4 out of 5 stars The Big Bang of the Manga/Anime craze..........2007-06-23

The Japanese seem to like American stuff. Likewise, Americans seem to like Japanese stuff. Though this cross-pollination seems a recent phenomenon, the import of "Astro Boy," "Tetsuwan Atom" in Japanese, to American television dates back to 1963. But "The Mighty Atom" already had an illustrious reputation in Japan dating back to the original manga, which first appeared in 1951. When American producers saw what arguably qualifies as the first Japanese anime they sensed a hit. "The Mighty Atom" became "Astro Boy." So began the interweaving of Japanese and American popular culture that continues to this day. Other series followed, including "Godzilla ('Gojira'), "Sanrio's "Hello Kitty", "Sailor Moon ('Bishojo Senshi Sera Mun')," "The Mighty Morphin Power Rangers ('Kyouryuu Sentai Zyuranger')," and a multitudinous slew of others. A cute robot boy who had machine guns in his [...] paved the way.

In 2002, watching the rising tide of manga and anime in the U.S., Dark Horse Comics took on the republication of Osamu Tezuka's classic manga. The 23 volume series follows a narrative, not a chronological, thread. As explained in the introduction to Volume One, this follows the Akita Shoten anthology. This volume, following its predecessor, begins not with Astro Boy's original 1951 appearance but with a short 1975 story called "The Birth of Astro Boy." The intention was to make a coherent whole out of the voluminous stories published over the years. Here readers learn that Astro Boy was created as Dr. Tenma mourned the death of his son Tobio. Tenma wanted to bring Tobio back to life. But he soon realized that he created a robot, not a human, and threw Astro out, yelling "Get out of here, you freak!" Eventually Astro ends up in the hands of Professor Ochanomizu, who frees him from a robot circus (viewers of "A.I." will notice parallels). An ethical question underlies this short tale, namely, how should humans treat thier creations? Does a machine with feelings have rights? What is the morality of near-human robots? The introduction states quite correctly that, "The closer we get to a true age of robots, the more meaning Astro Boy therefore assumes."

A story about cyborg dogs, "The Hot Dog Corps," comprises the bulk of this book. Some evil scientists, many of whom look like Cossacks, kidnap dogs and change them into robot warriors. One lost dog, Pero, belongs to Astro Boy's teacher, Mr. Mustachio. Over time, the commander of the robot warriors, #44, begins to develop dog like behavior. Suspicions that he is in fact the lost Pero arise. The story takes Astro and #44 to a lost city on the moon where a robot giant guards a horde of diamonds. Lots of explosions ensue.

The final story, "The Plant People," involves indignant robots from "Alsoa 12" stealing earth's water supply. In the end, with the help of Astro, their last "living" inhabitant takes up residence on earth as a plant. The story has undeniable pathos.

Looking back on his work, Tezuka created new introductions to some of his stories. These reflections are included here, as they were in the Akita Shoten anthology. Tezuka even transformed himself into manga form. In the introduction to "The Plant People," the manga Tezuka makes a candid confession: "The stories of the long Astro Boy manga series are often of uneven quality, and frankly I don't care for some of them that much." This apparent condemnation shouldn't get taken too seriously. Many long practicing artists feel self-reproach towards their early work. But the series itself will tell.

Though Astro Boy may seem quaint to today's manga readers, his historical importance cannot be underestimated. Astro Boy remains a national symbol in Japan with Tezuka dubbed "The God of Manga." This collection helps bring to life the source of the current manga craze. As of now it shows no signs of ending. Arguably, it started here.

5 out of 5 stars Osamu Tezuka's classic manga..........2004-05-20

First of all, let me say I love Astro Boy (nee Tetsuwan Atom). The stories are fun, action packed and don't feel "dated" at all considering the material is 30+ years old. If you're looking for a good solid series, a classic manga, or something for your kids you really should give Astro Boy a try...

5 out of 5 stars Mighty Atom!.......2003-12-27

"Astro Boy Vol. 1" is a great introduction to Tezuka Osamu's famous flying boy robot. Included is the origin story of Mighty Atom/Astro Boy, a longer tale which takes up 2/3's of the book, about cyborg dogs called the Hot Dog Corps, and a third tale about living plants. The stories are in no particular chronological order, and are selected more for feel and quality than anything else. Tezuka has included a few self-introductions featuring himself as a cartoon character.

Of good interest also are an introduction to the series, including notes on translation and selection. The translator attempted to preserve the Japanese names as much as possible, including nicknames, keeping only the Americanized Astro Boy instead of the direct translation Mighty Atom, as Astro Boy is the more familiar name.

Astro Boy is a lot like the Mickey Mouse of Japan, and his good-natured adventures are as much fun to read as the early Mickey Mouse comics. The difference comes in social issues, as Tezuka clearly uses his character to tackle ethical/political issues that interested him at the times, raising the comic up several notches.

4 out of 5 stars Introduction to a Manga Classic.......2003-01-05

I haven't picked up a comic book in quite a few years, and read the inside cover of one of the later volumes of Astro Boy, which piqued my interest.

Astro Boy Vol. 1 is the background story of how Astro Boy was created. However, when Tezuka-san put together these volumes, he mixed and matched different stories, created in different times, to best tell the story. For example, Tezuka-san created the series in 1951, but the first story in the volume was published in 1975. It also has Tezuka-san, interject some of his own personal insights into the book, so the reader better understands the story.

There are three stories about AstroBoy, who is the epitome of all that is good. The first, describes how Astro was created. The second, called Hot Dog Corps, is a strange story of how an army of robots, created from dogs, are ruled by a Princess who is ardent about keeping anyone from coming to the moon. The underlying story, is that good prevails.

The drawing, which is simple, yet interesting, is no too destracting.

I loved this Manga, and can't wait to read all of them. Like candy, they are little treats, that don't take a very long time to digest or consume.

4 out of 5 stars Astrotiffic.......2002-05-13

Astro Boy Vol.1 is a compelling read. It was written/drawn by Osamu Tezuka (Creator), and translated by Frederik L. Schodt (who is apparetly German!).

There are 3 stories in this book, with the first story taking up the majority of the book. The first story the "Hot Dog Corps" may shock you due to its bizarre storyline. Without giving away too much it has nothing to do with 'hot dogs' the food! Rather its about Mr Mustachio's dog who aparently is hot in some kind of way.

My only criticism is that when astro fights another robot he never goes in for the kill. Perhaps the rumours about his queerness are true, perhaps not. Frankly I dont care. But one day astro's nicenessiness will be his downfall.

Book Description

Are you a Troop Committee Member looking for a thank-you gift for the Scoutmaster? Are you a Scout Leader looking for a book that's a tribute to the funny side of Scouting? Maybe you're a Scout that's a candidate for the coveted "Burnt Wiener Cooking Award". Have you ever been, known, or seen a Boy Scout? If you answered "Yes", saluted, or weren't listening because you're in the middle of fixing a cobbler, you've just gotta have "A Boy Scout's Handbook of Madcap Tales, Volume 1".

Follow a lost Scout searching for his troop and a bowl of cobbler through 11 madcap tales, crazy full-color illustrations, exclusive tips from Sir Nuttbucket (bet you've never heard of the Hienrick Maneuver!), and fake "Boys' Life" classified ads.

Tale titles are: The Scout Who Bought a Snipe; I Pledge Allegiance to Everything I've Ever Heard; Road Kill, Hold the Cheese; My Brother Burrnie; The Pampered Scout; The Troop Bus That Couldn't and Didn't Want To; The Granny Knot; A Scout is Also Resourceful; The Tenderfoot Who Hiked Up a Hill and Slid Down a Bad Cobbler; The Scout Who Always Got Car Sick; and Highway Adventure.

Plus there's: The Handbook Part, Extra Bonus Filler, Madcap Scouts' Classified Ads, and a Trading Post order form featuring collectable patches and postcards that go along with the book. "Burnt Wiener Cooking Award" candidates--are you paying attention!?

The author, Sir Nuttbucket (who bears a great deal of resemblance to the illustrator), has vast Scouting experience including: Webelos, Pinewood Derby winner, Senior Patrol Leader, youth escort to Green Bar Bill, yellow snow maker, Council SPL for Peterloon (a big deal in Dan Beard Council), 3 years Summer Camp staff, 2 National Jamborees, 2 Philmont Treks, Seven 50-Milers (backpacking), Eagle Scout, Vigil Honor, Scout Master, OA ceremony team, Vigil Chief, and being rescued by helicopter in the wilderness of Wyoming---oops. He understands that in the process of guiding boys to become responsible young men, madcap stuff just happens---and it's best to have a sense of humor about it.

This zany book is a tribute to the funny side of Scouting and a perfect gift for Scouts and Scouters alike.

2 out of 5 stars A bit disappointing!.......2007-01-11

I had thought this book would be great for my scouting son, but was disappointed in its content. It has some funny anecdotes, but not as much nor as amusing as what you can read in any Scouting magazine.

1 out of 5 stars Save Your Money.......2006-11-15

I found no humor what so ever in this book. Erroneous Scouting information. Poorly concieved, poorly written and poorly laid out. 50 pages of nothing for $7.95. Somebody thought he had a good idea and should have kept the thought to himself. Would not even make a good campfire starter. Save your money.

5 out of 5 stars I laughed my behind off!!!! Well almost off!!!.......2006-05-04

OK - I like the Three Stooges and any move scene with a good fart makes me laugh and this book falls into that genre. It's not meant to be a "serious" book about scouting (at least I don't think it's supposed to), but the little glimpses of scouting and the skits written around them are actually written quite masterfully and definitely in my opinion would deserve a scouting patch. For those who don't necessarily like childish type humor, then you probably need to look elsewhere. But if you're sitting on the can and need a good laugh to get things a goin' then this here is the book you want. :>)

4 out of 5 stars The far side of scouting.......2006-04-21

Madcap Scout Tales is a fun book, especially the ads in the back. The book is colorful, cleverly put together and a quick read. The author is an Eagle Scout himself, yet has enough of a sense of humor to see the lighter side of scouting.

1 out of 5 stars Horribly dissapointing.......2006-02-15

As a Woodbadge trained adult leader, I have to say I am completely dismayed by this book. There are enough real-life events on any given Scouting event to twice as many pages with humourous anecdotes. This book contained little more than humorless stories with even worse punch lines. Seriously-- a story about a kid getting carsick all the time culminating in a punchline where he took medicine for it may be funny to a first grader with a poor sense of humor, but hardly worth the effort to read the page where the story appeared. The only things remotely funny in this slim overpriced pamphlet were the fake ads in the back of the book--and they weren't all that funny.. I recommend that everyone save their money and avoid this rubbish.

5 out of 5 stars Like candy.......2007-08-30

I don't know why I like this so much. Yes, the artwork is stylized and may be an aquired taste for some readers. Sure, there are many more visually polished titles around. And it also might lack some of the juicier love scenes found in the Japanese-counter parts of the boy's love universe.

But dispite all this, Boy Princess is fast becoming one of my favorite boy's love stories. The rough but elegant line work is reminiscent of older titles. The visuals will put the reader at ease, somewhat like a home-cooked meal. The main character is enjoyable, lovable, and worth rooting for. The plot unfolds to at a nice pace, not too quick and without insane horrific plot twists like I've read elsewhere.

The romance is only budding, innocent, and sweet so far - after all, it must go slow to span accross so many volumes. Like any good fantasy/romance about royalty, Boy Princess includes it's fair share of political intrigue and family betrayal. There's always something to keep it interesting.

Overall this is something good if you want a long romance to sink your heart into. It's a great title for those who are just getting into Boy's Love and do not yet want to dive into the more graphic stuff. It's also great for boy's love veterans who have a craving for something pretty and light.

4 out of 5 stars Running out of plots?.......2007-05-22

There was once a lovely Princess who was promised to a handsome and powerful Prince. But she ran away with the stable keeper so now one of her brothers is going to marry the powerful, sword wielding Prince. Will the apples fool him? How long before the young Prince who is pretending to be a lovely Princess ends up a dead duck?
At first I thought the idea was a tad weird but when you think of all the other bender gender stories this turns out to be relatively normal. And while the main character, the cross-dressing Prince, sometimes seems to enjoy it a TAD too much I still enjoyed the manga. The artwork seemed a tad rough but still nice.

5 out of 5 stars A Tale Worth Reading.......2007-01-23

Have you ever wanted to Run away because your parents tried to make you do something? Maybe you haven't but in Boy Princess, the real Princess has run away the eve before meeting her fiance. With two kingdoms uniting for peace through the marriage, it leaves everyone in a sticky situation. Their only solution is Nicole the youngest brother who is the spitting image of his sister....

That is how Boy Princess Begins. I know it's easy to say... "I see where this is going". But it's not so easy. Nicole is young. He has no idea what the world has in store for him, as a matter of fact, he is isn't attracted to guys! He questions it constantly.... so the story has a nice pace to it in the romance department. There is no waking up a few pages in to have Nicole say 'ohhhhh that guy has a nice chest' (teee heee.)

Boy Princess lets the story develop. There are twists and turns and not all of it focuses on Romance. There is political intrigue, Fantasy, parental issues.... this story packs alot in, without leaving you feeling like you have a huge question mark on the top of your head like this: ?____?

If you like Series (this one spans 9 novels) and you like Manga/Manhwa with detailed clothing, and you like something with a little more twists and turns in the plot, then I would recommend this you. It has a few wrist grab and kiss scenes which gives Fan service to those who need it, Nice dialog between characters, and it also keeps some mystery almost to the last novel!

To preview this title you can click here on Amazon or, go to the publishers site.

Parting words: Sweet story... a much needed change from the usual run of the mill...white-haired boy with black-haired boy routine. Take a break from the ordinary and give boy princess a try

5 out of 5 stars The Drama Begins.......2007-01-03

PLOT: Ah, what's to say about this quirky, strange storyline?

Prince Nicole, the youngest prince in his small kindgom, is forced to act as Princess Elena, who eloped days before her arranged marriage with another, powerful kindgom. Basically, a guy dressing up as a girl. Sounds pretty perverted? Think again. This problem of Nicole's is not simply used as an excuse to get two hot princes 'married' to each other. Rather, there's a whole, intricate storyline alongside the romance. Besides the two lovers, there are many other characters that contribute to the devious, treacherous lifestyle of the royal family.

Boy Princess definetly does not fall short on plot like so many other BL's do. Of course, what BL is complete without a few hilarious scenarios? My favorite would be Nicole and Jed's river make-out scene near the end xDD.

ART: As this is manwha, not manga, you will see some differences. I've had people ridicule Boy Princess because of it's 'ugly' art.

"Wow, those guys don't look like guys at all! They barely look like girls!"

Yeah. A simple sideffect of non-appreciative people looking at this unique art style. I, being a fan of art and open to many styles, saw the beauty in it almost immediantly. The first few pages might need some getting used to, but anyone who doesn't completely shun unique art is bound to fall in love with the art in Boy Princess.

Some have complained that many characters look the same, especially with Nicole and Elena, being siblings (as Nicole is quite pretty and can be compared to his sister). Well, of course they look alike. How else could Nicole pose as her? But even when Nicole is dressed up as a girl, you can see that Elena is far more feminine-looking. You can even tell with their clothes. Elena's facial expressions are also pretty different from her brother's, usually very calm and sweet, while Nicole looks conflicted, confused, and easily annoyed.

BTW, the costumes are absolutely stunning. It adds all the more to the old, midieval vibe.

This is one of my favorite manwhas/mangas, and I recommend it to everyone who loves BL and shounen-ai.

5 out of 5 stars Surprised at how good it was!.......2006-11-20

For a long time, I didn't bother picking up this title because of all the negative reviews it got. But one day, I was browsing through Barnes & Noble and though "what the heck." Well, needles to say, I was surprised at how GOOD it was. I mean, I had to suppress my laughter, and was thoroughly enjoying myself (amid all other readers). The art seemed, roughly put, ugly at first, but after getting into the story, I got so used to it that I began to see the beauty of the characters. From a distance, it's still a little sour to the eye, but the story really makes up for it. Take it from someone who is just about the pickiest buyer ever, this is worth to get. I might not keep it in my collection, but I definitely don't regret buying.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Beware! it is very addictive.......2007-08-20

I am not sure what exactly makes this series be so addictive, but the moment I finish a volume I just have to order the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Love, Life and High School.......2006-12-15

This series is Pride and Prejudice, Shoujo style! How can anyone not love a story of a strong, stubborn but poor heroine and an arrogant, handsome, rich hero? Even though the LLLOOONNNGGG drawn out scenes where Tskushi must sort out her feelings can get a little tiresome (HURRY UP AND PICK TSKUSHI!!!) but this is much more so in the anime than in the manga. I suppose I don't need to tell you the plot, it has been described in so many other reviews. I can tell you that I love the characters and I love how everyone in the series grows and develops. Of course sometimes they don't grow up fast enough (Again I must pick on Tsukushi for this. . .) but Yoko Kamio has done a wonderful job in creating a likable cast of distinguishing characters and a plot that is as serious as it is hilarious. Tsukasa is of course my favorite because he is the funniest yet most earnest character. This is a great series and any body can read it. BOF is a witty romantic comedy about falling in and out of love, and in dealing with school at the same time.

The Verdict:
A drawn out but addictive series that's well worth the wait. A-

4 out of 5 stars Would you stand up to the F4?.......2006-11-06

The F4, a group of four of the richest teenage boys at the elite Eitoku Academy, seem to run the school more than the teachers do. Whenever a student offends then, a red tag soon appears in their locker as a declaration of war. This student will then be bullied until they are forced to drop out of school. Tsukushi, after watching a friend of her bullied by a member of the F4, has decided enough is enough and stands up to them. The next day, she discovers a red tag in HER locker, but Tsukushi refuses to be scared away. She knows that the only way to defeat a bully is to stand up to them and there's no way she's backing down. The stakes are raised higher and higher, making Tsukushi wonder if she truly will survive their punishment. Meanwhile, she has noticed that there seems to be something different with one of the boys. Rui, although far from the most pleasant person, seems to take no joy in her torments. What's so different about him?

Boys over Flowers is a fun, fast paced manga that actually touches on some serious subjects. Bullying seems to be a problem in Japan just like it is in the US, and to have a manga where a girl stands up to her oppressors, instead of just being victimized, is very refreshing. Still, I can't help wishing that the manga-ka's could have slowed down even a little more on some of the more serious parts, such as the scene were a character is almost raped. The scene, although important in the manga, seemed to be brushed over so quickly that it is barely given any weight at all. Still, the manga possesses a lot of strong points too. The most obvious being the main character of Tsukushi. She is no delicate, tear eyed shojo heroine, but someone with moral fiber that is not afraid to stick up for what she believes is right. As she goes through her trails and tribulations with the F4, as well as with the other characters, I found myself cheering for her at every moment. The artwork is quite good, but nothing about it really wowed me. Still, there is nothing about it that I can honestly say bothered me.

I hope the series continues to be so entertaining!

5 out of 5 stars I swore I'd never get involved again in this kind of series, I'm glad I lied!.......2006-03-16

I guess I'm gonna have to look at some things to trash, because I've been giving out too many good ratings lately. I just couldn't help, but give this five stars. I was expecting this to be another Marmalade Boy. (Which by watching I think you start to lose manhood points that can only be recovered by watching Evangelian or Elfin Lied.) That anime had a very similar in appearance, main female as the focus too. Fortunately, the difference, is night and day. Unlike the whiny, neurotic female lead Miki of MB, which had me nearly discontinue the series 3/4 of the way through, this gal is a real heroine.

The story of a girl trying to maintain a low profile and get through and elite high school in Japan. For those of you unfamiliar with the Japanese schooling system (and I'm far from an expert,) some Japanese high schools are prestigious enough that the students funnel directly into a top rated college or university. The heroine of this anime, either due to grades, or some other type of qualification, has got into this top notch school. Trouble is most of the students are the upper crust of society, and have what seems to be a natural disdain for the common folk.

Nowhere is that more apparent than with the F4 a group, four boys from some of the most prominent families. They use their status, and just plain meanness to intimidate everyone in sight. One day our heroine can't take watching this any more, and speaks out. Her life may never be peaceful again after this, as it seems the entire class is now against her. Instead of folding under the pressure, she decided to fight back. When she attacks the leader of the F4, he becomes intrigued, and asks her to be his girlfriend, (on the sly of course)problem is she likes another member of the F4.

While the romantic motivations of this series are a bit shallow, they are not unlike those in many real life situations. The F4 leaders motivation for liking the heroine is that she's probably the first female to ever stand up to him. Her infatuation with another member is he is the one member who can't quite tolerate the other students going overboard to "punish" the outcasts on his behalf, and helps her on several occasions. While these are both quite shallow reasons to begin to like someone, isn't that often the start of a lot of relationships, a "gut" reaction. I found that to be very real. Typically long term relationships are formed when those initial reactions lead to the person taking the time to get to know who they've been drawn too. Sometimes it works out sometimes not. Such is life.

What's great about this is that while the stories of this are essentially soapers, they find time after time a way to suck you in at the end to want to see what happens next. Unlike many anime of this type where its obvious who will "get the girl or guy", this manages to keep you guessing till the end. Which is another thing to recommend it, it does have an ending. It didn't run out of budget like some series, or just terminate with no conclusion, or grow stale, and have a default ending.

There are a few reasons not to buy depending on your point of view. Truth be told, this anime is just one step removed from "His and Her Circumstance" in the use of limited animation stills. Fortunately it doesn't "cross the line" like H&HC did when it began using rough cut black and white story boards as anime frames. The art looks very air brushed and water colored, a very 80's look for a 90s series. The other reason is that if you buy volume one, you will have to buy the whole series. This is not a series like Ranma, LUM, or others that you can just watch self-contained episodes. You'll be compelled to see the entire series, don't say I didn't warn you!

5 out of 5 stars Hana Yori Dango.......2006-02-10

Ahhh... the first volume of Hana Yori Dango (Boys Over Flower) of 36 volumes total. This is a good shoujo story by Yoko Kamio. It features high schooler Tsukushi Makino, who came from a poor family, that is attending the school for the elite, Eitoku High. Not only does Tsukushi have to deal with the fact the everyone else attending the school is more wealthy than she is, there is also the F4 to deal with. F4, meaning the Flower Four, consists of 4 of the richest boys attending Eitoku. Those four are Domyouji Tsukasa, Hanazawa Rui, Nishikado Souchiro, and Mimasaka Akira. In the beginning, the F4 enjoyed making pranks and Tsukushi. Afterwords, things had started to change, but slowly. (okies, i'm not gonna spoil any good parts.)
This is Kamio's longest running manga, and a very good one too. Tsukushi goes from one lover from the next, but did eventually decide which one was right for her. Look for the complete series!! It's very addictive~!

4 out of 5 stars Lots of fun........2007-08-15

    1. So, the situations, plots, and characters are a bit juvenile (they were originally conceived for XY magazine which is, ostensibly, aimed at young readers). Each story is self-contained, and only about 4 or 5 pages long.

    2. There are typos and grammatical errors that will make your eyes hurt.

    3. This is not erotica. More like an Archie and Jughead for the queers.

All of that being said, I truly enjoyed this book, and am definitely pleased that I bought it. The whole thing is published in color, and the boys are fun to look at (it's rare to find both of those in a realist gay comic book).

I wish it were ten times as long.

    3 out of 5 stars Disappointing........2005-02-09

I have to admit that I perhaps anticipated too much from this book. I enjoy Mr. Phillips' work, but there seemed to be a redundancy in this offering. His work is playful, and suggestive in a very "innocent" way, however, I am of the opinion that much more could have been done with this title.

4 out of 5 stars Joe Phillips comics all in one place!.......2004-07-28

This collects (as far as I know) every Joe Phillips comic strip in print. I don't buy XY Magazine anymore, so I dunno, he may've done more since this was released in Spring of this year. It falls short of five stars for a couple reasons. First of all, Joe lets on in the introduction that he and a few artist friends of his had to re-do some of the art due to loss of the originals. It's also implied that one or two of the scripts were cleaned up for this release. So why the numerous errors in spelling, grammar, and sentence structure? This isn't a huge deal. I mean let's be honest, most of us will be buying this more for Joe's art than his writing. Sloppy writing and lack of proper editing just bother me a bit. Ah well, Joe's imagination is fertile and he's strong in the humor department (I hope this is coming off as constructive criticism). Second of all, some new material may've been nice. Just a two-pager or something, I'm not asking for much. I can't complain about the lack of new content too much though, the book's fairly priced so you get your money's worth. And unless I'm not remembering right, I don't think I've seen the drawings on the front and back inside covers, those Joe Boys might be new.

Very Good first effort, hope to see more!

    3 out of 5 stars Mediocre. .......2006-04-11

I'm not the biggest fan of short stories because it always seems that just when you get interested in the characters and where they are going the story ends and that's all she wrote. This problem carries into how I feel about the "Boys Be" series, which is ok but not great. The illustrations are so so, and the storylines, while sometimes compelling, are generally too lackluster to make me want to read another volume. I did enjoy some of the cheek factor that went on in certain situations of volume one, but not enough to carry on through any of the subsequent volumes.

This is definitely one of those scenarios where I am glad that I read the first one, but that's all I needed to read.

5 out of 5 stars Great collection of short stories........2005-01-28

Pretty good stories wrapped around some solid drawings. If you like short stories with happy (mostly) endings then this is the book for you. Can't wait for the next installment.
