Book Description

"I am the happiest man in the world because God entrusted me with this mission."

In John of God: The Brazilian Healer Who's Touched the Lives of Millions, a seemingly average rancher from Abadiânia, Brazil, offers a powerful message of love, compassion, and hope for humanity. João Teixeira de Faria, the healer and medium known as John of God, allows "spirit doctors" to take over his body three times a week to miraculously treat the thousands of people from all over the world who come in need of remedy.

John of God has fulfilled his mission as a medium for more than forty-eight years, making numerous pilgrimages around the world. Drawn by the hope of instantaneous healing, over eight million believers have proceeded in front of him throughout his life, as tens of thousands journey to Brazil each year to see John of God and his home, the Casa de Dom Inácio de Loyola, which is designed to accommodate hundreds of visitors each day.

Despite all the media attention paid to this inter-nationally praised healer, little has been revealed about his personal life. Translator Heather Cumming and photographer Karen Leffler have traveled with John of God and chronicled his life and work. What began as an endeavor to document the testimonials of his remarkable healings has now become the first complete, authorized portrait of his world.

Stirring words and vivid photographs -- many of which capture the haunting spiritual energy that surrounds John of God and the Casa -- take us on an affecting and deeply personal journey with the humble medium who offers hope for people with none. The result is an intimate portrait of an ordinary individual in extraordinary circumstances and a reading experience that will bring readers of every persuasion closer to their faith.

5 out of 5 stars i am a believer.......2007-10-07

i just had the opportunity to see John of God at Omega Institute in Rhinebeck, NY (his second visit to the U.S.). i did read the book first, and was skeptical but open-minded. the experience turned out to be so personal, so spiritual that i have never felt as close to god and spirit as i did when i was instructed to sit in one of the current rooms to receive a healing. reading the book and of others' experiences, however miraculous, cannot compare to having experienced actually being in his presence. it will leave you with no doubt that he is the real thing. i know certain debunkers have claimed that he does this for the money, but his devotion to his calling in service to others pales to all the ways there are to make money in this world. and if he does make money at it, he well deserves every penny of it and more. he should be a very wealthy man. why is it that the debunkers will cry and point their fingers at miracle workers such as John of God and make claims that they only do it for the money, while doctors are allowed to charge for their services and its acceptable and expected? even miracle workers have bills to pay and need food, clothing and shelter. why should they be expected to do it for free and have to explain to the world what they do with the money they collect (on a donation basis, by the way). god give gifts and talents to musicians, artists and many of us, does that mean we do not have the right to charge for our services? thank you, John of God, for your self-sacrifice and for those that help you at the Casa. If everyone in our world just had a small piece of the godliness of your work, wow - what a wonderful world it would be. i thank you for my healing. god bless.

5 out of 5 stars A comprehensive and informative gift of a book.......2007-08-30

There are many questions the average visitor has about the Casa, and John of God. This book to me is truly an inside look that accurately portraits the healing, loving atmosphere that exists in the hearts of The Entities, the volunteers, and most of all Medium Joao, who has devoted his life to aiding the suffering of humanity. Here we read about courage, hope, and the benevolent spirits who work through this humble man. I have been to John of God five times, yet found this book so helpful and inspiring to read, and I referred to it many times on my most recent trip. I recommend it to all seekers who wish to be touched by healing.

I was very pleased to read a book that carried the same feelings and thoughts of living in this little town second by second with what we all seem to absorb. I am touched by writers who can convey to me once again what I felt while being there at The Casa. A true feeling of still being there while providing more facts and insights to an amzing community of volunteers, helpers, healers, and to John of God.
Thank you all for this book !

Every day literally hundreds of people wait in a small Brazilian town to see John of God, renown for his miraculous healing abilities. This is the first authorized portrait of his life and miracles, charting how the uneducated tailor began his life of service at age 16 after being visited by a vision. Color photos document his healings and some of those who have been healed, reviewing his messages and the impact he's had on the lives of his followers. Any in-depth spirituality collection will find it a top pick.

I am a regular visitor to the Casa and find I have nothing to add to the glowing comments already written. This book reflects my own experience and offers deeper insights into Medium Joao and his mission. It's a "keeper" of the highest sort!

Malledd was "touched by the gods" when he was born; that is, he emerged from his mother's womb bearing a birthmark indicating he was the chosen champion of the gods, destined to one day defend the Domdur Empire. But the empire has long been at peace, and the gods have ceased dispensing their wisdom to humanity, so Malledd apprentices with his father to learn the trade of smithery. When the evil wizard Rebiri raises an army of the dead while simultaneously undermining Domdur's government from within, Malledd reluctantly comes to realize that he is the one who must rise to the challenge and save Domdur.

Book Description

When the baby Malledd is born to an ordinary family in a small country town, the oracles name him the true chosen Champion of the Domdur Empire. Should the Empire find itself at war, Malledd will be the one to lead them to victory, by the gods' decree. But all has been at peace for generations, and Malledd disbelieves the prophecy. He is, he says, just an ordinary smith, and goes about his life being just that. Now, in the dark hills of the Eastern lands, a centuries-old promise has come to its end, and an army of undead soldiers led by a dark magician threatens to topple the Empire. An Imperial Army is quickly gathered, and the Champion sought for. Will he answer his call? Or will the Empire fall because of one man's refusal to be anything other than normal?

4 out of 5 stars A Good Story.......2002-01-06

I enjoy almost any story written by Mr Wyatt-Evans and this book was no exception. I thought the story came from a different perspective and I enjoyed the way the story moved along. From my view, this is a different kind of "hero saves the world" story.

3 out of 5 stars Good but nothing special.......2001-01-05

This isn't the best Watt-Evans book I've ever read. The main heroe just doesn't quite manage to get me interested and I find that the characters are pretty much your standard cast. There's your reluctant heroe, a good noble man doing his best for his country, a wife that wants her husband to stay home, a corrupt noble who doese stupid deals and an evil man fo wants to kill the good guys. To Evans credit he does manage to make an intersting storie out of these characters and it keeps you reading til you've finished the book. I thought the end was just a bit to hollywood for my taste and it sort of brings the book down, but hey some people love these kind of endings. I'd recommand people who haven't read any of his work to read first books like Unwilling Warlord, Cyborg and the Sorcerer, and The misenchanted sword. How ever, if you are a fan already then you should read this book it's worth the time.

3 out of 5 stars Unremarkable, and not very imaginative.......2000-11-14

The main feature to this book is it's mediocrity. It wasn't bad, but it also wasn't very good. The characters seemed likeable enough, but there were too many of them for any of them to be developed at any depth. The plot was fairly standard high fantasy, complacent, peaceful empire vs evil, dark horde, without any surprises or suspenseful moments. The setting was also pretty average, consisting of small agrarian villages and the big walled city (sort of magical/mythical medieval). Those who really love classic high fantasy, such as David Eddings, might enjoy this. Anyone who is looking for something new and different should try something else.

2 out of 5 stars Very Generic.......2000-02-18

Some of Watt-Evans books are pretty good, so when I saw this one I picked it up. Big mistake. Did he consciously try to write the most generic story possible? Village blacksmith, disliked by his peers, is "touched by the gods" with supernatural powers, and is fated to go forth and save everyone from an evil power, blah, blah, blah. People, just because you like sci-fi/fantasy doesn't mean every such book is great. The other reviewer was right - go pick up a book by Guy Gavriel Kay ("A Song for . . ."), George R.R. Martin, or even Steven Brust.

5 out of 5 stars Interesting, engaging fantasy........1999-11-20

Touched By The Gods was consistent with its own rules, the characters were developed in an interesting way, and the plot was reasonable within the framework of the world Watt-Evans presented. Plot development was adequately complex without turning into a mystery novel. I enjoyed this book tremendously; my favorite authors are Mercedes Lackey, Andre Norton, C. J. Cherryh, J. V. Jones, and yes, David Eddings. I've enjoyed this book as much as from these other authors.

In the Gospel of John, Jesus promised that even the most ordinary believer could work the mightiest miracles: "Anyone who has faith in me will do what I have been doing." In Mystics and Miracles, author Bert Ghezzi takes Jesus at his word, describing the paradoxically exalted and down-to-earth characters of Catholicism's greatest saints. The book collects almost two dozen brief character sketches composed of lively and often humorous anecdotes, most of which concern the role of the Holy Spirit in empowering believers, and the ways that saints both desire and resist the Spirit's power. St. Lutgarde of Awyieres, for instance, asked God to take back her healing powers when the lines of petitioners grew so long that she barely had time for prayer. Mystics and Miracles offers an easy-to-read introduction to saintly lives that will particularly appeal to young people. --Michael Joseph Gross

Book Description

Through twenty-four intimate biographies, author Bert Ghezzi introduces us to the diverse personalities and extraordinary lives of the men and women known as mystics. Mystics are ordinary people who have been touched by God and introduced to the mysteries of Christís death and resurrection. They are true wonder-workers who fulfill Jesusí prediction that his apostles would perform greater works than He.

From visions and healings to prophesies and miracles, mystics are a direct connection between the human and the divine. Ghezziís stories touch us by revealing this humanity and making the mystics real in Mystics & Miracles.

5 out of 5 stars Extraordinary lives of ordinary people.......2005-08-28

I loved this book. It told the lives of these saints in down to earth terms that you could really connect with. At the same time it also told about the miracles that God worked through these saints, explaining why or when God did these miracles and what the results were. I really learned how very practical God can be in working miracles through people to draw people closer to Himself. A WONDERFUL little book!
I can't resist adding what was on the back cover of this book.
"When one of the novices in his monastery decided to give up the religious life for one of wealth and luxury, Martin de Porres did everything -- including pass through locked doors -- to convince the young man of his true call.
When given the divine gift of healing, Lutgarde of Aywieres asked God, "Why did you give me such a grace, Lord? Take it away, please!" Then she impishly added, "But give me something getter!"
"'Bert Ghezzi has rescued mysticism from the midst of trendy spiritualities. In Mystics and Miracles, he shows us how God breaks suddenly and powerfully into the lives of ordinary people -- like you and me -- and changes then forever. If your prayer leaves you longing for more of God, read this book, slowly.' Mike Aquilina, editor, New Covenant"
"'Bert Ghezzi combines a wonderfully engaging style with real spiritual substance that feeds the soul. I highly recommend it.' Charles J Chaput, O.F.M., Cap. archbishop of Denver"
I can only say "Amen!" to the above paragraphs of these great books!
This book includes stories about the following saints in alphabetical order:
Anthony of Egypt, Anthony of Padua, Apphian, Catherine of Siena, Clare of Assissi, Dominic, Elizabeth of Hungary, Francis of Assissi, Francis of Paola, Francis Xavier, Gertrude the Great, Ignatius of Loyola, Joan of Arc, John Bosco, Lutgarde of Aywieres, Martin de Porres, Padre Pio (Blessed), Patrick, Perpetua, Sabas, Solanus Casey (Venerable), Teresa of Avila, Theresa Margaret, Vincent Ferrer

5 out of 5 stars encouraging book for hard times.......2002-05-15

I came upon Ghezzi's book during a very difficult time in my life. I picked it up because I thought it would be interesting (which it was) but it was more than that. It was encouraging, consoling, amusing, fortifying and helped give me insight to deal with my own situation.

Ghezzi combines stories about the struggles and miracles of the saints with excerpts from their writings (and occasional quotes from others...I liked the remark of retreat master Martin Smith: "Do you really believe that God hides his will from us and expects us to search for it as though we are on a treasure hunt?").

I came away from Mystics and Miracles impressed not so much with the miracles as with the mystics themselves...their wholehearted reliance on God and his care for them. Ghezzi manaages to create a sense of solidarity on the part of the mystics with us ordinary humans. I had the sense, after reading it, that these men and women were my partners on the path of life and if they could make it through hard times, so could I.

5 out of 5 stars Supernatural Sanctity on the Streets.......2002-05-02

Whatýs the difference between a magician and a mystic? The magician tricks you into seeing visible things that arenýt really there, and the mystic opens your eyes to invisible things that really are. Whatýs that got to do with Bert Ghezziýs new book? Its mystics use all sorts of inexplicable marvels ý visions, healings, prophecies, you name it ý to help you see your way to the ultimate unseen reality: God.

The miracles are mind-blowing, no question about that. Weýre talking otherworldly, occasionally bizarre incidents ý phenomena that would seem like so much sleight of hand if not for the sanctity of the souls around whom the jaw-dropping oddities regularly occurred. St. Dominic raises the dead. Padre Pio receives the wounds of Christ and is physically present in two places at once. St. Theresa Margaretýs body refuses to decay, to this day, since her death in 1770. And so on.

But consider yourself forewarned: If itýs a sideshow youýre after, youýll waste your time and money on this title. For Ghezziýs only so interested in the signs and wonders that followed his subjects wherever they went. What heýs really after is the unfailingly generous way they answered Godýs call to holiness ý and what their example can teach us about answering that call ourselves.

Ghezzi excels at combining concise, fast-paced biographical sketches with carefully selected, illustrative anecdotes that show the mysticsý faith in action. Yet itýs his personal, sometimes bracingly candid, reflections on the impact the mystics have made on his own life that, for me, set this volume apart from others of its kind.

I also like the way Ghezzi helps make sense of the mystical phenomena he cites by separating it into six categories ý miracles of love; miraculous prayer; dreams, visions, and other wonders; miracles of conversion; miracles to awaken us; and miracles that changed the course of history.

About the only thing I would have liked to see more of, particularly when reading about some of the more eye-popping occurrences, is direct referencing to sources and eyewitness accounts. Alas, thatýs probably the journalist in me. Or maybe itýs my inner Doubting Thomas. Either way, I donýt think Iým the only reader who will be tempted to ask, when reading about, for example, Jesus appearing to St. Gertrude and transporting her from her cell to a separate part of her convent: ýCome on ý did this really happen?ý

And maybe my skepticism is a sign of how much I need a book like this. Not so much as a reference work, but as a guide to prayer and contemplation. Ghezzi was way ahead of me on that thought.

...

No argument here. And hereýs hoping my enjoyment of Ghezziýs book is not the fascination of a bystander drawn to the believe-it-or-not hour, but rather a manifestation of rightly ordered mysticism, or some small semblance of it, at work in my own life.

"Most of us will never experience mystical phenomena," he writes. "No raptures, ecstasies or other preternatural events will overtake us. I don't know about you, but I'm grateful for that, because mystical consolations come at a great personal cost that I am not sure I'm ready to pay. However, we can permit God to lift us up, embrace us, press us to his cheek, feed us, teach us to walk in his way, lead us with human ties of love, and listen to our prayers. Wouldn't you consider that to be miraculous? I would."

No argument here. And here's hoping my enjoyment of Ghezzi's book is not the fascination of a bystander drawn to the believe-it-or-not hour, but rather a manifestation of rightly ordered mysticism, or some small semblance of it, at work in my own life.

    Book Description

To a blind person, human touch is essential. In the absence of facial expressions, it reassures and comforts. But can you still feel the warm and soothing touch of an unseen God? Author and musician Jennifer Rothschild, who lost her vision at the age of fifteen, explains how God's touch works from the inside out, warming the heart, mind, and soul. It lifts weights that eyes could never see. It washes away the anguish of guilt, the bite of fear, and the ache of loneliness. With the gentle pressure of His hand on our shoulders, we can find our way through the darkest of nights.

      Book Description

My prayer is that my readers will take heed of what the Holy Spirit is doing today. Do not limit the Living God to the minute things of life, but through the Holy Spirit dare to trust God for “anything” and know He will do it! The recreation of an eye, internal organs, or any part of the human body—these miracles do not surprise me in any way. It would surprise me if they didn't happen. This “knowing” is the prime factor that keeps me in constant contact with God. Being “in tune” with the Holy Spirit and doing the will of God is my priority! Remember this: God is no respecter of persons. What He has done for others, He can do for you—and will. Just use your faith! Have faith in God, expect God to give you the miracle that you need, and it will happen!

        Book Description

In a soul-lifting collection that resounds with joy, today's black gospel superstars tell how the Lord has changed their lives and shaped their music. Dr. Bobby Jones, host of Black Entertainment Television's Bobby Jones Gospel and Video Gospel, joins Kirk Franklin, John P. Kee, Albertina Walker, Dottie Peoples, Shirley Caesar, and others whose personal stories, like the healing, hopeful music they were called to sing, are celebrations of God's glory.

With millions of fans worldwide, gospel music has reverberated out of the church and into the mainstream -- echoing a global need for direction in an uncertain world. As rousing as a gospel choir in full swing, these stories confirm the power of music and faith, as nineteen top recording artists share their triumphs and trials, and the times when God touched their lives. For some, the Lord reached out to them in an unforgettable instant. For others, finding Him took them down a longer road....

Kirk Franklin reveals how it took the violent death of his close friend for God to reach out and touch him, and turn him from a gang-banger to a minister for Christ.

John P. Kee affirms that God saved him from drugs and the fast-money lifestyle of the streets.

Shirley Caesar remembers how she fell apart when her mother died, and how the Lord helped put the pieces of her life back together.

Given only a few months to live by his doctors, blind minister and gospel star Rev. James Moore praises God for a different kind of prognosis that keeps him singing to this very day.

Gospel matriarch Albertina Walker's testimony affirms her God-given stamina in a harsh world that has tried to knock her down more than once.

Dottie Peoples describes an encounter with an angel that took her out of nightclubs and returned her to singing gospel music in church.

Overflowing with the blessedness of knowing God, and ringing with emotion, these and other inspiring accounts of hope and transformation bring us closer to the wonderful performers who deliver God's message in their powerful music -- and will stir the hearts of those looking to strengthen their own ties with the Lord.

        Book Description

Fifteen Cults, Churches and Cabals for the D20 System!

Even in a world overflowing with magic, the mark of the gods is unmistakable. Some mortals actively curry the gods' favor, serving their high ideals or executing their blasphemous designs. Others are random victims or beneficiaries of divine attention. Those whom the gods have touched may be inspired, blessed, cursed -- the saint and the prophet, the genius and the madman, sometimes one and the same person.

Touched by the Gods is a D20 roleplaying supplement that can enhance any fantasy campaign. It is filled with information on religious and secular orders, and the deities lurking behind them. This hardcover book contains the following:
        * In-depth background on more than a dozen religious cults, secret societies, and strange cabals. Included are initiation rites and adventure seeds designed to let Game Moderators introduce whichever mysteries of the occult they like into their own campaign world.
        * A litany of new gods and the NPCs who would grasp their power, holy weapons, clerical domains, spells, feats and prestige classes, special attacks and abilities, fearsome monsters, creature templates, magical and cursed items, and the clandestine rituals that grant mere mortals a small taste of godhood.
        * Words straight from the mouths of the prophets, lending an atmosphere of intrigue and wonder to this latest tome in the ground-breaking Penumbra line of D20 System adventures and sourcebooks!

        5 out of 5 stars Religion... what a concept!.......2001-07-17

For those that are NOT familiar with the idea, WOTC has offered an 'Open Game License' to any publisher that would like to contribute to the further growth of the d20 system that has been implemented with D&D3Ed.

Up till now, I had not been overly impressed with products by Penumbra for the d20 system. That has changed. Touched by the Gods is a collection of fifteen Cults, Churches and Cabals (also in the form of prestige classes). The strongest point for this product is the rich detail given regarding each of these institutions.

After reading the book twice, it is my opinion that the Churches and classes asscoiated are best suited either to NPC's as support and framework for the campaign OR for all members of the party be somehow related to the group in question.

Either way, Touched by the Gods is very rich and rewarding reading in a nice hardback package.
