Of course such branching can lead to very confusing jumbles of code unless the programmer makes an effort at structure, clarity and commenting.
If my recollection is correct (and I began programming with Fortran and Algol in the mid 60's), the above was about the only form of branching available in the earliest Fortran, but certainly by the late 60's programmers had less easily abused control statements such as IF..THEN..ELSE, as well as the functions and subroutines that had been used since the beginning or near it. Djikstra's shocking 1968 proposal was that programmers should be limited to a carefully defined set of such 'structured' tools, and the simple GOTO (who the heck knows what or where statement 275 is in the above example?) totally abandoned.
Overall, an excellent book for its history and observations on software development and its problems. I'd give those parts alone 5*, or maybe 4.5* for the occasional statement that seems a bit off, but because the story of Chandler and OSAF itself was mostly pretty dull, or at least unmotivated, to me, I'll knock it down to 4*. If office desktop managers really perk you up, you may enjoy it more fully than I did.
Interesting, but like the project it covers, the book rambles on with little focus.......2007-08-10
I bought this book based on a write-up in one of the trade mags. I found it interesting. It's quite a mix of IT historical anecdotes, project management insights, and programming and system architecture methodologies all woven around the story of OASF's Chandler PIM project. However, in the end, like the project it covers, it suffers from lack of structure and overall focus. It rambles on, and the musings and tangents occasionally stray far. There is a "stuck in limbo" quality to the story telling as there is with the project. Eventually the author has to reach some sort of closure, which is abrupt and forced. Overall, I enjoyed the tale. I have a formal IT background and enjoyed revisiting many of the concepts reviewed. However, by the end, it was getting to be a tedious read.

In their excellent (and hefty) resource guide, The Baby Book, attachment parenting specialists William Sears and Martha Sears have provided new parents with their approach to every aspect of baby care basics, from newborns to toddlers. Attachment parenting is a gentle, reasonable approach to parenting that stresses bonding with your baby, responding to her cues, breastfeeding, "wearing" your baby, and sharing sleep with your child. For those parents who worry about negative effects of this attention, the Sears say, "Spoiling is what happens when you leave something (or some person) alone on the shelf--it spoils."

Customer Reviews:
take this book seriously & your life might be a mess!.......2007-10-09
I would NOT recommend this book for starting out in parenting. My husband and I just had this book for the first few months of our baby's life. What I got out of the book was the author's ideas that the mom should breastfeed the baby (which I do support), carry the baby in a sling for at least four hours a day, feed the baby every time it fusses, rock the baby to sleep, hold the baby for 20 minutes until she's fully asleep then hope she doesn't wake up when you put her down. Then he talks about a sign in his office that says "The best gift you can a baby is a well rested mother."
His ideas had me teaching the baby not to sleep the night, no routine or expectations, baby was not napping, and had my whole family exhausted and wondering if we were going to live through this!
Luckily, when our baby was four months old a friend lent me "The Baby Whisperer." We soon had a great flexible routine, baby slept through the night, and everyone was happier-including baby! I've also heard many great things about "Baby Wise."
The book has helpful information in the back about illnesses and medicine in the back - I would only buy the book for that. (The book is also very against bottle feeding, so don't look for any support there!)
Thorough and Loving.......2007-10-08
I got this book when my baby was eight months old, and I heartily wish I had gotten it sooner. I had been basically following the attachment parenting model without even realizing it, but at times, people would make me feel guilty about it. It's amazing that people can be against (what seemed to me to be) natural baby caring principals like picking him up when he cries (and even when he doesn't!), soothing him back to sleep, wearing him around instead of leaving him in some sort of mother substitute (seat, swing, etc), sleeping with him some of the time, and the most natural thing of all, breastfeeding.
The hostile reviews of this book astound me. Dr. Sears comes right out and says that this style of parenting is not for everyone, and that you should pick and choose what parts work for you and what parts don't. The entire premise of the book is that mothers know how to care for their young, and that you should follow your instincts. As far as the father's role, I actually thought that he was adamant about getting the fathers involved. As a single mother, I was wondering sometimes, what am I supposed to do about [some problem that he solved with the father helping]?
No where in the book can I find this "my way or the highway" that some reviewers talked about. This is the only baby book that I've read that really acknowledged that all babies are different and no one method can be applied to all of them. The section on high-need babies was worth it's weight in gold. How many mothers of these kinds of babies (myself included) have suffered from the just-put-him-down-and-he'll-get-over-it parenting advice. Some babies might stand for that, but high need babies? Hell no! And other baby books will say that this is most definitely the parents fault without even nodding a head to the fact that babies have totally different personalities and demand different styles of care.
Dr. Sears approach to parenting is not for the parents who believe that children are basically a nuisance and need to stay in their place. Having a baby is not like it is on television, it completely changes your life. But his principals are not some sort of formula that are set in stone, they are a just seven things that are good for babies, and I take them at that and do them to the extent that I am able and my son responds to them.
Parenting styles aside, this is an invaluable information resource. I have the mayo clinic baby care book and this is way more thorough (and interesting to read) then that.
Every expectant Mom needs this book!.......2007-10-03
Anyone that is excecting should have this book in their collection. I read every page before my daughter was born (when I actually had time) and referred to it many times in her first year. It has good sound advice and isn't too weird. I like the excerpts of his wife detailing actual situations they encountered while raising their children. It is easy to find information and is, in my opinion, one of the best books on the market for baby's first year. Would recommend highly!
Baby Bible!.......2007-10-01
This is my official shower gift for new moms. I used this on at least a weekly basis when my baby was first born (sometimes at 3am!). It totally saved my life that year and answered SO many questions. I don't totally agree with every single thing that Sears says, but like with anything you take what you need. This has a lot of good information and comforted me when I wanted to just freak out about something (like green poo - totally normal).
A great resource for "attachment parenting"-friendly parents.......2007-09-29
This was one of the most useful "baby" books in my extensive collection - I referred to it over and over again for a wide range of issues, from fevers to sleep problems. Each time I opened it I would find helpful, child-friendly information from a source that seemed warm and sympathetic towards me and my parenting challenges. I was reluctant to pass this book on to my sister when she had a baby, as I did most other books of this type, since I was still finding it useful in toddler-hood; fortunately, she was given a copy by someone else so I didn't need to part with it. "The Baby Book" became her most-referenced book as well.
That said, I can see how some people would be put off by this book. It definitely describes mother-oriented parenting in its promotion of breastfeeding (which my husband has, to his great happiness, not been able to attempt). My husband is the main caregiver in our family (stay-at-home dad) and I'm a work-at-home mom, and neither of us felt judged by any of the authors' books - but we're both pretty thick-skinned towards gender-role judgments. And after having our daughter it was clear that there was just no substitute for Mom sometimes - her behavior was consistent with the gender bias in the book. Whether that was because her two favorite things were located on my chest or for some subtler gender-based reason, I couldn't say. But sometimes the best thing that my husband could do for her was to bring her to me. Fortunately, he was fine with that.
The book did not seem as judgmental to me as it did to some other reviewers. Though the authors' preferences for co-sleeping are clear, they state that the best place for a baby to sleep is wherever the whole family gets the best night's sleep and describe various options. The same is true for breastfeeding - they express their (well substantiated) opinion that breastfeeding babies is optimal, but they do address how to bottle feed as well in the section "Bottlefeeding with Safety and Love." The area in which the book was probably most judgmental was on the subject of sleep training - the authors obviously consider cry-it-out methods to often be an insensitive way to treat a child and likely to cause parents to fail to respond to important needs of their baby. Even so, they address how to make sleep-training more responsive to the needs of the baby and say "We are not saying that the cry-it-out approach is always wrong, doesn't work, and you should never use it. Instead, we wish you to be careful about jumping right into this method before you deeply understand its ramifications and have carefully considered less drastic alternatives."
All-in-all this is an exceptionally useful book and one that I recommend to most new parents.

Book Description
This is the first sock knitting book devoted to teaching the simple mysteries of two-circular-needle-sock-knitting, a vastly more efficient and easier method which is rapidly gaining converts. Eleven original designs, clearly worded instructions, photographs, charts, a section on translating traditional patterns to the two-circular method, and abundant tips and tricks have been put together with great care and a generous sprinkling of humor. The author answers all of those subtle, almost unframeable questions a new sock knitter has, as well as delighting seasoned sock knitters with innovative sock architecture and techniques.
Customer Reviews:
A new method for knitting socks.......2007-07-27
This method of circular knitting is much simpler than dealing with the clumsiness of 4 or 5 double-pointed needles. However, a friend who has learned Bordhi's other method--Magic Loop--says it is even easier. I'd like to see the book(let) she's published about that available here as well.
Friendly tone. Nice introduction.......2007-07-25
I am brand new to sock knitting but have already learned that I don't love DPNs, so knitting socks on circular needles holds great appeal. This book has some helpful instructions and attractive patterns. I am finding it to be a good purchase. It is slender for it's cost.
Not worth it, but here's the one that so is..........2007-07-05
Working socks on two circular needles is great for socks. But this book does nothing to help the person who wants to be able to create socks for multiple sizes and then experiment with design and needle size or yarn or just want to do more than the few patterns in the book.
So I suggest Sensational Knitted Socks
This book is incredible. You can use the same pattern to knit on 4 DP needles, 5 DP needles, and 2 Circular needles. All the instructions are clear and concise. Plus the book allows you to make 1000's of different types of styles of socks. Combine different patterns to get great socks and challenging projects.
Not worth it.......2007-05-30
I was very disappointed on the content of this book compared to the cost. There are better sock knitting books for one-half the cost that have multiple sock sizes, great graphics, colored photos and easy to read charts and instructions. The publisher should have allowed us to see inside the book - something missing on so many knitting books on this site! The 2 needle technique is very interesting but not worth the price of the book. Check it out at your local library.
Love it, but.......2007-05-28
This book woud rate 5 stars if only there were a couple more pictures showing how to use two circulars. I had to look at my copy of "Sensational Knitted Socks" (which credits the method to Cat Bordhi) to see how to do it. Now that I have it figured out (and it is really simple) I just love this method and use it a lot. This book is worth buying for the patterns alone - especially the Leaf and Tendril Socks and the Two Alert Cats. Cat's writing style makes the book worth having, also. I read that she is coming out with a new book of two circular patterns, and I do hope that it includes better pictures.

I've been looking for this for 30 years..........2007-10-09
I have purchased thousands and thousands of dollars worth of cooking stuff looking for the magic item that would take food from the cupboard and place it cooked and delicious on the table. I hate to cook, but with this book and a 1-1/2 quart cooker I look forward to cooking and eating. All of the ingredients are fresh and easy to obtain.
I just ordered the 3 quart cooker, and wish I had done so up front; there are several recipes that won't go in the smaller size, and I don't want to miss any of them.
I only wish I had discovered this when my son was at home. When I think of what he had to endure... To make up for it, I'll give him the small cooker and copy of this book.
Perfect for working singles and couples.......2007-10-01
As someone who lives alone and works extremely long hours, I don't always have a lot of time to cook. Unfortunately, I had begun to rely on either fast food (unhealthy) or convenience foods from the supermarket (expensive). Purchasing this book and a $15.00 dollar oval slow cooker has done wonders for my schedule, my budget, and my LDL cholesterol.
Just what I was looking for.......2007-08-19
This cookbook is perfect for my daughter, who has just gotten her first apartment. With winter coming, I know she has the "tool" she needs to whip up her favorite soups, stews and chilis or simply to have a nice home-cooked meal ready for her when she returns from a full day of classes.
Delicious Recipes for 2!.......2007-08-02
This book is great for two people: it's the perfect amount for my boyfriend and I. We bought the 4-Quart Rival slow cooker (I wanted the option to cook for more people) which is a little larger than the ones she recommends, but so far, everything has tasted great. Some dishes we have tried:
Vegetable Chili con Carne: This tasted great and it's a great way to get your day's worth of veggies (also includes lean ground beef). Usually chilis are all meat, beans, or veggies--this is a little bit of everything for a well-balanced meal.
Vegetable Polenta: Made this last night with some grilled pork and a salad--it was excellent! The mascarpone cheese adds a creamy flavor, which makes this polenta perfect.
Orange Teriyaki Chicken- The flavors of this chicken are so flavorful and they compliment each other well. Be careful not to overcook as I did, but still the chicken is so moist and flavorful that it almost didn't matter.
Hot Pepper Cornbread (non-slow cooker recipe): This bread accompanied our veggie chili and was good but it turned out a little flat--next time I would add a little more baking soda than the pinch it calls for.
Overall, this book is easy enough for a beginner cook and for those who don't want to prepare an army's worth of food.
good value.......2007-07-27
Every recipe I have tried has been a success, although the serving sizes
are certainly more than two people can usually eat. Absolutely worth it!

Book Description
Waiting for Daisy is about loss, love, anger and redemption. It’s about doing all the things you swore you’d never do to get something you hadn’t even been sure you wanted. It’s about being a woman in a confusing, contradictory time. It’s about testing the limits of a loving marriage. And it’s about trying (and trying and trying) to have a baby.
Orenstein’s story begins when she tells her new husband that she’s not sure she ever wants to be a mother; it ends six years later after she’s done almost everything humanly possible to achieve that goal, from “fertility sex” to escalating infertility treatments to New Age remedies to forays into international adoption. Her saga unfolds just as professional women are warned by the media to heed the ticking of their biological clocks, and just as fertility clinics have become a boom industry, with over two million women a year seeking them out. Buffeted by one jaw-dropping obstacle after another, Orenstein seeks answers both medical and spiritual in America and Asia, along the way visiting an old flame who’s now the father of fifteen, and discovering in Japan a ritual of surprising solace. All the while she tries to hold onto a marriage threatened by cycles, appointments, procedures and disappointments. Waiting for Daisy is an honest, wryly funny report from the front, an intimate page-turner that illuminates the ambivalence, obsession, and sacrifice that characterize so many modern women’s lives.
Customer Reviews:
Fantastic: Reminds me of "Eat, Pray, Love".......2007-10-03
I thoroughly enjoyed this book-- surprisingly, because I didn't have any personal experience with infertility. I do have many friends and relatives with these experiences, so I was curious to understand more about what they're going through. The author is a brilliant and clever writer-- I loved her "voice"-- it reminded me of Elizabeth Gilbert's "Eat, Pray, Love." She's funny, honest and insightful. This was actually a page-turner-- not what I would have thought for this type of memoir. I LOVED this book and I'm recommending it to all my friends.
Waiting for Daisy .......2007-09-25
This book was difficult to read. Author was cold, hard to connect with and not easy to agree with. Definitely not like-able or personable. Very selfish individual. I hope she raises Daisy to Not be like her.
Highly recommended for those feeling alone or isolated in their fertility journey!.......2007-09-24
This book was a God-send to me in my own painful infertility journey. Peggy's descriptions of her mental states expressed my own, but in ways I could not put words to. From her initial ambivalence about parenthood, to all-consuming obsessions with achieving it, her relations with her husband, and frustrations with fertility specialists, her journey affirmed that I was not alone in my journey. Her sense of humor and wit actually made me giggle a few times and, mostly, helped me feel so much less alone. I would highly recommend this book!!
A wonderful book.......2007-09-19
I read this book all in one evening. I loved every page of it. I have read just about every book on this topic, but no one has described, with such accuracy and eloquence, the trying to conceive journey like Peggy Orenstein. I have not read another book that I feel deals better with this topic, especially in terms of being realistic. Nothing seems forced, her doubts and concerns are so vivid. She states everything that has been swimming around in my head in such a clear and honest way, that it actually helped me to organize my own feelings about this struggle. I would recommend this book to everyone going through infertility, and to everyone who knows someone going through infertility, and to everyone else for that matter. It is beautifully written; touching, but funny; sad, but hopeful. This is a book that everyone will be able to relate to in one way or another.
Poignant, funny, and on-the-mark!.......2007-09-13
Peggy Orenstein's portrayal of a quest for a child in "Waiting for Daisy" is candid and humorous. I enjoyed every chapter of this thought-provoking book. Orenstein's honest eloquence in expressing her feelings throughout her incredible journey moved me so much. Time and time again, I found myself thinking, "I thought I was the only one who felt that way!"
Whether you have ever been through any of Ms. Orenstein's challenges: cancer, infertility, IVF treatments, and adoption attempts, or whether you have simply felt somewhat ambivalent about parenthood.... this book is for you.
