excellent.......2007-08-13
I have used this book since the first addition and give it out to all new engineers coming into the pipeline industry, when they are envolved in costs for new piping projects.
An estimating book for all industry.......2004-10-22
I have used this book since 1986. It has been the cornerstone of my pipe estimating. It is easy to use and in most cases you can narrow a seemingly complicated estimating job down to a few tables. I recommend this book to any estimator charged with providing accurate budgets in industrial construction.
The book addresses carbon steel, stainless steel Heavy wall, large O.D. Staging, Insulation, Pipe Hangers and more.
The Author goes into detail in a clear and concise method about how to structure your estimate and provides a sample estimating sheet.
Even though the estimating sheet is about 30 yrs old. I have set one up in excel to match his format and it works beautifully.
A must book for any pipe estimator.

From the Book - Preface:
This manual has been compiled to provide time frames, labor crews and equipment spreads to assist the estimator in capsulizing an estimate for the installation of cross-country pipelines, marshland pipelines, nearshore and surf zone pipelines, submerged pipelines, wharfs, jetties, dock facilities, single-point morring terminals, offshore drilling and production platforms and equipment and appurtenances installed thereon.
The time frames and labor and equipment spreads which appear throughout this manual are the result of many time and method studies conducted under varied conditions and at locations throughout the world; these time frames and labor and equipment spreads reflect a complete, unbiased view of all operations involved.
When one is engaged in compiling an estimate from any information furnished by others, as is the case with this manual, he should view it in an objective light, giving due consideration to the nature of the project at hand and evaluating all items that may affect the productivity of labor and all other elements involved.

Book Description
Pulitzer Prize-winning writer and illustrator Art Spiegelman joins forces with designer Chip Kidd to pay homage to the comic book hero Plastic Man and his creator, Jack Cole. Plastic Man is more than just a putty face--with his bad-boy past, he literally embodies the comic book form: the exuberant energy, flexibility, boyishness, and subtle hints of sexuality. And as cartoonists "become" each character they create, it can be said that Jack Cole himself resembles Plastic Man. Cole revealed the true magnitude and intensity of his imagination and inner thoughts as Plastic Man slithered from panel to panel--shifting forms and dashing from male to female, or freely morphing from a stiff upright figure to a being as soft as a Dali clock. With a compelling history, a V-necked red rubber leotard, a black-and-yellow striped belt, and very cool tinted goggles, Plastic Man is truly a cult classic, and this art-packed book will delight any fan.

An all American boy.......2006-11-09
In his short life, Jack Cole, a hick from New Castle, Pa., managed to find himself at the center of three of the premiere cultural events of the 20th century.
As a youngster just before World War II, he developed the goofy, idiosyncratic Plastic Man comic character, which remains among the most admired strips of the Golden Age of pulp, though Cole drew his last Plas in 1950.
About then, too, a single panel of Cole's in another comic, True Crime, became the prime exhibit in one of the McCarthyite Congress's more ridiculous crusades, the one that said comix were sending our youth to hell. This brought the Golden Age of comix and the Linoleum Age of Congress to an end.
After that, Cole -- now using a completely different medium (water color) and style -- became the signature artist of the new Playboy magazine.
And not long after that, he shot himself, for reasons none of his friends could quite guess.
Art Spiegelman, who brought comix to their highest peak of respectability (at least in the eyes of people who never read comix) with his "Maus" comix about the Holocaust, wrote a sensitive and complex appreciation of Cole and Plas in The New Yorker in 1999, and that text is reprinted here, along with a generous selection of Cole's output.
This includes several adventures of Plas and his sidekick Woozy Winks, which rival Fontaine Fox's Toonerville Trolley strips, if not quite George Herriman's Krazy Kat, in wackiness; as well as Congress' favorite panel (a hypodermic needle aimed at a woman's eye) and the rest of that whole episode, "Murder, Morphine and Me."
"Murder, Morphine and Me" is no raunchier than the TV ads placed by the National Institutes of Mental Health ("This is your brain on drugs") nowadays, but Cole was always before his time.
Cole represented that nose-thumbing, razzberry-blowing strain of sez-who? Americanism that has just about been stamped out today, when we need it badly. If not the greatest, he was perhaps the most characteristic American limner of his generation.
This collection was designed by Chip Kidd, in a sort of paper version of MTV film editing. Plas, always frenetic, holds up very well to this kind of contemporary treatment.
A hero for the ages.
Jack Cole the real Plastic Man.......2003-11-04
Biographies of comic creators are few and far apart. This by a short reach is the best of the lot. It contains all the stories we have heard about Cole (his bike trip across America, his Playboy years, his mysterous suicide).
Interlaced through are reprints of some of his best works. What I liked was that the comics within seem to be reproduced from the originals, yellowing and all. If anything it added to my pleasure instead of took away from it.
For fans of comic history or tragic artists this is the one book that must be on your shelf. See Jack Cole stretch his mind as far as Plastic Man stretched his body.
Cole Mine.......2003-02-14
Jack Cole is better served by this fairly strange book than many other great cartoonists of the golden age of the medium have been in print. Spiegelman's somewhat sparse text is full of useful information and valid critique, but he wisely lets the material speak for itself, and that's the main attraction here, though those words and the book's design seem to have distracted some readers. This is not an anthology of "Plastic Man"- that can be found elsewhere, fortunately- nor is it an in-depth biography of Jack Cole. It's more like a large catalogue for an exhibition, covering all aspects of his varied career. Material seems to be reproduced from original art in a few cases- mainly his Playboy stuff- but the comic book stories are shot from original issues, with four-color separation and page-yellowing quite evident- and speaking as a sometimes-comic artist, that's close to the way I think they should be seen (I HATE modern re-coloring, and especially airbrushes!). And as for the book's unconventional design.....I like it. (Would've preferred a hardcover, though!)
Not to stretch a point, but..........2002-08-09
I've bought and read many, many books dealing with comics history, and this volume is one that proudly sits with the rest of the collection! If you have even the slightest interest in the Golden Age of Comics, Jack Cole or Plastic Man, you definitely owe it to yourself to get this book (and Amazon's offering it cheaper than I got my copy!). There are several complete Plas stories included in this book, making it worth the price by itself, but the retrospective of Jack Cole's career also makes for fascinating reading. I couldn't put it down, read the thing in one sitting!
Draft Portrait of the Artist.......2002-06-26
This biography/retrospective of cartoonist Jack Cole is certainly eye-catching with its chaotic design, popping full-bleed artwork, rounded corners, and varying paper stock, but as a portrait of the artist it never really amounts to more than a draft sketch. Spiegelman's text is slightly expanded from an article he wrote in 1999 for The New Yorker, and while it's a fairly decent biographical sketch of Cole's life and career as creator of Plastic Man, Playboy illustrator, and syndicated cartoonist, it never does more than skim the surface. Most indicative of this is the skimpy treatment Cole's unexpected and unexplained suicide is accorded. It's clear that Spiegelman (creator of the acclaimed Maus) loves Cole's work, but other than some generic plaudits that could apply to a number of cartoonists, it's never really clear why he considers Cole a genius (or for that matter, why the reader should).
A graphic tribute it's more successful, combining reproductions of complete strips and stories (including the True Crime Comics classic "Murder, Morphine, and Me"), pieces from Playboy, family photos, unpublished sketches, covers, and collages. Some people are bound to hate renowned book designer Kidd's treatment of the material (and indeed, some of the text is a strain to read), but it seems wholly suitable to Cole's own frantic graphic style from the Plastic Man series. In the end, the book is unlikely to appeal to those outside the world of comics.

Not really a fan of this style or of Plastic Man but..........2007-07-03
I am not really a fan of either Plastic Man or of Kyle Baker's over the top Ren and Stimpy-esque cartoon style. However, I had to pick up the plastic book with Plastic Man all over it so that it looks like you are actually holding Plastic Man trying to hide out as the book itself!
Once I started reading this one, I must admit that I got into it. The artistic style grew on me and Plastic Man became less annoying (sort of...). This one is full of lots of sight gags and off-color comments and references.
I was entertained and that's all that counts. I give it a "B".
Plastic Man as he should be.......2005-04-08
When I saw "Plastic Man: On the Lam" I originally passed it over because the cover is absolutely horrible. The cover is supposed to look as if it's composed of Plastic Man's stretched body. It's even literally made of plastic but it looks really bad which is a shame because the contents are terrific. The reason I purchased the book was because the series won the Eisner award for best new series and I've tended to do well with Eisner award winners.
On the Lam is a compilation of the first six issues of the recent Plastic Man series, written and drawn by Kyle Baker. My first and only experience with Kyle Baker's talent was a pair of short pieces done for the Bizarro books. Kyle has a very clean, bright artistic style that more resembles animation cells than comic panels. His only weakness is when he tries to draw realistic looking characters like in the brief appearance of the JLA.
One of the problems with writing Plastic Man is trying to keep Plas sufficiently goofy without turning him into a goofball. Some of the Justice League writers allowed him to descend deep into ridiculousness. Plastic Man, like Captain Marvel, really needs to be placed into his own separate world. Kyle does a great job of establishing the classic Plastic Man universe, balancing cartooniness with a bit of an edge. Poor Plas ends up taking quite a beating in this adventure. He's stretched with hooks, frozen, nearly suffocated, eaten by an alligator and has his rear end melted with acetate. There was always a certain darkness behind the colorful plastic wrapping, after all Plastic Man is one of the few heroes who started his career as a criminal. Seeing a dead man's head flattened or Woozy Winky bleeding after a severe beating is jarring but that's the way Plastic Man comics are and why he's such a unique character.
Kyle Baker's interpretation is one of the best I've seen. It's filled with legitimate humor and terrific art. I may be dense but somehow I didn't see the twist ending coming. Kudos to Kyle Baker for reinvigorating my interest in Plastic Man and kudos to DC Comics for releasing a truly unique and creative series.
Disappointing, to say the least.......2005-02-01
I just can't agree with the rave reviews of this book. I loved Plastic Man in the old Batman comics and in his own books, and Plastic Sam was unique in that it was one of the funniest Mad parodies yet still remained true to the original in a way that Mad's other victims couldn't claim. But the art here is simply pathetic! Yes, it packs a good laugh or two, but I find the lack of care put into backgrounds and lettering (apparently done by a computer program) to be unacceptable. Most backgrounds seem to be a simple color wash that could be anywhere.
STUNNING COMIC ART.......2005-01-02
Comic aficionados have a surprise in store with Eisner Award winner Kyle Baker's take on who else but PLASTIC MAN! (In a plastic cover).
Originally created in 1941 by Jack Cole Plastic Man was a flexible super hero, to say the least. He could bend, twist like a pretzel, contort his very pliable body into all kinds of shapes to make sure that good conquered evil. Plas, as he was known to friends was often found in the company of his pudgy buddy, Woozy Winks. Popular for perhaps 16 years, Plas is a cult favorite today.
With his reintroduction by Baker (who also copped the Harvey Award) Plas may gain a new following among both children and adults. Plastic Man holds the first six issue of this rubbery crusader's exploits.
Plas is in a jam as he's framed for a crime he didn't commit. Even his pals are convinced he's the guilty party with Superman exclaiming, "Plastic Man a criminal! By the moons of Krypton! How could we have been so blind?" It's easy to believe Plas has done wrong as he has a shady past - he was once known as no-gooder, Eel O'Brien.
With only Woozy to assist Plas has to find the real culprit.
Plastic Man as seen through the eyes of Kyle Baker is pure parody delivered in eye-popping color.

Fantastic trade.......2005-01-02
At first the Cartoony art might throw you, but it has a real heart, lot of laughs for sure, but a few real touching moments, i always loved plastic man but this trade showed me another side to him.
it's a great comic for kids as well as adults, the kids will love the humor, the art and the strange thinsg plastic man does, adults will love all that plus the jokes that may go over most kids heads, the mystery story, the few but well written sad moments, plastic man really is deep, he was a crook before he become a hero, all of that comes back to haunt him, and we find out why he acts liek he does.
and the cover to it is stunning, it's plastic, unlike all the other trades thta are paper covers, this is really plastic, it's kind of a gimmick, but it's liek the book, light hearted, fun and funny all in one.
I only hope we get a second trade collecting 7-12.

Customer Reviews:
They're terrific!.......2005-09-15
Jack Cole was one of the true geniuses of the comic book art form. Here we have some great examples of his masterwork, Plastic Man. Plastic Man and his sidekick Woozy Winks are two of the greatest characters of the Golden Age of comics. Jack Cole's odd outlook on life, and his sometimes dark sense of humor, make these among the best of the superhero comics of the era. Highly recommended to superhero fans, especially those who don't them too seriously.
A great blast from the past!.......2004-04-29
After a nice little introduction, this great DC archive book launches into the meat - thirteen Golden Age Plastic Man comics! With a good deal of action and humor (not to mention humorous action), Plas and his sidekick, Woozy Winks, take on the bad guys. My son and I loved this book, and thought it was a great blast from the past! We both highly recommend it!
In case you are interested, this book includes stories (in this order) from Police Comics #31 (6/1944), #32 (7/44), #33 (8/44), Plastic Man #2 (8/44), Police Comics #34 (9/44), #35 (10/44), #36 (11/44), #37 (12/44), #38 (1/45), and #39 (2/45). The funny thing is just how little World War 2 seems to have intruded into these stories! But, in a way, that helps make the stories somewhat timeless. Anyway, buy this book!

Cooking Healthy With a Man in Mind.......2006-03-04
Joanna Lund has made my life so much easier with her delicious and healthy recipes. The recipes in this cookbook are easy to make and the ingredients won't break the bank. Another winner by this author!
Quick & Easy Cooking.......2006-01-14
I believe this is a great cookbook for several reasons:
(1) The ingredients are easy to find & I'm likely to have them on hand; (2) The recipes are usually easy to prepare; (3) It teaches how to eat healthy and make simple, healthy substitutes; (4) Most recipes produce excellent tasting, hearty meals my husband enjoys.
Great for weight watchers, too!.......2003-07-14
With the calories, fat and fiber listed, Joanna's books are great to use on the weight watchers program, especially when you are too busy to cook the gourmet, time consuming recipies from the weight watchers folks. I don't mind using canned foods to prepare great tasting meals! I can eat my fresh fruits and veggies elsewhere- I want something hearty when I sit down at the table for dinner!
Helpful...but pretty boring.......2002-09-25
OK - has basic meals...nothing too fancy or adventurous. I bought this new months ago and have yet to cook something from it...just too boring to bother with.
I'm not a fan of soupy, goopy, skillet food...and there appears to be lots of that in here.
Fat out of your diet with food that taste good........2002-08-08
I am a man who has many health conditions--heart problem and diabetic--that require me to reduce the fat in my diet. I have tried all sorts of diets and fads that have come along to assist me. None have worked in the long term. Most are two difficult and time consumming to prepare with portion control that is not suitable to satisfy a man. The recipes in this book are easy to prepare and use the things right off the grocery store shelf. They are satisfying and I don't crave fat things. Ms. Lund states in her book that the preparation of the meal should not take longer than it does to eat it. I could not agree more.
I am a walking testament that the simple to prepare and tasty recipes in this book--especially the desserts--greatly reduce the fat in your diet. A side affect of Ms. Lund's recipes is that reducing the fat is causing me to lose weight without having to eat portions that will only satisfy a mouse. I recommend her book highly.

Plastic Man: The Greatest Super-Hero of All-Time!.......2007-07-18
These archives from DC are fantastic, I have the originals of the first two issues of Police Comics reprinted in this volume. Jack Cole who created Plastic Man was a brilliant artist and humorist. Lets just face it, Plastic man by all accounts has to be the greatest superhero of all-time. He is virtually indestructable, can shape himself into anything he wants, and has the keenest sense of humor too. Not to mention the groovy dark goggles. Even Batman has said as much. In theses volumes from DC, you'll find out the same thing. Great Read! The Plastic Man Archives, Vol. 5 (DC Archive Editions)
