The best stone masonry book in my collection.......2004-04-19
Probably the best book I own on stone masonry. I bought a lot of stone-masonry/stone-scaping books over the past 5 years and most of them do not come anywhere close. These books have a good chapter or two, or maybe some good photography, but most of them fail in one respect or another. Reed's book is very good throughout and is very suitable for both beginners and pros. An excellent section on tools and basic techniques. Detailed chapters on free-standing walls, retaining walls, single/two-faced walls, dry-stack/mortared, hidden-joint/visible-joint, dry/wet paving. The author could probably improve the book (for the beginners) by adding a chapter on stone types with good pictures illustrating the various types of stone as well as examples of walls with different stone/technique combinations.
Anyway, I own most of the other books listed on the "Customers who bought this book also bought..." page and this is the one to get. Overall, if you plan on getting involved with stone you should own this book.
Perfect!.......2003-01-02
As a landscaper and stoneworker I have found this book inspirational and informative. Full of new ideas and the full color photos present works of art that can be followed just by viewing their example.

Book Description
Compelling evidence links the chemicals in household products to cancer, asthma, allergies, multiple chemical sensitivity syndrome -- also known as environmental illness -- hormonal disruption, reproductive and developmental disorders, and other conditions. Yet cleaning products are exempt from the full ingredient disclosure on product labels as required for food and personal care products and enter the marketplace with little or no testing for potential health risks.
Naturally Clean explains the dangers of traditional cleaners and provides illuminating statistics that illustrate how the chemicals found in almost every home are known or likely to cause a host of serious health problems. The book's easy-to-understand introduction discusses basic household chemistry, concepts of toxicity and types of toxic exposure, and the difference between natural, organic, and synthetic chemicals.
A Room by Room Guide provides tips for:
- a healthier kitchen
- keeping your bedrooms safe
- mold, mildew and soap scum: spotless bathrooms, and
- special precautions for cleaning children's rooms.
Naturally Clean also features a comprehensive Product Selection Guide that analyses over 300 natural and traditional cleaners: everything from laundry products through oven cleaners, disinfectants, spot removers, carpet cleaners and bathroom cleaners. This handy, easy-to-use reference rates the household cleaning products found on the shelves of natural food and grocery stores providing Seventh Generation's pick of your healthiest and safest options. A resource guide tells readers where to find additional information, and an at-a-glance glossary helps understand key terms.
Royalties from the sale of Naturally Clean will benefit the Children's Health Environmental Coalition (www.checnet.org) in their efforts to educate parents about environmental toxins that can affect children's health.

A must have........2007-08-23
Wow! Everyone living in modern society should be issued a copy of this book. It's amazing the things in our homes touted as "safe" that are slowly killing us, and causing numerous health problems.
Good Info But Product Performance Evaluation Lacking.......2007-08-18
On the plus side, this book provides a great recap regarding the environmental impacts of everyday household products, although the book sometimes reads like a chemistry textbook. The authors cite numerous research examples that demonstrate links between common products we use and their environmental and health effects. They also offer many common sense changes for improving our home's environment.
My disappointment lies with the author's evaluations of readily-available cleaning products (which incidentally comes in the final chapter of the book). My past experiences with green cleaning products have been underwhelming at best -- performance is clearly lacking. The authors choose to evaluate over 300 products based only on the environmental impacts and specifically state that they did not evaluate cleaning performance -- a serious omission in their research. It feels like a job only half done.
Naturally Clean.......2007-01-12
This is a great book. More should read and learn what we are doing to our bodies without even knowing. Very fast shipment.
Informative book.......2006-05-04
The actual content of the book should be required reading for everyone. People might drive a Prius or a hybrid car but their big tub o' liquid laundry detergent is made from Petroleum. It's information like this that makes it a very interesting read.
I do not consider myself a stereotypical super-eco-freak, the kind that wears long flowing caftans and wears Birkenstocks and could generally be considered a modern-day hippie. Because let's face it; environmentalists do have that as a stereotype regardless of if it's true or not. I do consider myself a pretty normal person who likes to learn as much as possible about anything that involves my kids. Most people don't think that cleaning products or lawn fertilizers or driving the minivan that gets 17 miles to the gallon make a big impact on the world. But that is the danger; too many people think that what they do does not matter. This book reminds us that we live on the planet with others and should always remember that.
The only problem with this book is that for the first several chapters, I felt like I was trudging through a textbook. Very informative but very dry. But as the book went along, it seemed to pick up it's pace and the writing improved, becoming more conversational and easier to read.
This helped educate me a little more about living in a greener world, although much of the stuff I had read in several different places. It is nice to get all the important information in one place, though.
What an amazing book!.......2006-04-06
Naturally Clean is stock full of useful information about chemicals to avoid in the home. It is truly a must-have for every household, written by the crew at Seventh Generation, people who know their stuff. I now take it along with me when I go shopping and review labels for ingredients with a new-found appreciation for the hazards that are out there on supermarket shelves. I especially appreciate the Resource Guide at the end.
I own a green bed & breakfast and plan to make Naturally Clean part of our new Honeymoon Special. It is the type of book I wish I had owned thirty-five years ago when my children were small. Clean up your act. Get yourself a copy today!
Book Description
For every prospective homebuyer there is a unique financial situation. Some may have past or current credit issues, others lack cash-on-hand for a down payment, and many have unpredictable incomes. But this doesn't mean these folks are any less entitled to own a home.
Who Says You Can't Buy a Home! gives readers plenty of proven, powerful ways to overcome perceived obstacles to home ownership. Real estate and home-buying authority David Reed tells hopeful buyers everything they need to know about establishing credit, using government mortgage and zero money down programs, buying foreclosures, getting subprime loans, buying without a mortgage, and much more.
And for those with shaky credit, Who Says You Can't Buy a Home! offers priceless advice on managing credit scores and reports, repairing bad credit, and other crucial steps that can make the difference between owning a home and being turned down. The book also shows how to avoid predatory lenders and common mistakes, while giving readers the confidence and know-how to get the home they've always wanted.

Opens up your options!.......2007-05-22
I meet lots of first time home buyers who have bad or no credit. Often times they are frustrated and start to assume that most lender and brokers don't want to deal with them. What this book does is open up those options.
I let one of my clients borrow this book. He came back to me and felt more confident with his decision to pursue to signing the papers.
Great information, easily explained, lots of ideas.......2006-05-29
Although this book has chapters devoted to people with no credit or bad credit, this new book tells how people can get a home loan - at competitive rates - that might not have any money for down payment or closing costs, regardless of credit history.
I'm in the real estate business and thought I had heard it all but this book points out strategies that I didn't know existed. Perhaps the best sections are those which address people with damaged credit and how to not just shop around for the best loan but maybe more importantly how to protect themselves from "bad" loan officers who are only in the business to take advantage of someone and charge super high rates and fees.
I bought several copies of this book to give to clients who think they can't buy a home. Then wait for their phone call!
Product Description
This superb fingerpicking reference book features 101 authentic, traditional blues fingerstyle licks for guitar. The goldmine of licks is divided into the following categories: Four-beat licks; Eight-beat licks; Introductions and turnarounds. The licks are written in both standard notation and guitar tablature, and recorded at a moderate speed on the companion CD. This is not a method book for beginners, but a nice collection of licks for guitarists who have some fingerstyle ability and want to do some exploring. Another GREAT guitar book from Red Dog Music Books.

One wonders what will happen if and when Margaret Truman runs out of "appropriate" Washington, D.C., landmarks in and around which to stage her murders. Murder at the Watergate fits nicely into the mold with which Truman's fans have long been familiar: that elegant couple, Mac Smith and Annabel Reed, newly ensconced in their Watergate apartment, become enmeshed in a political imbroglio that leads--as it must--to murder. Their good friend, the vice president, finds that U.S. policy on Mexico can be one hot potato. Or tamale. The dueling factions of the Mexican-American Trade Alliance and the Mexico initiative--the former an "unoffical" but deeply menacing lobbying presence with a stake in maintaining the status quo, the latter a think tank bent on exposing corruption deep within Mexico's ruling party--weave a ragged tapestry of blackmail, bribery, assault, and murder that threatens to envelop both Mac and Annabel--and the administration itself. Truman hopscotches rather frantically around the globe and throws in a few over-the-top minor characters to keep the loyal reader hot on her trail. A less devoted reader may be tempted to abandon the chase somewhere in London.
One doesn't read Truman for her dialogue, her characters, or her gripping cliffhangers. But her cogent meditations and snide asides on politicking and politicos are absolutely on target and a pleasure to read. --Kelly Flynn
Book Description
The Watergate in Washington, D.C., is one of the world's most famous addresses-- although not everyone knows exactly what it is. This imposing, fabulous complex is made up of a hotel, residences, restaurants, offices, shops, and more. It is a haven for the famous after they break out and, on occasion, for the infamous when they break in. Its very name has become part of our history.
Margaret Truman, herself the bearer of one of the world's most famous names, knows Washington's ins and outs, including who is "in" and who is "out." In this absorbing, timely Capital Crimes mystery, she shows us around this fascinating city that is America's center of power and--some would say--corruption. Some of those who are "out" here are very dead indeed.
The glittering cast of characters includes Vice President Joe Aprile, who plans to become president, if he can avoid a tempting vice; a glamorous Washington hostess and fund-raiser, Elfie Dorrance, with a propensity for marrying rich and powerful men and then grieving prettily at the end--their end; and Chris Hedras, a special assistant to the vice president, with some very special ambitions. And, of course, Annabel Smith, gallery owner, and Mac Smith, law school professor. The story deals in part with the influence on political campaigns of "soft money" and its hard consequences, as well as this country's tortuous and often ambiguous relationship with Mexico, in particular the glorious San Miguel de Allende, home of the well-to-do, and a few ill-to-do, a place involving drugs, politics, and police and politicians looking the other way.
Once again Margaret Truman offers a delight to the reader who likes a fast-turning page, the pleasure of inside information, the allure of high life crossing paths with lowlife, and the return of the attractive crime-solving couple Mac and Annabel
From the Hardcover edition.

An interesting read.......2003-09-23
I love mysteries. I love suspense as well. And this book didn't fail in that respect. However, I am spoiled, I like really good writing when I am reading a mystery ~~ this book doesn't qualify.
Mac Smith is appointed by the Vice-President Angrile to go to Mexico to oversee the elections there. There have been a series of murders lately ~~ and it all points to the ruling class in Mexico ~~ as they fought to keep the political powers in their grasp. Stories and rumors fly about in Washington and Mac Smith is right in the middle of it. His wife joins him on the trip to Mexico and they're in the midst of all the excitement.
It is a fast read ~~ an interesting one. But if you're looking for a book with some substance to it ~~ this book would not be it. It is just a fast mystery read that you don't have to think about the characters much. It's a perfect read for a lying-in on a blanket while enjoying the fall colors.

A good yawn?.......2001-07-22
No fan of her writings, I still buy them all, when they become available in paperbacks, because I like the "inside" insights she always has to offer on Washington. But after 13 (or is it 14?) I have to repeat what I said about the third one: Poor Meg, she never could sing and she still can't write! In Watergate she almost outdoes herself for bad grammar, awkward syntax and malapropisms; this one afforded opportunities for bad Spanish as well, of which she took plenty of advantage. Otherwise we have the usual plodding method: No one can come onstage without a complete inventory of how he is dressed, whether or not it adds to his character portrayal. No one can eat a meal without a litany of courses obvioualy drawn from the restaurant menu. Every movement through any city has to be traced out on a city map. I'm sure by now she has a healthy library of menus, maps and fashion magazines, where what she really needs is a good editor. But there is something new in Watergate, or anyway something I've not noticed in previous Murders here and there -- political polemics, and the lady plainly does not understand the politics or economics of free trade, and her bungling treatment of NAFTA detracts from an already-less-than-mediocre story.
the best murder mystery by Truman by far.......2000-01-17
Truman has outdoone herself with this one! its the best mystery ever by the queen of political mystery. Who did it? ask Margaret and she will tell you who!
LOVE The Capital Crime Series!.......1999-10-13
But this one wasn't as great as most of the others. I enjoyed the action and even found the opinionated descriptions of corruption in Mexico somewhat interesting and thought-provoking. But wish that this book didn't feel so rushed and that it had more heart. I was getting a "Lawrence Sanders" kind of feeling (whose books I also enjoy, but in a different way).
Makes U.S. Mexican Policy first priority.......1999-08-15
All of M. Truman's books are entertaining. However this one doesn't live up to expectations. The main theme seems to editorialize about her opinions concerning U.S. policies re' Mexico. The mystery plot is late arriving and almost incidental.Hope the next one returns to her former standard.

This book is a real page-turner, especially if you enjoy historical fiction and time-travel stories. However, the writing wasn't especially great, and I found factual and typographical errors in the text. Susan Glaspell: Her Life and Times
ASIN: 0807848689
Release Date: 2000-09-27 |
Book Description
During her lifetime, playwright and novelist Susan Glaspell (1876-1948) was regarded as highly as Eugene O'Neill and Edith Wharton. Winner of the 1931 Pulitzer Prize for drama (for Alison's House), she was cofounder of the Provincetown Players, the little theater that "discovered" O'Neill. Later, Glaspell was instrumental in introducing American drama to English audiences when her play The Verge was produced in London. Yet despite her many accomplishments, Glaspell is often overlooked in the standard histories of American theater. Now, Barbara Ozieblo returns this intriguing and important figure to the spotlight.
Ozieblo combines an engaging narrative of Glaspell's life with insightful analysis of her creative works. Rebelling early against the expectations imposed on women of her era, Glaspell grappled with the conflict between Victorian mores and feminist aspirations throughout her life. In Trifles, now recognized as a groundbreaking feminist drama, she explored the reasons for a woman's extreme response to her husband's demanding, authoritarian stance. Ozieblo also investigates Glaspell's relationship with dramatist George Cram Cook, exploring the scandal that surrounded their courtship and marriage as well as the life they led among the bohemians of Greenwich Village.
Customer Reviews:
A Necessary Voice in American Theatre.......2001-04-10
This book is especially recommended for theatre lovers and constitutes an essential contribution to the history of women in the US during the twentieth-century. Following Virginia Woolf, Barbara Ozieblo has as her goal to "capture" Glaspell's personality, but the results go far beyond this original purpose. Seduced by a brilliantly polished, engaging narrative, the reader is presented with a new perspective on the development of American theatre in the first half of the twentieth century by means of a smooth movement between identification with Glaspell and a fine and suggestive analysis of her writings.
For the theatre critic / lover, the most relevant dimension of Susan Glaspell's life is her involvement in the creation of the Provincetown Players, either as promoter, actress or playwright. In this regard, a new focus on her standpoint is worth considering, being both protagonist and witness in the development of George Cram Cook's visionary efforts. No doubt, her point of view enables a more accurate, fresher account of the true nature and evolution of Cook's relationship with Eugene O'Neill.
The reader becomes Glaspell herself while witnessing this crucial part in twentieth-century American drama. The implication is that, from her position between external spectator and measured participant, we can reach a more suitable evaluation of the Provincetown Players' contribution to US theatre. This fact is accounted for by the author's decisiveness at drawing consistent conclusions at the right time within the narrative.
An outstanding student and vocational writer, Glaspell also offers an invaluable personal story of abnegation and endurance. The chapter devoted to Cook's final days in Greece does justice to her position as committed wife and sacrificed woman. Here we have an example of a woman's ambivalent role regarding the rules imposed by the society of the time. The main question is whether Glaspell would have utilized her talents in a better way without the burdens imposed by marriage. However, the narrative efficiently locates us within Glaspell's persona, and her constant sufferings caused by her true love for Cook, indeed a demanding and dependent dreamer.
Finally, Glaspell's life as a widow back in the US becomes an example of the unrewarding, sometimes miserable life of twentieth-century women involved in the artistic sphere. Recognized writer, Pulitzer-prize winner and generous mentor, Glaspell keeps on being "too" generous, especially in her relationships with men, and for most of her life remains a solitary individual whose loneliness is only alleviated by the company of her friends and animals and, ultimately, her love for the theatre.
It is precisely this love for the theatre that this excellent biography transfers to the reader, no matter what background, interests or motivations he or she have. Bored with annoying biographies trying to make up silly stories about the hollow lives of any writer or celebrity, this book becomes a fresh, invigorating breeze for both the critic and the general reader.

Saudi Royal Family Book.......2002-09-14
The Saudi Royal Family was well presented for younger children. Reed wrote this in a way that enables young kids to understand not only the Saudi Royal Family but the religion of Islam. She remains objective throughout but as an American questions whether or not the Sauds are our friends. She raises this question in a way that would allow kids to think it through and come to their own conlcusion. The photos are wonderful and I liked the color, layout and presentation of the book.
