5 out of 5 stars A STUNNING ENDING TO A SPECTACULAR SERIES.......2007-09-07

Bryan Davis starts with a great series and does the almost impossible. Each book and episode just keeps getting better. The thrills and tensions just keep being ratcheted up. Every book does the near impossibility of always raising the bar. There is no weak moment or book in the entire series. This finale is a classic example of plotting, pacing, atmosphere, characterization and expanding our knowledge of dragons and myth. A genius is a work here. Don't miss a book, sequel or prequel. AND THERE IS MORE TO COME!!!

3 out of 5 stars Too many cliches.......2007-08-09

I've enjoyed this series as a whole, but there were many elements of the final story that bothered me. Mostly, the overuse of the death/resurrection plot point. The savior-like death and resurrection of a character is a common point of fantasy books, and a Christian fantasy book has a little more reason to use that plot device, but this series has used it time and time again. And I felt like when a character actually died at the end, it was a token death. And also, though Bonnie is supposed to be an inspirational character, and in previous books, she's had her own struggles and trials, I felt like in this concluding book and in the third one, she was a Mary Sue, or a character who is too perfect.

The way that the author incorporates the mythical and the inspirational is, as in the other books, very satisfying. There was a lot I liked about the book. But I found myself reading faster and faster in order to just be done, not because I was so enthralled. Also, I got really really tired of all of the prophecies written in fairly mediocre verse.

Would I still recommend the book? Yes, but not to everyone. This book and series is mostly good for a lighter read, even with its weightier themes.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Series.......2007-07-08

Dragon's in our Midst and Bryan Davis' new series, Oracles of Fire, is simply amazing. All the books in both series have kept my attention both by their invigorating plots and characters. I would highly recommend this to anyone that is looking for a good read.

5 out of 5 stars Christian values in a dragon story.......2007-03-19

My daughter reads this series, and she is 13/14. She enjoys it and has told me of the Christian elements present, and I approve of them. For children who enjoy sci-fi/dragon fantasy stories, this one has no message that 'magic is good', but rather subservience to a supreme God. I recommend this author and this series.

4 out of 5 stars Tears of a Dragon(Dragons in Our Midst, Volume 4).......2007-01-12

Well written Christian fantasy that takes away the idea that dragons are evil. After having read the last 3 volumes by Bryan Davis I needed to find a source to order the last book in this series and decided to order through Amazon which friends have raved about. So my review is about them as well. I received the book fast and in excellent condition. With that out of the way, the book has many twists and turns that make it different from other fantasy novels on dragons not which is least that dragons become human to dragons to people again. Dragons in Our Midst tantalizes the reader in it's way of making you guess what will happen next to our heros as well as our minior heros, but stays on the level of the teen/young adult's level. I am not a young adult but enjoy a good fantasy and this was on the scale of Lord of the Rings and Narnia a fairly suspenseful but easy story that young folks would enjoy but adults can get a few days of enjoyment from reality as well. It was more toward the Narnia level of read. It is safe for the parents who don't want their children to read wordly fantasy with all it contains and I would recommend it for those who are homeschooling and want to keep their children's minds from experimenting too far from morality and purity.

4 out of 5 stars AMAZING illustrations, good telling..........2007-07-08

I am extremely picky when it comes to illustrations and this book makes it to my top ten list. To give you an idea of my taste -- others in the top ten include "In the Night Kitchen" and "Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs". I think detailed illustrations really capture a child's imagination and wow, does this book have detail! You will find something new with each reading. So, for illustration aficionados this book is a must have!

Now, for the content...I'll admit it seems a bit dense for a children's book, but when you consider the source (Edmund Spencer's "The Faerie Queen") it's not really surprising. In the end I think I would have been disappointed with a watered down version to go along with the superb illustrations. Even very young children will be enchanted by the illustrations. I have read it often to my three year old daughter and she remains silently captivated for the entire reading.

5 out of 5 stars Best Book Ever!.......2007-01-30

I bought this book for my 9 year old homeschooled son as a fun addition to his medieval history studies. He loved this book!

My son would like to add, "Great pictures! I understood everything as if it were a movie. I recommend it to everybody who likes medieval stuff!!!!!"

5 out of 5 stars Lovely book.......2006-12-26

Our two grandsons love this book (ages 4 and 5) - plenty of knightly valor, and lovely illustrations. Not too gory slaying of a dragon! (That's the most admired page!) One grandson took it to school as his favorite book.

5 out of 5 stars My three year old's favorite!!.......2006-12-20

My three year old son knows this book by heart, I'm sure he imagines himself the dragon-slayer and winning the heart of the lovely Una.

5 out of 5 stars Saint George and the Dragon.......2006-11-14

My six year old son (okay, six and three quarters) and I enjoy this story. It is a bit longer than most children's books - sometimes we require two bedtimes to read through it. It is, however, one of the more accurate and authentic tellings of the story of Saint George and the Dragon - includes the Dragon's tail and paw being chopped off (may not be appropriate for younger or more sensitive kids). The illustrations are incredible - some of the background characters actually "look" toward the reader(s). My son enjoys playing "I Spy" with the details of the illustrations. I highly recommend this to anyone searching for an accurate telling of this tale.

5 out of 5 stars A GREAT SEQUEL - A SERIES FOR ALL AGES.......2007-06-26

Sometimes a sequel just isn't as good as the first book in a series. THIS ONE IS EVERY BIT AS EXCITING AS THE FIRST! Davis uses a great HOOK: IS BONNIE'S MOTHER ALIVE? The reader also meets Bonnie's father. Pacing, Action, Atmosphere, Characterisation, Setting, and especially Motives and Motivation are at the highest level of excellence as the best Thrillers being written today. I'm a middle aged adult; not a teen and I find This Series and author cross all age barriers. Do yourself a favor and try this series. The author also does the King Arthur, Merlin and Excalibur legends to a turn and with new twists! I've lent volume one to a few friends (adults who love either scifi or thrillers) and they have become hooked fans of both the author, the series and the return to legends and dragons. DON'T MISS THIS SERIES.

4 out of 5 stars It was good I want to see what happens next!.......2007-04-16

It was a good book i want to read the next one (but is devin really dead or will he come back?)in the saga. But the fighting or adventure didn't really happen all that much like in the first book.

5 out of 5 stars this book is the best!.......2006-06-06

The entire series of Dragons in our Midst is the best series that I have ever read. The Candlestone improves on its prequel, Raising Dragons, with more adventure and action than the first book. If you are considering buying this book, then do buy it, along with all the rest of the series. Be sure to read it.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2006-05-05

Though RAISING DRAGONS was perhaps a bit of a predictable read, the CANDLESTONE jumped right out at me, and pulled me into the series. From start to finish, things continued lining up from the first book and slowly became even more unpredictable than I've ever expected to see from any author.

It's well written, smooth and with a clarity that makes one KNOW the characters, this is a book that any fan of good, clean fantasy should not skip out on. Particularly if you're looking for something that's just a bit different from the typical, just a bit extreme enough to be readable, and just creative enough to border on cutting edge vs the everyday fantasy heroes.

5 out of 5 stars LOVE THESE BOOKS!.......2006-04-27

ZOMGZ! I LOVE THESE BOOKS SO MUCH!

Seriously, these books are so amazing, and I have such a huge crush on Bonnie. Just look at the cover! SHE IS SO BEAUTIFUL! OMG! I would totally marry her IRL! I don't even care if she has dragon wings! She is so, so, so beautiful and just an amazing person who lives her life through Christ in every way. WOW! READ THESE BOOKS! YOU WILL LOVE HER TOO!

5 out of 5 stars I loved this book!.......2007-09-24

OK, this book is my absolute favorite! Bryan Davis has done a great job on this one! I like how it incoperates a little bit of religion in there too, but not as much as it's sequels, The Candlestone, Circles of Seven, and Tears of a Dragon. And remember those names, because after you read this book, it pulls you in! What it's about is two teens who are part dragons and part human. Well, actually both are fully dragon and human, but that can get confusing. The book is just one of those I-don't-care-if-it's-time-for-dinner-I'm-not-putting-this-book-down-and-you-can't-make-me kind of book. Great for anyone who is intersted in fantasy and adventure. And the second book in the series (The Candlestone) has a little bit for science fiction readers too. I mean, it is almost impossible to not like this book if you enjoy reading. Oh, and once you get into it, go ahead and go to www.dragonsinourmidst.com, where you can read the author's blog and submit stories or art to the fan gallary, or even order Dragons in our Midst appareal. Well, I hope this review convinced you to buy this book, it really is my fave, and in my mind, I like it better than the Harry Potter series, but that's probably just me! Well, enjoy the book!

5 out of 5 stars A Review of Dragons in Our Midst by Wayne Thomas Batson, Author of the Door Within Trilogy.......2007-08-02

You're an adolescent, and you've got issues: pimples, popularity, progress reports--the works. But you have nothing on Billy Bannister. Billy has bad breath--no, not chronic halitosis. More like chronic "pyrotosis." You see, Billy has scorching hot breath. It's so bad and so persistent that kids at school begin calling Billy "Dragon Breath." But could there be more to that than they know? And just what's inside Bonnie's backpack anyway?

Dragons in Our Midst by Bryan Davis is a sensational contemporary fantasy. It's as fun as Disney and as deep as life. Mr. Davis writes in such fine prose, it's nearly poetic. In fact, kids will LOVE reciting the cool rhyming poetry sprinkled throughout.

Do you like Dragons? Are you looking for heroes? Add Dragons in Our Midst to your to-be-read pile and be prepared for late nights of engaging reading.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASSIC START TO A CLASSIC SERIES.......2007-06-07

First off, I'm not usually a fantasy or scifi reader. Thrillers, Murder Mysteries, Books on Music, and even Stephen King are where I find my pleasure reading. While on vacation, the back cover of Part Four - TEARS OF A DRAGON caught my attention. I passed on buying it; but , it wouldn't leave my mind. Second, I'm not a young adult - I'm 58. I finally tracked down the book and bought it and started with Part One - RAISING DRAGONS and I'm glad I did. The author is an expert in Plotting, Characterization, Pacing, Atmosphere, Suspense and especially in getting the reader hooked right away on the premise and believing it. His characters are believable and sympathetic. Do yourself a favor, no matter what your age, and give this series and this author a try! He is right up there with Dan Brown, Jeffrey Deaver and Peter Lovesey for plotting, suspense and pacing. A TRUE FIND!

5 out of 5 stars Unique premise. Surprisingly engaging........2007-06-05

There are few books that get me to read them consistently many nights in a row. The first to EVER do that was the 3rd Harry Potter. This book is probably the fourth to do so, and more intensely then recent ones.

Anyway, as cheesy as the premise may sound from simply reading summaries of it, it's actually rather cool. Two kids (unrelated) find out their ancestors were dragons. In fact, the boy's father is a dragon in human form (I'm not spoiling anything; that's in the summary). Of course, they kinda find this out through the appearance of certain dragon related abilities first. The boy starts to develop fire-breathing and the girl has wings. They eventually start to get hunted by some crazed modern-day dragon slayer who finds out about them.

Early on the plot starts to tie into Arthurian legend (as in King Arthur), and this connection is done quite well. There's also some tie-in's with the Bible, though that aspect is a bit over-the-top and would make Bible scholars shake their heads and groan at the thought of using a fictitious interpretation of some passages.

Can't say much more without spoiling the plot. If any of you hate cliffhangers, you'll be happy to know this book ends well enough. Just bear in mind there are three sequels that may call to your attention if you like this one enough. Speaking of which, I should probably order those some time.

5 out of 5 stars Not a ABC Book.......2007-05-18

This is Homeschool Mom's daughter, I am 14.
I LOVED this book and the ones after it. It is not an ABC (Already Been Chewed) Book. Christains and non-Christians will enjoy it immensly. Every page is Packed with non stop adventure and mystery. Very fast moving and yet unsolved mysteries hang in the air, ones that started hundreds of years before the characters were born. Well plotted and Extremly well developed. Characters are deep and beleivable. The Conflict is REAL. The Danger is REAL. I never ever had any trouble with the things in this book. The relationships that build are deep and again Real. This is a book no one should miss.

5 out of 5 stars A Language-Rich Picture Book.......2007-06-13

As a teacher, I love Tomie De Paola's books because there is so much hidden in the text. This book is a wonderful book for younger children to build language. The written text is fairly straightforward and great for pre-readers ( 3 to 4 year olds) because they will learn/memorise it quickly enough. But the beauty is in the visual text - there is so much for the young child to tell you about, and develop the narrative themselves using the pictures. It allows the child to predict, tell events and develop the dialogue between the knight and the dragon themselves. And aside from that, it is a gorgeous and sweet tale of friendship.

Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Reading a Book 75 Times in a Week.......2007-02-14

We got this book out of the library, and my 18 month old daughter cannot get enough. We read it to her three times a day, two or three times in a row. So I've read a lot of "The Knight and the Dragon" recently.

I like it.

Like "Pancakes for Breakfast," this is a book about trying to do something that you read about in a book and being alternately proud and frustrated by the task. It breaks down the problem of fighting dragons into steps (as well as the problem of fighting knights) and shows the heroes practicing, practicing, practicing. When setbacks happen, our heroes overcome either through persistence or creativity.

The simple pictures give my daughter the most pleasure, I think, but she enjoys the story, too. She especially likes it when the knight and dragon both fall down. And she likes to point out the librarian character.

4 out of 5 stars Implication by Pictures.......2007-01-14

The interesting thing about this book is that its plot is resolved by a drawing instead of words. In fact, towards the end, the book seems to do away with words altogether and shows everything that happens with pictures only. Hardcore writers may not approve of this method. A princess appears out of nowhere to give both the dragon and the knight helpful books, and that's how the story ends.

I liked the colored-pencil-esque drawings, especially of the dragon making evil faces in the mirror. Gave me a laugh or two.

4 out of 5 stars Great Picture Book.......2006-11-28

We bought this book for our boys last Christmas and I love it. It has few words and this gives us the chance to discuss different themes depending on what they need to hear. I especially appreciate that it shows the characters practicing their skills - being bad at first and then doing well. My guys need that kind of message. I also like the ending theme that working together is better than fighting. It's not a book we read every night but it is one we re-visit periodically and get to enjoy new things with it. A great add to your library.

1 out of 5 stars The highlight: The dragon.......2006-06-17

My 2-year-old nephew is really into dragons right now, and this is one of the only books I could find that has a dragon as the main character. This is a picture book, with very few words. And I thought the ending was very strange.

As the mother of a young daughter, I am always aware of how hard I must work to ensure that she sees herself as a person and not an object. I absolutely love how this book turns convention upside down and how Jane is true to herself even when everyone else--her parents included--is trying to tell her to conform. This book served as an excellent introduction to a brief discussion with my daughter as to how she can be anything she wants to be, no matter what others tell her.

5 out of 5 stars Love having a female hero.......2007-06-11

My two and a half year old does not watch much TV but she loves Jane and the Dragon on Saturdays (she also likes Jacob Two Two and we have ordered those books as well). She was very excited when she saw the books as well. In a time when TV execs could not allow Dora to be on top (by giving Diego his own show) it is nice to have a female lead that is strong and brave but also sometimes makes mistakes and learns from them.

The stories are interesting enough for older kids too.

5 out of 5 stars Jane and the Dragon.......2007-01-16

This is such a special and unique book. It has a great message, especially for girls. It challenges stereotypes and convention in such a sweet way. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Far Better than the Paperbag Princess!.......2005-07-01

This fabulous, feminist tale throws sexist attitudes on their backside. For all people who dare to live the unexpected life, this book is an inspiration, validation and absolute delight.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Superb.......2004-10-22

Jane is a wonderful role model for young girls and boys alike. Her spirit makes her soar well past what is "expected of her" and allows her to achieve her dreams. She helps others achieve their dreams as well. The book is well written. The illustrations are beautiful. This was my favourite bedtime book to read to my daughter. When she put away her children's books many years ago, this one stayed on her shelf. I recommend this book wholeheartedly.

5 out of 5 stars Great Book for Older People.......2006-07-02

I bought this book for my daughter who is 4. This book is great but would recommend for a 7 or 8 year old instead. For younger kids I would recommend the I Can Draw series.

5 out of 5 stars Great introduction to drawing people and more.......2004-07-07

This book is a great start to teach young artists-- 1 grader and higher-- to draw people. It teaches kids to sketch, i.e. draw lightly first. The step-by-step instruction is very clear.

Not only is it a great book for introducing drawing of knights and castles, the author apparent is also fluent in the vocabulary of this yester-year theme. My first grader and I get to know the names of different weapons, name of different parts of the castles and the names of "things" people wear. A double treat!

4 out of 5 stars Knight for a day .......2005-10-04

Knight for a day was funny in small differnt parts. A famouse guy from DSA (dragon slayer academy) will come his name is sir lancelct. He came to show the DSA boys how a knight should dress up and, fight. Erica dosent like sir lancelct so when was running Erica put her foot out she tript him. He is also famous for his birthmark on his right heel that is shape like a sord. At the end they tell sir lancelot to leave.
I liked this book because it is a adveture, some comedy, and in there other Dragon Slayers Academy is more of action. In some way it is wierd because they have the wierdest names like wiglaf or baldrick. This was just book number five of ten.

5 out of 5 stars Son couldn't get enough of it........2004-05-12

This is a great book from a great series. My 9 year old son loves them. He took the books every time we went on a road trip, read them before bed, he was even reading them instead of watching afterschool cartoons! They are well written and funny.

5 out of 5 stars Knight for a day.......2004-02-26

Knight for a Day was a really good book , one of my favorite parts was the weapons class with Master X . I would recomend this book if you like humor.

4 out of 5 stars Tom's Review.......2001-11-26

I thought this was a great book! I especially enjoyed the part when Master X was going to cut off Knuckle and Squint Squeaky's heads!! Of course this did not really happen...

5 out of 5 stars Inspired a School to Read.......2001-10-30

My son and I discovered this whole series of books when he was a first grader...perfect for him to read as a second grader now. In the spirit of Harry Potter and the Hobbit but not so complex that kid's lose the story line. Full of jokes and adventure, I cannot recommend these any more strongly for the 7 to 10 age group (depending on reading ability). We've had two impressive endorsements:

When we first began reading about Wiglaf, it was on a plane to Colorado. As I read to my son, I realized that other children were tuning in to the story. Several parents asked for the book titles and the author when we landed.

Also, late last year I read books 1-3 for a first grade class and have since read to the second grade. The library has been unable to keep two full sets in stock and the teachers have purchased their own sets. It has taken reading by storm as boys and girls strive to finish the series.

Oh yeah, and adults will get a private chuckle out of the humor and wordplay from time to time.

4 out of 5 stars Fun books--great for boys and girls.......2007-01-10

We've been reading this series to our 6-year-old son, and he just loves them. They read quickly, and they have enough "knight" talk to keep the boys interested and enough silly humor to keep my older girls laughing. My kids particularly love Daisy, the pig who speaks Pig Latin. Our only complaint might be that, in each book, McMullan has to once again "explain" the characters--why the pig speaks Pig Latin and why Eric is really Erica. I think readers would most likely start at the beginning of this series, so why explain things over and over?

5 out of 5 stars Awesome Book!.......2000-06-17

Too hot to play outside? Not allowed to watch anymore t.v.? No problem, grab a Dragon Slayers' Academy book and join an adventure of a lifetime! I'm eight years old and I LOVE these books!

In Sir Lancelot Where are You? Wiglaf, Erica nad Angus set off on an adventure to save Sir Lancelot from the evil Morgana le Fay. Along the way Wiglaf and his pals find a new friend, lots of excitement and some laughs.

I know that you will enjoy this book as much as I did. I would give the book eight to ten stars if I could.

5 out of 5 stars Baynton does it again.......2007-07-23

Once again, Baynton has written a lovely, wonderful twist on your standard fairy tale. His spunky, likable heroine Jane is back in a new adventure that has some gentle lessons for young men and ladies: namely that acting in anger can cause harm to others and that it's important to take responsibility for one's own actions. Baynton teaches these lessons in a way that is not at all preachy and that is, rather, engaging and lively. His illustrations are awash with beautiful colors and are every bit as attention getting as the story itself. I highly recommend both this book and Jane and the Dragon and particularly for girls. It's wonderful to see books in which a girl is strong and remains true to herself.
