Book Description

One heroic schoolteacher has saved hundreds of lives with unconditional love and zero tolerance for rule-breakers.

His students are the worst of the worst—drug addicts, gang members, and violent criminal offenders. They have flunked out or been thrown out of every other school they’ve attended. They may be the children of addicts, of abusers, or even of good parents, but they have one thing in common: they have been rejected by everyone except Paul White. With ten simple rules, he has helped hundreds of kids turn their lives around.

“I can’t remember when I’ve been this happy. Since I came here I’m getting right with my family and friends, I’m off the drugs and staying out of trouble. I’m doing really well in school and I’ve got a job.”
—Kathy, fifteen, West Valley student, former crystal meth user

“He never gives up on you.”
—Roger, seventeen

Among students, they’re the worst of the worst: chronic truants, drunks, drug addicts, even violent criminals. Some haven’t been to school for months, even years. Some have spent a year or more locked up for gang-related offenses and felony assaults. All of them, it seems, are on the short list of life’s early losers.

Enter Paul White, the teacher whose combination of unconditional love and unbreakable rules has changed, and sometimes saved, the lives of the most troubled students in Detroit, the San Francisco Bay Area, and Los Angeles. When they walk through the door of his one-room high school, the West Valley Leadership Academy in Canoga Park, California, White treats them like his own children: loving them, protecting them, and requiring them to become men and women of moral courage, integrity, and high achievement.

Sometimes it only takes one person to turn the tide. During his twenty-five-year career as a teacher, Paul White has saved hundreds of students from falling through the cracks. Veritable miracles have taken place in his classroom:

?The reading skills of a fourteen-year-old recovering crystal meth addict climbed from a seventh- to a tenth-grade level in six months. She finished high school at age sixteen and went on to complete a nursing program.

A fifteen-year-old girl was flunking out of school—and so violent that the safety of the people around her couldn’t be guaranteed. After joining Paul’s class, she not only brought her grades up enough to graduate from high school at sixteen, but has gone on to finish several semesters at a local community college.

A seventeen-year-old boy who had been a neo-Nazi asked a Holocaust survivor to forgive him for his disrespectful behavior.

White’s Rules is a lesson to parents and educators who can’t control their kids or their classrooms. For Americans who truly want to stop the violence, end the apathy, and improve academic performance, White poses a challenge: Try his rules. The ten-rule list that he developed covers everything from character values to schoolwork, from getting off drugs to learning personal finance skills. By enforcing these rules, parents and educators can attack both the causes and the effects of the crisis in our schools. This is the moving story of how the program evolved and what we can all do to save our youth, one kid at a time.

4 out of 5 stars -.......2007-06-08

I thought this book covered some very practical ideas. A lot of the stories found in the book were a bit surprising. He truly made a turn around with some of these kids. He also admits that not everything worked.

At times I found myself getting a little caught up with his sense of an ego lingering through the pages. I almost felt as if there was a bit of bragging going on. Although I think he is a man who deserves to boast since he sacrificed a lot of time and money to help others, not mention often putting his life at risk for his kids.

I gained a couple of good ideas about how to get kids inspired to do things, to build up courage to do the right thing, to ask more of parents, and most of all to emphasize strong morals and values. I'm not talking about religious morals, he vaguely mentions them, I'm talking about being a good person and fighting for justice in your daily life.
He talked about sacrifice, work ethic, respect, integrity. I even learned some things about these values myself. It's what this nation educational system is lacking and I'm glad he brought up!

One thing I found faulty with his system: he had the option of kicking kids out of his schools if they chose not to comply with his standards. That is one very significant option teachers and parents usually don't have.

However, he emphasized parents roles in their children's lives. I would definitely recommend this to parents, because he acknowledges that more often than not bad behavior is caused by a weak structure at home, reading this would only help. He really brings these kids back from the dead as well as some families in the process. I'm glad someone finally acknowledged the growing problem of education systems: the lack of care or concern for these kids BEYOND the classroom.

5 out of 5 stars Every school district administrator should read this........2007-05-14

Mr. White doesn't claim to have a system to cure all of the schools' ills but he certainly has a good start. He also makes the statement that today's kids aren't any worse than we were but just the boundaries aren't as well defined as we had back in the 50's and 60's.

Mr. White does admit to his failures, not every one has coming through his doors went out a better human being but many are able to shop where they want and get ahead instead of stuck in the same dependency cycle.

His rules are simple. He outlines them in the book and how he applies them. He told a story on the radio about a wealthy parent pulling her child out of an expensive private school to attend his charter school. The usual method of admission to his school, Mr. White jokes, is 2 felony convictions. The wealthy parent was impressed with how the kids behaved and were learning much more than at the expensive private school.

Now there is a caveat here, Mr. White's school is only 30 to 40 students with himself, a probation officer, and another teacher in a tough part of town. The teachers and the students spend the whole school day together talking about personal issues as well as the educational topics.

Mr. White has taught in regular schools and admits he has as many non-contract renewals as awards, so everything has not been a bed of roses. He says the biggest key is the administration backing up the teachers and principals. The parents need to talk with the teachers - so this isn't just a teacher working against the system but creating a support system for the students.

5 out of 5 stars white's Rules..common sense.......2007-04-23

paul white has made it simple...just do what is already available to do..the kids will get there if we let them and encourage them. this is a must read for everyone...

i passed this book on to some teachers and adminstrators...they tell me there is a waiting list to read it.

well done

5 out of 5 stars Making a difference.......2007-04-19

There's tendency as a veteran teacher of twenty-five years to think I have all the answers about how to run an effective classroom. White's Rules is a reminder that what is basic in life is also basic in the classroom. The classroom must provide more than academic instruction; it must be a place where teachers establish the primary values and morals that their students need to survive in the world outside the classroom. This book shows how teachers can demand bedrock solid values of their students and reap the rewards of mutual respect that such values create. White's Rules is not just a book for inner city teachers and their "incorrigibles" it is also a book for teachers like me in the suburbs with diverse middle class kids. The combination of strict consistent discipline and unconditional love is a formula that works. I recommend this book to anyone looking to find what's essential and what works in the classroom today.

5 out of 5 stars Teaching morals is just as important as teaching science, math, hisory, etc.......2007-04-15

I agree with the many points that White makes. Kids will naturally test limits and so clearly defined limits with significant consequences are necessary. But while enforcing rules that students must be punctual, not swear, and not dress like a gangster are worthwhile, the later half of the book is the most important. Teachers should not simply teach kids academics, they also need to teach morals, how to live right, to care for others, and to make a difference. While his rules might not be able to be enforced so strictly everywhere, I think they can be modified and adapated for most schools and other similar organizations. The book is motivational and encouraging, I recommend it to parents, educators, and anyone who works with groups of adolescents.

Book Description

For well over a century, the G. Schirmer edition of 24 Italian Songs and Arias of the 17th and 18th Centuries has introduced millions of beginning singers to serious Italian vocal literature. Offered in two accessible keys suitable for all singers, it is likely to be the first publication a voice teacher will ask a first-time student to purchase. The classic Parisotti realizations result in rich, satisfying accompaniments which allow singers pure musical enjoyment. For ease of practice, carefully prepared accompaniments are also recorded on CD by John Keene, a New York-based concert accompanist and vocal coach who has performed throughout the United States for radio and television. Educated at the University of Southern California, Keene has taught accompanying at the university level and collaborated with Gian Carlo Menotti and Thea Musgrave on productions of their operas.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent For Beginner Sopranos.......2007-08-08

I think all sopranos know this is the first book! Ofcourse it's great, these are the songs that build our voices and charater to become better sopranos and performers!

5 out of 5 stars If you are a true Singer, this book is a MUST.......2007-04-10

Apply this and bring it to all of your voice lessons. Singing Arias assists in your singing of ANY song and ANY Genre. If your teacher is unable to get you to reach this point, I suggest a new teacher.

5 out of 5 stars Classic Beginner Repertoire..........2004-04-07

Affectionately known as "Old Yeller" (so-called because of the yellow Schirmer cover), the Schirmer edition of these songs has been a staple at voice studios in the United States and the U.K. Similar editions of this repertoire have appeared by various companies, though this one continues to be the best seller. The reason for this is simple - these songs are immediately accessable to the beginning student, not only for their beauty, but the simple and modern arrangements.

There is something for every aspect of technique in this book. One can spend many years, in fact, just digesting and singing from this book alone. They range from moderate in difficulty, to difficult, to quite advanced. I would advise the beginner to start with a less advanced piece, such as "Nel Cor piu non mi sento" or "Sebben Crudele", then build the voice with something like "Per la gloria", "Caro mio ben", and "Gia il sole", and them attempt the harder works like "O del mio dolce ardor" and "Il mio bel foco (Quella fiamma)." One sees beginning students dismiss all the pieces as "beginner repertoire" and go straight to the harder ones first. Unless a singer can hit all notes with proper technique, has near perfect pronunciation, and has emoting the meaning of the song down to an art (and truly, this is an art) he or she should not even attempt to approach the more difficult pieces. So often are these pieces performed badly and too early in a singer's progress.

Contrary to popular opinion, the original versions of many of these songs (including some of the Scarlatti works) have been lost or cannot be duplicated faithfully with a piano. Granted, the Paton edition contains more songs, additional lyrics to several songs, and more accurate translations, but try getting a timid voice student enthusiastic about singing what sounds like a Bach cantata on a respirator? I find the arrangements on that compilation a poor attempt to make the Baroque melodies sounds more "authentic" by affixing cliché chords of the era and bizzarre ornamentation. The result: a bland and often overbearing arrangement. (I use that edition solely as a reference book, for which it is excellent - not for performing.) The arrangements on this version take the melodies and let them sit organically with the arrangement - ornamentation is left for the singer to execute (where it should be), and the result is indeed inviting.

We currently have a few recording of different voice types singing these works. Cecilia Bartoli (either a soprano or mezzo-soprano depending on the day and who you ask) recorded a selection of these pieces and other melodies of the period for EMI a decade ago called "Se Tu M'ami". That recording used these arrangements, and I highly recomend it as an example of what these pieces can truly be. She plays with the works, making them sound fresh and poignant: a good study for those using this book. Equally satisfying is "Aria Antiche" by the great Verdi baritone Renato Bruson, though not for his interpretation. It's the voice itself that excites on that recording. A welcome example of what these songs can do for a student. The tenor Richard Tucker, on his "Taste of Italy", includes many of these pieces, though I feel they deserve a more intimate approach (almost akin to the German lieder) than Tucker affords. Bartoli gets it just right in this respect. All of these recordings are available through Amazon.

A few more notes: all of these songs may be performed by a male or female singer without alterations to the lyrics. Some people have tried to differentiate which are the "male songs" and which are the "female songs." The only factor in this is what sounds best. "Per la goria", though written for a female character, I prefer for males. "Se tu m'ami" I prefer for females. Both these songs could go either way, however. A second note, if you can play piano and have access to one during practice, I would suggest you stay away from the accompaniment CD. The tempi are almost always much too fast (I would break out in uncontrolable laughter listening to someone attempt to keep up with the piano during "O cessate di piagarmi"), and the dynamics are non existent.

I highly reccomend both this edition, for singing from, and the Paton edition, for reference. Pick either the medium high or medium low version (low if you can hit up to an E above middle-C; high if you can go as as far as the A above middle-C), and be happy with the feeling that you made a good investment for you vocal future.

1 out of 5 stars Don't do it!.......2003-10-11

Please don't buy this book. The editions are awful and completely out of date. I'm a full-time teacher of singing & I cringe when singers bring this in. Try "28 Italian Songs" edited by John Glen Paton. It has the same songs, but the editions are much better! Good luck.

4 out of 5 stars An absolute essential for the serious voice student.......2001-08-21

My voice teacher insisted I purchase this book and I am glad I did. We use it each week for development work, vocalizing, and learning new pieces. These songs are incredibly useful for working out the kinks you may have with other pieces, as well as just being a pleasure to sing for their natural beauty. I have a second copy of the book with the CD; I agree with the other reviewers that the CD accompaniment is way too fast. I have Cecilia Bartoli's CD, referenced by another reviewer, also and I have used it to help learn or refine some of these songs. Even so, the accompaniment CD has been useful for me in practice since I can't accompany myself. If you have a choice, I would get the version with the accompaniment CD. If you don't like the CD, you're not out more than a couple of extra dollars over what you pay for just the book.

3 out of 5 stars ok.......2004-07-06

the stamps are mounted on wood, and they are aprox. 1 inch square. the definitions are not on the stamps but are on a piece of paper included in the kit. the quality of the stamps and the red ink stamp pad are only so-so.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful, meaningful stamps.......2000-04-02

I had been searching for Chinese character stamps like these for a while and I'm glad I found them! As a student just starting to learn Chinese, I can recognize the characters just by using them! :) That's an added bonus, I think. The stamps are wood mounted and do not have the English translation on them so it looks very authentic. The included book by Barbara Aria is very helpful in understanding the historical background/cultural context behind every character. The kit also comes with a red ink pad and a sheet of paper to lay in the back in case you want to keep your stamps in the order they came in (which I do). By the way, just to help anyone who is interested, the stamp kit includes: happiness, clarity, beauty, wisdom, destiny, moon, courage, flower, forgiveness, grace, friend, harmony, love, honor, peace, star, spirit, tranquility, sunrise and truth. I highly recommend this kit if you want to add beauty and meaning to your stationary or whatever you want to stamp and learn a little Chinese as well!

1 out of 5 stars Questions/.......2000-03-03

I am very interested in this kit but have questions that I am sure others will have. Are the stamps mounted with wood? What size are the individual stamps. Are the definitions of the each stamp scripted on the stamp? Thank you for you answers. Tricia

5 out of 5 stars Arias for Soprano.......2007-07-28

These books are great. I own the coloratura edition, also, along with the Standard Literature book. They are accurate and easy to read. There are also usually a few different options for cadenzas.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Sopranos, students and pros.......2007-03-11

I was looking for this book everywhere and couldn't find it. Here in Amazon I found it absolutely new for almost 6$ less that the actual cost it has on the back cover. The edition is clear, easy to read and find and the translations are included. I highly recommend this book for all sopranos.

3 out of 5 stars Definitely for the More Advanced Soprano Vocalist.......2007-02-21

Next time, I'll check the titles of the songs more closely. I already have many of these arias in my old copy of Schirmer's Arias for Coloratura Sopranos. I was looking for something that had more arias for the beginner-intermediate level soprano. This is a good book for the more advanced soprano particularly coloratura's, however.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2006-08-21

I needed this book for my voice lessons and it was a great price and in wonderful condition. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars Valuable Addition .......2006-08-04

This is an excellent anthology for the vocally advanced soprano. Many favorite arias from numerous composers are included in this collection. The arias are in the original Italian, French, German or English. There are no translations provided.
Sheet music is increasingly costly so you are getting tremendous value with Arias for Sopranos and you have a varied selection of music in one place.

5 out of 5 stars Very Good !!!.......2002-10-27

I failed the csa on my first attempt. I took this exam easily. I took on 2001. I wanted to let those people (ECFMG) who think that it's "mainly an interpersonal skills test" know that that idea is complete? I was born and raised in Texas; I have absolutely no problem with communication skills or English. According to my score report I failed because of my patient note. So don't take this exam lightly because it's not worth failing. Then I put more attention to prepare for it....I been forced to buy a book!!!! Which book I say ??? I went to my local medical library and I found this book. Now I passed and I new where I failed on my first attempted. Yes, finally I pass and I am feel very happy, If you want pass the CSA exam my advice is take a look this book.

4 out of 5 stars I really enjoy this book.......2002-09-20

I recommend this book highly, specially if English is not your native language. This book will teach you how to make a medical note as you need in the CSA exam. Furthermore is a short a concise review.

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as People think - Not enough Info.......2002-07-12

Though NMS publishes OK books for USMLE, this one just barely makes it. It does not have all the information one would need for CSA. Coverage is inconsistent, either some topics are covered elaboratley or just ignored. Though it says CSA book, wonder if author ever took CSA, as there are not many tips or information relevant to the exam. It is more like a physical examintion ( sketchy though ) book. Not tailored for CSA, not at all. It wont be enough to read this book only for CSA.

5 out of 5 stars good review book for the csa.......2002-01-22

The book discusses everything that is needed when you are taking the CSA. It gives you pointers on communication skills, it teaches you how to do a systematic physical examination and how to write a clear, concise patient's note (the latter being the most important component of the exam). The discussions are very extensive and the author will clearly say the things needed and not needed for the CSA.
This book definitely helped me passed the CSA.

5 out of 5 stars I pass de CSA exam with this book !!!.......2002-01-20

I posted this message in other webs because I consider pertinent to do it and I like to share with everybody my happiness. I passed the CSA exam in my first attempt. English is my second language and I no had previous United States clinical experience. I am so happy with this book. I just get the results and I passed!!!!. I just read the NMS book. This book has an excellent coverage for the CSA. Many people think in the CSA exam as the USMLE boards and they try to memorize many things in mind. You need to have a different method for this certification test. The NMS gives you a good approach for the exam; there are many tips how to deal with the patients and it has a good review for patient maneuvering. Furthermore gives you many examples of how to compose medical notes as a real scenarios (this is specially helpful if English is not your mother tongue). I am so happy because I pass this expensive exam and I didn't expend extra money in one-day costly courses in Philadelphia. My advices are; get the NMS, study it with time (one month is enough), on the exam's day, relax, relax and relax !!! Do not attempt to approach the patient tying to complete a checklist or objectives, just do a clinical exam in realistic manner a focused but in the same time complete, for example; if you have a patient with impotence, talk with him, ask for medications, social factors à Etoh abuse?, etc, an do a quick general exam, examine his heart, lungs and abdomen. I had one case of tension headache, one of impotence, one stroke an so on. Many of the cases had been covered in this book some not. In summary perform a medical exam to all patients, even psych or other patients, do not perform a detailed extensive maneuvering, just one time if you consider pertinent, do not repeat painful maneuver, always explain the patient what are your tentative diagnosis and possible therapeutic / work up plan. Finally I can say that I am going to be ECFMG certified.

Book Description

The G. Schirmer Opera Anthology series revolutionized opera aria study after its release in 1991. There are so many wonderful soprano arias that a second volume was warranted. The music is predominantly for lyric soprano. As in the original volumes, these are new, clean editions, with historical and plot information about each of the 32 arias included.

4 out of 5 stars Ideal series for beginners and beyond.......2007-08-23

I've had this book since I was 17 when I first started studying voice. It's a great resource, especially for beginners who have not yet mastered Italian, French or German. It provides literal translations of every aria which is so important. It is also lightweight but sturdy. My copy is still in great shape. The only bone I have to pick is that the fach varies quite a bit from repertore suited to light lyric sopranos all the way to the dramatic. One singer obviously would not sing all of these arias. However, if your voice grows and matures I guess it's possible to start with a Handel aria in this book and progress to the heavier Puccini, depending on how your career goes. In any event, it's a nice collection of arias and you'll probably find 2 or 3 at least that you'll need at some point which is much better than shelling out cash for the complete scores.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have for Any Soprano.......2007-03-15

Although not all of the arias in this edition (or any edition for that matter) will fit one particular fach, the range and selection of pieces is really wonderful in this volume. I prefer it to the first volume, only because it has a few lesser known gems that are great audition pieces, whereas the first volume covers mostly pieces everyone has heard a million times before (though there are some of those in this volume too!).

Over all, well edited, wonderful translations and very easy to read.

5 out of 5 stars Perfect!.......2006-08-21

I needed this book for my voice lessons and it was a great price and in wonderful condition. Thank you!

5 out of 5 stars A good item to have in your music library.......2006-08-18

If you want to expand your repertoire and grow as a singer, I recommend this book and volume one of the same series. Nice translations and good background material help you develop your understanding. You won't regret having this valuable resource.

Un grand Merci à Juan Arias de partager avec nous les confessions de Paulo Coelho.
C'est un ouvrage qui effectivement nous aide à comprendre la riche personnalité de cet auteur au grand coeur.

      5 out of 5 stars Provides a great overview of Coelho's life.......2006-02-25

This book is based on a series of interviews that Juan Arias conducted with Paulo Coelho back in 1998. It provides a lot of information about the legendery author and his struggles, including experimentation with drugs and magic, being put into a mental hospital by his parents when he was a young man, and his kidnapping by paramilitaries. I also really liked how the book described Coelho's transformation after his pilgrimage on The Road to Santiago, and what he hopes his books accomplish. All in all, Coelho has had a very interesting life and reading this book will give you a better understanding of the messages he conveys to his readers.
