5 out of 5 stars For princesses young and old.......2007-07-30

Just for the record, I happen to be 24 years old. A coworker brought this book in to show the office, and all of the women adored it. I bought two copies - one for my little cousin and one for myself just for fun (at five years old, I was utterly convinced of my regal status).
I read all of the reviews posted prior to buying, and I think most are pretty accurate. The book itself is beautiful - loaded with inserts, envelopes with surprises and lovely illustrations (some more beautiful than others).
I was aware of the criticism of the books alleged "insensitivity" and pettiness. But for a children's book, it does a great job of interjecting some multiculturalism (has a Princesses of the World section) and a nice message at the end that "being a true princess is about treating all living creatures with kindness and generosity and about accepting people for who they are...."
As an adult, I was especially fond of the "How to Recognize a Fairy Godmother section" and the book's advice about good and bad princes. This is definitely a fun little book I'll treasure.

4 out of 5 stars Cute Book.......2007-07-12

I bought this book for my granddaughter's 8th birthday. She just loved the activities and the pictures. Any one that likes princess stories will like this story book.

Everyone has been so pleased with this book. Saturday it was actually being passed around the family with lots of ooos & ahhhs. Very worthwhile book.

5 out of 5 stars princess 101.......2007-04-04

any girl who wants to be a princess will love this book. just like the ology books but for little girls. gave this book to a 7 yr old and she drags this book everywhere.

5 out of 5 stars Great gift for a little girl.......2007-03-23

My almost-5-year-old niece adores everything princess, so I bought this along with "Fairyology" for her birthday, as well as "Fancy Nancy" and "Pinkalicious." This book is her favorite of all of them. She sits and makes up stories based on the things in the pictures, and tells them to her parents!
I have to agree to some extent with the other reviewer, regarding the "shallowness" of some of the things in the book. I would have loved to see more about learning how to be responsible and a good leader..but it's a bit difficult to work that sort of thing into this type of format. My niece adores the flip-dresses, and the different jewels and things, and let's face it, that's the appeal of the whole princess thing anyway! And at least there are some bits and pieces about manners and politeness.
If you're looking for something fun to entertain your little girl who likes princesses, then this is a great book that can really stimulate some creativity. If you're looking for something to teach life lessons, then you might want to look elsewhere.

Book Description

From the bestselling author of the Heralds of Valdemar series comes an enchanting novel.

In the land of the Five Hundred Kingdoms, if you can't carry out your legendary role, life is no fairy tale. . .

Elena Klovis was supposedto be her kingdom's Cinderella--until fate left her with a completely inappropriate prince! So she set out to make a new life for herself. But breaking with "The Tradition" was no easy matter--until she got a little help from her own fairy godmother. Who promptly offered Elena a most unexpected job. . .

Now, instead of sleeping in the chimney. She has to deal with arrogant, stuffed-shirt princes who keep trying to rise above their place in the tale. And there's one in particular who needs to be dealt with. . .

Sometimes a fairy godmother's work is never done. . . .

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars another splendid retelling, but..........2007-09-15

Mercedes Lackey is one of my favorite authors and does a magnificently creative job of reinventing traditional (no pun intended) fairy tales and legends. This book, like her Elemental Masters series, is no exception. The Cinderella story gets an engaging twist when Elena becomes the new Fairy Godmother. My only complaint is that Ms. Lackey seems to be following the recent trend of throwing (in my opinion) gratuitous sex into a story. Did the dream sequences with Elena and Alexander, not to mention the actual face-to-face love scene, HAVE to give us a play-by-play of eroticism? She has written satisfying love/sex scenes before (for example, in the Heralds series) without going into minute detail about who was doing what and how. If it were not for these passages in this book, I would give this one the full five stars and recommend it to several young teenage girls I know. Unfortunately, the sex makes it inappropriate for the early-teen group, when otherwise it would be a delightful story for them to read.

3 out of 5 stars fairy tales with a twist.......2007-08-06

This one got such rave reviews I just had to see what all the hipe was about. Sorry but I was not as entralled as most of the reviewers. I know this was suppose to be the first parnormal romance from LUNA, but the romance didn't happened until the last 100 pages. Most of this book was the daily life of how to become a fairy godmother and what The Tradition was all about. This was great information for futher reading in this series, but I just don't feel like it was necessary. I know Lackey was trying to be witty, and some pieces were, but not enough to hold my attention in the beginning. The end, was great. The by play between the prince and the brownies and Elena was funny and made the book.

5 out of 5 stars Outstanding, again!.......2007-02-20

Mercedes Lackey has done it again. She has created a viable world with beautifully realistic characters. Give us more.

5 out of 5 stars Engaging read.......2007-02-09

If you like old fairy tales with a new more grown-up twist, this book & series is a good choice.

5 out of 5 stars Completely Enjoyable.......2007-01-05

I've read so many books now that I've gotten very picky. Most books I find I'm skimming a lot of it--not this one. Very interesting story that I couldn't predict, a great escape with no jarring out of my suspension of disbelief, and the ugly side that you also find in reality was not too heavily detailed.

In this world, there is a force called Tradition that moves events into the path most resembling a Fairy Tale. However, sometimes the circumstances just won't allow the Fairy Tale to have a happy ending, as in this story--Cinderella's prince is just a little boy, so she languishes unrescued instead of living happily ever after.

Now in this world, the person who is the focus of the fairy tale feels the force of magic gathering around them more and more as they go further down the road of unresolved Fairy Tale Completion--the longer it goes on without resolution, the more the magic builds. Most often, either an evil sorcerer comes and takes their magic, resulting in the death of the unfortunate focus of the fairy tale, or a good wizard comes and takes it in a kindly fashion, and they settle for something less.

This Cinderella thinks about settling for less, but doesn't do it...and that makes all the difference.

If you like fantasy, this is worth a try for sure.

4 out of 5 stars Very Entertaining Read.......2007-03-31

I have read several of Mercedes Lackey's Valdemar books and while I don't think that this one was quite as good as those, I did find it very entertaining. It kind of reminded me of a romance novel set in a fantasy world. The story is unique and interesting and I thought that the character development was very good. It's not my new favorite but it's definitely worth a read if you like this kind of thing.

5 out of 5 stars Fairy Godmothers in a new light.......2007-02-16

If you have ever wondered where Fairy Godmothers came from, or whether or not they had private lives, if you've ever wondered what capricious energies are set in motion when Tradition is flouted as Fairy Tales go wrong, you will enjoy this charming, inventive, and enjoyable tale. Mercedes Lackey hits her stride as a writer in these wacky fairy tales (Tales of the Five Hundred Kingdoms series ) with gentle humor, good natured intelligence, and an engaging romantic subplot. As usual with Mercedes Lackey, there is a lot of thundering action between the good and bad guys, and it is clear her fairy tale universe has many, many more tales to unfold. The romance is a little more graphic than is usual with Mercedes, but less than in many current romance novels.

Book Description

Hunky Dory is at the top of her class in charm school. She can make flowers wilt like wet spaghetti. She can make thunder rumble like a whale's bellyache. And she can turn any prince into a frog-but she always changes them back. That's when she knows there'll be a problem

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars I love Esme Raji Codell!.......2007-03-30

The cover alone should be enough to convince any preteen female to read it! Hunky Dory is close to graduating from witch school. Her proud mother proclaims she will be the "wickedest witch wherever the four winds blow." The problem is that Hunky isn't so into being bad. She drops out to practice "wishcraft" instead of witchcraft, to the dismay of her teacher. Hunky was the class star! Dropping out promptly gets Hunky kicked out of home, too. She sets up shop in a nearby forest, practicing as an amateur fairy godmother, doing good deeds in order to feel the warm satisfaction of a job well done fill her body. In her journey to turn good and become a legitimate fairy godmother, Hunky finds herself involved in various fairy tales like Rumpelstiltskin, Cinderella and Sleeping Beauty. This book has awesome illustrations that enliven the text, and it's fun from beginning to end. I would highly recommend it to a child of any age, especially ones that are a little goth, and to anyone who's interested in reading about witches and/or fairy tales.

2 out of 5 stars Way Too Difficult for Elementary School Reader.......2007-01-31

I'm a fifth grade teacher. Several of my students read the book before I picked up the audiobook to listen to. My student didn't like the book, and listening to it, I can see why. The humor is way over the heads of even some of my better readers. I've enjoyed it, but it's not a book I'd recommend to students.

5 out of 5 stars This books is awesome.......2007-01-31

The book is awesome. Esme Raji Codell is the best young adult author writing today....she is an incredible talent.

3 out of 5 stars The potential is there..........2006-01-20

What initially attracted me to this book is its writing style, and this could have been a charming and funny book if it weren't for a few factors:

1) The author knows her protagonist. Or does she?

In the beginning, the protagonist sounds like she has an attitude. Then she sounds like a goody two shoes. Then she just sounds like an airhead as she swoons over Rumpelstilskin. Then she just sounds like a typical protagonist, complete with hopes and morals. Sure, since she is (more or less) a teenager, mood swings are to be expected, but I think she's really developing a multiple personality disorder.

2) Goldilocks, Aurora, Cinderella, and the rest of the Familiar Fairy Tales cast appear one too many times.

Now, I thought the Harry Potter reference in the beginning was cute, but the rest of the references in this book just isn't. The background/"untold" story (possibly with a twist) for Sleeping Beauty or Cinderella and many others has been told so many times that it's just getting old and not funny. It probably would be all right had Codell known where to stop. But of course Rapunzel, Hansel and Gretel, Little Red Riding Hood, Big Bad Wolf, that woodchopper, etc. etc. has to pop up (and Glinda the Good Witch is mentioned! heck forbids). I say no.

It also bothers me because there are supposed to be a LOT of fairiy godmothers around, so how is it this protagonist is the one who gets to kind of cancels out Sleeping Beauty's spell and helps out Cinderella and all that stuff?

3) Too poorly structured.

The beginning is all right though future authors may want to remember that introducing that many names at once in a rush is always a bad idea. Then it just purely goes downhill. First, the conflict that the protagonist is facing is really kind of complex, but Codell makes it so easy to solve and consequently not believable. Second, while I'm aware that this is supposed to be in a diary format, the later entries are so bad in form. The transitions are nonexistent, so it's really like reading a sporadic diary of a thirteen-year-old girl or something.

To sum up: At a glance this book looks better than the average teenage pulp fiction, and while it is pretty clean, I will not especially recommend it. Rumpelstilskin clearly is there for a romance subplot, and that he and the protagonist doesn't end up together may be there to show that a romantic relationship is not everything, which is a good message in this love-crazed world, in my opinion. Still, the book is so terrible as a book that any positive messages are outweighed.

5 out of 5 stars A great read and listen!.......2005-12-17

I don't agree with the Audiofile review _at all_ and that's why I'm putting my two cents in! My eight year old loves this book and she and I both loved the audio version. The narrator is quite versatile and gives a thoughtful, imaginative and entertaining read. The story does slow down at times, but the narrator keeps the intrigue and I found myself listening to the CD's on my own all the way to the end because I really wanted to know how the book turned out!

The book is an unusual and clever twist on the rogue's gallery of classic fairy tale characters. I look forward to reading more from Ms. Codell and hearing more from Ms. Lillis.

Almost a set of short stories, this novel breaks into discrete episodes, centered on identity, love, and death. Jaqe has no identity until she meets Laurie, introduced and named by Mother Night; in that moment, she knows herself, and that she loves Laurie. But once Mother Night has become part of their lives, Laurie and Jaqe and their daughter Kate cannot live as other people do. Knowing Death, inevitably each of them seeks to use the knowledge, to bargain with Death, and to change the terms in the balance of life and death in the world.

Pollack's characters, major and supporting, living, dead, and divine, are memorably human. As she transplants myths and folklore into a modern setting, she gives new life to old tales and a deeper meaning to a seemingly simple world.

5 out of 5 stars For any age, for any gender, for any love, for any PERSON.......2004-02-14

Rachel Pollack has left me completely smitten. Smitten with Laurie, with Jaqe, Kate, and Godmother Night. I didn't want the story to end. She had me nervous, laughing, crying, anticipating. It's a story about love. Love that any reader can understand, in a very universal form. It's a story of high imagination, and vivid details. I could not put this book down. I have since recommended this book to 2 people who have also completely fallen in love with it. This is by far, the #1 on my lists of favorites. It is so beautifully written, and I have never had a book pull me in the way this book has. Thank you Rachel for your gift, without this book, I'd be missing out on something so damn good.

    5 out of 5 stars beyond Orpheus..between Eros, Thanatos & the selfý.......2000-04-12

Godmother Night is now one of my favourite books & it's the most moving book I have read since Geek Love by Katherine Dunn. It's seemingly influenced by both the myth of Orpheus & Cocteau's film, Orphee, which also features a well-dressed woman who is literally death & is attended by motorcyclists. Readers interested in feminist, "women's" or lesbian fiction, as well as those attracted by magickal realism, pagan related fantasy & fairy tales, or just about anyone who loves brilliantly crafted & eloquently written books will not be disappointed. The love affair between Laurie & Jaqe is highly believable & I could strongly relate to their relationship & to the problems that Laurie encounters with her academic studies, it was like seeing parts of my life & aspects of myself on the page. At points I found the book distressing which only added to its power, it takes on serious issues from "life" & beyond. Though I already had some of the comics she has written (The Geek & Doom Patrol), the Vertigo Tarot book, & The Body of the Goddess, (which are of an equal standard to Godmother Night!) this book propelled me onto a quest to read more of her work. Prepare for an intense love affair with this author's work! It's a must read that has left me urgently needing MORE Rachel Pollack books.

5 out of 5 stars Romeo_and_Juliet for dykes with a touch of On_a_Pale_Horse.......1998-07-13

This book really grabbed me... and I am not a feminist. If you read it because you're a politically correct moron and only read "women's books" or just because it's a really good book (the best feminist fiction I've ever read, far better than anything of Atwood's, and I've read three of hers) by all means, read it! The writing is wonderfully crafted, and the romance is beautiful. This is not a sex book, this is a love, life, and DEATH book.

5 out of 5 stars If you die while reading this, be sure to take it with you!!.......1998-05-28

Rachel Pollack is amazing, her accurate account of two women falling in love and then losing each other, is amazing. It leaves out all of the feminist crap that most writter's seem to put into books these days if it just happens to be about ...... dykes.

If you happen to pass this by, pick it up read it and I can almost promise satisfaction.

5 out of 5 stars very lyrical...had me from the start.......1997-05-14

I think this is one of the most beautiful books written this year. Its fairy-tale-like quality is enchanting, but is also completely believable. The modern setting and fantastic events blend together seamlessly. I warmed to the characters, and found myself both crying and laughing out loud many times during my reading of the book. My only criticism is that I found the character of Laurie quite inconsistent in the last part of the book. Despite this, this goes on my favourite book list!If you like fairy tales, this is a must-read.Elizabeth Jones, Melbourne, Australia

    5 out of 5 stars The Godmother.......2006-11-21

The original fairy tales were dark and terrifying, and here Scarborough hauls them into the present day, where it turns out they are no lighter or less terrifying. All the usual suspects appear, Cinderella, Snow White, Hansel and Gretel, and through all their lives the guiding hand of the Godmother. Imaginative, well-crafted, and, well, enchanting.

    2 out of 5 stars A Disappointment.......2004-01-31

This book was a real let-down for me. I had just finished reading Lisa Croll di Dio's "Sherwood Forest" and was looking for some more magickal escapism. This book was just lame. Sorry.

    5 out of 5 stars Wonderfull.......2003-05-30

This is a wonderfull book for all fairy tale lovers. Great story line and wonderfully written.

3 out of 5 stars Well-written but somehow not quite there for me.......2002-05-21

Scarborough is, without a doubt, a talented writer (as if one needs me to tell one that). Her prose just about sparkles; it is a delight to read. It's too bad this story is so.. I don't know.. not up to par. It's like a poorly-fitted dress on a supermodel.

The titular Godmother is the best of the characters here. She swoops in at the behest of the heroine (a typical do-gooder a la "Briar Rose"'s Becca, matryr complex, filled with love for the downtrodden, hardworking and without a romantic interest in sight, etc.) to save the entire city. Along the way, she rescues people who closely resemble characters from old fairy tales (the passage in the book that I liked best was her appearance as Kwan Yin to an Oriental gangbanger -- powerful and entirely believable, but alas, probably lost on most people), like "Red Riding Hood" and "Hansel and Gretel".

It felt like the story took the easy way out in many ways. Of course Hansel and Gretel was about molestation, for example. Many vignettes were too easy, too manipulative, too baldly obvious. Some characters were very stock in nature. The end spiralled out of control fast, coming to a conclusion that I had to read twice to believe I'd seen. I don't get into stories that are too pat, too obviously forced together, but this had that feel, in spades. And the bit about magic being doled out irked me for some reason -- very hokey and totally unnecessary, particularly since, having introduced the device, Scarborough promptly stomps it for the whole rest of the story. She could have thought of a better way to lessen the use of magic.

Would I read it again? Not likely. Scarborough has written many better books, but this isn't one of the better efforts.

4 out of 5 stars Fairy Godmothers in today's world? You bet!.......2001-12-14

In traditional fairy tales, fairy godmothers show up when they are least expected but most needed, to right wrongs and assist those in peril. Enter Felicity Fortune. Summoned to Seattle by a sweet but burned-out young social worker named Rose, she sets out to solve problems both modern and ageless with magic and kindness.

You see, there are many young people in danger in the city. Hank and Gigi have been abandoned by their mother and kidnapped by a child molester. Cindy has just been fired from her job by her own stepsisters, and booted out of her family home. Snohomish is hiding in the woods from a hit man hired by her jealous supermodel stepmom. Dico is living on the streets, unable to get any breaks...until he meets a magic cat. Any of this sound familiar? LOL

In this entertaining and sometimes thought-provoking novel, we see that today's problems are nothing new, and that a little kindness goes a long way. One caveat: Scarborough can get a little sledgehammer-ish with her political views. While I agree with most of these opinions, sometimes the character of Rose talks more like an editorial than a normal human being making conversation. Still, I found this relatively easy to overlook. Overall, I recommend _The Godmother_ to anyone who likes this sort of thing.

5 out of 5 stars Scary Godmother can help children with their fears.......2007-03-22

Wonderful for children, awesome art, and a charming story that I think is appropiate for the youngest of children who are able to follow it. The story is about a little girl named Hannah Marie about to go on her first trick or treat outing with older children instead of her parents. An older cousin, displeased at having been made to take Hannah, carries out a dirty trick to scare her bad enough for her to beg to go home so he can get rid of her. Only Hannah is saved by her Scary Godmother and the tables eventually get turned! In addition, it was even educational (such as explaining the different kinds of bats and why they're good creatures in a way that I think a 5-year-old could appreciate).

I believe this is a treat for all ages. I'm 24 and I've already read it all the way through twice, loving it the second time even more than the first (as I caught more details). And if that's not enough, I LOVE the smell of it! :-)

Though just a note: I ordered this in November and despite Amazon claiming to have it in stock, I didn't get it until a week ago. But I'm glad I'm waited for it instead of trying to get something else!

Jill Thompson is easily one of the most gifted artists I have ever seen. Her work is truly beautiful, and every illustration leaps off the page. This book, as well as the others in the Scary Godmother series, are perfect for Halloween lovers of any age. I'm 28 and I just love sharing these stories with my young nieces and nephews. Thank you, Jill, for giving us such a wonderful world filled with loveable characters!
