Book Description

Previously available only through free distribution to prisons, this life-changing book is the result of charitable donations from sales of Chicken Soup for the Christian Family Soul and gifts from thousands of individuals. In the spring of 2000, over 100,000 copies of Chicken Soup for the Prisoner's Soul were distributed to prisoners, prison libraries and prison ministries throughout the United States. The hope was that this collection of stories would touch the hearts of prisoners and offer them hope and encouragement, as well as inspire them to transcend the limiting thinking and behaviors of their past. The book was so successful that the co-authors soon found themselves flooded with requests for the book from family members, correctional officers, prison volunteers and others. Because of this huge demand, the decision was made to also release the book to the general public.

This book has really touched my loved one who is incarcerated. He has really enjoyed it and stated that the stories really give the extra step he needs sometimes.

I sent this book to my son who is incarcerated. He has read over half the book so far. He said the book is great. That it really gives him something to think about. He says the book should be manatory reading for everybody who is in a jail. He thinks the officers in charge of the prisoners should read it also, then maybe the harassment would stop.

Great recreational read! I sent it to my husband! I cried through some stories and smiled through others, just as I have with any other Chicken Soup book!

5 out of 5 stars Extremely Pleased and Thankful!.......2005-10-27

I personally did not read this book, however, I sent it to my 27 year old son who at the time was incarcerated as a result of a mix up with stolen identity (his ID having been stolen and used for criminal activities). It was an extremely difficult & spiritually frustrating time for him! This book made a tremendous difference and impact on his decision to rededicate his life to the Lord and allowing Him (Jesus Christ and God our Father) to "help" my son. My son derived much strength from the life stories of others, such as Chuck Colson, as well as all those that contributed their personal stories, in knowing that God is still on the thrown and has not forgotten those in the judicial prision/jail systems and that they are loved as much as those on the outside. My son said I could not have sent him a greater gift at the time. He also has shared it with many of the inmates who were interested in knowing how much the Lord loves them REGARDLESS of their circumstances, what we have done in life, as well as what we have not done in life to please the Lord. It helped many men and I am very grateful for the book and how quickly it was shipped!! That was a very important aspect as well since my son was in such a state of depression and needed some inspiration, hope, guidance and just plain down to earth stories about life in this difficult world. It helped him to keep on keeping on and having faith that God has a purpose for everything. Life catches us by surprise most of the time, however, it never catches the Lord by surprise. My son needed to know that it rains on the just and the unjust in this world, and it shines on the just and the unjust in this world (taken from the Bible). God is no respector of persons and this book clearly reveals that, but, he is a God of LOVE and he loves all his creations, including those that don't necessarily need a "hand out" but a "hand up" which are usually those incarcerated. Not all in the prison system want a get out of jail free. They just want justice done and this book allowed them, through the stories of those individual lives to know there is a "just God" in this world. Thanks for allowing me this opportunity to share my opinion/review and I hope it will benefit anyone interested in possibly purchasing this book!

I FOUND THIS BOOK ON AMAZON AFTER JUST BROWSING AROUND. MY SON IS IN PRISON IN UPSTATE NEW YORK AND I SENT HIM A COPY. HE TOLD ME HE GOT THE BOOK BUT NEVER MENTIONED ANYTHING ELSE. WELL THE OTHER DAY HE CALLED AND SAID "OH BY THE WAY YOU KNOW THAT BOOK THAT YOU SENT ME A FEW MONTHS AGO CHICKEN SOUP FOR THE PRISONERS SOUL WELL ITS THE BEST BOOK I EVER EVER READ". IT IS SO INSPIRATIONAL AND HE SAID IT HELPS HIM THROUGH SOME DEPRESSING TIMES. HE HAS PASSED IT AROUND HIS PRISION DORM AND EVERY ONE TELLS HIM HOW THEY LOVED THE BOOK. HE EVEN GOT INSPIRED TO WRITE POEMS AND SEND IT IN TO THE AUTHOR WHO TAKES POEMS AND STORIES FROM PRISIONERS AROUND THE COUNTRY. HE AS WELL AS I HAVE READ THE SAME STORIES OVER AND OVER AND NEVER GET TIRED OF READING THEM.

Book Description

These inspiring and true stories reveal the restorative benevolence that is alive and well behind prison walls. Whether through a helping hand from another inmate, a gesture of kindness from a prison volunteer, or caring treatment and respect from a correctional officer, counselor, chaplain or other staff person, you will be uplifted as you read about amazing people who have performed humane acts in inhumane surroundings.

Serving Time, Serving Others is for those who have ever spent time behind bars; who have ever had a loved-one imprisoned; who work or volunteer in a correctional facility; who have ever been a victim of crime; and, who understand that we all share the responsibility of helping others—no matter who they are, where they live, or what they've done.

Each heartfelt story captures the essence of genuine kindness and illustrates that even the darkest pits of despair and hopelessness can be illuminated by just one good deed. Genuine kindheartedness has the miraculous power to heal, transform and inspire—even those behind bars. It can also foster forgiveness and a desire to change.

Some stories will help you in your personal growth and spiritual awareness. Others will help you appreciate your freedom. Still others will remind us that we all make mistakes. And some will reaffirm the fact that, although many of us may be imprisoned in some way (either by a limiting belief, addiction, illness, habit or other circumstance), we all need a helping hand, at some point in our lives, to lift us up out of the depths of despair.

Serving Time, Serving Others will leave you with a renewed appreciation of the restorative power of kindness and the resilience of the human spirit—whether or not you live or work behind the razor wire.

So many families are touched in one way or another by the correctons system, this little gem of a book is flying off the shelves and into eager hands.

A Beautiful Book

"I loved `Serving Time, Serving Others.' It made me smile and cry at once. Thanks to Laura and Tom Lagana for producing this beautiful work. What an inspiration to read. I am the mother of a son serving life in High Desert State Prison. He was arrested a week after he turned 21 and is 28 now. After entering the nightmare of prison life, I didn't know people like those written about in this book existed. I really and truly needed to read this book. I can't wait to send it to my son.

5 out of 5 stars Serving Time, Serving Others.......2004-03-08

Serving Time, Serving Others is a heartwarming compilation of stories centered on the prison system. The stories are authored by inmates, volunteers and prison staff, and all of the stories will cause you to reevaluate any preconceived thoughts you may have on the prison system. The book will make you less judgmental and more judicious. Several stories, all of which were written by inmates, touched my heart as I read this book.
A Ten-Cent Pen by Matt Matteo: This story succinctly shows how an inmate can grow within the walls of his imprisonment.
An Unexpected Favor by William Ryan: An ex-inmate reveals the changes his incarceration wrought in small ways upon his life, exchanging the high with drugs for the high of helping others.
My Friend Sarama by George Toth: An inmate's view of how quickly we all judge others after the September 11th tragedy
The Angel Tree by Terrell L. Thomas: The real victims of an inmate's mistake are his own family, yet the compassion of volunteers renews his faith.
Hungry for Freedom by Shannon Grillo: All the things we take for granted by being free are emphasized by an inmate's brief thoughts of escape and realization that to heal her soul, she must pay her debt to society.

I recommend this book be read by anyone who works in a prison, who has a loved one incarcerated, or who may be in prison themselves. The stories will ease some positive into what may seem to be only a negative situation. This book will give you hope.

4 out of 5 stars The Urban Book Source.......2007-08-13

Turning the horrors of prison life into a well written tale, Seth Ferranti has provided us with a gritty inside peak of what life behind bars is really like. Minus the Hollywood cast, Prison Stories, gives us an Oz like feel, with a more in depth understanding of what actually goes on in the warped world of prison. Far from your average "man goes to jail and redeems himself" story, Prison Stories offers up a regurgitated account of what happens in prisons across America, without the fairy-tale endings which accompany many books of this sort.

With the day to day monotony, Seth, puts on exhibit the struggles inmates face to stay true while remaining out of trouble. From his chronicles of boredom to his play-by-play detail of shank-filled drama, Mr. Ferranti leaves no stone unturned in his narrative.

Following a young white boy who got wrapped up in the system for a drug charge, Prison Stories takes you into the pits of hell and back. From his first day on the block, to his assimilation into prison life, Seth gives you an unmatched sense of realism, of the cards prisoners are dealt from the moment they step foot into the cage. With characters that could be from anyone's neighborhoods, to the Spanish slag, Seth makes sure everyone has someone they can relate to.

Read only if you are prepared to be force fed some of the most real and direct details of what life behind walls is really like.

2 out of 5 stars Uneventful..........2007-08-08

I've not seen HBO's "OZ" or Fox's "Brison Break" but I figured I read this book, why? I was going though Philadelphia Internation Airport and I expected at least 2 hrs worth or delays (I was correct). Anyway, after reading about half the book in the airport and the other half after I landed I felt the book was unimpressive. Nothing really happens to Guero. Also, it is a little hard to follow becuase it does jump from Enlish, to spanish, to slang, and back. Also, it has intermissions from the main story to give little short stories of events that may occur or have occured in prison life. The intermissions would be more useful if the main story acually have a rise, climax, and reselution, it had neither. I undersatnd the point was to show "day-to-day" life in prison but damn, you would expect the author to take the liberty of haveing something happen except his friend being release, his other friend evenually being release, yet another one of his friends eventually being release, and one of his hommie's turning into a snitch. And alot of getting high! Thats about it, it was rather uneventful. Well, thats just my two cents...

4 out of 5 stars A Hard Man Shatters But a Strong Man Endures.......2007-05-10

Ever wonder what prison life is really like? Seth "Soul Man" Ferranti takes readers to the belly of the beast with his raw, uncut narration of PRISON STORIES. PRISON STORIES, based on an insider's view, tells the story of young Guero, a suburban white drug dealer learning the ropes, politics and keys to survival in the federal prison system. With jewels of wisdom from friends and fellow inmates, examples of cellmates, and his own experiences, Guero quickly learns the dos and don'ts. "You can't be selling wolf tickets in the pen, unless you want six inches of steel in your gut." As the months roll into years, will Guero allow the life behind bars to dictate his future beyond the bars?

Seth's storytelling is both enjoyable and insightful. Narration was effectively alternated between main character Guero and anecdotes; anecdotes that cover everything from snitches to shakedowns, drugs to gumps, sneak thieves to paperwork parties. "Catfish" was my favorite. Told this way, it allowed readers not only in on Guero's particular situation and life through his eyes, but also the many characters and events that go down all day everyday in the prison system. Although Seth does a good job acclimating readers to this environment, there were times I didn't have complete understanding. Translating conversations and slang from Spanish to English would have been helpful.
Overall, PRISON STORIES is a promising debut and I look forward to more.

As a former federal prisoner, now professor of criminal justice, I know a little about federal prisons. I have also known Seth Ferranti for a number of years, corresponding by mail. Prison Stories is a fast paced good read written from the heart. Ferranti tells stories about people in prison, how they live and die, how they do time and survive day to day. His book demonstrates that we now have over 2 million people in jail and prison, most of them victims of a senseless drug war that has now raged over 25 years. Meanwhile, Seth sits in prison, while his mom and wife wait for his return home. I look forward to the day when this talented author is free.

5 out of 5 stars fantastic book.......2006-03-16

This is an absolutly fantastic book. I havent been able to put it down since I bought it. Seth writes about prison and the terrible life that it turns people onto. He illustrates the horrors of living in prison and how it can even turn convict's into more ruthless people. The imagery that Seth portrays in his book paints a horrible picture of prison, a place no human should ever have to endure and the hardships he must go through on a daily basis in order to survive. I highly recomend this book to anyone, a great story and a masterfully written.

Book Description

James Hirsch recounts one of the great friendships of the twentieth century forged in one of the most horrific settings that century produced--a North Vietnamese POW camp its inmates called the Zoo. One prisoner, Fred Cherry, was a pioneering air force pilot and the first black officer captured by the North Vietnamese. The other, a young navy flier named Porter Halyburton, was a racist southerner who doubted that a black man could even be a pilot. Their captors threw them into the same fetid cell, believing that their antipathy toward each other would break them both. But Cherry and Halyburton overcame their initial suspicions and saved each other's lives. When Halyburton first saw him, Cherry was a wreck. One arm, damaged in his plane crash, hung uselessly at his side. He hadn't bathed in weeks, and he could barely walk. In his own mind, Cherry was steeling himself for death. Halyburton was also weakening, emotionally battered from the interrogations and isolation that his sheltered life had not prepared him for. He had to learn how to endure, or he would become one of the incoherent wraiths who haunted the Zoo. Halyburton and Cherry became legendary among fellow POWs for the singular friendship that enabled them to overcome prodigious suffering and unspeakable torture. Hirsch weaves through this account a surprising, sometimes shocking view of the toll these men's captivity took on their loved ones. While Cherry's family was sundered by his absence, Halyburton's bond with his wife, Marty, endured and deepened. We see her receive the news of her husband's death, and we share her mingled elation and fear when she later learns that he is in fact alive and imprisoned. We also witness her unlikely rise to a leading role in the battle to bring the POWs home. Often inspiring, sometimes heartbreaking, Two Souls Indivisible shows how trust and hope can cheat death, and how good people can achieve greatness in hellish circumstances.

5 out of 5 stars A "Thanks"giving Day Well Spent.......2006-11-26

I spent the Thanksgiving 2006 Holiday wrapped up in a book that clearly made me appreciate how fortunate we truly are!!! Two Souls Indivisible is one the best written novels I have ever read. James Hirsh is an outstanding writer and does a superb job not only with the development of the two main characters but also captures the torment and hell all of our POW's went thru -- notwithstanding the race relations aspect which is also described in much detail and serves as the underderlying theme. Whether you are a history buff and someone who is looking for a superb book -- this is it. Some of the details are graphic but it is truly necessary so that the reader appreciates the chaos and sheer brutality that these men were faced with. Five stars doesn't do justice -- make it 10 out of 10.

5 out of 5 stars Compelling story of friendship and survival.......2005-04-26

Hirsch recounts the friendship that developed between two aviators who were shot down in North Vietnam and endured seven years of imprisonment and torture. Fred Cherry was the first black pilot captured by the Vietnamese, a hot fighter jock and a pioneer in integrating the Air Force. Porter Halyburton was a southern gentleman, steeped in the racial relationships of the old South. Cherry was a Major with combat tours in Korea; Halyburton a young Lieutenant j.g. Although they spent only seven months in the same cell, each credits the other with saving his life as their captors slowly bled the will to live from them. The author also recounts the travails of the two wives, of whom one became a leader in the POW movement and the other declared her husband dead and refused to accept his return. The author skillfully avoids both treacly sentimentalism and excessive gore and concentrates on the leadership and mutual support that kept the survivors alive through years of isolation, abuse, and starvation. Certainly worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars From A Family Member.......2004-12-28

I read this book on the advise of a cousin in Montana. And when I finished, I remembered sitting with my mother and crying as we saw Uncle Fred's name on the list of released POW's. I was in my junior year in college at the time. I have kept an article from Jet Magazine of an interview that he gave just after he was released. Much of what he said in that article is in this book; just fleshed out to the full, long, seven years. I knew some of it then; I know a lot more now. I am very proud that this book was written about these two men, my Uncle and Mr. Halyburton. They are living history. And Mr. Hirsch does a wonderful job of presenting them as just that-real history-real people.

5 out of 5 stars Absolutely Awesome.......2004-08-06

I read this book expecting a lot of "war" data. But what I received was far beyond what I expected. It was fantastic. It did just what it set out to do, which was capture the comradry and the "Two Souls Indivisible" and their plights together. I have the pleasure of knowing Fred Cherry and he is a wonderful man. After reading the book, I have another level of respect for him and what he has accomplished.

4 out of 5 stars Torture and POWs.......2004-07-07

James Hirsch has written an inspirational account of two American POWs, Fred Cherry, an African-American fighter-bomber pilot, and Porter Halyburton, a southern white jet navigator. Both were shot down flying missions over North Vietnam and spent seven-plus years in prison camps. The author weaves considerable biographical material on the two servicemen into descriptions of their capture, interrogations, torture and harsh prison conditions. The book draws on extensive interviews with the two flyers, their families, fellow POWs, other military colleagues and close friends.

The narrative depicts how POWs struggled to maintain dignity, sense of honor to the U.S. military and mutual support in the face of cruel treatment by North Vietnamese captors. This reader has for years wondered what POWs endured while imprisoned. No longer, for this book presents graphic descriptions of horrible prison conditions and physical and psychological torture. Anyone with strong views on the Vietnam War, pro or con, would find this book engaging.

The discussions of Vietnamese torture and abuse of American servicemen make distressing reading in light of revelations about U.S. mistreatment of prisoners in Iraq, Afghanistan and Guantánamo and the legal justifications for it offered by some U.S. government officials. At times the Vietnamese denied POW status to captured Americans. When Major Cherry refused to answer questions in his first interrogation and showed his Geneva Convention card outlining his rights as a prisoner, his Vietnamese interrogator barked, "Forget about it. You're a criminal." (p.33)

People have tortured each other for thousands of years. Sometimes torturers sought military advantage; other times, enforcement of religious beliefs; or they simply needed to dominate. Gravensteen Castle's torture museum (Ghent, Belgium) contains an array of medieval Europe's crueler torture instruments, a sober reminder of how deeply ingrained human cruelty is.

This long history of torture might easily engender cynicism about the Geneva Conventions or any other rules attempting to restrain human cruelty. The drafters of the U.S. Constitution, however, displayed optimism, banning "cruel and unusual punishment."

According to Hirsch, U.S. POWs evinced similar optimism. Major Cherry recounts his relief that a uniformed Vietnamese was in charge of his capture, for "he assumed that a soldier, even a Communist, was more likely to respect a prisoner of war. According to the Geneva Conventions of 1949 - which North Vietnam had signed - POWs were to be treated humanely." (p.30) Halyburton's wife, a POW activist, optimistically declared: "All we ask is that North Vietnam adhere to the conditions of the Geneva Conventions, that they identify the prisoners they hold, and they protect them from abuse. That's all we ask." (p.210)

Hirsch cautiously avoids raising any "coulda shoulda wouldas" of the Vietnam War. That's not his story. Yet, the narrative makes clear that support for the Vietnam War was an important psychological need of the POWs and many other combatants. How else to make it through still another day of torture or fighting thousands of miles from home? That psychological need, however, can hardly become the justification for any war. The U.S. political system demands extreme prudence of its leadership when engaging troops and a thorough debate of the issues. Hirsch's book poignantly reminds readers how U.S. troops ultimately bear the consequences of war-making decisions.

The issue of race figures prominently in the book. Porter Halyburton, a southern white officer, must confront the views he absorbed from a racially segregated society when he cares for Major Fred Cherry, an African-American POW and his cellmate. Major Cherry, in turn, must bury years of racial insults and slights. The account of how both men ultimately bridge this racial divide is truly a message of hope.

This reader winced, however, at the description of Halyburton's overcoming his segregationist upbringing as being the moment when "Cherry had ceased being black." (p.133) It's not clear if this is Halyburton's or Hirsch's expression. Perhaps the words didn't come out right. Still, it would have been more satisfying in this reader's mind to hear Halyburton exclaim that he, Halyburton, had ceased being white.

Book Description

I met this exceptional man, Aaron Vandenberg, in a concentration camp in the former Dutch East Indies. We suffered starvation, illness, beatings and torture. My father was tormented from a rare skin disease. I tried to care for my dad while also having to do hard labor for the Japanese occupiers. Aaron, though vilified by others, was an exceptionally caring and loving person who sacrificed his life to save some one else's. When I talk about this extraordinary man, my voice trembles and my eyes fill with tears, even though he died more than sixty years ago when I was 15. Aaron has defined my character and morals for the rest of my life. The book not only tells about the deplorable conditions under which we had to live, but more importantly about the human behavior of my concentration camp comrades; some rising to unequaled levels of compassion and love, others to the lowest levels of greed and corruption, often by people from whom one would least expect it. It is an account of a part of history that is not taught in schools, an account from a survivor of a brutal and nearly forgotten episode of World War II: the Japanese occupation of the Dutch East Indies and imprisonment of hundreds of thousands of its people. This 3 1/2 year occupation was immediately followed by a bloody revolution and the creation of modern Indonesia. It is a deeply moving story of a young boy who was born in the colonial Netherlands Indies and spent more than three years as a captive of the Japanese. It gives the English-speaking reader a glimpse of what has been called the "Other Holocaust", the brutalities of the Pacific War. The story ends with a poor but hopeful immigrant arriving in the US and how he built a successful life as an entrepreneur and family man.

From my mother Joan, 77: "I finished reading the book and believe me, I was overwhelmed by it. It brought back so many memories - I used to wonder if the government made some of it up, but they could not do justice to the story as this book does. I am so glad it was published. I hope someone makes it into a movie. The author's bonding with Aaron van den Berg was so touching - I had tears in my eyes. It is a wonderful and informative book."

5 out of 5 stars A little known perspective of WWII.......2007-02-20

When the book arrived, I opened it immediately and
read for a straight eight hours ----- cover-to-cover
nonstop. To me it was a "page turner", and with a
reading glass to boot ---
I think Pieter has created a masterpiece ------ he
tells a story that, as far as my past reading on WWII
goes, has not been told before. I have only known
Pieter professionally. I had no idea how much he
suffered in his youth. Clearly it made his soul
stronger ----- the title is well chosen".

5 out of 5 stars BEST BOOK EVER!.......2006-08-25

Never has a book reached me as Prison of Souls. I don't think I will ever come upon a book series as good as the Bard's Tale or a character as amazing as Naitachal. Not even Harry Potter! I can't get the characters or the adventure I've been through out of my head, it's like I was there experiencing everything. I can't put it into words how this series has done to me. I thought the second book was the best, but this has to be the best book in the series. A good ending, well written, nothing out of place. Good characters you care about. Well done to the authors! I'm having withdrawls after reading it! The ending is SUPERB! Every moment reading this book I could see it clearly, could feel every emotion. Don't pass up this book series! Worth the money and the read! Good news is there is another book out there with Naitachal. A book part of the series titled The Chaos Gate.

3 out of 5 stars too many people writting this book.......2000-07-19

If you can get past the inconsistancies in the book(such as the dark Elf's Grandfather suddenly being refered to as his Father)or the writting which at one point is very shallow as if the author is rushing to finish, then at another point more detailed like most of Misty's writting, the story line is very delightful. It almost seems as if there were several writters on this book and none of them bothered to read each others work.

4 out of 5 stars Nice to read. (^_^).......2000-03-14

Nice storyline, and you don't really need to read the other books in The Bard's Tale to understand this one. Good for light reading.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent fantasy, including magic, plots, and friendship.......1998-12-04

This book encompassed the ideal aspects of a fantasy; it was not too simple, but not too complex; it was not too concentrated on battle and whatnot, but not too focused on characters. Recomended light reading. However, one outstanding question remains for the author: Is Alair Shay'a'chern?

Book Description

In the mid 1980s, Bob Roberts was a successful dentist, stunt flyer and racecar driver. While undergoing marital counseling he was fascinated by the psychological process and pursued his own doctorate in psychology.

Intrigued by the community-building work of M. Scott Peck, Roberts' doctorate research consisted of applying and testing Peck's community-building model in an environment where it seemed only a distant possibility-the prison system. It was there, in Louisiana's Dixon Correctional Institution, where Roberts' life was forever transformed, as would the lives of hundreds of inmates and former offenders. What started as a literacy program evolved into sessions of shared soul searching, group therapy and a celebration of the prisoners' roots.

Although prison officials sabotaged his project, Roberts went on to found Project Return, the most successful aftercare program for former offenders in the country. Aimed at breaking the cycles of addiction, crime and violence, Project Return is the only prisoner rehabilitation program in the country funded by the U.S. Department of Justice.

This memoir is Roberts' adventure into his heart and his conscience. It explores the darkest terrain of violence and human suffering, and the brightest terrain of redemption, human dignity and hope. It will leave readers deeply inspired, encouraged and impassioned-in awe of the human capacity to survive and recover from cruelty and hardship.

I recently had the privilege to attended a workshop with Robert. The experience left me with a desire to know more about him and his work. I purchased his book and could not put it down. Robert's personal journey to follow his calling and heartfelt relationships are inspiring. This book allowed me to look deep inside myself, explore my biases and feelings about humanity in general. This book is a must read and will change the way you view our prison system.

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring is an understatement..........2006-09-08

When I first participated in one of Bob's community building workshops I left wondering what potential the process held in other situations. It all makes sense after reading this book. A simple idea -- be vulnerable and take ownership of your opinions and your past, don't judge, listen intensely, and don't be afraid to grieve for your past failures, sufferings and pain ... and those of others. This process has changed the lives of so many individuals that the rest of society has given up on too easily. You won't look at innmates and former convicts the same. You hopefully won't look at yourself the same either. Read it and it will open your eyes and heart. Thank you Bob!

I found this book by accident when i was searching for more infos about life in Americas prisons. I got this book with the intention to read sometimes a few pages because my time is very limited . it turned out that I had to run to work for to be not too late because always when I spent my time with this book I forgot everything else around me.
That's just how interesting this book is. Fascinating to me was the fact that with each page I read, I found my own thoughts or a proof of the things I already knew .
I spent the last 6 years with communicating with prisoners in America. Often it is hard to believe what's going on in these places. Some people may find it hard to believe what Mr Roberts has to tell within this book but I can assure everybody that everything you read is true and based on real life .
Mr Roberts changed his whole life for to bring some changes to a few people .I hope everyone who reads this book gets an idea of how serious the criminal and justice problem in America really is and starts to help to make a change
PS: For everyone from Germany , you can order the book by amazon.de.

5 out of 5 stars A human take on a complex subject.......2004-11-25

Heartbreaking in its simplicity and insight, Dr. Robert's journey is one every tax-paying American should take. From his personal committment, establishment of Project Return which pushed his career in radically different directions, to his work with indiginous populations, Dr Roberts casts himself as very much the student. This is a position very few 'civilians' have experienced. I know. I'm just finishing my 30th year in law enforcement.. This is must reading for professionals and citizens alike. You will finish this book as a changed person.

5 out of 5 stars An inspiring journey for all to take.......2004-01-09

A moving account of one man's search for a path to truth, a path by the following of which society as a whole can benefit. While this book is subtitled: An Unlikely Journey Behind the Walls of Justice, it is so much wider in its applicability than to the insitutions wherein it was born. In his exploration of 'community building', Mr. Roberts has written a remarkable prescription for society as a whole to adopt and apply to heal the profound wounds caused by the segregation of its members into disparate islands of fear, hurt, and hate. As for the application of this process to both the incarcerated and returned prison population itself, truly remarkable results have resulted from so doing. Mr. Roberts has addressed a core concern: "Without proper support, however, transformation is a long hard road. Because most of (the incarerated) are unprepared, most of them fail [become recidivists upon being paroled or pardoned]." Robert's combination of community building and techniques developed from his insights into the human social condition garnered while studying prisoners directly should be seriously examined by all states concernd with reformation of those who offend its rules. The results from so doing offer a path to real freedom, the transformation of a person rather than the brutalizing perpetuation of antisocial behavior consequent from incarceration as it is currently administered. Finally, this is a remarkable and inspiring read.

Product Description

History: Fiction or Science? is the most explosive tractate on history ever written - however, every theory it contains, no matter how unorthodox, is backed by solid scientific data. The book is well-illustrated, contains over 446 graphs and illustrations, copies of ancient manuscripts, and countless facts attesting to the falsity of the chronology used nowadays, which never cease to amaze the reader. Eminent mathematician proves that: Jesus Christ was born in 1153 and crucified in 1186 The Old Testament refers to mediaeval events. Apocalypse was written after 1486. Does this sound uncanny? This version of events is substantiated by hard facts and logic - validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources - to a greater extent than everything you may have read and heard about history before. The dominating historical discourse in its current state was essentially crafted in the XVI century from a rather contradictory jumble of sources such as innumerable copies of ancient Latin and Greek manuscripts whose originals had vanished in the Dark Ages and the allegedly irrefutable proof offered by late mediaeval astronomers, resting upon the power of ecclesial authorities. Nearly all of its components are blatantly untrue! For some of us, it shall possibly be quite disturbing to see the magnificent edifice of classical history to turn into an ominous simulacrum brooding over the snake pit of mediaeval politics. Twice so, in fact: the first seeing the legendary millenarian dust on the ancient marble turn into a mere layer of dirt - one that meticulous unprejudiced research can eventually remove. The second, and greater, attack of unease comes with the awareness of just how many areas of human knowledge still trust the three elephants of the consensual chronology to support them. Nothing can remedy that except for an individual chronological revolution happening in the minds of a large enough number of people.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

The journey of the Konstantinov continues. The collected edition of the first volume of The Red Star ended as the two massive SkyFurnaces Konstantinov and Taktarov were locked in battle, entering the Prison of Souls. The newest volume continues the chronicle of their struggle. Imbohl, the evil ruler/sorcerer, has discovered a way to draw energy from the souls of the recently departed. While he has promised a utopian ideal to his citizens, certain few are beginning to wake up to the grim reality of their situation. The crew of the Konstantinov is locked in a fight that will bring them freedom or death. Maya Antares, the Spellkaster, is discovering that she her powers grant her a deeper connection to the tortured souls of the spirit world. But the main focus is battle, and it comes non stop, fast, and furious. It's high noon in the skies, but instead of pistols, the battle involves weapons that can destroy cities and kill thousands in one blast. This volume closes with more questions than answers.

With the increased battle action, the story now focuses less on the personal and more on the political. The world of The Red Star closely mirrors the politics of ours. Interestingly, even the U.S. is involved in the conspiracy. Every major government draws power from the spirit world. The world's economy will collapse without this posthumous slave system. The Konstantinov has a hell of a fight before them, one that any reader hopes they will win. But we're in no rush when the story is this good.
