Super fast shipping!! I ordered this book for a class on a Thursday and I received it on the following Tuesday. The condition was perfect. The price was good as the school was packaging the book with an Atlas (which wasn't needed for my class) for $135.00. Thanks Amazon!!

1 out of 5 stars Didn't use.......2007-05-20

on class syllabus only to find out it wasn't needed...don't know if it's a good resource tool, never used.

5 out of 5 stars X-tremely readable textbook.......2005-12-29

I wasn't too sure I was getting into the right area of study, but after taking a class that used this text, I'm a lot more confident. It breaks up theories on why the environment is the way it is and how it came to be into well organized chapters and makes them especially clear with ample pictures, tables, and diagrams based on factual examples.

I have yet to hear a criticism of these thoeries apart from short, unreferenced, useless reviews, but if it does happen to be fiction, I'd rank it alongside of JRR Tolkien's best. Either way it would make a great 'coffee-table' book.

It is also laced near the end of chapters with author commentaries about the human species' inability to avoid poor choices for habitats such as near the sides of unstable mountains or flood-prone land in areas frequented by hurricanes (written prior to 2005), make of that what you will...

1 out of 5 stars Dry, Misguided.......2002-01-21

This book is based on many theories as old as some of the pre-historic subject matter. Assumptions are not well researched or thought out. Poor organization and many dead-end trails. Very tiring to read. Skip it.

4 out of 5 stars Just the right amount of info, nice illustrations........2000-01-19

The book gives clear, concise explanations of each aspect of the environment and atmosphere. The Earth, clouds, oceans and soils are covered. Nice illustrations to better comprehend topics in each chapter.

Book Description

Fairies are very real and loving beings who want to help us live joyful, prosperous, and healthy lives. In this enlightening book, Doreen Virtue clearly explains who the fairies are, how they’re helping us, and ways to connect with their magical energy.
True stories from people who’ve encountered fairies and benefited from their assistance illustrate Doreen’s teachings. You’ll learn how fairies aid people in finding lost objects, heal themselves and their pets, make gardens grow miraculously fast, and help clean the environment. You’ll also see photos of a real fairy handprint, and other visual evidence that demonstrates that fairies are very real indeed.

1 out of 5 stars Cutesy, superficial glitz.......2007-09-04

Doreen Virtue's books on Divine Guidance and Earth Angels impressed me as being clear and "on the money," so I was hoping this book would cut through the cutesy stereotype and give a sound understanding of the fairies and nature spirits.

Unfortunately this is one of the most superficial treatments of fairies that I have encountered. Aside from several illumining fairy stories sent to the author by fans, the book offers nothing but rosy stereotypes and half-baked platitudes.

According to Ms. Virtue the main message of the fairy race is that "life is fun" and "you can magically manifest everything you need."

The way to attract fairies is to put "candy," "shiny objects" and "doll house furniture" in your yard. And if you want to empower fairies to save the earth repeat: "I do believe in fairies!"

If you use non-toxic cleaning products, the fairies will love you and grant you favors; if not they will play tricks on you. Despite their acute awareness of our habits, the author suggests you warn the fairies every time you walk on the grass.

Almost every chapter of the book exhorts us to "practice recycling," "donate to environmental groups," and "be kind to the environment" yet the book is printed on glossy, non-recycled paper.

Almost half of the book consists of full-page photos (produced by a marketing professional) of scantily-clad women in medieval costume languishing in forest scenes. None of the images depict deeply wise beings actively serving humanity and the earth. There is one alleged photo of the "little people" which is obviously a silhouette created by the eraser tool of a paint program.

This book appears to be little more than a hastily conceived marketing venture, so I decided to do some research.

On googling Doreen Virtue, I found that a number of her former students assert that her training programs in healing and counseling are so superficial as to be dangerous, and her emphasis is far too heavy on marketing (see for example the Cult Education Forum or Skeptico blogsites). Ms. Virtue is a New Age icon, but that does not mean readers should just buy into the rosy image and suspend critical thinking.

If you want a serious, thoughtful book on fairies that portrays their deep wisdom and dignity, I would recommend The Sidhe by John Matthews.

Very insightful and full of information about the fairies. At times I was taken back to childhood and that innocent happiness that was lost for so long. I feel it coming back now. Thank You Doreen and Thanks to my Fairy friends

4 out of 5 stars Inspirations on connecting with the fairy folk.......2007-07-07

I have always been a fan of Doreen Virtue, and find her books to be uplifting and inspiring. This book, however, brought with it mixed feelings.

It's a very attractive book, filled with simply stunning illustrations from artist Howard David Johnson (www.howarddavidjohnson.com). It's very short (only 130 pages) and is a very quick and enjoyable read. It has ten chapters and includes information on who the fairies are, houses, careers, and other gifts from the fairies, healing with the fairies, the fairies and animals, gardening and the fairies, children and the fairies, the fairies and school, the spirit of nature, flower fairies and other elementals and connecting with the fairies.

Each chapter includes personal stories from the author, or experiences that others have had with the fairies. Doreen gives very simple explanations and examples of what everyone can do to inspire a closer relationship with the fairies.

This book is perfect for those wishing to learn how to connect with the fairy folk, and it's even suitable for children (as my eight year old and ten year old will attest). It's sweet, beautiful and charming, and should inspire just about anyone to want to bring the fairies into their home and garden.

The only thing that bothered me about the book were a couple of inaccuracies in her folklore that a little research could have prevented. First off she states that the selkie is a mermaid that is a seal while in the ocean and a woman while on the land. I can't find any reference for this? A selkie is a seal (not a mermaid disguised as a seal) who can shed it's skin and assume human form while on land.

She then states that the goddess Dana turned the Tuatha de Danann into leprechauns so they could remain in Ireland (they were being invaded by the Milesans). I also find no reference for this. The Tuatha de Danann are supernatural beings who have remained so, retaining both their identity and appearance despite the fact that the Milesans did indeed win Ireland.

At another point in the book she refers to the rune stones as being gifts from the tree spirits to the druids. I have to wonder if she has the runes mixed up with the ogham (they do both happen to be alphabets along with divination systems). The Celtic Tree Ogham is indeed connected to the spirits of the trees (hence the name "tree ogham"), whereas the runes were said to have been brought to humanity by the Norse god Odin. And where the runes do have some reference to trees, they don't have the strong connection that the ogham does.

Of course those are just minor points if you are looking at this book as strictly an inspirational piece, and most people would probably never notice (or care) about the minor inaccuracies. Nowhere does the author state that this is a scholarly work, and indeed, it's not meant to be so.

As a book designed to promote an interest in connecting to the fairies (and thus the environment) I definitely give it two thumbs up.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing book!.......2007-07-02

I read this book in one day. It completely opened my mind to the fairy world (which i must admit I was a skeptic). It explained a lot about the fairies and how they can help you. After putting some of Doreen's advice to work, I must say, I am a believer now! It's an informative book that is easy to read and has fabulous pictures. I highly recommend this book.

5 out of 5 stars If You Want To Learn About Real Fairies This Is Where To Start.......2007-06-09

As an avid reader of Ms. Virtue's other books, I was very happy to have another book about the Nature Angels/Fairies. If you have her book Healing With The Fairies and/or are interested about learning about the Fairies, this is a must-have!

Book Description

Conscious Conception is the comprehensive reference for fertility awareness. All natural methods of family planning, both ancient and current, are presented within the larger context of sexuality and an evolving spirituality, which embraces the religious wisdom traditions and goes beyond.

The book is for anyone who wants to prepare before conception for the great journey as partners in creation: commonly known as becoming PARENTS. Couples who are labelled "infertile" will discover new possibilities and ways to naturally conceive.

This book is also for anyone exploring fertile sexuality and desires a way to avoid contraception and pregancy both at once. The information is shared with the hope that every baby can be a welcomed baby AND strengthen sexual relationships. Rather then rely upon medical device, chemicals or surgeries, the invitation of Conscious Conception is to experience fertility as not in the way of sexuality, but rather, that fertile sexuality is THE way of spirituality.

The authors boldly guide us through such real issues as abortion, adoption and choosing the gender and birth time of our babies yet always within a larger story of SOUL myth, metaphor and our evolution of ideas about sexuality and by extension, creation.

One prevailing concept in Conscious Conception is that we can put to rest the "victim-of-fertility" archetype which has been at best the inspiration of great literature/tragedy for millennia, and at worst has released much pain and suffering upon our Earth. We can become conscious of our capacity to co-create as simple as knowing when one is hungry or thristy, we can know when we are fertile and act in ways which are best-for-life.

This natural knowing is aided by attention to not only our physical bodies and fertility cycles, but our dreams and desires. What is emerging at the end of this millennium is the realization that fertility awareness is a SOURCE experience, one which puts us in direct relationship with creative energy. By becoming conscious of our fertility, we become more creative.

It is our choice in what form we show the world our love a baby is but one option. Conscious Conception transcends the pro-choice and pro-life polemic. Conscious Conception is both at once simply stated, it's instruction is to "Choose Life".

The propaganda which is put out by the contraceptive industry results in many unwanted children and abortions. All contraceptive methods have failure rates which mean real conceptions. Natural Family planning has the best statistics in effectiveness for one reason when there is any possibility of pregnancy, abstinance is practiced. When fertile, regardless of contraceptive promises, babies can be conceived, and sometimes are.

Included are detailed ceremonies for healing previous abortions, both public and private rituals to resolve the past and be more present in the unfolding fertility story now. Abortion is not moralized as being "wrong" rather, it just hurts and is increasingly unneccessary as the practice of Conscious Conception/ Fertility Awareness is spread throughout the world. Again, contraception is deconstructed to show its inevitable failure while in contrast, when cyclical abstinance is employed, there are no conceptions.

Plus the world's best kept secret fertility awareness inclusive of abstinance, enhances a long-term monogamous relationship in many ways that usage of contraception cannot. It also is optimal in short-term relationships as the practicioners need fear no untimely pregnancy.

What would the world look like if every baby was a wanted, welcomed baby? If women knew ourselves and honestly communicated our truth in regards to fertility to our lovers? What if teens learned fertility awareness, which embraces the best of all ideas about sex education, and developed a real self to esteem? Conscious Conception describes such a world a world of the POSSIBLE FAMILY. Freebirth, waterbirth, tota

1 out of 5 stars So disappointed and left me with a bad taste.......2007-03-10

I bought this book because I was interested in natural techniques to fertility and "consciously" conceiving my future child. I was hoping that the authors would have an unbiased, balanced perspective; however, I have found that this book is VERY "new age". Don't get me wrong, there are many new age principals that I agree with. I just think that the authors of this book are on the extreme deep end and are extremely biased by their own opinions.

One example is in the article "Health, Nutrition & Fertility" by Frederick Hamilton Baker. In regards to the amount of chemicals that are found in foods and therefore in our bodies causing infertility, he says "It's as if the soul isn't very interested in coming to unhealthy parents especially in these 'latter days' when there are already so many other early obstacles to fulfillment. (Unnatural birthing practice, lack of breastfeeding, childhood torture in the form of cribs and city housing, etc.)"

"Torture" as he uses it, is such an extreme viewpoint. I haven't read the whole book; it's unreadable. But one can assume from this statement that he is pro- bed sharing - which is fine, except I think it's really rather rude and ignorant to assume that all children are "tortured" by being put into cribs (I know plenty of them who love their cribs, my own son being one of them). He also expresses a belief that eating meat is deviating from a healthy "whole" diet. Regardless of what he feels is personally best for himself, I think it is small-minded to assume that that must be the case for everyone and a better proclamation would have been that if you are not a vegetarian, meat consumption needs to be moderated.

Elsewhere in the book is an article by Jeannine Parvati Baker called "Astrology: Stars in Our Eyes or Preventing Dis-Aster". I don't know what else to really say about this article except that it seemed to lack a point. She talks excessively of what sign the moon (for example) was in when she first ovulated and then after she gave birth one out of five times, the signs of all of her children, etc., and goes on to say that she sees a pattern without really discussing what that pattern is. I am pretty in to astrology, more so than the average person, and I really didn't get the point.

In fact, much of this book seems to be a little self-indulgent. The authors speak from their own heavily biased perspective without maintaining any sort of objectivity or sense of how their experiences might relate to the reader. It is unfortunate, for this book had great potential - it's large with beautiful illustrations throughout and alot of the topic material is good. The writers just didn't seem to be able to keep their feet on the ground long enough for this book to really be practical at all. And quite frankly, it is also offensive. It seems to me that the authors are taking the viewpoint that living a natural lifestyle in sync with nature that you can achieve fertility, healthy pregnancy, etc. My last pregnancy ended in a stillbirth because my son had a birth defect, and I eat and buy everything organic, never take medication, do most of what they are suggesting in this book anyway. And it still happened. My point being not that living a natural lifestyle is not good, but there are most definitely instances in which modern technology and medicine can be helpful. For example, many women suffer from clotting disorders and suffer repeated pregnancy losses until they are diagnosed and take blood thinners during pregnancy, after which they are able to go full-term and give birth to healthy babies. I get the feeling like Jeanning Parvati Baker was lucky (nothing more, nothing less) to have given birth to five healthy children. I don't think that it's because of astrology, or vegetarianism, or anything else that she is talking about in this book.

So in conclusion I would say this book is good if you are extremely into new age ideas, as this book is VERY new age (I don't even know how other reviewers said it wasn't at all; this book reeks of it). But if you are someone who is not at all into new age ideas, or you are into some but combine new age with conventional wisdom to find the balance that is right for you, then this book is pretty worthless. I wish I could return it and get my money back. I am going to try to buy some other books that might be related to what it was I was originally looking for, and hopefully they will be much better than this book was.

2 out of 5 stars wow... big book. far fetched?.......2007-01-23

Not an easy read... pretty "flighty" swoops around from subject to subject, really difficult to follow. Wouldn't particularily reccomend.

5 out of 5 stars this book changed my life.......2004-09-08

I am an avid reader of books on many topics..spiritual, medical, educational....this book is all that and more. It has changed me. I have recommended it to many friends and all have loved it (can't put it down). This book is such a great inspirational resource for women and while the focus is fertility...even those not trying to conceive will find plenty of empowering wisdom inside this book. It offers a great perspective of who we are as females and the power of creation that is contained within us. While some of the views are a bit controversial (abortion..to have or not to have....baker is confidently pro-life) ...my pro-choice self did not at all feel put off by baker's comments on the subject. In fact, quite the opposite. THIS IS A GREAT BOOK. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars AMAZING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.......2004-01-05

This book is a beautiful, breath of fresh air! Ms. Baker is a goddess, and will thoroughly help you to see the goddess within yourself. What can I say about this lovely work of art? As you meditate through the words of this "bible", you will begin to cultivate a fertile self you never knew you had. I bought this book to help with my fertility problems, and it is wonderful in this aspect, but it is oh, so much more! Please read this book.

5 out of 5 stars A message for all time.......2003-12-28

In today's world of ever-increasing assisted reproduction technology, this book is even more important than when it was first published in 1986. This enormously rich and original work of art takes readers on a very special journey. A journey about beginnings, with a very special guide-Jeannine Parvati Baker reigns as the spiritual leader of the Women's Movement in the US and her influence has spread abroad as well. She has always been a powerful advocate for babies to be born naturally into families who can express their own power inspite of the medical establishment.
Every individual considering pregnancy should study her insights, and return to the book again and again, because a conscious conception is the cornerstone of primal health.

Book Description

Since the publication of her best-selling book Earth Angels (more than 80,000 copies sold), Doreen Virtue presented workshops about these lightworkers to several international audiences, which yielded additional information about the various realms that these beings originate from. In addition to the “core realms” that Doreen discussed in the first book (Incarnated Angels, Incarnated Elementals, Star People, and Wise Ones), some new realms have been discovered.
In Realms of the Earth Angels, Doreen discusses the original Earth Angels book, plus gives updated descriptions about the new realms, which include Mystic Angels (half-angel, half-wise one); Leprechauns (half-elemental, half-wise one); Merpeople; Knights; and more.
As with the original book, you, the reader, can take an expanded quiz to help you recognize your own realm. Each realm has its own chapter, with Earth Angel characteristics, suggestions, advice, and case studies.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting read.......2007-09-28

I purchased this book along with Earth Angels, both were fairly inexpensive which was nice. Also the size is great if you want to take something along with you when you might have a wait (Dr. office, etc.)
Overall both books were interesting to me, and I felt like I did not waste my money. The only real 'complaint' I have with this book is unlike Earth Angels, it did not have the little quiz to see which Earth Angel you would fit in most with. If it had that little quiz, I would not have bought the first book, as this book is more or less a repeat of what the first book had, but with a tad bit more information.
I did feel like the first book, and this one answered some questions for me. A lot of what I read in both books made sense to me, also it was interesting to read about all the other Earth Angels.
Again like I mentioned before, if this book had the quiz that came with the first book, I would have not bought the first book. I believe it is thought that everyone who has the first book would buy this book and those who hadn't read either one would do like I did and pick up both books.
It was an interesting book; tho it would be nice if it even more information. Also if it had the quiz so one wouldn't 'have' to buy the first book to test and see which category they fit into most.
I do recommend this book as an interesting read, it definatly opened my eyes and gave insight as to why I am the way I am about some things. Also the price was not bad at all, which makes it all the more appealing to buy.

5 out of 5 stars A Must-Have For All Earth Angels!!!.......2007-06-09

As an avid reader of Ms. Virtues other books, owner of her book Earth Angels, a Mystic Angel (you'll have to read this sequel to discover what this realm is, and about the other newly discovered realms) and a very interested Lightworker, I was, and still am, soooooo happy about this sequel. However, I'm absolutely THRILLED to now have read and own this priceless book! DEFINITELY A MUST-HAVE!!!

3 out of 5 stars Nice ideas, but too much ego stroking........2007-04-05

Read: 2 1/2 stars.

I picked up this book because I perceived it as a book that would discuss incarnated angels, elementals, wise ones, etc., as archetypes that individuals could relate to. While this does seem to be its primary intent, I found it hard to take the book seriously, because (as I saw it) the author made a point to stroke the egos of her readers, making it seem like the readers were somehow more "extra special" than the average person. It seemed like a shallow attempt to placate the target audience, who are assumed to have had unusually unfair lives, who are misfits, and who would readily and happily be won over by the notion of somehow being intrinsically above and beyond other people.

While I've no doubt that some people might have a more global purpose in life, or a broader purpose, or a service-oriented purpose, or a more spiritually-oriented focus, I did not appreciate the way the author worded things... Everyone has a purpose of equal importance. As I perceived it, the author said things in a way that was so flattering it was practically patronizing. People should have esteem, and know they have worth, but the book's attempts at expressing these concepts seemed rather artificial to me.

Book Description

In the same way that "The Indigo Children" was a phenomenon that was much talked-about, before the book came out and explained it, "Earth Angels" is a topic of much discussion among spiritually minded people world-wide. Four years ago, Doreen Virtue wrote an article on the topic, and then a chapter in her book, "Healing with the Angels," and then more information in "Healing with the Fairies." Since that time, Doreen has been flooded with letters from people who resonate with the idea, requesting more information.

"Earth Angels" will be the first book devoted to the topic. Doreen will describe the five different types of lightworkers: Incarnated Angels (those who had previous lives as angels, but who are now here as humans); Incarnated Elementals (those whose previous lives were in the elemental kingdom, as fairies, elves, etc.); Starpeople (those who have lived the majority of their past lives on other planets); Walk-In's (those who came from a high spiritual realm and walked-in to another person's life, as that soul gladly exited their body); and Reincarnated Sorcerers, Sorceresses, and Wizards (those whose most recent past life was during Arthurian or Atlantian times, when they practiced high magic).

The book will include dozens of case studies; a fascinating analysis of an extensive survey that Doreen has conducted among people who identify with the five types of Earth Angels; and guidance to help readers to feel happier about their lives, their own idiosyncrasies, and their missions.

5 out of 5 stars Amazing author.......2007-07-26

It is great to finally find someone who writes about all the subjects that I have know about and have experienced first hand. All of her books are very uplifting and informative. We often tend to believe that there is nothing more than meets the eye and nothing is further from the truth. I have since purchased another three of her books.

5 out of 5 stars Wake up!.......2007-03-09

I was thirteen when I first realised something "weird" about myself. One Sunday morning my grandfather thought it would be a great idea for me to go to church with him, so he had me get dressed and gave me some change for the collection plate. The people at the curch were nice and all, but there was something missing from the experience. After almost an hour of being called a sinner and being reminded over and over again that Jesus was dead, I decided that I had heard enough and ran out of the church! For some reason I knew that I was not a sinner and that the Lord Jesus is not dead. Most importantly, I understood that the life of Jesus is a blueprint: the lord didn't come to show off, but to show us. His teachings should especially resonate with those of us who "know better". This book helps YOU to accept who you are and encourages you to actively seek the Christ within YOURSELF and to assist mother earth and our human brethen at this most crucial time in Gaia's history. Wake up!

5 out of 5 stars Quite an interesting read.......2007-01-13

First, I'd like to say that people who have closed minds should not read and review books of this nature. If you believe in angels, the spiritual world and another realm, then you will find this book as interesting as I did. With God, all things are possible, and I personally believe angels walk among us. I've had at least 3 experiences where an "angel" appeared from nowhere to help me.

For those who think Doreen Virtue is nuts, why do you even read her books then??

2 out of 5 stars Earth Angels... ?.......2007-01-08

I read this book about four years ago and boy, what a trip now looking at it again. It is nice to think about but I wouldn't take it too seriously. Some nice ideas but read it to make up your own mind. Don't bother buying brand new.

5 out of 5 stars Who, Me? You Godda Be Kiddin'!.......2007-01-05

This is an approximate 157-page pocket-sized book, the size of a 4" x 6" photo, great to carry around or place anywhere. The subject matter is incarnated angels and elementals, starpeople, walk-ins, and the wise ones (wizards, shamans, etc.) The concept is that if you feel differently than others and have certain characteristics, you may be one of the above. A 30-item checklist helps you to self-identify based on characteristics and feelings. Further chapter descriptions provide additional details, suggestions, your possible needs, and so on. I would guess that if you're looking at this review, you already suspect you may be different, and may be one of the above beings. Whether you believe in the possibility or not, this is interesting and fun reading.

A further example would be: "...it's very common for Incarnated Angels to carry extra weight on their bodies...not due to overeating, but because they're energetically shielding themselves from fat. They have difficulty losing weight, even with stringent dieting or exercise...they absorb their client's toxic emotions, and their bodies blow up like sponges absorbing water..." (The term "client" is generally referring to a personal or business sense because they often try to help people by listening to everybody's problems.)

The writer, Doreen, is a metaphysical doctor of psychology. She works in the angelic realm and has extensive writing and teaching experience, and clinical practice.

Book Description

Focusing on design rather than technique, this guide demonstrates how a motif can be rotated, reflected, or repeated to create an entirely new quilt pattern. Thirty base elements are provided in several sizes for easy tracing, scanning, or photocopying, and step-by-step instructions explain how to arrange copies of the chosen element to create border, corner, block, or frame designs. Illustrations show examples of assembled patterns, and the last chapter provides directions for adding trapunto, a padding technique that adds depth and definition. The DVD counterpart brings the discussion to life as the author creates a custom quilt design based on a single geometric figure, marks a quilt top, and demonstrates three different trapunto projects.

This book is more of a sequel to Whitework Quilting that is now out of print. The book itself is more scrolls and designs than any information, but the DVD that comes with it is fantastic. It covers the how to from the Whitework Quilting book and more. Can't wait for her next book to come out.

4 out of 5 stars Aw, now I want a raven........2007-07-09

I think I'm the one person on the planet who hasn't read a lot of Mercedes Lackey books. I've only read "Children of the Night" which is a VERY different book than this one.

I really liked how the book so thoroughly immerses you into the time frame, the social dynamics and the etiquette of the era. Ms. Lackey nicely weaves the fantasy elements into the historical realities of the period. I also appreciated how she discussed true evil as a lack of emotion, rather than rage and fire.

The book did leave me wondering how truly nasty the very nasty villain would have been if she had been born a man.

I think I'll take a trip to the Tower of London and think very hard at the ravens now.

4 out of 5 stars Children with paranormal talents.......2007-03-28

The novel deals with school environment of talented children and thuss is of special interest. It's fantasy of an ideal school and good teachers, and it gives good mind and feelings to the reader, who can correlate it to her's ovn reality of the past. A nice story, with good characters, activities and environments. I recomend it to all ages, young and elder people

5 out of 5 stars Magic.......2007-03-10

Most books written by Mercedes Lackey will be viewed as magic to any person that enjoys fantasy. The Wizard of London is no where short of her best. She knows how to twist old story board schemes and give us a wonder.

5 out of 5 stars One of my favorites.......2007-02-25

The reviewers who nit-pick about the Elemental Masters books are probably the people who need to absorb the humanity of those books.

4 out of 5 stars Fascinating Book.......2007-02-16

I was attracted to this book because of the title. London is my favourite city and anything that has a reference to it, has an irresistable pull for me. So even if I chose the book for the wrong reasons, it still turned out to be good. Having only read 'Rediscovery' in the darkover series which Lackey co-authored, it was definitely new for me. And it was definitely a riveting and fascinating read because of the aura it surrounds you with. There is humour, subtle and sharp - and there is detail with crispness and clearness like a cold winter morning. You never feel the absence of a master plot, but the lack of it makes you take notice of the details of each situation that rises to meet you. Definitely a must read for all the people who love Darkover books

Mercedes Lackey returns to form in The Serpent's Shadow, the fourth in her sequence of reimagined fairy tales. This story takes place in the London of 1909, and is based on "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs." Lackey creates echoes of Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, pays affectionate homage to Dorothy Sayers's Lord Peter Wimsey (who plays an important role under a thin disguise), and turns the dwarves into seven animal avatars who masquerade as pets of her Eurasian heroine, Maya.

Some of Maya's challenges come from the fact that she is not "snow white," and she has fled India for her father's English homeland after the suspicious deaths of her parents. Establishing her household in London, she returns to her profession as a physician, working among the poor. Her "pets" and loyal servants stand guard, and Maya herself uses what bits of magic she managed to pick up in childhood to weave otherworldly defenses as well. But the implacable enemy who killed her parents has come to London to search for her; if Maya can be enslaved, her enormous potential powers can be used to the enemy's ends. Fortunately, English magicians of the White Lodge have also noted a new, powerful presence in their midst, though they're having trouble locating her, too. They send Peter Scott, a Water Master, to track her down. He finds Maya beautiful and benign, and is determined to teach her to use the Western magic she is heir to, before her enemy discovers her.

Some will find the author's Kiplingesque descriptions of India and Hindustani culture offensive. Lackey describes Maya's enemy as a powerful devotee of the goddess Kali-Durga, though she carefully shows that the avatars of the other deities will not attack her, and has Kali-Durga repudiate her servant in the climactic confrontation. And, though the story is layered, its surface is as glossy and brightly colored as an action comic. But readers who enjoy late Victorian London, Sayers, Sherlock Holmes stories, and a page-turning tale will want to take this one home. --Nona Vero

    Book Description

From the magical mysteries of India to the gaslit streets of Victorian London, Mercedes Lackey's unique departure from her Valdemar series follows a young woman doctor as she searches for the secret behind the sorcery in her blood.

    Customer Reviews:

    3 out of 5 stars Almost there.......2007-04-22

Based on the fairy-tale "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs" (although I personally wouldn't make that reference because it makes you expect something that it's not) this story is in the time of the Suffragettes, in the heart of the movement, London. Maya Witherspoon enters England following the shocking death of her parents, an English doctor and Hindu mage, to establish herself as a physician. Inherited from her mother, Maya knows a bit of magic, which she uses to defend herself (she lives in the poorer side of town) and for small healings.

The English Masters of the White Lodge are not ignorant; they sense the magic and its foreign scent. They send Water Master Peter Scott to inspect the disturbance, and he is shocked to find a beautiful woman.
Immediately attracted, he begins to teach her what he knows about magic. Together, they soon suspect the presence of another outlander in London. An unwanted other.

With her seven pets to protect her, Maya sets about revisiting the past and discovering the truth of her parents' death, ultimately endangering herself. She soon finds she is in over her head, until all the mysteries are solved and she realizes what she needs to do to survive. What she needs to do to fight.

Eh. It was good, and it moved pretty fast, but I feel like there needed to be something more. It seemed like Maya's character was a little shallow, but Shivani's is the worst. She's so stereotypical and probably even a little offensive to the Hindu culture. I just wished for a more innovative character. Then I would've given it 4 stars!

But beyond that there's all the historical blabber. I know it sets the setting (ha), but I didn't like the Suffragette thing. It was all just too much.

All in all, it didn't bomb. Sure, there were some things that irked me, but it's still an enjoyable story. It's not much of a retelling, but more like its own original plot. For any Mercedes Lackey fans, you know what to expect, and you'll like it. I just didn't love it.

    5 out of 5 stars A Lovely Read.......2007-03-28

This book is pleasantly creepy. The spookiness of gaslit London and the romance of mystic India combine to make an atmospheric adventure. Nice details create a sense of being there. How I'd love a place like Maya's conservatory, complete with tropical plants and magical animals! The story isn't too fairy-taleish until the apple seller appears near the end. All in all the story is a fun read.

4 out of 5 stars Begining the Elemental Masters series with this one........2007-03-07

Back in those long ago days when I was a teen, I came across the work of Mercedes Lackey and her tales of young teenagers coming of age in a land of magic. But after a time, I became rather bored with her stories, seeing them as mostly the same tale being told over and over again, with very little change in the characters, and most of them being badly abused by their families -- a topic that had absolutely no interest for me. So I didn't bother with picking up her novels, until recently, when I read one of her adaptations of traditional fairy tales revised into tales of sorcery in Edwardian England -- a place and time that I am very fond of reading about.

And I was hooked. The settings and history, while sometimes skewed about a little from what I had known, were well detailed and full of colour, the characters were well drawn, and while some of Lackey's earlier flaws peeked through, the stories were enough to entertain me for an evening or two.

The first book that was published was The Serpent's Shadow. Set in London, in 1909, it's an England that is somewhat close to our own, but with a few vital twists. For one, Magic works, based around the idea of the four elements -- Earth, Air, Fire and Water -- and being able to draw on these forces, along with coaxing or commanding the help of the paranormal creatures that inhabit them. Into this world comes Maya Witherspoon, a young doctor from Delhi, India who is determined to not just practice medicine but to do everything that she can be able to.

But Maya isn't just a budding feminist, but also a magician. Accompanied by an assortment of pets -- an owl, a haruman monkey, a peacock and a pair of mongoose amoung them -- she has settled into one of the poorer parts of London, and woven spells of protection around her home. And Maya more to worry about than just coping with the male chauvinists in her profession -- for a family secret is literally haunting her, seeking to punish her for the sins of her parents -- an English doctor and a lovely Hindu woman, who defied society on both sides and married.

But she is not entirely alone, for when her magic attracts the attention of London's White Lodge, a Master of Water is sent to investigate. Peter Scott is a retired sea captain who now runs an antiquities shop and import business, and when he meets Maya there's a mutual attraction between them both.

Finally, there is the wider world outside of the one that Peter and Maya move in -- several other characters from the series make an appearance, from the leader of the White Lodge, Lord Alderscroft, who doesn't think that women have a place in the more formal world of magic; Lord Peter Almsley, Peter Scott's "twin" and fellow Water Master, and several other characters who make a very brief appearance. There are other touches of the 'modern' world, from the discovery of Tutankhamun's tomb, the intrusion of motorcars, and the Sufferagette movement, albeit not always in the familiar chronological order that we know them in. While the tone does get a bit strident at times, especially when it comes to the oppression of women, the lower classes, the poor, the Indians, and indeed, all minorities, it does lend to the realism of the story, and helped to create the sense of place and time.

The magic is also well done, working in touches of both Eastern and Western occultism, but the story isn't all about combat between rivals, but also has moments of pure colour -- most intriguing for me is the glimpse of the Selkies in Scotland.

While the story is certainly an old classic, and not that hard to figure out, I did like the way that Lackey gave it a twist or two. The biggest problem with the story is that the villains of the piece, the wicked Shivani, is pretty much a bloodthirsty one note throughout, determined to evict the English from India by any means possible, and preferably by sorcery -- unhappily, Lackey tends to do this, and it gives little balance to the story, as evil is so evil that it ends up being very flat. That's a pity, as with some more effort and care, Lackey could easily come up with intricate characters if she so chose to do so.

What I did like about this is that so far, each novel in the series that I've read has been a stand-alone. There is no need to have read the previous works to grasp what is going on, and while characters from the other books do make appearances, it's more of a cameo, rather than a full blown character.

I appriciate that Lackey is taking her time with this series, and trying to get it right, rather than just churning out yet another fantasy novel to meet her contractual obligations with her publishers.

    Recommended.

5 out of 5 stars Lovin Every Minute of It.......2007-01-14

I LOVE this book! Lackey does it again with taking a familiar tale and adding quite a bit of her own imagination to the mix to create something enchantingly new. After I read about Maya, I had to read about the others in the Elemental Masters series (I started reading this series rather late). Now I own the four that are published (and might have to buy new ones soon if my creases get any deeper) and am most eagerly waiting to see if Lackey will delight us with a fifth!

    5 out of 5 stars A Eurasian Fairytale?.......2006-08-12

The Serpent's Shadow (2001) is the first Fantasy novel in the Elemental Masters series. In this volume, Miss Maya Witherspoon has come to Edwardian England to escape enemies in India. The daughter of an English physician and a Brahmin healer, Maya was her father's assistant from her teens and later trained in medicine in that country. Her mother, however, refused to teach her the magic of her homeland, insisting that Maya learn the magic of her father's country.

Maya fled from India to escape her mother's twin sister; she just didn't have enough power to confront this enemy who may have killed her mother and who has certainly killed her father. She has also brought with her a few of her household -- Gupta and his son, daughter-in-law and grandchildren -- as well as her mother's pets. Using her mother's jewelry, she has bought a house in the East End and has converted it into an office and home. She has also placed as much protection on the property as possible with her few magical skills.

Amelia Drew is Maya's friend and a fervent suffragette who is studying at the London School of Medicine for Women. She keeps trying to get Maya to march in the "Votes for Women" rallies, but Maya keeps refusing her invitations. Then women on a hunger strike are force-fed and one of them dies from the crude technique. Maya is familiar with this cruel method and joins the march out of protest at this denial of basic liberties.

Peter Scott is the former master of a merchant vessel and is now the owner of an import shop dealing in Egyptian wares. When asked by the head of the White Lodge in London to locate the source of a magical disturbance in the East End, Scott tracks down the magical emanations to Maya's office/home. He goes into the building requesting help with his bad knee, but gives himself away when he first comes face to face with Maya.

After his initial moment of astonishment and delight, Scott confesses his ruse and eventually tells all. After an extended discussion, he realizes that Maya is an untrained mage. Since she is a half-blood, no reputable guru in India would accept her as a chela; thus, while she practices magic, her works are a patchwork of various enchantments that she has picked up on the streets.

Scott convinces her to let him instruct her in the basics of Elemental Magic. Gupta is exceedingly pleased, since he knows that she will need such powers to face her aunt. As Scott begins teaching her the basics of Western magic, he also begins to see Maya as a lovely young lady and gradually falls in love with her. Unknown to him, Maya is beginning to feel the same love for him.

This novel is about the plight of women in English society under Edward VII. Not only did women not have the right to vote, but were treated essentially as chattel, first to their fathers and then to their husbands. If their fathers and husbands died, then they were prey to any man willing to have them declared incompetent in court. Obviously the first step had to be getting the vote so as to change the laws!

The similarities between this story and the fairytale of Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs is very slight. Aside from a mirror-slave and a witch selling apples, the storyline is nothing like that of the fairytale. Indeed, the role of the seven pets was not anything like that of the seven dwarves; these "pets" were actually the avatars of hindu gods.

BTW, India has fairytales of its own. A great many fairytales from the varied cultures and religions of this subcontinent. Maybe the author will import a few to this country.

Highly recommended for Lackey fans and for anyone else who enjoys tales of magic, women's liberation and romance.
