And the story continues.......2007-04-22
Warning: Thar be spoilers ahead!
Remember each week those exciting words (which alerted us that we were about to get a new exciting episode of the best show on TV)? "Previously on BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER . . . " The new comic series seems to be doing something along these same lines. On the inside of the outer cover are printed the following:
"This story takes place after the end of BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER Season Seven.
"The Slayer population of the world has gone from two to nearly two thousand. Almost five hundred are working around the world with Buffy's organization in squads--or "terrorist cells," according to the American military. Buffy, Xander, Dawn, and a passel of Slayers are currently bunked out in a Scottish castle, where the latest mission revealed a strange symbol carved into human bodies.
"Also, Dawn's a giant."
This may be a summary that is rewritten each month to reflect what has happened in the previous issues.
The first episode in Season Eight established the situation; this one begins moving the story forward. The U.S. military (or rather, a military leader who has on his chest the strange symbol referred to in the monthly summary) has authorized Amy the witch and her army of zombies to go after Buffy and her cohorts. After the story begins with three very different approaches to training the new slayers by first Giles, then Buffy, and finally Andrew (who actually couldn't be said to be training them at all) we find Xander explaining why Dawn took the form of a giant when it was possible she could have assumed other forms instead (obviously, she is trying to get her sister's attention in the most blatant manner possible). The catch is, does Xander really tell any of this to Buffy or is it all just part of what we later learn is a spell-induced sleep in which she experiences an unbroken nightmare. And in a fairy-tale twist she can only be awakened by the kiss of true love. We can, of course, imagine a line of possible candidates for that: Angel and Spike fighting to be first in line. Well, of course Buffy will be awakened, and sooner rather than later. Can't imagine her being asleep at the end of the next episode. The tricky part is how one defines "true love." That needn't mean romantic love. My gut tells me that the kiss won't come from any of the usual suspects. My money is on Dawn. Yeah, I know. No one likes Dawn. But the brute fact is that except for struggling to save her in Season Five, Buffy has been a truly awful sister. Not in a Cinderella step sisterly way, but in the completely neglectful, can't-spare-her-a-minute way. But early in Season Six, Dawn seemed to miss her more than anyone. Like I said, my money is on Dawn.
The issues ends with Buffy asleep, the castle under assault by hundreds of zombies they can't keep at bay, Amy gloating that she could handle slayers with ease, so there was no one there who could take her on. The final frame is of someone who says that they would "like to test that theory." And thus Willow makes her first appearance in the story.
I am going to say something that I don't think I can say often enough. I don't want Joss Whedon writing comics. I want him creating new television shows. I suspect he enjoys the control that a comic gives him. I am sure he is tired of battling studios and networks. I can understand that. But once the battles have been waged and the BS has been waded through, Joss Whedon has been able to create some of the most extraordinary, most timeless television that has ever been made. He needs to get back to it. That being said, I am so much happier with him doing BUFFY Season Eight than either his X-Men project or the Runaways (and mind you, I like both the X-Men and the Runaways). There are others who can tell further stories about the X-Men and the Runaways, but Joss Whedon is only one who can give us authoritative Buffy stories. So I am acquiring these with joy and my heart and impatience in my soul. But I want him back in television. We've had some great TV since BUFFY and ANGEL left the air. LOST, 24, VERONICA MARS, and especially BATTLESTAR GALACTICA have filled the huge gap BUFFY left at its departure. But LOST needs to start winding down (whether it will has to be seen), BATTLESTAR GALACTICA (the only show to completely match the brilliance that was BUFFY) has possibly only one more season left and at most two before Ron Moore brings his series to an end. 24 is definitely in decline. VERONICA MARS might be cancelled. In short, JOSS! WE NEED YOU TO COME BACK TO TELEVISION! But in the meantime, I'll wolf down every one of these issues.
Episode Two: Attack of the Rat.......2007-04-05
Buffy fans will be expecting a lot after seven stellar seasons on television and the success of the first issue of "Season Eight." So the question here is this: Does Issue #2 deliver?
In short, yes. I have to say though--there is so much going on, so many jokes, and so much foreshadowing that I wasn't able to completely enjoy the Jossy goodness until my second read. The first read intrigued me, but the second wow-ed me.
The plot continues directly from the previous issue. Amy (the former rat) is working with the government to take out Buffy and the slayers, and she has an army of zombies to back her up. The ending sequences are amazing--I'm already itching for May 2nd to come so I can get my hands on the third issue. There was a big revelation about half-way through the comic, and clues to who the Big Bad of the season will be as well. Giant Dawn is great, Buffy is true to herself, and Xander is playing the biggest role he's played since the first season.
This issue also re-introduces two fan favorites: Giles and Andrew. So, all in all, this issue is just as good as the first. But did anybody expect anything less? I mean, come on--Joss Whedon wrote it.

Great Holiday Book!.......2007-08-06
Junie B. does it again...she makes us laugh during one of the most memorable holidays in a young child's life!! We see a soft side of Junie B. which rarely shows itself, but allows us to get to know her that much more AND teaches us a life lesson! My daughter and I loved reading this together!
Junie B - elf girl.......2007-07-14
Another story in the series by Park! Keeps you laughing - and will take you down memory lane as Junie B. gets ready for Christmas & will remind you of ALL those "fun" lyrics we made up to Christmas songs! She's still irrepressible & even though her language is "becoming more adult" there are still enough "Junie B.-isms" to keep you in stitches. If you're collecting the series, get going to the cash register!
So funny you will laugh at loud!.......2007-03-18
Barbara Park the author of this book and the entire Junie B. series has a writing style like no other. Her way of getting kids wanting to read through the real true to life stories of the kindergartener and first grader Junie B. Jones is fantastic. Barbara Park and her Junie B. books are consistently on the both the New York Times and the USA Today bestseller lists.
As of this date their are 26 books in the Junie B. series with the newest being Junie B. Dumb Bunny and this being the second newest. We have this book in the hard cover edition that has a paper cover sleeve and attached red satin ribbon bookmark for easily holding your current page. Santa left this in my then six year old's stocking the Christmas before last. It had just come out that previous month of 2005.
Junie B. Jones were the first chapter books that my daughter started reading. She was captivated by them as most kids this age are. They don't tell of a sticky sweet child but rather of the true to life hardships from the kid's view that a determined, opinionated, and sometimes frantic girl. She has some of the funniest moments in this book that my daughter and I burst out laughing at. Junie B. Likes to do things her own way and expects the world to pretty much revolve around her. Of course it doesn't and the trouble starts. In the end Junie B. learns a little bit anyway how to handle things.
In this book it Christmas time as the title suggests. The first grade classroom is getting ready for the holiday and the celebrations to come. They are learning and singing holiday songs and wearing elf costumes all of which are extremely exiciting to Junie B. As we have learned through previous books a classmate May is not exactly one of Junie B.'s favorite people. This time May has become a tattletale that is ruining the fun for Junie B. The part that stops Junie B. in her tracts and just may destroy this whole holiday season is that she draws May's name in the Secret Santa exchange that classroom number one is having. Junie B. comes up with a plan to get back May through the gift she plans on giving her. As usual things don't turn out as Junie B. has planned.
The books has 118 pages with 11 chapters. Their are usually about two illustrations per chapter. These are done in black and white print. The illustrator, Denise Brunkus perfectly captures the emotions of the fun and frustration of Junie B. But it's the cleverly written words that draw you in and make you feel like you can feel not only Junie B.'s joy but also her pain. She's is not quite the kid that you want your child to emulate but just the same a kid can learn from Junie B.'s problems that they are likely to encounter at some point in there grade school career.
Must have!
Hilarious and adorable!.......2007-01-10
My daughter is so in love with Junie B! When she opened this up and started reading, it was wonderful to hear the laughter it brought!!! If you want many laughs brought on by a child's perspective, get this book...too cute!!
Love All Junie B Books!.......2006-12-26
Love them! This one is so cute! We can't wait to get the new book in February.

What the *&!$%)?.......2007-01-20
I thoroughly enjoyed the first two books in this series, but this one kept me from going any further. While the first two had well-developed characters and entertaining moments, I did not recognize those heroes in this episode.
The plot started off intriguingly, but then quickly dissolved into an incomprehensible menagerie of images and reality-flipping. Here's a tank! Here's a cowboy! The story soon dissolved into silliness - I can't believe I spent the money on the hardcover. I read it thinking, "This is what the comic store kept wrapped up in plastic? Why?"
Most of Loeb's other stories I found to be excellent, especially the Hush stories - but this put a dent in my opinion of him as a writer. Save your money and invest it in something else. I already gave my copy away.
Planetary II. redux (6/10).......2006-12-05
How great could this have been if they had just stuck with the premise of a world with a despot Superman and Batman and how they destroyed the JLA. Instead we have a very promising first chapter and then a bunch of incoherent time travel with 4th rate DC characters. Clean it up. Why make a great premise more confusing. Planetary did in a few pages what this could not accomplish in an entire Graphic Novel.
Re-readability: 6/10
*I always put re-readability in my reviews for people who like to keep their TPB to re-read. Something can be awesome, but not something I am going to frequenty re-read (Maus), or it can be horrible, but I might still re-read it (JLA).*
Volume Three May Not Be The Charm..., But It's Still Good........2006-10-22
The bad news is that this is not as good as volumes one and two of the Superman/Batman series. There is a considerable dropoff here from what came before it.
The good news is that this is still a really good read. It's darker than the "Public Enemies" or "Supergirl" storylines due to the theme, but not drab or dreary by any means.
The chemistry between Clark and Bruce is still there in Loeb's writing. The premise here makes for some confusing moments, but nothing too weird.
The art is better than just good, though not outright great.
Overall, this is still better than most trade paperbacks out there by a long shot. Like volumes one and two, this is fun, fast-paced, and easy to read.
Much better than the first two!.......2006-10-11
Jeph Loeb is hit or miss for me. Usually, his stuff is either great or just competent. The competent stuff is good, but it's nothing that sticks with me days or even months later. It doesn't bounce around in my head like Watchmen or Return of the Dark Night or Runaways. It's just good.
The first two story arcs in this series were competent. Having Superman/Batman stories is a cool idea and the dueling narrative can be interesting. Sometimes it can be overly repetitive and even distracting from the rest of the story. But sometimes it's dead on. The first story arc, Public Enemies, was solid. Fun at times, a little contrived at others. A good superhero story. The second story arc, Supergirl, was better. I can't tell if that's because of Turner's artwork (God can that boy draw women) or Superman's whole off-balance and anger that made this a better story arc. Maybe both.
But the third story arc, Absolute Power, was the best of them all. To see Batman and Superman as duel-rulers of the world was very cool. Taking down fellow heroes, even cooler. I really liked how when things went to hell, the changes in timeline made things even better! And then we get to Batman and his parents... that was great!
This was a well-done story arc and a collection that has been sticking around with me for the past couple of days. I like the idea of a hero who knows the love of his parents when he's 20 even though they were murdered in front of him when he was 10. I think that it makes for very interesting characters. And this collection made for a very great read!
A Superman/Batman book oughtta have superman and batman in it..........2006-08-30
The reason I've read the other books in this series is because I enjoy the interplay of Batman and Superman, two very different characters. THIS enstalment, however, does not star Batman and Superman, but two brainwashed guys wearing their costumes. Reading this I kept thinking, "Man, Batman and Superman are jerks."
I don't want to read about super-powered jerks. I want Superman and Batman.

Graphic SF Reader.......2007-09-25
What had been an entertaining and really quite good series now starts to go downhill with the introduction of this alternate reality romp and changing of things as a version of the Legion of Super Villains tries to turn Superman and Batman into a version of the Crime Syndicate crossed with Mark Waid's Empire.
Doesn't work all that well, except for a bit of cross-genre artist work.
Brutal.......2007-08-19
I found the storyline ridiculous. Hard for me to finish this one. I liked Volume 2 better.
A good beginning but a bad end.......2007-08-14
Like the title, the book begins really interesting, but then appear a lot of stupid characters and they doesn't explain in an scientific way, the book is sort of dissapointing, the only good thing is that the drawing is great.
Just the way they would really be........2007-07-09
A long time fan of Batman (from the days of the original 80 page giants)I never really cared for his portrayal when accompanied by Superman. DC has finally gotten them together in a realistic way. The art is wonderful and the storyline is a fine arc that eventually takes us all into the crossover mania of Identity Crisis (which I did like). This is not always accessible for little kids, but nothing to shy away from if you've got 'em.
Very enjoyable and a good example of why DC is the best.
Superman/Batman vol 3.......2007-03-31
As far as the series of four books for Superman/Batman goes this is the weakest link. Because it is a series you need all four of them. This one (volume 3) is a read once and place on the shelf book.

Chandleresque, Gritty, and Beautifully Bleak.......2007-01-21
This series is so wonderfully bleak its almost uplifting. I like the idea of a side-bar story of everyone else in Gotham, and I thought I would miss the long underwear guy, but actually I got caught up in all the noir atmosphere. The 'look' of the book echoes the recent Daredevil, in that grey area between real and unreal, without being cartoony (good for some things, like the new Ghost Rider #6) and helps sell the 'everydayness' of the narrative.
Surprisngly gripping and absorbing.

Batman Volumes 2 &3 Neal Adams.......2007-09-27
I have all three volumes of these sensational collectibles and I have to say this was "The Batman" not only as I remember him but the definitive Batman as he should be both artistically ( he looks like an athlete not a steroid pumped jock! No offense Jim Lee fans...but Neal Adams is the master! )and the character and stories themselves are barnone so timeless that it seems every writer for the character since Mr. Oneil refers to those incredible stories in some form or another. I am a firm believer in progressive or evolving a character but this time period of the Batman is untouchable!
Batman Illustrated by Neal Adams: Volume 3 (Batman).......2007-02-17
A great third book with a lot of covers thrown in. Neal Adams is the expert Batman Artist and it's great to get these stories collected in one bound edition. Also includes sketches at the back of the book and a brief synopsis on Neal and the people who worked with him. My only negative about this book is that (as in the previous two books), they recolored the stories instead of leaving them in their original form. I think it takes away from the authenticity of the work, but it's still a great purchase if you're a Batman fan, or a Neal Adams fan.
Poor (altered from orig) coloring is the *only* reason I'm grading this low!.......2007-02-04
I'm a huge fan of the 70's batman, Neal Adams' art, any kid of Ras story, so of course I was excited to pick this up. I usually like to thumb through a copy before ordering, but I imagine because of the cover price these were all sealed. I'd heard complaints about "retouched" inking on these Neal Adams volumes before, and chocked it up to people being too nit-picky. Well, I ordered the book, got in the mail, and ripped it out... then my heart sank. While I can't say that the re-touching of the art is bad per se, it totally took me out of the 70's comic feel, and actually ruined the book for me. I couldn't finish the first story, and thumbed through the rest of the book to see if it was all like this. Except for the black and white sketches, it was. I normally rate very high, but I wish I would have heeded the warnings about the re-touched art. Let me be clear that the stories, binding, paper-quality, and extras (intros by Denny O'Neil and Neal Adams, plus some of Adams' commercial Batman work) were all top notch--but the colors were so at odds with Adams pencils that I feel like I've completely wasted my money. If you're thinking about getting this, head over to brick-and-mortar bookstore first to thumb through it. If the art isn't totally off-putting to you, then there are some great stories in here that you'll really enjoy.
The Timeless Standard for Batman.......2006-11-11
This third volume collects the last portion of the Neal Adams Batman. While the second volume is in and of itself excellent, this volume is indeed superior. Phenomenal writing, superb coloring, quality paper, and timeless art.
Present-day comic "artists" still have miles to go before they reach this type of comic storytelling.
You get:
"Daughter of the Demon": (R'as al Ghul)
"Half an Evil" (Two Face)
"Night of the Reaper" (Harlon Ellison assist)
"The Lazarus Pit" (R'as al Ghul)
"The Demon Lives Again" (R'as al Ghul)
"The Bruce Wayne Murder Case"
"The Joker's Five Way Revenge" (Joker)
"Moon of the Wolf"
My only complaint is the re-inking of two Power Record Books that were excellent the way they originally were.
Still, a volume to be read, re-read, and treasured.

Great, funny book!.......2007-02-01
Buy this book for all the Batman lovers in your life. It's just plain funny! The Joker blasts his way out of the asylum and again, tries to plat a sinister plan and get rid of Batman. Of course, his ploys do not work but how they go about it is quite funny. My little guy just loves this book, plus it encourages his reading time. Great stuff, hope there are more of these!!

loved it.......2007-05-16
My four year old son loves this book. Its a chapter book, so a little old for him, but its his first Batman book and he loves it. My 6 year old daughter enjoys it, too, because Catwoman is in it. So I can read it to both of them!
Perfect for young readers.......2005-10-01
This book is a perfect combination of classic Batman illustrations with easy to read text. My 5-yr old son begs me to read it to him and can read a little from the text himself. We like that it has 4 different, fun stories, each about one of The Dark Knight's traditional villains. My son likes the Catwoman story best - especially the passage where Batman announces over the police radio: "this is Batman! A police car has been stolen!" It is a quality product, well-bound hard cover.
