A Worthy Sequel.......2007-09-03
I bought Decoy Princess not sure if I would enjoy the book or not. To my great surprise, I LOVED it. So much so that I immediately went out and picked up Princess at Sea the next day. The characters are wonderful, you can never tell exactly if you should trust them or not, and the story, while I think the story here in the sequel might be ever so slightly weaker than the one in the first book, is engaging.
I was so sad to log in to see that there is no third book planned! Although the characters CAN be left where they are, one more book - just one, it's all I ask! - just to see how things go after the events in this book would be great. Ms. Cook, if you're out there.. please, one more Princess book!
All in all, a wonderful read. Highly suggested.. just make sure you read Decoy Princess first. You won't be disappointed!
A rollicking adventure.......2007-06-03
Full with enjoyable plot twists and heart-wrenching discoveries, this novel was pure delight. Although it would be vital to have read the previous book in this 2 part series, I'd recommend it highly to those who enjoy strong female characters, a splash of romance, and some high-seas adventures! At the end, I found myself quite sad that there is no 3rd book planned for this enjoyable cast of characters.
Failed to meet expectations.......2007-02-09
I thought Princess at Sea had a lot of potential but didn't quite manage to pull it off. I wanted to read a story about a young woman who discovers within herself the means to achieve her goals - and become a stronger person in the process. But the central character Tess is constantly tearing herself down and has massive self-esteem issues which are never really resolved. She spends far too much time obsessed with which man she likes best and so she fails to see things which are right in front of her. I do appreciate this attempt to make Tess more 'real' and fragile but when the only perspective offered is her opinion of herself - she is not a very likable character. If the story had been told in third person I suspect it would have been brilliant because the reader would see Tess's heroism and bravery in an equal balance with her self-esteem issues. As it is, I did not feel particularly empowered by reading this book - in fact I was left a little irritable.
Absorbing Read.......2007-01-13
Princess at Sea by Dawn Cook is the second in a series and is a fun read. Somehow, Tess's character takes on more meaning as the story develops but without any specific intentions......more like unfurling of a yarn.
My favourite passage is where she wants to get the wind, to make it obey her wishes. The prose is almost lyrical and it's amazing to encounter such literature in today's fantasy genre'. Tolkiens was an exception and fantasy writing these days mostly is not about the quality of prose and language.
Awaiting the third book eagerly.
Another fun fantasy from a great author.......2006-11-09
With so many fantasy novels glutting the market right now that seem to be carbon copies of each other, it's refreshing to find an author like Dawn Cook. Her latest, "Princess at Sea," is another shining example of how talented an author she is.
"Princess at Sea" is a sequel to "Decoy Princess" and in many ways, it's necessary to have read the first book to understand some of the people and concepts in "Princess at Sea." Tess, formerly the crown princess and now with a much deeper position in the royal government, is the new ambassador to the kingdom and is accompanying her sister and her sister's new husband on their honeymoon voyage. When they are kidnapped and held hostage by pirates, Tess goes all out to save them.
As with so many of Cook's books, the storyline seems straightforward until the author throws a major twist in the plot. You just never know what she'll come up with, which is what makes her books so fascinating. I find the premise behind the Princess series one of the most ingenious I've read in a long time, so I'm hoping that there will be more books in this series. Unfortunately, the author states on her website that she was only planning on writing "Decoy Princess" and its sequel. Let's hope she changes her mind!

Simply Incredible.......2006-12-31
I just adored McKillip's novel. A wonderful story, combined with excellently developed characters, and descriptive wirting that takes you soaring through her world, make this novel one of the most memorable you will ever read. For lack of a more fortified adjective, it was amazing. I've read McKillip before and been a bit disappointed, to be honest; but this was just a lovely, lovely, lovely book, one to cherish forever.
Reading that goes beyond age limit.......2006-07-08
This is the first McKillip story I ever read, the book that got me hooked to this author's writing. Patricia is an inspiration to writers, and a continual source of entertainment for readers. I know the listing says juvenile, for readers ages 6-12, but that is just wrong. I enjoyed this story at age 23 and I'd enjoy it just as much now at 44.
Everyone should read this book, no matter what your age is!
My favorite book of all time........2006-02-28
I am so glad they reprinted this book. For years it was out of print and incredibly hard to find.
I found this book when I was in 5th grade, and read my copy till it fell apart. If I had a spare day, I would just sit down and read it, wrapping myself in its words like a warm blanket. I still read it once a year.
This book really saved me as a kid. It taught me that even though I was young, and poor, and hurting, I had the world at my feet. It gave me the courage to stand up and take on the world.
Delightful.......2006-02-21
This is a delightful story of love, magic, and healing. It's not the typical fantasy story of good versus evil. It's simply a story of a girl struggling with the world around her until she can find a place in it for herself.
WONDERFUL!!!!!.......2006-01-02
oh my...i loved this book!! i read it in one day. i couldn't put it down. It is definately one of McKillip's best, in my opinion. I also enjoyed reading her other books The Forgotten Beats of Eld, and Ombria in Shadow. But of those three this is most definately my favorite. The romance and mystery of the magic in this book is what kept lighting my interest and imagination. She uses words in wonderful ways to spark your imagination and wraps you in the story with the flow and rhythm of the sentences. I loved this book and want to read it over and over again. Definately one of my all time favorites.

Box needs work.......2006-11-10
My daughter (4) loves these read it yourself books. The box (packaging) it comes with isn't very sturdy though, and we have had to find alternate holders to store the CD in. Would have preferred the cd to come with a case, rather than a clip in to the box cover.
storytelling fun for young children at xmas and any other time!.......2005-12-23
A perfect gift and sound experience for young children with original voices from the movies!
Simple stories told in simple ways to initiate children about sharing and caring, with Christmas as a reference for "holiday season" only.
The voice characterizations are fantastic and very appealing (Russi Taylor is top-notch as the recreation of Cinderella's God-Mother); the music (traditional Xmas music) is really "background", subdued and nice enough to set the mood.
Three colourful books with exquisite Disney illustrations tell the stories with the printed text of the narration!
AND... there's even a NEW character named after ME, François, I must humbly say!
So, who could ask for anything more?

But soon Azuri falls in love with Thalo, a royal Orcan guard, and her world falls apart! Soon, Princess Azuri is faced with the most difficult decision of her life: Should she save the world or follow her heart?!
Customer Reviews:
A fun, albeit short, comic........2007-05-12
You can't help but wonder- what got cut out of this comic? Even the small mangas don't reach this size. The art is good, the storyline (if not more than a bit overused) is clear, and it's a good way to spend ten minutes.
If you want nice art, there's nice art. If you want a good storyline and a winding plot... then you better find something else.
The American Formula- Manga Style! .......2006-07-14
East meets West in Sea Princess Azuri as Erica Reis shows just how good a Westerner can sit down for a spell a draw out page after page of fab. illustrated story. (And they said Americans have no attention span for this sort of thing! just kidding ;) ) Anyway, yeah, it can get cliched and there is a lot of plot exbidition (thank you American comics!) Putting clothing on merfolk is very interesting, especially the way Reis designs it. (I would never have thought to . . !) A good way to make her story and characters very distinct from other mermaid ideas. Very ingenius, because it helps show that these two major civilizations have a war based history and with each other, giving a very fragile air to the coupling of the betrothed. Azuri is a free spirit but she will to do her best to keep focus on the big picture and marry Prince Unagi even though she seems to doubt her abilities as a budding adult and authority figure. Thalo has his own set of problems as a young RoyalGuard. It's a good read for Young Adults, and anyone who likes undersea adventures!
A cliche to put an end to all cliches.......2006-05-17
Sea Princess Azuri is beautifully drawn. The idea of mer-people that aren't willowy beauties is quite a new take; the way its handled is even realistic. The idea of different species of merpeople and everything about the world and the setting was great. A thing to be especially applauded is the way the heroine, instead of a skinny, busty model-type beauty, is big-nosed, big-eared chunky and adorable mermaid.
However, as for the subject matter, I was disappointed. 'Princess who is adventurous doesn't act princess-like forced to be engaged to evil prince of another country to join them together but in love with a civilian'. Wow. I've never heard of a story like that before.
The dialogue is cliched and formulatc. Much of the dialogue is there simply to tell the audince something they need to know, not something the characters naturally would have said. The mother delivers every single cliched "You are a princess--behave like one" line that has ever been thought of in the space of twenty-something pages. Really, now. Not a single new concept was used for the actual bare bones of the story line.
The author also needs a little more knowledge of boys. I know for a fact that two teenage boys when together do not chat about their origin, their insecurities and how fond they are of eachother. It was a typical girl's fantasy of how she wished boys acted around eachother...
This is a great tween story, don't get me wrong. It's adorable and has no awkward or bad subject matter. But for an older audience it holds little appeal, and has no great depth or ingenuity. Its a tired out subject that has been done many times before and utterly predictable. Building a whole story on 'save the world or follow you heart' is pretty silly anyway. It sounds so incredibly selfish.
In any case, Azuri is a much better heroine than I had originally anticipated, but I just can't over how old the storyline is.
Great for tweens.
A Manga my Tween can Read!.......2006-03-16
I stumbled upon this title quite by accident-it's certainly nothing I'd pull off the shelf on my own. My daughter became addicted to it after seeing it in Tokyo Pop's mail manga magazine, and so that meant I had to listen to her read it out loud. [An 8 Year old girl's favorite pastime.]
If Disney were marketing domestic manga, Sea Princess Azuri would definitely be it. The story revolves around a species called the Orcans, not mermaids in a traditional sense...they're killer whale/humanoid hybrids. No, there is no deep back-story to explain their existence; this manga should be enjoyed on a story-telling level and not for some deep scientific analysis. Azuri is an Orcan Princess, and one of her main duties as Princess is to marry Prince Unagi of the Eel people. Since childhood she resigned herself to this fate because she's loyal to what's best for her people...but then she grows up! She meets a handsome, albeit nerdy, royal guard named Thalo.
Drama ensues when jealous Unagi discovers Azuri's fondness for Thalo and arranges for Thalo to be sent to *gasp* live on dry land. Now this is when my daughter stopped reading to explain to me just how cruel it all really was [!!], and that's when I realized I'd spent only $5 for one of the best afternoons with my child involving a shared passion of manga reading.
Seriously, if you're looking for a manga title for your daughter that doesn't contain sexually androgynous boys or nightmarish dreamscapes, Sea Princess Azuri is your best bet.
Under the sea..........2006-03-07
Another of Tokyo Pop's original American manga titles. This one however is fully anthropomorphic!
Taking place in an undersea kingdom, you might think this would be your standard Little Mermaid ripoff. But, the merfolk here are actually half-orca called Orcans. They have had an unsettling peace with the Eel people for a while, and both kingdoms wish to settle their differences by having the heirs to each throne get married. The pricess Azuri wants to live a more carefree life though, and spend time with her best friend Thalo who is in the royal guard.
On the day that she is supposed to meet her future husband, Azuri befriends an orphened unicorn seal and takes it as her pet. She then encounters the Prince Unagi of the Eel people and starts to recongnize his charms. At the same time, Thalo is confessing his true feelings for Azuri to her.
This was a pretty short volume for your average Tokyo Pop graphic novel, at only about half the size of their standard publications. But still the artwork is very good, and the story is enchanting. It's one you have to buy into a little at first though, otherwise you might get lost in the inner-workings of this self-contained little world. Great fun for anthro-fanatics!
Book Description
This enchanting Scottish-dog story retells in word and picture a true episode from Bonnie Prince Charley's perilous flight through the Highlands in 1746. As the redcoat hunt closes in on his remote island cave, Prince Charley (a dashing Scottish deerhound) yields himself up to his one slender hope for deliverance - a canny wee slip of a Skye terrier named Flora McDonald. Armed only with her courage, intelligence, and uncanny gift of musical communication with wild animals, Flora must outface the vanities of the Prince, the terrors of the deep, the muskets of the king, and the pitfalls of the drawing room to smuggle her royal protege "Over the Sea to Skye". Across a sombre warp of history, illustrator Rob Brown and author Robert Hutchinson have magically woven a bright woof of imagination.
Customer Reviews:
Beautiful, original re-telling of Scottish lore!.......1997-11-20
The animals around the misty Isles of Scotland get to tell this tale of adventure as escape of Bonnie Prince Charley through the Highlands in 1746. He's now a Scottish deerhound, beholding to Skye terrier Fora MacDonald. Robert Hutchinson and Rob Brown join forces to tell and illustrate the story beautifully. I especially liked the way Flora communicates with "free" animals who bravely come to her aid. Such a talented lady--she speaks otter, owl, porpoise, marten, and deer! A lovely, lyrical journey sure to delight parents and children alike.
