5 out of 5 stars A great help!.......2007-09-21

I was recently "downsized" and starting a job search for the first time in 22 years. Fortunately some one recommended this book to me. Beginning a job search can be confusing and overwhelming. This book has great advice for every step of the way.

Part of my company "goodbye package" was a few months of services with a career counseling firm. Many on the concepts from the firm are contained in this book. I have just recommended this book to a friend who is unhappy in her current job.

You've probably heard people talk about the importance of networking/using your network. ("It's all in who you know.") That is a central theme in this book, as it enlightens you on how to make use of the people you know -- friends, family, co-workers, friends of friends, etc. -- to find opportunities and land interviews.

A book worth having.

change his/her job, pick up this enriching and engaging book to guide you through to a healthy
job hunting experience.

Great book to use as a refresher, but I found it to be a compilation of stories and anecdotes that were mostly common sense.

This book is a helpful tool in career choice making. It is especially insightful for self evaluation during the career search. This book helps the seeker to become more organized and narrow the search to an area best adapted for the individual.

This book was a requirement for one of my master's level courses dealing with career development. We did the flower exercise and it was quite revealing. The work book which was designed to accompany this book deals precisely with this exercise. I would definitely recommend this book to those exiting high school, community college, trade school, or college at any level.

This is a funny, well-written book, but more importantly, he does an excellent job in helping the reader find the job that best suits their interests, passions and talents.

Book Description

Competition for the best teaching jobs is becoming more intense. Since publication of the first edition, when it was mainly the most desirable schools that were deluged by applications, the economic climate has made the teacher market more competitive across the board, and is changing hiring practices.

Now extensively revised, this book maintains its place as the most up-to-date book available on job hunting for teachers. The authors cover changes in the educational marketplace; the new mandates about standardized testing and public reporting of student achievement–and what they mean for applicants; how new certification standards and schools’ requirements affect career changers; the growing acceptance of on-line applications and electronic portfolios; and provide additional advice for teachers applying to change schools or districts.

This is also the only guide written by school administrators. Offering the insights and experience of two authors who do the hiring, it details a step-by-step program for taking charge of your teaching career.

How to Get the Teaching Job You Want enables you to:

* Match your unique talents to the needs of a particular school
* Craft effective cover letters and resumes, using models that address the specific needs of college graduates, teachers changing schools, returning teachers and career changers
* Make effective on-line applications
* Leverage your achievements as an experienced teacher–or, for graduates or career changers, student teaching, substitute teaching, volunteer work or content knowledge–into a job offer
* Locate jobs on-line and discover valuable information about schools, including test results, educational philosophy and names of key administrators
* Design a portfolio in book or electronic format to showcase your abilities
* Practice interview skills using 100 questions taken from real job interviews
* Apply proven strategies for a variety of interview formats, including high stress interviews and performance interviews
* Address controversial questions during interviews

This book covers procedures for applying to elementary, middle and high schools; public, independent, and parochial schools; as well as international and boarding schools. Anecdotes recounting the experiences of real candidates looking for jobs illustrate key points. Access to the authors’ web site ensures that you will stay current in a changing job market.

This is a vital book for teachers and aspiring teachers who want to achieve their career goals. It will also be invaluable for guidance counselors, psychologists, librarians and other school professionals.

5 out of 5 stars Very Helpful.......2007-08-10

I bought this book and "Teacher Interviews" at the same time. I thought they were both good. Each book provided me with information and helped me to refine my cover letters and resumes. After I bought these two books, I was called for an interview from the first school district I applied to. I am now in the third round of interviews for that district. Especially helpful in this book was the four most common errors of cover letters. I have started a database of "scripts" to insert into my cover letters or resume based on the needs of the school district to which I am applying which matches my accomplishments with their needs. I also liked the organization ideas that "How to Get the Teaching Job You Want" recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent resourse.......2006-04-24

When I first began my search for a permanent teaching job, I picked up this book. I found it extremely helpful in constructing a teaching resume. The trouble with the standard resume format is that the rules do not apply to the teaching profession. After following their guidelines for my resume, I was granted an interview with the school I now teach at. This book then prepared me for the barrage of interviews that followed and I, thankfully, knew what to expect. This book was definitely an asset. What better testimonial than someone who has secured a teaching job by using it?

3 out of 5 stars Interview Info........2005-05-13

This book is helpful if you need to know how to organize your job search and keep track of documents. It contains a list of interview questions (but that is available on the internet). Since the book is written by administrators it would be helpful if they would give an idea as to the answers administrators want to hear, unfortuneatley the book falls short in this area.
The other area the book could improve on is demonstration lessons, what administrators are looking for. I am sure this varies from school to school but it would still be helpful to hear more about the demonstration lesson phase of the interview process.

5 out of 5 stars A practical resource to finding job openings.......2004-03-04

Now in its newly and extensively revised second edition, How To Get The Teaching Job You Want by Robert Feirsen (Deputy Superintendent, Manhasset, New York) and Seth Weitzman Principal, Hommocks Middle School, Mamaroneck Union Free School District, New York), is a straightforward, "user friendly" career guide for graduates newly entering the education field, as well as classroom teachers who are changing school or district job assignments. A practical resource to finding job openings; crafting a polished cover letter and resume; performing well in the job interview; and so much more, How To Get The Teaching Job You Want is an absolute "must-have" for anyone seriously pursuing teaching-related employment in this modern era of constant school related job market shifts.

Book Description

In the last four years, the United States has lost 2.3 million jobs—the most in any four-year period since Herbert Hoover and the Great Depression. Currently, millions of workers are unemployed both in the United States and worldwide and the problem isn't likely to abate anytime soon. In the 2005 edition of his legendary job-hunting book, WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE? Richard Bolles presents a detailed plan for facing this societal problem head-on, declaring that we must each begin by mastering this new world for ourselves and then, once empowered, share our knowledge with others to empower the world.

In PARACHUTE 2005, Bolles offers a completely new book for this uncertain job market, laying out a simple, step-by-step plan for finding meaningful work and mission despite our economy's jobless recovery. Featuring fresh explanations of old concepts and the introduction of new ideas, Bolles defines the distinctions between "resume jobs" and "grapevine jobs," between "passive job-hunting" and "active job-hunting," between "weak ties" and "strong ties," and much more. These are not normal times. And this is not your normal PARACHUTE. It faces squarely the "workquake" that is shaking up the job market around the world, and gives not only simple steps but steady hope.

5 out of 5 stars Best Career book I've read.......2007-01-08

If you want to know how to get a job, this is the book to have. This book doesn't just give you a 1 dimensional to do list (i.e. wear a navy suit to the interview), it delves into different factors and explanations behind the job market. He also gives you practical pointers and great advice.

great read.

5 out of 5 stars In late 2006, this book is still current...........2006-11-03

I'm trying to imagine what might be in the 2007 edition that isn't in this one, and what comes to mind for me is that this book doesn't have any advice about not sabotaging your job hunt by saying things better left unsaid or showing things better left unseen on your MySpace page.

But the things in this book are very pertinent to people not just trying to find a job, but trying to find more meaningful work, work they can do with joy, work they can do where their deep gladness and the world's deep hunger meet. It should be noted that this is a book that should not only be read, but should be done as well. It is full of exercises that help to identify the components of this more meaningful work, either as an employee or an entrepreneur. If you wish to get the maximum value out of this book, you must do the exercises.

I hadn't really considered this, but on further review it seems kind of obvious. Bolles writes that sometimes, the only thing employers have to go on, as to whether a prospective employee will be a good employee, is the quality of their job search. How much do they know about the company and its work? Are they respecting the interviewer's time? Are they a job beggar or a solution to a problem?

Maybe one way of summarizing this book is, if you want more meaningful work, you need to be a more meaningful person doing a more meaningful search. This book will show you how.

4 out of 5 stars Good book but...........2006-03-07

First off, note that this book is primarily for people who are looking for a new employer. While it has some info that could also be applied to people looking to be their own boss, the bulk of the book applies to topics that would not apply to entrepreneurs (how to interview, how to do your resume, how to negotiate salary, etc.). Also, in the section of the book that talks about trying to figure out your purpose (ideal career) in life, it was a little too religious for my taste, making references to God, and quoting passages from the bible. That said, in general this is a handy reference book for anyone looking to make a career change.

5 out of 5 stars First Book To Buy For Job Hunting.......2005-10-12

"What Color Is Your Parachute" is the first book you need if finding a job is your goal. If you've not bought this yet, you haven't started looking.

Richard Bolles is the expert. His books sell because they are fresh each year with insight, purpose and ideas for determining what job you should do, and how to get it.

I used "Parachute" to get my first job. It continues to influence me today, as I job hunt again.

Thoroughly practical, Bolles asks you questions about your mission in life. His belief is that just getting a job -- even ones you are good at -- won't be a wise decision in the long haul. He helps you see your passions mixed with skills and experience, and guides you to getting their. Though it is hardly a self-help book, it is far more useful than the ones clogging up the Top 10 list.

He keeps you accountable. Finding a job is your job if that's what you say you want. And if you aren't working, he won't let you make excuses -- you've got the time. Either you are looking or you aren't. Dr. Phil could take a note from Bolles' direct yet congenial style.

Don't bother with the hardcover. You need the paperback. This is not a sit-on-the-shelf book, but a get-down-to-business book, and you'll appreciate the flexibility while at work or on the train.

I fully recommend, "What Color Is Your Parachute" by Richard Nelson Bolles.

5 out of 5 stars Must have book for every job seeker; insightful........2005-09-13

Ok. This is the best of the best. Worth full price. I don't care so much for the exercises and things like that. But the book can be summed up as a three in one.

It covers:

Job seeking (main aspect)
Interviewing
Salary Negotiation

As well as identifying your true passion and learn more about the type of jobs you would really like to do. People that succeed generally like what they do so this book is a great resource that will help you identify what you love to do. When work is enjoyable, you tend to do better, get promoted etc.

I am a college grad and this book is worthy of being used in a college environment to teach a class that would cost far more than the price of this book.

No matter what field of work you do, get this book if you are looking for a job. I guarantee you will learn about yourself and identify some of your inner goals and desires.

Book Description

"WHAT COLOR IS YOUR PARACHUTE? HOT AGAIN, 30 YEARS AFTER DEBUT." So ran the headline this past October in the Seattle Times. Actually, it has been "hot"—the best-selling job-hunting book in the world—year after year, for more than three decades now, so much so that it is referred to as "the job-hunters' bible." Each year it is updated, and sometimes vastly rewritten, by the author, giving first-time and veteran readers alike something new to discover. For those who have not read an updated version in recent years, this is a reminder of why, in the words of Fortune magazine, "PARACHUTE remains the gold standard of career guides."

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Soar over a universal obstacle........2007-05-12

I've studied this book thoroughly because I really want to master the job-hunt. Just imagine having the ability to get paid to do whatever it is that you most enjoy at the moment. I'm not referring to momentary pleasures like eating ice cream or having sex, but things that you could enjoy doing for weeks or months. And that's the trick I discovered while reading this book. It's more effective to follow the advice of the book if you think of it as ways to get a job that you would enjoy doing for a while and not necessarily for the rest of your life. When you think of your whole life it becomes next to impossible to decide on something. It's easier to decide on a job when in your mind it's just something you could see yourself doing temporarily.

The book is long and full of useful information you can put to use immediately. For example, things to say when negotiating salary.

It has titles and web addresses of a bunch of non-fiction books and alternative search engines.

It is written by someone with hard science degrees from both Harvard and MIT.

It has lengthy exercises that show you how to do research on yourself and on organizations.

It does not claim to help you gain a job overnight.

It does say that even if you work full-time at finding a job it may still take many months (depending on the job of course).

It directs you to a companion website [...]that is a compilation of the best job-hunting info and websites on the web.

You may want to check out Paul Graham's essay "How To Do What You Love" for more on this theme.

5 out of 5 stars Life changing classic.......2006-07-04

Rather than following the simplistic approach of "100 useful tips that will get you hired", 'What Color Is Your Parachute' gives in-depth explanation how things work and what kind of decisions you must take to get not just any job, but a job you really want.

As people here mentioned, this book is definitely not for everybody. But if you get it right, you'll get much better control over your career. To me it helped to switch career in a direction I wasn't sure was possible at all.

Some of even vital chapters were not very relevant to me - in particular, (note to the author) US resume is written in a very different way than Australian or European. However, it didn't render the author's advices unusable.

The book is really trying to be culturally neutral; unlike many other equivalents, it is relevant not only for American job market but just about anywhere.

4 out of 5 stars A good book, but not for everyone.......2006-01-31

If you're contemplating a major career change, Bolles should be somewhere up at the top of your reading list. His strong suit is helping people figure out what kind of work they want to do, and he's certainly one of the best authors on that topic. Some of that material is in this book, and more in others.

His general job search advice is also very useful, but a bit rambling and certainly not systematic. I've talked to lots of people who've read Parachute. Some love it and say it changed their lives and would give it a six-star rating. Others don't like it at all and ask why everyone's making such a fuss over it. You don't need to have the latest edition of Parachute, since the annual changes are usually minor.

In parachute, Bolles now and then includes references to his Christian beliefs (He's an Episcopal minister.), but generally sticks to the work of job hunting. In case you don't already know, this is the best selling job hunting book ever written, popular for over 30 years.

4 out of 5 stars The venerable classic.......2005-08-21

Although this is the legendary bible for job hunters and has now been around for three decades (and two different centuries and millenia now :-)), I have to admit that I found it only marginally useful. There's some good advice here, and a lot of interesting data and info relating to jobs and careers, but much of the author's approach is very touchy-feely and relates to analyzing and determining exactly what you want in a job, and then going after it--assuming such a "dream job" exists at all.

I think it's safe to say that in the current employment environment, such jobs don't exist and the reality is, what with more jobs having been lost overseas than any other time in the last 65 years, including possibly the Great Depression, that you will probably have to settle for considerably less than your hoped-for dream job. Although I certainly agree with Bolles that one must find one's passion and pursue it if one can, since if you're doing it 40-80 hours a week you may as well do what you enjoy, the reality is that is more difficult now than ever before.

I still give the book four stars for effort and for its historical importance, I guess you'd say, and there is a lot of good info and data on the job and career area that this book brings under one cover. Some of the ideas are useful, and Bolles's many checklists and questions may get you thinking in a more creative way about your choice of a job, how to strategize and go about finding a job, and how to zero in on exactly what you want. But overall this famous volume on getting a job really doesn't address the issue of just how hard it is to actually find one, especially for those of us who are now over 50 and have been put out of work by the recent trend of jobs going overseas.

3 out of 5 stars All Self-Help Books Look The Same To Me.......2005-06-12

I'm not sure which edition of this book I read. The edition I read had a section on what employers are looking for, which I enjoyed, but it had no section on career fairs.

Actually, I didn't read the entire book, just skimmed through it, reading certain sections. Perhaps this will not make my review credible, but I feel I still have a right to express my opinion as long as I make everyone aware of the circumstances.

The main thing I noticed about this book is that it contained a statistic saying that 50% of all jobs are obtained by walk-ins. My guess is most of these jobs are at places where you make minimum wage with no benefits. I've tried calling and walking in on some companies only to be told, "You have to apply on the internet. Go home."

It remains true that networking is the best way to get jobs. I however, have an unfriendly personality and would rather work flipping burgers than do a job search by attending parties and making friends. I will do information interviews though, since they're strictly business. I have to give credit to this book for giving me that idea.

But like all self-help books, none are miracle workers. It's not what you read that will get you what you want, it's hard, efficient work that will give you the opportunity to go for what you want. I believe this book makes a statement of that nature. Most people in life don't get to do what they really want, probably because they go down a path in college, specializing in some discipline and if they don't like the line of work, they're in trouble. It's tough to change disciplines, since it's very costly, and many are already in debt as it is. They decide it's best to just settle, and as long as a job doesn't break my back or make me hate life every day, I guess I'll be content with just settling.

This book did inspire me to combine all of the talents and enjoyments I think I have and put them into a project that has a (very small) chance of being profitable. Since I had the resources to do it, I went for it. But like most people, I'll probably end up working at a job I don't like very much to pay bills, looking for better opportunities during my spare time. Most people don't need a book to help them figure that out.

This book also tells you to go after something that your heart really desires, since that will give you an edge over the competition. Good advice. There's a lot of competition out there. This book really deserves more than the rating I give it, probably a 3.5, or a 4, but because I don't like seeing all of the 5-star reviews, I kicked it down a notch. I think self-help books always promise more than they deliver.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Trading Places.......2007-10-03

I'm not a big reader of fantasy books, but I'm thrilled to have discovered this wonderfully poignant tale of fate, love, redemption, loss, and sorcery. Sharon Shinn received the William Crawford Award for Achievement in Fantasy for THE SHAPE-CHANGER'S WIFE, a tale of two wizards: Aubrey -- a student of the magical arts -- and Glyrenden -- an all powerful shape-changer. Aubrey is sent to learn the greatest secret -- the ability to manipulate shapes -- but little does he know that he'll come away learning not only this elusive bit of magic but he'll also find life's truly greatest secret: to find love.

I'm hesitant to give anything further away because this is the kind of novel that's easily spoiled. It's hard to see this tale as a fantasy novel -- as I've said, I've not read much of that genre -- because it's essentially a love story wrapped up in a world of fantasy ... mostly meaning wizards, kings, sorcery, etc. At a glance, the casual reader might dismiss WIFE as a genre splash and pick up something else; all I can say is that one truly great and inspirational read will be missed.

Also to the tale's benefit is the fact that it's a brisk read; these 200+ pages whisk by -- much like many of life's lesser affairs of the heart -- and it's easy to stay as captivated as the young wizard is with newfound love.

4 out of 5 stars Simple and Lovely.......2006-08-30

This was a very simple, lovely tale and a quick read as well. The author Sharon Shinn, has an elegant way with her prose, but I do have some complaints to make. First off, this is obviously a first work, the characters are not very well fleshed out and the love story makes no sense at first. Its just as if BOOM! the protagonist falls in love, with no real explanation as to how or why. Secondly, I could see the climax coming from a mile away, in fact I could see all the main reveals in the tale. Perhaps that is because I have read too much fantasy fiction over the years, my mind starts working like a fantasy fan.
However, all that aside, I really did like this book, it was a quick read and did not bog me down in mundane, tiring details. I look forward to reading some of Shinns' other novels.

The Shape-Changer's Wife by Sharon Shinn

Primarily for: Adults

When the young apprentice Aubrey wants to learn transmogrification, his master sends him to the shape-changer Glyrenden. But Glyrenden is not home; his wife Lilith allows Aubrey to stay. Lilith displays no love for her husband nor her surroundings, yet will not leave. Intrigued, Aubrey examines the household more closely when the shape-changer returns--the charming yet mercurial Glyrenden, his gruff and scuttling servants--and discovers that nothing is as it seems, least of all Lilith.

The Shape-Changer's Wife explores themes discussed in Bernard Shaw's Pygmalion--what if someone had the power to create or transform another human being? What makes us human? And it echoes the struggles with power explored in Patricia McKillip's the Forgotten Beasts of Eld: what is the difference between knowledge and power? What is an acceptable use of power? But its suffusion of magic and layers of illusion are peculiarly her own, as are the characters we recognize beneath them.

5 out of 5 stars A little mystery with a dash of fantasy.......2005-09-08

I have read everything Sharon Shinn has written. In some cases twice. I was dying to get a hold of her first novel, The Shape-Changer's Wife. How could I pass it up? The hero is a young apprentice wizard who is sent by his mentor to study with the powerful wizard, Glyrenden. Lilith is his wife. A mystery all her own. Aubrey is determined to figure out who she is...or more to the point...what she is. If you enjoy this book, this is a great jumping off point for any of Sharon's other books. I love her imaginative way describing her characters. You get a real sense of who they are and connect with them. I am glad I discovered Sharon Shinn quite by accident.

5 out of 5 stars Delightful Tale.......2005-06-17

The young magician Aubrey has learned almost all he can from his mentor Cyril, so he is sent to apprentice with the powerful shape-changer Glynrenden. He is warned to be wary of the wizard, and soon notices that the situation is far from normal at Glynrenden's home in the woods. Most strange of all is the mage's disturbing and bewitching wife, Lilith, who watches everything impassively with her luminous green eyes.

Aubrey learns lessons of love and hate, right and wrong, on top of the art of shape-changing during his time as Glynrenden's apprentice. A deftly woven tale, reminiscent of the fairy tales I loved as a child, full of nature and morals. Of course, the reader figures out the truth about Lilith long before Aubrey, but this did nothing to detract from my enjoyment of the story.

I am in love with Sharon Shinn's writing, but this book is not for you if you like a story with more action and whiz-bang.

Jane Whitefield, Thomas Perry's Native American "guide," has recently married Dr. Carey McKinnon and is now retired from helping people disappear from danger. But when her husband's old mentor, a world-famous plastic surgeon wanted by the police for a murder he didn't commit, turns up in Carey's emergency room, Jane steps back into the shadowy world of runners and hunters one more time. In this fourth outing in Edgar-winning Perry's fascinating and innovative series, Jane discovers that someone else is using her name and reputation to take fugitives out of the world, but for very different, and diabolical, purposes. Whitefield's Seneca heritage, plus her unique talents, make her a novel and compelling heroine, and Perry's masterful storytelling makes the most of Whitefield in this suspenseful page-turner. --Jane Adams

Book Description

Jane Whitefield, legendary half-Indian shadow guide who spirits hunted people away from certain death, has never had a client like Dr. Richard Dahlman. A famous plastic surgeon who has dedicated his life to healing, the good doctor hasn't a clue why stalkers are out for his blood. But he knows Jane Whitefield's name--and that she is his only hope. Once again Jane performs her magic, leading Dahlman in a nightmare flight across America, only a heartbeat ahead of pursuers whose leader is a dead ringer for Jane: a raven-haired beauty who has stolen her name, reputation, and techniques--not to save lives, but to destroy them. . . .

5 out of 5 stars Jane Whitefield is Back on the Job.......2003-10-10

Native American (she's part Seneca) Jane Whitefield has stopped guiding people in danger to safe locations because of a promise she made her new husband Dr. Carey McKinnon. She'd spent the better part of a decade helping those in danger disappear and take on new lives, getting them new papers and teaching them how to stay hidden, now she's finished with that. Or is she?

Now it's her husband of all people who wants her to get back in the saddle and take up her dangerous work once more. His mentor, a famous plastic surgeon, is close to making a medical break though, but he's wanted for a murder he didn't commit. While helping him Jane learns that a group of face-changers are using her name, techniques and underground reputation to prey on innocents in trouble and destroy their lives rather than save them. Jane has to unmask them and put them out of business before they harm anyone else.

I didn't think it possible, but with each new Jane Whitefield book, Thomas Perry creates an even more frightening and exciting scenario than in the previous book. The characters are always fleshed out and believable. Mr. Perry is always worth the time you spend reading his works.

3 out of 5 stars Not up to his usual standards.......1999-12-21

I've read all of the Jane Whitefield novels so far and this is the first one I found just a bit tedious. However, that said, Perry is still a better mystery writer than 90% of the authors of this genre. My feeling was the book went on a little too long. I like, and have always liked, the utter competence of Jane Whitefield. There doesn't seem to be much that fazes her or puts her off her stride. Not a bad book but the others in this series are just a little tighter and more suspenseful

3 out of 5 stars Not as good as the previous.......1999-12-11

Thomas Perry is an amazing writer, but somehow I didn't feel that this latest venture meets his high standards. There is the usual Jane Whitefield dance with her evil pursuers, close calls, and a subtext that you don't figure out till the end. Neverthless, the fact that Jane is performing her magic not out of her devotion to her work, but because she is somewhat reluctantly pushed into it, robs the story of its customary magic. Thomas, let Jane live out a quiet life with her husband, and write about Jane's earlier adventures instead.

The only thing I can't figure out is - how did Thomas Perry go from writing amazing and humorous crime noir like "Metzger's Dog" and the "Butcher's Boy", to the somber (but no less readable) Jane Whitefield?

5 out of 5 stars Thomas Perry is the best I can't wait for his next book........1999-10-07

Anyone who likes suspense should read this and all of Thomas Perry's other books you will not be disappointed they are hard to put down.

    Book Description

A 192-page book, Real-Resumes for Career Changers shows actual resumes and cover letters that helped real people change fields or industries. At a time when research shows that most working people have three distinctly different careers, at last there is a book which reveals the successful techniques involved in changing fields. Real-Resumes for Career Changers is based on the philosophy that an effective career-change resume must build bridges to new opportunities. The Table of Contents is designed to show individuals in varying degrees of career change and seeking different goals: finding a new career after motherhood, finding a new product to sell or represent, finding a completely different type of work to do, seeking a change but staying in the same industry, changing fields with absolutely no idea whats next, changing fields with a pretty good idea about whats ahead, and changing from self-employment to something totally different. Each resume and its companion cover letter shown is a picture of a successful career change, and the theory behind the book is that a picture is worth a thousand words. Real-Resumes Series editor Anne McKinney believes strongly that career-change resumes are the most unusual and most creative because they are selling potential rather than experience.

All resumes in the book are one page in length, and all resumes are accompanied by a companion cover letter. The book begins with a brief section explaining the most effective job-hunting approachthe direct approach. This unique how-to book does not simply tell how to write an effective career-change resume and cover letter; it shows how in page after page of meaty examples.

Other titles in the series being released in the year 2000 are: Real-Resumes for Teachers, Real-Resumes for Students, Real-Resumes for Sales, and Real Essays for College & Grad School.

But now they are facing a disquieting new development: the terrifying Chief Psychologist, Dr. O'Mara, has been promoted to head of the hospital.Worse, he's been given the job on a temporary basis, for just as long as it takes to train his own replacement. After that, he is up for mandatory retirement. Nobody at Sector General can begin to imagine what they'll do without him--assuming they last long enough to find out.

5 out of 5 stars More About O'Mara.......1999-04-01

Until *Mind Changer* came along, I hadn't realized how much I'd missed by not knowing more about the "nasty" Major O'Mara, even though I liked him. It's time for Major O'Mara to retire, and this book, like O'Mara himself, moves from the present to the past, and back. We learn more about the early days of Sector General and O'Mara's role in bringing about many items that are familiar to the series. Although the final revelation was obvious before chapter 15, that didn't spoil the book. Everything leading up to the end was interesting. I think anyone who cares about O'Mara will be pleased at his fate. [Note to the publisher: On p.217, full paragraph one, Padre Lorien is named, but the context makes it obvious that Padre Carmody is meant. If that IS an error, you may wish to correct it for the paperback.] Ann E. Nichols

WELCOME AGAIN TO THE MANY WORLDS OF HONOR

Lady Dame Honor Harrington -- starship captain, admiral, Steadholder, and Duchess -- has spent decades defending the Star Kingdom of Manticore against all comers. Along the way, she has become the legend known as "the Salamander" from her habit of always being where the fire is hottest...and also a national bestseller (Ashes of Victory: #7, The Wall Street Journal).

But it's a big universe, and Honor's actions affect a lot of lives, not all of them human. And their actions affect her -- a lesson "Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington" learns years before rising to command rank, when a desperate battle against "pirates" who aren't quite what they seem begins her brilliant career.

Closer to home, in "Changer of Worlds," a secret that the alien treecats have kept from their human friends for hundreds of years is about to come out...and completely change the relationship between the two species forever.

Meanwhile, Eric Flint weighs in with "From the Highlands." Honor can't be everywhere, so when the People's Republic of Haven tries to stage a political assassination on Earth, Anton Zilwicki -- husband of one of the Star Kingdom's most revered military martyrs, and father of a young woman who is clearly a chip off the old block -- steps into the breach...and takes the opportunity to settle some old scores along the way.

And finally, Esther McQueen and Oscar Saint-Just square off for their final confrontation in Noveau Paris in "Nightfall."

4 out of 5 stars Volume Three of Weber's Worlds of Honor .......2005-12-10

Changer of Worlds is Volume Three of Worlds of Honor series featuring short stories set in the universe of Weber's Honor Harrington series. This volume opens with Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington, a short novel about Honor's probationary voyage as a midshipwoman. Midshipwoman Harrington finds herself facing Silesian pirates and a superior officer hellbent on destroying her. Weber's story Changer of Worlds is largely about treecats Nimitz and Samantha, with Honor putting in a cameo. Eric Flint checks in with From the Highlands (the only story in this volume not written by Weber. This story is of Anton Zilwicki, a Manticoran captain whose daughter is kidnapped and his efforts to rescue her. This is my favorite story in this whole volume. Changer of Worlds closes with Weber's Nightfall, about the internal struggle within the Havenite power structure during the last days of the Rob S. Pierre government depicting a battle of wills between Pierre and Admiral Esther McQueen. Altogether, Changer of Worlds is another fine volume of stories set within the Honorverse, deepening the reader's understanding of the universe of Weber's HH series, and I look forward to reading Volume Four: The Service of the Sword.

    5 out of 5 stars A Splendid Mishmash.......2005-06-24

In this third collection of short stories set in the Honor Harrington Universe, Weber takes a bigger hand himself. He is the author of three out of the four stories of the volume. Again, this is filler material that serves as window dressing for the main series of novels but it is no less entertaining for that. In fact, I think this is the best of the 3 collections thus far.

Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington - This is a piece by Weber. It tells the tale of Harrington's first tour of duty in space and clearly shows foreshadowing of the character she is to become. She is confident, capable and does not suffer fools lightly. In this story, her ship is deployed to Silesia to suppress pirates. The pirates turn out to be more powerful than bargained for and it is the young midshipwoman who saves the day.

Changer of Worlds - This is another work from Weber. It is a short story which details the treecat's decision to colonize other worlds with the help of their humans. The central characters are Nimitz and his mate, Samantha with Honor Harrington putting in a cameo.

From the Highlands - This story is from Eric Flint and takes place in the capital of the Solarian Confederation: Chicago. It seems that 2 thousand years have done nothing to mitigate the existence of an underworld. The story concerns a plot by a rogue Peep SS agent to kidnap the daughter of a Manticorian intelligence agent as part of a plot to cover up his own shady dealings. What he does not count on is the resourcefulness of the young girl, the tenacity of her father and the presence of another Peep who is so morally outraged that he takes a hand in the situation. This is a good adventure story.

Nightfall - Another story by Weber, this one seemed at first to be a plagiarism of part of one of his later HH novels. It tells the story of the battle of wills between Peep Adm. Esther McQueen and the Rob S. Pierre government. As it turns out, some of the verbiage is lifted directly from the other book but there is a wealth of additional story as well. It chronicles the events of McQueen's coup in much more detail than the novel.

These are all solid stories and well worth the time.

4 out of 5 stars If you liked this one you'll like The Warmasters..........2004-02-17

mainly because, with no accompanying notice, Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington is repeated verbatim in that volume! yep, 50% of the "new" book is recycled. Oh it's a decent enough story but I'm uncertain it deserves being repeated in less than two years, especially with no notice that it was, in fact, being republished. So if you've previously read The Warmasters, perhaps in the hardcover that came out 2 months after Changer came out in paperback (ouch) make sure you want the other stories.

Changer is a decent collection in setting some of the series backstory: but Baen has some explaining to do about it's recycling IMHO.

5 out of 5 stars A must for Honor Harrington fans!.......2003-10-23

For all you Honor Harrington fans out there, listen up! This is a collection of stories worth reading! Most are written by David Weber, himself. The first story, my personal favorite, is about Honor and her quirky pet treecat before the first book of the series began! It was Honor on her first ship tour as Midshipwoman!

This book is a must for all Honor Harrington fans! Not just a bunch of short stories either. Each story is like a small book. Don't expect ten pages per story, expect seventy-five or more! An exciting book that will tame the hunger of fans until Mr. Weber gets the next Honor story out. Highly recommended reading!

5 out of 5 stars Again, the Worlds of Honor.......2003-10-15

Changer of Worlds (2001) is the third anthology in the Worlds of Honor series. This volume contains four stories, three by David Weber and one by Eric Flint. Only the first story is about Honor herself.

Ms. Midshipwoman Harrington by David Weber describes Honor's middy cruise with the HMS War Maiden on pirate-chasing duty in Silesia. It proves to be rather more interesting than usual and the Salamander finds herself in the hottest of combat for the first time.

Changer of Worlds by David Weber tells what happens one afternoon while Honor babysits the kits for Nimitz and Samantha.

From the Highlands by Eric Flint discloses the actual events underlying the Manpower Incident in Chicago on Old Earth. It all starts when somebody kidnaps Anton Zilwicki's daughter Helen. That was their first mistake, but hardly the last.

Nightfall by David Weber depicts the last days of the Rob Pierre government and the consequences of making assumptions.

These tales fill in some of the backstory and show other points of view within the main story arc. They enrich the universe and allow minor characters in the main story to take center stage.

Highly recommended for Honor Harrington fans and anyone else who enjoys science fiction stories about spatial combat, alien societies, special ops or political intrigue.

    Book Description

Currency markets, worth almost $2 trillion per day in trade, link the world together. Yet few people know how they work and why they are prone to instability and bouts of panic. This book, neither a technical manual nor a get-rich-quick tract, takes the reader on a guided tour of the places, the machines, the circuitry and the people involved in moving the world’s money. From the simple to the complex, currency traders, market analysts, money managers and payments systems architects show their workplaces and reveal their day-to-day experiences. The book will give the reader a graphic picture of the geographical and structural organization of global currency markets and the people who operate them. The tour through the volatile and rapidly evolving world of the money changers provides a basic orientation for deciphering complex causes of yet unforeseen financial events.

5 out of 5 stars Highly recommended. General readers; all levels of undergraduates. --- IngoWalter, March 2007, Choice .......2007-05-12

The full review in March 2007, CHOICE, written by Ingo Walter, an eminent scholar in the field of international finance, was helpful to me. Here are some excerpts:
"This is a nontechnical exploration into the mechanics of the foreign exchange market, which Williams (Guilford College) nicely motivates by starting with an ordinary retail transaction--an ATM withdrawal of local currency in a foreign country--and tracing it through the wholesale foreign exchange markets to show what actually happens. In doing so, the author provides an intuitive way to explore the most important and arguably the most efficient market in the world, which makes international trade, investment, and financial transfers possible......The discussion is up-to-date, and the use of dialogue makes the book very accessible to the intelligent but uninformed reader. Summing Up: Highly recommended. General readers; all levels of undergraduates." --- Ingo Walter, Seymour Milstein Professor of Finance, Corporate Governance and Ethics at the Stern School of Business, New York University.

5 out of 5 stars A fine introduction to currency markets for students and the interested general reader.......2007-03-12

Robert G. Williams has written an entertaining and informative book about how the world currency markets work. He starts with a story about a summer trip he and some students took to Europe and the impact the fluctuations in the local currency against the dollar impacted their budget for the trip and how he was able to manage that best through smarter currency exchange.

The rest of the book has him taking us through the different aspects of currency trade, the size of the market, who the players are, the role of computers and software versus people exchanging currency on the trading floor, the various philosophies of how these markets work, and how currency exchange affects you and me even without our knowing it.

I don't know if all the conversations he discusses in the book are devices to keep what could have been a dry subject more entertaining or if he is doing some very good reporting. In the larger sense, it doesn't matter because we read the book for the information the author shares with us. That he also makes it quite readable is quite an achievement. There are a helpful number of charts, tables, and graphs. They do not get in the way and are all pretty easy to understand.

This is a very good introduction to these important and quite huge markets (bigger than you would likely guess) for the student and the interested general reader. Since the news often talks about the movements of currency and how this or that is over or undervalued, you might want to bolster your own understanding of what is really going on rather than the vague arm waving of the journalists.

This interesting book is a great place to start.

5 out of 5 stars The Money Changers - Accessible and interesting for the lay reader.......2007-03-10

Reading The Money Changers: A Guided Tour Through Global Currency Markets by Robert Williams was both exceptionally educational and entertaining. I am an art professor and not knowledgeable about economics. However, I have traveled a lot overseas and have always been confused about rates of foreign exchange and why they move up and down in a way that seems so unpredictable. This book explained a great deal about why but also explored how this market works and how it has changed with the introduction of the Euro. For someone who is not an expert The Money Changers is challenging to read because the complexities of the economics are there; but the writing is exceptionally clear and the stories about the people who work in these markets are so engaging that the book kept my interest to the end.

4 out of 5 stars Great overview of the currency markets.......2007-01-14

Definitely not a technical treatise like the books written by Boris Schlossberg or Kathy Lien, but does a wonderful job of giving those interested in the fx markets a toe-hold on how the world's biggest capital market operates. I personally enjoyed the interview section with fx traders and currency strategists at JPMorgan tremendously. However, reading the detailed explanation on how the CHIPs settlement system works was slightly tedious.

4 out of 5 stars truly "a guided tour through global currency markets".......2006-10-09

This book, as the preface states, "is not a technical manual for
business professionals or a tract on how to get rich betting on
currencies. Rather, it is a guided tour of the places, the machines,
the circuitry, and the people involved in moving world money".
Given this is what the book is about, it does a wonderful job.
The author is obviously very well read and intelligent and
probably ought to be teaching with Lawrence Summers and Robert J.
Barrow in Cambridge, MA. However, I must confess that I cannot
agree with the author in the final pages of the book where he
tries to make the case for financial austerity given Britain's
currency crisis from 1958-1968. He calls this section of the
book "Long-run lessons for the dollar's loss of hegemony", and
caused me to remember the Jimmy Carter rhetoric that American's
need to do with less. On pages 233-234 the author states the
United States needs to cut back on borrowing from foreign sources
and states "It would mean a change in relative living standards
for people in the United States, but it would not be the end of
the world". It is a sad ending for what was a great book up until
that point. And from my point of view is not correct as long as
the Japanese continue at their current savings rate and as long as
the Japanese continue to devalue the yen vis-a-vis the dollar.
