5 out of 5 stars Very cool to have for any Star Trek fan........2007-08-24

This book is excellent. It has everything (and I'm not exagerating here) you need to learn Klingon. The information is well organized and it's easy to learn the basics. And the dictionary is quite large, so it's easy to translate just about anything you can think of. Some English-to-Klingon phrases can get confusing sometimes because the Klingon translation isn't word for word with English. So, if you're a big fan of Star Trek, or you want to learn another language, this book is a must have.

4 out of 5 stars more of a reference than a learning guide........2007-06-03

This book is full of all the grammar and words you'll need to get a basic knowledge of Klingon, but it is all presented more as a reference. I've been through several languages, and while tools such as this are an indispensable aid to learning, they're not always the best way to approach a language. A textbook format learning guide would be better for a beginner, one that chops the vocabulary and grammar up into sections rather than presenting it all at once. But for what it is, it's great.

5 out of 5 stars A Cool Reference To Have For Fans.......2007-04-15

This is a really cool book if you want to know what certain words are in Klingon, but to actually learn the language, it will take a lot of time. This book goes into great detail about how to pronounce words and where they belong in a sentence. This is like learning any other language, and it won't be easy to learn, but it is still really fun to have and read. I'm trying to learn, but it will take a while.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for a trekkie........2007-03-09

This was given as a gift and when opened was met with a "whoop." I guess that says it all.

4 out of 5 stars What a find!.......2007-03-09

Fantastic! I bought 2... one for myself and another for a friend - you always need a practice partner when you decide to start learning a new language! What a hoot! Has great words, expressions and a section on the correct pronunciation of each 'letter'. Also includes a section on syntax and grammar. More than just a 'dictionary'!!

5 out of 5 stars Insider's Look at How TV Shows Get Made.......2003-12-08

This book is a valuable resource for anyone interested in learning about what goes into television production. Stevens and Stevens (who are screenwriters themselves, having written for the "Batman" animated TV series, among other things) go into detail about how "Deep Space Nine" got made. From the show's initial story concept to the inevitable pre-production meetings that followed, story development, and casting: it's all here.

This book also provides some brief but useful information on art design, make-up, directing, editing, how scripts are written (and re-written), and so on. There's even a helpful section at the end of the book which explains who all these people are whose names whiz by in the closing credits of a TV show. (Ever want to know what a property master is or what a scenic artist or grip does? Now you will.)

In short, even if you have no interest in the Star Trek universe whatsoever but you are interested in television production, this book should give you an excellent introduction to the art form.

And, oh, yeah... if you are a Star Trek fan, you'll love this book even more for all the inside trivia it provides on one of the finest (and most underrated) sci-fi shows ever to grace the airwaves.

5 out of 5 stars Behind the scenes of the best written Star Trek series.......2003-01-07

All the behind the scenes technical information in this book. Viewers get to see the original production sketches of the DS9 station in development. Many of the designs were far better than what was eventually used. Overall, it is an entertaining book to read. This show more than the others depicted life on other worlds. They gave Trek fans what they always wanted to see...more alien species and action. Something the Next Generation and Voyager lacked. This series showed us how we all have to work together for peace or all is lost.

4 out of 5 stars One of my favourite books.......2000-06-13

I have had this book now, for about 5 years. I must have read it dozens of times (yup i'm a geek). Its got all the technical stuff on filming the pilot (and beyond) from script development, model making and special effects, to acting and characters (even the story of how Morn came to be!). This book is well written, interesting, and above all a heap of fun. Go ahead and enjoy.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Great first hand account of the initial production of Star Trek........2007-05-22

I felt this book presented a raw Behind the Scenes look at Star Trek the initial series. This book was written after Gene Roddenberry's death so there is a feeling that things that were neatly hidden away have become reported. One thing the book points out is that Gene was by no means the creative genius of Star Trek. The series was the result of many creative people. It was also interesting to note the extent for which Roddenberry would go for royalties, even securing 1/2 of the royalties of the original Star Trek Theme by writing this obscure lyric that would never be performed, nor known about from the original composer. Good stories about Shatner's hairpiece and Roddenberry's falling out with Nimoy. All good reading.

5 out of 5 stars One of My Favorite Things.......2006-02-14

I assume that if you're reading this review, we share in common the belief that Star Trek The Original Series (TOS) was great. Perhaps you bought the complete set of DVD's, like I did. The DVD's are worth it; I consider them one of my most treasured collections. I watch the episodes with my kids, and they love it. TOS is great television, with great writing asking intriguing questions about man's existence. Television writing has devolved since that time.

I've read both "Inside Star Trek" and Yvonne Fern's "Gene Roddenberry, The Last Conversation". Both books look at different angles of Star Trek. Fern's book deals with the philosophical side of Gene Roddenberry, and how he perceived himself. "Inside Star Trek" deals with the business end of the show and all the difficulties encountered in producing it. It's an impressive story, and it's amazing that it ever got produced. Herb Solow and Robert Justman did a fantastic job producing the series.

It's been about 33 years since I was in college. After dinner in the cafeteria, a group of us would congregate to watch Star Trek reruns on the local UHF station. That was a crucial time in the success of Star Trek, when the UHF stations picked it up, because it was otherwise a ratings failure on the networks. If it wasn't for the phenomenal success of Star Trek appearing in reruns on UHF, Star Trek would have been just a vague memory.

I would not recommend this book to new viewers of Star Trek, until they have seen the shows, because the book tends to reveal the magic. Roddenberry is a god to some, but he had "feet of clay". Also, reading about the actors tends to diminish the herioc stature of the characters they protrayed. "Inside Star Trek" shows you all the nuts and bolts of how the thing was put together, and how it fell apart.

Looking back, Star Trek was an incredible achievement.

5 out of 5 stars This is the best non fiction book I have ever read........2004-09-11

This book is a masterpiece of non fiction documentary reporting. It explains what really happned way back when far more clearly and deeply then anything I have ever read, period! We need books like these on almost every subject. This book dispells so many myths its mind boggeling. I encourage everyone to read this book even if they hate star trek, just for an example of good writing.

5 out of 5 stars Priceless for every TOS fan and trekkie.......2004-04-01

I could never have dreamed of the value of this book - I bought it and was amazed! This book is a must-have for every fan of the original series and real trekkie!
The complete background of the beginning of the series, the problems, the costs and the riscs to make the series - all covered within this essential book. It was great fun to read and
extremely interesting. Believe it or not, I had some good laughs too!

Hard to realize how some things have been done and worked out. The real point in trying to catch a copy of it is that the writers were really there at this time! They perfectly know what they are talking about.

Try to get a copy of that book as fast as possible. Out of print for some time now it is very hard to find and I'm afraid I won't sell mine... *g*

5 out of 5 stars VERY IN DEPTH LISTENING!.......2002-11-24

This set of two tapes sete the record straight on alot of myths about Star Trek: TOS. Herb Solow and Robert Justman do a real good job in telling their version of the story. The story of a man, myth, his dream, the team that put the series togther, and of Desilu Studios, and NBC who took a gamble to help fufill the impossible dream. STAR TREK! Kudos to Herb and Robert or RJ for giving an unbaised version of the genesis of a television legend!

4 out of 5 stars Not perfection, but great read!.......2007-06-05

Aside from the fact that Jules appeared to be pale on every other page (for whatever reason), this book and "Evening Star" were my favorites of the 4. I loved the beginning when Saint went back with Jules and defended her name infront of her entire family.

The only other aspect that bothered me was that Saint married Jules, but treated her like some kind of child or nun more like- there was no romance until the end of the book and by that point there was TOO much sex!

However, the story was great. I loved the that other characters from the other series were in the story. Overall awesome writing...kept me intrigued and I can't wait to read "Wild Star"

Book Description

Julie E. Czerneda's 1997 debut, A Thousand Words for Stranger, was the first novel of the Trade Pact Universe-an instant best-seller, Science Fiction Book Club Editor's Choice and Locus Recommended First Novel. Book two, Ties of Power, further established the author's reputation as a master of vivid alien worlds-and had fans clamoring for the third book in the trilogy.

Now comes the final chapter: To Trade the Stars. The stage is set for a possibly cataclysmic confrontation in non-space-and the Speaker for the Clan Council and her human mate are about to find themselves in the heart of the conflict....

Download Description

Jason and Sira--he a human telepath and independent trader, she now Speaker for the Clan Council, as well as Jason's life partner--are trying to forge a life for themselves free of the demands of both Clan and the Drapsk, a race determined to claim Sira as the long-awaited Mystic One. And as if these conflicting demands aren't making life complicated enough, there are at least two other factions with far more dangerous intentions seeking them out. Any hope Sira and Jason have of charting their own course seems likely to vanish forever when they are unexpectedly caught in a conflict between the Drapsk and a mysterious race that dwells in the M'hir. With all of their energies directed toward this crisis, will they become easy prey for those among the Clan and the Humans who are already mobilizing to take advantage of the coming conflict?

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A Planetary Romance?.......2006-10-16

To Trade the Stars (2002) is the third SF novel in the Trade Pact series, following Ties of Power. In the previous volume, Jarad di Sarc challenged Faitlen di Parth for stealing reproductive tissue from Sira di Sarc and killed him shortly thereafter. Two Board Members invited the Clan to join the Trade Pact. Jarad voted against the motion, but Sira challenged him for the Council seat, proved to be the stronger, and reversed his vote. The Clan is now a member of the Trade Pact and Sira is the Speaker for the Clan Council.

In this novel, Sara is now part owner of the Silver Fox and the lover of Jason Morgan. Yet they cannot get any privacy for the interruptions, even in midflight. Other Clan Council members are not comfortable with technology, so they don't call before they drop in for a chat. Nor do the Rugherans. Then Sector Chief Lydis Bowman does call to invite the Morgans for a talk; the Conciliator just happens to be alongside the Silver Fox.

One of Bowman's Constables seems to have been brain-wiped, despite her implanted mind-shield. Also, Bowman has received reports that seven ships have landed on Acrannam and left shortly thereafter. Moreover, a human telepath, Naes Fodera, has been murdered on Plexis.

Jason is able to help the supposedly brain-wiped Constable. Sira learns that the seven ships have been used to transport fosterlings from Acranam to other planets. Then she travels to Plexis through the M'hir to check on Huido.

Huido is having problems at the Claws and Jaws on Plexis. Naes Fodera has shown up at the restaurant . . . in pieces. His only remaining Certified Multi-species Master Chef wants to serve the remains to the customers. Huido finally fires his Chef, but is left without anyone to cook for the restaurant.

However, a young member of the Clan and kitchen worker, Ruti, knows the recipes and is capable of doing the work. Huido decides to feed his customers and worry about Multi-species certification later, but Ruti has an unsavory friend: Ren Symon. And then another Carasian shows up.

When Sira arrives on Plexis, she sees Symon in the company of a Clan child. Unfortunately, he also notices her and overcomes her before she can react. Then he pops her into a stasis chamber.

In this story, Jason pursues Sira, but finds Symon instead. Sira is rescued by the Drapsk, but taken to the homeworld of the Rugherans. Barac rescues Ruti, but finds her to be a Chooser. The story also has a planetary romance. The plot is nicely muddled, but unraveled by the conclusion.

Highly recommended for Czerneda fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of mental powers, high adventure and romance.

-Arthur W. Jordin

5 out of 5 stars Nice conclusion to the series.......2003-06-23

The five stars here are more for the series as a whole than for just this novel, "To Trade the Stars." Yet, this novel is still better than average (I'd give it about 3.5 to 4 stars if it were a stand-alone work), mainly because of the romance between Barac sud Sarc and Ruti. Barac, who's been an important minor character in the first two books ("A Thousand Words for Stranger," "Ties of Power"), really comes into his own, here.

And it's because of the fact that he finds love, then is able to act on that love (when he'd believed he was incapable of finding anyone) that makes this book so good. His anguish at finding love, to believing he wouldn't be able to convert (due to the additional psionic complications of being a member of the Clan, and his beloved also being the same), to finding out that yes, indeed, he'd finally found his beloved and *was* going to be able to live the rest of his life with her, was well worth every bit of what I paid for this novel.

The rest? Well, the Morgans spend too much time apart, here. Considering Sira has the ability to teleport practically anywhere, Ms. Czerneda had to put her basically into a coma, locked inside her head -- that made sense. But making the Drapsk do it, and then not really explaining why they did it except with the sort of Gallic shrug (as in, "Who knows why they did it? They're aliens!") didn't really cut it with me.

I really liked Huido, though, and his colorful asides in the Interludes also helped liven up the book. Still, as I said, if this were a stand alone novel, I'd have given it a lesser rating. And because it _is_ a series novel, I'd definitely not even try to have someone start here; read the previous two books in the series, or you'll be hopelessly lost.

3 out of 5 stars But Why Did She End It THAT Way?.......2002-09-30

This final book in the Trade Pact Universe trilogy picks up three months after Ties of Power. The Clan have signed on to the Trade Pact, but their assimilation is not without its rough spots, and the break-away Clan colony seems to be up to mischief again. The Human telepath, Symon, may also be building up to some sort of power play. On top of all that, a contingent of Drapsk shows up with warnings of a new alien menace. Each of these story lines involves a number of peripheral stories.

Events conspire once again to separate the Morgans for most of the book. Sira spends several chapters locked inside her own head, suddenly reliving memories that had remained suppressed even after her previous mind block was removed. Though well written as usual, these passages do little to move the story along.

As before, Sira's first-person story alternates with third-person accounts of Morgan and several other key characters. Also as before, all of the characters and locales are well-drawn, the plots creative. There are murders, disappearances, chases, and assorted surprises. Maybe just a little too assorted. It isn't until the final third of To Trade the Stars that the narratives at last organize themselves around a "main" plot that gives some focus to the rest of the book.

If anything, the many story lines in Stars are even more sprawling than in Ties, which in turn was more disjointed than Strangers. Variety is the spice of life, but too much spice can overwhelm an otherwise fine dish. This trilogy has all the high-quality ingredients that make up a fine dish, but a little less variety in its story lines would have made it easier to savor their individual flavors and enjoy the blended whole. In the first two books, Czerneda set up several excellent story lines relating to Clan, Human telepaths, or both, all of which deserved better treatment in Stars. Instead, many story lines have been given pat wrap-ups-or have simply been dropped-without ever being fully developed. Czerneda's eventual choice of direction for the last part of the book is inexplicable in view of everything else she had to work with, and ultimately disappointing.

Czerneda's ability to create vivid and diverse characters, cultures, and places is by now well-established, as is her skill at braiding together a number of small but intriguing story lines within a single book. There are times, however, when the reader misses a strong, centralized plot to unify the wealth of information and viewpoints she provides so well. The Trade Pact Universe is a fascinating construct, well worth revisiting again and again, as Andre Norton has done in any number of otherwise-unrelated tales set within a common universe. Perhaps in future efforts, Czerneda will take her readers back to fill out those abandoned story lines, preferably with more depth and just a little less scope.

5 out of 5 stars The Hounds of Love.......2002-07-07

"To Trade the Stars," the third in Julie E. Czerneda's "Trade Pact Universe" series, is as much about love (and looking for it in the wrong and the right places) as it is about resolving all--err, well many--of the plot lines begun in "A Thousand Words for Stranger" and "Ties of Power." And there are all kinds of love here: love of family; love of friends; even love between species. All the characters from the earlier books return: Sira di Sarc, now Speaker for the Clan Council; her "Chosen" Captain Jason Morgan; her schemeing relatives; Huido, the restauranteur; the twisted schemer Ren Symon; and the maddening Drapsk, who still insist that Sira be their "Mystic One." An interesting new clan member, Ruti, is also introduced, and she plays a key role in the proceedings.

Again the tale, at least slightly tongue in cheek (Sira is captured by Morgan's enemy and everyone else is zipping along trying to find her), rollicks along in alternating "Chapters" (told in the first person by Sira) and "Interludes," which clue you in to what other characters are doing. Czerneda keeps things moving along to a satisfying, moving finale.

While the publisher is billing the book as the end of a trilogy the author does seem to have left the possibility of continuing on (I for one would like to know what's next for Ruti) and I for one hope that she does.

Warning: Don't even think about reading this unless you've read the first two books in the series.

5 out of 5 stars colorful action packed science fiction.......2002-06-07

In the far distant future, mankind lives on many different worlds all across the known universe. Until recently, The Clan, a humanoid looking xenophobic race with incredible mental powers have hidden themselves in plain sight on the human worlds. Now that Sira is the speaker for the clan council, the clan is a member of the Trade Pact. They fervently hope that working with humanity will be able to save them from extinction.

Sira is mated to human Jason Morgan and their mental bond is unique in a universe full of wonders. Jason is a space trader and Sira is part of his crew but when their spaceship needs repairs, Morgan uses his powers as a telepath as payment for getting the ship fixed. Morgan's most deadly enemy captures Sira forcing Jason to hunt for her, a job made much more difficult by a race who has their own plans for his beloved.

Space opera fans will love TO TRADE THE STARS, a colorful action packed novel that brings to life many new worlds inhabited by various sentient and colorful species. The protagonists of this work are endearing characters whose love for each other means risking their lives to make sure the other one is safe. Julie E. Czernada ties up all the loose ends in her Trade Pact universe, making this one the top science fiction series of the new millennium.

5 out of 5 stars Great Behind-the-Scenes View of Rock and Roll Business.......2005-10-15

The record business may have changed a bit since the 1970s when this book was written, but not so much that this book isn't still a must-read for anyone dreaming of or on their way to being involved in any aspect of the major label record business. And it's a great, fun and very informative read for anyone interested in how the major label record business really works.

This book is fact filled, but wrapped in drama, humor and poignancy as we see how real, talented musicians deal with the ups and downs of the business side of rock stardom. It is also a good view of pop culture in the 1970s.

The author takes us inside the music business, up close, giving us a blow-by-blow, true-life account of a year in the life of the band Commander Cody and the Lost Planet Airmen, a mid-tier rock band poised on the brink of greatness. It's a story of drama, comedy, pathos and heartbreak as we see the band members work their way through (and be worked by) the "star-making machinery" of the record business.

We are taken into the recording studio numerous times and see what a major label recording session is like and how it feels to be a musician involved in it all. We go into meetings with record company executives. We see the jealousies, the in-fighting, the record executive double-dealing, the hopes and dreams and disappointments of the rock business.

This book is a joy to read. It is entertaining, informative and real. Don't sign a record contract without reading it!

Book Description

"This book is destined to be a bombshell in the field and perhaps far beyond the field." -Paul Buhle, coauthor of Tender Comrades: A Backstory of the Hollywood Blacklist As World War II wound down in 1945 and the cold war heated up, the skilled trades that made up the Conference of Studio Unions (CSU) began a tumultuous strike at the major Hollywood studios. This turmoil escalated further when the studios retaliated by locking out CSU in 1946. This labor unrest unleashed a fury of Red-baiting that allowed studio moguls to crush the union and seize control of the production process, with far-reaching consequences. This engrossing book probes the motives and actions of all the players to reveal the full story of the CSU strike and the resulting lockout of 1946. Gerald Horne draws extensively on primary materials and oral histories to document how limited a "threat" the Communist party actually posed in Hollywood, even as studio moguls successfully used the Red scare to undermine union clout, prevent film stars from supporting labor, and prove the moguls' own patriotism. Horne also discloses that, unnoticed amid the turmoil, organized crime entrenched itself in management and labor, gaining considerable control over both the "product" and the profits of Hollywood. This research demonstrates that the CSU strike and lockout were a pivotal moment in Hollywood history, with consequences for everything from production values, to the kinds of stories told in films, to permanent shifts in the centers of power.

5 out of 5 stars A Needed Light.......2001-06-24

Reviewer Everitt's remarks capture the book's essential value. Several points however merit emphasis. First, Horne's book brings out the symbiotic relation between the studios' desire for non-independent company unions, on one hand, and organized crime's desire for corrupt unions, on the other. By taking in one another's washing during the tumultuous events of '45 - '47, these two representatives of private capital maintained an alliance that defeated efforts by the Conference of Studio Unions to emerge as an independent union of movie-making employees. Horne the historian is detailed about this sinister and under-reported alliance. Second, by using abundant primary sources, the author debunks the nurtured image of CSU as a communist-led movement, a scare tactic still in its infancy following the anti-fascist WWII and, as the book shows, a tactic used to increasing effect by the corporate-owned press of the day. Belated communist support for CSU strikers was willfully twisted by these flacks into communist domination. Third, the inability of the CSU to cross racial and gender lines of the day is emphasized. This had the unfortunate effect of reducing potential for attracting outside allies, especially among aggrieved African-Americans and women's groups, though it's hardly surprising that prejudices within the union would reflect those of the larger society from which it sprang. It's fascinating to follow this dark underside of the Hollywood dream factory, though I did find time shifts in the narrative confusing at times. Nonetheless, Horne has focused his word-camera on a worthy and neglected real life drama.

5 out of 5 stars Hollywood's buried history.......2001-02-04

Amazingly, this is the first comprehensive work written on a key event in American labor history -- an event that was headline news in the mid 1940's, and that among many other things set the stage for the passage of Taft-Hartley and propelled Ronald Reagan into politics. While countless historians have left no stone unturned in examining the Hollywood Blacklist, the story of the Hollywood studio strikes has long been relegated to footnotes and chapters in more general works. With this work Gerald Horne has shined a relentless light of painstaking scholarship on what may well be the most neglected event in American labor history. The footnotes alone are worth the price of the book and will no doubt entice many readers to follow these myriad paths deeper into the hidden corners of Hollywood history.

This book belongs on the shelf of anyone interested in Hollywood history, labor history, the Hollywood Blacklist, American radical history, and the history of organized crime in America. It should especially be read by anyone who earns their living as a worker in the film and television industry or is a member of IATSE and wishes to know the true story of their union's dark history.

Product Description

History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

Best known as Mr. Sulu, helmsman of the Starship Enterprise TM and Captain of the Starship Excelsior, George Takei is beloved by millions as part of the command team that has taken audiences to new vistas of adventure in Star Trek ®--the unprecedented television and feature film phenomenon.

From the program's birth in the changing world of the 1960s and death at the hands of the network, to its rebirth in the hearts and minds of loyal fans, the Star Trek story has blazed its own path into our recent cultural history, leading to a series of blockbuster feature films and three new versions of Star Trek for television.

The Star Trek story is one of boundless hope and crushing disappointment, wrenching rivalries and incredible achievements. It is also the story of how, after nearly thirty years, the cast of characters from a unique but poorly rated television show have come to be known to millions of Americans and people around the world as family.

For George Takei, the Star Trek adventure is intertwined with his personal odyssey through adversity in which four-year-old George and his family were forced by the United States government into internment camps during World War II.

Star Trek means much more to George Takei than an extraordinary career that has spanned thirty years. For an American whose ideals faced such a severe test, Star Trek represents a shining embodiment of the American Dream--the promise of an optimistic future in which people from all over the world contribute to a common destiny.

3 out of 5 stars He's Not Just Sulu........2007-07-30

I just finished reading George Takei's autobiography the other night. This guy has led a fascinating life.

When he was younger, he met Eleanor Roosevelt and Martin Luther King, Jr. His first job in show business was helping to dub "Rodan" into English. Before "Star Trek", he did movies with Richard Burton and Alec Guinness. And during the run of the show, he did a movie with John Wayne.

Till I read this book, I also didn't know that he had spent 11 years on a commission in L.A. that was responsible for getting their subway system built.

Interestingly, he doesn't go into a huge amount of detail about the show, though he makes his (and other cast members') reasons clear for not liking Shatner. And given certain revelations about Takei's personal life over the last few years, any discussion about relationships outside of his family and career are strangely absent from the book. Still, it's a good read.

I do agree with other reviewers, however, that even with a length of 400 pages, this book seemed too short. Given that it came out in 1994, I would love to see Takei update and re-release it.

4 out of 5 stars I think it needed more Sulu and less Takei.......2006-06-10

When I saw this book at a used bookstore, I immediately snatched it up. As an original Trekkie, I try to read everything I can about Star Trek and the people who made it. While this is a good book and Takei has led an interesting life, I found myself wanting more information about his life in Star Trek than it contains. This is not to say that Takei has not led an interesting life, quite the contrary. His family was dislocated and interned as "potentially subversive" Japanese-Americans during World War II and he has been a political activist most of his life.
The problem is within me and I am no doubt similar to many others. We want to know all we can about Star Trek, and to that end, the personal lives of the actors takes on a secondary role. This is not to say that Takei doesn't spend a great deal of time discussing his life in Star Trek, he does. It is just that a lot of it is complaints about the arrogance of William Shatner and the personal conflicts in the actor's egos. There is also discussion about Takei's attempts to negotiate higher salaries and a greater role in the series and movies. He has some extremely nice things to say about Leonard Nimoy and his high level of integrity.
I enjoyed the book, the disappointment that I felt was personal, and I wanted less Takei and more Sulu. Takei has every right to make his autobiography about himself. However, more so far unpublished insights into the doings of Star Trek would have made the book more interesting to the diehard Trekkie in me.

3 out of 5 stars Interesting autobiography.......2005-11-17

George Takei's autobiography proves to be an interesting reading material as he related to his life. First half of the book dealt with his life as a Japanese-American, dealing with wartime as well as post war racism. His story of his life in the internment camp was quite moving.

Unlike Jimmy Doohan's book, at least Takei remembered why he's so famous and why people wants to read about his life. Takei's book got interesting tidbits and background information on his role as Mr. Sulu and Star Trek material. As a Star Trek fan, I found this part of the book to be most interesting. It was interesting to read his take on John Wayne and the tribute Takei pay to him when Takei was working with him in Green Beret. I think that story need to be expanded a bit more. But Takei tells a good story from how he was initially interviewed by Roddenberry to the Star Trek VI movie when his character finally won the command of the ship of his own (and probably reduced Takei to a bit player on the film).

[...]

George Takei obviously didn't like William Shatner very much. Maybe it has to do with ego clashing or screen time sharing. In that, he joined with Jimmy Doohan in their dislike of Shatner. He probably didn't care about the way his character was being treated and in that he joined with Nichelle Nichols as only two minority members of the crew trying to improved their lot.

But overall, this proves to be a pretty decent autobiography, now that he's out of the closet, maybe George Takei can update his own book and relate to what it mean to be the only gay member of Star Trek (that we know of so far).

5 out of 5 stars An eloquent piece of work.........2005-02-05

George Takei is a wonderful role model for Asian Americans in this country! As an Asian American actor in Hollywood, George had to endure quite a bit compared to some of his contemporaries but handled his experiences with great class! George refused to let himself be pigeonholed into stereotypical roles later on in his career and fought for dignity for his character Sulu which I greatly admired..

His book is a fascinating glimpse into a life of a Japanese American who was incarcerated simply because of his race during World War II..funny enough..even though the US was at war with Germany and Italy at the same time you never saw German Americans or Italian Americans incarcerated....

Although George and his family experienced this undignified treatment, George writes quite eloquently about his experiences and how they drove him to be the best he could be in his chosen profession..

He realized he had a great responsibility to his character in such a highly visible and popular TV show and fought to make his character more visible and succeeded! He peppers his book with anecdotes about his experiences on the set of Star Trek and his relationships with his fellow castmates.

As a writer George is very talented and he also has a website where he keeps a monthly journal of what's going on in his life and career:

http://www.georgetakei.com/

George is truly an inspiration and a talented writer. I think you will really enjoy his book!

Book Description

The Man Who Wore the Star is the first book by an experienced corporate CEO to offer a special kind of real-time perspective on a CEO's work.

The author, James W. Kinnear, brings a special credibility to the task. He faced a blockbuster problem when he became CEO of Texaco in January of 1987: a $10.5 billion court judgment the company couldn't pay, and couldn't appeal. Texaco was forced to file for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection -- the largest U.S. corporation ever to do so. Yet within two years the company had settled the court case, gotten out of bankruptcy, and fought off a takeover bid. For years to come, this will rank as one of the great corporate turnarounds.

The Man Who Wore the Star builds on these experiences to offer a unique perspective on the problem-solving process. For it puts forward not only what this CEO says today about his challenges, but also the texts of speeches through which he addresses these issues and exercised leadership.

The topics addressed are as wide-ranging as the job of a CEO.

How do you rally employees to work harder than ever, when the company's future seems less secure than ever? See Chapter 2.

How do you secure the loyalty of shareholders, when the stock is struggling and a takeover offer is on the table? See Chapter 3.

Can (or should) leaders in business ignore ethical concerns? See Chapter 4. What about a company's responsibility to the environment? See Chapter 7. How can a CEO deal with new technologies that developed after his or her career was mature? See Chapter 8.

Throughout the books runs the theme of leadership, the special skill that responds to every one of these challenges. Leaders, writes Jim Kinnear, are driven by their dreams of success for the enterprise, rather than for themselves. They lead by words, and by example. They must be accountable. Above all, they must have, and they must project, a strong sense of ethics.

5 out of 5 stars Timeless advice.......2006-04-19

Re-reading "The Man Who Wore the Star" after almost four years, I was struck by how the message has stood the test of time. Jim Kinnear shows that leadership stems not from ego or self-promotion, but from character. He reminds us that the best decisions are the ones that are right - not those that are easiest. A strong sense of ethics is not a barrier to suceeding - it is an essential
element in success.

5 out of 5 stars The Right Way.......2002-03-10

"The Man Who Wore The Star" is by James W. Kinnear, retired CEO of Texaco, who became CEO in 1987 when Texaco was on the verge of bankruptcy with a court ordered judgment of 10.5 billion dollars hanging over its head. (Some two years later Mr. Kinnear had turned the company around!) His book is a study of leadership, problem solving, communications, ethics, values, etc., and it is an extremely interesting and forthright book dealing with management's responsibilities. Our world would be a far better world if ALL MANAGERS and CEOs shared Mr. Kinnear's views regarding loyalty, ethics, values, dedication, and work habits. In view of the many problems facing the world today, (Afghanistan, Iraq, Bosnia, Enron, oil supply, environmental issues, the importance of corporate reputations, corporate governance, etc.), I found the book to be extremely relevant to both the present and future. Mr. Kinnear's book gets an "E" for excellence. It should be a must for all business schools.

5 out of 5 stars Good Guys Can Finish First.......2002-02-28
