Book Description

Four years after training with the old warrior he calls Socrates, and in spite of all he has learned, Dan Millman confronts personal failure and growing frustrations. Disillusioned with his life, unable to bridge the gap between knowing and doing, he sets out on a worldwide quest to rediscover his sense of purpose and source of inspiration. A buried memory sends him on a search for a woman shaman deep in a Hawaiian rain forest. She is the gateway to all his hopes and his fears — and only she can prepare him for what is to come. In worlds of shadow and light, he encounters inner tests, mortal challenges, disturbing revelations, and memorable characters in the most crucial quest of his life. This is the sacred journey we all share, says Millman, the journey to the light that shines at the heart of all our lives.

5 out of 5 stars Socrates. story is Millman's best work!.......2007-09-13

I saw the movie first and THEN bought the books. I liked all of his books but this was by far my favorite-especially with the surprise ending. The former Olympian, Dan Millman, has an interesting way of blending truth and fantasy in his auto-biographical novels so that you don't know where the reality ends but this book is delightfully inspiring and hard to put down. His characters are so engaging that you almost feel as if you know them personally instead of second hand through his words. And as he heals himself you find strength gathering deep in your core. Hemmingway he isn't but can definitely give Dwyer, Chopra, Redfield and Quinn a run for their money.-
It seems like one always finds these types of books at a time one needs them most- but as his grandfather was fond of saying, "Nothing is coincidence."

1 out of 5 stars Love Millman, hated this book........2007-08-24

I have been a Dan Millman for over 20 years. I own almost all of his books, but this was by far the worst. If I had read this one 1st I never would have picked up another book by him.
This book goes too far into the "mystic" and "new age" side of his teachings. It was too far fetched for me. Minor details did not fit with what was written in "The Way of the Peaceful Warrior." One MAJOR thing was that "Joseph" comes back from the dead to make an appearance in this story. Not a vision - Joseph is alive and well and raising a family.
Everything else I have read by Dan, has inspired me to make changes in my life and try to improve, not so with this story.
It does have some insightful thoughts, but they are few and far between.
Finishing it was drudgery. Do yourself a favor, choose another title and let Dan inspire you.

4 out of 5 stars The Sacred Warrior review ~.......2007-08-11

I am currently enjoying the Sacred Journey of the Peaceful Warrior. Although I have not ended the book, it is uplifting and fun reading for early mornings in the hot tub!!! It is somewhat spiritually uplifting and I appreciate that very much. I have other projects in the middle that is why the reading is going a little more slowly but in this way I can enjoy it a little more as well. Thank you for this review.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent follow-up to Peaceful Warrior.......2007-05-21

I think what intrigues me most about Millman's work is the psuedosemi-autobiographical nature of the the stories he tells. The anecdotes that didn't actually happen drive home a very powerful point, and the anecdotes that did actually happen are just as amazing and world-view altering as the fiction.

In Sacred Journey, Millman shares with his readers another of his teachers on his path through life. Saturated with the wit, inspiration, and one-liners that so well established themselves in Peaceful Warrior, this book is expands upon his quest to enlightenment by focusing on the instructions of a wise Kahuna woman.

I highly recommend this book to those interested in learning about the journey of this peaceful warrior--one of many possible paths.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent story!.......2007-01-10

This book really should only be read after you have read Way of the Peaceful Warrior. This one takes place sort of in the middle of the other. It states in the preface the exact page number where you could actually put the other book down, read this one, and then pick the other back up again and continue on. But, it is a great story and I highly recommend it!

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

"

In nineteenth-century Tsarist Russia an orphaned child born of Jewish and Cossack blood grows up in a land of wealthy aristocrats, struggling peasants, and growing discontent. Sent to an elite military academy at the tender age of four, Sergei Ivanov (Socrates) comes of age training to protect a way of life he doesn't understand. When a sudden death forces Sergei to flee, he escapes into the wilderness.

With nothing to cling to but a memory of his grandfather and the promise of a gift buried near St. Petersburg, Sergei journeys across a harsh land to seek his place in the world. The adventure that unfolds is not about the revolutions of history, but about the revolution in one man's heart. A stirring story of tragedy and triumph emerges as Sergei encounters mentors and masters who reveal secrets about the arts of war and, ultimately, the path to peace. From the heights of love to the depths of despair, from the threat of a mortal enemy to the search for a child he has never met, Sergei Ivanov's odyssey unlocks hidden wisdom at the heart of life. He could never have imagined that from the moment of his birth he was destined to become the peaceful warrior who would change the lives of millions worldwide.

AWESOME!!!

The story was amazingly told and so enjoyable to read. I could hardly put the book down. Not only was the story a pleasure to read I found myself constantly reflecting on my own life. The possibility for real life learning is found inside an entertaining and enjoyable story, I wish all of my college text books had been written so. :)

5 out of 5 stars incredible close to an exceptional trilogy.......2007-06-07

This book is extremely compelling, you'll be in suspense most of the time and it will all come to one final incredible conclusion that'll blow your mind.

5 out of 5 stars A spiritual reading.......2007-03-09

This book was very moving in its spiritual and emotional growth experience that Socrates goes through. I think that anyone who has had even one tenth of the things happen to them that happened to him and can grow and develop like he does is an awesome accomplishment. This book is an excellent story with a moral for any age reader.

5 out of 5 stars The story comes full circle.......2007-02-09

I have been a Dan Millman fan since the late 80's and this book is just as good as his others. Not quite "way of the peaceful warrior" but good never the less. It also completes the story so it makes more sense. The last part of the book describing, I beleive, a true story from Mr Millman's personal life about who socrates was and his influences on him was the best part of the book.

Book Description

First time in paperback, with a new Introduction and final chapter

World affairs expert and intrepid travel journalist Robert D. Kaplan braved the dangers of war-ravaged Afghanistan in the 1980s, living among the mujahidin—the “soldiers of god”—whose unwavering devotion to Islam fueled their mission to oust the formidable Soviet invaders. In Soldiers of God we follow Kaplan’s extraordinary journey and learn how the thwarted Soviet invasion gave rise to the ruthless Taliban and the defining international conflagration of the twenty-first century.

Kaplan returns a decade later and brings to life a lawless frontier. What he reveals is astonishing: teeming refugee camps on the deeply contentious Pakistan-Afghanistan border; a war front that combines primitive fighters with the most technologically advanced weapons known to man; rigorous Islamic indoctrination academies; a land of minefields plagued by drought, fierce tribalism, insurmountable ethnic and religious divisions, an abysmal literacy rate, and legions of war orphans who seek stability in military brotherhood. Traveling alongside Islamic guerrilla fighters, sharing their food, observing their piety in the face of deprivation, and witnessing their determination, Kaplan offers a unique opportunity to increase our understanding of a people and a country that are at the center of world events.

4 out of 5 stars The Many Worlds of Afghanistan.......2007-08-03

I read Soldiers of God at the same time that I read The Bookseller of Kabul (for book club) and found Soldiers to be an enlightening companion read because while Bookseller focused on one family in Kabul, its interpersonal dynamics, and how religion and culture affected its members, Soldiers gave a broader view of various groups and their political and personal dynamics in Afghanistan. Also, both books were written by Western journalists, which gave the books a somewhat similar (though by no means identical) perspective on Afghanistan, although differing in scope.

Specific to Soldiers, I enjoyed Robert Kaplan's story telling (part travelogue, part reportage), his ability to gain access to some very insular groups, and his obvious desire to present them and their goals as accurately as possible. It was compelling reading for me as I knew little about the country, its myriad elements and history.

5 out of 5 stars A first rate book on Afghanistan.......2006-06-10

Kaplan is an American journalist who made several trips into Afghanistan during the time that the Soviet Union had occupied Afghanistan and was intent on turning Afghanistan into a communist country.

In his trips, Kaplan experienced and describes the life common to all mountain peoples, the cruelty and gruesomeness of war especially in its counter-insurgency edition, and the traditions of the different Afghan tribes. He describes the leaders of the resistance, except for the Islamist factions, who are all but ignored, and the various rather eccentric Europeans and Americans who joined their cause.

This book is moving - what else would one expect of a people that was willing to sustain a million fatalities in order to maintain their customs and not be occupied by a foreign power?

To use a colossal understatement, Afghanistan is a very colorful place, nothing at all like American suburbia. Anyone who wants to understand Afghanistan must recognize this fact. The best parts of the book, which alone are worth the price of the book, are the many thumbnail descriptions of the eccentric people and surreal situations that Kaplan found in Afghanistan.

2 out of 5 stars zzzzzz..........2006-04-29

As a college student, I am required certain books for my history class. The firsthand account books I have read this semester have been very enjoyable (Kaffir Boy & Son of the Revolution). However, even though Soldiers of God is a firsthand account of Robert Kaplan traveling in Afghanistan & Pakistan during the Soviet invasion & occupation, it was one of the most boring books I have ever read. I could barely read 3 pages without beginning to doze off. The action is limited and sporadic and the commentary is less than stellar. If you are looking for another Kaffir Boy this book is not the one to pick.

4 out of 5 stars Very Good.......2005-09-10

Great book about the Russian-Afghan War and preread to Taliban by Ahmed Rashid. Very good read for anyone wanting to know about Central Asian/Afghan history and Afghan/Pakistani relations of recent years.

5 out of 5 stars A war forgotten and rediscovered.......2005-09-05

September 11 offered an obvious answer to why Afghanistan mattered, and several books have examined the interaction between the Soviet war in Afghanistan and the rise of militant Islam. Last year, Steve Coll was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for his book "Ghost Wars," a twenty-year history of America in Afghanistan. But save the exception of Taliban published by Ahmed Rashid, Afghanistan was consistently conspicuously absent from the Western booklist.

When Robert Kaplan first published this book, in 1990, he meant to shed light into a war whose geopolitical importance was inversely related to its attention in the press. "Soldiers of God" is a typical Kaplan book that interweaves the author's first-hand account of the region with a deep interest in understanding its history and a solemn sense of realism that pervades the narrative.

In telling his story, Mr. Kaplan begins with an introductory chapter on the war's barbarity-particularly the impact that Soviet mines had on the war and the country's landscape. He then looks at Peshawar, the Pakistani city that acted as the war's staging room, at least for the mujahedin side, before examining the tribal dynamics of the war, and specifically the Pathans' men relationship to their women.

It is in chapter 3 that Mr. Kaplan makes his trip into Afghanistan and gives a first-hand account of the Khyber Pass that connects Pakistan to Afghanistan; from then on, the reader gets an intimate and intricate image of the war's first line of attack, just as the portraits of the mujahedin get enriched with more detail and precision.

The greater image that emerges is how America let the Pakistani intelligence services, the ISI, run this war and how this jeopardized the subordination of American interests to Pakistan's own geopolitical priorities. Mr. Kaplan is very somber about this: "In the end, the mujahidin's willingness to suffer to a nearly unimaginable degree eventually overcame, and thus masked, the awful mistakes of American and Pakistani policy makers."

The revised edition includes a new chapter, "The Lawless Frontier" which marks Kaplan's return to the region (in the spring of 2000), and which narrates the way that Pakistan promoted the Taliban as a substitute for Gulbuddin Heykmatyar's inability to consolidate his power in Afghanistan and thus serve Pakistan's interests.

If there is an easy way to explain this complex dynamic between Afghans, Pakistanis and Americans, "Soldiers of God" is it. But in the end, Mr. Kaplan would shy away from any grandiose statements; "For American policy makers, there may be no reliably applicable lessons of the Afghan war except that you win some and you lose some," he writes. A sad conclusion to a war that cost 1.3 million lives.

Book Description

Welcome to the world of the modern Asian American woman, where the willingness to cause "trouble" -- to stir the waters, think deeply, and go against what is expected -- is the first of many steps to self-discovery and power. Now, Phoebe Eng shatters stereotypes and offers a bold new vision for American-raised daughters like herself.

A second-generation eldest daughter, caught between cultures, codes of behavior, and colliding worlds, Eng had to learn that in order to be true to herself, conflict and tough choices were necessary. But with those, she found, came a wonderful payoff: the doors to opportunity flew open.

Serving as both guide and mentor, Eng addresses the range of issues Asian American women face, including:

Warrior Lessons signifies a generation and goes far beyond the limiting portrayal of what Eng calls "The Good Little Model Minority Girl." At last, here is a manual for today's woman warrior as she channels her rage and cultivates her power.

5 out of 5 stars More relevant for professional AA women, but good for all.......2004-11-27

I read the book after I finished law school. It reflects many of the feelings that I have/have had about being an AA woman in American society. The book also provides strategies regarding how to forge ahead in one's life with honesty, conviction, determination, and zest. Best of all, it made me feel less alone -- that I wasn't imagining my struggles in the complex terrain of ethnicity, gender, class, and the second-generation experience.

3 out of 5 stars loud and comfortable cheer w/o much ground.......2003-03-05

I found the shallowness and too many of didactic conclusions the author drew for each topic a kind of laughable. So in a way, this book is uplifting. To think what the uplifting tone is based upon, it becomes really dark.

Yes, it is worthwhile to bring up all of those topics and problems that Asian American women face without a choice in the racist society. But the vibrant comments with loud cheer and all those preachy easy bleezy solutions from a successful woman like her only burden readers with another model minority obligation. They are not alone as a silenced and supressed mainority female group. But they need more than this 'comfortablly meaningless encouragement' when they go beyond the painful acknowledgment and the difficulty of where they are really situated: Asian women as commodification in the US context. Or a lot of Asian women are still living in a denial but they are still 'former war victims' and/or 'sex objects' in the collective psyche and they are consciously and unconsciously live up to it because of their voicelessness and underrepresentation in the society. This book touches all the subjexts remotely and never goes into any of it in a sufficient level. Still, it preaches on 'power'. The irony is that this book consequently gives us the impression that the author is the only woman who posesses the power she talks about.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book! A must read for all Asian American females!.......2002-02-20

This book was very insightful, informative, and powerful! This opened my eyes to a lot of the struggles that Asian females go through. I do lots of one-on-one counseling with Asian college kids and young adults, many of them female. This book definately opened my eyes to a lot of things and helped me understand their struggles.
Overall, Phoebe Eng and the ladies she interviewed really opened their hearts and minds to lend themselves for this book. In addition to this, I'd also recommend Making Waves and Making More Waves by Elaine Kim and others, along with Yell-oh Girls.
I think it's high time that the world stop seeing Asian ladies like the stereotypes we've been taught and started seeing them as God does.
Again, Thanks to Phoebe Eng for putting this together and for all of those brave ladies who came forward and shared thier stories. God bless each and everyone of you!

5 out of 5 stars Our book club loved it.......2001-08-06

We just started an Asian American woman's reading circle and Warrior Lessons was our first book. All I can say is that it was the perfect choice, because it helped us start one of the most intense conversations I've ever heard between Asian American "sisters." Eng's book covered so many of the issues each of us faced over the last few years -- in relationships, on the job, with our families and self image. Several of us felt that she put our thoughts into words with such precision, and by doing so, she opened the door for a much deeper discussion about our hopes, our fears, and how we begin to connect our stories together, in the name of building community.

4 out of 5 stars Good Reading!.......2000-12-22

I found this book facsinating and insightful. It is easly to read and fully engaging -- Eng is grand story teller. While I found a few of her conclusions a bit of a stretch, most were right on target. Overall, the book was enlightening -- it revealed society's stereotypes and enabled me to re-investigate my own projections and prejudices.

5 out of 5 stars Much better than most of Prima's guides.......2002-07-05

This book has everything you need for these games and I mean it. I'm really tough on hint guides, especially when they give you less help as you get toward the end when you need it most, as many Prima guides do, but this one provided thorough coverage all through. In fact it went beyond the call of duty, giving a complete monster index, complete breeding help, personality charts, lists of what monsters can be found in all worlds (including magic key worlds), locations of all items, the complete scouting report on all bosses and colossium opponents, and other useful trivia. It's for both games and even goes into the possible interactions between them. Believe me, the monster guide alone is enough reason to get this book, so do it.

Book Description

The first title in a new trilogy from Dragonlance author team Thompson and Cook.

Writing team Thompson & Cook once again explore the history of the ancient Dragonlance world in A Warrior's Journey, the first title in the new Ergoth trilogy. Considered the historical specialists of the Dragonlance world, the authors take the story to a colorful and violent era of its history that has not been previously chronicled in any novel.

The mighty Ergothian empire is gripped by civil war.

Centuries before the first Cataclysm sunders Ansalon, two imperial dynasties struggle for supremacy. Brutal warlords jockey for power, while corrupt wizards sell their skills to the highest bidder. Unnatural monsters prey on the unwary.

Amid this chaos and upheaval, a brave young peasant shakes the towers of the mighty as his fate and the destiny of Krynn collide.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars One of the best.......2006-10-27

This is the first book of the Ergoth Trilogy, and I seriously think it's just as good as Chronicles and Legends. The authors do a superb job of mixing fantastical Ergoth with old European feudalism. More than most Dragonlance books, this book is less fantasy (though there's still a bit of magic) and more like something that could have actually happened in our own history.

5 out of 5 stars Highly underrated trilogy.......2005-08-18

This book snuck up on me. I bought it thinking it was the latest in a line of Dragonlance books that had been, as of late, sub-par. Yet, what I read was truly a diamond in the rough. I am guessing this book (and trilogy) will be overlooked by many readers.

This first book, covers a rather extended period of time. We start with a 10 year old boy and end with a man attached to a Horde. To some, this may be too long of time frame, but in the current story line it's an appropriate time lapse.

I can't say enough things about this book. It's a truly a captivating read. The story is a great mix of action and character development. I also like the fact that this trilogy covers a little know part of the creation of Krynn, that being the Horde wars.

If you haven't read this book and are a fan of the Dragonlance setting, you really should treat yourself to thsi fine book.

5 out of 5 stars Take a ride on the wilder side of Krynn!.......2004-11-30

With 'Warrior's Journey,' Thompson and Cook return quality storytelling to the world of Krynn. The tale of Tol is such that it can be enjoyed by any audience- it does not rely on awkward machinations or convoluted prequels (as do so many current Dragonlance novels). And long-time fans of Dragonlance take heart! We get a glimpse into an oft-mentioned but little-described empire- ancient Ergoth, in all its primitive power.

5 out of 5 stars Fans of Adventure - a must read series!.......2004-09-13

I picked up this book at the local military book store, but I did not get the chance to read it until several months after I purchased it. Had I known just how good the book would be, I would have read it the day I bought it. Book 2 in the series is every bit as good as book 1, though it does not take place over the long time period, but rather over a short frame of several weeks; it is also the perfect setup for book 3 and the ending of a great trilogy.

I love the characters of the series, the irony of the events, and the visual details the authors portray. Thompson and Cook are definitely a duo that should continue writing their works together.

3 out of 5 stars Almost 4 star worthy.......2004-07-05

This is a hard one to rate. It's like the first novel of the Kngpriest trilogy. It starts slow but builds steam as it goes along.

There should've been parts in this novel to devide Tol's years. In one paragragh he's a kid, then in the next he's ten yrs. older. By the end, you're immersed in these characters' lives as with most DL novels & there's plenty of twists. Certainly good enough to make you want to read book 2.

2 out of 5 stars Poor writing, and shallow.......2007-10-10

I wished I could say this more politely, but it cannot be avoided. Edna is, first and foremost, a Christian. Therefore, she treated the Christian terrorists in the northeast extremely gently, almost apologetically. Those who do not know, the Christian terrorists in northeastern states are killing Hindus, not just the settlers form the plains, but also their own folk who refuse to convert. The purpose is to establish Christendom. I think her real purpose for writing the book was to criticize the "Hindu" crook Thackerey. She did not hold back on using harsh language for him. It is a farcical, and extremely biased book.

4 out of 5 stars Entertaining, funny, and shallow........2007-07-09

Religious fundamentalists are funny to listen to. If not for the tremendous atrocities and nefarious schemes tied to their simple words, that the fundamentalists do not seem to completely comprehend, they could be considered proper comedians. In the area of religious fundamentalism, similar to other areas such as arts, architecture, music, movies, religion, India has so much to offer. For there seem to be all kinds of religious fanaticisms thriving posing a threat to the secular nature of the Indian republic.

The author takes the approach of interviewing some key figures who seem to be fanning these flames and those who have been burnt and scarred by them. Her interviews are funny. The entertaining detail she provides is the stuff of romantic and dramatic novels rather than that of a contemporary history book and makes for a quick reading.

However, when it comes to the task of providing the meaning in the bigger context that the "warriors" themselves are clearly missing, the author takes a rather shallow approach. The historical context she provides is fragmented and linked to only a few well-known events in the recent past rather than the description of a psyche which has been influenced and built over hundreds and thousands of years. The nuances of identities, affectations, and affiliations built over the centuries is given only superficial treatment.

The tying in of these communal forces to the bigger context of religious pluralism, leave alone secularism, humanism, and Indian egalitarian law, is completely lacking. There is no overall theme or premise, those are left for the reader to surmise. All the reader gets is a set of interviews which are, in the name of equal treatment and even handedness, categorized into the four religious strifes related to Christianity, Hinduism, Sikhism, and Islam.

In the end I was left with a feeling about the book the author herself tries to draw from her interview with a beauty queen who won the Miss World in 1999. The beauty queen seems to be drawn into campaigning for the Hindu Nationalist Party (BJP) in 2004 without properly understanding what she stands for and what the consequences of her actions entail. I wished the author had provided a structure to her investigations on the lessons to be learned and the rightful actions to be taken to curtail such evil forces. But I understand that it is a daunting task when one spreads the canvas as wide on a problem as that of religious fundamentalism in India. However, it was within her reach.

As a reader it is for you to infer what those lessons are, the author does provide some interesting and provocative material. The book, if not for anything, is entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars God on whose side?.......2006-07-08

This is a remarkable, brave, moving, disturbing, funny and at times beautiful book. It tackles head-on the great Indian paradox, which most observers tend to ignore or obfuscate: that India is a centre of religion and spirituality, and hence of tolerance, celebrating the many paths available to those seeking the Godhead; yet it has also been home to some of the most terrible atrocities committed anywhere in the name of religion. Ms Fernandes's insight is to see that this is not really a paradox at all: "Home to all the major religions, India is also, inevitably, host to virtually every type of religious fanatic."

Her book takes us on a tour of India's religious flashpoints: to the Islamic seminary in Deoband in the state of Uttar Pradesh; to Gujarat, where a terrible pogrom in 2002 saw Hindus slaughter hundreds of Muslims with the connivance of the state government; to Ayodhya, where the destruction of a mosque built on what Hindu fundamentalists claim is the birthplace of the god Ram still reverberates in national politics; to Amritsar, where the storming of the Sikhs' holiest shrine, the Golden Temple, by government forces in 1984 was followed by the assassination of a prime minister, a decade of violent insurrection and a brutal repression; to Goa, home of her ancestors, where she finds the brutality of the Christian inquisition still echoing in contemporary disputes; to Kashmir, India's only Muslim-majority state, now in its seventeenth year of bloody insurgency; and to Nagaland, in the north-east, where Baptist Christians have been waging one of the world's longest-running independence struggles.

What makes the book a riveting read, besides the inherent interest of the theme, is Ms Fernandes's skill as an observer, as a listener, and as a writer. She has an astonishing gift for bringing her interlocutors to life, and a flair for descriptive humour. (At Goan get-togethers in the London of her childhood "rhino-rumped Goan matrons swathed in purple satin would dance with diminutive husbands to the cha-cha-cha and tango."). The Shahi Imam of Delhi's Jami Masjid, spiritual leader of India's 150m Muslims, is a "grizzled old lion...behind gold-framed Ray Ban-style glasses". Prahmans Ramchandra Das, self-appointed keeper of the Hindu flame at Ayodhya, and aged 93 when she met him, just before he died, "looked like a sinister marmoset" (I can confirm the truth of this observation.)

Ms Fernandes seems to have won the trust of all her interviewees. They have opened to her and revealed themselves and their subject in new lights. Even the "supercop" K.P.S. Gill, who to some Sikhs will forever be the "butcher of Punjab", seems to have been unable to resist her charms.

She has not betrayed the trust. She has neither mocked her subjects unfairly, nor given them undue latitude. Among the book's delights are her occasional wry asides. After a hilarious description of khaki-knickered members of the RSS, a Hindu-fundamentalist mass organisation, at a "shakha", an early morning gathering for physical jerks with attitude, she quotes the blood-curdling prayer they sing calling for the "breaking" of Pakistan. "Not quite the Boy Scouts, then," she notes.

India is gaining plenty of international attention at the moment: as an emerging economic powerhouse, especially because of its "outsourcing" industries; as a nuclear power about to be legitimised by America; as an extraordinary triumph of democratic values in the face of internal disorder, external threat and unimaginable diversity. This book is an indispensible reminder that one of the most important forms of that diversity--religious--is also a source of some of the biggest threats it faces: bigotry, fear and hatred. "Holy Warriors" is also a joy to read.

    Book Description

"Budo is the way to cut oneself from one’s first step to the point one can reach. To cut oneself means to face our own mind directly, honestly, strictly; to polish the mind by cutting away cowardliness, selfishness, ugliness, and weakness. To have the mind’s eye, me must have a strong mind. At the same time, it is absolutely necessary to be very humble."
    -From the Foreword

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Best understanding yet.......2004-08-30

This small volume does more to explain the understanding of the benefits of a martial art than many larger books. From the very begining the simple and clear journey of one man to understand himself by following a way makes this a welcome addition to any serious student's library.

5 out of 5 stars which self do you defend?.......2001-11-29

Sometimes the mental side of the martial arts gets lost in training. Mr. White's book attempts to put back some of the earliest lessons of the martial arts. It is one book that should be reread the longer you train. My copy is now falling apart, but after first reading it some ten years ago I am still learning from this small book.

5 out of 5 stars Karate Do in Poetry.......2001-03-17

As a 16 year practitioner of the martial arts I found Thomas White's words to be inspiring. He has captured the essence of budo training in what normally must be read between the lines of technical manuals - The non-physical elements of Karate Do that are always assumed to be there, but most cannot explain...because no technical manual can guide one to the spirit of the arts. Thomas White has created a wonderful book that describes these mystic elements in what is the only literary form that could capture such an essence - poetry. Sometimes direct to the point, other times more abstract, but always with purpose. All passages reflect the experiences of this humble man on his journey toward self perfection through the martial arts. I have brought this book out countless times to share appropriate quotes and passages with my students. Buy this book. Share in the journey.

4 out of 5 stars Good book for personal renewal of the spiritual Karate........1998-03-10

As stated in the title, this is one mans journey for understanding through Karate. The book is an excellant rendition of the thoughts and awakenings felt by some one deciding to take the journey for understanding through a Martial Discipline. Beginners in Karate may have some difficulty in grasping the content, but beginner and teacher alike can enjoy the shared feelings of gained knowledge. For further study I suggest; Nicol's Moving Zen or Jay Gluck's Zen Combat, although both are more technique extensive, the end is the same.
