Book Description

On a splendid August afternoon Susanna Osbourne is introduced to the most handsome man she has ever seen . . . and instantly feels the icy chill of recognition. Peter Edgeworth, Viscount Whitleaf, is utterly charming—and seemingly unaware that they have met before. With his knowing smile and seductive gaze, Peter acts the rake; but he stirs something in Susanna she has never felt before, a yearning that both frightens and dazzles her. Instantly she knows: this brash nobleman poses a threat to her heart . . . and to the secrets she guards so desperately.

From the moment they meet, Peter is drawn to Susanna’s independence, dazzled by her sharp wit—he simply must have her. But the more he pursues, the more Susanna withdraws . . . until a sensual game of thrust-and-parry culminates in a glorious afternoon of passion. Now more determined than ever to keep her by his side, Peter begins to suspect that a tragic history still haunts Susanna. And as he moves closer to the truth, Peter is certain of one thing: he will defy the mysteries of her past for a future with this exquisite creature—all Susanna must do is trust him with the most precious secret of all. . . .

5 out of 5 stars I was sorry to have it end.......2007-09-19

which is ironic when you consider that, first, I hesitated in buying it and, then had it for two months before getting around to starting it!

I was turned off by some of the lukewarm reviews which sort of echoed annoyances I felt with previous books (the never-ending presence of the Bedwins, the ever-recurring use of the the ducal quizzing glass, etc.) Yes, they were there but they didn't detract from the book at all. An imperfect Mary Balogh is still so much better than a perfect any-other-regency-novelist that it doesn't matter at all.

As is usual in her novels, the characters are completely believable: in character development, in their actions and reactions, in their time and place, in the balance between their imperfections, virtues and motivations, and in their passage through the plot from beginning to end.

Nothing wildly dramatic happens in the plot. This isn't an adventure, a mystery, a conflict, a comedy or a drama, at least not any more or any less than a slice of real life is any (or all) of the above. The plot is character driven and well-paced. It is not psycho-babble, but insights into the thoughts and feelings of intelligent and imperfect human beings who make and admit mistakes and try, as all of us do, to grow from our experiences and to try to do what is right when confronted with the temptations, challenges, and opportunities that this particular moment of their lives present.

It is sometimes hard to believe that these are not real people which explains why, after reaching into yourself and relating--with genuine interest, empathy, and warmth--to some part of each of them, it is so hard to let them go.

5 out of 5 stars Misleading Reviews.......2007-08-31

As a long-time Balogh fan, I was hesitant to buy this book after some of the extremely negative reviews. I'm glad I did. A self-effacing, kind, charming, cheerful hero and a buoyant, energetic, loving heroine, both intelligent and striving towards maturity, are lovingly portrayed in all their insights and lack thereof. Granted, the book is more a study of individual emotional evolution than action, but the couple is charming, their development believeable, and, as always, Ms Balogh brings it all together with the most complete of happy endings--something THIS reader of romances truly appreciates. Unless you just have to have serious threats, conflicts, crimes and mayhem in your romances, you'll enjoy it!

I am a long-time fan of Mary Balogh--but about three or four books back something went terribly wrong. So--got this from the library instead--and stopped about 30 pages in. Back it goes.

Read her old Signet paperbacks if you want to know why people love(d) her, not this wince-inspiring mishmash of recycled themes she did better 10 or 15 years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Another magical story from Mary Balogh.......2007-07-13

Mary Balogh's consistently high standard of writing is once again shown in "Simply Magic", the third of her 'Simply' Quartet ("Simply Unforgettable," and "Simply Love" precede this book). The events in this book take place largely at the same time as those in "Simply Love" and in fact some scenes are the same as we see the story from Susanna Osborne's view.

Susanna Osborne is a teacher at Miss Martin's School For Girls in Bath, having first attended the school as a pupil from age 12 when her father died unexpectedly and she ran away from being a burden to the family for whom he worked. Susanna's whole life has revolved around the school but when Frances, the Countess of Edgecombe and a former teacher (whose story is told in "Simply Unforgettable") invites Susanna to stay with her for two weeks Susanna agrees. On her first day at the Countess's estate she meets up with a group from the neighbouring house which includes a visitor, Viscount Whitleaf. The name Whitleaf is anathema to Susanna because of events in her past (which aren't initially explained) and so she treats him rather rudely. Besides, Peter Whitleaf is clearly a rather shallow young man, always flirting with young ladies and paying them lavish compliments but without too much between his ears.

However Whitleaf finds Susanna interesting, partly because she isn't flirting with him, and he strikes up a friendship with her. However at the end of the two weeks she returns to the school having turned down his offer to become his mistress and she and Anne Jewell, another teacher, tell each other about their love lives (this scene is also in "Simply Love"). Anne Jewell has to have a shotgun wedding and when the delayed wedding breakfast takes place Susanna is shocked to discover that Viscount Whitleaf is attending it. He stretches out his time in Bath, meeting Susanna on a number of occasions, and eventually persuading her to visit her original home.

Once again this story delves deeply into the emotions and histories of our characters. Whitleaf and Susanna are both attractive people who are much loved and yet their lives aren't as carefree as they might seem. Whitleaf has never been able to take mastery of his own house since his majority, being under his mother's thumb; Susanna has not been able to deal with the grief following the suicide of her father and her feeling of rejection. The two of them find that their stories entwine and their histories are significantly linked and work together to bring about some kind of resolution.

This is an excellent read, as usual with Mary Balogh. Perhaps the subject matter isn't quite as in depth as she sometimes offers (for example in "Simply Love") and the characters seem in some ways less complex but it is still a beautiful story with a genuinely kind hero.

This is a great book...seems to be in "classic" Foley style. I can't wait for the next two.

I love all G.F. books. If you love battle of the sexes, wit, charm and intense emotion, Gaelen Foley is the author you've been waiting for. I just finished all of her books and have proudly cried through each one. I'm not a cryer and to read a book and cry at the same time is a world record for me, but I did it and I'm not ashamed of it because her books are worth it!!!!!

This is a well written, fast paced romance. Lots of drama and excitement as well as the romantic part of the story.

This is yet another wonderful story by Gaelon Foley. Her attention to detail along with the sparks between the characters make this book hard to put down.

4 out of 5 stars Nice read.......2007-07-21

Gaelen Foley did a nice job with this book. The first part of the book takes place in India, and it's very detailed and easy to visualize the scenes. The remainder takes place in England. Some of the storyline is a little unbelieveable, but for the most part, it is an excellent story and a fun read.

Book Description

For no gentleman is this more true than Charles Morwellan, the eighth Earl of Meredith. Although he's seen the many successful unions of his Cynster connections, he has also watched his father's obsessions nearly destroy their family and fortune, a mistake Charles will not repeat. But as Lord Meredith he must marry, so he offers for Sarah, the daughter of his neighbors Lord and Lady Conningham. She's intelligent enough to run his social life, beautiful enough to grace his arm, and old enough to know the value of his offer.

For most young ladies of the ton, the right marriage is the culmination of years of training, perfect deportment, and intricate plans that would impress a general. But as a lady of independent means with a life of her own, Sarah is unwilling to wed unless it is for unbounded love.

But Charles always gets what he wants. He convinces Sarah to give him two weeks to win her; if he succeeds, they will marry immediately. And so begins an intense courtship. By day, Charles and Sarah are models of decorum indulging in innocuous walks, polite conversation, sedate waltzes. Each night they steal away to the lush, moonlit gardens, where sensual embraces turn to searing kisses, and much, much more. Both are swept away on a tide of passion and feeling neither can resist.

And yet, after the wedding, despite nights of insatiable passion, Charles remains aloof, as if the near-sinful sweetness of their nights exists only in a dream. Sarah battles to prove that true love is a force that can't be contained, a gift worth fighting for, but it's only when she's engulfed in a web of increasingly dangerous incidents that Charles discovers how much he's willing to surrender to protect . . . the taste of innocence.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars I really liked this book..........2007-09-13

...Until they got married and Charlie revealed his true immaturity. I think the way he treated Sarah was shoddy and I lost all respect for him at that point. In my book, real men shouldn't be afraid to "admit" that they care for someone, and saying "I love you", (if you mean it), does not diminish ones masculinity. Charlie comes off as damaged goods and as someone with control issues in this novel and Sarah is the only grown-up in their relationship. This is a turn-off to me.
Yes, they do have a happy ending, but I feel sorry for Sarah and hope that he is there for her (emotionally and physically) when the babies start coming and afterward.

Later: Goodness! I was kind of harsh when I rated this book. The end does get better and Charlie and Sarah do resolve their differences. Maybe their anguish makes the resolution sweeter? If I can identify that much with the characters so that I (as the reader) feel emotionally involved, that may be a good thing. At least I am reacting to the story, and not bored.

2 out of 5 stars Sorry Charlie, but you didn't cut it........2007-06-26

I really tried to give Charlie the benefit of the doubt but come on. How long did Charlie think he was going to have a hot time in the bed at night while he treated his new wife like dirt during the day? And the "I'm afraid to love" was a real turn-off. He never even seemed man enough to me to rate as a hero. At least the Cynster men could kick some serious a** so their struggles with love seemed macho. Charlie just seemed like a whining baby. Just because his father made bad decisions hadn't a thing to do with love in my book. He was just a weak man and left Althea to run the family. Sorry, Charlie, you just aren't grown up enough for me to lust after.

And what was it with this book saying that Portia and Simon aren't married yet? The Perfect Lover (their book) came out FOUR years before this book. That was an editing mistake that really bothered me.

I love the Cynsters but maybe this series is just tired.

5 out of 5 stars Fourteenth in the Cynster series.......2007-06-10

This is the fourteenth novel in the Cynster series but it works very well as a standalone book with just occasional glimpses of characters from the other books. It gives an interesting insight into the wooing and the early days of a marriage between an Earl and a woman whom he has known his entire life. Sarah Conningham is a 23 year old woman who is part of a happy family and whose nature is warm and loving. However the reason that she has turned down several offers of marriage in the last few years is because she believes that marriage without love isn't worth it - she's only going to marry for love. The inconvenient attraction she feels for Charlie Morwellan, eighth Earl of Meredith, is something she has to ignore as he has no interest whatsoever in her.

When Charlie offers for Sarah it is because he knows she will make the perfect countess. They have grown up together and although they don't know each other well he knows that she is just what he needs. However he's surprised to find that she doesn't instantly accept his proposal but instead asks for two weeks to get to know him. Charlie decides to use the time to persuade her into the marriage and goes about this with traditional wooing mixed up with sensual experience. A lot of the first section of the book is details of their kissing and more but it's well written and it gives an idea of the characters, their thoughts and how they are getting to know each other.

The second part of the book follows their early days of marriage when Charlie realises he has fallen in love with his wife but is afraid it will cause him to make bad decisions, as his father did, and so he tries to withdraw. Although whilst reading the story this makes some kind of sense, subsequently it all seems a bit unlikely. However, Charlie and Sarah's relationship has its troubles and there are also some unfortunate events taking place at an orphanage of which Sarah is the patroness. Is there a deeper plot against the owner of the orphanage? Will Charlie come to his senses? What is the link with the railway scam and their troubles?

Stephanie Laurens' writing style is very good. Although there's a fair amount of sex in this book it's written in a pleasant and loving style and it is part of the overall plot. The characters grow and change as the story progresses, Sarah coming into her element as countess and understanding more about her husband than perhaps he does, Charlie realising that his priorities in life up to now haven't been right. The 'baddie' in this story is a rather half-hearted one and it was fairly easy to guess who it was but the plot about the attacks on the orphanage added some interest to the story. Overall it was a very enjoyable read and although sometimes Charlie seemed to speak in a rather modern American manner about emotions, it was good to have a happy ending without too much heartache in the middle.

2 out of 5 stars disappionted fan.......2007-06-09

Let me start by saying that I am a true Laurens fan. I have every book she has written and this is the first time that I was truly not interested. The characters were really boring and almost seemed like robots to me because they had no depth. The plot was fine, I know people complain about the similarity to her other books, but I find comfort in the familiarity.

Now the reason I am truly not happy is because this book lacks passion. There I said it and I am not ashamed! I read Stephanie Laurens books because they tell a story about characters that usually have a sizzling heat between them. Her books are always well written, rich with detail, and that only adds to the romance. However, this book is all detail and very little romance....much less passion.

By the end of the book I felt like I was reading about my grandparents. I feel like Mrs.Laurens has grown almost clinical in her writing. I wish she would go back and read some of her older books like "A Rakes Vow", "All about Passion", or even more recently "A Gentleman's Honor". Not only do the characters really really like one another in those books.....I know why they do.

I have seen a trend in her most recent books leading to this one and I do not like it. I want my romance back, I want to know why the main characters like one another. There was internal dialog in this book, but that was the problem....I did not know what they were thinking because it was basically completely internal.

Most of all I want my passion back, the fiery discourse. I have always loved the exaggerated interactions in her older books....romance novels are fantasy and they give so much inspiration!

4 out of 5 stars Not that Bad!!!.......2007-04-25

The other reviews were a little harsh. Even though this book was a little longer than Laurens previous cynster novels, I still liked it. It was a love story with a mystery thrown in. If this is your first Lauren's title, I wouldn't recommend it, but it was a great continuation of the Cynster stories!!!

Product Description

Mr. Darcy's Diary presents the story of the unlikely courtship of Elizabeth Bennet and Fitzwilliam Darcy from Darcy's point of view--sharing his innermost thoughts and feelings. This graceful imagining and sequel to Price and Prejudice explains Darcy s moodiness and the difficulties of his reluctant relationship as he struggles to avoid falling in love with Miss Bennett. Though seemingly stiff and stubborn at times, Darcy s words prove him also to be quite devoted and endearing qualities that eventually win over Miss Bennett s heart. This continuation of a classic romantic novel is charming and elegant, much like Darcy himself.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2007-09-28

I absolutely loved this book. It was not particularly deep and it was very easy reading, but as I am in college, I get enough heavy stuff. It came at a perfect time and I enjoyed reading it immensely. I also gave it to my roommate to read and she loved it too, even though she does not particularly like Pride and Prejudice. The only thing I would say about it is that you had better have read the original before this book, or it won't make sense. I give it two thumbs up!

4 out of 5 stars Too short..........2007-09-07

This was a very quick read and I did enjoy it, however it was a little too short. I also had quite a bit of the original dialogue as quotes and for the size of this book I thought it was too much. I did like the idea though and this gives some insight into Mr. Darcy's perspective of all the events plus a little idea of what could have happened after the P&P ends. Enjoyable read but not the best sequel out there.

5 out of 5 stars Mr. Darcy's Diary.......2007-09-05

Amanda Grange really kept the same language and tone that Jane Austen used in the original story of Pride & Prejudice. She retold the same story from Darcy's point of view. I thought she did an excellent job.

I enjoyed how she added some witty examples of their married life together at the end. Even with having to deal with all the crazies from both of their families, I think they are going to make it.

4 out of 5 stars Fitzwilliam Darcy---humanized!.......2007-09-05

The aspect of this novel by Amanda Grange which pleases me most is that she has been successful in turning Fitzwilliam Darcy into a flesh and blood man. Since Pride and Prejudice is essentially written from Elizabeth Bennet's point of view, at times I want an explanation of what Darcy is thinking. This book managed to do that for me. Even knowing that these words, thoughts and ideas do not come from Jane Austen, I am still completely satisfied with thinking "my" Mr. Darcy would have been like this. He was arrogant, he did believe in his own self-importance, he did interfere in Bingley's life. But, he also learned from Elizabeth and Bingley and the situations he found himself in that he could change. He didn't need to stay so stiff and formal. He could actually learn to tease and be teased and the world as he knew it would still remain on its axis.

I found this book to be slow going at first. I really didn't think I was going to be able to accept this Darcy as the same one who lives in my imagination. But a strange thing happened as I continued to read. I began to really like this man. Amanda Grange had made him a true, real, loveable person for me. As most of the other reviewers have said, I also am a huge fan of the Jane Austen books. Ms Grange does not try to be Jane Austen. She tries to be herself, giving us her version of how she thinks Fitzwilliam Darcy might have responded to his situations. I applaud her effort and recommend this book as a worthwhile read.

This is just a little extra information in case you get confused (as I did). This book came out in Britain in 2005 in hardcover and was titled DARCY'S DIARY. It has a full head portrait of Darcy on the cover, quite interesting but maybe just a little too feminine for "my" Darcy. The paperback was published in 2007 and is titled MR. DARCY'S DIARY. I, of course, was not careful and managed to buy them both. The paperback has only a partial portrait, probably because the publisher discovered that each of us has our own mental picture of Fitzwilliam Darcy. Both books are identical in every way except as I have stated. Now, my advice is to just read and enjoy one copy or the other.

5 out of 5 stars Great reading!.......2007-08-16

I enjoyed this book for it kept me interested to a point that I "soaked it up" and finished it in a day but I kept reviewing the best parts I enjoyed most.

3 out of 5 stars Good read.......2007-01-12

This was a good, easy read. The first story was okay, but not the best I have ever read. I really enjoyed the Kenyon story and the last one had to be my favorite by far. For some reason, I can't remember much about one of them, it must not have been that good.

I recommend this one for light reading on a rainy weekend.

3 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2007-01-07

The Amanda Ashly & Maggie Shane stories weren't that disappointing because I don't expect a lot from them. Sherilyn Kenyon;however, I usually love except when she goes for porn which she unfortunately decided to do here. Ronda Thompson's story was too short. I was annoyed that this story, like her story in "Love At First Bite" fall into the middle of her "Wild Wulfs" series. Readers of that series will forever be missing two pieces of the family history unless they happen to stumble upon the missing links in the two anthologies. Not fair to her fans. If the publisher felt neither story was complete enough for its own book, why not combine them in a seperate small book or add one to book 2 and one to book 3 of the trilogy? Curse you, St. Martin's Press!

I bought this for Kenyon story and I was not disappointed, what a great intro into the dream-hunters...I'm really looking forward to the first full length dreamhunter book in her darkhunter series. I really like Rhonda Thompson...I don't care what other reviewers say, if you like paranoral romance you'll love her stories. I think some reviewers are more partial to the paranormal and not the romance so maybe they don't enjoy it as much but I honestly loved the story. Amanda Ashley's was good but was missing something. I couldn't bring myself to finish the Maggie Shayne story it just didn't work for me.

Book Description

New York Times bestselling author Mary Balogh returns to the elegance and sensuality of Regency England as she continues the enthralling story of four remarkable women–friends and teachers at Miss Martin’s School for Girls. At the center of this spellbinding novel is Anne Jewell, a teacher haunted by a scandalous past…until she meets a man who teaches her the most important lesson of all: nothing is simple when it comes to love.…

She spies him in the deepening dusk of a Wales evening–a lone figure of breathtaking strength and masculinity, his handsome face branded by a secret pain. For single mother and teacher Anne Jewell, newly arrived with her son at a sprawling estate in Wales on the invitation of an influential friend, Sydnam Butler is a man whose sorrows–and passions–run deeper than she could have ever imagined.

As steward of a remote seaside manor, Sydnam lives a reclusive existence far from the pity and disdain of others. Yet almost from the moment Anne first appears on the cliffs, he senses in this lovely stranger a kindred soul, and between these two wary hearts, desire stirs. Unable to resist the passion that has rescued them both from loneliness, Anne and Sydnam share an afternoon of exquisite lovemaking. Now the unwed single mother and war-scarred veteran must make a decision that could forever alter their lives. For Sydnam, it is a chance to heal the pain of the past. For Anne, it is the glorious promise of a future with the man who will dare her to reveal her deepest secrets…before she can give him all her heart.

5 out of 5 stars Impressively sweet.......2007-09-19

I've read several of Mary Balogh's books over the years, and while I wouldn't consider myself a HUGE fan, I've usually enjoyed them. "Simply Love" was the first book of hers that I have really and truly loved. While, like other reviewers, I could have lived without the more-than-a-cameo appearances by the "Slightly" series cast members, I adored both Sydnam and Anne. Their courtship was quiet, sweet, and surprisingly undramatic considering their pasts, but it was none-the-less very compelling. I also appreciated both characters' abilities to see their own flaws and work to fix the problem. Their concerns were realistic ones, especially considering the time period, made all the more believable by their respective families, who were not as unrealistically accepting as the Bedwyn clan. But neither were the families portrayed as evil for their reactions. They were simply products of their time, and both were won over by their love for their children.
While "Simply Love" did not make me want to read more about the courtships of the various Bedwyns, I plan on taking a closer look at Mary Balogh's books in the future, in the hopes of finding another book as sweet and simple (simply sweet?) as this one.

3 out of 5 stars OK.......2007-08-22

I thought the book was well written, but if you are looking for an entertaining fun read this is not it!

4 out of 5 stars I Loved it BUT..........2007-08-07

I loved the book and the characters. It is a great story and so different from what other books are out there...but, I had a hard time with the first chapter. Ms. Balogh introduced a few too many characters all at once and I was totally lost as to who was who. Other than that, I enjoyed the book and will buy more written by her.

5 out of 5 stars Adding this to my list of favourite love stories..........2007-06-09

This is one of the BEST love storys I have ever read. Mary Balogh has done it again! I recently became a big fan of Balogh after I found one of her books at costco; I have bought and read many of her books since and when I found out she was working on a story for Sydnam, I decided I would not read it because I didn't think I could get over all of Sydnams horrific war injuries; I am so glad I changed my mind because it moved me like no other book has in a very long time. There is so much depth to both characters and you just can't help but fall in love with them as you get to know them and understand what they go through. Mary Balogh developed Sydnams character so well that I felt his pain throughout the book. I found myself weeping at the oddest moments and ws so sad when the story came to an end.

5 out of 5 stars Sublime.......2007-06-08

This is an amazing book. For starters, it's a story about adults (not about an adult man and a teenaged girl), with main characters who have been through hard times and been damaged by them. Both are likable, and they each make sense -- how they got into their situations and what being in those situations has done to them. It's fascinating to see that kind of romance in a genre novel like this, and I enjoyed the change of pace.

The plot is pretty straight-forward, but the characters are so strong it doesn't matter. The writing is strong and fluent, and it's nice to see old friends from other books in supporting roles. I don't think you can take two minor characters from previous books, imbedded in those other stories as they were, and bring them together without involving the old characters. The trajectory of the story is quite nice, with events unfolding gradually, and the two protagonists being changed by their growing relationship, also gradually, and not without some pain along the way.

I found two weaknesses in the plot. First, I'm pretty sure that if you hadn't read Freyja's story, it would be hard to figure out what had happened to Anne in the past and why. I felt like I had a huge advantage because I recalled those details. Second, and more central to this story, I found the reconciliation with her parents too glib. It had to happen, but I felt that it was too easy, really, the way it did happen.

In the end, however, this is a five-star book. I can tell because I've read it more than once, with little diminuation of pleasure. The main characters are drawn with such depth and honesty that there is always something new to discover on rereading.

3 out of 5 stars Can't get past the language.......2007-09-14

I mostly enjoyed reading this book. As other reviewers mention, the plot is insufficient to support the length of the book. I had the feeling the author added the heroine's brother's story just to fill in the pages.
I had a really hard time getting past the sexual terminology - it smacked of pornography, IMO, and was repugnant to me. I most likely will skim any further Sylvia Day books at the store and not read any more if they all use similar language.

5 out of 5 stars How Lovely.......2007-08-23

This was a first time read for me--I really wasn't expecting much--and WOW! I fgound it enchanting, amusing and very entertaining. I will not hesitate to purchase another novel by this author! It was subperb!

4 out of 5 stars 4 stars for the sex, 1.5 stars for the plot.......2007-08-18

I had two reviews spinning in my head about this book and decided to go with the favorable one. Clearly Sylvia Day is not really interested in giving us a literary masterpiece. Her characters are clichés, the storyline is dubious, the side characters negligible. What she boldly offers is some very sexy scenes - not too kinky, not really innovative - but definitely a hot read. By page 60 I stopped caring about the story and characters because I knew that if I stayed the course, I will only get mad at the exorbitant price I paid for this trashy story. So I switched my approach. I let my eye drift over the pages that were outside of the bedroom and just got into the sexy parts - and frankly I had a lot of fun (and a few cold showers) reading this book.

If you are looking for GREAT stories - try elsewhere.
If you are looking for HOT sex (and to be honest, a bit of good healthy porn) - this book will do very well, I think.

2 out of 5 stars Eh........2007-08-09

It was OK for a night's reading but I wouldn't recommend this book. A good book should stick with you and the characters should be people you care about. Neither happened for me.

4 out of 5 stars Always a nice way to spend an afternoon... reading Sylvia Day novel.......2007-06-21

This is historical novel where Isabel and Gerard marry to annoy Gerald's mother and for Isabel to stop the proposals of her many lovers. They have a friendship and each other other lovers. Gerard leaves for fours years and returns a changed man and wants a real marriage. I also like the secondard plot of Isabel's brother.

Book Description

Bestselling author Jane Feather brings to life the glamour, sophistication, and intrigue of Regency-era London in this captivating novel of unexpected passions and dangerous secrets.

Pooling their meager resources, Lady Cornelia Dagenham, her sister-in-law Aurelia, and their friend Liv Lacey arrive in London's Cavendish Square to spend a month at the home Liv has just inherited. But why anyone would show a fervent interest in purchasing the rundown property -- particularly the arrogant Viscount Bonham, who clearly could afford the finest of homes -- is a puzzle to Cornelia. His charms are undeniable, though -- and Cornelia finds her resistance to this mysterious stranger falling away...as a sparking passion clouds her view.

But their affair may place her and her friends in danger as Harry Bonham sweeps her into the sparkling whirl of high society. Leading a double life as a code breaker for the Crown, Harry is a man of many secrets. Is it Cornelia whom he truly desires, or something hidden in the house on Cavendish Square?

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars A Not-So-Wicked Gentleman.......2007-09-10

I was disappointed by this title. From the description, I expected much more. I didn't find either main character particularly engaging and agree with other reviewers who stated there were too many characters. Do we really need all the description and exposition about the nannies? I skimmed a lot of this book, but I did finish reading it (so that says something). However, the male protagonist was not in any way "wicked." He was nice, caring, sympathetic and smart. But mostly, he was ho-hum. My advice is to skip this one.

5 out of 5 stars A Wicked Gentleman.......2007-09-03

Lady Cornelia Dagenham, her sister-in-law Aurelia, and their friend Liv Lacey, are off to London on an adventure. Combining their sparse funds, the three plan to spend a few months in the home Liv recently inherited. Although the home is in terrible condition, they are determined to make it habitable and enjoy their London vacation.

Harry, The Viscount Bonham, has made several bids to purchase Liv's Cavendish Square property, which is a mystery to the three ladies. The viscount is wealthy and has no need for the shabby property. When Harry turns his charm on Cornelia, to her amazement she finds her self responding.

Unbeknownst to Cornelia, Harry is a code breaker for the Crown. His interest in her not only exposes her and her friends to danger, it also raises a distressing question. Does Harry truly desire Cornelia, or is his pursuit of her part of his mission for the Crown?

I thoroughly enjoyed reading A Wicked Gentleman. In fact, I am really looking forward to the next book in this trilogy. These women are smart, engaging and funny. I have been hooked!

A Wicked Gentleman is amusing, sensual and terribly romantic. I can't think of a better way to spend a summer's afternoon than stretched out on a hammock lost in the romance of Jane Feather's A Wicked Gentleman.

3 out of 5 stars A story of a widow and a spy.......2007-06-13

Cornelia is a widow with two young children who moves with two friends into a house in London. These woman move into a dilapidated home with unusual servants. They are quickly wooed by Harry, a viscount who ultimately falls in love with Cornelia. Cornelia initially dislikes Harry, but seems to be overcome by his charms. There is a subplot regarding a mysterious thimble and French agent that creates additional tension.

I love the idea that the character is a mature woman with a family. This makes the story different and enjoyable. Additionally, there are a number of fun characters, such as the unusual butler and the yappy dogs that are quite humorous. However, I didn't like Feather's development of the relationship between Harry and Cornelia. I didn't care that they got together-- in fact, I felt that he was deceptive and she might be better without him. Given that I generally didn't like their relationship or the hero, the novel fell a little flat for me.

4 out of 5 stars Widows, spinsters, and spies.......2007-05-06

Lately, I've been enjoying some lighter reading, namely several new historical romances by authors that I know will usually turn out a good product. Long time author Jane Feather is one of those writers that I trust; while a few of her novels have bombed for me, most of the time she can keep me interested and entertained enough to finish her stories.

Ms. Feather has started a new series with A Wicked Gentleman, set in the Regency period of London, England. Three ladies, Cornelia, her sister-in-law Aurelia, and their cousin Livia, decide to go to London, each one for different reasons. At first uncertain how they will afford it, a surprise legacy from an unknown relation provides them with a house on the fashionable Cavendish Square.

This particular story centers around Cornelia, the widowed Lady Dagenham. Desperate to keep her two young children with her, Cornelia happily agrees to chaperone Lady Liv, and London provides a welcome respite from the threats of her uncle, who seeks to keep her son, Lord Stevie, from any hint of trouble. The idea of having her son taken away from her haunts Cornelia, especially when the proposed tutor is a bit of a sadist.

But London isn't seeming to be that much of a haven either. For one thing, the townhouse is a wreck, along with three aged servants who have their own attitudes about how things ought to be run. But what may be worst of all is the presence of Harry, Viscount Bonham. Besides being devastatingly handsome (aren't they always?), Harry has quite a few secrets of his own, and he and Nell keep crossing paths.

Unhappily for both Nell and Harry, his secrets, including the rather lurid death of his former wife, and his own reasons for seeking out the trio of ladies may prove to be too much for any hope of romance to survive the ugly truth. It's a tried and true plot that is usually found in romantic historicals, but Jane Feather manages to breathe some new life into the story.

For one, the heroine, isn't the usual sort of ninny that is found in this novel. Cornelia is a grown-up, with a previous life that has left her with children, a touch that is rarely found in these sort of novels. She also has another rare trait -- a sense of humor, and there are several scenes in the novel that are laugh-out-loud funny. Harry is a little too perfect, always managing to show up at just the right moment with hardly a hair out of place, but by the end of the story, there's enough emotional tension going on to overlook that stumbling block. Too, the author doesn't fall into the pit of turning this into yet another book where it's nothing but sexual bouts between the leads, and the plot goes to the wayside. While there are quite a few dangling issues left at the end of the book, it's satisfying enough that it can be read as a stand-alone novel.

The main plot besides the romantic aspect involves a band of French spies trying to get into the house on Cavendish Square to find an object that is hidden there at the begining of the book. For those who might think that this sort of thing is far-fetched and an aristocratic nobleman is working to stop them, the truth may surprise them.

The secondary characters, Aurelia and Liv along with Harry's assistant, Lester, and the children, are fairly well-fleshed out, and provide some lighter touches and help to keep the story a bit more balanced than a constant 'he-said, she-said.' One interesting thread involves Lady Sophie, the desceased previous owner of the house, and the little clues that are scattered throughout the novel that indicate that she may not have been everything that she seemed. I can only hope that the future novels in the series will explore this angle a bit more.

Ms. Feather's writing style is fluid, and clear of anachronisms. Her knowledge of the time-period -- the early nineteenth centure -- is evident in how her characters behave and act. Regency society was one of those where reputation was everything and unlike most modern writers, Ms. Feather puts it to good use in the story.

Summing up, it's a good novel of this type, and better than most to be found in this genre. One of the best parts about this writer is that she works to maintain her consistancy of writing good stories that provide an evening's entertainment. I will continue to look for her forthcoming novels in her Cavendish Square series, as yet unnamed.

4 out of 5 stars The Incomparable Jane Feather's A Wicked Gentleman.......2007-04-10

Jane Feather's writing style cannot be compared...I can only describe it as "magical"! Her love scenes are so beautifully descritive and the passion inside the bedroom is enhanced and heightened by the passionate romance outside the bedroom.
She describes things so beautifully and in such a sophisticated way that some of her sentences take my breath away. I have to re-read them 2 and 3 times.
Ms. Feather writes about history in such an interesting way that it seems vital to the storyline. In many of other historical romances, the history is just boring...not so with Ms, Feather.
I cannot say enough about her novels, with the exception of very few, she is a superb top shelf author.
The Wicked Gentleman has a hero to die for and a heorine who matches him. I enjoyed them immensely and cannot wait for Liv and Aurelia's stories!

4 out of 5 stars Meet Stephanie Plum's Ancestress & Enjoy A Fun Romance Too!.......2005-08-31

Long before author Janet Evanovich turned Stephanie Plum, bounty hunter extraordinaire, loose on the citizens of Trenton, NJ, she wrote 12 short romance novels, all screwball comedies with happy endings, some involving just a tad of mystery/suspense. These small treats, (like a piece of good chocolate, they lift your spirits), were published by the Loveswept line between the years 1988 and 1992. I have read and enjoyed them all - but then I love almost everything Ms. Evanovich writes. "Ivan Takes A Wife" is one of my favorites.

Oddly enough, "Ivan Takes A Wife's" heroine is named Stephanie too, Stephanie Lowe, and could very well be the ancestress of Ms. Plum. Like Stephanie P., Stephanie L. is bright, witty, sexy, and in law enforcement....a former a cop. When she graduated from the Academy she looked all of sixteen, perfect to work undercover as a narc at a high school. She had personal reasons for wanting to help the kids to stay off drugs, and to put the pushers away for a long time. When she was identified by the bad guys as a cop and almost killed, she resigned from the force, burnt out. She wanted a change of pace, scenery and local culture, so she moved a good distance away from New Jersey.

Her dream home is in Camden, Maine, overlooking the ocean. Stephanie plans to turn it into a B&B for the tourists who flock to the area each year for the Windjammer cruises, as well as to spend time on the gorgeous Maine coast and offshore islands. She purchases the house, called Haben, from schooner Captain Ivan Rassmussen, a descendant of pirates. His family had lived at Haben for generations. After the sale is completed, she discovers that the toilet is dysfunctional. It leaks so bad that the bathroom floor collapses and falls into the kitchen and downstairs bathroom. The bathroom mirrors go the way of the floor. A new heater is needed desperately before the cold sets in, and the wooden porch floor is rotten. Stephanie, with limited funds, feels she has been swindled by Ivan, And the final straw, his ancient Aunt Tess, long departed from this world, (at least physically), haunts the widow's walk. Fortunately for Ivan, the ghost will only speak to women.

Stephanie's cousin Lucy, the chef on the "Josiah T. Savage," the Captain's schooner, is engaged to a plumber. The couple plan to take a week off to wed and enjoy a short honeymoon. Lucy promises Stephanie that if she will take her place as cook on Ivan's 100 year-old ship for this one week, and feed the handsome Captain, a confirmed bachelor, the crew and passengers, she will have her new husband install the toilet. Although our protagonist barely knows how to boil water, she desperately needs an indoor john. As she steps onboard the "Savage" and greets Ivan, something happens to both of them that never surfaced during the house signing. Sparks fly!! Bigtime! Ivan the Terrible finds the temperature rising rapidly. And Steph, although a virgin, really feels the heat!

The sea trip with passengers is a blast. The kitchen is only a mega disaster for a day or two. The dialogue is fast, furious and delightful. Ms. Evanovich's outrageous humor will be immediately recognizable to fans of the Stephanie Plum series. It is also fun to glimpse prototypes for her future characters.

This is a short, simple, well-written romance - wonderfully entertaining fluff. It's the perfect read for a plane trip or a dismal weekend afternoon. I enjoyed! Hope you do too!

3 out of 5 stars Early Evanovich is a charmer.......2000-04-25

Janet Evanovich is better known for her immensely popular, offbeat series of Stephanie Plum novels (beginning with "One For the Money"). Ms Evanovich broke into the business by writing romance novels, and "Ivan Takes a Wife" is not only a charming example of this genre, but an indication of where the character of Stephanie might have originated. For the Stephanie of this novel is not a fragile, gentle flower but a retired cop with a habit of falling (off hillsides, roofs, and boats) and an sassy attitude. Janet includes trademarks her fans will recognize and appreciate, from the steamy sexual situations to the offbeat, delightful supporting characters, and even throws in a bit of a mystery to keep the story moving along. If you have the good fortune to find this novel, enjoy it!

5 stars-- duke, ton, earls, but her books are easy to read, you don't get lost in the language. it makes you wish you lived in that era. her books are the best i have ever read.

5 out of 5 stars WOW! This is a keeper!.......2007-05-11

Not many books have, for me, been so emotionally draining. In the beginning of the book, while reading in bed at night the night before last, I had a hard time keeping my laughter to myself so that I wouldn't wake my husband. Last night, I got so lost in it, I couldn't put it down. In the end I had to leave the last few chapters till this morning. Maybe it was just because I was so tired after so little sleep, but the last three chapters had me sobbing. I will definitely be reading this one again.

3 out of 5 stars Rich titled English people.......2007-03-19

You have to like to read about the rich, titled, shallow, pointless English society of the 1800's to enjoy this book. True the beginning was good and nobody on the planet would not like the Alex character in the first few chapters, but she becomes boring and shallow pretty quick and ready to forget the 'old' life. I KNOW, I KNOW she WAS sad for a WHOLE year while she diligently worked to be the best little rich girl in London, but... ah, come on.
