Eighteen years after it first hit the shelves and having sold more than 10 million copies, What to Expect When You're Expecting is still on nearly every mother-to-be's reading list. This completely revised and updated edition is packed with answers to hundreds of questions and worries expectant parents may have. The information is presented in a month-by-month format starting with planning a pregnancy and choosing a practitioner, and follows through to six weeks after delivery. Each chapter begins with an explanation of what to expect at a particular month's prenatal visit and a brief description of how mom and baby are growing and changing before getting to the heart of the matter: What You May Be Concerned About. Topics are presented as questions ranging from "Should I be taking vitamins?" to "What if I forget everything I learn in childbirth education class?" to "Will I be able to breastfeed?" The answers are generally reassuring and provide enough information to soothe a worried mom between prenatal visits. Despite the reassuring answers, however, the sheer volume of worries discussed may alarm an otherwise calm mom-to-be.
The book also features a complete nutrition plan (though many women may find it difficult to follow), a special chapter just for expectant dads, and extensive information about dealing with minor illnesses, chronic conditions, and pregnancy complications. What to Expect has guided countless women through their pregnancies and makes an informative addition to the mainstream pregnancy and childbirth bookshelf. --Jennifer Lindsay
Customer Reviews:
If it's free, fine, but probably not worth more than four bucks.......2007-10-06
When I was not pregnant I thought of this as THE book for pregnant women. Once I got pregnant I realized that it left a lot of holes in the story, had a weird flow to it, and really only made two or three points over and over and over and over.
If you're looking for a gift for your baby-crazy friend who won't be having kids anytime really soon but still wants to dream, get this. If you want something for your pregnant friend, don't waste your money.
There are a million other books with actual information, organized in a logical manner, and displayed in a slightly less "friend-y" way. Please, go for them first and if you still feel like you need this one after reading a real reference (perhaps written by medical professionals) go ahead and buy this. But don't pay full price, I beg you.
MAKES PREMOM COMFORTABLE.......2007-10-04
good...understandable because it's based on writer's and other's experiences. you can read about pre mom's condition by month.
Don't get it!.......2007-10-04
This book almost drove me out of my mind. When it is not preaching at you about all the things you should do (like eat more vegetables than you can fathom while vomiting non-stop and wanting to eat nothing but fried chicken and rice), it is offending your intelligence with little nuggets of "wisdom," like telling you that if you drank one margarita before you knew you were pregnant, it probably doesn't matter, but you should stop drinking now. It states the obvious over and over, and I found it just was not all that helpful. Still, I read it from cover to cover, and I vowed to set it on fire the minute I got home from the hospital. My mother beat me to it, tossing it before the baby came. She said it was making me crazy, and the nurses at the hospital said that it makes EVERYONE crazy. I think the best thing to do is to listen to your health-care provider. This book made me feel very bad. Plus, that whole "earth mother" lady on the cover just annoyed me every time I saw her.
What To Expext When You're Expecting.......2007-10-02
I bought this for my daughter and she was thrilled! I heard on Dr. Phil's show that this is the new 'Bible' for pregnant women so I had to buy it. She is reading it as her pregnancy progresses. She says it goes into more detail on all subjects that other books she bought just mention lightly and go on to something else. She loves the depth of coverage on different aspects of pregnancy, what to expect, what is normal/abnormal. It's a GREAT book for the first time expecting mother.
Great.......2007-10-01
I really like this journal. There so many different things going on, it is so nice to have somewhere organized to write everything down. I also hope to keep this as a memory book later on.

Great if you have all day to cook..........2007-10-06
This is a recipe book, and that's it. Perfect if that's what you're looking for, but if you live in the real world and eat out from time to time there really are no good tips in here. Essentially what you get is, "cook for yourself" or "learn to punch your way out of a wet paper bag" (I choose the latter for hopefully obvious reasons). Thinking for yourself isn't overrated after all!
Great gift!.......2007-10-04
Purchased this book along with the "what to eat" publication as an early gift for a nervous mother-to-be. It was received with much appreciation by this first-time mommy who was seeking information in order to have a sucessful pregnancy and a healthy baby. A useful tool in gaining knowledge from one source rather searching thru many others. It's also something that can be appreciated as it is passed along to another mom-to-be.
Good Menu, but Very Expensive Ingredients.......2007-07-22
Buying 2 days of food using this cookbook cost over $90 in our local grocer. So while the recipes are good, we are using them in extreme moderation as many of the main ingredients are hard to come by and expensive.
A Definite Must-Have for Expectant Moms.......2007-07-22
I wish I would have had this during my first pregnancy. I had asked all of my health care professionals what I should eat and how I should take care of myself during that crucial time, but the standard reply was always, "Eat healthy and exercise." This book defines what eating healthy and taking care of yourself during pregnancy involves. It includes tips on weight gain, pre-pregnancy and postpartum nutrition, information on low carb and vegetarian diets as well as family-friendly recipes.
you know it anyway.......2007-01-15
Got this book by mistake. It is OK but there is nothing in it that you don't get at the ante netal classes. Would reccomend what to expect when your expecting instead.

WHAT TO EXPECT WHEN YOUR EXPECTING.......2007-09-21
It was purchased for my daughter-in-law. They are expecting their first child. She loves the book. It is and will be very helpful thru the next 7 months. She loves looking at the size of the baby as it grows. I would recomend it for any new to be Mom. It's a great gift for anyone you know who is expecting.
Invaluable during pregnancy!.......2007-09-21
I purchased this organizer for my first pregnancy and knew right away with my second pregnancy that I would buy it again! It is so helpful to have all my information in one place. It allows you to write in insurance information, doctor's contact information, results from tests, pregnancy wellness exams and much, much more. It really is invaluable! I loved looking back at my first pregnancy organizer and reminding myself of everything that occurred. There are other pregnancy organizers on the market, but I think this one is the most detailed.
Very handy! .......2007-08-21
I was mid pregnancy when they came out with the revised version of the organizer. I like the new version much better. It was very helpful for all of my questions I had as a first time mom. I highly recommend this book for any one who likes to keep things organized and want one place to keep track of all of their pregnancy needs. I will defiantly buy one again for my next pregnancy.
Could be better, but I still love mine.......2007-07-18
I have 4 kids and one of these for each of them. They made keeping track of what questions I had for the doc, weight changes, allowed meds, etc a lot easier. I don't think (as a first time mom) that I would've known just what to write down. As I've gone along with other pregnancies, I've learned to be more detailed in my writing and now go back to past journals as reference materials. Just when did heartburn kick in? When did I get to the point when I had trouble sleeping or rolling over?
The cons, as other reviewers have noted, mainly have to do with the layout. It's just not as easily accessible as it could be. I dealt with this by getting reusable sticky page markers and wrote the most important sections down: OB Appointments, Journal area, etc. Another beef I had was that there weren't quite enough slots for the appointments for me. There were periods when I had more frequent visits than usual and I ended up having to write on the reverse side of the previous page. If you have a difficult pregnancy, this may be an issue. Also, they only give you a small square for each week of journaling. I had way more to write than I had space and ended up writing very tiny to squeeze it all in.
Keep a pencil with it with a book/magazine to read in a small tote bag to grab on your way to the OB's. Just don't keep it where small children can get to it...
Good record keeper.......2007-07-07
I used this journal for my first my pregnancy and am using the revised version now. Being high risk, it is great to be able to refer to my first journal weekly to see if I'd experienced the same symptoms the first time around. It's handy to take to dr visits to help remember questions I wanted to ask.The section tabs and the pocket are great additions. I wish there was a tab for each & every section, rather than just 3 general sections-had to add my own. This book is ideal for record keeping and remembering all those little things about the time you spent carrying your baby. I highly recommend it.

worth while reference.......2007-08-25
We use the whole set for references at work. It is terrific and I remind women that they can borrow it from the library. Worthwhile having on your own shelf!
What ever expecting mother should know.......2007-06-30
I used this book with both of my children. I never called the doctor once during the children's first year. When the doctor asked me why I was the only parent that had not had called her with a million questions, I explained that the answers I had sought were in this book. I purchased this copy for a friends daughter. A must read.
A must-have for expectant and new parents.......2007-04-11
This set includes two of the most informative books out there. The chapters are clear and easy to follow and are absolutely full of great information. I can't think of a better book for expectant parents and the first year book is a helpful resource to have on hand, too, to accompany The Baby Book by Dr. Sears, both of which should be in every parent's bookcase.
Love This Book Series.......2006-12-20
I read When You're Expecting during both my pregnancies. I am the proud mother of 2 girls, ages 13 and 2. These books are filled with valuable information and facts. I loved the week by week details on growth and development of both baby and mother during pregnancy in When You're Expecting. My younger sister is now pregnant with her first and I'm buying her this set as her first baby gift! It's a must read!
Good combination of reference books for the pregnant mother!.......2006-07-18
Bought for a friend's first pregnancy! She loved them!

Best Book for Pregnancy.......2007-05-24
I bought this book for a former high school student of mine who found herself young, married, and pregnant this year.
Next to a mother's advice, this is best thing out there. I owned the English version when I was pregnant, and it answered all my questions plus some!
This is a highly useful book in every language!

Book Description
Once upon a time, equipped with a solid marriage, driven careers, and a recently finished basement, my husband and I were ready to start a family. Like many 30-something couples, we thought it would be easy. Unfortunately, after nearly 18 months of doing things "the old fashioned way," my husband was diagnosed with a latent birth defect. It rendered us virtually infertile, not to mention devastated and confused.
The remarkable thing about confusion is that it can spur knowledge and strength. Infertility did just that for us. We moved forward to try to have a child with the help of science and technology. Before we could blink, we were in the midst of monumental efforts to finance our baby-making venture, ordering medications on the Internet, and undergoing multiple, sometimes risky, and invasive, procedures. We endured it all for a single chance to have a child of our own.
Pregnancy Wishes & IVF Dreams: A Story & Lessons About Life, Love, & Infertility is a compelling and insightful look at one couple's struggle with male factor infertility and everything that goes with it. From failed attempts at conception, batteries of fertility tests, and a devastating diagnosis, to IVF/ICSI, other treatments, and ultimately the birth of fraternal twin daughters, Pregnancy Wishes & IVF Dreams offers readers a sense of shared experience through a real-time, personal story. The book also provides first-hand insights, guidance, and quotes covering a range of universal issues including dealing with jealousy, great expectations, doctors, risk, finances, and family. Finally, Pregnancy Wishes comes full circle, leaving readers with twelve, invaluable lessons-learned about life, love, infertility, and numerous questions, and challenges in between.
Like an understanding friend, Pregnancy Wishes & IVF Dreams will leave you feelings less alone, and more empowered as you cope with infertility.
Customer Reviews:
a must read, must buy book.......2007-04-11
Pregancy Wishes and IVF Dreams is an honest and touching account of a couples difficulties with conceiving a child. I have not had to experience infertility directly, but I have a sister and a friend who did. I could also relate to and empathize with Kelley's story as the mother of two children. Kelley Taylor's book is an inspirational story about the challenges that life can present to the reader. It's a must read book for anyone who is facing infertiltity as well as those who have a loved one or friend who is experiencing infertility.

Is our baby eating enough? Is this much crying normal? How do I know when she is really sick? This hefty, 671-page guide to your baby's first year is brought to you by the creators of the bestselling What to Expect When You're Expecting. The three authors, all mothers themselves, are calm, clear, and encouraging as they tackle the first year of child-rearing, month by month. The easy-to-absorb, chronological format includes sections such as "What Your Baby May Be Doing," "What You Can Expect at This Month's Checkups," "Feeding Your Baby This Month," "What You May Be Concerned About," and "What It's Important to Know."
Part Two addresses special concerns such as illness, first aid do's and don'ts, the low-birthweight baby, the adopted baby, becoming a father, and sibling relationships. You'll also find discussions of breastfeeding and bottlefeeding, selecting a physician for the baby, diapers and clothing, safety, and many ways of stimulating the baby's development. The recipes for babies and toddlers in Part Three are useful, as are the recommended home remedies; charts on common childhood illnesses; height and weight; and the thorough index. (A particular strength of the book is the authors' careful attention to diet and nutrition for both mother and baby, incorporating the American Academy of Pediatrics' latest recommendations on infant nutrition.) While some of the authors' perspectives are controversial (such as whether to let your baby "cry it out" or not), this book remains one of the most comprehensive resources for new parents as they toddle through their baby's first year.
Book Description
From the authors of the 9.6-million-copy bestselling What to Expect When You're Expecting, here is What to Expect the First Year (over 5.6 million copies in print), the most comprehensive guide available on the next phase of parenting-newborn care.
Written with the same reassuring, lively authority as What to Expect When You're Expecting, the book is organized for ease of reference, leading nervous parents from month to month, check-up to check-up, even feeding to feeding. The chapters on each month address basic expectations of behavior and growth, as well as special concerns and decisions-from finding the perfect pediatrician to getting baby on a sleep-through-the-night schedule to choosing toys, shoes, and diapers. Equally important are the emotional issues a new baby raises for every member of the family-these are covered thoughtfully and thoroughly.
Additional chapters cover special subjects such as first aid, traveling with a baby, premature babies, adopted babies, and much more. Winner of the 1994 Parenting "Hall of Fame" Award from Child magazine's Child's Best Parenting Book Award. Selection of the Book-of-the-Month Club and Better Homes & Gardens Family Book Service.

MUCH better than the pregnancy version.......2007-10-01
I hated what to expect when you're expecting. I found it totally paranoid and annoying. This book, however, was very useful. I enjoyed the monthly breakdown of developmental skills and issues that might come up. It's in a question/answer format, which is easy to read on only a few hours sleep.
Just what a new parent-to- be needs!.......2007-09-30
What To Expect the First Year, Second Ed
My daughter & son-in-law were delighted to receive this book and find it to be informative, helpful and easy to read.
Very Helpful.......2007-09-27
I felt this book was very helpful as a first time mother. Many things that you'll question can be found in this book, and more.
LOVE this series.......2007-09-20
An absolute must for the intelligent parent. This series is not for the paranoid (it will only make you more obsessed about where your child "ranks" amongst otherchildren. This great easy to read book series (what to expect when you are expecting,... the first year... the toddler years) does just what it says it does. It gave us a guide to lessen the shocks and surprises that my daughter kept in store for us. It also helps me to gauge if any social or developmental abnormalities are occuring so that I can seek help if neccesary. Because of this series (in good part) When my daughter had her first peanut reaction on her 1st birthday I knew what was possible, watched, caught it, and got her medical attention immediately. I now carry a life saving Epi-pen. If you are now paranoid , don't get the books. If you can be rational and want to be aware, then run to get it, love it.
Hand Tool.......2007-09-08
Its a useful book for any new parents. It begins by explaining what essentials to purchase for your new born, breast feeding vs. bottle feeding, post parteum then it goes into depth for the first year fo your baby's development. It will be my guide through the first year of my child's life for sure.

Book Description
Bad things happen to everyone, and this collection provides just the right dose of irreverence to help you laugh at life and all its nasty surprises. Inspired by the author's profoundly pessimistic grandmother, it offers wry, world-weary ruminations on a sampler of life's themes, including: Health ("The only way to keep your health is to eat what you don't want, drink what you don't like, and do what you'd rather not." —Mark Twain); Love ("The surest way to be alone is to get married." —Gloria Steinem); and Money ("I have enough money to last the rest of my life, unless I buy something." —Jackie Mason). Enjoy.

I was not extremely impressed with this text. For the price, I expected more reading. It was a book I could fit into my front pocket. I read it in its entirety in two settings. I thought it would be a little more humorous. I was expecting sarcasm but found it bordering cynanical.
