5 out of 5 stars Haddock is introduced in the Golden Claws.......2007-08-23

Thundering Typhoons!! Had been trying to get my hands on this issue as it introduces my fave. character!! It compliments the package well because the issues are in a sequence and one ends up getting more of blistering barnacles! I would recommend this to Haddock's admiration club and otherwise as well!

2 out of 5 stars A little disappointing.......2007-02-07

The quality of the printing is far from perfect. It smooches on several pages. Also, I read the French version first and the English one is, in my opinion, rather lame. A lot of work would need to be done to improve it.

5 out of 5 stars Tintin on his adventures!.......2007-01-21

I have read many Tintin adventures and love them all. Herge can make very funny adventure stories.
In the book, The Crab with the Golden Claws, Tintin meets Captain Haddock. Captain Haddok loves whisky. Professor Calculus is not here. He comes in Red Rackham's treasure.

Volume 3: The Crab With the Golden Claws (1942), The Shooting Star (1942), The Secret of the Unicorn (1943). This is the third instalment of my reviews of each of the seven volumes.

As I mentioned in my review for Volume 1, as a child I read these stories in no particular order. So, when reading The Crab With the Golden Claws, I was surprised to see Captain Haddock in such a pitiable state, having made his acquaintance in later adventures...

But this is where he is introduced, and the friendship that develops between Haddock and Tintin not only allows the alcoholic captain to bloom, it lifts the curtain on one of the most entertaining, impulsive (Haddock = ad hoc, get it? In French, the pronunciation of the two is exactly the same...), flawed, and in essence loyal, good hearted and lovable characters in all comicdom. His irascible nature will be abundantly prodded with insufferable foils (Wagg, Abdullah, Castafiore, the Thom(p)sons, and sundry villains) throughout the series. We also meet the sinister Allan for the first time. The story takes place in Morocco, and the child sees yet more of our planet's vistas, while the adult continues to revel in Hergé's textured adventures and detailed settings, as well as a terrifying dream sequence.

Michael Farr's "Tintin: The Complete Companion" (highly recommended), gives a glimpse at why Tintin did not take in the USA as it did in the rest of the world, and that has to do with a couple of panels from The Shooting Star. Though with some brilliant sequences, such as the cinematic seasickness scene, it is not as captivating as the usual Tintin standard, but again, one does not want to miss a single adventure.

The Secret of the Unicorn has a number of threads, one of which develops into the sequel, Red Rackham's Treasure.

3 out of 5 stars A LIFE CHANGING READ.......2007-05-29

Growing up in Northern Virginia I always had a vague sense of the crab's popularity, both for dining and as a sort of a local mascot for people who live near the Bay. However, I had only eaten them at my aunt's house in Benedict, MD. and thought them to be strange and hard to eat. They made me feel inferior some how not knowing the technique and how exactly my aunt was able to come up with these bushels during the warm summer months. I dedicated last summer to learning all about the Bay and the blue crab and the wonderful people who make a living off them. I was transformed with the knowledge from the book that explains so many details about the life of the crab, the watermen and their families. The author is so creative with the insights he reveals. After reading this book, I am equipped to speak intelligently about the geographical areas, crab industry and most importantly-how to get and eat these beautiful swimmers!

3 out of 5 stars Attention to Detail.......2006-06-03

Whereas I found this book to be quite informative, the author's attention to detail about every aspect and apparatus of a waterman's life on the Cheasapeake Bay to be a bit much. I found it difficult to find interest in how many eel baits were used on a trotline and how close together they were spaced. Not being well versed on the parts of various fishing vessels, I found myself lost as to what the author was writing about not to mention the numerous detailed descriptions of every piece of fishing apparatus employed by watermen.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful Swimmers.......2005-08-18

Beautiful Swimmers was given to me by a relative mixed in with a number of Bay-related books(including Tom Horton's Island Out of Time and several others).
Often, environmental writers stand the risk of in a way reducing the Bay to merely some sort of ecological experiment. Some I have read do not take into account that every little change in the Bay, whether the fault of Mother Nature or ourselves, drastically affects the people whose entire livelihood is fished out of these waters. Fortunately, the author(s) of Beautiful Swimmers does not fall into that trap.
The Watermen have a unique love affair with the Blue Crab. As evidenced by my own home town's "Hard Crab Derby" celebration ever year. This book, I think, gives a very fair and honest portrayal of these seemingly simple people with seemingly simple lives. Its handling of carcinological matters is anything but boring, including an in-detail description of how the crabs make love.
I would highly suggest this work not only for its informative value but for its treatment of the inherant poetry and beauty of the Bay. Even at the time of its publishing, the downward trend in the Bay's health was growing more evident. Today the situation is even more precarious, and requires a very delicate balance between the health of the Bay that supports so many and the people themselves, whose lives have been spent gleaning from these once bountiful waters an income, and who keep alive the traditions of Watermen from over four centuries ago.
Let us protect the Bay, this precious resource of ours, but we must not forget about the people.

Once again, an exceptional book, and one that I recommend for anyone interested in the Conservation of the Chesapeake Bay and the people that depend upon it.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Educational.......2005-01-03

I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I spent summers as a kid catching crabs and seeing commercial crabbers outside my grandparents' home but there was a lot about the industry and the bay that I didn't know. I felt like an eavesdropper on an unfamiliar yet familiar world as I read this book, and found my curiousity awakened. The writers clear appreciation for his subject shines through, and it is a delight to discover even many years after it was written.

5 out of 5 stars It Takes You There...........2004-11-16

Beautiful Swimmers will make you feel like you are a part of growing up in the Chesapeake Bay region. If you already did so, it will bring you back home.

Beautiful Swimmers serves as excellent literature for a multitude of readers: naturalists, historians, travellers, and folks who enjoy reading a good novel. It also provides a good blend of natural and cultural resource history.

I moved to the Chesapeake Bay area (Deale, MD) several years ago and was referred to Beautiful Swimmers by several members of the Chesapeake Bay Foundation. Prior to reading Beautiful Swimmers, I grew extremely fond of living on the bay. Since reading the book, I have that much more appreciation for the culture of the bay.

Book Description

No profession pits man against nature more brutally than king crab fishing in the frigid, unpredictable waters of the Bering Sea. The yearly death toll is staggering (forty-two men in 1988 alone); the conditions are beyond most imaginations (90-mph Arctic winds, 25-foot seas, and super-human stretches of on-deck labor); but the payback, if one survives can be tens of thousands of dollars for a month-long season. In a breathtaking, action-packed account that combines his personal story with the stories of survivors of the industry's most harrowing disasters, Spike Walker re-creates the boom years of Alaskan crab fishing--a modern-day gold rush that drew hundreds of fortune-and adventure-hunters to Alaska's dangerous waters--and the crash that followed.

5 out of 5 stars Great read!.......2007-09-02

This book is a great add-on, if you are a fan of the deadliest catch on the discovery channel. It gives a true account of how the crab boom started and the crazy amount of money you could make in just a 29 day season. I really enjoyed this book and would recomend it to anyone who likes to read about adventure situations.

4 out of 5 stars Sincere and full of insight.......2007-08-28

I literally devoured the book. If you love the sea, and had some experience with it, it will be very easy to fully understand the powers that these people where facing. The story shows in a very plain manner the continuous struggle of mankind in order to take advantage of the earth's resources. It shows many aspects of human nature: Love for the sea. Thirst for adventure and freedom. GREED, and what men can face in order to satisfy it. And (something that people who have been in the sea for a while completely understand), the incredibly simple and strong relationship that develops between crewmates.
I enjoyed very much reading this book

I bought this book for my husband because he loves the tv show - actually, so do I! Anyway, he loved the book and is already asking me when I am going to order him more Spike Walker books. By the way, my husband doesn't usually like to read so I was particularly impressed that he liked this book.

4 out of 5 stars Working on the Edge - a review.......2007-07-23

This book about Alaskan crab fishing is somewhat dated, but it gives a wonderful first-hand account of what crab fishing was like 20 + years ago.

5 out of 5 stars Solid.......2007-07-23

This book offers its reader the opportunity to experience the life an Alaskan crabber at a slightly more in-depth level than just "Deadliest Catch." It is a narrative that sequencely takes you through the exciting "glory days" of the crab industry. The book is full of interesting facts and insights; however, the style flows like a suspense as you await each amazing event of these true stories.

Book Description

Where do you get the best crab cakes? Ask one hundred different people and you'll likely get one hundred different answers. Some swear by classic Chesapeake Bay crab cakes, and some by spicy Creole crab cakes, while others maintain that Pacific Northwest crab cakes can't be beat. In I Love Crab Cakes!, award-winning chef and cookbook author Tom Douglas brings the best of East, West, and Gulf coasts to the table and proves that the most delicious crab cakes of all come straight from your home kitchen.

Tom thoroughly examines every thorny, crab cake-related issue. Bread crumbs, cracker crumbs, panko, or no crumbs at all? What kind of crabmeat: Dungeness, king, or Peeky Toe? Are the best crab cakes pan-fried, deep-fried, or not even cooked?

Tom offers up dozens of his famous crab cake recipes, including classic crab cakes from East and West, North and South, plus newer innovations such as Wild Ginger Crab Cakes, Pesto Risotto Crab Cakes, and Crab Louie Cheesecakes. There are crab cake sandwiches, breakfast crab cakes, and crab cake sauces and salsas.

"One subject matter, doesn't it beat it to death?" to which we answer: "we love crab cakes. What part of "love" don't you understand?"

A welcome, thorough, easy, delightful addition to any home cook's bookshelf.

"Time to move," said Hermit Crab one day. "I've grown too big for this little shell." Much-loved master of cut-paper collage Eric Carle created A House for Hermit Crab to comfort any little ones (okay, and adults, too) who dread change--whether the new shell is a new home, a new school, or a new experience. In this soothing, upbeat story, Hermit Crab casts his eyestalks on a newer, bigger shell, but it seems plain and unwelcoming at first. When he meets some beautiful, swaying sea anemones, he asks if one of them will come to adorn the outside of his shell. In time a colorful sea star, some coral, an industrious sea snail, a fortress-protecting sea urchin, and an illuminating lantern fish all join forces with him, making his house a home. Much to his dismay, just when his dwelling and new family fit him to a T, he finds he's physically outgrown his shell yet again. Instead of bemoaning his fate, he eagerly spots a newer, bigger shell--to him a fresh, blank artist's canvas--and relishes the thought of all the undersea home-improvement possibilities: sponges, barnacles, clown fish, and more! Kids will love Carle's rich, affectionate portrayal of Hermit Crab's ocean odyssey, and the gentle story may help them see that giving up the old for the new is not a loss, but an opportunity. (Ages 4 to 8) --Karin Snelson

Book Description

Poor Hermit Crab! He's outgrown his snug little shell, so he finds himself a larger one -- and many new friends to decorate and protect his new house. But what will happen when he outgrows this shell and has to say good-bye to all the sea creatures who have made Hermit Crab's house a home?

Children facing change in their own lives will relate to Hermit Crab's story -- and learn a lot about the fascinating world of marine life along the way.

4 out of 5 stars A House for Hermit Crab Board Book.......2007-08-01

I enjoy reading this book not only to my 18 month old son but for myself.
At the moment he doesn't always sit for the whole book as it is a little long sometimes for a board book.
I feel this book shows how all things start out small and grow bigger.
It helps to have the months of the year in the story to show time passing!
I believe it is simple enough for a toddler to understand!

5 out of 5 stars Great book!.......2007-06-27

This book is used in our Kindergarten literacy program at school. My daughter enjoyed the book there and wanted one for home.

5 out of 5 stars Carle at his best.......2007-01-20

It is Carle at his best; it is pretty to look at, a sweet story about friendship and one that teaches about real sea creatures.

In this story a hermit crab must chose a new shell as he has out grown his old one. His new shell is rather boring so he decides to decorate it with other creatures and plants that live in the sea. Each month he finds a new friend to decorate his home. Of course by the end of the year when his home is perfect it is also too small! Now the hermit crab must learn about sharing and start decorating a new home.

4 out of 5 stars Review Me.......2005-12-20

This book was very good to read. It talked about a crab who wanted to find friends to go along wiht his new home. He found so many friends and all of them was convient to his new house.

5 out of 5 stars So many great lessons in this book!.......2005-07-11

My 3.5 year old son loves this book - we are typically reading it at least twice a day. I love that there is a since of time involved, as each page covers a month in the year. Great for a preschooler who is just learning to get a grip on the calendar. The hermit crab forms symbiotic relationships with other sea creatures; another great lesson. Also super fun to read out load with lots of opportunities to "do" the different voices. There is a glossary in back - perhaps a little advanced for a 3 yr old, but I enjoyed that the first time I read through the book - it will be good when my son is a little older. I like that, although our hermit crab has to eventually leave his friends behind in search of a new home, he is able to pass along his old home to a younger crab. All this with the style of illustrations that we have all come to love in eric Carle books, makes this one a big winner!

I bought this book after reading other Holling C. Holling books. The book is wonderful! The pictures are good and the story is excellent. What I love about Mr. Holling's books is that they can be used multi-level. Even my 3yo was interested in learning about Pagoo the Hermit Crab.

5 out of 5 stars This is fantastic classic for nature lovers.......2007-04-28

I first read this book when I was in graduate school. I was so excited about it that I gave it as a gift to several children and my biology professor. The story, the biology and the artwork all worked together to make this a sheer pleasure to read and share.

5 out of 5 stars I read this book several times as a child........2002-09-30

I loved Pagoo as a child and have just read it to my two boys. It is a wonderful story of a little hermit crab and his adventures while growing up in a tide pool by the sea.The illustrations are beautiful. A must for any young reader interested in ocean life.

5 out of 5 stars Still wonderful after all these years.......2002-09-13

I read this book in elementary school and went looking for it again last year as a gift for a niece. The story is wonderful and little Pagoo is a really lovable character. But there's also a lot of fascinating natural detail. And stunning illustrations. It's a children's book version of a top-notch Nature documentary. "Nova" in print, if you will. Also check out Holling Clancy Holling's other books. They're all great, even looking back at them after three decades.

3 out of 5 stars Still holds up after 30 years...........2001-09-04

I remember my 4th grade teacher read this to a group of restless, bored kids, that is until we all (well, most of us) became enthralled by Pagoo. I suddenly remembered this title 30 years after being introduced to it by my teacher at Francis Scott Key Elementary School in San Francisco in 1972, Mrs. Marjorie Parkhurst. My 6-year old daughter is currently fascinated by sea creatures (as I was at her age), tide pools and such, and recently acquired a pet Hermit Crab after relentlessly hounding me for one. I'm sure she'll enjoy it as much as I did. If not, well, then I'll have to look up Mrs. Parkhurst and blame her for being a much better storyteller than I am! ;)

Interesting, informative, and very helpful. Looking forward to more of the same in cookbooks.

5 out of 5 stars Not just for outdoor cooking!.......2006-11-11

This book contains fabulous recipes that can be made at home as well without using a Dutch oven. It is filled with ideas that are simple and fast to prepare with easily obtained ingredients. The author uses recipes that have been tried and refined by people whose business it is to entertain and please hungry folks with delicious food. These recipes are a notch above most one-pot recipes I have encountered. I purchased one as a gift for my outdoor-loving friends and ended up ordering one for my home as well.

3 out of 5 stars Too Complicated.......2006-09-27

All the recipes are pretty advanced (and expensive). I'd like to see more easy dishes that don't take 5 hours to prepare and $100 per oven.

5 out of 5 stars The Outdoor Dutch Oven Cookbook .......2005-10-20

This is well organized and appealing book for outdoor cooker. If you have cast iron dutch oven, you have to have this one.

4 out of 5 stars Great receipes, assumes basic skill however.......2005-09-29

I have been collecting and trying dutch oven receipes for some time and found the content of the Outdoor Dutch Oven book very solid. Some receipes are too involved for outdoor trips, but would work just fine in the kitchen. I originally checked the book out of the library, but was so impressed I thought it deserved to be purchased. The comments regarding no instruction on dutch oven skills are valid. You'll want another resource for that.

Book Description

Fred Thompson begins with a comprehensive chapter on the basics, describing every type of crab available, how to buy it, how to clean it, and how to cook it and crack it. Then comes all the glorious recipes you could ever want to make with crab.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The School of Crab Cooking.......2005-03-22

This book takes all of the fear out of cooking with crab. Fred explains step by step everything I needed to know to select crab, cook it, and use it in recipes.
I hosted a Crazy for Crab Dinner with every course a recipe from this book. The Crab Bisque is creamy heaven, the Crab Salad on spring greens is easy and delicious, and most of all the Pretty Darn Close to Perfect Crab Cakes is easier than I expected to make and everyone says they are the best they have ever tasted. The book even has a great Key Lime Pie for the grand finale. I will make all these recipes again and again.
You will be happy to have this book and will want to try all of the recipes!

5 out of 5 stars Leaves no crab uncooked.......2004-09-16

Fred Thompson's Crazy For Crab deserves ongoing recommendation as a lovely survey of different types of crab and how they can be easily prepared at home. From Soft Shell Crabs with Warm Tomato/Bacon Vinaigrette to Pumpkin Crab Soup, Thompson's Crazy For Crab leaves no crab uncooked.

4 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and Drool Inducing!.......2004-06-27

In what can only be considered a "love note" to all things crab, Fred Thompson has created an absolutely definitive guide for crab lovers everywhere. Beginning with what he calls "The Crab Basics", a discussion of the types of crab available as well as the various methods for selecting and storing crab products, and ending with a list of crab festivals around the country, "Crazy for Crab" offers something for even the most casual of crab fans.

With twelve recipes for crab cakes alone (ranging from the basic to the very fancy - tarragon aioli anyone?), Thompson has more than covered the territory. Included are soup and appetizer recipes, as well as many for salads and casseroles. The level of involvement and difficulty for the recipes ranges from the very simple to the relatively complex and for every recipe the likes of Crab Imperial (that is, well known and fairly easy to track down) he includes another for a dish altogether more exotic and modern tasting - Thai crab cakes with chili-garlic sauce, for example

From the everyday to the sublime, Thompson has covered it all. Augmented with discussions and recipes for bay seasoning and homemade tartar sauce, this comprehensive work is recommended for anyone who enjoys these sweet gifts from the sea.

Now if I could only just get a way to have more crabs coming to Nashville.... A wonderful cookbook! If you love crabs-why are you still reading this? Buy the Book, already!

He experiences many new things, like how to select his first shell and he even discovers the lost Hunley submarine. Hermy finds a great place to call home with other hermit crabs just like him. This beautifully illustrated children's book invites you to travel along with Hermy the Hermit Crab on his very first adventure!

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Hermy Does It Again!.......2005-09-09

Once again author Andrea Weathers and illustrator Bob Thames have teamed up to produce another engaging and beautifully illustrated story about a little hermit crab. In this prequel to their first book, Hermy the Hermit Crab Goes Shopping, we find Hermy in the waters off Folly Beach, SC at the time of his "birth". He once again travels to real-life Charleston SC Lowcountry destinations as he grows larger with each site he visits. By the end of the book Hermy finds himself where he started out in the first book. Ms. Weathers captures the essence of coastal living through the eyes of Hermy in a way that is educational and entertaining. Mr. Thames artwork is phenomenal with its colorful images and attention to detail. The innovative format also includes a map of Hermy's journey, and an informative "Hermy's Glossary". I have given the book to children of all ages. It makes a great lap book for children who are not reading yet, but who will be enchanted by the colorful and detailed pictures and fast moving storyline. Older school children will also enjoy the book for its educational value. I highly recommend the book and I can’t wait to see what Hermy will be up to in the next book!!

Book Description

What does America really eat? Which recipes do real home cooks turn to again and again? More often than not, they are dishes handed down from great aunts and painstakingly copied out of smudged recipe boxes rather than the creations of celebrity chefs. Bonny Wolf, food commentator for NPR’s “Weekend Edition”, writes about the great regional and family food traditions in this country—birthday cake and dinner party food, hearty American breakfasts and Fourth of July picnic dishes. In Talking with My Mouth Full, she writes stories about food, and also about the people who eat it.

This book gives a snapshot of the American traditions that have contributed to what and how we eat. Food trends come and go, but many delightful national treasures—bundt cake, barbecue, roast chicken, fair food—are timeless. Each of Bonny Wolf’s chapters, whether she’s writing about true regional specialties like Minnesota’s wild rice, Texas’ Blue Bell ice cream or Maryland’s famous crab cakes or about family favorites like noodle pudding or Irish raisin soda bread, ends with a perfectly chosen group of recipes, tantalizing and time-tested.

In the tradition of Laurie Colwin’s Home Cooking, Talking with My Mouth Full is a book you will turn to over and over for wonderful food writing and recipes for comfort food, a great nosh, or the ideal covered dish to take to a potluck supper.

5 out of 5 stars Connecting with food and family history.......2007-09-03

I loved this book -- I had originally checked it out of the library, but had to buy my own copy. I wanted to write notes in it, mark passages to share with my parents -- it's a book that inspires you to think about families and food, plus it has some wonderful recipes. A must read.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous and mouth-watering.......2007-06-27

Bonnie Wolf has written an absolutely beautiful meditation on the subject of food and its relationship to people. Throughout the reading of the book, I found myself nodding and thinking "The woman knows of what she speaks", particularly in her fantastic section on comfort foods. In the photograph on the book cover, Bonnie looks like someone I would very much like to know -- her kindness and joie de vivre shine through on every page. And the recipes, the recipes. Alas, too often reliant on processed ingredients which are not (and God willing never will be) available here in Eastern Europe where I live, but the recipes, the recipes! Thank you, Bonnie!

5 out of 5 stars Terrific read.......2007-05-10

I loved this book. It was so real, reading made me hungry to try the many recipes. Though on some subconscious level I realized the importance of food, cooking, and recipes in my life, to have it written in such a way made it wonderfully apparent how. I too was a bit disappointed with how abruptly the book ended, I wanted a conclusion of sorts. Still a very wonderful book with special meaning to those of us who realize our lives are intertwined with food experiences.

5 out of 5 stars A Gem of a Book.......2007-03-29

"Talking with my Mouth Full" had me laughing with my mouth full of Bonny Wolf's comfy recipes.

5 out of 5 stars MOST YUMMISH!!!!.......2007-01-18

What a delightful book!! A mouthwatering book with great "conversation", traveling tidbits, and recipes.

I will definitely make the Gas Company Candy -- too bad today's utility bills aren't "sweetened" with such welcomed inserts.

Since I live in the DC area, I really resonated with (and enjoyed) all the descriptions of the Lexington market, Eastern Market, the delightful La Cuisine, and of course, the inimitable Bawlmor - what great memories (culinary and otherwise) this evoked!!

My only disappointment came when the book ended -- it felt like I was in the middle of eating a GREAT meal and suddenly all the food was taken away from the table! Oh please, if you re-issue this book -- put a picture (in color) of one of those sweet creations you wrote about, like maybe Smith Island Cake, on the last page, so we do not feel such a let-down!!!
