Customer Reviews:
Great Trilogy.......2007-09-16
I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and the two preceding books in the series. It was hard to wait to read the next book. I was able to really connect with this story and found it very interesting.
Super Reader.......2007-08-31
A pretty average and very light fantasy. It seems a group of vampire hunters from our world have gone to another to help a queen fight an evil vampire queen. Including a vampire nightclub owner, and a couple of other supernatural types.
For a war against an evil vampire queen, well, there really isn't much war. The evil vampire queen is pretty lame, too. Probably because she is a crazy girl that became a vampire, not really Lilith.
The battle at the end is over in about two eyeblinks. Pretty much it seems all this is kept out of it to have space for the romance parts.
Other than that, Roberts seems to be a decent enough writer, but I doubt she grew up reading about medieval warfare or monsters.
I wish it wasn't over.............2007-07-26
As I read the last few pages this afternoon I was caught in a bittersweet battle of not wanting the story to end and yearning to read the finale. What a great book and a great trilogy.
With the complex nature and background of Cian I would love to read about his journey through his life of being "damned" and his transition into "normal" society. I think we need some more of him. What an amazing character.
Trilogies Rock.......2007-07-19
Nora Roberts is the best a trilogies. They all have a good ending but you cant wait to read the next one. This book will hook you.
poorly read.......2007-07-16
I truly enjoy all of Nora Roberts books, and I read the first 2 Circle Trilogy books. The Book 3, I did not realize was ordered as an audio book. The story is great, the reading terrible. I would not recommend anyone getting the audio unless this is really your thing. I like to read and imagine what someones voice would sound like, not listen to a man try to read a woman's part and sound like a female. Terrible reading!
Book Description
Coloring the circular designs known as mandalas is a relaxing, meditative activity enjoyed by adults and children alike. The mandalas in this book are specially designed to provide a creative encounter with the Divine as a feminine presence. The archetypal imagery of the circle—appearing in the form of organic shapes of nature, the curves of the female body, the womb and childbirth rituals, the circular turning of cosmic rhythms, or geometric designs conveying the primal energy of the Goddess—celebrates the full range of the sacred feminine, from gentle and motherly to fierce and challenging.
An introductory essay traces the stream of the sacred feminine from prehistoric sources through modern spiritual traditions and the work of contemporary scholars of psychology and religion. Mandalas for coloring include designs based on ancient European artifacts, traditional Hindu yantras, and contemporary art. Full-color illustrations provide inspiration, and instructions for drawing your own geometric mandalas add to the creative possibilities. Coloring Mandalas 3 will appeal particularly to individuals and groups who wish to explore spirituality as a pathway to deeper meaning and personal growth.

Go for a walk in bliss in these mandalas.......2007-07-05
Be daring to lose yourself in a mandala. One never knows what to expect. Open your heart, mind and soul. You will not be disappointed. Learn from these forms and then learn to create your own!
Too scripted.......2007-05-07
I would have preferred something looser; more latitude for designing my own Mandalas with a simple idea or direction given for "guidance". Actually, it's probably better to just create you own mandalas completely from scratch! There's probably plenty of mandala information free on the web, if you are interested in the history and/or the multitude of ways in which they are used today.

Great for gifted kids.......2007-08-06
I used the ideas in this book with my gifted students, age K thru 3. They loved it and really came up with some wonderful pictures. It is a good art project that also brings in math.
Ed Emberley's Picture Pie.......2007-03-17
This is a wonderful book for the kindergarten class I am currently student teaching in. We made the spring flowers while teaching circles, half circles, and quarter circles. It also made a bright spring bulletin board.
Worth the time........2007-01-16
If you know someone who likes to do art, this is a great book. You need to have the time to organize the necessary pieces to create these pictures. The end result is always successful for children.
Highly Recommended.......2007-01-10
I was not familiar with this book before I bought it; however, it was recommended by the teachers of the students for which this and several other Ed Emberley books were purchased. From the thank yous I have received, this book was a real hit! It is used in a Native American Mission School with great enthusiasm and even better results. What more could you ask for?
Fun for all ages!.......2002-11-22
This is a fun book for toddlers and up! Ed Emberley provides lots of ideas / directions for making flowers, insects, animals, borders etc. using only circles! To make it easier, we bought some circle punches in a variety of sizes. Add some paper and glue and you're set to make all sorts of pretty things! My 4 and 6 yr olds both love it. We also own Picture Pie 2, but find this is the easier book to use just because we can use punches instead of tracing and cutting. Lots of fun!

Book Description
When four strange, and strangely talented, youngsters are brought to Winding Circle by master mage Niko they find themselves drawn together in a Circle of Magic—a circle that binds them despite their differences.Tamora Pierce, America’s most popular writer of young adult fantasy novels, weaves her own special magic in the opening volume of her wildly popular Circle of Magic quartet. Tammy herself narrates this recording, supported by a cast of nearly thirty actors, including Bruce Coville appearing as Niko. The rich web of voices bring this intricate story to life in a way that listeners will never forget.
Customer Reviews:
warning - very occult.......2007-09-25
My 9 yr old daughter an I have read Tamora Pierce's books on Tortall, and found them very good. These books were recommended to me also, and since I enjoyed the Alanna series very much, I decided to read these. They aren't as good as the books on Tortall. What's more, although Pierce writes about magic in all of her books, these ones in particular I have found to be quite occult in nature.
The occult elements include magic circles, craft magic, and gods/goddesses. The human mages are part of a Temple and practice meditation. Their blessing is tracing a "gods circle" on their chests with their fingertips.
Just as a warning to parents who like to monitor what their children read, these books could almost be a primer to Pagan/Wiccan rites. Read them before your kids do, or with them... but if you are concerned about the occult, don't let them read these books on their own.
Fire, Plants, Weaving, and Storms...come together.......2007-04-01
Sandry is in a dungeon...and her oil-lamp is nearly empty.
Daja is out at sea, floating. All her family was gone, they'd drowned.
Roach (later known as Briar) is about to be sentanced to the docks.
Tris's family doesn't want her anymore.
These four children all have something in common, magic. When Niko, a famous mage comes and takes them to Winding Circle, they are not getting along. Before they know it all four of them are kicked out and placed in Disciplin Cottage where their mentors Niko, Rosethorn, Frostpine, and Lark teach them about magic.
This is a great beginning to a great series! Anybody should enjoy it!
Ahmazing........2007-02-15
About four years ago, I got this book for my birthday. And at that time, I had no interest in fantasy, so I swear it sat on my nightstand for weeks--no, MONTHS before I even opened the thing. Eventually, I opened it. And I read a couple sentences, put the book down and started on homework. Then the calling came, my mind started edging towards ideas of what would happen to Sandry. Why was she in a cell, what did she do with the thread? I ended up crawling onto my bed and reading it. I couldn't stop. I fell in love with Sandry and Briar, Tris and Daja. I loved how everybody seemed to clash and then smooth over. That is when I fell in love with fantasy, with Tamora Pierce.
I reccommend this book for anybody who wants a good fantasy. Just give it a try.
complicated (parts almost don't make sense) and boring, very boring.......2007-01-13
Sandry's Book is a book I had to read for an assignment at school. The book gives you about 100 pages of almost a Martha Stewart, Dr.Phil feeling like your watching it on tv (you'd get it if you read it - which you should NOT)and the other 152 pages are dissapointing. There's about 2 parts of excitement and they both end quickly. This novel is very, very boring and I would only reccomend this to a person that is into weaving, gardening and metalwork.
Don't Hezitate to read this book!.......2006-11-25
At first I did hezitate to read this book because I don't know how I could ever leave Tortal. But I finally got the guts to do it. And after reading the first chapter I knew that I would LOVE this book. It has to do with four kids: Tris who has strange powers with weather, Sandry who surely can weave, Daja who has conections with blacksmithing, and Briar also known as Roach who has conections with plants. You'll absulutely love this book if you love magic and excitement!!

The Hour Before Dawn: And Two Other Stories from Newford
ASIN: 0670036471 |
Book Description
Lillian is an orphan who lives with her aunt on a homestead miles from anyone, surrounded by uncharted forest. She wanders the woods, chasing squirrels and rabbits and climbing trees. Free-spirited and independent Lillian is a kindred spirit to the many wild cats who gather around the ancient beech tree. One day, while she is under the beech, Lillian is bitten by a poisonous snake. The cats refuse to let her die, and use their magic to turn her into one of their own. How she becomes a girl again is a lyrical, original folktale.
Set in the countryside north of de Lint's fictional Newford, with some of the same characters as the duo's recent, acclaimed Seven Wild Sisters, A Circle of Cats is the long-awaited first picture book by long-time friends Charles de Lint and Charles Vess, whose masterful art is as magical as the story.
Illustrations by Charles Vess.
Customer Reviews:
Charles De Lint Original Faery Tale/Folk Tale.......2007-02-06
This book is a prequel to "Seven Wild Sisters", and focuses on the character of Lillian, a free-spirited orphan, who lives with her aunt, miles away from others. She is an independent and free spirit who leaves food for wild cats and seeks fairies in the wild forest and countryside. This is a magical, lyrical, and original fairytale written by Charles de Lint. Charles Vess' illustrations, in color throughout the book, are superb! Today it is rare to find an original faerytale that isn't a retelling of a classic tale. I recommend this book to all age groups, and most especially to those who love cats and faerytales. I predict that this book, along with the others in the series, will be cherished and read for years to come!

My daughter and I both enjoyed reading this book together. One of our absolute favorites.
A new North American fable.......2004-03-04
Charles de Lint has long been creating a new North American mythology through his Newford (and pre-Newford, for that matter) stories of magical realities in a modern world, where Celtic, Native American, cyberspatial and other mysteries combine into a fresh tapestry of lore. Now, de Lint and artist Charles Vess have created a modern folk tale in which a young girl and the spirits of trees interact with the innate magic of cats.
The story is written for children, but adults -- particularly those who have been steeped in de Lint's lore in the past -- will still find this tale absorbing. It's perfect to read aloud to a child or for an intermediate reader to enjoy alone. The artwork, too, is an integral part of the story; Vess supplies us with a very vivid, spindly limbed and red-haired young heroine, brimming with sparkle and delight, seeing the world through deep, thoughtful eyes.
And the cats? Don't be surprised if one pads its way from the pages to curl up on your lap for a scratch and snooze.
Wonderful book!!.......2003-12-22
I rarely write reviews but this book is a fascinating read for adults and children alike. The illustrations are superb. Well worth buying.
An original childrens' story.......2003-09-26
This is an excellent, 44 page book for younger children, filled with full color illustrations. The type style and formatting make it easily readable. It is the story of a young girl, Lillian, who lives with her aunt at the edge of the forest, far from the nearest neighbors. She spends her free time wandering in the woods looking for fairies. When disaster strikes, she is saved by cat magic. This is an original fairy tale, and seems a mixture of folklore and magic. It can be read to younger children, or read by slightly older children. I would put the age level at 4 to 12, although I am 67 and thought it was an interesting tale (I actually bought it to use as a gift for a young child).
Book Description
Keeping the African heritage alive
As she teaches her granddaughter to sew a traditional sweetgrass basket, a grandmother weaves a story, going back generations to her old-timey grandfather's village in faraway Africa. There, as a boy, he learned to make baskets so tightly woven they could hold the rain. Even after being stolen away to a slave ship bound for America, he remembers what he learned and passes these memories on to his children - as they do theirs, so that
. . . when your fingers talk just right
that circle will go out and out again -
past slavery and freedom, old ways and new,
and your basket will hold the past . . .
This powerful picture book, with its rhythmic text and evocative paintings, spirals through time, becoming a triumphant song - a rich story of a craft, a culture, and a people.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful book.......2007-06-13
This is a great way for young and old to lean about sweet grass basket making! Perfect for late elementary school students.
beautiful book.......2006-11-10
This book was very nice: lovely pictures, gentle storyline that was also informative. I enjoyed it very much.
DR. Beck's Class.......2006-01-25
The book's illustrations were very interesting and creative. The story line was an accurate dipiction of slavery and the history behind it. It connected strong family ties from generation to generation with the beautiful basket weaves and family customs. Those who are associated with the geography of the book can make a strong personal connection to the atmosphere of the book. For teaching purposes, it relates the importance of family history and bonds throught the generations. It also shows how far we've developed as a society. It would be part of our text set for slavery in our classroom.
The best children's book on Charleston.......2004-08-29
If I were making a very short list of books to remember Charleston by, this would be on it. The language is lyrical and wonderful to read aloud. The illustrations are gorgeous. Both Raven and Lewis do a superb job of sharing the meaning of family ties across generations, as well as sharing the Gullah culture. I'm a newcomer to the Low Country, and I don't have any African heritage, but still, something in this story really resonated with me. Highly recommended!
A moving history of a dying art.......2004-06-20
We love the South Carolina Low Country, and are proud to own a number of sweetgrass baskets, most made by the same lady. This book was a wonderful find to share with my daughter, who is almost 4. The pictures are lovely, and the history is honest without being too brutal for younger listeners. Older readers will certainly get the depth of the slave history, while it serves as a good introduction for the younger. I found it to be a poetic and lyrical read, and a good explanation of how the art of Low Country coil basket weaving (also known as Charleston sweetgrass basket weaving) has been passed down.

This was a great book by Debra Doyle. Where Randal meets some old "friends" & a new chllenge with his magic. Where he is forced to trust an old enemy's wife when he is blocked off from his magic by a magical bell. And finding a new challenge he needs to complete in order to save a kingdom.

The Divine Circle Of Ladies Making Mischief.......2007-03-09
I loved this book , as I have all of this authors work. So much fun and suspense wraped together, impossible to put down. Makes you wish for a "bit" of magic in yourself.
Wonderful read.......2007-02-07
I love this series and I never get tired of the different people. I would recommend this series to mystery fans.
Another great read!!!.......2006-09-15
The third in a series, this book continues to let us peek in on the circle of five. This series of books is definitely a light, enjoyable read. They're not overly violent, but do keep you engaged in the story line. The Wiccan and herbal info is woven into these books in a way that won't "offend" non-pagans. As a pagan, it's nice to have good fiction that accurately describes modern Wicca (not spewing the TV/movie wicca disinfo). I'm hoping for many more in this series. And perhaps another series from this author that is accurate in pagan beliefs.
A very different type of 'chick lit' (to be kind)..........2006-07-09
I did NOT like this book.
First of all, there was the fact that the author had a tendency to overuse words ("clairvoyance"), use unnecessary terminology ("olfactory equipment" for nose,) and create an overly pedantic dialogue between characters that was consequently off-putting. I really believe that the author consulted a thesaurus frequently while writing. Unfortunately, it didn't work.
Secondly, the story-line was completely unengaging. The characters each had likeable qualities, but the plot was completely one-dimensional. I don't normally read about "murder mystery" plots in chick-literature, and now I understand why. It was horrendous and predictable.
Finally, who is the target demographic for this novel? The characters are 40-plus, but the cover and the description on the back of the book seem to be suggesting a much younger audience. While the plot was on an eighth grade level, the narrative and dialogue tried to be on a college level.
I would not recommend this book to anyone at any age. It was very disappointing.
Fun, light read.......2006-06-28
A quintet of upper-class middle-aged women use Wiccan magic and old-fashioned chutzpah to solve mysteries in this light, fun read.
I really enjoyed the mystery plot. Our intrepid heroines' dilemma makes total sense--they know what's going on, but they have no proof beyond their mystical powers, therefore no evidence to take to the police. What's a witch to do? Solve the crime herself, of course.
Along the way there's a lot of cute dog interaction (the POV character has a dog, and an ability to understand Scruffy's thoughts; Scruffy is a very true-to-life dog and so cute), and beautiful description of the women's Wiccan rituals. You can just see the candles flickering, smell the salt air, taste the food.
One minor quibble: The characters have a tendency to speak in sermons and adages rather than in normal dialogue. I don't know anyone who, even in the company of their pagan circle, talks quite this much about "harm none," the threefold law, the proper diet for dogs, "thoughts are things," etc.
Book Description
These wonderful games to play in circles have been passed down from generation to generation and are full of music, wonder, magic, and make-believe. Some of these circle games are stationary games in which one child chases after another while the rest of the group does not move, while others begin with stationary circles but end with traveling circles as, one by one, children join a group moving around the circle. All of these games encourage a variety of developmentally appropriate behaviors, including social skills, cognitive development, creativity, language development, motor skills, and musical skills. Some of the favorite songs included are "Muffin Man," "Charlie over the Ocean," "The Farmer in the Dell," "Allee Galloo," and "Here We Go Round the Mulberry Bush."
