Calculations are only as good as your numbers.......2007-08-03

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Code of the Samurai is a nice peek into Japanese culture, in under a hundred pages. It's amazing to see how such an ancient book can still be of use today, and how some things we consider 'common courtesy' have fundamental roots, and an actual reason.

I found this book educational, comical, and well worth reading. In less than a hundred pages it taught me a lot about medieval Japan. What I enjoyed more is the way its original author's voice comes shining through in the text. His condescension, his bluntness, his matter-of-fact all make for a hilarious introduction to the mind of the samurai. Some of the statements that come out of Shigesuke's mouth are a world apart from what we hear in textbooks today. He has no problem telling the student that he is a "lazy" "moron" "coward" unless he is exactly what a warrior should be. But beneath all this there is wisdom here. A very interesting book.

Wonderful read, and unlike such weightier classics as THE ART OF WAR or THE BOOK OF FIVE RINGS, this one is readily accessible to the western mind.

After reading it twice, I came to think that everything after the first chapter -- nay, after the first two paragraphs -- was mere repetition. This is because all the behaviors and philosophies the author recommends would be the natural consequence if one truly were to "keep death in mind at every possible moment."

The book is a series of short chapters like "Loyalty," "Finances," "Personal Appearance;" each describing the ideal behavior of an ideal samurai with respect to each.

I can't comment on the organization or skill of Cleary's translation, though, since I know of no other version of this book. However I am inclined to think it is adept, since the nature of the work suggests the original Japanese would be extremely stiff. This is not the case with the English.

Gripes:

1. Note that this is a thin book; you can read it in about an hour. I was expecting something much thicker, at least the size of THE UNFETTERED MIND, say.

2. Oscar Ratti's illustrations will be disappointing to those familiar with his work in SECRETS OF THE SAMURAI and AIKIDO: THE DYNAMIC SPHERE. There are only a handful of them, and that handful isn't very interesting.

3. The binding of this book came apart rather quickly, after just the first read. Perhaps just my copy, though.

4. Sadly, the introduction by Cleary is completely forgettable.

What rules? Make it an integrated part of yourself!!!!.......2007-07-07

Many pick up this book because of the title "Rules of life" and wonder what revelation this book brings. I found that the author has done a superb job. There is nothing extraordinary about any of the 100 rules in the book. The extraordinary thing is his ability to compile centuries old wisdom into an organised book. Although many of the rules are just an extension of the earlier rules, compliment has to be given to Richard Templar.

A reader could have 4 gains reading this book:

1. Serves as a reminder to life lessons
It serves as a reminder to what your mother, grandparents have told you. You are likely to be more receptive that these are read up by yourself now. Besides you pay so likelihood that you will start some discipline. {This world is ironic. When something is free (from your parents and grandparents) we tend to ignore or even challenge it until we pay yourself}.

2. Organisational skills in writing
Organisational skills in writing could be picked up from this book. You must have always faced the difficulties of putting thousands of idea into words. See how Richard has extended one idea into several rules and how he does not clutter his points.

3. Following the latest trends
Following the latest trends in fashion, news, investments have been publicly known. However, reading trends has just taken its footage in recent years. In this 21st century, we were too busy with too many temptation and look for rules to everything possible. This has bring about the latest trend in email writing, business report writing, fitness building. This book is part of the latest hot property in the reading world and it will help you connect yourself with other avid readers.

4. Words of widsom?
Words of wisdom have always being a good stepping stone in one's career. If you are perceived to be full of them, you are likely to be looked up. Use the rules here to your advantage.

Personally I use this book as a reference to see where I stand and it seems that I already have these rules integrated into my daily life before then. So is my reading a waste of my time? Well, the readings help me with the 4 gains that I mentioned earlier.

Try out the book and see for yourself! If you are already a well disciplined person, you know you are after reading. Otherwise, you could join us soon after reading. One word of advice be flexible. No rule is perfect. Be flexible to use them in your daily routine.

Easy read that will inspire deep thought.......2007-06-27

I have read and reread this book, and I find myself using this book as a constant source of motivation and redirection towards the positive. This book is well constructed and written in a way that engages the reader to want to read more. The simple ideas contained in the "rules of life" will inspire some pretty deep thoughts concerning how you live your life and react to your surroundings.
I have taken to writing notes in the margins of the book, and when I re-read the rule I find myself getting a deeper understanding of how these rules play an important role in my life. When you come right down to it, all self-help literature explains how to recognize and overcome negative or destructive behaviors in our life. Templar helps explain how following "rules" will help you gain control over some of the more taxing events in your life. Templar uses very basic ideas and then explains how following these ideas enables you to gain understanding. A simple idea can take you into some very complex self interpretation.
This book will start you on a journey of self discovery that will help carry you beyond the selfish, destructive life style that many of us lead. After reading this book, I have recognized the negative, repetative behavior in my life and now try to follow the "rules" to overcome this behavior.
I highly recommend this book for anyone who wants to start themselves on a road of self improvement.

A Reminder: common sense works..........2007-06-19

One only needs to do a superficial search of the Blogsphere to find literally hundreds of self improvement sites, showing us how to become better, healthier, organized individuals - improved workers, lovers, husbands, wives, bosses, and employees - kinder, giving and generally much happier human beings. Most of these SI blogs are very well written and informative, some containing a few gems. In this international bestseller, (certainly a treasure trove of gems) Templar has distilled a vast amount of information for self improvement into simple, easy to read and follow `rules' to live our lives in the most optimum way possible. The author asks us to join the ranks of "...those that follow the rules everyday." These people, he says,

"... choose to do certain things every day of [their] lives. Some things we do will make us unhappy and some things we choose to do will make us happier. By observing people, I have reasoned that if we follow a few basic `Rules of Life' we tend to get more done, shrug off adversity more easily, get more out of life and spread a little happiness around us as we go."

The key to Templar's `rules', I believe, is to recognize bad habits and create new habits to replace them, thereby contributing productively to our health and general well being. Our decisions no matter how inconsequential or seemingly important, and our on-going behaviour towards others and particularly ourselves, determine our general happiness. In the end, however, it all comes down to a matter of choice. It is really about how we choose to respond to the world.

One can hear echoes of Existentialism and Stoicism in this little manual - gleaning aspects of both philosophies, constructing a simple guide for the modern human being to change conditions in life.

As Templar states in his introduction, "What you find is good old-common sense. There is nothing new here you don't already know. This book is not a revelation, but a reminder." How true this is after I read the book to find basic actions and attitudes that somehow have been lost over time, forgotten, so simple yet appearing so hard when remembered, but essential to our best possible feelings and actions in our day to day lives.

The book is structured into general chapters on a specific theme, such as "Rules for You", "Family and Friend Rules" and "Social Rules" to then break down these themes into basic `rules' to practice, turn into habits, and hopefully live by. For example, my personal favourites:

Accept yourself.
Be on the side of the angels, not the beasts.
Be the last to raise your voice.
Change what you can change, let go of the rest.
Aim to be the very best at everything you do - not second best.
Have a belief system.
Dress like today is important.
Have dignity.
Only the good feel guilty.
Treat your partner better than your best friend.

Again, common sense advice that one has heard before, but has somehow forgotten, or has simply not considered putting into practice.

I like this book because the chapters are only two pages in length and written well. Templar's sense of humour, however, can be a little lame, but he means well. Other than this minor quibble, this book is a little treasure.

A firm 4 stars.

He "Gets IT" big time.......2007-05-17

I saw this book while shopping at Staples, it caught my eye, read a few pages and committed the title to memory. A week or so later decided to look it up on Amazon, read reviews decided it was worth adding to my self -help collection. I glanced through the entire book getting a feel then began to start at the beginning with the intro....i was hooked! I LOVED the INTRO! How crazy is that? This guy TOTALLY gets IT and makes it simple. This is a book to be kept by my bed, referenced repeatedly so I continue to GET IT too. I may just pick up some of his other books..

This book is fantastic!!! It helped me a lot in understanding what things are worth doing in life, how time should be spent, and how to treat myself and others. Most of the rules written in the book are of common sense, but since we tend to lose this valuable knowledge during adulthood, is good to be reminded of them.

Book Review for Profit for Life: How Capitalism Excels

How do you measure the value of servant leadership in business? How can we know it works? These have been two of the most frequently asked questions in our consulting practice over the past 30 years.

In Profit for Life, Jay Bragdon provides us with some compelling answers. He does this by setting aside much of the linear cause-and-effect thinking that drives business these days, and adopts a more rounded, holistic approach that gives us deeper insight into the firm.

The book is based on the experiences of 60 companies - Bragdon's "learning lab" - that broadly represent the industry/sector diversity of the world economy. Throughout the text he describes 16 of these pioneering companies, called the Focus Group. The distinguishing feature of all these firms is their effort to mimic living systems - in the ways they organize, manage and add value. This mental model is radically different from the traditional one that views the firm as a money making machine.

Although it may seem counter intuitive, the living system approach yields vastly superior results than the traditional one. For example, the average equity return of learning lab companies was nearly double the S&P 500 over the past decade; and their excess performance continues as this review is written. Bragdon expects such premium returns will diminish over time as the more effective methods of the living system model become copied and enter the mainstream. Nevertheless, these results are a strong affirmation of the milieu in which servant leadership normally operates.

Servant leadership, to Bragdon, is all about relationships. He says "relational equity" is the foundation on which companies build financial equity. When companies care about people and the things people care about, Employees become inspired and their inspiration cascades into everything they do, including their relationships with customers, suppliers and other key stakeholders.

The raison d'etre of these servant-led firms is value creation - value that permeates all relationships. Companies that excel at such value creation pursue a strategy Bragdon calls "living asset stewardship" (LAS). The fundamental premise of LAS is: Profit arises from life, and must therefore serve life if it is to be sustainable.

To understand the strategic value of living asset stewardship, Bragdon makes a critical distinction between living assets (people and Nature) and non-living capital assets (buildings, equipment and financial reserves). We see this in three contexts. First, people are closely bonded to Nature - genetically, physically and spiritually - in ways that capital assets are not. Second, living assets are the source of non-living capital assets. And third, because living assets are inherently creative and emergent, their value grows over time rather than depreciating as capital assets do.

The operating leverage in the learning lab and the 16 Focus Group companies resides in the human heart rather than in mechanistic financial gearing. This is supported by the fact that they generate consistently higher returns on equity while carrying substantially lower debt ratios.

Although traditionally managed companies have been adopting some stewardship practices in the past decade, Bragdon finds their approach differs fundamentally from those in his study. In the mechanistic view of these firms, stewardship is an add-on that is subservient to their drive for profit. By contrast, in companies that have adopted the living system model, LAS is deeply woven into the value creation process - reflecting the fact that they see themselves as "living" and therefore integral to, rather than separate from, Nature and society.

Profit for Life builds on the brilliant work of Arie deGeus, former coordinator of Group Planning at Royal Dutch/Shell, and Harvard biologist Edward O. Wilson. DeGeus' classic, The Living Company, noted that long-lived companies had a collective consciousness, were sensitive to their environments, tried to work in harmony with the world around them, and strove to leave a legacy to future generations. Wilson tells us this collective consciousness is an expression of humanity's deep affinity for life, which he calls "biophilia," and that our biophilic instincts have evolved over thousands of generations of natural selection.

In my work as a teacher of servant leadership, I would highlight the paradigm shift Bragdon describes. The mission of leaders in LAS organizations is to serve and grow their people because that is the source of the firm's liveliness and capacity for growth. As Robert K. Greenleaf said: "The first order of business is to build a group of people who, under the influence of the institution, grow taller and become healthier, stronger and more autonomous." That seminal quote is used twice in the book to describe the power and generative capacity of LAS.

I highly recommend this book and will be using it regularly in our practice.

An Extraordinary Book: A Must Read.......2006-11-26

I intend to recommend Profit for Life to all my current MBA students. Next fall I am team teaching an MBA core course that combines Operations Management and Managerial Accounting. I intend to make the case that your book should be required reading and part of the course.

I became familiar with the work of W. Edwards Deming in 1990 and attended one of his four day seminars a year later. I also began to follow Peter Senge's work and later read Margaret Wheatley's book, Leadership and the New Science. Tom Johnson's book, Profit Beyond Measure, has been required reading in my Advanced Managerial Accounting elective at the MBA level.

Bragdon's book has brought the ideas, theories, and concepts discussed by these individuals together for me in a way that I could not have imagined. More importantly, he has not only taken their ideas to the next level, but done it in a way that provides a tangible blue print for how to change our current style of command and control management with its focus on profit maximization to a LAS Theory of Management.

The use of the sixteen focus companies from the LAMP INDEX and the author's ability ability to clearly show the distinctions in their style of management from the traditional management models that continue to be taught in almost all business schools, and the success these companies have achieved not just financially, gives those of us hoping to change management education and core business curriculums a new hope.

Excellent, highly readable information.......2006-11-18

This is not one of those lightweight business books that repeats its Chapter 1 message over and over. It's chock full of research-based information that anyone involved in the sustainability movement should have. The publisher is Peter Senge's non-profit, so if you're familiar with his excellent work over the years, this would make a great addition to your library. The author's passion for his subject is obvious from page one.

Outstanding motivation for teens.......2003-12-21

Mawi has concisely produced a book that will interest and inspire teens. I work with disadvantaged teens and I am making this book required reading. The book is easy to understand and Mawi's personal stories and wonderful illustrations make it fun.
It is very difficult to get teens excited about learning but Mawi has done it.

Don't bother.......2001-12-05

This is an extremely THIN book with little to offer. A few notes seem to have been stretched into 76 pages with large type, and big margins. Some "chapters" are 2-3 pages long. If you're interested in the topic, I'd recommend looking online for reports on corporate codes of conduct (done by the OECD, ILO, etc.).

Concise, instructive, engaging.......2000-09-22

A clear and objective look at the recent trend in corporate codes and the pressures on companies to adopt such codes. Manheim offers a brief yet complete history of these pressure tactics, giving greater insight into the motives behind the creation of third-party codes of conduct. The book describes various popular codes currently in use, and discusses in greater depth the latest global initiatives such as SA 8000 and the OECD Guidelines. I found this book extremely straightforward though enlightening.

As a student I was intrigued by the development of codes of conduct, which Manheim traces back before the New Left to the Progressive Era of the 1900's. As a consumer, I appreciated the dilemma many corporations now face when confronted with these rapidly proliferating codes. This book details the pros and cons of adopting a code of conduct. Short, yet thought-provoking and surprisingly engaging, and definitely apropos to current globalization trends. A recommended read for students of economics or international markets as well as for businesspersons facing the question of adopting codes. A must for those interested in globalization.
