A wider view.......2007-09-08
Although several chapters are reprinted from authors' other works, the collection is a good introduction to a wider view of Christianity's role in the 21st century world. Appreciated the chapter on music's place in new forms of worship.
Weak on Sin.......2007-06-20
I love reading Fox and Borg, but often find a pollyanish treatment of the terrible consequences of human sin, especially in the omission of any mention of those consequences, is unsatisfactory. I'm also not sure that denominational identity in Christian life is dead, given the increasing, rather than decreasing, number of theological perspectives with adherents today. I have it, but i'll probably give it away soon.
from Copperhead Press.......2006-07-07
Chrisitianity is changing. In recent years and in rapidly increasing numbers, people have begun to understand the core message and purpose of Christianity in a different way. They have returned to its ancient roots and found a wisdom that speaks to their experience of faith and God today. According to this emerging vision, Christianity is primarily about transformation--about the transformation of the self through a living and dynamic experience og God, who is not separate from us but who is a part of us; and about the transformation of society. This amazing collection of fourteen essays, by some of the leading authors and creative thinkers in the field, covers every aspect of this developing Christianity. Key concepts--such as deep ecology, social justice, radical inclusion, and the importance of honoring the wisdom of other world faiths--are explored. So, too, are the implications for worship, music, pastoral care, and education.
Book Description
The Way of Conflict teaches strategies for using time-tested knowledge and modern techniques to confidently engage in any dispute and reach a balanced resolution. The book integrates the wealth of conflict skills found throughout the world's major religious and indigenous traditions with the latest scientific systems and conflict resolution theory. Using the cross-cultural metaphor of the four natural elements — earth, water, fire, and air — it identifies innate conflicts in personalities and offers productive paths through the chaos of conflict. Combining her extensive experience as a licensed mediator and corporate trainer with insight gained from years of spiritual study, Deidre Combs uses assessment tests, anecdotes from indigenous and religious traditions, and illustrative folktales to show how to quickly assess a conflict and implement an appropriate resolution strategy. The Way of Conflict helps people overcome the sense of hopelessness they feel when facing personal, national, or international conflicts, and can help improve relationships and decrease levels of stress and frustration.

A very useful guide to conflict resolution with other applications.......2007-01-03
I bought this book to see how it used the elements as a model within the context of conflict resolution/problem solving and to see if I could use the work in other contexts. I think a book like this would be difficult to write well because it requires extensive knowledge, practical experience and a decent deal of awareness and inner work in order to be able to describe the different viewpoints (i.e. earth, air, fire, water and their associated meanings) accurately. I think the author was reasonably successful in this regard. I say that because, since everyone's perception and experience and knowledge is unique, others may, and probably would, have included different exercises, tests or ways of interpreting the directions and their meanings than the author has in this book.
The model outlined in the book can be adapted to your own use (e.g. use different ideas for creativity processes/practices within the context of fire (representing creativity). The value in this book therefore the basics are nutted out for you and you can build upon it or tinker with parts, test and try things out etc and get something to work for your specific circumstances. Also, the model of conflict resolution could be adapted say to a model for change, team building, organisational learning etc., it has many uses since essentially it's based on the medicine wheel and all its associated meanings and uses (e.g. archetypes such as lover, magician, warrior, king).
The book is in several parts and comprehensively outlines the use of the elements for conflict resolution (it's important not to get too stuck on the word's 'conflict resolution' and to think wont apply to an issue or context you're working with). The book is based on the medicine wheel, although references the new sciences, spirituality, systems theory, business, and other domains and traditions appropriate to the topic at hand. The model outlined is basically articulated to arrive at solutions to 'problems' that are more informed and from a higher perspective and awareness than the originating 'problem', that is, using conflict to grow and become more aware, satisified, and develop outcomes that are more effective, efficient and suited to all (i.e. win-win). Basic tools and checklists are provided to get an assessment of your elemental personality style, that of your team and to gain awareness of other's styles, how they benefit (and limit) them and therefore how to work from a holistic perspective. According to the model a problem starts (usually) at the earth phase which is the change or disruption phase where you realise you have a problem and there's conflict in existance. Then, from there it moves to the water or chaos phase whereby things become less stable and uncertain, the initial position may be lost or let go of and things are in a state of flux. This is followed by the fire or evolution or creativity phase, where new solutions are created and passion may be ignited and solutions may be created that look nothing like the original circumstances. The final phase, air or stability is the implementation phase where creative ideas are put into action. This is just a brief overview of the model. Each chapter has an extensive description of each phase, what it might look like, quotes, tools and techniques you can use to work with and through that stage and practical examples and an 'elemental role model' who exemplifies that element, closing with a summary in table format of the element that you can refer to back to. There was only one stage where I felt in the book it bordered on 'New Age' (which is the type of work that I try to avoid), which was her description of transformation (and using some of Shakti Gawain's ideas), alhtough I guess that's just her choice of a model for change.
The author has extensive experience as a corporate trainer, mediator and has associated with the Naropa Institue her credentials are therefore sound. There's an excellent bibliography at the back and explanations of how the model fits with other similar works including The Fourfold Way.

Resolve disputes and overcome differences.......2004-08-07
Resolve disputes and overcome differences with the help of The Way Of Conflict, where common traps to progress are outlined and implications of conflict outside the situation at hand are considered. Chapters handle everything from initial conflicts to escalation to violence, using first-person and real-world experiences to explore problems and solutions.
Read & get ready to transform your view of conflict forever........2004-05-22
Don't let Deidre Combs light-hearted approach in The Way of Conflict fool you...she is up to serious business here. She offers deep insights into the nature of every conflict and into the heart of every person. Her lessons apply as well from your smallest spat to our world's oldest and most deadly dilemmas. It is my hope that her work sinks a hook into each reader as it did into me and gets us all re-thinking the possibilities for resolving of our worst personal conflicts. From there the resolutions to age-old conflicts in the Middle East, between nations, between peoples are but steps away.
This is not a light read. It is powerful. Like The Artist's Way it has the power to change you and your point of view. It is well researched and has an extensive Bibiography. And all for a very reasonable list price!
Beyond a bargain. A Gift.
some timely wisdom.......2004-05-08
This is one of those rare books that contains a deceptively simple idea that has fascinating and universal applications. It will change the way you think about conflict. I enjoyed the fact that it was practical but also philosophical. It seems very well researched. I particularly enjoyed the multi-cultural use of myths and stories to illustrate the concepts. This is a book full of wisdom.

Who but Matthew Fox--former Dominican priest, author of countless influential books such as Original Blessing and The Reinvention of Work, silenced by the Vatican for his controversial statements about creation spirituality, and now an Episcopal priest--would combine rave dances with a religious mass? And who else would now attempt such a distillation of the world's religions as this book brings us? Combining writings from a multitude of spiritual traditions, Fox here puts into practice the idea of deep ecumenism that he has been exploring in a series of books going back to The Coming of the Cosmic Christ in 1989. To accomplish this task, Fox focuses on four categories of spiritual inquiry that he sees running like a river through all spiritual traditions: how we relate to creation, to divinity, to ourselves (this includes topics such as meditation, art, ritual, sexuality), and, finally, how we relate to the future, a section that explores issues of service and compassion, justice and spiritual warriorhood. He then concludes with "18 New Myths and Visions" that summarize his central message.
Simplicity and clarity are the goals of this book. To achieve this Fox weaves his own brief commentary through a series of quotations drawn from a myriad of traditions. While it may be faulted by some for this method of making easy connections between traditions, the book serves its purpose as a kind of primer for deep ecumenism. It will be especially useful for those new to such ideas, and to those who might otherwise never meet Hildegard of Bingen and Julian of Norwich, Hafiz, and the Sufi Ibn Arabi--not to mention Thomas Aquinas, physicist Werner Heisenberg, and geologian Thomas Berry--all sharing each other's company. --Doug Thorpe
Book Description
Isn't it time, asks Matthew Fox, that instead of trying to convert one another we delved into one another's spiritual riches? We get to the core of religion by going to the heart experience, Fox says, not by dwelling on doctrines that so easily divide even within religious traditions. In One River, Many Wells, Fox exhorts readers to embrace the common faith of deep ecumenism.
Fox masterfully distills the common principles of the world's religions, and shows exactly how the different fingers of the world's faiths connect to a single hand. Drawing on seminal quotes, lessons, and ideas from the great faiths, he demonstrates how each expresses a common goal and approach to life, and concludes with "18 New Myths and Visions" that will inspire readers to embrace deep ecumenism.
One River, Many Wells is an indispensable resource, envisioning a new and exciting way of faith that erases the lines of false distinction between religions and calls upon each of us to worship from our common heart.

Diverse Paths but One Experience.......2006-01-01
This book by Matthew Fox is a wealth of information derived from many sources, the Old and New Testaments (Bible), the Koran, the Vedas, African religious traditions, Native American, Celtic sources, and Buddhism. Writing it must have been a huge undertaking but amazingly, the information flows *naturally* as it reveals the outpouring of Spirit in the lives of mankind throughout the world and over the millenia. Many of the experiences described are words which attempt to capture Divinity at work through particular individuals, societies, and their outcomes. The book is an *essential* exploration of mankind's relationship to each other, community, the earth, and the cosmos. It is an exploration of the meaning of Life itself. Like a previous reviewer, I had difficulty getting started. Initially, I tried reading it straight through but could not. Gradually, at different times, glancing at the chapters, I felt a surge of energy. The ideas and concepts explored by the author set my emotions and mind at ease. Eventually, I was able to "plunge in" and "swim" through the material with relative ease.
The book is divided into five sections, "Relating to Creation", "Relating to Divinity", "Relating to Ourselves: Paths to Encounter and Enlightenment", "Relating to the Future: What the Divine is Asking of Us", and "Where Do We Go from Here? How Deep Ecumenism Explodes our Imaginations with Eighteen New Myths and Visions". Each section has further subdivisions where the author expands on specific themes, such as, Creation, Light, Community, the Names of God, Form, Formlessness, Nothingness, the Divine Feminine, Meditation, Mindfulness, Art and Ritual, Joy, Suffering, and Dying, Resurrection and Reincarnation, the Spiritual Warrior and other topics. Each theme is given a thorough examination connecting many different cultural viewpoints and providing unique insights. The author's vast experience in the realm or religion and personal enlightenment, along with his courage to tackle controversial subjects is greatly appreciated and admired.
The author's vision for mankind is very broad and inclusive ... he sees beyond the barriers of dogmatic belief, ritual, and any other differences that separate people. He gets down to *personal* experiences as expressed by the Great Spirit of Life in the vast expanse of time both from the past, in the present and future. The subject is spiritual expression in the lives of humanity and how the many different ideas and experiences have only One source. This is a very highly recommended book for anyone who is interested in comparative religions and spirituality. Also recommended is "One Heart" by Bonnie Louise Kuchler. Her book is an excellent source of quotations and meditations from different religions and spiritual practices. It is a less complex but similar work. Many readers who find Matthew Fox too deep would benefit from her book. Erika Borsos (erikab93)
The Universal Church of God........2004-09-20
Fox is giving the hounds of the status quo a run for their money with this near encyclopedic outline about fighting the good fight. Those with an open mind and heart will find much food for thoughtful contemplation here. Fox admits his book is in no way complete. That it is meant to be suggestive of what future Scriptures will and must contain; wisdom from all Wisdom traditions, a bias in favor of what we have in common; a religious humility that lets traditions other than our own speak for themselves; a use of primary sources; God as experience, not doctrine... Fox succeeds in his stated goal.
This book is an encouragement for fighting the good fight. For becoming a spiritual warrior. Anyone can be a soldier telling the Emperor or their Priest or their Boss what he or she wants to hear. Being a warrior means taking a stand. A warrior has a dignity a soldier never realizes. The warrior fights his holy wars with internal enemies before going on any external jihad. The enemies of personal pride and greed and such. Anyone can be a brute, or a terrorist, in the name of God or Country. Fox points out that even in Islam there is a distinction between a lesser and a greater jihad. The greater jihad being that struggle against one's own demons. As the Sufi mystic Hafiz states, battle without love, can render a person mad. As I like to say, it does not matter what a person believes if they don't have love in their heart.
With that said, "One River, Many Wells" is well worth the read. It is a very good outline to work from regarding one's own spiritual journey. Fox brings to light what Meister Eckhart said 700 years ago, "God is like a great underground river." Thus "One River, Many Wells" is short for One Underground River (Source, God), Many sacred Wells-religious traditions. Again, as I like to say, God speaks to anyone that will listen. To meditate is to dig one's own sacred well. Be still and know that I am God. There are no atheists in Foxholes.
What is he thinking.......2001-11-18
It's hard to tell where Matthew Fox is and where he is going. His books have been a trail of hit and, mostly miss, wanderings.
He recognizes a common source for spiritual reality. And yet he pushes an ecumenical (and even New-Age) agenda to try and mold all existing beliefs into a vision that it cannot be. 'Only if the religions of the world would stand together...' These religions are organizations with their own agendas and systems. Perhaps Fox should listen to the Dali Lami who said that ultimately there is no reconciliation between the *religions* of Buddhism and Christianity. There may be one spirit, but not a single religion or even meaningful coordination of them. (Vivikenanda says that would be very boring.)
Mysticism is the root of all real spiritual experience and Fox knows this. But each religion is an outgrowth (and hence not true development) of the founder who had the mystical experience. The goal of any true (spiritual) path is personal experience. Fox keeps attempting to join all religions (forms) into a great ecumenical mandala and this cannot be done. Personal experience is always unique. It is wisdom that we can see from other beliefs. But Fox keeps on pushing in yet another book.
To be perfectly clear, his inclusion of various spiritual and mystical source in this book is commendable. Everyone else is realizing wisdom of many sources so why not M.Fox. However his approach is always one of 'Look how great what I am saying is'. He claims great visions and breakthroughs for humanity if we will just believe what he is saying. Check his past books. He always does this.
The inclusion and recognition of various sources does not, in his writings, yield meaningful synthesis. This is because there is no coherent meaning to be achieved through shallow or 'deep' ecumenism (joining of outward forms). Neither by dancing, or having estatic sex, or by bringing in ethics or spirituality to work (all themes of his). Neither volumes of writing nor diversity of inputs has meaning on its own. There is no substantial vision presented in his works that rises above religion (form) and beyond his own (elevated) concepts of how things should be. His previous books have not resulted in major changes to society and it does not appear this one will have much effect either.
FINDING IT ALL IN ONE PLACE.......2001-09-03
I had a difficult time getting started in this book. I'd picked it up and put it down several times. But once into it, it was a pleasant surprise. I read about spiritual matters and paths of every religion and each reading talks of it's own spicific area of knowledge and experience. But Matthew Fox picks a subject and covers it from all angles, Jewish, Catholic, Islamic, Hindu, Buddist, Native American, African American, even the Celtic and the Goddess. It's a great book and a great read. And then you know why you like to study them all.
As complete a tome of spiritual knowledge possible.......2000-12-13
Matthew Fox has outdone himself with this work, taking similar themes from the works of mystics spanning diverse traditions. To those who are regular consumers of Fox's writings, this compellation provides a "Bible" for his idea of "Deep Ecumenism". It is as complete a tome of humanity's spiritual knowledge that I have seen on the bookshelf. The best part- Fox has included sources not just from typical religious sources, but from science and literature as well.

A must read for self awareness and spiritual growth........2007-01-19
This book was originally published and a best seller when I was too young to be interested in a book like this. I happened upon the 25th Anniversary Edition while on vacation and could only skim through this before having to return it to the library on our cruise ship. I was excited to order my personal copy of the book and reread the book. Since then my husband and mother-in-law have read the book with my encouragement. This book is life changing and yet simple. It has helped me to understand myself and others much better, and has put into words beautifully my spiritual beliefs. I have never been to a psychiatrist or taken part in any form of therapy but after reading the book I have a much greater appreciation of the process that takes place in good therapy. I will use this book for the rest of my life.
Life Changing.......2006-06-20
You have to read this book. All of them are great but this is the "gateway" to enlightenment.
Starting on the Road Less Traveled.......2005-09-12
This is one of the most important books I think anyone can read. It was recommended to a friend of mine in therapy and I decided to read it as well.
The first sentence in the book is so profound. "Life is difficult." For all of us who struggle and find that life is sometimes tough, this is not a revelation, but when you accept that fact, then you can rise above that concept.
This book spoke to me on so many levels and I am certain that it is a book that I will read many many times. It is making a deep change in my life right now as I peruse it for the first time.
If you are tempted to buy this book, please do and read it with an open mind towards spiritual awakening.
A good book for the young..........2003-11-09
It has been many years since I read this book and reread it. There are definitely some truly wonderful tools, which I have kept with me ever since I read the first line of the book... Life is difficult. As soon as one reflects on this fact and accepts it, it really isn't so difficult any more...
Of course I now realize-after having gone through some very painful experiences since I first read those lines-that this is an over-simplification. Life can and does throw some serious curve balls that really knock the wind right out of you! Realizing and understanding that life is difficult, is not enough of a tool to get you through loosing someone to death... Because there are all kinds of disturbing and hellish emotions that go along with loosing someone that you love so very much.
For anyone who was raised with any kind of a religious background, this book does not provide enough reasons as to why we feel the way we do about life's circumstances and our own roles here on earth. The messages that many-if not most of us have been given as children-from our parents and mentors can be quite confusing and contradictory. These messages stay with us, and as twisted as some of them may be, influence many of our decisions and keep us spinning within that vicious sphere.
If you have bought this book or are thinking of reading it, I say, go ahead and read it. It probably will give you some insight and some good tips on coping with life. But if you are seriously searching and trying to change your life, I would strongly recommend The New Dance of Christ by Anthony T Massimini.
The New Dance of Christ is a wonderfully, insightful book which will really blow your mind! I do wish that the title were different though. I consider myself a Recovering Catholic and no longer even consider myself a Christian. If it weren't for a friend of mine recommending this book to me, I would not have picked it up because of the title.
But don't be swayed by the title! Because even if you don't agree with all of the theories of Massimini, you can't help but be intrigued, fascinated and even altered by his words and facts... Whether you are a Christian, Buddhist, or even an atheist, this book will unlock something inside of you that was there all along but blocked and un-nurtured.
The Uber-Self-Help Book.......2002-01-26
M. Scott Peck's brilliant description of the human condition is the uber-self-help book. If you want to know why the world today (and twenty some-odd years ago when the book was written) is awash with narcisists, liers, responsibility shirkers, loveless relationships, and instant gratification consumers, this is the book for you. And yes, you will find that you exhibit some symptoms of every problem he describes. But how do we combat our own weakness? He explains all. As Dr. Peck says (paraphrased), "Why do people lie? To avoid pain." Simply stated and direct, he writes with a style that exposes the elephant in the room. Every person owes it to themselves to read this book and look in the mirror. This book is not a substitute for therapy, or a spiritual guide. This book is an eye opener, to show you the way towards a healthy mind and spirit...hence the title. Highly recommended.

Wisdom of the Fox.......2003-02-17
I love this book, as I do all of Doctor T's, early works. Rich in battle sceans, magic and sorcery if you like the "Kirpos" and the "Lost Legion" serise you will love this.
I wish Mr. Turtledove would do more of these thing where he creates a new world. I love alternate histrory but sometimes it gets boring and it is good to know that Harry is not a "One theame only" author.
Yes it's a re-issue.......1999-12-17
Wisdom of the Fox combines two of the previous Gerrin the Fox Novels (Werenight & Prince of the North) and doesn't add any new material however they are good stories and gives readers of the later books in the series to complete their collection. And the information that it is a re-print is clearly stated on the publishers web site.
Excellent Book(s) but be sure they're new to you!.......1999-11-22
This is not high-end Turtledove of the "Worldwar" or "Guns of the South" level. Really, the Fox books are more like Heinlein's celebrated junior novels in some ways (though they have sex). The Fox theme is an extended and entertaining study of the abundant benefits of clear thinking and the ability to be self-critical. Adults will enjoy these books -- they're not kiddie novels -- but they have the same Heinleinian themes of competence and moral responsibility. My only caveat: this is two previously published books under one cover. (Prince of the North and Werenight). That's a good deal if you haven't read them, but be sure. I've been burned so many times by repackaged SF stuff that I feel such a warning is in order!
Two already published books in one cover........1999-10-28
This book is Werenight and Prince of the North reisssued as a single volume. I liked both of these books, but the online listing does not make it clear that this is already published material. I was quite dissapointed when I received the book and discovered I had already read it.

The rigor that he brought to his own work he also inflicted on his students, and they and a number of his colleagues honor him with their contributions to this volume.
