"Home Delivery". Maddie knows the world may be ending with the dead returning to life, but she is handling her pregnancy, five months old, quite well on Little Tall Island.

"The Road Virus Heads North". Novelist Richard stopped at a yard sale where he had to buy an odd looking watercolor by an artist named Hastings, who committed suicide. Richard soon finds he has a companion, the kid in the picture.

"Jerusalem's Lot". In 1850 Charles writes letters to his friends Bones and Richard telling them about a deserted village Jerusalem's Lot that the Lord apparently abandoned as he describes pictures he found there that is closer to home.

"Rainy Season". John and Elise arrive in Willow, Maine where they meet Laura and Henry who warn them that it is seven years to the day it last rained toads in town and they must leave before the torrent begins.

"The Reach". Gram explains to her great-grandchildren that the Reach between Goat Island and the mainland was much wider when she was younger, but as people leave they die shrinking the distance and this is why she never stepped on the mainland.

"Uncle Otto's Truck". He writes down what he knows about his Uncle Otto who he found grotesquely dead in an oily haunting way when he delivered food as is his weekly assignment since his own father died two years ago.

These six tales are reprints of Stephen King short stories with one from 1978, two from 1985, two from 1993; and one from 2002. Thus the audience has an opportunity to see how much Mr. King has changed at least with his shorts over the two plus decades. The tales are refreshed by Glenn Chadbourne illustrations with three including pictures to enhance the vivid tales while the remainder are in graphic comic format. This is a terrific and unique anthology that fans of the grandmaster of horror will enjoy.

5 out of 5 stars You child will love this book!.......2007-08-23

Audrey and Don Wood books are always a delight to read with children. The story is fun and the illustrations are superb! The CD with this brings the story to life for the non-reading child while those reading can follow along with the text.

This story has established its place on my bookshelf as one of the all-time favorites! I would highly recommend this book to children of all ages. You can't help but have a great time reading this story!

5 out of 5 stars GREAT CHILDREN'S BOOK.......2007-06-12

This book, in the manner of all of Don and Audrey Woods' books, is entertaining and fun-filled. The premise of the story is priceless - the King is in the bathtub and he won't get out. And the different solutions to the problem that are presented are funny. And, of course, who comes to the rescue, and how? Awwww, read it to find out! This book is great for kids and adults too. :)

5 out of 5 stars Probably one of the best children's books around.......2007-05-07

This is our absolute favorite book that we read to our one year old son. We started reading it to him at around 3 months and he liked it then, and it continues to be one of his favorites. The book we received came with a CD which is fabulous and perfect for long car rides. At six months, I would play the CD at home near the end of the day or before bed time when he was on the verge of fussiness and it cheered him up right away. He dances to the songs and is absolutely calm and entranced when we listen to it in the car. Purchased the book and CD for my nieces, ages 7, 4, and 2 and they love it as well. Definitely, a winner for birth through at least 7 years. The illustrations are enchanting. A must have for every child.

5 out of 5 stars This book should be on your bookshelf.......2007-02-05

It's fun to read. The illustrations are incredible. The text is word perfect. The King is likable and how can't you agree with his every edict?

If you have never heard of this book, then today is your lucky day.

That being said, I will amend my review title: This book should be on your kid(s)' bedside table. It'll be many months before it is back on the bookshelf.

I put it up there with Goodnight Moon and Where the Wild Thing's Are. A perfect read for children (and adults) in between those books, in fact.

5 out of 5 stars King Bidgood's in the Bathtub........2007-02-03

This is one of my favorite childrens books. The illustrations are fabulous and it's a story with a lesson. When all else fails, use common sense. I love reading this book to my grandchildren. There is so much detail in each page it keeps their attention. AAAA+

Book Description

On August 28, 1963, Martin Luther King Jr. stood in front of the Lincoln Memorial looking out over thousands of troubled Americans who had gathered in the name of civil rights and uttered his now famous words, "I have a dream . . ." It was a speech that changed the course of history.

This anniversary edition honors Martin Luther King Jr.'s courageous dream and his immeasurable contribution by presenting his most memorable words in a concise and convenient edition. As Coretta Scott King says in her foreword, "This collection includes many of what I consider to be my husband's most important writings and orations." In addition to the famed keynote address of the 1963 march on Washington, the renowned civil rights leader's most influential words included here are the "Letter from a Birmingham Jail," the essay "Pilgrimage to Nonviolence," and his last sermon, "I See the Promised Land," preached the day before he was assassinated.

Editor James M. Washington arranged the selections chronologically, providing headnotes for each selection that give a running history of the civil rights movement and related events. In his introduction, Washington assesses King's times and significance.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Amazing Collection of Speeches.......2007-01-15

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is one of America's greatest heroes and this is a collection of his wonderful writings and speeches. Often people stop at "I Have a Dream" but this shows the complete evolution of Dr. King. A wonderful read that has been part of my library for the past 10 years -- and I've read it three times and often use it for reference and store it next to the Bible.

5 out of 5 stars AMERICANS SHOULD REALIZE THIS 'DREAM' TO THE FULLEST!.......2002-11-28

Dr. Martin Luther King's collection of writings and speeches, "I Have A Dream", brings aspiration to light. The events that surrounded the life and death of this true hero reveals the shameful fact that no matter how great the United States of America is today, it is one country that was nurtured with inhumane machinery: slavery, racism, injustice, Mickey-Mouse freedom, and Mickey-Mouse democracy. I hate to think about it, but it is an honest fact, which we should all come to terms with. Nobody can rewrite history.
The 256 pages that is "I Have A Dream" was enough to highlight the wickedness and the violence that were deliberately sustained in America, for a full century, after a bloody Civil War ended her tenacity on slavery.
One question that will always beg for answer is: How on earth did U.S. Presidents who presided over the ruthless color-bar era qualified for those Nobel Peace Prizes that they received? Knowing what life was like in the U.S.A. just a couple of decades ago melts my heart. "I Have A Dream" is a big eye-opener!

5 out of 5 stars The essential King.......2001-10-26

"I Have a Dream: Writings and Speeches That Changed the World," by Martin Luther King, Jr., is a fine collection of texts by this important figure. The book has been edited by James M. Washington. Coming in at less than 300 pages, this is a concise but meaty book.

Washington includes King's most important texts: the "Letter from Birmingham Jail"; the "I Have a Dream" speech; his Nobel Prize acceptance speech; "My Trip to the Land of Gandhi"; "A Time to Break Silence," his 1967 speech criticizing the United States war in Vietnam, and more. These writings and speeches cover King's great themes: nonviolent resistance, the African-American civil rights movement, etc.

Those seeking a more comprehensive collection of Kings' work should seek out "A Testament of Hope: The Essential Writings and Speeches of Martin Luther King, Jr." also edited by James M. Washington. At more than 700 pages, this is a truly monumental collection, and includes much material not found in "I Have a Dream": the 1965 "Playboy" interview, transcripts of television interviews, and more. But for those who want a shorter text that cuts to the heart of King's life and work, "I Have a Dream" is perfect.

"I Have a Dream" reveals King to be a true Christian prophet, and a man with a global vision. As literature, these texts also show King to be the heir of such American thinkers as Henry David Thoreau and W.E.B. DuBois. Highly recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent introduction to Dr. King's works.......2000-10-21

This collection of Dr. King's writings includes all the major speeches -- such as I Have A Dream and I See the Promised Land, as well as important writings such as Letter from A Birmingham Jail. It also has great essays on the lessons Dr. King learned from Ghandi and a wonderful introduction from Mrs. King. This is a great collection to get started learning about Dr. King -- from his own pen. I highly reccomend it.

5 out of 5 stars Inspirational.......2000-06-21

Reading the speeches of Dr. King are inspiring. You get a glimpse into his mind and to genuinely understand the struggle he was up against. I'm not just refering to the Civil Rights movement. you also get insights into the responsibilities and pressure he felt as the leader of this movement. He was a man who changed history. This book offers glimpses into his humanity as well as his motivational and inspirational speeches. A must for anyone interested in American history, the Civil Rights movement or in biographys. It will continue to effect you long after you have put the book down.

The first and only comic book to receive the World Fantasy Award, The Sandman continues to break new ground in the comic book medium and beyond. Author Alisa Kwitney explores its beginnings and chronicles the comic's emergence as a unique and undeniable force in the literary world. Richly illustrated, this history shows how Gaiman and The Sandman's gifted artists, such as Dave McKean and Yoshitaka Amano, create a haunting (and haunted) main character who wields immense power. With illustrations never before published, behind-the-scenes stories, handwritten notes, and interviews with Gaiman himself, this volume is a true testament to the dream king and his creator.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Nice return visit to an interesting world . . ........2007-08-19

From the fall of 1987 to the beginning of 1996, Neil Gaiman worked mostly on the "Sandman" series of comics, . . . which became trade book collections, and merchandise, and fannish websites, and spin-off books by other writers. Morpheus gave it all up in the end, but the readers haven't. One of the best spin-offs is this overview, or commentary, or summation, of the series, from the first issue to the last, by one of the assistant editors with whom Gaiman worked. She's gone on to other things, too, but she obviously can't leave the Endless behind any more than the paying readers can. It's nice to be able to revisit, all in one place, the wide range of artists who worked on the series and to read Gaiman's brief comments on the origins of certain story arcs and the interconnections between others, not all of which were intentional. And, as Kwitney says, if you've picked up this book without having read about the Sandman, . . . well, now's your chance.

4 out of 5 stars Beautiful and Informative.......2004-05-04

Sandman: the King of Dreams is a wonderful coffetable-eque art book. However, it also contains many insights into the world of the Sandman and the creative process. Alisa Kwitney was a one time editor of the comic series and brings wonderful anecdotes about the writers, artists and characters that I have not heard anywhere else. This bok is clearly written with love for the world of The Sandman.
The art is also gorgeuos. images from the comics are replicated here in a wonderful format. also there are many images taken from other comics and trading cards and several that have been hiding in the editorial vault.
though this book is not as detailed as Hy Bender's wonderful ode to the series, and the two do cover the same ground on occasion, this is an excellent addition to anyones'sSandman library.

3 out of 5 stars Great Art, but not enough meat to go with it.......2003-11-17

"The Sandman: King of Dreams" is a coffee-table sized tribute to the 10 story arcs that comprise Neil Gaiman's beloved Sandman series. A chapter is devoted to each story arc (or corresponding graphic novel, if you will) filled with full-page reproductions directly from the stores themselves. There are also a smattering of new artwork, behind-the-scenes tidbits, quotes and such.

I adore the Sandman series, and even find repeated enjoyment in "The Sandman Companion", but I was disappointed by this book. Why?

1st, there was not enough new art to keep me from getting bored. Yes, the pages look damn good reproduced here, but still pretty much look the same here as in the graphic novels.
2nd, there is too little text to go with the visuals, and what there is seems lacking ("The Sandman Companion", though visually less appealing than "King of Dreams", has about a 100x more info in it). For example, in the chapter covering the 2nd Sandman graphic novel - Doll's House, it alludes to original artist Mike Dringenberg not being able to keep up with the monthly pace. He apparently is replaced. Sounds interesting. So what happened? Was he fired? Did he step down honorably? Is this type of thing normal in a comic series? You won't find the answer here. Getting under the skin of the story - a forte of Mr. Gaiman, is frustratingly lacking here. It comes across as a superficial glossing over of the greatest comic book series ever.

What's left is great art you've mostly seen before, some interesting tidbits and insights, and a summary of stories you already know by heart. I'd recommend this for Sandman completists who especially love the artwork. For everyone else, try the "Sandman Companion" (its cheaper and better) or just pull out your reading copies one more time for another run through.

    5 out of 5 stars Great trilogy.......2006-10-02

The final installment of Shinn's trilogy which began with The Safe-Keeper's Secret (2004) and The Truth-Teller's Tale (2005) features a young girl Kellen whose mother is convinced that she is a boy, and treats her as thus. When Kellen begins school at age 11, she meets Gryffin, a young man who needs assistance walking because of a birth defect, but whose mind soaks up information like a sponge. Kellen and Gryffin become inseparable throughout their school years, supporting one another in their difficult situations. When Gryffin needs shelter from his uncle's abuse, Kellen helps him and they become friends with many of the new travelers who visit their small town's new stagecoach stop. When it is discovered that Gryffin has taken on the magic of the Dream-Maker, Kellen has to let him go discover his powers on his own, until she follows, once again in the guise of a young man, to find that wishes do come true no matter who you are.

4 out of 5 stars Not just for young adults.......2006-07-10

This short novel is the third in Shinn's series involving young people in a semimagical realm. In this tale, we learn the story of Kellen and Gryffin. Both characters have a harsh live. Kellen's mother refuses to acknowledge that she is a girl. Gryffin is crippled and abused by his uncle. Together, they gain the strength to grow beyond their situation and find love along the way. While this is set as a young adult book, don't let that scare you away. It's enjoyable by all.

From award-winning and best-selling author, Leslie Feinberg, comes Drag King Dreams, the story of Max Rabinowitz, a butch lesbian bartender at an East Village club where drag kings, dykes dressed as men, perform.

A veteran of the women's and gay movement of the past 30 years, Max's mid-life crisis hits in the midst of the post-9/11 world. Max is lonely and uncertain about her future — fearful, in fact, of America's future with its War on Terror and War in Iraq — with only a core group of friends to turn to for reassurance. Max is shaken from her crisis, however, by the news that her friend Vickie, a transvestite, has been found murdered on her way home late one night. As the community of cross-dressers, drag queens, lesbian and gay men, and "genderqueers" of all kinds stand up together in the face of this tragedy, Max taps into the activist spirit she thought had long disappeared and for the first time in years discovers hope for her future.

5 out of 5 stars Masterful... Feinberg triumphs as an author.......2007-03-07

This book is an outstanding piece of writing. Feinberg's controlled prose leads the reader through the twists and turns of the narrative. The characters are sketched deftly. Exactly as in real life, the details are revealing and concealing in equal measure. We tread lightly because the subject matter can be senstitive, and as the reader, I found myself almost forced to read between the lines. Not even aware that I was doing so, I filled in the blanks, made assumptions.

As the narrative unfolds, a dozen little threads emerge. Sometimes its not always obvious how they will come together. But stick with the story, for Feinberg will lead you to a dazzling climax. In the final scene of the book, (SPOILER WARNING!) as the characters' names are called out, I cringed. In that one instant, Feinberg holds a mirror to the hypocrisy of my politically correct, gender-based assumptions. Feinberg humbles us with honesty. Feinberg's triumph is that ze does not tell the reader anything that we don't want to know, ze makes us realize that identity / a sense of self, transcends social stereotypes. In that climactic moment, Max' journey of self-truth and hope resonate with the reader. The book is a tale of hope, aflame with the complexities of contemporary New York and brought to life through Feinberg's brilliant, compassionate writing.

5 out of 5 stars best fiction ever!.......2007-01-05

I don't usually read fiction, but this was the best I have ever read. Feinberg wrote a colourful book I just couldn't put down. I recently ordered another book by the same writter, and can't wait for it to arrive!

    4 out of 5 stars a must-read.......2006-07-31

Wow, good book! It's about a courageous lesbian who works at a bar, dealing with the struggling world and trying to live the best life she can possibly live with all the problems in the world. The main character, Max, is always fearful of the future and doesn't always know what the future will hold for, not only her, but everyone else. When she becomes an activist for gay rights, the story really picks up and will certainly keep your interest.

5 out of 5 stars Build community! Organize! Practice Activism!.......2006-06-24

Building community, organizing, and practicing activism, are three strong currents in Leslie Feinberg's Drag King Dreams.

More specifically, Drag King Dreams traces the journeys of the protagonist, Max Rabinowitz.

Some of these journeys are late night/early morning commutes to and from the bar where Max works. Seemingly innocuous, Feinberg illustrates the way such commutes, which are humdrum for most, are fraught with threats and dangers, often harmful, and sometimes deadly for Max and others like him.

Some of the trips Max takes are virtual ones into a universe where even with created, cyber bodies, we manage to socialize in ways that marginalize those who are perceived as different, but where outsiders pulling from a bank of shared signs still manage to find one another and connect. These virtual worlds are also places where Max learns that though there are rules in place that have determined and constructed the worlds as such, there are other rules and ways to re-construct and build them alternatively.

Then there are the emotional journeys Max takes towards and away from his friends, those he's chosen as his family. At times the bonds of love among Max and his friends are so fierce that it's almost impossible to imagine a tighter knit, more committed, or stronger community. The way in which they pull together to protect, support, and encourage one another is a testament to the deep power of such unselfish love. And yet despite Feinberg's inclusion of this much needed glimpse into an ideal, sometimes utopian love, ze also reflects other elements of hir characters' humanity--their bursts of anger, moments of desire-driven jealousy, they fear-filled recoil from others' touches, etc. Overall, Feinberg paints hir characters in all their marvelous complexities, while never letting go of the conviction that unity is possible. In the end Max's final moves are closer towards his friends, the larger community, and perhaps most significantly towards himself.

It is these interpersonal and intrapersonal journeys throughout Drag King Dreams that showcase Feinberg's ability to tell an important and touching story about the intertwined lives we live, and the need for us to join in struggle with one another, fighting the wars (literal and metaphorical alike) side-by-side until justice is achieved. Ze doesn't make it seem as if such coalitions are easy, but does tell hir story so well that despite the difficulties, we are utterly convinced of the absolute necessity of just complicated, hard work.

(I must make clear here that these are but a minor fraction of the various journeys Feinberg takes readers on in this novel...there are just too many gems in this book to write about them all here--I will say, though, that other journeys of note included lingual journeys through Yiddish chronicling Max's connections to his Jewishness and journeys through addiction, recovery, and the accompanying struggles towards serenity.)

Feinberg's writing is beyond compelling, and anyone who finishes reading this book and isn't moved to action of some kind, well...just isn't awake.

5 out of 5 stars Murdered Crossdressers, and Other Facts of Trans Life.......2006-06-03

I'm not sure Leslie Feinberg has an actual fan club, but if there is one, I want in.

Crossdressers, buy this book. Leslie Feinberg is the mensch you want at your back, believe me.

    4 out of 5 stars A shame it's no longer in print.......2005-12-27

If you have any curiosity at all about the man who built those famous, fairytale castles in Germany, this is an excellent overview. It pairs a good, basic biography with loads of images and pulls the reader into Ludwig's world in a way a less well-illustrated biography might not. The images are, in fact, the strongest part of this book since the narrative, though good, isn't what you'd call a comprehensive study of Ludwig's life. If you want depth, you'll have to look elsewhere. But for a better understanding of the king and the time and place in which he lived, this is an excellent beginning.

5 out of 5 stars "Forever an Enigma" - The Dream King is a Wonderful Book.......2005-12-14

With photos on nearly every page and over twenty full page plates this book is beautifully put together and paints an interesting picture of the most enigmatic of German Kings. The book portrays the king as a lover of German Myth and art and more than anything Richard Wagner. While it dabbles into the question of whether Ludwig II truly was "mad" it doesn't definitively answer the question. It does however go to great lengths to describe the behavior, misanthropy, lack of desire to act as king and above all excessive spending of the King. To some extent the book also explores the circumstances that may have caused Ludwig to live more in his dream world than in reality. His father was stern and offered little support and guidance to the heir to the throne and the political climate in pre-unified Germany was rife with turmoil and war. And finally (and possibly most importantly) he ascended the throne at 19. All of these factors provide ample reasons why Ludwig would find being king as a challenge. His romantic temperament which is emphasized in the book took over...

Where the true greatness of this book is in the accounts, letters, primary sources used to describe the kings loney and enigmatic life. In spite of the strangeness of the king you cant help but pity him. His only contact with the real world was in his midnight rides through the alpine dorfs of Bavaria where he felt relaxed and and showed the peasants only kindness. He also was incredibly genrous with these people and the few others he took a liking too even if he did require them to go at great lengths to please him including trecking over Swiss Glaciers to re-enact a scene from Schiller's "William Tell"

I found this book to be both beautiful and enjoyable. It was a fast read however I found the "The Swan King" to be a far more complete and thorough work that explored Ludwig's Bavaria and Europe better than this one. If you are looking for an easy to follow and wholly enjoyable read "The Dream King" is for you. This is the perfect book to bring on a flight to Munich since it will only take a few hours to read and sets the scene for the cultural treasures of Bavaria. Reading and viewing this book you will understand why Bavarians today think so kindly of Ludwig II. Ludwig shows us that all great men need to be a little eccentric to see beyond the plane of the average and Ludwig'eccentricity did much to add to German culture and to beautify Bavaria. Like his grandfather he did more to beautify Munich and Bavaria and any other of the Wittelsbach and only adds to the charm of southern German culture.

5 out of 5 stars Aesthete, Genius, King.......2004-09-25

Ludwig was both a romantic & a mystic. This book reveals the extent to which his synthesis of both blurred into his life, & complicated his reign. Those who would label him "mad", however, are utterly misguided. Examine his fabulous creations, & you'll understand why even today, folks come from the four corners of the world just to see them.

4 out of 5 stars An wonderfully interesting book..........2000-04-25

This wonderful book depicts the life of King Ludwig II. It is filled with lovely photographs and color plates of Ludwig and his castles.

While some of the book is contradictory and quite speculative (i.e. far fetched assumptions about Ludwig's "presumed" homosexuality), overall it is a wonderful composition that make a great compliment to any collection. It is well written and quite intriguing--I have found information in this book that I haven't found elsewhere.

I definitely recommend this book. It will keep you up reading all night, so take my advice and be sure to get it in hardcover! Four and a half stars!
