5 out of 5 stars another amazing book.......2007-08-19

After I read revenge of the shadow king I just had to read this one! The book is a grabbing story for all ages! It had a fantastic blend between historical myth (yes historical myth) but with it's own twist. These two men are artists!

It all starts out with the Grey Griffins on yet another adventure, only this time it's in Scotland! The Grey Griffins are invited to spend the winter holidays in Scotland with Max's father. Before they are set to leave, max has to deal with his mother and a couple of brownies and a Pucca that attack max as he sleeps. When they finally arrive to Scotland after a bumpy plane ride, it is ever kids dream, massive collections of rare comic books for Ernie, a personal garage for harley, a unicorn room for Natalia and a vacation with max's dad.

Every thing is going great they are exploring the castle and uncovering small mysteries, but soon max's father is called away on business only to be kidnapped by a group of werewolves called the black wolf society. The ransom? The spear of Ragnorak (sp?) what will max do? nobody has seen the spear in centuries! and what is this of a strange prophecy?

This is a great story that includes werewolves, vampires, magic, templar knights, and lots of faeries. It is a fantastic tale interwoven with fantasy, magic, and history all put in one! I recommend this to everybody who reads this review! and i can not wait until the last book, supposedly coming out this winter!

When Max's father is missing and some werewolves attack, Max and his friends find themselves on a magical adventure mission. No prior familiarity with the Grey Griffins series is required to appreciate this new adventure.

5 out of 5 stars The Rise of the Black Wolf.......2007-06-06

In The Rise of the Black Wolf, Max and his three friends, the Grey Griffins as they call themselves in their card game, are going to Max's dad's castle in Scotland for Christmas. This book is the sequel to their first book, when they find out the creatures in their card game, The Round Table, came to life. Anyway, on their way to Max's dad's castle, their plane is attacked by goblins, but they safely make it to the castle. While there, Max's dad is kidnapped. Now it's up to the Grey Griffins to get Max's dad back.

This is a great action book with awesome fighting scenes, spookiness, and mystery. This book is also on the line of a fairytale story. From the first page to the last page, your eyes will be glued to the book until you're finished with the entire book. Some violence and scary scenes may scare younger readers. I believe this book is for kids at least 11 or older. I liked this book for its action scenes. This book has the most shocking ending of all time. The only way to find out how it ends is to read this fabulous book.

5 out of 5 stars Non-stop adventure and excitement bombard the likable heroes throughout the pages.......2007-06-05

Eleven-year-old Grayson Maximillian Sumner III, or Max, used to believe he led a boring life in an ordinary town. But ever since he discovered an ancient book called THE CODEX in his grandmother's attic, life has spun into an unbelievable adventure. He has learned that he is related to King Arthur and part of an elite group called The Templar Knights, whose members are devoted to protecting the world against evil. Max's new job is Guardian of the Codex, and it's no small task. However, he does have three best friends to help, and together the Grey Griffins, as they call themselves, bravely face all sorts of scary creatures like goblins, bone crunchers and fireball pixies.

As Christmas approaches, the Grey Griffins receive an invitation to visit Scotland where Max's rich dad lives. They expect awesome gifts and a peaceful vacation from school, but they're only half right. The Scottish castle is stocked full of amazing comic books, a unicorn Ferris wheel, go-carts and a racing track, a pool-sized aquarium and unending amounts of yummy things to eat. However, the trip is in no way relaxing. Before they even get to Scotland, their plane is attacked by Kobolds, soldiers of the Black Witch. Thanks to Logan, Max's bodyguard and member of the Templar Knights, they manage to escape and make it safely to the castle.

Of course the Grey Griffins have to explore the castle, and the very first night they sneak off into the darkness. They discover a hidden room filled with unexplainable artifacts, including a painting of King Arthur's son holding the Spear of Ragnarok, made at the same time and out of the same material as the famous sword Excalibur. They also find a secret map of the castle property, with one spot marked as The Witching Well. The Grey Griffins aren't aware of the important roles that these items will play in their near future.

All too soon, another attack descends, this time by the Black Wolf Society, an army of indestructible werewolves. Once again, they barely escape with their lives, taking refuge in the Templar Library where they finally learn what they're up against. The Black Witch and the Black Wolf Society have kidnapped Max's father. In return for his life, they want the Spear of Ragnarok with which they can rule the world. According to a prophesy, only a boy guarding the Codex will be able to find the three parts of the spear and reassemble them --- and Max is that person. He and the Grey Griffins set out to save his dad, but they have no idea of the obstacles they will have to face nor do they know about the evil spies hidden amongst them.

Fans who have eagerly awaited this sequel to THE REVENGE OF THE SHADOW KING will not be disappointed. Non-stop adventure and excitement bombard the likable heroes throughout the pages. Vivid descriptions will put readers right next to Max and his friends as they fight for peace and freedom. And it's not over yet, as a third book is lined up for the Grey Griffins. Authors Derek Benze and J. S. Lewis have delivered another winner!

4 out of 5 stars Well.......2007-08-18

Of all of her novels, I think this is my least favorite. Not that it wasn't good, because it was. But I think I'd gotten spoiled with the romantic suspense ones and this one kinda surprised me.

Marcus Wolf however, is right up there with Garrison. The story was cute and sensual and had almost everything I was looking for. I think I'm going to go back and read it, maybe change my mind a little.

4 out of 5 stars The Wolf Was Definitely Tamed.......2007-05-07

I enjoy Maureen Smiths writing style, but this wasn't my favorite novel, it was still a great read! Talk about Hot & Steamy! The chemistry between these characters carried the right amount of tension, attraction and raw animalistic lust. Mrs. Smith establishes a great passion in this story. I enjoyed the role of the supporting characters and the drama and/or conflicts they brought to the story. Mrs. Smith has a gift for making you wish it were you were the main character without crudeness. I believe the hopeless romantic readers will enjoy this novel, as well as those who can appreciate a some of spice in their lives. Keep 'em coming, Mrs. Smith.

Maureen Smith is officially my best story writer. I love her books. They are filled with detailed scenes, romance, and love scenes. She describes the perfect gentleman with a wild side that every woman goes crazy over. I will definitely buy all of her books. She is great at building up the tension between the characters without making you bored. A definite must read!!! The plot thickened with every chapter. My mouth was gaped wide open the whole time I read the book. If it wasnt the plot shocking me it was the steamy love scenes. I have to say this was her best book EVER!!!

Book Description

Archaeologist Faye Longchamp and her friend, Joe Wolf Mantooth, have traveled to Neshoba County, Mississippi, to help excavate a site near Nanih Waiya, the sacred mound where tradition says the Choctaw nation was born. When farmer Carroll Calhoun refuses their request to investigate an ancient Native American mound, Faye and her colleagues are disappointed, but his next action breaks their hearts: he tries to bulldoze the huge relic to the ground.

Faye and Joe rush to protect history--with their bodies, if necessary. Soon the Choctaws arrive to defend the mound and the farmer's white and black neighbors come to defend his property rights. Though a popular young sheriff is able to defuse the situation, tempers are short.

That night, Calhoun is found dead, his throat sliced with a handmade stone blade. Was he killed by an archaeologist, angered by his wanton destruction of history? Neshoba County farmers have been plowing up stone tools like the murder weapon for centuries. Did one of them take this chance to even the score with an old rival?

The sheriff is well-aware that Faye and Joe were near the spot where Calhoun's body was found and their combined knowledge of stone tools is impressive. They had motive, means, and opportunity....but so does almost everyone in Neshoba County.

3 out of 5 stars Entertaining but unrealistic.......2007-04-28

Faye Longchamp is on another archeological dig with her faithful friend Joe Wolf Mantooth in tow. I don't know why Joe tags along after her, especially when Faye starts dating a slick political lobbyist. I guess following Faye is Joe's unfortunate lot in life.

The archeology team hasn't been on site for a day before they instigate a confrontation that alienates both the local farmers and the indigenous Choctaw. Later that confrontation results in murder. As in Evan's previous books, Joe tops the list of likely murder suspects.

The story revolves around a new road, a pot field, an Indian mound, a county fair, cultural disagreements, a recent murder, and an old hate crime. Mary Anna Evans had to do a lot of complicated plotting to mix all those diverse things into one cohesive storyline. I'm not altogether sure she succeeded. Several portions of the book lagged seriously as the author tried to introduce new elements into the story. The county fair was a complete waste of time as was Evan's rewriting of old Indian legend. These old stories require a lot of detail and atmosphere, both are absent in this emotionless retelling.

The greatest flaw in the book was that the killer was obvious very early on. Sometimes knowing who the killer is doesn't matter, but in this case knowing is fatal to the enjoyment of the book. Another serious flaw; Evans has never been on an actual dig. She has Faye doing things with a trowel that a backhoe would struggle to accomplish.

The reason for the questions at the book's end escaped me. It seemed almost as though the author was trying to pass fiction off as serious research.

5 out of 5 stars MUST READ MYSTERY.......2007-03-29

I've just finished the second reading of this third installment, which only happens with books I truly enjoy, and it was as entertaining as a the first. This is one of my favorite mystery series' because I get so caught up in the story that I don't spend a lot of time trying to think ahead of the author's vision and simply let the story unfold naturally. The characters are so thoroughly developed that I never find myself questioning their actions, as I often do with most mystery series. I don't feel that the protagonist or sidekick is ever doing something completely out of character; instead, I find myself understanding them more clearly, which is thoroughly refreshing.

Fay's honest objectivity and Joe's quiet strength and complete loyalty makes this duo irresistible and endearing, although it's obvious to everyone but herself that no one else will ever "get" Fay the way Joe does.

Mary Anna Evans, I admire your work - keep them coming!

5 out of 5 stars another deep dig!.......2007-03-01

In this third mystery of this series, we are in the world of archeology with Faye Longchamp and her yummy sidekick Joe Wolf Mantooth. They have, once again, left their comfort zone of Joyeuse Island in north Florida to excavate a site for a company building a highway in Neshoba County, Mississippi. The site happens to be very close to Nanih Waiya, a mound considered sacred by the Choctaws. When the archeologists, one of them local to the area, see another `mound' across the street from where they are digging, they ask for permission to excavate it, as well. The owner, Carroll Calhoun, a local man of many years, runs them off the property and then tries to destroy the mound with a bulldozer. A community uprising ensues, with many different tensions causing it. The local sheriff is able to control the crowd and protect the mound until the laws are interpreted, but that didn't stop someone from deciding that Calhoun should die. When Joe and Faye find his body, throat slit, in a grove of marijuana plants, suspicions abound, especially on Joe because of his flint-knapping abilities. As Faye is trying to protect Joe from the outside world, she is trying to work on her assignment while also attempting to save a possible effigy, not to mention her own life and the lives of her friends. While it appears like there are many characters and stories to follow, the plot is sound, as well as the research that went into the story. There is definitely a lot of character development, and some of the descriptions make you want to go out and sift through the dirt with them.

5 out of 5 stars A must read for mystery fans.......2007-02-23

Reviewed by Paige Lovitt for Reader Views (10/06)

"Effigies" has it all. Mary Anna Evans manages to incorporate romance, archeological information, Native American history, and issues with racial prejudice in to her mystery. I loved reading this fiction novel. At the end of the book, the author has a section that discusses aspects of her story that are actually true. This made "Effigies" much more enjoyable because as she slips the well-researched information into her story, she also slips this knowledge into our minds.

The tale takes place in Mississippi. Faye and her friend Joe are excavating a Choctaw Indian site that sites near Naih Waiha which is a sacred mound. This mound sits on private property. The owner, Carroll Calhoun, is a farmer that does not want his land touched. He is afraid that he will lose the right to farm on his land if it is discovered how important this site actually is. This problem creates an interesting dilemma for the local people. The farmers want to support this farmer because they are also in danger of having to go through the same experience. The local Indians do not want the site disturbed at all. They see the archeologists as grave robbers. This creates an additional problem for one of the Choctaw Indians on the team. This matter becomes really serious when Calhoun tries to tear the mound down. He ends up getting murdered.

Before Calhoun's murder, a black politician steps forward to tell a story about an attempt that was made on his life when he was a young man in this town. He would like the people who attacked him to step forward, and to learn the identity of the man who helped rescue him. The question arises as to whether or not Calhoun was involved with this, and if his murder was related to this or to his attempted destruction of the mound. The plot thickens as certain people try to cover up the past.

"Effigies" is a story that should not be missed. I really enjoyed how well the characters are developed. It is really easy to visualize them. The descriptions of the surrounding area are vivid. I also enjoyed the Indian folklore stories that area put in between some of the chapters. It enriched my experience as a reader. I felt more in touch with the Choctaw tribe. The twists and turns of the plot kept me on the edge of my seat guessing. This story is third in the Faye Longchamp archaeological series. It was the first one for me to read and now I cannot wait to go back and read her earlier stories.

4 out of 5 stars fun romantic amateur sleuth thriller.......2007-01-28

In Mississippi, archaeologist Faye Longchamp and her live-in lover Joe Wolf Mantooth lead a dig on sacred Choctaw property. Nearby is a better mound on the farm of Carroll Calhoun, who could not care less about someone else's heritage. When asked if an archeological dig could occur, Carroll says no and remarks he will bulldoze the mound before he allows the State to apply historical preservation rules and impound his property.

Nashoba County Sheriff Neely Rutland calms everyone down before a confrontation occurs. He agrees to obtain a legal opinion on the ownership and disposition of the mound. At the same time, former Congressman Lawrence Johnson Judd gives a talk about almost dying at the hands of a mob until some unknown person saved his life. Soon afterward, someone slashes Calhoun's throat and Judd is hospitalized from a near fatal drug overdose. Unable to mind her business and let Neely handle matters, Faye investigates but is unaware that she places Joe and herself in danger from a killer with motive entrenched in the county's past.

The archeology combined with Native-American lore enhances a fun romantic amateur sleuth thriller though why Faye needs to sleuth remains a question even with her work requiring plenty of clues gathering. The story line is action-packed even before the corpse is found as the audience will feel the enthusiasm of the team as they uncover their findings. The whodunit is delightfully disguised so that like the sheriff and the archeologist, readers will struggle to solve it. This is a superb murder mystery as the sum of the parts make for a fantastic whole.

I love these guys...the particular copy that I got from amazon had been stolen from a library, but the read was still good and imagine the late fees that the poor sap who sold it to me will have har har har. Seriously, its a good series and you should read it, but don't buy over 10 until I do.

4 out of 5 stars An Important Volume On The Assassin's Road.......2003-05-12

Black Wind is probably the most important volume of Lone Wolf and Cub to date, as we find out the reason why Ogami Itto travels the assassin's road with his son Daigoro. The blueprint for the coming conflict with the Yagyu Clan is laid out, and Itto gains an important new weapon for his quest. As usual, creators Kazuo Koike & Goseki Kojima create a richly layered story, with dazzling action and deep characterization. Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars We learn what Ogami Itto is up to on the Assassin's Road.......2002-10-13

When I read the first story in Volume 5 of the Lone Wolf and Cub by Kazuo Koike and Goseki Kojima, I thought that the manga epic had finally started to level off a bit. But "Black Wind" might be the most important volume so far in the series in terms of laying out the larger scope of the story:

(24) "Trail Markers" is much shorter tale than we have been used to of late in this series. The Yagyu have discovered the symbols by which Ogami Itto is contacted by those who wish to hire an assassin and they send the man who was his chief rival for the post of Kogi Kaishakunin. Given this particular part of the epic's backstory that is revealed, I would have thought this would have occasioned a more detailed story, but this one really cuts to the quick.

(25) "Executioner's Hill" has a group of bounty hunters deciding to go after Lone Wolf & Cub. Their leader has a personal score to settle for one of the executions Ogami performed for the shogun and the group decides to capture Daigoro and trade him for his father's fortune. For the first time, we have are given a reason for why Ogami has been collection 500 ryo for each assassination.

(26) "Black Wind" certainly deserves to be the title story of Volume 5. For the first time Daigoro may well be truly happy, for he has a new father who works in the rice paddies planting the crop. The Black Wind is a south wind blowing up during the rainy season, an unusual natural force, that serves as an apt metaphor for Ogami Itto's presence in this pastoral setting. Of course, no good deed goes unpunished in Edo-period Japan.

(27) "Decapitator Asaemon" tends to confirm the hypothesis from "Executioner's Hill" regarding Ogami-Itto's master plan. The Shogunate may well believe the Yagyu set up Ogami because the coveted the post of Kogi Kaishakunin, but they are still offended by Ogami having gone Ronin. The title character of this story holds the post of Kiri-Yaku, who tests the cutting edge of the Shogun's Sashiryo sword. Considered Ogami's equal by his master, Asaemon is dispatched to end Lone Wolf's walk along the assassin's road.

(28) "The Guns of Sakai" marks what may well be an important chapter in the Lone Wolf and Cub epic. The assassin is hired to kill a gunsmith who has been making guns for other clients besides the Shogunate. However, Ogami's victim has a very interesting final request: that he be allowed to pass on his secrets to his apprentices. Ogami's agreement to this request may prove to be very significant down the assassin's road.

So while the first of these five stories is a minor piece, the other four tales supply some of the biggest pieces in the puzzle that is developing. The attention to historical detail continues to become a bigger part of the series while continuing to offers it compelling mix of ultra-violence with deep honor and paternal love. I have been reading a single story each night in an effort to savor each one. "Lone Wolf and Cub" deserves the reputation it enjoys as a classic in its field.

4 out of 5 stars The prologue is over, and it's time for the first act........2001-06-02

Being a fan of samurai epics and manga, I had heard of "Lone Wolf and Cub" over the years and became interested in it. So when it was set to be re-published in the U.S., I wanted to see what all the talk was about. Now after reading up to this volume (and two or three volumes ahead of this one), most of the enclosed stories in this volume start to bring in a major plotline which I'm sure will last throughout the run of the series. For the beginners to the series, it's best to start back at the first volume to see how it all starts. But for those of us who have been reading the series up to this volume, this is where the payoff for the series starts. Filled with lush Black & White imagery and stunning sequences of violence, this is a must for any hardcore Manga fan!

3 out of 5 stars Slow but mostly solid.......2006-10-06

I am a huge fan of Dennis Mckiernan, warts and all. I enjoyed this book and even the quick ending but the first 3/4's were a little slow. Welcome but long drawn out character building and world traveling to get to where they needed to be. Key focus on two specific characters and almost no Warrow Arrow action left me a tad cold compared to the Iron Tower trilogy. Still, it was satisfying and left me with a little hankering for some more on the past of the Dragons & what they will do next as well as precisely what that whole segue of the armored warrows at the Iron Tower to retrieve something or other only to find that a great evils mask was missing. THen again since that great evil is "dead" I suppose that does not matter. Solid work but not great. All in all a good conclusion.

2 out of 5 stars "Falcon" doesn't fly far enough.......2002-11-14

The grand finale of the Mithgar series is, unfortunately, anything but grand. "Silver Wolf, Black Falcon" opens with plenty of promise, but it gets bogged down in the continuing plotline, underdeveloped characters, and a lot of promising material that never really gets used.

Following up from "Eye of the Hunter," Elven Dara Riatha and Baeron shapeshifter Urus just had a baby -- Bair, the "Impossible Child" who will apparently save Mithgar someday. That, and his mix of Elven, demon, human and Mage blood will allow him to go to any of those planes of existance. Around the time Bair is born, another boy of destiny is born in the Eastern land of Jung -- a child cut from a dead woman, who has a massive dragon-shaped birthmark on his head and neck.

With the help of an evil yellow-eyed demonlike mage called Ydral, the child becomes a mighty Emperor. He also gains control of the Dragonstone, and so is able to command any dragons anywhere. Bair, meanwhile, is raised and tutored by Dwarves, Elves, and the elf mariner Aravan. Fulfilling a promise, he accompanies Aravan on a journey that takes them across Mithgar toward Jung -- and then to the other worlds of Neddra (evil things), Adonar (elves), and Vadaria (Mages). And they learn that the final battle between good and evil is beginning.

One of the frustrating things about this book is that it does have a lot of promise. But unfortunately it is too wrapped up in the prior books (for instance, will newbies to Mithgar know who the heck Danner Bramblethorn is?) and too desperate to tie up the loose ends to really utilize its plot. The first part of the book is word-for-word recap from "Eye of the Hunter," and the first third of the book is essentially buildup to a plateau. And as it struggles to bring it all to a climax, it drops quite a few of the threads it was supposed to deal with.

Bair is a typical perky perfect-kid hero with special powers that nobody talks to him about. One of the worst things about him is that he's underutilized: His power to go from one plane to another really doesn't accomplish anything, plotwise. In fact, Bair never really accomplishes much at all. Aravan tells Bair not to be an idiot, engages in philosophical banter, and mopes because he thinks his girlfriend is dead. The bad guys are casually ambitious and amoral -- while this might be fine for Ydral, but his self-important pre-history Chinese emperor is a conscienceless idiot with a very big mouth. The kid has no redeeming characteristics at all, and so it's hard to really see him as a person.

Descriptions are flatter than ever, since McKiernan takes readers for the first time to Neddra, Adonar and Vadaria -- all of which are indiscernable from parts of our own world. Why bother? On the other hand, he's becoming more enamored of blood, bile, gore, and especially intestines (I don't know why he keeps mentioning intestines) and any scene with a bit of grossness or violence can be counted on to have some spilled guts. There are, however, some genuinely chilling (and disgusting) scenes, like when Ydral does his necromancer thing on a flayed man; there are also some funny scenes, though sadly too few.

And fans of this series will probably like seeing characters from prior books like Loric, Alamar, Phais and Dalavar Wolfmage, and discussions of others like Tip, Beau, Thork, Elyn and Danner. The dialogue has gradually gotten better, but there are still some really dopey moments, such as the most hackneyed love proclaimation ever ("My heart was dead, but now it lives"?) and the laughable idea of the mightiest dragon crying like a baby. That, and the dialogue of the Warrows is now almost indistinguishable from that of the Elves.

"Silver Wolf, Black Falcon" rises a bit higher than most of McKiernan's books, but it is still too self-important and too unimaginative to be even good light fun.

3 out of 5 stars A little slow for newbies to Mithgar.......2002-08-08

Very Tolkien like. Also very slow. The build up to where any part of the action takes place takes most of the book, which is surprising seeing as the first chapter is from a part that doesn't happen till 3/4 of the book. Why McKiernan decided to do that is beyond me. He only breaks the chronology of the book for that one chapter. The book is also called by the author the sequel to all the others so that may have been why I didn't get into it as much, not having read any of the other books. I give this book a C.

5 out of 5 stars If only every author would end it so well.......2001-11-15

For a while Mr. Mckiernan's characters discussing right and wrong, and the philosophizing behind it grated on my nerves. But his characters remained consistent throughout the series, from the humble and virtually carbon-copied-from-Tolkien origins in the Iron Tower Trilogy, to complex and reader-testing writing style that Mr. Mckiernan first introduced in full with Dragonsdoom, and carried on through the rest of the novels of Mithgar. His stories were consistent, and they were not overly predictable, and he always had a story to tell. Silver Wolf, Black Falcon continued that tradition, and did it triumphantly. I was impressed by how consistently Mr. Mckiernan kept to form, and with how consistently he kept to details to which he kept refering. The only real weakness is that I had to refer to the map more often than I would like, but I have that problem with many authors, and this is a small point. Also, his maps, while never quite complete to my satisfaction, are consistent with each other. I have found many inconsistencies in the works of other authors, and I believe that they detract from the story;there's always that slight voice in the back of the mind saying "that's not right." The only real problem I have with this storyline is that there is an author-generated element that this is a proto-history of our world. That is Conanesque, and usually cheapens the quality of the fiction. It does not in this case. I will miss this universe, but if Mr. Mckiernan decides not to write any more Mithgar novels, he certainly is ending on a high note. The progression of the writing from first story to last(in order of publication)is a model for all authors-to-be.

5 out of 5 stars Classic McKiernan.......2001-09-28

For those of you who love fantasy and science fiction, this is the book for you. I have been a fan of Dennis McKiernan's for several years, and was happy to discover this latest novel, which brings together most of the Mithgarian novels, was available in paperback. This is a classic story of good versus evil, and McKiernan weaves this tale with threads from most of his other novels, and brings the whole series to a conclusion that leaves the reader feeling as if he has seen a struggling world finally achieve the peace it has so ardently fought for.

Book Description

The intrigue-filled Sembia series is designed for first-time readers of Forgotten Realms books. This fourth novel in the series continues the story of one of the characters introduced in The Halls of Stormweather, the anthology of short stories that serves as the introduction to the Sembia series.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic!.......2007-05-03

"Black Wolf" by Dave Gross is the fourth installment in "Sembia" series of novels. The preceding books ranged from good to great, and considering they were written by different authors, one must give them credit for that. This novel isn't any different.

Gross succeeds in making his main character, Talbot Uskreven, heroic without making him cheesy. A rare thing in WoTC novels, indeed. In fact, all of the characters in this book are very good, consistent, interesting and somehow different. It may be the motivations that make them so memorable. Ranging from treacherous servants to demented vampires, this novel really offers a great set of heroes and villains. This book covers a year and a half, so there is much space for character development, done in a nice, natural way. No sudden epiphanies here.
The plot is also very strong, with a fair number of twists and turns, but not too hectic. It keeps a steady progress, and the author gives us something in every chapter.
I loved Gross' detailed writing. Somebody may consider it boring, but I really enjoy this kind of writing over action-centered one. I just wonder why this guy didn't write any more novels.

Usually this is the part where I write about things I didn't like about the book, but this time I'm leaving it blank.

If you liked this novel, you ought to check out Mistress of the Night (Forgotten Realms: The Priests) by Dave Gross and Don Bassingthwaite. It is a good novel, and fairly similar to this one, dealing with werewolves and all that. There is also a short story featuring Talbot and his acting troupe in Realms of Dragons anthology, written by Gross, of course.

Nothing more to say, really. You should check this book out if you like rich fantasy writing.

5 out of 5 stars The Best Faerun Book Ever Written.......2005-10-08

I know this is a bold statement, but this novel is easily the best installment in the Forgotten Realms universe. The writing and plot actually venture into the world of real "literature". The love story, action and drama of the protagonists' triple life (actor, werewolf, scion of an important family) all combine to make a truly compelling novel. This is probably not a good "first" Forgotten Realms Novel: I always recommend Shadowdale, Tantras and Waterdeep, but if you are looking for a good tale set in everyone's favorite fantasy campaign world, this is where to look.

5 out of 5 stars Great Sembia book!.......2005-08-18

The Sembia series is a series of books that intriqued me fromt he start. An interesting concept having a bunch of authors write books about the same cast of characters for the most part. Yet, this book stuck out in the series to me.

It's a fantastic take on werewolves int he Forgotten realms setting. When you really think about it there haven't been a lot of book in the Forgotten Realms dedicated to Werewolves or Vampires. Yet, this one tackles werewolves in grand fashion. The plot is seemingly easy to understand until you get deeper into the book and it starts to get more complex.

The character development through out the book is very subtle, but effectively done. I also like how the main character, Talbot, is not the typical hero in that he has doubts and he's not perfect, he has flaws. He's not all powerful, he can be hurt. Truly a great character to read about.

Fans of the Forgotten Realms will enjoy this book. People just coming into the Forgotten Realms could do worse than starting with this one.

4 out of 5 stars OVERALL SCORE: (B-).......2004-03-23

'Black Wolf' is the follow-up to the short story in the "Sembia - Halls of Stormweather" anthology. It centers on Talbot, the youngest and somewhat estranged son of a noble family who has recently become a werewolf, and the two strange concurrent plots about why he was infected with lycanthrope. The plot regarding the `weird vampire thing' was somewhat disappointing, hard to follow and boring. The plot regarding Rusk and the God Malar, was by far the more interesting part of the story, and the book would have been much better if it would have only had this plotline.

Book Description

Pagan Warner is marrying Greg, in an effort to erase her turbulent past. All she wants is a peaceful life in rural New Jersey, but her past catches up with her in the form of bad boy 'Wolf', who seduced her as a teenager. Tempted into rekindling their intensely sexual affair, she intends to break off the illicit liaison once she is married. However, Pagan has underestimated the Wolf's obsession. Fabulously nasty characters, dirty double-dealing and full of forbidden lusts!

4 out of 5 stars Impressive Erotica! A First for Me...very surprised.......2004-04-02

A first for me in this genre and recommend to me because it is published by a company called Black Lace that specializes in erotic fiction written by women for women. I gave it a reluctant shot worrying that it would be all sex and no character development or storyline worthy of a novel. Boy I was surprised to find an in-depth story with really deep characters.
The author did a wonderful job writing this tale of greed, lust and blackmail at its finest.

Pagan Warner is a young woman with a past that included a very virile man who was her first love and still haunts her to this day, ten years later. She hasn't seen him in so long that he is a little shocked to run into him on a train going home on the evening commute. At first she thinks its her mind playing tricks since she is getting married in a few weeks to a very stable and handsome man who works hard and seems perfect for her. Cold feet must be why his image pops in her head and along with that the entire past floods her brain.

Truth be told, he is back. The Wolf that is. Richard 'Wolf' Mancini is one of the most powerful businessmen in the city and has NOT for one minute forgotten Pagan. In fact, he has devised his entire career and life around this woman that he can't get over.
Domineering and seductive, Richard will have her at all costs, even if it means breaking up her engagement.
What happens is a web of lies and deceit that begins to spiral out of control. Pagan's fiancee Greg is used a s a pawn in Richard's game and Richard will expose the weakness he has found and exploit it to its end along with his teetering professional life. Bringing in the help of an accomplice that owes him, a slinky raven-haired bombshell works on Greg relentlessly.

Will Pagan realize what's happening before its too late? Or will she fall back into the arms of her first love...

A very intense and well written story about greed, lust, backstabbing and double-dealing that truly makes for an enjoyable read. Fear not romance readers, this is got that too. I am big on romance and love ad didn't think this would deliver, but it did. Romance and all the rest all packed into this novel that may shock, but wont disappoint.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting read but..........2003-11-30

First off, I have to say that the whole uncle and niece thing is weird. But I do like the chemistry between the characters. I was kind of hoping her other books tapped in to that taboo feeling that the Richard and Pagan relationship had. I rarely like books where the character is having tons of anoymous sex but , more the execitment of who they are having that erotic realtionship with.

3 out of 5 stars Wolf At The Door.......2003-11-19

As there is no forum for authors to comment on their own work, I shall do it briefly here.

First, a big thank you to everyone who has bought any of my books. I find every review, whether negative or good, to be extremely helpful and appreciate the time anyone has taken to commit their thoughts to screen.

Wolf is my first book, and as such I have great affection for the characters, especially Richard, who has followed me around since childhood, in varying guises, and continues to do so.

As an experiment, I threw everything in but the kitchen sink and somehow it came together (no pun intended), but I make no apologies if the content is objectionable to some. The whole point of good fiction is to arouse emotions, however controversial they may be. Thank you for letting me know I have succeeded!

Technology demands that I rate the book, so I have given it three stars because I want the readers to make up their minds. (Four stars? She would, she wrote it! Or, one star? Why should I buy it if the author thinks it is crap?)

1 out of 5 stars Highly objectionable.......2003-09-24

I love a good spicy erotic read, but this is not it. do not buy this book if you have any objection to the following:
1-incest (niece and uncle) is the the whole basis for the central relationship in the book
2-heavy cocaine/drug use
3-non-consensual sex
4-domestic violence
5-gang violence and murder.
6-blackmail and sexual guilt

These may well make for interesting reading elsewhere, but but in the context the author provides.
And bdsm is supposed to have a clear context and rules, not a frustrated man bashing the supposed heroine around.
The heroine is a twit and as a result of the above the book is about as spicy as peanut butter.
Normally I like this author but this book give erotica a bad name.

MATTHEW WINTER SKY IS A DANGEROUS MAN WORKING UNDERCOVER IN A BIKER GANG. PATIENCE O'HARA IS A VETERINARIAN ON VACATION WHOSE CAR BREAKS DOWN IN THE MIDDLE OF THE DESERT. NATURALLY, THE BIKER GANG HAPPENS UPON HER AND MATTHEW (AKA "INDIAN") RESCUES HER AND CLAIMS HER AS HIS WOMAN. THEY TRAVEL AND CAMP WITH THE BIKERS FOR OVER A MONTH WHILE MATTHEW WATCHES AND WAITS FOR INFORMATION TO BRING DOWN THE GANG. OVER THIS TIME, PATIENCE DISCOVERS THINGS ABOUT HIM THAT DON'T ADD UP. HE IS NOT CRUEL OR ROUGH WITH HER, HE MAKES SURE SHE HAS AS MUCH COMFORT AS IS POSSIBLE IN SUCH A RUGGED ENVIRONMENT. SHE DEDUCES MANY THINGS BY INTUITION, AND MATTHEW, BEING PART APACHE, RESPECTS HER FOR THIS. THEY OVERCOME THEIR SUSPICIONS OF EACH OTHER, AND OF COURSE, LOVE HELPS. THE AUTHOR IS A LITTLE "WORDY" AT TIMES, FOR ME, GOING ABOVE WHAT IS NECESSARY IN DESCRIBING DETAILS OR IN CONVERSATIONS BUT ALL IN ALL, IT WAS A VERY GOOD BOOK.

    Book Description

Means is the most controversial Indian leader of our time. This is the well-detailed, first-hand story of his life so far, in which he has done everything possible to dramatize and justify the Native American aim of self-determination, such as storming Mount Rushmore, seizing Plymouth Rock, running for President in 1988, and-most notoriously-leading a 71-day takeover of Wounded Knee, South Dakota, in 1973. This visionary autobiography by one of our most magnetic personalities will fascinate, educate, and inspire. As Dee Brown has written, "A reading of Means's story is essential for any clear understanding of American Indians during the last half of the twentieth century."

3 out of 5 stars Good book on Russell Means.......2007-07-07

This is a thorough and long book by Russell Means about his life as an American Indian. He has a lot of hatred toward the white race, which is understandable, but it makes his book hard to read at times because his hatred comes through the pages. He is also obviously biased at points, but that is to be expected because it is an autobiography. However, this man has been through a lot and has done a lot for AIM (american indian movement) so this is a good read to find out about that. If you can get past the hatred in this book, it's worth the read.

5 out of 5 stars Like only Russwll Means can tell........2006-09-20

This book is a must read for anyone who wishes to know the true struggles of our native peoples today. This book covers it all and thumbs up.

THE AMERICAN INDIAN EXPERIENCE ---I found Russell Means portrayal of his life incredibly moving. Already having knowledge of Native American struggles, I immediately found myself floating through time and experiencing emotional identity with Mr. Means. I have shared this book many times with people I know so they can truly understand the importance the American Indian Movement has been in this country. I beg everyone to read this book. - S. Already having knowledge of Native American struggles, I immediately found myself floating through time and experiencing emotional identity with Mr. Means. I have shared this book many times with people I know so they can truly understand the importance the American Indian Movement has been in this country. I beg everyone to read this book. S. HOLMES, CHICAGO.

    1 out of 5 stars Russel Means:Idiot,bootlicker,lackey and fool.......2006-01-28

I am an African-American male, product of the struggles for humanity in the 60's. I started Russel Means book with great anticipationand finished it with unbridled digust. Where do i begin,Means lies when he says aim started the community patrols before anyone, incliding the Guardian Angesl and the Nation of Islam.Fact:The patrols were started by the Black Panther party when Means was still dealing drugs, and being an all the way live drunk. He talks of rhe confration at the BiA building and uses it to propogate his anti-black racist venom ,throught the book most African-Americans are depcited as reactionaries and/or fools. Means goes on to lie,how Indians would marry slaves and prefer to go into slavery than suffer the injustices of being Indian. Fact:Means trivalizes the holocaust my people suffered. In Dennis Banks book he cites the support the African-American community provided during the liberation of the BIA building. Means gets his cookies off villifying an dinsulting and denigrating people who, because of our shared oprresion in this country, should be his natural allies, While excusing blatant racists like Mcgovern and Janklow, and allowing himself to turn tricks for Larry Flynt. See Russell whore for 30 pieces and all the butt he can kiss. When one reads this book you get the impression there would be no Aim without Russell Means, every good idea is his,the people are lost sheep without him,Talk about mendacious meglomania. Even white supremacists group are given a greater degree of emmpathy then the African community, live a black person in America, and see how great life is,this short sighted fool cannot recognize people who have a common oppressor because of his reactionary racist tendacies. He condemns the black cops, and Ithis is the one thing er agree on,who did the oppressors biding during th biia liberation, asking how could they allow thenselves to be used to harm another disenfranchised people, yet he cannot see the simalarties with those of the Indians mecanaries who served in Vietnam and participated in the murder of a people who were fighting for their own destiny. This myopic egomaniac, see nothing wrong in murdering vietnamese for U.S. imperialiasm, not one indaian was killed by those D.C. cops. To reiterate Means neglects to mention How during the Bia liberation, the African American community provided food and spiritaul support,at yellow thunder camp,it is course a black man lacking character. Which leads one to conclude M eans is the worst type of anti-black racist, the racist who comes from the wretchded of the earth. In conclusion depsite Means facade at heart he is still a macintosh,a red and green apple(since this parasite will seel his soul for white money, despite his declarations to the contrary),but white to the core.
