Book Description

Reclaim Your Fire

"Teaching with Fire is a glorious collection of the poetry that has restored the faith of teachers in the highest, most transcendent values of their work with children....Those who want us to believe that teaching is a technocratic and robotic skill devoid of art or joy or beauty need to read this powerful collection. So, for that matter, do we all."
-Jonathan Kozol, author of Amazing Grace and Savage Inequalities

"When reasoned argument fails, poetry helps us make sense of life. A few well-chosen images, the spinning together of words creates a way of seeing where we came from and lights up possibilities for where we might be going....Dip in, read, and ponder; share with others. It's inspiration in the very best sense."
-Deborah Meier, co-principal of The Mission Hill School, Boston and founder of a network of schools in East Harlem, New York

"In the Confucian tradition it is said that the mark of a golden era is that children are the most important members of the society and teaching is the most revered profession. Our jour ney to that ideal may be a long one, but it is books like this that will sustain us - for who are we all at our best save teachers, and who matters more to us than the children?"
-Peter M. Senge, founding chair, SoL (Society for Organizational Learning) and author of The Fifth Discipline

Those of us who care about the young and their education must find ways to remember what teaching and learning are really about. We must find ways to keep our hearts alive as we serve our students. Poetry has the power to keep us vital and focused on what really matters in life and in schooling. Teaching with Fire is a wonderful collection of eighty-eight poems from such well-loved poets as Walt Whitman, Langston Hughes, Billy Collins, Emily Dickinson, and Pablo Neruda. Each of these evocative poems is accompanied by a brief story from a teacher explaining the significance of the poem in his or her life's work. This beautiful book also includes an essay that describes how poetry can be used to grow both personally and professionally.

Teaching With Fire was written in partnership with the Center for Teacher Formation and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation. Royalties from this book will be used to fund scholarship opportunities for teachers to grow and learn.

5 out of 5 stars Not For Teachers Only!.......2007-05-17

I bought this book a while back for my oldest daughter who teaches high school English and Art. It was so awesome that I kept it for myself. (I have a naughty habit of reading all the books I buy as gifts before I give them away....does that make them used books?) My copy is quite dog-eared and worn.

If you love poetry, you NEED this book. The poems are varied and inspiring and enlightening. I discovered many new poets whose books I just had to own after reading their poems here. It's an amazing anthology and would make a great gift to give any friend or loved one who enjoys poetry.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching with fire:Poetry that Sustains the Courage to Teach.......2007-03-10

I bought two copies of this book, one for myself and one for my supervisor. The poems are well chosen and the book is well organized into different categories having to do with vocational discernment. What makes this book unique, however, is the personal testimonies from teachers describing the meaning of each poem in their lives. Since I received this book I have used it extensively, not only for my own enrichment but also for the enrichment of the patients I work with,

At first glance you might think it's just another "teacher book" but it is so fullfilling. As a teacher who loves poetry, literacy, and teaching children to love the written word this book touched me deeply. The poems can be read in the classroom, the narratives are rich and moving and they made me realize I was not alone in feeling I was called to the teaching profession. This book was a Christmas gift to me, one I have deeply cherished. The book gets to the core; it brought tears to my eyes.....tears of joy.

5 out of 5 stars Treasured Collection!.......2006-05-06

I absolutely treasure this book! For several years now, everywhere I give talks or do workshops on service-learning and civic education in higher education, I find an excuse to read a poem or two from this compelling collection of poetry. I think educators are yearning for renewal, and the combination of each poem along with a teacher's note on the meaning of the poem, strikes a chord. I know this, not only from audience reactions to my reading from the book, but also because I always get asked for the citation! I am always happy to recommend the book--(no one in higher ed has said to me they were not interested in the book, when I tell them the poems were selected by K-12 teachers). Suggestion for gift-giving: whenever it fits the occasion, it is a great present. It is also perfect for end-of-year giving for groups (appreciation gift for graduating seniors, recognition of teachers, thank you to participants in service-learning and community involvement programs, etc.).

5 out of 5 stars excellent.......2006-03-08

I love this book. I especially enjoyed the narratives that people wrote about why that was their favorite poem.

2 out of 5 stars Into Confusion and Oblivion.......2007-04-08

I don't know how Lynne Ewing came up with this story. I was looking forward to reading about Serena because she seemed to be one of the more interesting characters and was I sorely disappointed. I don't understand how you can have a romance in a book and not really give the reader anything to go on. If Serena can't remember her memories, then how are we supposed to get a feel for a connection between her and Stanton? They had absolutely no chemistry to me. Stanton and Vanessa seemed to have more chemistry to me (later I found out Lynne Ewing was originally going to hook those two up). Too bad Lynne didn't hook Michael up with someone else later in the series. Personally, I think Vanessa and Stanton would have made a better couple. I understand others might have a different opinion, but that's just how I feel about it.

I give it 2.5 stars for at least being well-written, if not the most interesting or the best of the series. So far, it's my least favorite.

5 out of 5 stars Into the Cold Fire Review By: Diana.......2006-10-18

This book is about a girl who might be endangered by a groupd of people who is after her. These group of people are bad people who try to bring good people to the bad side. This book is a magical book with girls who have powers and they are trying to fight the bad people away. I liked this book because each character has a different personality and different ways to handle things in situations dealt together.

4 out of 5 stars A Review of Into the Cold Fire........2006-10-17

I thought this book was good. It had a lot of action in it. I also liked it because it had magical powers that noone in real life could have. This book is great for teens who like a little bit of romance, drama, and action.

NOTE: PLEASE READ THE FIRST BOOK BEFORE YOU READ THIS BOOK. THE STORY WILL BE RUINED IF YOU DO NOT READ THE OTHER TWO BOOKS FIRST. THIS STORY IS HARD TO FOLLOW IF YOU DO NOT EVERYTHING ABOUT THE SERIES AND ALL THE REALATIONSHIPS. THIS BOOK IS POORLY WRITTEN AND HARD TO FOLLOW IF YOU DON'T READ THE FIRST BOOK.

Serena is a goddess, a daughter of the moon. Sent by Selene to protect the human beings from an ancient evil called the Atrox. Jimena, Serena, Vanessa, and Catty are all daughters of the moon. Each of them has a unique gift. Vanessa can become invisible, Catty can travel in time, Serena reads minds, and Jimena sees into the future. Lynne Ewing has designed all of the books to show us everyone's point of view at different times. This book is based on Serena.

The story beginns with Serena at the beach with her brother Collin. Collin is a surfer. Serena gets a little bored watching him surf so she walks down the beach until she stumbles into a party. A girl dressed in a dress throws herself into a fire. Everyone at the party cheers Lecta. Serena at first thinks the girl's name is Lecta. Serena freaks about because a girl threw herself into the fire but then sees that the fire flames are blue. Stanton suddenly calls out to Serena, then all of the sudden she wakes up. Serena is covered with cuts thinking she fell into the ocean. Her brother come's and finds her and asks her what happened, but she can't remember.

Morgan gets a crush on Collin, Serena's brother. Serena can't stand Morgan and doesn't think that Collin and her would be good together. Then Çollin tells her one day that Morgan thinks Serena needs a boyfriend. Serena is very angry and can't help but wonder if Collin agrees with Morgan. To add to all of the mess, Jimena and Collin start fighting. Serena isn't sure she can handle the preasure. To top it off Serena's crushing on a new kid at school.

Then Jimena tells Serena a vision she had. Serena gets very upset because she doesn't want to destroy the daughters of the moon. But Jimena's vision have always come true. A few days later Stanton come's and tells her that she needs to be careful about the new kid at school. He also tells Serena that he erased her memories on the beach. Serena is very shocked by this. Then Stanton tells her that Stanton and her were in a relationship. A few nights later Serena reads Collins mind about Jimena. Then once the secret of the new kid is revealed the key gets thrown into the cold fire. This book tests the faith between all of the girls, and there values.

This is a story everybody should read including teenagers like us.We could relate some things from ourlife. This book is about a girl finding out what she was ment for.She wouldn't let anything about having a boyfriend keep her down. This story was romantic, action, and true friendship.Serena must know why the Antrox are after her and Jemina has a premonition that Serena is going to betray them. Then Venessa comes again and turns invisible to keep away from from the cold fire.Another thing how could cold fire be cold.Serena was the one who can go through it and save her own friends life.Jemina was thankful that she could try to be more trustworthy and see what the inside from not her premonitions and see for herself.Serena is phychic and she is one of mysteries of the Daughters of the Moon. If you want to hear more about the Daughters of the Moon check out the Volume 3.Jemina couldn't stop thinking of Veto who died last year and he appears in her kitchen. While she was going to ask him what is he doing here he comes up and kisses her in the mouth .Was her feelings still strong? She felt his cheeck and his small scar that was warm. What do you think of that if you want hear more check it out!

Book Description

Jamie Kincaid knows that she can't move on with her life until she has answers. And she's walking straight into the fire to find them.

A year ago Jamie learned that her beloved cousin, Nate, had been killed. Beaten to death in what police suspect was a drug deal gone wrong, he was found by his childhood friend Dillon Gaynor. Dillon had always been the baddest of the bad boys, leading Nate astray, about Nate's death. He's not about to volunteer any information, and Jaime's only choice is to head to the Wisconsin town where he lives to find the answers for herself.

Jamie shows up unannounced on Dillon's doorstep, only to find that Dillon is as dangerous and seductive as she remembers. But despite his silky hostility, she discovers that she can't leave. Things start disappearing, strange accidents begin to happen and Jamie doesn't know whether Dillon is trying to seduce her or scare her away. And if she gives in to his predatory games, will she lose her soul? Or her life?

But something else -- something evil and threatening -- is going on. And Dillon knows more that he's saying. Is he the one behind the strange threats. . . or is he Jamie's only chance for survival?

5 out of 5 stars Great Dark Romance!.......2007-10-05

First off Dillon Gaynor is the bad boy hero in this story and I do mean bad boy. Jamie is the heroine who had a crush on Dillon when they were in high school. Now her cousin or brother I can't remember but he was family anyway is dead and she has come to Dillon for answers. The romance between these two is steamy, especially that car scene whew! Years ago Dillon and Jamie and her cousin/brother? went to a party and he lets her hang with someone who he thinks is way better than him since he is sorta bad and all but he made a terrible mistake but he does get revenge. The villan was really bad and not redeemable bad either he was truly evil. Good story really kept me reading and it was spicy and although Anne Stuart could have made the ending a bit longer it was great!

4 out of 5 stars 4 1/2 Stars!.......2007-08-11

ITF is a prime example of why I love Stuart's writing so much. Why I love her heroes. Morally complicated, wounded, strong men whose love for the heroine is intense and if she pushed it just a tad more you'd be freaked out.

Into the Fire has a nice mystery/suspense element to it. The flashbacks deliver the backstory nicely so you're not frustrated for not knowing, nor are you overwhelmed because you had too much info dumped on you at once. Skillfully done.

The chemistry here is inferno hot. But really, Dillon and his demons are the heart of this book and I think Stuart draws his character with many layers. He's not perfect by any means, but there's something within him that's pushed him to get past who he was even the day before.

I liked Jamie as well, but there are times with Stuart heroines where I just shake my head at them. Still, I think she is a compelling and interesting character and I think Stuart handles the idea of people never being quite who we think they are really well.

5 out of 5 stars Another sexy thriller.......2007-07-10

I have not been dissapointed by Anne Stuart yet. Nice beach read. I loved the chracters and the plot kept you guessing.

4 out of 5 stars Engaging read.......2007-07-08

There's too many things to like about Anne Stuart's INTO THE FIRE. In my continuing quest for a fusion between romance and other genres, my first Anne Stuart novel blurs the lines of distinction between contemporary romance, suspense and mystery, though it's still a romance at heart. I thought INTO THE FIRE does a very decent job in all of these genres and yet still manages to pull off a world unto its own. Aside from the contemporary world, the novel seemed to breath a new world within the garage building in remote Cooperstown, Wisconsin (U.S.), where most of the novel takes place. It was surreal, yet grounded. The settings -- though good -- I thought could have been better if Anne Stuart spent even more time than she already did describing the decrepit garage building. As it is, the inanimate garage building still came alive. The prose isn't bad at all, and the characterizations were excellent with ample backstories and well-realized. Especially Bad-Boy Dillon Gaynor. The romance was very passionate, electrically charged. Anne Stuart even made me laugh as she sprinkles in some witty dialogue.

I've heard you haven't read bad boys until you've read Anne Stuart's bad boys. Within the context of the romance genre, I would have to agree. Although INTO THE FIRE's Dillon is a convicted felon, a high-school dropout, a drunk, a drug dealer, and an all-around insensitive jerk, he still manages to capture our good-girl heroine Jamie Kincaid's attentions, and later, her heart. You have to give it to Anne Stuart to get bad boys right, and still have the reader find them endearing, at least on some level. I've also heard Anne Stuart redeems her heroes fully by the end and such is the case here as well because bad-boy Dillon doesn't have the most noble, gentlemanly intentions towards his heroine Jamie starting out.

Jamie signifies courage during very trying circumstances and a spunky wit on her own right, and in that regard, her character pretty much golfs par for romance. What I found funny though: she drives all the way from her home in Rhode Island to Dillon's car garage in Wisconsin for some answers only to find herself wanting to flee Dillon -- constantly. Classic case of a heroine's nerves and instincts guarding her falling heart, but I thought it was funny here, and unique in the midst of the eerie, suspenseful car garage building. For those of you that are a bit squeamish (I myself can't take S&M), I must warn of a rape scene in the beginning. It's part of Jamie's flashback, and I thought it was important in two respects: it showed Jamie's strength of character and it signified in the overall love story and passion between Jamie and Dillon.

My problems?

Well for one, I thought the book contained too many plot holes. I didn't mind that it often bordered on paranormal elements, but it didn't provide a reasonable explanation for the happenings in Dillon's car garage at the end. Either make it paranormal or provide me with some reasonable explanations please.

And secondly, this is getting back to my need for some satisfactory ending - not necessarily happy 100%, but satisfactory nonetheless. I didn't like how the ending didn't spend enough time between its hero and heroine, Jaime and Dillon. It also felt contrived and rushed.

Finally, I felt Dillon was reformed too easily, and all the criminal charges against him absolved too conveniently. Could be related to my problem with plot holes.

The premise (spoiler-free).

Twenty-eight year-old school teacher Jaime Kincaid has just lost her beloved cousin Nate to death. Tall, dark and handsome, Nate possessed a beguiling smile and a comforting, easy presence. Nate and Dillon Gaynor have been best friends forever and Nate was found bludgeoned to death in his best friend's car garage. Jaime fears thirty year-old Dillon for many reasons: she's had a crush on Dillon since she was 15, Dillon's James-Dean, Rebel-Without-a-Cause persona infringes on her deepest, darkest desires, and he's violent in the worst ways having served jail time for almost beating someone to death when he was 19. Yet, Jaime treks out there in her Volvo for some answers and Nate's belongings since Dillon ignores her letters. The police have dropped Nate's case and Jaime is determined to get some answers.

As she arrives at Dillon's eerie car garage, she's horrified to watch Dillon beating someone up. Nope, Jaime thinks, he hasn't changed at all.

Bad-Boy Dillon Gaynor has his own reasons for intentionally withholding Nate's belongings and hoping to see Jaime again in person after 12 years. They aren't the most noble reasons either, he just wants to use her for his own satisfaction. As soon as Jaime arrives, she wants to escape, to return to Rhode Island while Dillon treacherously sabotages her means to return. He effectively imprisons her in his creepy, dilapidated car garage building.

The story continues its wild ride from there as good-girl Jaime and bad-boy Dillon struggle with ghosts from their past and with each other.

A very engaging reading experience, and it had me completely hooked from beginning to end.

5 out of 5 stars WOW.......2007-06-15

i rarely do reviews but i just had to write something about this one. i agree with the majority of readers here that it's a 5-star book. Anne Stuart is a master at bad boy characters & all i can say is keep bringing them on Anne - the badder the better! The only thing stopping me from giving this book a 5-star PLUS is the short, abrupt but VERY satisfying ending. I wish she'd give the book an epilogue or another chapter but it was only a 1 pager. You'll find this type of ending is very typical of Anne Stuart books and even though i regret the "abruptness" it does leave you craving for more of her books to read. After 5 books from Anne i have to say she's my top "bad boy" romance author. I'd read any of her books & would always buy her new releases.

5 out of 5 stars The absolute, hands down, BEST pottery book on earth........2004-03-01

This is probably... no. ABSOLUTELY the best and most wonderfull book I have ever run across. Obstler does an amazing job of showing (and explaining) the true process of ceramics. This is not a technique or coffee table book although it is easily better at both categories than most books of that sort. This IS a book more about the materials of ceramics than the finished product. Mimi lovingly portrays the full cycle of the process which produces a pot. Something all true potters should know is that the actual end result, the pot, is the smallest and most insignificant part of ceramics. In this book, the reader is introduced to the whole life of the materials which we use. In a mish mash of history, formula, chemistry and geology, Mimi Obstler creates a unique and awe-inspiring story not just of the pot or potter, but of the earth from which both are born.
This book is beautifully crafted, and you can tell, that a lot of love, work and knowledge have gone into it's creation. This is a must have for anyone who truly loves pottery OR geology. I have never seen a book this amazing before. I highly recomend it. This book is worth every cent and so much more. I can honestly say that I am stunned. Thank you Mimi Obstler, this is a treasure.

5 out of 5 stars A necessary book for any serious potter........2000-04-21

"Out of the Earth Into the Fire" is a necessary book for any potter , and is especially useful for any potter doing their own glazes. It details in it's four chapters, although very long and comprehensive chapters, all of the glaze and clay making ingredients that you will need. The first chapter deals with the glaze cores. It talks of both the historical and the emperical aspects of all the necessary substances in use. A substance that I can't wait to get my hands on is Rotton Stone. I'll let you read the book to find out why. The second chapter is about clays and clay bodies.Although most of us buy prepared clay this gives us reason to make our own. The next chapter concerns auxillary melters. We find here about glaze surfaces; how to best utilize a substance to make a glossy, a matt, or an opaque surface. Finally the last chapter reveals all we want to know about silica and alumina. The appendices are full of useful material. There are even some good pictures in this book. An unexpected surprise.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book ... cross curricular!.......2006-08-14

This book is great to use in a center when teaching a unit on landforms and is also great for those kids who are aching to know more about the science rhelm of volcanoes. It's age appropriate and children at the Step 4 reading level will be challenged enough with it. :)

5 out of 5 stars volcanoes mountains of fire.......2003-10-02

I think that this is a good book and I know that this is a good book. The part I like about it is when the volcano erupts. The part I don't like about it is when people died.I
would recommend this to a 4th grade reader and I would have preferred for it to have more pages. I give it a 5 stars because it has nice pictures and I learned new information about volcanoes.

A powerful call to intimate and passionate communion with God in a culture of lukewarm faith and apathetic spirituality.

    5 out of 5 stars I'm on Fire!!!.......2007-09-23

This book spoke to me like no Christian book ever has. In fact, I felt like much of it was about me. Transformed Into Fire made me see myself as God sees me, rather than the broken self who is always trying to act mature and nice so that I can receive God's blessing. I went through a two-year struggle with self-hatred. This book made sense of that experience and gave me the tools to see God's blessing in my life. I thank God for this book and the impact it has had on my life.

    5 out of 5 stars Life-changing!.......2007-01-17

This is one of the most valuable books in my library. I've given copies to many people, and all of them have reported that it has changed their lives.

4 out of 5 stars Move Over Merton.......2005-10-25

Let's say you're a Christian who seeks a closer relationship with God and want to explore contemplation. And let's say you want a nuts n' bolts guide book. You find Thomas Merton's obessesion with the pacifist left wing of Roman Catholisim irritating. And Wild Communion is both paganistic and hints at perversion. And Tom Brown Jr. trys too hard to be New Age and wannabe Native American. This is the book for you. Judy lays it on the line and gives you the "how-to's" as well as whetting your appetite for a more intimate relationship with your Creator. You'll find info here you'd have to glean from volumes of Merton's writing and you won't have the sneaking suspicion you're turning from God toward the Earth Goddess or polytheism. I highly recommend it.

5 out of 5 stars Being transformed into fire is dangerous.......2004-09-24

You do not want to read this book if you don't want to change. It challenges the masks we wear, the roles we play, and the values of our culture, both Christian and secular. The author's assault on so many fronts is based on her conviction that unless we re-examine ourselves and our culture - including our church culture - at the most fundamental levels, we will continue to live anemic spiritual lives largely separated from God's love. That separation, according to the author, is as a result of our choices, not His. If, on the other hand, you have been left frustrated, puzzled, cynical, or guilty as to why the life of a Christian as portrayed in the New Testament is not a reality for you, if you long for a more vibrant and intimate relationship with God, then by all means read this book. It will provide direction for your deepest longings.

5 out of 5 stars This is the book you've been looking for..........2004-02-27

If you are looking for something more in your relationship with the Lord, this book has it. (You must be, or you wouldn't be shopping for Christian books.) It's so wonderful to find a little gem like this which is easy to read but still challenging. Unlike many other contemporary Christian books, which all seem to be saying about the same thing, this one is full of concepts which are new and includes applications. It really held my attention, and even more unusual, I am actually reading it again. If you want your relationship with God to be only about what other people think of the things you say, or things you do, what you look like, or where you go to church, you don't need to read this book. It is for people who want to experience what they say they believe, and who want to know God in a more personal and intimate way. Be forewarned: after you read Transformed into Fire you will never be the same.

    3 out of 5 stars Typical Laymon.......2007-08-13

This is a typical Laymon outing, however, not as good as others he has written. As with all of Laymon's books, there is a plot and characters that could never be real in a million years (and I'm not just talking about supernatural stuff) which this book has none. There is of course a lot of gore and a lot of sex. This review may sound like I am saying Laymon books are trash - they pretty much are - yet I can't stop reading them. They are way out there and just a lot of fun to read - so whenever I come across a laymon book at a used book store (I don't buy new books very often) I have to get them and read them immediately. I enjoy Laymon, but this one is not as good as others.

3 out of 5 stars Big Smoke, No Fire.......2007-06-07

Book after book, Richard Laymon's work rarely disappoints, even if each plot features a sadistic killer, a group of cannibals, and sex--LOTS of sex. However, Into the Fire falls short and rings absurd. The main characters adjust way too quickly to outrageous events, and the interior monologues, which Laymon usually utilizes to great effect, sound stilted and very unlike real thoughts. Also, Laymon introduces a minor female character that he quickly abandons; her presence in no way advances the plot.

While the bus full of mannequins is a charming oddity and a creepy scene, and while the Mojave setting provides a stunning backdrop, Into the Fire smolders compared to Laymon's other efforts, producing big smoke but no fire.

    1 out of 5 stars I give up.......2007-02-13

I have read or tried to read a number of Laymon books. For some reason I always feel the need to shower afterwards. However, I have enjoyed a couple - Blood Games was entertaining and I loved One Rainy Night.
This one I did not enjoy. I tried twice to read it and gave up both times. If you've never read a book by Laymon - this is not the one to start with.

1 out of 5 stars Into The Fire.......2007-01-16

Chapter by chapter I could not understand why I continued to read this book. This is one of the worst story lines I have read. The only thing missing from the cast was a homosexual mime.

You ask why did I give it a one star rating?
    1. It's the lowest rating available.
    2. The book is spelled correctly.
    3. The pages are in correct numerical order.

That's as good as it gets.

    Save your money.

4 out of 5 stars Another terrific book by Laymon!.......2006-12-18

Although the blurb on the back of the book is a bit misleading, it isn't as bad as some I have had the misfortune of seeing lately (see "Nine Lives" by Sharon Sala for a particularly egregious sample of this).

Pamela is abducted by Rodney, a man who has been obsessed with her since high school. Her husband is murdered as well. Rodney drives her into the desert, where he plans to keep her for the rest of her life. However, she orchestrates an escape attempt - just when it seems that her life is over, she is rescued by a man named Sharpe, who drives a bus populated by mannequins. He takes her to Pits, CA (pop. 6 - they keep making a big deal out of this), where she is taken in by the caring population; only something seems off . . .

In an alternate story (that eventually dovetails into Pamela's story), Norman is on his way home from college when he neglects to lock his vehicle's doors at a gas station in a small town in Oregon after fueling up (for the record, last time I was in Oregon and as far as I know, you can NOT fuel up your own vehicle in Oregon - ALL the stations are full serve - so this is a very improbable scenario) and bad-boy Duke helps himself to a ride. Along the way they pick up the skanky Boots. These two lead Norman BADLY astray, to say the least. Eventually they find themselves on the run, stranded in the desert, and rescued in turn by Sharpe.

The ending is a pulse-pounder, to say the least and I found the epilogue to be as amusing as any bit of "Hannibal" (and certainly better written). I always put off reading the Laymon books, and always kick myself for taking so long to get to them . . . Do yourself a favor - if you like horror, you'll LOVE Laymon. Get a few of the books by this prolific and terrific writer!

      Book Description

What could be more different than the icy arctic landscape and the hot blast of a glass furnace? James Houston, explorer, artist, and writer, draws the inspiring connection in this fascinating introduction to one of the world’s most ancient – and most beautiful – arts.

During the years that James Houston lived in the Arctic, he was above all impressed by the resourceful people. But he also fell in love with the rugged treeless land, the winter moonlight shining off the snow and ice, the majestic ever-changing shapes and great sighing of new-formed ice.

When asked to design glass sculptures for Steuben, he, with some misgivings, left his isolated arctic home to move to the heat of a crowded New York summer. As he learned the art of glass sculpture, he found an affinity with life in the Far North. After all, glass is a liquid that hardens, much like ice. The jagged shapes reflect the arctic landscape. Glass making depends on small teams of cooperative craftspeople, much like the Inuit families as they hunt and create their art together.

This very personal story is a stunning introduction to glass making, and to an extraordinary individual.

        Book Description

As the descendants of Mexican immigrants have settled throughout the United States, a great literature has emerged, but its correspondances with the literature of Mexico have gone largely unobserved. In Bordering Fires, the first anthology to combine writing from both sides of the Mexican-U.S. border, Cristina Garc’a presents a richly diverse cross-cultural conversation. Beginning with Mexican masters such as Alfonso Reyes and Juan Rulfo, Garc’a highlights historic voices such as “the godfather of Chicano literature” Rudolfo Anaya, and Gloria Anzaldœa, who made a powerful case for language that reflects bicultural experience. From the fierce evocations of Chicano reality in Jimmy Santiago Baca’s Poem IX to the breathtaking images of identity in Coral Bracho’s poem “Fish of Fleeting Skin,” from the work of Carlos Fuentes to Sandra Cisneros, Ana Castillo to Octavio Paz, this landmark collection of fiction, essays, and poetry offers an exhilarating new vantage point on our continent–and on the best of contemporary literature.
