A great find!.......2007-09-09
I was handed Pure Sea Glass:Discovering Nature's Vanishing Gems and asked to review it for an on line magazine I used to write for. Until then I had little or no interest in the bits of glass I occasionally picked up along the beaches visited in the course of my travels.
After reading the book, accomplished in one evening, I went looking for that jar of glass stashed somewhere in the garage and dumped it out on the table so that I could better sort through and identify the various colors and pieces, most new but some very old like a small lavendar triangle picked up along the Oregon Coast and a very dark blue from Hawaii.
Since, I've become an avid collector of beach glass and secret places to find it. What great fun! A good read, informative and totally satisfying.
Learning More About Sea Glass.......2007-08-10
Great book. The photographs were excellent and the information about the origin of sea glass and where it is most likely to appear on the beach was well presented. Our 14 year old enjoyed learning more about sea glass just as we did.
I plan to buy copies for all our coastal friends as house warming gifts this year.
Pure Sea Glass Book.......2007-08-06
I was pleased with the condition of the book when I received it. It was almost like new. Will certainly order more books.
A Real Joy To Read.......2007-06-02
Richard LaMotte did a wonder-filled job of putting together this informative and comprehensive book on sea glass. I honestly have enjoyed reading every page. I had no idea that there was so much history hidden in every piece of glass, and even though I have collected glass over the years, I never understood the relationship between winds and tides and the weather that deposits these beautiful little gems on our shores. Mr. LaMotte shares all this knowldege with such passion that reading his book not only feed my intellect but also inspired the beachcomber in me. And, the photographs are simply beautiful. Every image works to support as well as illustrate all the topics that are being discussed. The entire book is truly a piece of art in itself. I will read and re-read this book. It is a must for anyone and everyone who loves sea glass.

This book is lovely and interesting to read. It has fueled my passion for collecting more sea glass.
Book Description
More and more leaders and their organizations are becoming convinced in the business case for creating a "coaching culture". This book provides the tools for leaders and teams to develop a common language and shared protocol and a learning and development orientation towards people. These critical dynamics support the entire culture becoming a "feedback-rich, high-performance" organization.
For this to occur, a common coaching approach driven by coaching UP, DOWN, and SIDEWAYS is necessary. Coaching flows in all directions to managers, peers, and direct reports. Coaching becomes the normal "way we do things around here."
The premise of "The Heart of Coaching" was never more true. "As coaching becomes a predominant cultural practice...it will create a performance-focused, feedback-rich organization capable of creating and sustaining a competitive advantage."
This "Second Edition" makes the use of the enhanced coaching model easier to use than ever, since it now includes a colorized snapout reference card. Additionally, several powerful enhancements of the Transformational Coaching methodology make it one of the most comprehensive, and systematic approaches to coaching you will find today.
It guides leaders, managers, and entire teams who want to enhance or master their coaching skills through 2 critical aspects of coaching: 1. establishing authentic, healthy and respectful coaching relationships, and 2. organizing and conducting the actual coaching conversations that lead to commitments for positive results that both the coach and the coachee are willing to support.

Awesomely helpful book on coaching!.......2007-08-28
This will become one of your go-to books re: the coaching process. I know it's one of mine! Incredible insights as well as lots of advice, tricks, tips, etc. A must buy for coaches, or those who aspire to become coaches.
The Heart of Coaching: Using Transformational Coaching to Create a High-Performance Coaching Culture (3rd Edition).......2007-03-29
This book does have some good background information about coaching. It is pretty dry though. If you want to learn about coaching, take an accredited coaching certification program. I did, and this was one of our required reads. It happened to be my least favorite and gave me very little practical information to use during a coaching session. If you want to read an inspiring, empowering book, read Breaking the Rules by Kurt Wright.
A sound and practical coaching method.......2005-09-28
Tom Crane goes to the true essence of coaching. He developed a comprehensive coaching method to transform knowledge into performance and action into results. A must read not only for coaches, but also for managers and leaders.
Coaching for Results.......2005-05-20
This book gets to the "heart" of the matter - pun intended. "Coaching," according to author Thomas G. Crane, "is a healthy, positive, and enabling process that develops the capacity of people to solve today's business problems." Bingo! Crane focuses on what coaches can achieve focusing their coaching on three principles: building a foundation of trust, learning together, and forwarding the action (and the self) forward. This what Crane calls transformational coaching. Consider it to be the art and the practice of helping others learn about their strengths, their weaknesses, and their opportunities for development. Tightly written and with ample diagrams and charts, this book is a treasure chest of ideas of executive coaches and an easy to follow guide for all managers who desire to coach for results. Don't simply read "The Heart of Coaching," practice its principles and you will help those you coach grow and develop.
Life Changing Skills.......2003-02-15
As a senior manager with a major international manufacturing entity, I am continually educating my superiors, peers and subordinates about the value of developing exceptional coaching skills. After extensive research, The Heart of Coaching was the written vehicle we chose to develop these skills within our organization.
The most important aspect of this work, that sets it apart from all others, is it's focus on changing yourself and your own behavior rather than changing others. It is written with a simplicity that creates immediate understanding of the most effective behaviors of leaders who combine "heart" with results.
The results in our organization have been astounding. Not just a change in the effectiveness of individuals, but a cultural evolution.
Book Description
Val's Blog "A tremendously useful field guide specifically written for developers down in the trenches...waiting for the killer solution..."
Web users are getting tired of the traditional web experience. They get frustrated losing their scroll position; they get annoyed waiting for refresh; they struggle to reorient themselves on every new page. And the list goes on. With asynchronous JavaScript and XML, known as "Ajax," you can give them a better experience. Once users have experienced an Ajax interface, they hate to go back. Ajax is new way of thinking that can result in a flowing and intuitive interaction with the user.
Ajax in Action helps you implement that thinking--it explains how to distribute the application between the client and the server (hint: use a "nested MVC" design) while retaining the integrity of the system. You will learn how to ensure your app is flexible and maintainable, and how good, structured design can help avoid problems like browser incompatibilities. Along the way it helps you unlearn many old coding habits. Above all, it opens your mind to the many advantages gained by placing much of the processing in the browser. If you are a web developer who has prior experience with web technologies, this book is for you.

Clear Concise, with Practical Examples.......2007-10-10
This book is a little outdated at this point, but provides clear and practical examples of using AJAX. It was very easy to understand, and most of the content still remains up to date.
Shines over the rest ..........2007-04-23
Somehow I got hold of my first book on AJAX: Head Rush Ajax (Head First) and sure it gave me an intro to XMLHttpRequest - but that's all it did. I browsed through the informal/conversational writings of the book in one evening. And wondered, is there all to it? The current web-world is spinning around Web2.0 and AJAX technology - there must be more than that. Then I went back to the store and picked this book up - I am glad I did. It covers many more areas that an AJAX programmer must equip himself/herself, topics relating to MVC pattern, working with the server side programs and performance, security, as well as the basic topic: building standalone RIA using CSS, DOM and DHTML.
This one definitely shines over the rest on the topic, however, for a hands-on programmer (that's me), I would appreciate more code samples will help.
Good At What it Does--But Not About AJAX.......2007-04-04
Finally, I am so happy to see what some other reviewers say. This book is not really that much about AJAX. I feel that I have wasted my AJAX budget. Sure, there is lots of valuable stuff here but the percentage of this book that is about AJAX proper.
I would say that 5 of the 13 chapters are about AJAX but that of course means that 8 are not at all about AJAX. At the same time, I got "Pragmatic AJAX" by the always funny Ben Galbraith. If you need to focus on AJAX--read Pragmatic AJAX.
Ajax in Action.......2007-03-12
It does more than introduce ajax to the reader. It also covers a little bit of programming methodology and some things to keep in mind when writing even a simple application. Overall it is a good book, but not if you are new to programming and especially if you are new to JavaScript.
It's About Web Architecture... Buy it for that reason.......2007-03-05
I also will agree with the comment: "Principles of Web architecture and design... and a few words about Ajax". However, I find it to be an incredible book. It goes in depth about the Model View Controller, Design Patterns, and Refactoring. All terms that I did not know in depth. I actually skipped over a lot of the how-to AJAX stuff and read about the design theories. I can't wait to read it again.
The Appendix on how JavaScript works is worth the price of the book alone. NOW I understand how that crazy prototype works.

Book Description
Prototype and Scriptaculous are libraries that extend standard Ajax. They make it easier to program Ajax and provide powerful features like drag and drop and animation. In this book, developers learn by playing and see how the libraries work in the real world.
As experience with Ajax increases, developers want the standard Ajax capabilities they repeatedly use to be preprogrammed for them--and that's exactly what Ajax libraries do for them. They reduce the pain of handling cross-browser inconsistencies, they add useful language features, and provide sophisticated functionality. Of these, Prototype is the most popular JavaScript and Ajax framework for low-level user interface features such as animation, drag and drop, and pre-built widgets. Together, they free the developer up to concentrate on building the application. They make a rich user experience easy to achieve.
This book guides the reader through the Prototype and Scriptaculous libraries feature-by-feature. In just 350 pages, readers will find over 100 small working examples to help them explore the libraries. As well, they will develop a web-based image gallery that teacher them how to use Prototype and Scriptaculous in the real-world.
Customer Reviews:
Top-notch tome.......2007-06-25
Javascript has exploded onto the web development scene in the last few years, and powers much of the web 2.0 and Ajax revolution. Every web developer now needs to know how to do common Ajax tasks. Thankfully, Prototype and Scriptaculous In Action makes it both easy and enjoyable.
This is a comprehensive book. The size (510 pages) was initially intimidating, but Prototype and Scriptaculous In Action is exceedingly well written and a genuine pleasure to read. The thorough and thoughtful organization of the book provides some real structure to the discussion, making complex subjects easily digestible. This is the defacto bible of Prototype and Scriptaculous, and these days I turn to this book more than anything else on my shelf.
The book is divided up into four multi-chapter parts, any of which could stand on it's own as a definitive guide. The chapters are full of useful examples, and there's strong emphasis given to migrating existing sites to Prototype and Scriptaculous, which is a major plus. You could turn to any section of the book and immediately see how to inject some new behavior into your existing application, but if you take the time to read from cover-to-cover you'll be rewarded with some deep understanding of both the libraries and Javascript itself.
I'll summarize the four parts of the book:
Part 1, Getting Started, introduces the Prototype and Scriptaculous libraries, focusing heavily on Prototype and Ajax. There's a lot of information on re-designing an existing site for Ajax. Two full chapters are devoted to Prototype's Ajax features. You can get up and running VERY quickly after glancing through these chapters. There's also a lot of depth, and consideration is given to the pervasive effects Ajax has on architectural issues and the new ways that an application will have to manage HTTP traffic.
Part 2, Scriptaculous Quickly, covers effects, controls and drag-n-drop. This is hands-down the best Scriptaculous documentation currently available, anywhere. The core effects are explored and tweaked, and there's lot of very practical examples demonstrating some of the niftiest stuff, like running effects in parallel versus sequentially. And the drag-and-drop coverage is incredibly clear, making it easy, almost trivial, to implement. The Scriptaculous coverage is indispensable, and you'll return to it again and again if you implement Scriptaculous-enabled pages.
Part 3, Prototype in Depth, explores Prototype's Javascript-oriented features. There's a fantastic chapter on functions contexts, and the discussion of closures is one of the best I've seen. There's a lot of information about Javascript fundamentals, and how Prototype can be used to implement inheritance, address arrays, and manipulate the DOM in the browser.
And finally, Part 4 Advanced Topics, has two unrelated chapters. The first chapter overhauls an example app, giving it a Prototype and Scriptaculous makeover. The last chapter is about integration with Ruby on Rails. Prototype was initially written as the Ajax interface to Rails, so there's some strong integration.
As a long-time enterprise web developer, dealing with Javascript has always been a chore. But now I actually (gasp) look forward to tasks that involve Javascript. I'm a convert, and I have Prototype and Scriptaculous in Action to thank.
Excellent.......2007-05-22
I wrote a longer review that Amazon has apparently lost. Oh well. This is an excellent book, very well written. The authors are the rarest kind of technical author: they can actually construct prose that is pleasant to read, not deadly boring, but which works well as a reference book later. The book's organized thoughtfully--it's certainly much more than just an API reference. There's also quite a lot of general advanced Javascript information here, too.
There's at least one other book on these libraries in production from Pragmatic Programmers. If you're considering that, I strongly suggest downloading the sample chapters of both books and comparing. The Crane book is much more appealing to me (not to mention it's available now, not in six months).
Basic libraries coverage with a good example application........2007-04-19
This book lacked detailed coverage of the programming techniques and advanced topics of prototype and scriptaculous. The authors covered the basics by discussing only the API's of the libraries (more attention was given to scriptaculous API's, even though its usage is obvious and prototype API's are more extensive). With 500 pages and the libraries as the title, I expected details about the inner workings of the API's and discussions about its usages/ applications. Instead, 150 pages were devoted to verbose repetitive coverage of scriptaculous' API, which could easily have fitted into 50 pages at most. ALL of the info on scriptaculous could easily have been read online at its wiki site - the book provided no further insight (ch. 5 is especially useless)! Prototype's coverage was decent, but lacked details on several parts of its API. Although prototype and scriptaculous are tightly integrated with Rails, there was only 1 chapter devoted to its discussion, which served more like an overview than a usage guide. Based on content on the libraries alone, I would give this book 3 stars. However, if you're in need of an example application, then it may deserve 4 stars. This book provides a good example of applying prototype's ajax and scriptaculous web 2.0 techniques to a photo gallery website. It shows the advantages these libraries have over plain javascript and dhtml. The extra 100 pages wasted on scriptaculous would better serve Rails' RJS templates or a more complete/ thorough discussion of prototype. Of course it can be argued that the book is not titled, "Prototype, Scriptaculous, and Rails in Action," but it should be.

This book will without any doubt change your life, by changing your mind about the concept of "money". So many of us were brought up with the idea of money as a finite resource, which you had to compete for. This book is desgined to release every preconcieved idea that is holding us all back from wealth. The basic premise of this book is that becoming wealthy is a science, that once understood, and replicated will create wealth in everyone's life. Wealth is as infinite as the creative mind. Create ideas, take action and abundance will flow.

The Science of Getting Rich.......2007-10-08
Obviously written about the turn of the century. If you can get past the outdated lingo and examples, the meat of the text is rich and rewarding. Women be warned, it was written in a time that we were not considered citizens. Again, if you can get past the lingo, the text is well worth the read.
Awesome book.......2007-10-08
This is a must have book. It was easy to read and I believe everyone should read this book if you are looking for keys to happiness.
This is it........2007-09-21
I have long experienced aspects of this teaching without ever realizing it. When you finally get into the whys and hows of this idea, you too should see very clearly what I am suggesting.
I particularly like the references to Christ and his teachings. It may seem contrary at first, stick to it. Jesus told us we could do these things if we only had the slightest bit of faith.
Enjoy.

A must for invitations!.......2005-01-10
I run a small stationery and invite business (Quite the InviteTM) and have found this to be an invaluable tool for my business. This book covers all possibilities. Not everyone has use for this book, but anyone who does lots of entertaining or needs to make sure their invites follow protocol, this is a must.
the definitive guide to elegant stationery.......2003-04-18
A lovely reference book on formal and semi-formal stationery, calling cards, and the proper wording for invitations. Filled with enthusiasm after reading the book, I went into my local stationers to price some of this fancy stuff and concluded that I was better off with a computer and printer. Not that I wouldn't love engraved letter sheets, monogrammed notes, and house stationery, but it would run into the hundreds of dollars. And that's just for the letter sheets and engraved envelopes! However, it's wonderful to press my nose against the window and dream about spending my children's inheritance on engraved correspondence cards!
The sections on the content of one's correspondence were the weakest part of the book. The four-line formula condolence notes did not strike me as particularly consoling, for instance. "Miss Manners' Basic Training: Communication" and other books specific to letter writing give much better tips on how to compose meaningful messages. But Crane's remains the lofty goal for elegant correspondence.
A desk reference with attitude........2000-12-27
As someone who got really intrigued by parchment and fancy fonts when I got married, I'm rather surprised that the only version of this book still in print is the "Blue Book of Wedding Stationery." After all, one can have a hoity-toity paper fetish without being engaged.
After a few years of hunting, I found a used of this book in a small used bookstore in downtown Seattle, and I may never give it up. Even though the editor (Feinberg is not credited as the author, and there's an introduction by Stanley Marcus) is bossy, unrelenting on some conventions and is essentially pushing Crane's engraving trade every step of the way, I'm still drawn in by the ellegance of "proper" social stationery. It's easy to take Feinberg's advice with a grain of salt: he seems to resent popular etiquette mavens who state that an extensive "stationery wardrobe" is not necessary, and that the most formal invitations are handwritten.
The introduction of this book gets into the history of paper-making and engraving, and the beginning of each section gets into either the history of the custom being described or stories behind that particular piece of social stationery.
I'm a tad disappointed by the section on calling cards -- a small fluffy book I saw on the subject once got a bit more into detail on what it meant if a particular corner was folded -- but the fact that Feinberg addresses the subject at all wins a point with me.
Other topics covered are the basic "stationery wardrobe" for both men and women, invitations to various occasions, wedding stationery (of course), greeting cards and announcements, "professional stationery," forms of address and a brief history of Crane's. The book includes an occasional example of famous social stationery, such as a 1942 Christmas card from the President and Mrs. Roosevelt.
I've been online for ten years, but I still love sending and receiving paper letters. "Crane's Blue Book of Stationery: The Styles and Etiquette of Letters, Notes and Inivitations," snooty though it is, nurtures that love like few other books have.
Chapter headings include:
1. The Essence of Etiquette
2. Social Stationery
3. Invitations to Social Occasions
4. Wedding Stationery
5. Greeting Cards, Social Announcements, and Social Correspondence
6. Business and Professional Stationery
7. Calling Cards

Book Description
The first book of its kind that addresses the issues of global change from a perspective of Earth as a system, The Earth System offers a solid emphasis on lessons from Earth history that may guide decision-making in the future. This book teaches global change and how it affects our environment. Modern topics covered by this comprehensive book are the atmosphere and global warming, the circulation of the oceans, plate tectonics, ecosystems, the origin of Earth and life, the rise of oxygen and ozone depletion, biodiversity, and climate stability. Because of its incredibly detailed appendices, tables, and suggestions for further reading, this will make an excellent reference work for geologists, oceanographers, meteorologists, and geographers.

A Great Introduction to Earth .......2007-05-23
I read this book outside of a class context. I am not well-versed in chemistry or geology (both are very important in earth science), but I was able to understand a majority of The Earth System. The book is lucidly written and provides a fine analysis of the dynamics of both small and large-scale planetary change.
I bought and read The Earth System with the goal of understanding the science behind global warming: little did I know what a tall order that was! Global climate is enormously complex and contains far more variables than the layman would imagine. Scientists do not and probably will not understand global warming in the same way that they understand less complex phenomena.
The climate system is Chaotic. The best we can do is understand the causal relations that exist within it, plug observed data into computers, and hope that the predictions based on computer modeling will be accurate.
Current modeling technology will predict today's climate by running simulations on what we know of conditions on Earth 150 years ago. The agreement between a variety of simulations that predict future climate based on current conditions is the basis of the scientific consensus that global warming will occur.
Best Earth Systems Science text so far.......2006-09-29
I'm a prof at a small liberal arts college, and I love using this text in my upper level course on global change. It works well with non-science majors, as well as with the more advanced science students. It does a superb job with climate change science, which is one of the major focii in my course. It doesn't hesitate to use real physics, math, and chemistry, yet at the same time is accessible to the non-science folks. Lee Kump is one of the premiere geoscientists in the field, and he has lent his broad understanding to this excellent text. It might also be fun to simply read the book if you are not a student.
Gaia explained by scientists.......2006-09-26
Kump has worked with James Lovelock of 'Gaia' fame on modelling Daisyworld. I'll let the reviewer discover what that means in this title.(But also see REVENGE OF GAIA, 2006, for Lovelock's predictions for our heating planet).
This is the best book for geoscientists and geographers in training who have an interest in climate past, present, and future. An excellent college level scientific supplement to popular works on climate change and earth systems science.
This is the best textbook for earth system science.......2002-12-07
Earth System Science is a new field, one that evolves much more quickly than textbooks can be revised. This one is as current as you can expect, and it approaches the field of science in a much better way than any other textbook I have seen. In particular, most earth system texts approach the field by morphing from a traditional discipline. Usually, it's a geology textbook revised to include atmospheric, oceanic, and climatic studies. But earth system science requires an interdisciplinary approach from the start, a problem based approach. Our global environmental problems need this approach, and this book covers them in a reasonably detailed and accurate manner.
Good overview of how our earth works.......2001-12-30
I used this book for an introductory environmental studies course. The book is full of information I had never before discovered. The chapters clearly describe how smaller cycles and feedback mechanisms relate the health of the earth as a whole.
If you are curious about global warming this book has great factual information to start an understanding of the concept.

Geared towards Engineers.......2007-02-02
The book would be of great value in the design and engineering of cranes and derricks, but is a little cumbersome and is of little use to the men and women in the field who must use this equipment on a day to day basis. I had planned to use it as an educational resource to teach construction site personnel on the general use and safety of cranes, but it was not written for this purpose.
The new, new testament.......2006-07-24
This book is a must have for anyone in the crane industry, I train crane operators and the information is an invaluable resource which covers all aspects of cranage. It is well set out and concise, it covers everthing from basic safety principles through to complex engineering solutions. Save yourself some money in the long run by owning this book & teaching your operators and planners from the lessons learned by these guys. Your equipment will be preserved & costly mishaps will be avoided.
Excellent-.......2002-08-06
Good overall technical writting,
lots of fully worked mathematical
examples. Only book like it available
in print today.
Excellent, authoritative text on the subject.......1998-06-18
Well written, using language easily understood by the average technical reader with an interest in the field ( unlike many engineering tomes in my experience ). Also unlike many texts, proofreading and editing are skilled and thorough. Shapiro ackowledges in the preface to the first edition the roles of his co-author sons as "militant proponents of the clearly expressed thought". The success of that effort is obvious.
A very balanced presentation with generous references to actual experience, practical examples, some theory, and lots of photos and illustrations. The authors' subtle humor makes the normally dry genre very readable.
I was disappointed learning it is currently out of print and am hopeful of a future reprinting so I won't have to keep borrowing my boss' copy !
The best book around for a details on cranes& planning lifts.......1996-07-15
I found this book most informative towards my work on heavy lift planning. It discusses in depth various aspects of lift planning and crane selection. However, a more detailed discussion on planning on congested sites would have been useful

First published in 1895, America's greatest novel of the Civil War was written before 21-year-old Stephen Crane had "smelled even the powder of a sham battle." But this powerful psychological study of a young soldier's struggle with the horrors, both within and without, that war strikes the reader with its undeniable realism and with its masterful descriptions of the moment-by-moment riot of emotions felt by me under fire. Ernest Hemingway called the novel an American classic, and Crane's genius is as much apparent in his sharp, colorful prose as in his ironic portrayal of an episode of war so intense, so immediate, so real that the terror of battle becomes our own ... in a masterpiece so unique that many believe modern American fiction began with Stephen Crane.

The War in the Eyes of the Union.......2007-03-28
The Red Badge of courage is a book that actually tells about how people felt about the Civil war.It tells of their family's discomfort of their decision. It is a book that tells a how a young soldeir fights in the war. Many die around this young boy as he goes through the heart of battle. The book has many exiting twists that mostly are not predictible from the start of the page. Will the young soldier die, or will he live? You will only know if you read the exiting story of Henry Flemming in The Red Badge of Courage.

Got the book quickly - and in good shape - Thank you
The Red Badge of Manhood.......2007-01-08
The Red Badge of Courage is a classic American novel about a boy, who is changed into a man during his experiences in the Civil War. The book does a good job of showing this progression from start to end. In the beginning the protagonist, Henry Fleming, is a scared, young, and inexperienced soldier, who fears that he will run from his first battle. However, at the end of the novel, Henry and his friend Wilson lead the regiment to victory over the rebels.
The thing that Crane does very well in his book is to make a very realistic environment. The story is set in the country, which has many forests, rivers, and fields. The soldiers in the story must overcome these obstacles as they fight the enemy. Also, Crane uses rural dialect to add more depth to conversations that the soldiers have amongst themselves. Flashbacks are used in this novel to recall experiences in Henry's past. For example, Henry has a flashback in the beginning chapter of the novel that tells readers why Henry has enlisted in the army.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good war novel, and is in high school, or older. However, even if you don't like war stories, you might still enjoy this book.
Black and Blue Badge .......2006-12-21
Stephen Crane's Red Badge of Courage is considered an epic American novel. I for one, am not really sure why. It is OK, but compared to the best of Hemingway, Roth, Heller, etc. it is like comparing backyard badmitton with your nephew to the NFL.
What is most interesting is how literature has changed in 100+ years. Crane wrote this thing as a magazine serialization, which does not exist anymore to my knowledge. Red Badge is also full of wind-bag characters who never get to the point, and the ending is rather ambivalent. The protagonist does not really have a name, he is a coward, and there is no love interest except his mother, who only appears on the first 10 pages.
Other than that, this thing is OK. Crane was too young to have been in the Civil War, so to his credit he did impeccable and thorough research with veterans, mostly conducted in saloons. Crane personally was a disaster, his life was not much longer than this novel.
But seriously, read the Red Badge if you did not do so in high school. The descriptions of the battles, especially the confusion, chaos, inability to establish objectives, focus, or leadership, is not what is portrayed in John Wayne movies. The protagonist is very unsure about his future and his role in the war; this is a great theme that Crane did not develop fully in this tiny book. But there is great insight into why the men fought, what motivated them, and how they were inspired to take on impossible, dangerous, and mindless tasks.
