2007 Potential Masters Student Doesn't Find This All That Helpful.......2007-09-11
At the time of this review, this books last revision was 10 years ago. Many things have changed in school's admission systems, and in other areas such as computer technology. That being said, a good bit of the book is completely outdated. Peters also chooses to focus HEAVILY on the areas that interest him, aka PHDs, Biology and English. If you aren't in interested in one of those 3 areas, you will find yourself skipping a lot of this book. As an Electrical Engineer interested in a MS degree, lots of the book were boring or skipped over. However, after all that ragging, I will say that the fundamentals of the book are strong. Advice on if you should consider grad school and steps to prepare for it are GENERALLY useful. However, I feel the book could updated and split into a PHD and Master's book that would better suit a wider audience.
Must have for any grad student.......2007-05-07
I absolutely loved this book. I got into 4 out of 5 of my choices because of this book. Yes, he is tough and the rhetoric does scare the reader, but the information he provides is real. You should be afraid and I think that fear is what helped me used his theories and suggestions so effectively. Academics are a difficult and frustrating career field so I'm glad he mentioned the downside of academic profession. The book traces everything: the application process, dissertation and thesis, and finally job search.
His essay section is great but I would still supplement his advice with an essay book. I found that when I wrote my essays they needed more direction than he provided. Also, his chapter on organization was a miss b/c he gave common sense advice, for example, he tells students how to organize their files and what type of organization materials are needed like Quicken. Many students have their own system that works for them and Quicken may not be apart of that. This section seemed a little dated.
I loved his inside look at academic politics b/c this is a large part of the learning experience. After spending a few months in my English program, I realized how important politics were among professors and department heads.
I think he provided wonderful hints, for example, before I graduated I researched major papers by the professors in my program. Even though this went a little overboard, I'm glad I did because it helped me see how my professors thought and what they believed in, deciding on classes became easier.
Should be required reading for anyone contemplating grad. school.......2007-03-28
This is the most useful book on the graduate school experience I have come across. One of my friends from college recommended it and I am so glad I bought it on Amazon! Peters does a thorough job of explaining the challenges of graduate student life while also offering helpful tips and pointers for overcoming these obstacles. I came away from this book knowing I wanted to go pursue graduate work, but having a much better sense of what kind of things to look for in a school. Now, when I talk about the grad. school admissions and thesis selection process to my friends who are currently in the thick of it, they wonder how I came to know so much about getting a Masters/PhD when I have yet to take the GRE!
The one criticism I have (as another reader alluded to) is that the technology section is VERY outdated. That is why I am giving this book four stars instead of five. A new edition is definitely in order. Aside from that chapter, the book is fantastic! Thank you Mr. Peters!
Honest Book.......2007-03-04
I have a bachelor's of science degree in Psychology, and I had every intention of going to graduate school for a Ph.D.
Until I read this book.
This book made me face some serious questions and real issues I wouldn't or couldn't face on my own. It makes some straight-forward points and tells the reader what to expect from Grad school.
The book also challenges the reader to ask him- or herself why he/she wants to go to grad school, and what he/she expects out of the experience. It also states what Grad school can give a student, but also what it cannot.
It tells you how to get in, how to stay in, the time it takes to complete a degree program, your odds of staying in, and your odds of finding a job in your field after you (finally) graduate.
"Getting What You Came For" is also certain to bring up the questions, "Is this what you really, really, truly want to do for the next X years?" and "Do you just like the look of 'Ph.D.' after your name?"
This book kept me from getting in and then dropping out of grad school. After reading it, I discovered I didn't want to go necessarily to become uber-educated, but because I wanted to be the authoritative source for ANY knowledge--and I liked the letters Ph.D.
A very expensive waste of time.......2006-11-15
The "updated" edition is incredibly outdated, especially the information on how to use technology to stay organized- I thought the entire purpose of a new edition was to add new information and resources! And then detailed instructions on how to use word processing software from 1988!! The rest of the book is mostly advice on how to kiss up to the faculty and how to make social contacts to advance your post-grad school career. This grad student was highly disappointed. Don't bother with this one.

Falls short on design.......2007-09-19
This textbook is aimed at graduate students but it is not good for an undergraduate course such as senior technical elective because it is very light on design considerations and design examples. No software is provided so the students will have to spend lots of time programming. Appendix 5 "Computer Programs for Laminate Analysis" is worthless; a one-page table listing Matlab, Mathcad, Maple, and references to commercial finite element programs, none of which are used in the textbook. The 3rd Edition only adds a chapter on "plates and beams" and another on "emerging composite materials"; if you have the 2nd edition you don't need a new copy.
Excellent overview of composite material performance and anlysis.......2007-07-04
This book is written in a very systematic manner and covers a broad range of composite materials performance starting from basic mechanics. Some contents are quite unique and I never found other composite books. For example, failure modes of composite materials are well-described and almost all-inclusive. This book shoould be a must read for the begginers who want to learn the subject of composite materials in a short time. Someone who understands the basic of composite and wants to do deep-down research, chapter 3 and 4 would be a great review for them.
Overall, I would rate this book as an excellent overview of performance and mechanics of composite materials.

According to authors John C. Friel and Linda D. Friel, all that is confused and painful about being a teenager today is captured in the "struggle to join grace and power." Through stories, examples, and carefully researched therapeutic techniques and theories, the authors write convincingly of teens' ability to succeed in today's world. They offer seven tips for young people--and those who care for them or work with them--to ponder and learn from: become competent, master your feelings, break the silence, get healthy power, face the serious stuff, find an identity, stake out the extremes.
Never patronizing--on the contrary, at times the writing seems almost too sophisticated for younger readers--the authors are thorough and thoughtful, presenting teens with options and offering tremendous support for some of the most difficult years. They address such heavy issues as abuse, eating disorders, depression, suicide, and violence, as well as the somewhat more abstract (yet no less critical) concerns, such as shame, power struggles, and the relative risks of the self-esteem movement. An interesting and possibly life-altering read for teens and those who know and love them by the authors of the national bestseller, The 7 Worst Things (Good) Parents Do. (Ages 12 and older) --Emilie Coulter
Book Description
In The Seven Worst Things Good Parents Do, therapists John and Linda Friel gave parents an easy-to-understand guide to overcome the seven worst mistakes even good parents make while raising children. Now they've written a book for teens based on the same formula: it includes the seven worst things even smart-and outwardly successful-teens do, and shows teens how they can change these behaviors and assure their success in life as they grow towards adulthood. This book was written expressly for teenagers as a unique roadmap into adulthood. It was designed to stimulate the brain as well as the heart because teenagers who listen to both can eventually negotiate adolescence successfully. It will appeal to teenagers who like to think, wonder, question and challenge, as well as to teenagers who feel that they haven't quite figured out this "life" thing. The Friels show teens the seven things they need to do in order to overcome common roadblocks they face or will face. These are: Become competent-don't expect to have self-esteem without becoming competent Master your feelings-don't let your feelings run the show Break the silence-don't silently scream instead of making yourself known Get healthy power-don't avoid learning about power Face the serious stuff-don't hide the really important things you're experiencing Find an identity-don't avoid the struggle to find yourself Learn to stake out the extremes-don't live only in the extremes. Written in clear, straightforward language and including many interesting and colorful story interludes, this book is an easy-to-use, powerful tool for all teens.

for parenting of your teen.......2001-11-03
This is definitely a book for parents although the title would imply it is for teens. There were several important points I found relevant to our family. Overall the ready was a little dry. I would recommend this book however, because the points we took to heart have deep implications for our teenager. Thanks
EXCELLENT CHOICE.......2001-01-05
This book was so excellent anbd inspiring. I loved it and learned so much from it. I would recomend this book to anyone. It is so real and relates to teens!
Book Description
Why do some firms continually make poor R&D decisions while others can deliver a stream of successful products and services? According to the Mathesons, successful firms have internalized the nine interlocking principles of smart R&D--the building blocks of a corporate culture that emphasize making the right strategic decisions at the right times, and aligning organizational practices to support these decisions and sustain their results. The nine principles include embracing uncertainty, opening information flows, and encouraging systems thinking. Once in place, these values enable companies to make appropriate choices about their R&D planning, portfolio management, and project strategies. The authors stress the importance of evaluating trade-offs, investigating alternatives, and getting buy-in across functions to ensure that decisions will be viable from both technological and managerial perspectives. They use best practice examples from companies including General Motors, Pilkington Glass, and BankOne of Ohio to demonstrate that the methods used to enrich R&D planning can be applied more broadly to create, in effect, the smart organization.

Great book with real life application.......2004-09-19
I bought this book with not much idea of what it has got for me.
As a went through some of the initial chapters I really got interested. The book has numerous examples and case studies. This really helps in understanding the concept and driving an analogy to actual life scenarios.
I strongly recommend reading this book.
Thanks.
Great book. If you liked the HBR article, you'll love this!.......1999-04-01
Frequently organizations face the challange of what not to do. They tend to believe in the person presenting the idea, rather then creating a rigorous process for evaluating the options before them. Companies adopting best practices in managing their investment options realize substantial gains in their long term bottem line. This book quantifies this performance difference, and what the best practices are across a range of industries.
Why aren't organizations more rigorous in selecting projects? The book outlines several barriers which are extremely relevent:
· It will make a popular champion look bad,
· Organizational resistance to change, or cannibalization of an existing business for a new opportunity,
· We confuse the urgent with the important,
· Its hard to agree on measures and success criteria
· People are afraid of making the wrong prediction, so they don't make any,
· Its hard to normalize results from different contributors,
· Business plans are not integrated with new project activity,
· Power and politics, a methodical evaluation leaves no room for interpretation and "behind the scenes" trade offs between groups and individuals,
· Lack of strategy.
The best practices outlined in this book are backed by substantial research. I would have like to have seen a few additional chapters on application of best practices in real companies ... a case study of a turn around.
Ideas in the book come to life!.......1998-11-12
Thank you very much for sending me a copy of The Smart Organization. I have completed only two chapters, but find the book to be thoroughly engaging. Especially, the six dimensions of decision quality.
My current job is proving to be a daily "case study." The ideas contained in the book have come to life, helping me to better understand my environment at work and make better decisions along the journey.
Great insights for all concerned with strategy and renewal........1998-07-31
Focusing on large R&D intensive organizations, this book explores nine key principles that make these enterprises effective, such as: open information flow, systems thinking, and continual learning. The author's emphasize the decision making process as a means of changing and improving overall organizational performance. If you are seeking new insights into how strategy is developed, excellence can be achieved in decision making, and organization renewal can be realized, you will find this book enlightening and fascinating reading. The insights offered here are by no means limited to high-technology firms; they apply to any organization seeking to be successful in today's fast-paced markets. This work includes an organizational IQ test (a diagnostic tool) for identifying root causes of the barriers to improving decision processes. There is an impressive amount of knowledge about organization to be gleaned in The Smart Company. Whether you are a technology -based bus! iness or not, you will find many nuggets in this work. We highly recommend it.
One of the best organising frameworks I've met.......1998-04-20
The Strategic Decisions Group framework for smart organisation is informative. One reason for this is that the authors are reporting a practical benchmark study of R&D which appears to include every American corporate I've ever heard of. They do readers the great favour of synthesising this into a 9 principle framework for Smart Organisation. 3 principles for achieving purpose: -continual learning -value creation culture -creating alternatives 3 principles for mobilizing resources: -open inforamtion flow -disciplined decision making -alignment and empowerment 3 principles for understaning environment: -systems thinking -embracing uncertainty -outside-in strategic perspective What I especially like is that for each principle 5 How do you knows? are given scaling the difference between an organisation which hasn't got a clue about the principle (not smart) to one that lives it (smart org) For example these are the 5 how-you-knows of alignment & empowerment: 1 Examine the strategies at different levels (eg technology strategy to portfolio strategy to project startegy). In smart org: there are clear strategies at all levels taht provide useful guidance for decision making. Strategies at one level are clearly linked to the next. Lower level strategies interpret and carry out the implementation of higher-level strategies. In not-smart: few strategies or they provide little guidance for decision-making. They are viewed cynically as corporate PR. Links among strategies are absent, unclear or ambiguous 2 Examine the value measures used to evaluate decisions at different levels. In smart org: there are clear measures of value at all levels. Value measures at one strategic level are clearly linked through the strategy to measures at the next level. In non-smart: There may be no value measures. If there are, each level sets its own values or decision criteria, with no special requirement that they be related to values and strategies at other levels. 3 Examine the approvals required to make or carry out important decisions. In smart org: Decisions require few approvals because people understand the strategy and are trusted to carry it out. Meetings with upper management are viewed as adding value. In not-smart: Decisions require many levels of approval. Review meetings are perceived as wasting time. Often meetings with upper management are feared because it may redirect efforts and change priorities without clear reason. Upper management often feels overloaded with the need to check on subordinates. 4 Examine the roles of people involved in an important recent decision. In smart orgs: Many people participated in the decision process,at multiple levels in the organisation. A dialogue was carried out in the process that continually aligned and refined the vertical links. Management at different levels collaborated to build a high quality decision and achieved aligned commitment to action. In non-smart: Either few people participated in the decision or so many did that the process got bogged down. Typically, lower level employees make proposals to upper levels for approval or rejection 5 Examine a recent decision that was controversial. In smart org: People unified around the decisions aand carried it out with little intervention. They understood the reasons for the decision and believe the organisation is carrying out a sensible strategy for creating value. In non-smart: The decision did not stick and was undone or remade over and over again. 100+ of us are discussing frameworks like these in a free e-mail group : Organising Creativity Network. e-mail me, Chris Macrae, at wcbn007@easynet.co.uk if you are passionately interested.

Thought provoking and educational.......2006-01-27
Reviewed by Irene Watson for Reader Views (1/06)
Much has been written about sexuality as well as theories have been formed about it. Most people seem to be curious about sexuality and want to explore the mysteries that are attached. However, not much has been revealed about the "why" certain behaviors occur until Dr. Aline Zoldbrod published her book "Sex Smart: How Your Childhood Shaped Your Sexual Life and What to do About it."
Zoldbrod explores the multidimensional nature of human sexuality by presenting information through a cognitive base as well as emphasizing skills in communication and self-awareness. She covers sexuality from biological, moral, psychological, and social perspectives with research, client experiences, and theory.
According to Zoldbrod, what is considered as "normal" sexual behavior is typically based on observations made of family and society. She explains that how we are treated or what parameters are set upon us during our childhood reflects on sexual development. Touch, trust, feeling good about the body as well as oneself are just of the few dynamics that shape the attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors.
"Sex Smart" gives the reader the opportunity to analyze, reflect, and come to terms with their own sexuality and behaviors through explanation and reading vignettes about experiences of others. After each chapter the reader can do exercises and self-assessments to become aware of their own issues and development. "Sex Smart" also gives the opportunity to examine the factors and decisions one has made in the past, and find ways to explore and replace them with new healthy patterns by re-writing the scripts brought down through the generations.
Although I highly recommend this book for every reader, it is necessary to note the importance of having a therapist at hand to discuss issues as they come during the reading and exercises of "Sex Smart." This is not a book to skim through in a day, nor is it a book to take lightly. It is a book that evokes much inner thought and exploration of behaviors and attitudes that have been framed within the identity of the reader.
Why had no one ever told me this before?!!!.......2006-01-06
For 15 years, I asked health care professionals, Why have I lost my interst in sex? Why do I love my husband as much as I do and yet increasingly fear intimacy with him? What's WRONG with ME?!! Until I read this book no one could give me the answers to questions I had given up asking. Dr. Zolbrod's one-on-one writing style and brief case studies helped me to see how much my parents attitude about their and my sexuality influenced me more the older I got and the longer I was married. The information within this book brought a level of understanding and new lines of communication my husband and I never had before. I have never been so grateful to find and read a book, and yes--this book changed my life.
Zolbrod is sex smart and street wise......A+!.......2005-05-15
Aline Zolbrod is a wonderful sex therapist. Turns out she's a wonderful writer too. Her book Sex Smart: How Your Childhood Shaped Your Sexual Life and What To Do About It is on my list of favorites. If you understand where you've come from, you can maximize where you're going. So accessible and easy to read. Wonderful suggestions for ways to be in the driver's seat of your sexuality.
Self-esteem about sexuality, enthusiasm for healthy sexual relationships-that's what this book is about. I recommend it whole-heartedly.
Wow! A review by Dr. Marianne Brandon.......2004-02-04
Wow! was my first reaction when reading Aline Zoldbrod's SexSmart. I am a clinical psychologist and certified sex therapist always in search of good reading material for my clients. SexSmart is tops on my list. On rare occasions I find a book that speaks the truth, dramatically enhancing a reader's understanding of self. If you buy this book, you are about to have this experience.
SexSmart isn't just another book on sexuality. SexSmart actually guides people through a personal understanding of who they are sexually - what a gift to readers wanting more for themselves and their sexuality. Readers can use this intensive exploration of how parental and social influences impact sexual expression to increase their current level of sexual satisfaction. It is in fact a book best read several times, as it is so full of great information. This is one of only a few books I keep available to my clients in the waiting room. I applaud Dr. Zoldbrod for a job well done!

For the vast majority of the young--from six months to eighteen years--sexuality is like a huge, unexplored continent. Each of us KNOWS that this mysterious, exciting, scary world is ours,
belongs to us. We know this from earliest times, when our own bodies--that do not lie--tell us, through powerful feelings and reactions, that there is a wonderfully rewarding world that is part of us. Inexplicably, our parents and important others, with their silence and shrouded denial, discourage us from exploration. The existence of sexuality is not exactly denied, it is treated as unlawful and we are reluctantly presented with the tip of the iceberg.
The result of this almost universal attitude is that even many
grown-ups remain uninformed about one of the most influential forces in our lives.
Dr. Aline P. Zoldbrod, an informed researcher and therapist in the world of sexuality, has written a marvelous guide to this unexplored world. She describes and explains all the various facts and practices of sexuality and turns this formerly dark continent into a healthy, known, and useful areas of life.
Dr. Zoldbrod explores nearly every aspect of sexuality and furnishes questionnaires to help the reader get personally specific about his or her own experiences, to clarify and help understand and deal with them.
She explores the spectrum of influences on sexual development from early, loving parenting to neglectful, abusive, and violent behavior. These descriptions are again equipped with detailed questions so the reader can relate to her and his own experience and make use of the suggestions about how to handle the associated feelings.
A few chapter headings suggest the inclusiveness of the book: The Touch of Love, The Foundation of Trust, Feeling Good About Your Body, What You Learned About Gender, Feeling Good About Yourself, The Dynamics of Power, Becoming a Social Person, Masturbation and Fantasy, The Changes of Adolescence, The Effects of Physical Violence on Sexuality.
This is a book you will read, and as you do, you will say to yourself, " I wish my parents had read this when I was young!"
As a couples and sex therapist who sees, every day, the consequences of sexual ignorance, I highly recommend this book.

Getting proper advice is the first step in having great skin, but finding truth amongst all the hype is easier said than done. Instead of relying on your favorite cosmetic counter or this week's magazine cover story, try starting with Audrey Kunin's The DERMAdoctor Skinstruction Manual; not only is it a great starting point for separating medical fact from pretty packaging, it covers nearly everything that can ever happen to your skin, from teenage acne to post-menopausal dryness.
Arranged alphabetically by topic, its design makes finding the information you need a breeze--and Kunin's casual, conversational style is enjoyably readable. If you've ever wished you could corner a dermatologist at a dinner party and ask about that odd little rash or bump that just won't go away, you'll love the tone. Along with clear explanations of a range of complaints, she provides an even broader range of possible solutions, including prescriptions to discuss with your doctor and simple over-the-counter remedies. Some are her own formulations; even more are not. Whatever the answer is to your problem, it'll be as practical as possible: None of those 19-step daily skincare routines here.
With her background in non-surgical cosmetic dermatology, she's quite open to treatments (like Botox and steroids) that some prefer to avoid. At the same time, her medical background provides her with a solid research base that allows readers to feel that they're getting accurate answers to questions like, "Is mad cow disease communicable via collagen injections?" or, "What's the minimum SPF to look for in sunscreen?" Whether you're trying to prevent skin cancer, control psoriasis or keep on top of your complexion throughout the coming years, Kunin's detailed advice will help get the job done. Jill Lightner

Info about all sorts of different skin care ailments!.......2007-07-28
I liked this book because it gives you an overview of so many different skin care problems, and it gave me tips about problems I didn't know I could fix. This is a good reference book to keep around, in case you get a new ailment that you need to learn about.
nothing fancy...the review i mean.......2007-07-17
This book in question is a masterpi...welll not quite. It is a very basic book. THis would be a great gift for a teenager. Or it would be a quick fun read for someone who knows nothing about skin care. Just like everyother book out there written by an expert expalining to non educated people.
Do not take that offensively. It's just a very basic book. Nothing fancy. But if you know nothing about skincare you'll learn from this book. If you know the basics, then it's a quick read. Entertaining as it is written by a woman who is bubbly. She is not serious at all, just fun to read.
Clever Infomercial .......2006-02-08
This book was written with the idea of promoting the author's own product line. Sad, because otherwise it is a well written book backed with a good clinical background. If you can get over her commercial intention it is an ok read.
An informative skincare encyclopedia!.......2006-01-01
I can't give it a five, because she does plug her own products. But having a mini-encyclopedia of skin diseases and conditions is a great thing. I wish I had purchased a book like this a long time ago. I have a dermatologist, but she doesn't take the time to really explain, in plain English, what is happening and why. The Dermadoctor does that for the kind of condition that you might seek help for (acne, eczema, hair loss, psoriasis) and also for somethings that we may not immediately seek help for, such as cellulite, cold sores, chapped lips, hives, and dandruff.
This isn't a book to read front-to-back, but if you are into healthy skin, I really think this is a great book to have around the house.
Great if you like infomercials...........2005-12-22
This book has some interesting superficial information about certain skin problems, but every time she suggests products for an affliction, she lists only her own product line, with the occasional prescription product thrown in. (Oddly enough, she often finds her own concoctions better, stronger, or less damaging [pick your adjective] than the prescription products--and forget any of those worthless skincare products you can pick up in department stores.) If you're just learning about different skin conditions, this book may be mildly helpful; but if you're a long-term acne sufferer, or fighter of wrinkles, you've most likely heard all this information from the plethora of skincare commercials already out there.
The next time I buy a book about dermatology, I'm going to look for an author who doesn't have his/her own skincare line to plug.

This is a thorough guide and one that makes it very difficult for a slacker to fall through the cracks. A must read for HR executives and anybody who wants to find out how to find the good ones.

I do recommend for those who hire for employment. Looking for a book that helps the client open up there reasons for wanting to own their own business.

This is a practical book for interviewing potential candidates for a job. However, the many tables and work throughs are a bit overboard. All in all, some good information but most people would only need to read a few relevant chapters.

Product Description
The thought behind this publication is to continue to develop an active research community dedicated to explore how Smart Homes and Health Telematics can foster independent living and offer an enhanced quality of life for ageing and disabled people. As we begin to witness the effects of changing demographics on todays society we begin to appreciate that the increase in the number of elderly and in the prevalence of those suffering from chronic disease and disabilities are likely to further increase in the next two to three decades. To react to the needs of this cohort - to provide an environment in which the people can reside for as long as possible, whilst maintaining their quality of life and independence - is a widespread concern for all. As such, there is real benefit to further investigate the role of technologies to address these changes and subsequently offer practical solutions to support independent living. The editors feel that within the realms of Smart Homes and Health Telematics real, affordable and useful services can be developed which will have the necessary underlying technological and service delivery infrastructures to allow seamless integration into existing care delivery paradigms. The introduction of technology can provide a positive impact. However, it is necessary to avoid any detrimental effects if reliance upon technology within the home environment becomes so great that people will not leave their own home in fear of losing the support once outside of the home, or its close proximity. This publication focuses on promoting personal autonomy and extending the quality of life by considering including smart services inside and outside of the home.

Book Description
** COMPLETELY UNAUTHORIZED **
Trekkies and Trekkers alike will get starry-eyed over this eclectic mix of essays on the groundbreaking original Star Trek series. Star Trek writers D. C. Fontana and David Gerrold, science fiction authors, such as Howard Weinstein, and various academics share behind-the-scenes anecdotes, discuss the show's enduring appeal and influence, and examine some of the classic features of the show, including Spock's irrationality, Scotty's pessimism, and the lack of seatbelts on the Enterprise. The impact of Star Trek on subsequent science-fiction television programs is explored, as well as how the show laid the foundation for the science fiction genre to break into the television medium.

Boarding the Enterprise.......2007-03-27
I enjoy this book because its like a bible of the 'inside information' on the specs and technical info about the Enterprise and the Federation. I enjoy writing fan-fiction, so this is a treasure chest of info.
