5 out of 5 stars Correction.......2007-01-16

I think most of what has been said is already pretty relevant. But to correct one flaw, someone mistakenly cited this Manwha (It's Korean made, manga is for Japanese) as being based on the Ragnarok Online MMORPG. This is incorrect, the manga is adapted from the original story.

This happened to be my first manga and I can't reccomend it enough. It blends Norse Mythology nicely with anime themes and takes some traditional Character Concepts and works to break the molds they're set in.

Unfortunately, after the 10 Graphic Novel release Lee has since been on a hiatus to help use his notes and information to develop on the MMORPG, the anime series adapted from said RPG and even a sequel MMORPG. If Lee ever gets back to working on this series, it will truly become something great.

5 out of 5 stars Manga at its finest.......2005-09-07

This is an action packed anime which also had a very strong background story which deals with Norse Mythology. Anyone interested in Norse Mythology and seeing such a mythology play out in the Japanese anime style should definitely check this book out.

An avid manga reader and anime fan I've been deeply disappointed lately by animes and mangas which were ridden with senseless violence and poor character creation - this anime is something truly special though, I assure you and one thing is for sure: I'm hooked on Ragnarok! For those of you who like Japanese animation, Ragnarok features some of the prettiest artwork for the fantasy/action manga genre I've seen yet.

Fun stuff, give it a read!

3 out of 5 stars Wizard needs food badly..........2004-05-11

Ragnarok is kinda-sorta based on the Korean MMORPG of the same name. This would certainly explain why the cast sounds just like the character line-up for a FF game... The magic user who is a princess, the capricious thief, the steely-eyed assassin, and of course the rugged hero who has the power to save the world from the ENCROACHING DARKNESS (tm)...

To put it mildly, the story is pretty fluffy (Berserk this aint...) But it's still a fun read with some really slick art. If you're looking for a light RPG-esque comic fix then give Ragnarok a spin.

4 out of 5 stars THIS IS NOT THOR.......2004-05-07

1000 years ago, the God Balder was killed fighting against the goddess Freya. Now he has been resurrected as the mortal named Chaos, living in the city of Fayon. He is suffering from amnesia and is therefore ignorant of his past and of the forces that are hunting him. He is spending his time being the mentor of the princess of the city, a reckless but potentially powerful cleric named Iris Irine. Freya is seeking the lands with her valkyries in order to destroy him. The valkyrie in charge of the hunt is Sara Irine, who just happens to have a personal grievance against Fayon. Chaos' only hope is if Fenris Fenrir, the reincarnated wolf god can find him before Freya and jog his memory. Chaos and Iris are also befriended by a Lara Croft treasure hunter type named Lidia who is really just a common thief who tags along with them looking for opportunities to steal any magic item she can. There is also the mysterious Skurai, an cursed outlaw whose living sword promises to free him from his bondage if he kills a certain someone in Fayon.

This is a great manga. All of the characters are well drawn and the story smacks of an epic. It's a great setup for volume 2 in which this panorama of characters are going to come into conflict once they all reach the city.

5 out of 5 stars Norse myth manga rocks!.......2004-04-26

Ragnarok is one of the greatest mangas I ever have read! In Norse mythology, Ragnarok is the end of the world. This series is a great insight on Norse mythology. In it, Fenris (like Fenrir, an offspring of Loki in wolf form, that helped cause Ragnarok) is trying to find Baldur's sword. You also meet Chaos and Iris. Chaos is teaching Iris to be more powerful. Eventually (but not in vol. 1), Iris and Chaos meet Fenris, and try to prevent Ragnarok.

2 out of 5 stars YOU THINK I'M A CLOWN? .......2005-10-07

After the epic and city destroying battles of the first 7 volumes, I guess Myung-Jin Lee wanted to take things in another direction. Not only does Volume 8 radically redesign all of the major characters hair and costumes, it also injects a lot more humor, in fact TOO MUCH humor, and even throws in a cliched fan service bathing scene with Fenris and Iris. And Loki's caption bubbles are now done in squares, as if to indicate his lack of humanity? Who knows. And the cap-off rip-off from Inuyasha is that our heroes must collect all of the shards of Ymir's heart before the forces of evil, lest the whole world be remade in their image. So they book flight to Schwarzwaard, to ask a sage how to find the shards. What better way to get there than to board a blimp piloted by walking talking moose? I mean, come on, can we put a cap on the goofiness. And wait till you see the aerial attack of the Gremlins!

If this is the new direction and look that the rest of the series is going to take, then you can count me out. You have new characters running about putting everyone in danger, yet having no connection with the plot as of yet. The humor and pitiful attempts at fan service parody fell flat on their face. You just can't go from life and death situations and then in the next panel to super-deformed characters without either undercutting the humor or the drama. Hopefully Volume 9 will return to the quality of the previous books.

5 out of 5 stars Wicked Awesome.......2004-04-19

This has got to be the best book in the series, period. I can't say anything, cause that would be telling, but a surprising coupe is hinted at and I love the pairing and have stood by it since first reading it. Humpr, drama, and intrigue are all masterfully woven in this volume of Ragnarok. Buy it today.

4 out of 5 stars AFTERMATH.......2005-07-25

At the end of Volume 2, all of the main characters of Ragnarok were involved in a battle royale in the city of Fayon, which ended when Chaos unconsciously summoned the dragon Nidhogg. Chaos and his friends wake up far from the city, with the understanding that they are the only survivors of Fayon. Chaos receives a visitation from the spirit of his dead mother, the goddess Frigg, telling him to find "the one who is both human...and not!" if he wants to save the world. Meanwhile, Loki and his team of Guild Assassins battle against a king who wants to bring an evil demon back into the world, even at the cost of innocent children. Unknown to Loki, Skurai has been transported by Odin's Beholders to the home of the Guild, to let his blade, Talatsu, take its fill of blood.

While the action gets a little too cluttered at times, the cast of characters more than makes up for that. These are real people having to make choices and paying for past misdeeds. Great read.
One of the best in the action genre, without sacrificing seriousness and character.

5 out of 5 stars A good read, but slightly confusing.......2004-10-14

For those who have read this volume of 'The Mythical Detective Loki Raganarok' (or Matantei Loki Ragnarok as I prefer to call it, in reference to its Japanese title), you may find yourself scratching your head in puzzlement at the happenings and the names (Odin, Norns, Ragnarok, etc.). Don't feel as if you're the only one who this has happened to, it happened to me. However, I hope that after reading what I have to say, you will find yourself slightly less confused.
First of all, this series is based loosly on Norse mythology, so it helps if you have at least some previous knowledge of these myths, though it shouldn't be too hard to pick up as you read the manga (Odin is the leader of the Gods, Norns are like the goddesses of fate, and Ragnarok is the final battle between the gods and the giants which is the cause behind the end of the world).
However, what new readers may find most confusing is how the story progresses (who the heck are all these people? what are they talking about? how do they seem to know each other so well?). There is a perfectly good reason behind this...simply put this is not the first volume of the series. There is a whole wealth of 7 previous volumes before this current one. Now you are probably asking why is this particular volume labeled as volume one? The reason is because midway through the story line, the publishers switched, and with the switch of publishers the volume number got reset (as well as a slight name change extension). Don't believe me? Try searching for AISN# 4901926535. That's the original first volume, however it sadly appears that it only is available in its original japanese form, as are the other 6 (if anyone knows different, by all means, please correct me).
However, don't be discouraged. If it helps any, ADV is currently releasing the anime version of Mythical Detective Loki Ragnarok (which covers the original 7 volumes of the manga). I do recommend seeing the anime, as it does help in understanding the manga, but I don't feel it is completly necessary, as the manga is interesting in itself (just don't be surprised if you feel slow to comprehend all the information).
Hope I was able to help and happy reading to you all.

4 out of 5 stars LAST BATTLES.......2005-09-05

As Volume 7 opens, Fenris and Iris are still battling against Bijou, a powerful witch trying to steal Ymir's Heart, and losing! Meanwhile, Chaos and Loki are facing off against Himmelmez and her undead hordes aboard her floating fortress. She has enlisted the aid of Matthew, the dead best friend of Chaos from Fayon, who is now being controlled by her sorcery. Will Chaos be able to destroy his already dead friend, or will Himmelmez win the battle? And where does Sara Irine's loyalties lie? Does she have her own agenda which will disrupt the plans of all involved?

Myung-Jin Lee continues his epic action fantasy series with cluttered art and strong plot which might overwhelm or confuse at times. You'll never be bored reading Ragnarok. Good series.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars fAYON IS THE PLACE TO BE.......2005-07-18

In volume 2 of Ragnarok, all of the characters introduced in the first volume come into conflict in the city of Fayon, ruled over by Iris Irine's father. Shortly after returning from hunting face worms, and with Lidia "Expert Treasure Hunter" in tow, our heroes are faced with an awful attack. Sara Irine the valkyrie, has come to Fayon seeking Balder, accompanied by a contingent of gigantic frost giants, has appeared and has vowed to lay waste to the city. Besides finding Balder, she has her own agenda to take revenge on the king, who reveals a unknown secret to Iris. Meanwhile, Fenris Fenrir has shown up, babbling to a flabbergasted Chaos that he is the god Balder reincarnated. And Skurai, the cursed prosecutor has also come to the city, goaded on by Odin's observers who promised that the blood that will lift his curse will be found there. As this battle begins to rage, in another city, the assassin Loki leads a band of his comrades in an effort against the forces of a king who is involved in the disappearance of hundreds, if not thousands, of children.

This second volume of Ragnarok was heavy on the action. What I like about it is the plentiful variety of characters. This makes its fantasy element really shine. They're really only a bit off from being superheroes. Lee's art is great at showing all facets of drama, from tragedy to slapstick comedy. Ragnarok is a Korean work that is very entertaining and should appeal to fans of Japanese and American comics.

4 out of 5 stars Awful plot, but some awesome action.......2004-04-21

The thing you have to understand about this series is that it's no so much about the plot as it is about the action. This Manhwa has some of the most intense battles I've ever seen in comic form.
Ignore the fact that it's supposed to be based off Norse mythology though, because it's not very good in that respect. I'm really into Norse mythology and I was disappointed how none of the characters that they use are actually the way they are in Norse Mythology.
The world is in a fantasy setting, and honestly the plot is no different from what you would see in your typical RPG. (Which I have played many of.)

The action is what this Manhwa's about. Though in terms of action it doesn't get really good until Book 3 when Loki appears. (my favorite character.) Before that I was wondering why I was even reading the series.
And then once it gets to Book 4 it barely lets up on the action until the end of Book 7. In Book 8 it slowed down a little and I once again began to wonder why I was reading it, but by volume 9 the action picked up again and I've read through 10 now and it still shows no sign of letting up.

Even though the plot isn't that great there are still some characters I couldn't help but like (Which happens to me a lot in RPG's.) Such as Lydia, a thief who calls herself a treasure Hunter.
Or the Sorceress Fenris Fenrir.(I really like her though it's hard to say why.)
And lastly the Assassin Loki who is just a TOTAL badass.

But then there are a few caracters that just totally annoy the heck out of me. They are meant be funny but they're are just annoying. The prime example of that is Iris Irine. She is always acting like a little kid (Especially around Chaos.) except when she's fighting, then she's really cool. And I know it's meant to be funny but all it does is annoy the heck out me.
Though in Book 8 some characters appeared that I think may be even more annoying than her. And I very much dread to seeing them again.

If your looking for some serious action, then you should check this one out, but if you're expecting a deep plot then stay away from it.

5 out of 5 stars "THE BEST".......2003-12-21

ON my opinion this is by far the best of all the Ragnarok series. Of course this is the first one that I ever bought but now I almost have them all and this one is still my favorite. The art work is unmatchable and the story is really heart touching.

The whole plot was just amazing. And I just love how they designed their outfits."THE BOMB" Well anywayz moving on.
When I read the part of Sara Irine story I was really confused at first on what was going on. Then I got to the end where i really understood it and the meaning just made me want to break down in tears. Or probably knock some brains into her father. I mean I don't want to spoil anything but at first they seem so happy together. How could he just slaughter his wife and child like that. Things like this really does get to you.
Plus what I don't get in the first place is why they had to sacrifice them to begin with. (Sara and her mother were so pretty and her father looked like he really loved them)I mean couldn't he just have to daughters and where does Iris come in on all this...

All in all I would highly recommend this book to all readers out there and especially to all you anime fans. ENJOY :)...

5 out of 5 stars "This is a great series and it has a promising future".......2002-11-03

- This is one of the better grphic novels that I have ever read I really hope more people could get a chance to read it, the Ragnarok series has definetly been hiding in the shadows lateley but this is a book that deservs more attention.
All of the characters look very realistic on a manga scale. I myself have read many graphic novels in my lifetime and this is in the range of the top five graphic novels.
The storyline is based on a girl named Iris Irine she is the dughter of a powerful man by the name of Lord Irine. Lord Irine's eldest daughter was to be sacrificed 12 years ago but things didnt go as planned. Iris escaped and was adopted to an army. Now in this book Lord Irine's daughter is back "and will feel her vengeance".

This is all I will tell you for right now but you will have to purchase this book to find out the rest.

5 out of 5 stars Ragnarok #2 kicks butt!.......2002-07-30

The second manwa in the series is just as good if not better than the first. The art style is amazing. Alright enough about how great the manwa is, let me tell you what to expect. Don't worry I'm not going to spoil anything. Well if I do please don't be mad. So the plot thickens in the second volume. You are introduced to shocking new secrets about a couple of the characters. This is also were the real fighting starts. And don't worry if you have a faint stomach the fighting scenes don't get very gory. In Ragnarok 2 you'll also be introduced to Loki and his group of assasins. They are mysterious and not much is revealed about them. They are sure to play some important part in future. So I really can't think of much else to write because I really don't want to ruin anything for anyone. Hope this was helpful. I really recommend this to anyone who enjoys manga or anime.

4 out of 5 stars THE WRONG SUSPECT.......2005-08-03

Told by his mother Frigg to search for the one who is "human but not human", Chaos, Fenris, and Iris arrive in the capital of Prontera, with no idea who they are seeking. After Skurai kills everyone at the assassins guild with the help of Odin's Beholders, a frame-up is perpetrated, making Loki think that Chaos has killed the order that keeps Midgard in balance. Swearing revenge, Loki sets out to kill Chaos, and Skurai is not far behind in seeking out a clash that will surely entail powerful blood for his cursed sword.

Ragnarok brings a lot of action to the table, but along with it, the characters and plot are engaging enough to provide a good entertainment for fantasy fans. While this series seems to borrow ideas from other works, whether it be Asgardian legends or Elric, or Dungeons and Dragons, it works. Lee's action sequences could be done much better because he uses so many lines to convey motion that it usually obscures the action, making you have to guess what happened sometimes. But all together this is an above average comic for readers that enjoy action and epic fantasy storylines.

5 out of 5 stars Bringing it to the max.......2003-08-14

I must say that the pacing for books 2 and 3 were a little slow. But Book 4 changes all that. The action in this volune was superb. Actually, not superb because there isn't a high enough word that can accurately describe the fight scenes. I don't think I have seen a better action sequence in manwha or manga.

I'm use to seeing languages being translated and I know that you'll have to lose something when switching between langauges although I never found the translation to be confusing or weird.

(P.S. Myung-Jin Lee has Already helped in the making of the Game Ragnarok... Although it just became P2P ( Pay to Play )It is Very good...

5 out of 5 stars Excellent manwha series.......2003-01-12

A great series with an engaging story and lots of action. My only gripe is that the translator (Richard Knaak) did a mediocre job of translating some text and phrases in certain scenes that just don't fit. The "sound-fx" text also was pretty bad. I.E. Hop, hop, hop...what is that?

Also, I remember reading an earlier preview from someone saying that this was quote "...an awesome manga..." technically it's a Korean comic in which they call it manwha in their language. Manga is comic for Japanese.

5 out of 5 stars Ragnarok Forever!.......2002-12-01

This is definitly an awesome manga! The plot is extremely original, you can easily bond with the characters, and the art is simply magnificent! Myung-jin Lee has really done a wonderful job, and I'm sure he'll continue to do so throughout the series. For all those who love manga, I highly recommend Ragnarok.

4 out of 5 stars ALL OR NOTHING.......2005-09-01

The city of Prontera continues to be attacked by the flying fortress of Himmelmez, the queen of the valkyries, and servant of Freya. Her goal is to seize the Heart of Ymir, which will allow her to reshape Midgard however she wishes! Chaos and Loki team up to fight the legions of undead creatures she has awakened from death, but their battle is pointless if they cannot reach Himmelmez herself. Meanwhile, Fenris and Iris are engaged in a life or death struggle to keep the Heart from being taken by Bijou, a powerful witch who seems to have been sewn together from corpses.

Ragnarok is a fast moving comic from Korea that never lets go of the action, even though Lee's art is at times hard to follow. He is inventive and a master of evolving plot. All of the characters seem real, even the evildoers. Even though this is Volume 6, you still feel as though there is a whole universe out there to explore in later installments. Good book!

I would also recommend the anime Twelve Kingdoms, Escaflowne, and there's even an online Ragnarok game that allows you to further explore the world that we see in the manwha.

4 out of 5 stars THREE PROBLEMS AT ONCE.......2005-12-06

Our heroes are trapped in the city of Geffen as all travel is banned during the "Festival of Magic", a contest in which sorcerors, sorceresses, clerics, magicians, and anyone else with magical powers square off against one another in a tournament to see who reigns supreme. In order to get passage out of the city for her and her friends, Fenris enters the battle. Meanwhile, Lidia believes she might have finally found the secret entrance to Alfheim, the lost land of the Elves, where a legendary treasure is purported to reside. But there's a strange woman archer trying to block her way. And Chaos has to deal with the swordsman Skurai who is holding Iris hostage in the city library.

Volume 9 of Ragnarok makes up for a lackluster Volume 8. That volume saw a more humorous bent and some radical changes in costume for all the major characters that were reminescent of a 1970's glam-rock band. But once I became used to these changes, the series has gone back to its roots. Lots of action, dashes of unexcessive humor and a fast-paced drawing style. While that style can sometimes make it difficult to make sense of fighting panels, it also implies motion. The characters are interesting and rich. All in all, a fine addition to the series.

3 out of 5 stars A letdown.......2004-04-19

I was dissapointed after reading this one. I'm tempted to say I hate it, especially in comparison to number eight. Way too much of Skurai for my taste, and a lot of it brings out some of the more annoying traits in a lot of the charecters. I hope number ten is better because number nine was just plain mediocre. Though Fenris has some good moments in the begining of the book hehe ^_^

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars THREE BATTLES.......2006-03-06

Myung-Jin Lee is juggling quite a few storylines in this, the 10th and last volume of Ragnarok available here in the States (it's been on hiatus for about two years now). The sword possessed Skurai has taken Iris hostage to bring about a confrontation with Chaos. Even as they battle Iris' life is slipping away. Ignorant of their plight, Fenris continues battling in a magic-user tournament in order to secure passage out of the city of Geffen. Meanwhile, Loki, Lidia the thief, and a strange elven maiden have been sucked into the secret homeland of the elves, Alfheim, where they must confront not only the extememly powerful viceroy of the city, but his hired assassin, who is as powerful as Loki!

The nagging thought you have as you read this is that no matter how good this volume is, there will be no continuation of it for the forseeable future. Just focusing on this volume of Ragnarok, Lee's art is pretty much the usual, very good except in the action sequences where it is hard to make out what exactly is happening at times. The story, like Star Wars, seems like an amalgamation of fantasy archetypes instead of bursting with its own originality. But there's nothing wrong with that. For what it is, action-packed fantasy, it works decently.

I would recommend the Star Wars and Lord of the Rings films if you like this series. Also, the Scrapped Princess anime and manga.

3 out of 5 stars A little rushed?.......2004-07-16

Without giving away any major spoilers, parts of this book really disappointed me. I feel that the plot overall seems a little rushed - events happen without much description or detail. The ending is very vague, with no preview of the cover for the next book. And who knows when we'll see the next Ragnarok - there's no release date from tokyopop!

5 out of 5 stars Ragnarok again.......2004-07-05

One of my favorite mangas the worst thing about Ragnarok is waiting for the next one, and wondering if tokyopop is going to release more of them after 10 (nothing on there site about 11+, and i know it goes higher then that) all in all worth your time and money.
