Book Description
Old Guns & Whispering Ghosts brings to life the history, spirit, character, and contradictions of the Old West ...in the process of recounting the dramatic stories of its most legendary firearms. Author Jesse Hardin entices us into the fascinating world of shootists and drovers, defiant Indians and backwoods hunters. The dramatic photographs and inspiring text powerfully describe the period of rapid arms development and cultural change occurring between 1866 and 1916, from the close of the Civil War until what he considers to be "the last organized Indian raid," Pancho Villa's cross border attack on Columbus.
Old Guns & Whispering Ghosts "reads like a poem, and has all the depth and fascination of a psychological thriller," essayist Susan Weed writes. "History really IS more riveting than fiction! Here the lore and allure of firearms is used to shed light on not only the Wild West but the human condition, and our undying dreams."
Includes: John Wesley Hardin & the lonely truths about "shootists"; Teddy Roosevelt: cowboy hunter and conservationist; Buffalo Hunters & the mystique of the single-shot rifle; Ben Lilly, last of the mountain men; Elfego Baca & the most uneven gunfight in Western history; Frontier kids & early .22's; the importance of a code of honor, then and now; and much more!

Great Book.......2007-09-14
If you like old guns and western history you will love this book. I highly suggest this if you are cowboy minded.
Excellent historical account of old west firearms........2006-11-03
I am fairly new to the cowboy action shooting scene. I have a specific interest in American western history and how firearms were an intricate part of the history of the western expansion. Old Guns and Whispering Ghosts is truely a masterpiece of literature. Jesse Hardin presents a beautiful narrative document of the old west and some of the best firearms ever made in a finely printed hard cover book. The pictures are wonderful and the prose outstanding. From the start of the book one can not help but note the authors love of the subject. For those of you who love old western firearms, the history of the west and wonderfully presented narrative, this is the book you must add to your library.

This book is awesome.......2007-05-23
Wolf Rider is an amazing story about a high schooler named Andy Zadinsky. One day he got a phone call. It wasn't just an ordinary phone call; someone said that he had just killed a girl named Nina Klemmer. The guy on the other line said that his name was Zeke. Andy's friend, Paul, was next to him when he got the call and he called the police, but they said it was just a prank call. Paul also thought the call was a prank. At that point everybody thought the call was a prank, even Andy's dad! Everybody thought he was crying wolf, except for Andy himself! Will Andy find out if the call is true? Will he find out why Zeke called him and not another person? Does the description that Zeke said fit Nina? As Andy investigates further, he might find himself on the edge of trouble or even hurt! This suspenseful story was by Avi. I loved it and I would recommend this book to people of all ages! I liked this book because it was super cool and I could relate to it! I usually don't read a lot but this book was different! I COULD NOT PUT IT DOWN!!! If you ever get a call like Andy, never give up on finding who it is, it might actually be real!
Implausible.......2007-04-25
Wolf Rider was recommended to me by our local librarian, so I was expecting a well-written story. I was truly disappointed. The whole story is based on the premise that no adult authority figure takes a responsible teenager seriously when he reports receiving a phone call from a man who claims he has killed someone. His father, a college professor, who supposedly has a very close and positive relationship with his son, just blows him off. Then the police, school counselor and others begin to think the teenager himself is to blame, and is suffering from emotional distress over the death of his mom a year ago. But these conclusions are never justified by the boy's actions, which are reasonable.
Eventually the boy becomes totally disillusioned with the authorities as well as his father. I'm afraid that youngsters reading this might find the story more plausible than it is, and also become disillusioned and less likely to share their concerns with trustworthy adults.
This is a depressing story, as well as very implausible.

Andy a 15-year-old boy who receives a crank call. When he answers the call the so called zeke said I had just killed somebody. His father doesn't believe him so he has to go to the school counselor. She tells him about the boy who cried wolf so he decides to unmask the culprit. The theme of this book is verybody has a hero in them. Avi is a great writer he wrote this book to entertain the reader. With an adventure /mystery story I really liked it I would recommend this book to middle shcoolers and up. It was a really great book
Have fun reading :] jordan
Wolf Rider.......2007-02-27

andy zadinski a 15 year old boy in highschool goes to investigate on a call he gets one night and finds out more then he can handle. when andy tells his father about is crying wolf.
when andy is setting up an appoitment for nina and zeke andy relizes he is in the ride of his life.
i belive avi wrote this book for someone who needs help finding strenght to deal with the loss of a family member or friend. i would recomend this book to anyone who wants a horror thriler or someone who might need help dealing with a traagic happening and for them to not give up in life
Wolf Rider Book Review.......2007-01-16
Book Review for Wolf Rider
This is and amazing book written by AVI. She is an amazing author. This book has a lot of interesting aspects. It's full of some unanswered questions. Most questions you have to figure out yourself.
This novel is full of determination coming from a young man named Andy Zadinski, he is the main character. His determination is toward showing everyone that "Zeke" is real. This man Zeke called Andy and started saying that he killed someone and asked Andy what he should do now. Andy started talking to the man and asking him questions. Then the man on the other line hung up and Andy called the police. The police told him it was probably a prank but Andy and I believed not.
There are a lot of characters mentioned in this book. But there are only few main characters. First there is Andy, I told you a lot about him already, but there is more to be mentioned. Andy is a young man, with a lot of courage and determination. He sets his mind to one thing and doesn't let it go until people believe him. Now I should tell you about this mysterious Zeke guy. I think he is kind of freaky. He sounds like an old man. But you never know, it could be just a mean prank call.
Andy's house is kind of big. Andy has a big room too. He and his dad spend most of their time out of the house or hiding away in their rooms. Nina's house is kind of big too. She doesn't spend much time there though. Nina spends most of her time at the university. The university is where she goes to school and she also works as a librarian. It's got a lot of students, rooms, and teachers.
I think that's all I'm going to tell you about this book because I will probably give the ending away (that's the best part). It's best told by AVI. So you better go check it out from your local library. Read this awesome book.

Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House.......2007-05-20
I am in[..]and I read the Geronimo Stilton book called Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House for my final book report of the year. It was the best book ever! My favorite part about reading this Geronimo Stilton book was that it was very mysterious and had mummies, witches, and ghosts! That made the book even more exciting! I was holding my breath, waiting to see how the book would end. When I was reading, I could hardly wait to turn the page! I just couldn't read quick enough! Geronimo is a fun character, and I love reading about his adventures! Once I finished the book I was sad that it was over. I am so glad that there are many other books in the series! I definitely recommend this book and the rest of the Geronimo Stilton series to anyone reading this review. If you love great mysteries, I'm sure you will enjoy this book as much as I did! I hope my review was helpful and that you have a great time reading this book and other adventures about Geronimo!

Geronimo Stilton:
Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House
He's too fond of his fur! Cat and Mouse in a Haunted House is a spectacular book for anyone who loves fiction. The famous Geronimo Stilton, a mouse by the way, is also known for many other books such as the following: Curse of the Cheese Pyramid, Merry Christmas Geronimo and many others. On this adventure, Geronimo is off to see his great Aunt Sugarfur. On his way home, a storm blows in a Geronimo is stuck in the woods; which were deserted; or so he thought. That's when he discovers Cannycat Castle. Geronimo is a `fraidy mouse, but it's wet and cold outside and Geronimo is not liking the weather, so he decides to try out the castle. He finds the castle is haunted with past residents, including one with only one paw! He calls up his sister Thea, his cousin Trap, and his nephew Benjamin. Together they fight off ghouls, goblins and other creepy things to stay alive. If you like Harry Potter, you'll love this! This book is funny, scary, and action packed all rolled into one. It's number three in his fur-raising adventures, and another one you just don't want to miss.
Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House.......2006-03-14
Boo! Hi,I'm the ghost of Casey Gray.I just read a book called Geronimo Stiltion, Cat and Mouse in the Haunted House. It's a furr-azing book. If you like this book, there are over 20 others!!! I give it two thumbs up.In the back of the book, there is a map of were Geronimo works, what city he lives in, and what island he lives on. Oh No!!! The books are runing away!!! Come on, they're fast.
The mouse is just so loveable!!!.......2005-07-29
It's smart, it's humourous and it's clumpsy most of the time!
Kids of all age will love Geronimo. We have a quicker full set in Hong Kong printed in Chinese and I figure it's a great way to put the 2 language versions side by side to get kids interested in a 2nd / 3rd / 4th language! (Much easier than to get them sit down in front of TV in a foreign tongue.)
Don't I wish that I know Italian as well to apprecitate the original version.
A Scary Adventure for Geronimo!.......2004-05-24
This book is awesome! Geronimo gets lost in the forest and has to spend the night in a haunted house! Geronimo gets really excited when he finds a library full of books, but he gets scared away by a ghost. The scariest part was when the ghost of Duke Slicepaw came out!
I like the way the book is printed with the words being different colors and styles. It has lots of pictures and maps too. It makes it easier for me to read it. I am going to read all fifty titles as they are translated from Italian to English!

TOP-KNOTCH WEREWOLF YARN..........2007-08-25
I like werewolf stories, but when I first heard about this book, I thought that the plot sounded pretty far-fetched. Michael Gallatin is a sexy, handsome, debonair, and highly intelligent British spy, battling the Nazis. He is also a werewolf. Hmm, I thought, it just won't work. Well, I was wrong. This is a page turning, attention grabbing book that will simply not let the reader go, so engrossing and well-written a story does the author weave.
The author essentially tells two stories. One is the story of how Michael Gallatin became a werewolf and the man that would dare take on the Nazis. It is a powerful and sensitive telling of his formative years in Russia, weaving a mystical, magical tale. It is also a rip-roaring thriller of how Michael tangles with the Nazis to try and discover their super secret plot to destroy the Allies on D-day. Action packed and full of twists and turns, it is a hell of an adventure!
This is simply a superlative, well-written and suspenseful book that will take the reader by surprise. I simply could not put this book down! Bravo!
Sounded like a corny plot, but I'm glad I read it, it was actually good!.......2006-11-24
I almost didn't read this book because, though I like the author, the plot just sounded too ridiculous. I mean, werewolf supersoldier and Nazis? Come on!
But I do like the author and it got pretty good reviews, so I read it, and I'm glad I did. I thought it started off pretty slow, personally. I'm not sure if the writing wasn't as good at the beginning (as others have said) or if I was just prejudiced by thinking it was a silly plot. But I do like werewolf books, and this is the best one I've read -- not really for the Nazi plot, but the whole 'becoming a werewolf' I thought was interesting. And I really got caught up in the battle with the beast, when it happened, I thought it was a pretty well written fight scene.
The Nazi timeline had sort of a different feel, and someone else summed it up nicely. It's a lot of James Bond meets Indiana Jones sort of action, and once it picked up, was retty pleasant in a campy adventurous sort of way. Not that 'campy' is the right word, but that's the closest I can get right now.
In summary, I'm glad I read it. If you like werewolves, definitely check it out. Give it at least 100 pages to get into it, until he actually lands in France in the Nazi storyline, and meets the werewolves in the other one.
Pick's up half way through........2006-07-10
The werewolf story has never really intrigued me because of the fact the wolf is always portrayed as a hero instead of a villian. This story by Mcammon follows the same formula. The Werewolf in this story is a secret agent trying to stop a secret plot by the germans on D-day. Mccammon is still the best at putting his heros into "REAL" danger but his cliff-hanger style of writing got in the way of the story. He basically split the novel in two parts, one about the current secret agent story and the other about the werewolf's childhood. At the climax of one story he would switch to the other. This worked better in his novel MINE than in this book.
The Wolf's Hour - McCammon does it again........2006-03-29
Robert McCammon does it again with The Wolf's Hour. Proving himself to be one of North America's leading writers again and again. The Wolf's Hour defies genres - its in a class all of its own. Michael Gallatin aka Mikhail Gallantinov a gutsy Russian werewolf who has taken up residence in London England. He is a british spy who just happens to have an edge over the enemy. a great werewolf story and a great war story. This one will satisfy every need. Don't miss it.
Interesting Mix of Ideas.......2005-09-04
Robert McCammon is an extremely talented writer who I usually enjoy. In the case of The Wolf's Hour, he has taken the drama of war and added a werewolf as a spy. Does it work? Yes and no. The werewolf is a man named Michael Gallatin, and he has the ability to change into a werewolf at will. So don't expect a horror novel in any way, shape, or form. McCammon has mixed war with a horror element, but I don't know if it was necessary. I almost saw this as two novels: the back story of how Michael became a wolf, and a story about a spy in World War II. As a spy Michael doesn't turn into a wolf very often, and it is for this reason I'm not sure there needs to be a werewolf in this novel. A simple war story would have worked fine. However, I loved the back story of how he became a wolf. I could see it being a separate novel.
Do I recommend this book? Yes, because I liked both the war story and wolf story, but I caution against expecting a creepy book to read late at night.

if you are open to paradigm shifts.......2005-06-03
This book appears to have not been edited at all. It took me a few pages to get past all the typos; I mean seriously, a LOT of them. But then you realize it really flows. Some of the typos are actually creative wordings. Even though they appear at first to be mistakes, they are purposeful and add to the free and creative spirit of the book. In a way, I suppose having all the mistakes and creative use of new words is a functional part of helping to facilitate the mind to shift. If it was all tightly written, it would definitely have a different feel, and the message would come through differently, and perhaps not in quite the right way, if that makes any sense. The content itself is fantastic. I found it enlightening, yet simple to understand. It pulls you in and takes you through, and you find yourself just following. But it is also provocative and it makes you think. You still have to decide and figure it out for yourself! What I love about it is, it gives real information, that to me makes more sense than almost anything I've ever heard. I frequently felt pulled back into the thoughts and feelings of my childhood, to a time when I sensed what was real, before it all got skewed by family and societal conditioning. Also, I have read many books in all the areas of spirituality and self-help, and this seemed to pull it all together. It brings it all right down to the very essence. In some ways, I feel that all the books I have previously read prepped me and helped me to easily digest and integrate the ideas in the book. On the other hand, you could read just this book alone, and get the same basic idea that all the other books are trying to convey, but without all those other (now seemingly) unnecessary details.

A dissenting view.......2007-10-07
I'll be the "designated" dissenting view here amongst all of these positive reviewers. This was not my cup of tea. That assuredly has alot to do with my estimation of this book. Above and beyond the rather off-the-wall mysticism and somewhat pseudo-native American spirituality, the editing is horrible. Misspelt words everywhere! I don't care how bad a book is in terms of its content, at least the author and publisher can check the spelling for god's sake! To me, that kind of error says alot about the author and the lack of professionalism in general. I just thought his viewpoint was hokey.
I'm glad I stumbled on this one.......2006-07-27

last Cry: native American Prophecies Tales of the End Times.......2000-04-20
I found this book to be incredibly insightful and informitive based completely in a shamanic light. Even those that do not follow this path can gather a lot of meaning from this book in regards to this: We are all from the same place...this earth. All fear and hate based on skin color, orientation, gender, species, etc...is completely futile. If people as a whole would understand themselves, being honest with themselves...I doubt that we as a whole would have any more hate and fear.
Powerful and filled with insight into our own beginnings........1999-01-06
This book resonated with the essence of my very being. It brings remembrance of our beginnings on this planet and in this dimension if one can accept it. It seems as though Robert Ghostwolf has hurried to get the information out and therefore, at times I did not have a full comprehension of the symbols such as the colored serpents. I have only a bit of native American blood and know only a little about the ancient religious beliefs of the people. Call me a crazy if you wish, but the book (for the most part) rang true to the depths of my being, and why not? Is it more outrageous than the stories in the Holy Bible from which I also draw great comfort and truth?

Customer Reviews:
Werewolves are Cool!.......2006-09-14
This is probably Ms. La Fevers best book to date! "Werewolf Rising" is the story of Luc, a young boy who is being raised by an uncle and aunt after the tragic death of his parents when he was quite small. Luc is on the verge of his 13th birthday, and suddenly his whole life starts to get weird! First he notices that his sense of smell is sharper and he is stronger. He punches out the school bully who has picked on him forever, and doesn't even realize he's hit him until the kid is on the ground! And he can run--fast! He even wins a race at school, something he has never done before! Luc's best friend can't figure it out, and neither can Luc.
Instead of being happy for him his uncle, who has never been very kind in the first place, now begins to act extremely hostile towards Luc, who is confused and angered by it. Luc is also being haunted by a nightmare of a hideous monster that, when he confronts it in his dreams, turns out to be himself.
Enter Ranger, a tall, dark, mysterious man who appears at their front door and literally swoops Luc up and takes him away to go live with his "pack". Luc discovers that he is actually a lycanthian, or werewolf, and that Ranger is his father's brother. He is shocked to discover that his father was a full-blooded shape-shifter and that Luc himself will take wolf-form for the first time on his 13th birthday. There is much to learn before he can do it successfully! Meanwhile, there are those who are afraid of his pack and want to destroy them because they think they are monsters.
Luc must come to grips with not only a complete life-style change but also with the revelation that the death of his parents may not have been an accident after all. How he chooses to deal with this information will prove who is master, boy or beast...
I was sucked into this book from the first page. Luc is a great hero--very real, "I can relate to this guy" sort of character. When he finally gets to be a wolf I wanted to be one too!! Unlike other werewolf stories, these werewolves aren't monsters--they are a community that is held together by their traditions and honor. Luc must learn about submission, loyalty, and truth if he is going to fit in with his new family.
Definitely a "must own" book! You will want to read this one again and again!

Excellent novel.......2004-08-23
I must say that I had enjoyed the novel. It did an excellent job of portarying King Albrecht as a hero worthy of renown. All the intrigues were excellently crafted. It did an excellent job of culminating all the Werewolf lose ends. My only foible with the book is that the aftermath is a bit vague.

A Real Good Book.......2005-10-11
Shadow of The Wolf is a good book because it has sad parts in it and it shows love for the wolf in the book Shadow Of The Wolf.I give it four stars because it is one of the best books I have read in the many books I have read.In the book a wolf gets trapped in a Indian girls trap her best friend sees the wolf in the trap the Indian girl is about to go get her dad till her friend says wait! the girl turns around and says what she says you can't take this wolfs life the Indian girl said but my dad will be mad she said if you don't tell you dad he will not find out the Indian girl said ok.the girl went to get the wolf out of the trap the finally got the wolf out it ran for the woods and after that there friends came and they had to get water so the two girls went to get water and it was snowing so hard they could not see the wolf came out and showed them the way. when ever the they got lost the wolf was there for them.
