Margaret, Australia.......2000-06-14
I found this book, so boring and predictable. The charactors were so unbelievable that I don't know why I continued reading the book. The plot, was not too bad, but if you can believe a man who is bashed, stabbed then spends hours searching and tracking his wife is then able to satisfy his wife sexually etc , etc, then I would like to meet this superman. The book spent too much time in sexual writings, which doesn't even fire the imagination. Just say this book is a waste of good reading time, as this is the first book of hers that I have read, I would have second thoughts in ever choosing another of her books
Wow! Watch out for this book!.......2000-05-26
Phew, if your going to read this book you had better turn the pages with oven mitts and keep a fire extinguisher nearby because it is HOT STUFF! At first when I started reading this book I thought the author gave away to much of the characters' background in the beginning, but I was blessedly wrong! There were many past secrets and feelings that I didn't even expect! The internal confilct is great too, (from a writers point of view now)- the hero has problems opening up because he wants to protect the heroine and he doesn't think he can because love will make him vunerable...*sigh*. Needless to say the love scenes were HOT! My only complaint was that a few cheezy moments during the love scenes, but hey, this romance! Still, you might want think twice before lendin' this book to your grandmam.

Kati reading everything: Aurora and Julian make a perfect couple. Two people who long for adventure and won't conform to what society wants are the best characters of all. As the couple search for the Black Diamond in a desperate attempt to clear up the past, this hastily married couple fall in love and learn there is more to life than an adventure. You will fall in love with temptation and whirlwind romance. Andrea is a wonderful writter who has beaten her last book by a hundred stars. I own all her books and think that this is definitly her best. Way to go Andrea!!! You've done yoursellf proud this time!! I can't wait for more of your books to come out.
Great beginning unfulfilling ending........1998-09-29
I have read 4 of Ms. Kane's books and they have been great all as far as I am concerned five stars this one is my exception because the book captivates you from the very beginning but the end somehow is lacking. Oh please don't get me wrong the romance as always is great no problems or disappointments in that department but for an author that gives so much more in her writting Ms. Kane, as far as I am concerned left me wondering the experience Aurora and Julian in returning the diamond. Or at the very least a more profound explanation of how it was returned.

Black Baseball's Best's Beginnings.......2006-11-28
Black Diamond by Patricia C. McKissack and Fredrick McKissack, Jr
It's mainly a book about baseball, but it tells you all about how baseball affected black's rights and treatments. You learn about the ways that fans and other players mistreated black players, even on their own team! They were somehow able to beat racism, and get black players into Major League Baseball. That lead to more black respect and freedom, eventually helping give blacks as much freedom as everyone else. I recommend this book to anyone who likes baseball and learning about black history. One of the best parts is that it is never, at any point, boring. This is also a great book for anyone 10 to 14 years old that likes learning about our country's history, or baseball's history. I completely recommend it.
Black Diamond.......2002-11-22
My book is about baseball. I read tha the baseball starte at 1820's, and when it start only white player weard allow to play it but the blaack players could not play baseball with white players because they weard been raises with them. A lot of cuban people weard playing with whith people with no problem. The white people hate the black people because they weard all different colors. The black people made a team that was call the Negro Baseball League, and there was the American Baseball League. the black people wanted to play in the white league they had to do a lot of stuff to get into the white leage wich was realy hard. They had to go alldoway to cuba to change their names and their social security and everything else they had to do to get to the american league. The book is preaty sad and happy at the same time.
Baseball, America, and racism........2001-03-08
The story of race relations in American history is one of lost opportunity. This concise history of the Negro Baseball Leagues for young adult readers illustrates this basic point. The book discusses the names, dates, and circumstances of the major figures and events of the flip side of American baseball history. Legendary names such as Josh Gibson, "Cool Papa" Bell, and Satchel Page are just a few of the remarkable players who made important contributions to the game. Among others, they played for teams with names such as The Homestead Grays, The St. Louis Stars, and The Kansas City Monarchs. The book also tells the story of owners and managers, such names as Negro National League founder Rube Foster and the tough as nails woman owner of the Newark Eagles, Effa Manley spring to mind. The book also briefly explains how the infamous Jim Crow tradition brought about the Negro Baseball saga. In 1947, major league baseball was sucessfully integrated and that spelled the doom of the Negro Baseball leagues. The text includes an ample number of photographs. To assist younger readers, and for easy reference purposes, a player profile and time line section is provided at the back of the book. Underlying the historical text, there is the theme that segregated baseball mirrored the nagging problem of racism in America. A sense of fair play and even-handed justice demands that talent, skill, and just plain style should be celebrated, regardless of race. To do otherwise cheats everybody of a rewarding experience. Imagine if the great players of the Negro Baseball Leagues had the chance to play (with or against) the great players of the major leagues. Consider the void created by lost opportunity. ;-)

not bad at all.......2007-03-20
the basic plot of this story is our heroine, courtney, is rescued by the hero, slayde, after almost being killed. the story goes on to reveal that there is a plot against slayde and his family that revolves around a curse.
the story isn't bad at all. i like the hero and heroine, although slayde seems EXTREMELY overbearing towards his sister. however, it apparently isn't unjustified, as she is made out to be a flighty thing for the most part. i like both courtney and slayde, although sometimes courtney seemed a little too soft or something to me. however, she is very smart, and not hesitant to fight for what she wants. slayde also has no problem fighting for what he wants, and is an enjoyable character.
all in all, it was a good read for some reason that i just can't articulate. definately a book to pick up if you have the time, as are most of kane's books. enjoy :)
Refreshing.......2000-10-20
Uusually I rely heavily on the reviews of others before I buy a book. I found this book interesting and am anxious to read Auora's story.
I've read hundreds of romance novels and it was nice not to have to wait until the end of the book before the couple admits to loving each other. Yes it was a little slow at times but I still enjoyed it and would recommend it.
Very interesting book. Slow in some places........1999-07-17
I have read this book several times and I find my self caught up in the mysetry and romance every time.

A memorable story.......2006-07-08
I read this book a few years ago and loved it. The story of the Texas and Pacific Coal and Oil company seems so typically American. From the crooked Yankee come South who recognizes the coal that was a nuisance to the farmer scratching out a living, the New York financiers who put the enterprise on a secure financial foundation and did very well by themselves in the process, the immigrant miners, prosperous company town, self-taught geololgist who opened up the Ranger oil field, a gas-pump juckey who earned a raise in the midst of the depression selling lube jobs and treating his wife to a mid-week hamburger, the names which dot Fort Worth buildings and streets, this book covers and links up an America and Texas from frontier to the outlines of its present corporate complexity.
Book Description
John Hardin is a desperate man. When a train carrying official US currency paper explodes in his town, he's the prodigious Black Diamond Detective Agency's sole suspect. John is innocent, but his wife is missing, his old friends are coming back to haunt him--with guns and explosives--and he's on the run through rural Missouri.
THE BLACK DIAMOND DETECTIVE AGENCY is based on the historical journals of Arthur James Quindlen, the agency's founder. Adapted and illustrated with watercolor art by Eddie Campbell, this graphic novel brings a new perspective to that time in America when small farmers were the backbone of the country, graft was rampant, and railroads thundered through western towns.
Book Description
Awarded annually since 1987, the Theodore Ward Prize recognizes the outstanding individual accomplishments of African American playwrights, as well as their growing importance to the shape and direction of American drama in our time. This collection, edited by a director and educator who has been affiliated with the contest for fifteen of its seventeen years, showcases a selection of the award-winning plays and offers a rich and varied view of the best of two decades of evolving African American drama.
These seven plays, which span the Ward Prize's history, represent a wide range of talents, experience, and perspectives brought to bear on diverse themes, from a unique moment in the history of baseball's Negro League to a working-class couple contending with a neighborhood bully; from a child's memories of negotiating desegregation to coming of age amidst the ravages of racism, child abuse, and AIDS. By turns poetic and moving, brave and rousing, uproarious and unsettling, these works written by established and emerging playwrights allow actors, directors, theatergoers, and readers to sample the multifarious dramatic experience being limned by African American playwrights today.

Highly recommended for any theater library.......2005-08-24
Since the early part of the 20th century, Chicago has been a national leader in the production of black theater. There are currently six black companies, and black productions are regularly featured at the three Tony Award-winning regional theater companies.
Theodore Ward (1902 - 1983) mentored and encouraged many aspiring dramatists in Chicago from 1968 until his death. To honor Ward, and to aid black playwrights in the development and production of scripts, Columbia College Chicago established the Theodore Ward Prize for African American Playwriting in 1985. Only full-length plays addressing the African American are considered, and the playwright must be of African American descent. Since one of the goals is to uncover and identify new works, scripts which have received professional production are not eligible.
This anthology of prize-winning plays is the first in a series to be published every three years. Compiled and edited by Chuck Smith (currently Resident Director at Chicago's Goodman Theater, and affiliated with the prize for fifteen years) it presents seven plays spanning nearly two decades, with diverse subject matter and treatments. Christopher Moore's "The Last Season" (First Prize 1987-88) immerses us in the final days of the Negro Leagues. The most recent offering, Shepsu Aakhu's "Kiwi Black" ( First Prize 2001-02) tells the story of adolescent son coming of age under the watchful eye of a tough-love father.
But my synopses can't possibly do these scripts justice. Highly recommended for any theater library!
Great African American Plays.......2005-04-30
This is a good book to have in your theater library (especially for black actors/thespians). There are some great contemporary pieces and monologues (especially for Black men). I have always been supportive of The Theodore Award winning plays. The characters are real and the language is rich. The writing is great. Most of the plays are short, so these plays would be good for a burgeoning African American theater company or ensemble to produce.

To look back at the dawning of Dwight Gooden's career is to see not just potential but also brilliance. Gooden roared onto the scene, a quiet teenage marvel with a loud adult arm, stringing together a pair of inaugural seasons with the Mets--Rookie of the Year in '84, Cy Young Award in '85--that burst at the seams of his unhittable heater. New pages were prepped for the record books. But those pages were never filled in.
That Gooden self-imploded on a volatile cocktail of drugs and alcohol certainly isn't news. What is news is that his smart memoir goes beyond some smart analysis of the pitcher's craft to candidly dive into the wreck Gooden created for himself. Instead of mining for excuses, Gooden resurfaces with the requisite self-awareness--"The worst part about being an addict," he admits, "is that you lie all the time"--to probe the great expectations placed on him, the early triumphs and the way success went to his head, the pressures of New York and its nightlife, his sometimes difficult relationships with teammates, his personal inferno and its repercussions, his suspensions, his humiliations, his addiction treatments, and his comeback. Gooden made a splendid name for himself throwing heat; here, he gracefully humbles himself in a cautionary tale that displays the perspective and maturity that's required to be able to take the heat. --Jeff Silverman
Book Description
Dwight Gooden's early years with the New York Mets were golden ( he was the youngest winner of the Cy Young Award in baseball history and led the New York Mets to one of the most dramatic World Series victories in 1986. Dwight Gooden ( a.k.a. Doc or simply Dr. K ( had a fastball that hitters just could not beat. But Gooden's fall was as quick and dramatic as his rise. By 1994 he had twice been suspended from the league for drug abuse, plunging him into a vicious cycle that threatened his career and, ultimately, his life.
Today, Dwight Gooden is back in the big leagues. Heat captures Gooden's poignant road to recovery, and how it culminated in his second World Series ring with the New York Yankees in 1996, and offers a behind-the-scenes look at the Yankees club. During his fourteen years in the big leagues, Dwight Gooden has seen plenty. Heat brings to life the glorious world championship baseball through the eyes of one of its most popular and talented stars.

bubba jr.......2005-06-11
wow,
what a book!
i love doc, growing up i coppied him,i will admit it.
my problem was i had a 84 mile per hr fastball that in canada was not good enouph to even get a look.
i was fortunate,in that i found fame in another sport called curling.i am a huge drinker but have never tried drugs,i do have money but the thought of drugs never interested me,thank god!0n the world curling tour i have had plenty of oppertunity to go astray and have, with booze on many occasion.i often wonder what could have became of me if a scout by the name of itchy jones (cin reds)said at 16 yrs your fastball isnt good enouph, can you backcatch. i guess what i am trying to say that doc is a study of too much too young just as i was.my curling fame came at 16 and 17,then again when i was 28-29.this story does hit home and i would reccomend it completely to young and old alike.nice job bob, look forward to reading your next. please excuse the grammar ha ha i wrote this late.
THE GOODEN WE DID NOT KNOW.......2004-08-18
I PICKED UP THE BOOK ON FRIDAY AND FINISHED IT SUNDAY. THE BOOK WAS AN EASY READ. I, LIKE SO MANY OTHERS, WAS IN PURE AWE OF THE POWER AN POTENTIAL DWIGHT GOODEN HAD. I WATCHED HIM IN MY LATTER TEENAGE YEARS AND WANTED TO THROW JUST LIKE HIM. I HAD NO IDEA THE YOUNG MAN FACED SO MANY DEMONS. UNFORTUANATELY, DRUG ABUSE IS PREVAILENT IN OUR SOCIETY AND THE SPORTS WE ADMIRE ARE NOT SACRED. CONGRATUATIONS TO GOODEN FOR DEALING WITH HIS ADDICTION IN SUCH AN OPEN MANNER AS HE SHARED IT WITH US IN HIS BOOK, "HEAT."
"HEAT" WAS AN EYE OPENER AND HOPEFULLY WILL HELP OTHER PEOPLE STRUGGLING WITH THEIR DEMONS. "HEAT" ALSO SHOWED THE EFFECTS DURG ABUSE PLACED ON GOODEN'S LOVED ONES AND HIS CAREER. MOST IMPORTANTLY, "HEAT" SHOWS THE DAMAGES AN ADDICT PLACES ON HIS OR HER SELF AS THEY ENTANGLE THEMSELVES WITH LIES AS GOODEN DID.
Bottoms up, bottoming out.......2001-04-09
HEAT, by Dwight Gooden, has the feel of a between-seasons quickie book. It's still worth picking up, especially if you read between the lines.
Released the winter of 1999, HEAT came out just before Gooden's baseball pitching career went downhill. The previous season at Cleveland had been Gooden's best since 1990. But injuries ruined his 1999 performance and the Indians released him.
In 2000 Houston and Tampa Bay dismissed Doc after he struggled with each team. Later that season Gooden managed to join the Yankees and actually pitched very well, including an incredible July start against the Mets at Shea Stadium.
But age marched ahead and Dwight Gooden did not make the 2001 Yankees. He retired just before the start of the 2001 season.
Covering the Gooden retirement story, the New York papers barely mentioned the pitcher's alcholism, only stressing his cocaine addiction. They should have read HEAT.
Like I said, it's overall a quickie book, not to dismiss its many interesting stories. But what makes HEAT truly worth reading is Dwight Gooden's drinking stories. Cocaine only came into play when he was drinking. The coke is what cost him close to two years' worth of playing time. But alcohol, which Major League Baseball and the newspapers gladly advertise, was the root cause of Gooden's troubles.
Drug abuse can destroy anyone........2000-06-07
This book has it all! It made me laugh it made me cry. Dwight Gooden was honest and he showed how human he really is. Being one of Doc's biggest fans it was a very easy read, the thing that surprised me is that is wasn't really about baseball. It was about family, struggle and overcoming a horrible illness, drug abuse. He was recently released from Tampa Bay and I am hoping he signs with another team soon. He has nothing left to prove I just enjoy watching him pitch.
You oughta be in pitchers.......1999-11-19
In 1995 baseball pitcher Dwight Gooden's no-hit game put himback on top of the baseball world when, just earlier that same season,he looked washed up. A biographical picture was supposed to be made but, as I write this, it has yet to materialize.
HEAT: MY LIFE ON AND OFF THE DIAMOND, Doc's 1998 autobiography, vividly tells about his numerous highs and lows, professional and personal. He skims over the spring training and cab driver controversies that long-time fans will remember but otherwise proves admirably honest about the troubles he brought on himself. The lost opportunities depicted in HEAT saddened me. But Gooden's determination to redeem himself defines the difference between losing and quitting.
And HEAT is not without its share of funny moments and bet-you-didn't-know-that anecdotes. Among the best stories is a prank Doc played on one of the premier sluggers of the game.
While Gooden admits the fears that cost him so much, he is not afraid to name names in HEAT. If Doc finds himself alone in an elevator with ex-manager Dallas Green or ex-teammate Kevin Mitchell, I don't want to be there when the doors open.
It is interesting to note that Gooden does not hold Major League Baseball and his union accountable for helping out-of-control players before they hurt either someone or themselves.
Today (Nov. '99) Dwight Gooden's without a team, having been released after an injury-filled season with the Cleveland Indians. His will to prove himself could land him a chance elsewhere - and with the pathetic state of major league pitching, he could make it to another club and even win some games for them. He's come back from the edge before.
Anyway, a movie of Dwight Gooden's life, should it match the drama conveyed in HEAT, would be as gripping as a no-hitter. For now, read HEAT.

Once you get started, you won't want to stop........1999-01-04
I really enjoyed this book. If you like mysteries then you'll love this book. Anneke, Zoe, and Clare make a great team. This book really draws you in from page one.
An intriging story you won't want to put down........1998-06-08
This is Ms. Holzters best to date. I could have read the story on Cora Brown alone. I wanted more! I hope she keeps writing. This book gives us glimpses of the past interwoven with the present. If you like stories about past mysteries that involve the present, then this one is for you.

beautiful and unusual... in other words, classic Campbell.......2007-07-27
Nothing Campbell does is boring and this is no exception. Like Chris Ware, Campbell employs the utmost creativity with his layouts, the irregularly sized frames in The Black Diamond Detective Agency take the predictable flow of your average comic book and toss it out the window (but it's a good thing) and help move a dense plotline along at a brisk pace. In my opinion this is Campbell's most impressive narrative yet. This is his second book with First Second (The Fate of the Artist, also amazing, was the first) and if you ask me they are a publishing house to watch. They've obviously got a great team over there b/c the books are gorgeously produced and reasonably priced - no easy feat!
