5 out of 5 stars This is amazing information and it does work!.......2006-09-12

I had a b/p of 130/90 -145/94 I am 55. I was suppose to go on lisinopril but every time I started to get the prescrip. I couldn't do it--it just felt wrong. So, I started researching high b/p and signed up for google alerts(on H/P) and one thing lead to another and to this book. I decided to get the book and follow it. I was never a salt-lover, just the opposite but when I started reading the labels of how much salt is in everything you buy--I was shocked.I would have been considered a "health nut"so, realizing that even by those standards, too much "salt" exsist even in Health Foods! I raised my potassium foods per day and added 300mg of Magnesium/potassium supplement by Country life. The drop in my b/p was amazing. It dropped to 115/72 to 117/75. BUT if I stray-- it goes right back up to the 130/90+ b/p. I am genetically thin-I only weight 100lbs. so being told I have high blood pressure was a shock. AND no one addressess H/P in thin people. Dr. Moore talks about "balance" and he is right-- for many people it does take maintaining a balance in your diet. If I eat out at restaurants all weekend--the b/p goes back up. That has been a real eye-opener to how sensitive someone's body can be to what you eat. I wish he had a website. There is so much about high B/P in the news lately and since he wrote this book in 1993 it would be good to have his current prof. opinion. He wrote this book before 120/80 was considered High! So, Dr. Moore if you ever read your reviews--please set up a website!

5 out of 5 stars It works!.......2004-04-13

This author maintains that blood pressure can be lowered naturally by maintaining a potassium to sodium ratio of 4/1 in your diet without using potassium supplements. I didn't believe it... until I tried it. Within a week, I went from 150/100 to 110/68. I can't wait to show to my doctor how well nutrition therapy works!!!

5 out of 5 stars It Works.......2000-11-25

I was given this book by my wife after struggling (unsuccessfully) with a sudden and dangerous rise in my bp. I went from a lifetime of normal readings to stage 4 hypertension (190/160) at age 39. Over the course of the next nine months, I was on a variety of anti-hypertensives -- three different bp meds simultaneously -- at high doses with only limited success and terrible side effects. I read this book and a month or so later, decided to give Dr. Moore's theory a try. I followed the K factor diet for three months and also quit drinking caffeine. My bp's plunged within weeks and after a few months, I was off all but one med and that was reduced to a very low dose. My doctors -- including a nephrologist -- were stunned by the results. I can't recommend it enough.

5 out of 5 stars A great book for people suffering hypertension.......2000-07-26

I was rushed to a hospital with a blood pressure of 175/110 at the age of 37 yrs. I was given a calcium channel blocker pill which reduced my BP to 140/90. Unfortunately it produces a side effect which I cannot stand. I was then given ace inhibitor (Hyzaar) which brought my BP to 120/70 but unfortunately produces a dizziness which was so intolerable I could hardly drive my car. Lastly the medication was changed to cozaar another ace inhibitor which produces a side effects of dizziness which was more tolerable.Anyway I tried to find a natural solution for my hypertension and found out that this book gives all the answer which was needed to reverse it. After four weeks of high K factor diet ( serum poassium at 4.9 ) I was able to half my BP pills at a BP of 110/75 and sometimes to 105/65. My aim now is to stopped my BP pills intake when it is safe to do so.

5 out of 5 stars Avoid the pills- do it naturally.......2000-07-22

This book details ways for a person with hypertension to lower their blood pressure using natural methods. Dr. Moore is an M.D. and PhD who has done years of research in this area. He concludes that a low level of potassium (K) is a major casue of hypertension. He gives dietary instructions on how to raise your potassium, and lower your sodium. The book is well documented and is very readable. It is an encouraging book for those who have hypertension, but want to try a treatment more natural than using prescription medications. I recommend it to my patients. Russell Tweet M.D.

Book Description

• Proves that the majority of cases of stroke, heart attack, and hypertension can easily be prevented by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet.

• Updated with scientific evidence from a recent Finnish study showing a 60 percent decline in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks.

• Provides a comprehensive program for balancing body chemistry at the cellular level.

High blood pressure is entirely preventable, without reliance on synthetic drugs. Dr. Moore's approach is simple: by maintaining the proper ratio of potassium to sodium in the diet, blood pressure can be regulated at the cellular level, preventing the development of hypertension and the high incidence of strokes and heart attacks associated with it. Dr. Moore updates this edition with a new preface reporting on the latest scientific research in support of his program. The most striking results come from Finland, where for several decades sodium chloride has been replaced nationwide with a commercial sodium/potassium mixture, resulting in a 60 percent decline nationwide in deaths attributed to strokes and heart attacks. Extrapolated to America, the Finnish statistics would mean 360,000 strokes prevented and 96,000 lives saved every year.

Dr. Moore makes it clear that high blood pressure is only one symptom of an entire systemic imbalance. He outlines a safe, effective program that focuses on nutrition, weight loss, and exercise to bring the entire body chemistry into balance. For those currently taking blood pressure medications, he includes a chapter on working with your physician to ensure that any reduction in hypertension drugs can be effected gradually and safely.

5 out of 5 stars A Splendid, Eye-Opening Book!.......2007-07-05

Richard Moore's book, "The High Blood Pressure Solution," is by no means perfect. The text is repetitive at times, for example. And the dietary program he recommends is sound, but sketchy; you'll probably find yourself hunting for additional materials -- low salt cook books, for example -- to round it out.

Despite that, I give this book 5 stars because it may just be one of the most important books of its kind ever written, a book that could conceivably save millions of lives if recognized and adopted worldwide. And there's every good reason why it should be: the science behind it is absolutely solid. Moore is not only a medical doctor, but ALSO a biophysicist, and this book well reflects that dual background.

A little of my own history may be instructive here. I first developed Stage I / II hypertension in the late 1990s, and did little about it. In April of 2002, I was sent to the ER with hypokalemia (low potassium). From that time until now (July, 2007), I obtained effectively NO help from any of the six doctors I consulted. My current provider is terrific in most ways, but even her help on this has been marginal. My complaint with all these people: though they proudly display their medical degrees, NONE had the slightest clue why I had developed high blood pressure. Not one could explain the hypokalemia, or how it related to my hypertension. Only one ever so much as mentioned diet, saying "You've cut back on salt, right? Good." None had any better idea on treatment but to ply me with expensive drugs that inflicted unending and often brutal side effects. Only my current -- and very caring -- provider took the time to discuss exercise and the critical role it can play.

I finally concluded that the word "essential" in the term "essential hypertension" really means, "We don't have a stinkin' clue."

And as Dr. Moore has now shown me, they were all wrong. A few medical researchers figured out long ago what causes most hypertension; an even larger number of researchers have known, for DECADES, the best course of treatment. Hint: it isn't drugs, and it doesn't require a super-human change in diet or lifestyle for most people. It does make demands, but as I've found they are not nearly so onerous as one might imagine.

Moore, who as a biophysicist spent his career investigating cellular level functions, explains in simple terms the role of sodium and potassium -- the two critical electrolytes -- in the life of every cell in your body. This is really just high school level science. Most people can grasp it, but it is technical. If that's not your thing, Dr. Moore provides chapter summaries and an invitation to skip the hard science parts. I ate it up, however, because for the first time I could see what has been going wrong with my body.

And knowledge is power. In just one week, adopting only a rough outline of his recommendations, I pulled my average BP down into a very safe zone ... something I'd not seen once in the previous 7 years despite all those medications. Those gains have continued, and I anticipate that in coming months I will bring it down further. The key to this is what Moore calls the K-Factor: the ratio of sodium to potassium that you consume. Americans frequently take in less potassium than sodium. Moore builds a case for aiming to reach a K-Factor of 4 (four times as much potassium as sodium each day). He also touches on other critical health issues, such as Type II diabetes ... conditions that may also benefit by adopting a high K-Factor diet.

Note that the author does not claim to have discovered any much of this. The work he and his colleagues did helped elucidate fine points in the knowledge of cell biology (he worked on the pH levels inside cells, for example). But what he HAS done is masterfully synthesize diverse findings drawn from the thousands upon thousands of scientific journal articles published over the decades. He weaves this into a coherent narrative, something no one else that I know of ever accomplished prior to Moore's work.

Before I read this book, I simply had no idea why I was suffering from hypertension. The vast majority of books, articles, and patient information pamphlets I'd read had simply said, "No one knows what causes most hypertension." Some books advance what I believe are half-baked arguments. Many are decent books, advocating fundamentally sound high-potassium, low-sodium diets, but usually based only on empirical observations ... a useful start, but not nearly as good as true science, which requires operative theories tested and ultimately winnowed down to one best theory that explains all observable data. THAT is what Moore's book is really about.

This is not just an academic distinction: by really understanding the mechanism, you can recognize that high blood pressure is merely one of a number of nasty symptoms of hypertension, and maybe not the most dangerous one. You can then set meaningful goals. So, for example, you won't end up just robotically eating a diet dictated to you; you can instead adopt one that aims to meet specific goals while giving you more options and flexibility ... keys to any kind of "lifestyle change" that you might actually hope to adopt for an entire lifetime.

Finally, I notice that several other reviewers had some unkind things to say about this book. Having plowed through MOST of the recent books on this topic that you'll find here at Amazon, I can tell you that Moore's book truly stands alone in the quality and exhaustiveness of his citations, and the fundamental logic he brings to the topic. One reviewer seemed almost enraged because his book is not the book she wanted to buy (rather like someone rating Harry Potter with one star only because it isn't about flying saucers). But her criticisms are largely unfair and inaccurate, in most cases suggesting she'd done no more than skim the actual book. Another reviewer claims Moore is flogging vegetarianism. But he most decidedly does NOT do that; he specifically notes that he lumps together vegans, vegetarians, and even folks who eat fish and lean meats sparingly. He makes it clear that ANY diet that gets you to a K-Factor of about 4 will mostly do the job, vegetarian or not.

Another reviewer praised this book, and marveled that it hadn't sold millions of copies. I concur. "The High Blood Pressure Solution" is a terrific and profoundly important book that can help you avoid hypertension, or defeat it if you already suffer from the malady.

1 out of 5 stars Beware of this book's generalities..........2006-12-12

Moore's assumption is of a "one size fits all". It simply is not true that hypertension is ALWAYS caused by too much sodium (or calcium), and/or too little potassium. As someone who tends to be calcium and sodium deficient, were I to be unaware of this fact and to follow his advice, I'd soon find myself, at the least, having episodes of seizures, and, at worse, not find myself at all, having died in the throes of a stroke. Imbalances do not only go in one direction. In consulting Moore's dietary list, I found it also interesting that the foods I cannot readily tolerate in my diet, causing ill-effects for me, are those listed as highest in potassium, which stands to reason.

I was also put off by Moore's dismissal of a genetic component in hypertension, which is certainly strongly indicated in my own family medical history. But my primary concern is that although he documents his own ideas/opinions, he fails to disclose the myriad of other studies which are at odds with those he cites.

It should be noted that although his book gives a website address, it does not exist, and a Google search offers no other.

5 out of 5 stars HIGH SODIUM=High blood pressure=Stroke.......2006-09-18

Potassium+sodium=HEALTH

This book did an excellent job teaching me why excessive sodium in the diet and lack of potassium leads to high blood pressure. I knew high sodium consumption was "bad" but I had no idea why until I read this book. I also had no idea the ridiculous amount of sodium we consume daily in a normal American diet when you start counting all sodium from processed foods, drinks, diet foods, fast foods, etc. it is shocking. The author showed how replacing table salt with potassium salt and the sodium salt used in processed foods with potassium salt in Finland reduced strokes and heart attacks by 60%!!! This books shows that balancing sodium and potassium in your diet is the key to lowering blood pressure not drugs.Reading this book caused me to lower my sodium intake by 50%, and I was already eating what I thought was a "healthy diet" Read this book it could save your life or some one you love, who is suffering from high blood pressure.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......2006-07-27

This book is amazing. It addresses more than just hypertension. It looks at the way blood pressure links up with diabetes, obesity, high cholesterol, and even the selective information (and disinformation) we receive from the corporate and medical establishment about this condition. As someone who works with stroke patients every single day, I can tell you the tragedy is real. Not allowing this simple, common sense message to be more widely disseminated is flat out unethical. This book does disseminate it. It is a light shining in the wilderness!
And parenthetically, it has helped me lower my blood pressure too!

5 out of 5 stars Tremendous!!!.......2005-12-05

I have been on blood pressure medication for over 15 years. I was first diagnosed with high BP when I was 24. I tried most of the BP medications and hated all of them. I had significant fatigue and lethargy with all of them. I read this book and took the recommendations with respect to a high potassium diet (high K factor). To make a long story short, I have been able to reduce the medication by 2/3. Realize that switching to this diet is not easy. But for me it was, as anything I felt would be better than continuing to take the toxic BP medication. I anticipate that I will be able to completely get off of them soon.

Book Description

The deliberate and often well-camouflaged addition of excess salt to processed foods has momentous health consequences, comparable in nature to the well-documented risks of smoking tobacco. Should our processed food come with a government health warning? The authors of this book provide a compelling and forceful account of these complex issues, teasing out fact from fantasy, and casting light on some of the hidden forces working to manipulate and exploit the consumer. This scientific detective story unravels with startling clarity how the evidence for the prosecution has been obfuscated, misinterpreted and even denigrated by some of the powerful vested interests of the multi-billion dollar food industry. Along the way, the authors illuminate the rich history and mythology associated with salt, its symbolism and manifold socio-economic consequences, all illustrated with an entertaining and eclectic selection of historical and contemporary illustrations. On the one hand this is a book with profound implications for public health, and on the other it is an entertaining and instructive account of a part of our diet that is too easily taken for granted, and ignored at our peril.

Customer Reviews:

2 out of 5 stars Good but contains errors and not sufficiently comprehensive.......2005-06-07

Professor MacGregor is to be applauded for his efforts at informing the public about the hidden salt in foods, especially in convenience foods, and for seeking to bring about a reduction in the levels of salt added to food by manufacturers. He and his co-author have enlarged on these matters and other aspects of salt in this book. Unfortunately two glaring errors render the book less than helpful to those most in danger of or most harmed by salt. No mention is made of obese steroid victims, whose weight gain is caused by sodium and water retention, and who would lose much of their excess weight by curtailing their salt intake. And the book states categorically that HRT does not cause these problems, whereas it is, sadly, many women's experience that HRT does indeed cause severe water retention and weight gain. Like the steroidees, obese HRT victims would also lose excess water/weight by curtailing salt intake. Let us hope that if a revised edition is produced these errors will be corrected and that it will also advise that patients taking steroids or HRT should be warned not to eat salt or foods containing salt while taking their medication.

5 out of 5 stars A Wonderful Important Book.......2003-01-14

Excuse the cliche, but everyone should read this book. After an interesting historical overview on human consumption of salt, the authors present a clear and compelling argument about the strong link between salt/sodium consumption and disease. I recommend that people interested in this should also read "The Salt Solution", which is perhaps a more accessible, shorter, and simpler book with a similar message. This book is an excellent companion to "The Salt Solution" because it lays out, in a more traditional academic style, the evidence from medical research studies published in reputable journals, the indisputable harmful effects of salt/sodium.

This is the book that you (or anyone skeptical of the salt/disease connection) would want to have if you were not satisfied with the credibility of typical trade books and, instead, wanted to see data, graphs, and careful arguments based on primary source research articles.

Also fascinating is the section on the salt industry and food processing industry response to efforts to educate the public about the dangers of salt consumption. These responses are eerily similar to those the tobacco industry ... perhaps not a surprise, given that many tobacco and food processing companies are owned by the same corporation and presumably employ the same lawyers and public relations teams. Read this book and you will realize that salt/sodium is bad stuff that is hidden in large quantities in many common foods. It could save you from early onset of heart disease, stroke, stomach cancer, osteoporosis, and other maladies that you can have some control over if you decide to become more salt-sodium aware. This book is a good start to doing that.

4 out of 5 stars It'll change the way you eat.......1999-06-24

Prior to reading this book, I considered myself to be quite partial to salt in meals; a regular dispenser of the white crystals from the receptacle on the table. I approached the subject as a skeptic, believing that our bodies cause us to partake of the right amount of salt to suit our needs.

After reading it, my behaviour changed markedly, and I find (as the book suggests will happen) that my "need" for salt has diminished.

The authors' argument proceeds as follows:

- Humans used to eat much less salt than they do now, and it is possible to prove a relationship between our larger intake today and the much higher rates of high blood pressure and concomitant diseases. Even today, in less advanced cultures where salt intake is less than 3g per day, high blood pressure is virtually unknown.

- High blood pressure is a central cause of heart attacks and strokes.

- Our physiological requirement is for only a small quantity of salt; the rest is "addiction".

- If you have high blood pressure, reducing your intake of salt modestly to 5g per day can have the effect of reducing your blood pressure. (Tips for measuring your daily intake are given)

- Excessive salt intake can also be linked with: fluid retention in women; certain forms of kidney disease; osteoporosis; kidney stones; carcinoma of the stomach; and asthma.

- A link between high blood pressure and salt intake is not a new idea. However, vested interests have conspired (with commercial food interests acting in much the same way as tobacco interests have done) to obstruct attempts to use this to encourage a reduction in salt intake.

Various peripheral subjects are explored in the book. For example, it deals extensively and humorously with the very central role salt has played in society in the past: a source of wealth and tax revenue, a symbol of wit, durability, friendship and virility. The book covers the history of salt extraction, and the evolution of now firmly established links between high blood pressure and heart disease and other associated conditions.

The thesis appears to be rigorously argued (though as a medical layman I cannot be the judge of that). Since it was published, the level of publicity about the dangers of salt appears to have increased, with some purveyors of processed foods committing to reduce the salt contents of their wares. For this reason, I would suggest that the book has stimulated debate on the subject; and that must be a good thing. If the links are as direct as is here suggested this may have prolonged some lives already.

Despite the fact that a wide view is taken of the subject of salt here: history, significance, health implications; this book is not all light reading. It is clearly not intended to be an academic paper for publication in a peer-review journal. However there are some parts which may seem heavy reading and somewhat difficult to understand at the first encounter for medical neophytes like me.

In summary: a powerful thesis, an interesting discussion of the subject, don't take it to the beach with you.

is this what canadian lit is about? im so darn disappointed. this macleolo guy seems so damn constipated why cant he just take a laxative, instead of purging on paper non-sense sentences where fullstops are absent. im sure a 6 year old can write better than him, and that too at least it will be readable. what kind of a great achievement is writing 11 short stories and one novel in thirty-something years. Alexandre Dumas wrote over 300 volumes in that time! Mr McLeod, I dont think writing is ur forte. Go write kids books...ull save their parents the money for sleeping pills!

5 out of 5 stars Story telling at its best.......2000-04-06

This is a collection of wonderful stories told by a master story teller in the old tradition. Unlike most other collections of stories these live in your ear. Most others live on the page. And these are truly American stories, but unlike anything you'll find in popular anthologies of contemporary North American short stories, because they reach far back into our immigrant consciousness in an elastic, unpretentious way. I choose Alistair MacLeod over John Updike any day to describe what it means to me to be American.

5 out of 5 stars A heart warming celebration of life in the face of adversity.......1998-09-28

On the surface 'The Lost Salt Gift of Blood' appears preoccupied with tragedy and death. However, read a little deeper and one finds it to be very life affirming. The themes of family, traditions, relationships, death, isolation and endurance echo throughout the short stories. The thematic parallels are skillfully woven into the fabric of the novel, highlighting that indeed, no one story can stand alone. It is worth reading!

    5 out of 5 stars enlightening reading.......1998-09-04

Written with great care, precision and meaning. You must read between the lines to get the most out of the book. Although all the stories revolve around death, grief, and pain, the focus on the life of the characters, rites of passage, and relationships is truly inspiring. I really enjoyed this book.

    5 out of 5 stars A boy's book.......2007-07-20

My sons loved having this book read to them. It is full of mystery, intrigue, and genuine battles that will draw a boy into the wonderful history of piracy and the high seas. The main character is of the utmost morals and my boys always begged for more as we read through the compelling, true account of life as Michael DeRyuter.

This book has been written with lay people in mind. Scala writes clearly, concisely and with humor while dealing with a most complex subject. Is he right? His recommendations have certainly worked for me. In a short time I have begun to lose weight and my blood pressure is moving down. Not only does the book contain very important facts about the relationship of nutrition to hypertension laced in with encouraging stories about some of his patients, he includes good recipes and suggested menus. I think it's good enough that I will not give up my library copy until Amazon locates a copy of this now hard to find book.

    Book Description

From one of Canada's most acclaimed short story writers, ten stories set amidst the stark beauty of Cape Breton.

    Customer Reviews:

    5 out of 5 stars Neglected Masterpiece.......2000-01-07

This is a modern masterpiece, much neglected even in Canada. MacLeod's writing is full of the "blas" (gaelic for "taste") that is or was Cape Breton. These stories are contemporary and ancient. Though they deal with modern issues and people, you can't help feeling these stories are very old. They reveal things unearthly and magical without ever taking their feet off the ground or closing their eyes. And there is a sad sense of loss that everyone close to things old and beautiful must feel in our modern culture.

5 out of 5 stars Rock your world.......1999-09-23

The raw emotional power I encountered within these stories sprang the off page like a fist, fracturing my complacency over and over. Nothing but Hemingway compares to Macleod's writing style.Uncomfortable truths lie here, expressed with such skill and economy that they elude memory, leaving the uneasy feeling that one has looked too deeply into a troubled soul and seen more than one should; it's hard to believe that the events described didn't happen, if not to the author, at least someone known to him.I believe there is no other writer in the English language with this mastery of short fiction.

Exalted's sourcebook on the Southwest. You get a fairly detailed description of the geography, politics, and culture of the kingdom of An-Teng and the Lintha pirates. An-Teng is based loosely on Colonized Southeast Asia, although I don't think the guy who wrote it actually knew anything about Southeast Asia. But who cares about that nerdiness, An-Teng would be a fun place to set a campaign of any nature.

There's also a Chapter on Lintha, but its off the wall in a bad way. I don't think I'll ever use it in a campaign.

Finally, there's an Antagonist Chapter, containing the usual array of Gods, Exalts, and plain old weirdoes. The antagonists are interesting, but I doubt many of them would challenge a Celestial Circle.

Overall an interesting book, but not as good as the rest of the line.
