. The chapters lead the student to learn Spanish with a minimal effort at a natural, comfortable pace. Recommended for beginners!
If you are trying to teach yourself ...........2003-02-26
then this book is NOT for you. I tried to teach myself Spanish (I didn't know any) and this book just did not work out because of its poor construction. The concepts are not clearly described and all too often I found myself asking why is this grammar like this or what is the difference between the different tenses. The examples are not very helpful either.
However, I took a private introductory class and then returned to this book. Here, the book has provided some value with its vocabulary which is grouped by themes (festivals, family, etc). So the book has some value for a beginner if you are also receiving extensive instruction from another source.
A poor excuse for a learning tool........2002-12-30
This book is touted as a beginners volume yet it fails to perform as specified. The contents are poorly written and few examples are given to help in the learning process. To further complicate the learning of a new language, Puntos de partida provides very little explanations and direction to ensure sufficient comprehension and understanding of the Spanish language. Unfortunantly, this review can speak for most Spanish text books on the market as my Universities Spanish program has realized. Puntos de partida will not help the beginner to learn Spanish. It will deter the beginner to seek further understanding and learning of the Spanish language. This is unfortunate.
boring.......1999-12-02
Could use some deals of interest in writing this book. Very boring and put's you to sleep

Customer Reviews:
A great workbook.......2001-04-16
For those who wish to work on their spanish skills in preparation for travel, this workbook has a number of useful exercises. Chapters within the book are broken down so that each deals with a certain aspect, such as telephone calls, family, dining at a restaurant, and shopping.
The format of the book is helful for the independent learner, but might not be as useful for one who doesn't have the motivation to continue studying on their own. As with any language, you learn best by using it in in everyday speech, and unless you have a partner to study with, or are taking a spanish course of some sort, the book might have limited uses.
I haven't used the companion CD's which cover pronunciation and allow you to get the ear training done, but would assume that they are as good as the ones which are a part of the Basic Spanish Grammar book, also by Ana C. Jarvis. If this book is used with Basic Spanish Grammar, you should have no problem acquiring the basic knowledge which will set you well on your way to becoming a fluent speaker of spanish. Or at least it'll ensure that you'll know enough to get along...
