5 out of 5 stars Season 8.......2007-10-11

Fans of the series should pick this up ASAP! Just like watching an episode on TV. Joss brings you back to his universe kicking and screaming.

4 out of 5 stars Miss Buffy the t.v. show.......2007-07-24

I really miss the Buffy t.v. show, so I decided to read the comic. It was very interesting, but it cost quite a bit for a brief 5 - 10 minute read. I don't know if I'll purchase the others, unless I can find them at their original cost.

3 out of 5 stars Expecting More.......2007-07-18

I only recently discovered that there was a Season 8 written by Joss Whedon and I immediately purchased the first 5 issues. After reading this first volume I'm left wanting more, but not quite as satisfied as I had hoped. Comics are okay, but seeing this on tv is so much better. If this had to be written I think I would have preferred a regular book instead of a comic book. All in all I think the first comic is just okay, but I still look forward to reading volume 2.

5 out of 5 stars Buffy's back better than ever!.......2007-07-01

Buffy the Vampire Slayer season 8 takes place right after the ending of Sunnydale. Buffy, Zander, and a giant Dawn return. A few of the other main characters are missing but Joss Whedon promises they will be returning in later issues.

I loved the artwork and plot line. I mean Joss Whedon helped write this so what's not to like?

2 out of 5 stars Meh..........2007-06-06

I am a big fan of Buffy, so, when I found out Joss had released a comic which would reflect his vision of season 8, I was eager to purchase it. Well.... I can honestly say I didn't like it. I love the Buff-meister and all, but this seemed really silly and not quite up to par. I think the art also lends itself to the unreality. Every character looks like they are 13. Buffy should at least be in her mid twenties.

The plot is pretty simple stuff. Buffy is the leader of a teen group of slayers who fight vampires in the future. Dawn is attending Berkeley and has a really BIG problem. Willow wasn't in this issue. Xander is Buffy's manager. Not a heck of a lot happens.

I would pick up a few issues if I could get it in the bargain bin of my local comic shop. But I wouldn't rush out to pay full price. There are better comics out there.

"Two delightful holiday stories from the New York Times bestselling author in one glorious e-book edition. A Season of Angels When three willing but wacky angels -- Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy -- are given a Christmas prayer to answer, there's just one catch: each angel must teach her charge a memorable lesson before the wish can be granted. Touched by Angels New York City is always in need of miracles, and this Christmas is no exception. Thank heavens the divinely inspired, if slightly dizzy trio -- Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy -- have winged in to answer three Christmas wishes and teach a few lessons along the way. As usual, they've come up with three deserving souls who are about to discover that with this crew, when you wish upon a star, you get a lot more than a pretty song."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A New Favorite Author for Me.......2003-01-28

This is the first book I have read from this author, but will look for more of the same. It was a well written, sweet, funny look at something we all need to believe in. I had just lost my husband and was flying home (first time on a plane). Picked this up in the airport and was immediately immersed in the story, so forgot to be nervous about my flight. It was something I could connect to in my fragil state so thank you Debbie Mcomber for some light at the end of my particular tunnel.

5 out of 5 stars The Perfect Heartwarming Read........2002-12-16

I thought the book was great, I rated it a 4.5 out of 5. Although I didn't feel the characters were fleshed out enough, the stories of Christmas "miracles of love" were heartwarming. A perfect read for this time of the season. And again, although I love books with more meat in them, more story, ets., I felt this was a great book to read.

The first of the two stories, "A Season of Angels" did great in introducing our angels, Shirley, Goodness and Mercy as they helped their charges realize the answers to their prayers before Christmas. Of the three stories (charges), two were more predictible than the third, which was a pleasant surprise.

The angels were back again in "Touched by Angels," again helping three lucky charges. I liked this 'book' alot better than the first, as the stories were a tad more realistic.

I would highly recommend this book to anyone. And apparently there are more books featuring these three angels. Guess I have to go find "The Trouble With Angels" and "Shirley Goodness and Mercy."

Book Description

In "Tales from the Angels' Dugout", take a look at the lighter side of 41 years of frustration and then re-live the excitement of 2002, when the Angels finally got the monkey off their backs. Author Steve Bisheff reminds us of those colorful days with The Cowboy, Gene Autry and the struggles under the ownership of Walt Disney Co., as well as the curses, hexes and tragedies that haunted the Angels for so long. Bisheff contrasts zany personalities such as Bo Belinsky, Dean Chance, Albie Pearson and Reggie Jackson with the remarkable, but non-superstar bunch that finally won the World Series, including The Gamer, The Pest, The Pure Hitter and The Phenom. Finally, what Angels book would be complete without the Rally Monkey, a mascot that took on a life of its own. "Tales from the Angels' Dugout" is just what Angels' fans have been waiting for to capture on paper the long road culminating into a world championship.

5 out of 5 stars THIS BOOK IS WORTH IT.......2006-05-28

THIS IS A BOOK ABOUT THE EARLY HISTORY AND THE CHAMPIONSHIP SEASON OF 2002 CONCERNING THE ANAHEIM ANGELS. THE AUTHOR DOES A GREAT JOB DESCRIBING THE EARLY YEARS WITH EMPHASIS ON THE TRAGIC AND DISAPPOINTING EVENTS THIS FRANCHISE HAS ENDURED. FROM THE PLAYOFF LOSES IN 1979, 1982 AND 1986, THIS TEAM HAS ALSO BEEN SNAKE BITTEN WITH THE DEATHS OF LYMAN BOSTOCK AND DONNIE MOORE. AS THE HEALTH OF OWNER GENE AUTRY DETERIORATED, THE TEAM IMPROVED. HE DIED BEFORE HE SAW THE ANGELS WIN THEIR 1ST WORLD SERIES. THE BOOK ALSO COVERS THE ANGELS 2002 SEASON IN DETAIL AND ALSO FOCUSES ON THE MANY PLAYERS WHO HELPED MAKE IT HAPPEN. I RECOMMEND THIS BOOK FOR ALL ANGELS AND BASEBALL FANS.

4 out of 5 stars Brings the story of the Angels up to date........2004-10-28

Although it is not as well organized a book as Ross Newhan's earlier book, this volume brings the story of this often overlooked and tragically plagued franchise up to date, including the magical 2002 World Championship season. Steve Bisheff does bring in stories about the earlier Angels, whom I remember fondly, although he concentrates on the contemporary stars. Both Newhan's and Bisheff's books should be read in conjunction if you want a good picture of the adventures of this team, of whom I have been a fan since its beginning. GO ANGELS!!!

** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED **
The constellation of characters and themes created in Angel, the popular Buffy the Vampire Slayer spin-off, are explored in this collection of essays. A vampire author, a sex expert, a TV critic, a science fiction novelist, and Buffy writer Nancy Holder provide essays examining the different issues relating to the series, including Angelus as the prototypical high school bully, Angel as victim, Wesley's many transformations, how Spike fits into Angel, the takeover of Wolfram & Hart, and Lindsey's moral center.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting Read.......2005-09-11

I bought Five Seasons of Angel: Science Fiction and Fantasy Writers Discuss their Favorite Vampire (Smart Pop Series) because I wanted to know where Joss got his inspiration for Jasmine, Season 4's villian? I thought she was Oprah, ha. But two authors gave their opinions and I was not satisfied with them. So, overall, I enjoyed the book because it had some trivia that I didn't know as well as some unusual takes on the show's story arcs and themes.

4 out of 5 stars My first foray into obsessiveness.......2005-06-14

This book was the first book I've ever read about a television show. I really enjoyed watching the Angel DVDs and discussing them with other equally insightful friends, but eventually our discussions ran out of juice. I mean, Lorne's sweet and all, but really, what is his purpose on the show? And what was the thought behind bringing Lindsay back in the final season? The authors of the essays in Five Seasons of Angel have a wide variety of backgrounds and are often quite insightful - others hit the mark dead-on. (Why, why, Doyle, did you have to die??) After having read this, I look forward to many more books about television shows.

5 out of 5 stars Insightful and Funny.......2004-12-22

As a fan of Buffy and Angel, I try to keep my distance from conventions, fan clubs, and books like "The Watcher Diaries" in order to not appear obsessed with the shows. However, when I found out about this book and its "sister" Seven Seasons of Buffy, I broke down and got them. The reason I was so interested was that the essays in this anthology were written by many different types of fans; some of them hold PhDs, while one essay is written by a crew member from the show, so he had some pretty interesting stories to tell. I must say that some of these people's interpretations of the show are pretty interesting. A lot of them made me take a step back and look at certain episodes again to see what they were talking about. This book will make a good read for even a casual Angel fan.

5 out of 5 stars Five Seasons of Angel is an awsome book!.......2004-11-03

Five seasons of Angel is an awsome book! This book is based on the cancelled WB series by Joss Whedon and David Greenwalt. The book has many science fiction and fantasy essays based on the TV show, Angel! Each of the science fiction and fantasy authors give their own perspective and point of view on Joss Whedon's series. I like this book because it focus on my favorite Angel characters like Angel (David Boreanaz), Spike (James Marsters), Lorne (Andy Harlett), Wesly Wydham-Price (Alexis Denisof), Cordelia (Charisma Carpenter), Darla (Julie Benz), Fred Burkle/Illirya (Amy Acker) and many other Angel characters. Angel in Season 5 is the best season! Angel (David Boreanaz) and his team take over the evil Law firm, Wolfram and Hart! The essays are well written and are very enjoyable,if you are a fan of Angel, I recommeded this book. Five seasons of Angel is a great book! Highly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars The first anthology on ANGEL is a superb one.......2004-10-17

Although BUFFY THE VAMPIRE has already received the anthology treatment four different times (with at least one more on the way), ANGEL has been singularly ignored by publishers. Sure, there are official viewing guides, some of them (especially the one by Kenneth Topping) excellent, but this isn't the same as getting a host of unofficial takes on the show. And to judge by the collections of essays, the folks who do the best job of writing about the show are writers, not academics or scholars (even though my own background is aggressively scholarly and oppressively academic). It isn't surprising that the best anthology on BUFFY is SEVEN SEASONS OF BUFFY, edited by the same Glenn Yeffeth who edited this new ANGEL collection, nor surprising that this volume happily comes up to the same high standards of that volume.

The great problem with anthologies is that they are of necessity uneven. Some essays are simply going to be better than others. Luckily, there are virtually no truly weak essays in FIVE SEASONS OF ANGEL, and a number of very strong ones. The twenty-one essays overlap to some degree, conflict with one another from time to time, sometimes cover subjects that I would have preferred left uncovered, and take up most, if not all, of the potential themes of the show. No one who loves ANGEL can fail to find this collection utterly fascinating, and no fan will fail to gain new insights into the show's characters and storylines. I was grateful that Conner, my least favorite show got scant mention, and saddened that more was not done with both Fred and her transition into Illyria (a plot line that contained scads of potential for the Season Six that was not to be, a season in which producer Jeff Bell revealed that Willow as to guest star and cast a spell that would allow what remained of Fred to escape from within Illyria, allowing Amy Acker to play a permanent double role).

I hesitate to start mentioning specific essays, for most are quite good. Dan Kerns, who was the Gaffer on ANGEL for the final three years and the Best Boy for the first two, brings a host of fascinating behind-the-scenes details in a highly humorous fashion. Nancy Holder has a great essay on how Spike on the final season of ANGEL differed from his previous incarnations on BUFFY. I'll mention only two more. I belong to those who believe that as much as Angel, Cordelia was the thematic heart of the show, in that she showed how even shallow, petty, and self-absorbed people can fulfill their potential and become not only good but genuinely heroic. I also believe that the dismantling of her character at the end of Season Three, its bizarre transformation in Season Four, and nonuse in Season Five (except for a wonderful one episode reappearance). I understand that some real world issues entered into her being written out of the show, but that doesn't lessen her essentiality in the show. Laura Anne Gilman gets at the heart of her story in her essay on Cordy entitled "True Shanshu." And Jennifer Crusie expresses sentiments precisely like my own (hunt down my old reviews of the ANGEL DVDs if you doubt me) in "The Assassination of Cordelia Chase."

The only two things that I really miss in the collection are an essay that deals with the character of Gunn, who was to me always one of the most underutilized characters on the show, and a lot more on Fred/Illyria. Some might complain of the absence of material on Connor, but for me that is one of the strengths and not one of the weaknesses of the collection.

Any BUFFY or ANGEL fan is going to love this collection. While there is now only one anthology dealing with ANGEL (a situation that will hopefully change), at least it is a good oen.

5 out of 5 stars Seasons of Santa Fe.......2001-01-27

Seasons of Santa Fe was selected Second Place National Winner of the 2000 TABASCO Community Cookbook Awards competition. And no wonder. This is a delightful cookbook with wonderful recipes and great photos and info about the yearly events and celebrations -- such as Indian Market, Spanish Market, and the Christmas Eve Farolito Walk -- that make Santa Fe, New Mexico such a unique place. The proceeds from the book sales go to the organization Kitchen Angels, which provides free, nutritious, and delicious hot meals to homebound Santa Feans with cancer, AIDS, and other life-challenging conditions.

4 out of 5 stars Well written and delightful Southwestern Cook Book.......2000-06-19

Seasons of Sante Fe is a well-written and delighful Southwestern US cookbook experience with some of the best recipes for this style of cooking we have ever had in our home. We love it so much that we ordered numerous copies as gifts for friends and family. Much of the proceeds for this book go to preparing and delivering meals to many in that area who are in need. We discovered Seasons of Sante Fe on a recent trip to that beautiful and historical city that is packed with art and culture much of which is the product of native Americans. This is a great and wonderful cook book.

3 out of 5 stars Angels Everywhere...When You Need Them!.......2006-12-03

"Tis the season for angels to come down to help those who are in need of something special. I've had a couple of guardian angels to be at the right spot at the right time to keep me from being injured. Today, however, God was sleeping and his angels busy elsewhere. I was attacked in the downstairs laundry room of the apartment building where I live. He almost strangled me to death. The fact that he didn't succeed doesn't mean that my special angel was here. The old man was apparently having a WWII flashback and he kept saying, "I'm going to kill you, Polock." He bruised my neck and throat severely but when I was able to grab his eyeglasses and throw them, he started slapping both sides of my face and then he threw me down on the floor into the wood end of the fold-up table. I was not prepared for this attack and so I did not fight back, but did manage to get away and someone else called the police for me. We all need angels at times of trouble, but in a time of great suffering and pain, we need God. True spirit of Christmas lies within your heart. Shirley came down to earth to restore a young boy's faith in God. Each of the three angels this story follows must teach a memorable lesson before the wish can be granted.

Goodness watched over Monica, a minister's daughter had found life in the movies out in L. A. too much to handle, and needed more than a little help to extract herself from the drug culture. She ends up marrying a detective, thanks to the ministrations of Goodness, her special Christmas angel. Love happens anytime; it does not need Valentine's Day or Christmas to cause miracles to happen. Goodness' mission was to find Monica a husband. Monica was devoted to Patrick but he chose someone else to marry. The hurt of having someone she had trusted and was devoted to (had loved with all of her heart) to say she was just his special friend, was a little more than she could take.

Timmy's father had died when he was only ten months old. He wrote a letter to God (not Santa Claus) begging for a father. Every boy needs a dad. Any man can be a biological father, but it takes a special man to be a dad. At Cub Scouts, many years ago, one little boy tried to let the block of wood suffice as his project, car, rocket, sailboat, etc., as he had no one to whittle or show him how to be creative. His mother didn't even try and apparently she had no one to ask for help with her son's projects. It was humiliating for him, but his mother didn't let it phase her. At Christmas, sometimes miracles happen. Because it is Christ's birthday, the angels from Heaven are merciful. And so we come to Mercy.

Leah was a nurse in the maternity ward, who had never given birth herself. She wants a child but times her responses to her husband to the propitious exact moments only, like an automaton and not a loving wife. It didn't work that way, as it is unnatural. When God decides you should have a child, it will happen without all of that manenuering. I'm surprised she'd want to go through all of that fierce pain after watching all those women suffer through the birthing process. That is not a pleasant sight and the pain is worse than any other, even a toothache. The worst pain of all does not have anything to do with having a baby -- it comes from those children you risked your life for, then they neglect you when are are old. You gave them life but they tend to forget that "you have only one mother." Leah prayed for a child of her own. God does not always answer or fulfill our prayers or wishes until it is the appropriate time for things to change. People are nicer during the Christmas season than at any other time with the "peace on earth, goodwill to all men" ringing in their ears and hearts. May this be your best so far, but the best is yet to come -- when you are in need of your own miracle. God works in mysterious, wondrous ways for those who have faith and do unto others as you would have them do to you.

5 out of 5 stars Debbie Macomber's Best Work!.......2000-04-05

This is my favorite Debbie Macomber book, and definitely the best of the angel trio (Season of Angels, Touched by Angels, Trouble with Angels).

The book features a trio of angels (Shirley, Goodness, and Mercy) who have to answer the prayers of three people on earth. The only problem is, the angels enjoy getting into mischief and causing Gabriel many headaches!

The book is funny and romantic. It's a wonderful Christmas romance, and does not include the promiscuous sex found in most of the romances printed today. It fits well with Christian beliefs, and doesn't offend.

I highly recommend this book, if you can find a copy! It's very hard to find as no one wants to let theirs go, and it is out of print. But, if you're lucky enough to stumble upon one, GRAB IT!

3 out of 5 stars Amazon has the reviews for two seperate books appearing on each other's pages.......2005-10-19

Something strange is going on: this review is showing up on the Amazon pages for two different books (both are named 'Tis the Season, but they have different stories in them.) The first book, which has two stories, was released by Silhouette. The second book, which has four stories, was released by Zebra. Hope this bit of info will help buyers clear up the confusion. I've included the back cover blurb and my review for each story in both books:

First, a review for "Tis the Season" - by Debbie Macomber and Lisa Jackson

"Christmas Masquerade" by Debbie Macomber:
He's stolen a kiss in a crowd--and taken her heart with it. Jo Marie Early had never forgotten the stranger who'd held her so briefly. Then she met him again, engaged to another! Still, as the holiday celebrations commenced, Jo Marie dreamed about uncovering the truth behind the engagement--and claiming Andrew for her own Christmas groom!

A little silly, but sweet, in typical Macomber style, it was "cute". It was clean though, no sex, if that's what you're looking for. If you like the whole "falling in love at first sight" thing, then you'll probably enjoy this. I find the concept rather silly. (I believe in attraction and infatuation at first sight - true love could GROW from that attraction.) Anyway, I got past that and tried to enjoy the rest of the story. However, the idea of a supposedly engaged man trying to make a play for another woman bothered me, as well as his fiancee, Kelly, getting caught numerous times by Jo Marie kissing another man.

*Spoiler warning!* In the end, it turned out that Andrew and Kelly were only pretending to be engaged so that Kelly's love interest would be pushing into making a move before it was too late. Still, the revelation came so late in the book that it didn't take away the dirty feelings of people cheating. (If I were in Kelly's place, would I really want a man who was low enough to make a play for another man's fiancee? Nope!)

Okay, but not worth a re-read. Fans of Macomber will probably enjoy this, but for a good Christmas romance, I would recommend her "Angel" books starring Shirley, Goodness and Mercy. (The Trouble with Angels, A Season of Angels, Touched By Angels, and Those Christmas Angels are part of that series. I can only hope she'll write more about them - they're so funny and touching.)

"Snowbound" by Lisa Jackson:
All Bethany Mills wanted for Christmas was peace and quiet. But sexy investigator Brett Hanson ruthlessly stirred up the past, placing Bethany in danger. Then he whisked her away to his mountain cabin for safety--but from whom did she need protecting...?

This story was just okay. It was my first sampling of her work, and while it was enjoyable, it certainly didn't inspire me to run off and find more of this author's books. Not the most Christmassy story, just one that sort of happens to take place at Christmas time. The intrigue was well done, but the romance wasn't very well executed. Three stars.

Not a keeper book, unless you happen to be a hardcore Macomber or Jackson fan.

And now the review for the second "'Tis the Season" by Kat Martin, Lisa Jackson, Elaine Coffman and Katherine Sutcliffe

"Christmas Angel" by Kat Martin
Southern belle Angel Summers doesn't want to see one more damn Yankee, especially Josh Coltrane, the man she once loved. When he joined the Union Army, she vowed to hate him forever. Now he's back in Savannah for christmas, for a miracle that chould heal both their hearts...

I had high hopes for this one. It has so many elements that I love: it's historical, a civil war story, and reunited lovers. But then I got to the part when some straggling Confederate soldiers try to rape Angel. Josh of course shows up with a gun and saves her. And what does Angel do? She begs him to let her attackers go, because "the war made them this way". Completely unrealistic. I guess the author was just trying to show how understanding and kind Angel was, but I just didn't buy it. No decent man will rape a woman, no matter what he's been through. They deserved to go to jail for what they did, but they didn't. That disgusted me so much that I again skipped to the next story. Two stars, since it started off well.

"Under the Mistletoe" by Elaine Coffman
When widow Holly Noel Winter, along with a nanny, housekeeper, six little girls and one baby boy, moves next door to resident scrooge Dr. Stan Levine, it's time for a war between the sexes. Unless Christmas brings peace on earth and a time for even a grouch to fall in love...

I could hardly get through this one. I felt no connection to the characters. (When you find the antics of the dog and cat more entertaining than the growing attraction between the hero and heroine, that's a problem in a romance story.) Also, Holly's kids were spoiled BRATS! They broke windows, trespassed, peeped into Stan's house after being told not to, picked his flowers, stole his freshly delivered milk, uprooted the stakes from his plants, caused him to accidentally fall off his ladder and almost die...the list goes on and on. And were they punished? No! Holly only gives them a light "you shouldn't do that" scolding without ever bothering to back it up with real consequences, like a responsible parent should. If I had ever trespassed onto someone else's property and taken their stuff (read: stealing!), I would have been grounded for a month, and probably sent to bed without supper. Yet these kids are not punished for being horrible little monsters. Also, Holly had been married three, yes three times by the time she met Stan. When she and Stan finally get married in the end, is there any wonder why I'm left with a cynical "as if it will last!" attitude? One star.

"Home for Christmas" by Katherine Sutcliffe
Virginia "Gigi" Valemere is in a bah humbug period: it's Christmas, she's broke, and a stranger on a motorcycle spooked her horse so badly she was nearly thrown. Then the motorcyclist turns out to be a man with secrets, including the one that can make this holiday the best one of Gigi's life...

This story was just so-so. Okay for a one-time read, but not good enough for a re-read. It did have the charming "small-town" thing going for it, which was pleasant. However, I know this author is capable of writing so much better than this, so I was a little let down when reading this story. Three stars.

"A Baby for Christmas" by Lisa Jackson
Lonely Annie McFarlane is having a blue holiday...until a baby in a basket is left on her doorstep. When a handsome man appears to claim the child, Annie faces losing the most precious gift she's ever been given...or getting another Christmas suprise.

I never finished this one. I got about half-way through, but soon realized that it was a 'falling in lust' story rather than falling in love. I have no problem with the hero and heroine being sexually attracted to each other, but there needs to be more than that to make the relationship believeable. Also, I find that while Lisa Jackson writes mystery and suspense very well, her books are somewhat lacking in the romance department. This was no exception. Two stars.

Neither book was a keeper. If you can borrow these from a friend or find them at a garage sale, you might want to read them. Otherwise, don't bother. Neither is really worth the money.
