Book Description

Against a Crimson Sky tells the stories of four characters who are irrevocably linked in the aftermath of Polands violent dissolution in 1794, a break culminating in the doomed 1812 winter march into Russia. Countess Anna Maria Berezowska has finally married her true love, Jan Stelnicki, but life is anything but ideal. Shortly after their union, Jan takes to the battlefield in the hopes of ensuring a sovereign Poland for his children. Meanwhile, his best friend on the front lines continues to pine for Annas cousin, Zofia, but she has her sights set on Emperor Napoleon. Against a Crimson Sky interweaves these tales of intrigue, love, and betrayal as one proud nation and one strong family struggle for unity.

4 out of 5 stars Against a Crimson Sky.......2007-09-30

If you enjoyed "Push not the River", you will undoubtedly also enjoy its sequel. In "Against a Crimson Sky", James Martin delves more deeply into the lives of his characters, always working against the fascinating backdrop of Polish history and culture. He has done a superb job of incorporating what happened in the first book into the second novel. You do not have to have read "Push not the River" (or remember it perfectly) in order to enjoy the sequel. The women characters in particular seem to grow and come alive. And Martin continues to make good use of the wonderful Polish proverbs that he used to introduce each section of his first novel.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent sequel to Push Not the River.......2007-09-24

Against a Crimson Sky continues the saga of Anna and Jan Stelnicki and Anna's enigmatic cousin Zofia, against the background of the Napoleonic Wars. The book is rich in historical detail, from the final partitioning of Poland and the exile of the last Polish king, through the reign of Napoleon and the vital part the Polish army played in his military conquests in hopes that he would regain independence for Poland. Although their faith in Napoleon proved to be unfounded, their bravery and steadfastness cannot be questioned. The actual historical characters, including General Jozef Poniatowski and Napoleon's Polish mistress Maria Walewska, come alive in this exciting, beautifully written novel.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing change from "Push Not the River".......2007-07-09

I had such high hopes after being enthralled with "Push Not the River" that I couldn't wait for this to show up after I ordered it. But I am thoroughly disappointed after reading "Crimson Sky." I'm surprised it's gotten such good reviews. This book drags on and on, mostly without plot, and jumps forward decades at a time. In fact, it reads more like a history lesson on war in Poland and the surrounding countries than an intriguing story of an admirable woman (like Push Not the River), and per the author's note it is NOT based on actual diaries as was the first book: it is the authors "prediction" of what may have happened in Anna's life after the diaries ended.

I actually stopped caring about what happened to the characters about half-way through, and was disgusted with myself because I loved them so much in the first book. I did manage to read the complete novel, but it was an effort toward the end. Unless you are a glutton for historical detail with no immediate need for a plot, save your time - read "Push Not the River" and skip this one. Try "The Tea Rose" by Jennifer Donnelly instead.

5 out of 5 stars A Collegue's Review.......2007-05-15

It was my pleasure to receive a signed copy of Jim Martin's second book as a gift from the author. I had read "Push not the River" several years ago and hoped for a sequel. When I read the first few lines, I was immediately entranced. The writing is beautiful, the characters are clearly drawn and the plot is engaging. I could not put the book down, as Mr. Martin takes us through the years of the French Revolution from the viewpoint of the Polish involvement. One must read the book carefully to find the characters moving "Against a Crimson Sky." I eagerly await the continuation of this series.

5 out of 5 stars Great Historical Fiction.......2007-03-13

"Against a Crimson Sky" left me longing for a trilogy as much as its predecessor "Push Not the River" left me longing for this sequel. This book brings history during the Napoleon era to life. If you like historical fiction such as Leon Uris's "Trinity" or "Exodus" you will love these novels too. "Against a Crimson Sky" is a captivating story with exceptionally well written historical connections. I wish I could see the movie!

The Ace's Dream I've always been lucky, although you wouldn't necessarily know it to look at me. Take now, for instance, 15,000 feet off the ground in the seat of a baby Nieuport, Archie bursting shells all around me, German Pfalz buzzing around like someone stirred up a wasps' nest, machine guns tracing lines of fire through the air. But not a single bullet-hole marring the canvas of my Nieuport, much less me. Like I said, lucky. A Pflaz roars past, guns chattering. I pull back on the stick hard, pulling up my machine's nose and climbing up after him. I roll to the side and come up right behind. The Hun pilot doesn't even see me. With a grin I get him in my sights and hit the trigger on the paired machine guns mounted on the nose of my machine. They yammer out 650 rounds a minute, tracers lighting the way to the Pfalz's tail. I see smoke pour out in a steady stream and the Pfalz starts to go into a dive, the wind fanning the flames spreading across his tail. He! 's finished. I don't bother watching him go down, not when there are so many other tempting targets to deal with. I climb up to 20,000, the ceiling of my little Nieuport, and look down, spotting another Pflaz some 4,000 feet below. I bank to the left and come down in a dive, putting the Hun directly in my sights. Machine guns roar and the tracers announce my attack, but too late. The Pfalz banks one way, then the other, trying to get away, but I stay on him, my rounds ripping through canvas and cracking framework, looking for a vital spot or the pilot himself. I find it when some rounds reach the Pfalz's engine, which starts to smoke and the machine goes into a long, slow dive, trailing smoke like a flag of surrender. Making a close pass, I give the Hun pilot an ironic salute as he starts to drop, almost close enough to imagine he can hear me, even over the roar of the wind and the crackle of the flames starting to spout from his crippled engine. "When you get to ground, tell 'em Nathan Zachary sent you!"

5 out of 5 stars Excellent book based on the popular character.......2007-05-07

This book is the prequel to the computer game and gives a really good back story. It follows how Nathan Zachary got his start and set himself up as a pirate of the air. There were a few mix-ups compared to the game, but the book explains better and makes more sense, if you liked the character, read it. Otherwise the world of this book is amazing on its own.

4 out of 5 stars Great, A must for anyone who loves an exiting read.......2001-01-09

I must say that this is one of the best books I have read in a long time. I own the Crimson Skies computer game and love it also. This story kept me hooked to the book, I couldnt put it down. The only reosen I gave it 4 stars insead of 5 is because in some areas it gets kinda cheesy and there are some noticeable errors throughout the book, other than that it is a simply riveting story and I was sad to finish the last page.

5 out of 5 stars Good background material on a recurring character.......2000-12-20

Nathan Zachary pops up a lot in CS fiction, such as "Wings of Fortune #1: Rogue Flyer" and some of the online short stories at the game's Website, and this brought me up to speed on him. The dogfight scenes were exciting, although some of the World War One dogfight manuevers like the Vrille and Renversement were lost on someone who's used to the more-modern Immellmann, Split-S, High Yo-Yo and Scissors. It requires familiarity with the game to make complete sense, but it's easy to read and quite enjoyable.

      2 out of 5 stars Sadly Disappointing..........2000-04-13

This is my second series by Rosenberg, and I fear it will be my last. The one thing all his books seem to have in common is an upward trend in Rosenberg's use of vulgar language... all of which is unnecessary, offensive, and highly distractive to this reader. And while his use of foul language has steadily increased, Rosenberg's storylines have just as steadily decreased. The plots have thinned dramatically. Very disappointing.

4 out of 5 stars Great read... Good story.... Anxious for more.......1999-08-19

I've read Joel Rosenberg for more years than I care to admit and this book is right on par from what I've come to expect from him. These Hidden Ways stories are great reading, they have an originality to them which I've found in most of Rosenberg's series. The only complaint I had with this book in the series was that the story itself was a little simplistic compared to the previous two. I still enjoy reading about this world and characters and enjoyed this book all the same. I hope for more in this series real soon and would recommend it to all.

3 out of 5 stars Readable, but declining........1999-02-16

I truly enjoyed the first book of this series. The second one had, to me, decent pacing, and an ending that got dropped in at the last minute.

This book has laggardly pacing; major activities happen off-scene and are simply alluded to, or brushed over towards the end.

I'd rather have had more action and less meandering over the scenery, and less introspection on the parts of newer characters. In the first book, it was clear that this was a "buddy flick" -- Thorian Thorsen was the primary character, Ian was a strong secondary character. The second book brought Ian into the spotlight, and sort of shoved Torrie into the "Dumb Blonde Swede" role, which may be fitting for Ian's perspective. Torrie still comes off as being slow witted, if likeable.

This book spends more time with the local cop for Hardwood ND than it does with either of the characters we established earlier in the series, and at the expense of the action in Tir Na Nog. The closure on the book feels terribly contrived, like it was done to either trim the novel down by a few thousand words, or because he ran out of time to write it before his deadline came up.

The fencing scenes in it have the details more or less right, and if there are fewer in there than I'd like, well, it may change later. The overall plot is good, if a bit overpadded. The scenes from Torrie's dad's perspective are lovely. The homily on tolerance for homosexuality, while germane, and important to the author, came off as being heavy handed.

All in all, I'd recommend it if you've read the first two...and I can hope that Mr. Rosenberg has more time on the next one.

5 out of 5 stars Buy it. Read it. Nag him for more........1999-01-18

I'm an unembarrassed Rosenberg junkie, and my only complaint is that it's too long between fixes.

I'm very fond of the Guardians of the Flame books but I think the Keepers of the Hidden Ways books may even be better. I think I have to agree with the previous reviewer that I wanted more of the story, because I do want more of the story, but I think that will be true for the foreseeable future until Rosenberg ends it.

I'm not sure exactly how he's going to get there, but it looks like he's fixing to bring his characters up to and maybe through Ragnarok, and this is a ride that it would be a pity to miss.

Buy it. Read it. Nag him for more.

      4 out of 5 stars Almost Perfect.......1998-12-21

An excellent continuation of the saga. The characters are excellent, real people you want to know. I was sorry the story ended because I wanted to spend more time with these characters. The plot suffers from an ending which seems slapped on to end at a certain number of pages. I hope Mr. Rosenberg can continue these characters with a bit more plot development.

3 out of 5 stars Crimson Skies storyline heads for the chop shop.......2007-07-30

Was interested after seeing that the video game the visual, in depth storyline behind it was heading for novella format. After reading it I was a bit dismayed the way some of the villains were portrayed and I feel there was some loss of detail here that could have been avoided with a little bit of research. If you liked the video game and the characters involved with that you may or may not like this.

The descriptions of the ships and planes and other various craft was not only spot on but extremely elaborate and at least in that standpoint I feel that the writings stayed true to the main course of characters and their lifeline in the sky. Perhaps with enough success we shall see more Crimson Skies novels on the shelf in the future.

4 out of 5 stars A great read, especially when there are only a few with the Crimson Skies subject matter........2007-06-16

This has everything that you could want in a crimson skies novel, and it even goes into more backgrounds of characters like John Kahn...it was a fun read, and nice to hear the story base of after the seccession of numerous states, the United States became a bunch on nations...or something like that.

5 out of 5 stars A land divided... ...and reunited in air fantasy........2005-12-11

What an excelent composition of histories based as an excellent follow up or add on to the Crimson Skies game. Just addictive reading and I'm just thinking about buying the other Crimson books. Again, as in the Halo series, hope to see the movie soon!

      4 out of 5 stars Pretty Good!.......2005-02-16

      Short Review for quick buyers,
I liked this book. I was hoping more on Nathan Zachary (the main charcter of the Video Games) But its got some pretty cool tales on his enimes like Paladin Blake.
This is for the aviator or mystery type reader.
      Check it out!

3 out of 5 stars Fun, but sloppily written.......2004-07-29

'Crimson Skies' is an enjoyable read, and serves to provide some detailed background material to the game. While all three of the stories were well done and had good character development (although the bad guy in the second story should have been a bit nastier), I found the 'technical' side of the stories to be sadly lacking. Granted, 'Crimson Skies' is a fantasy set in an alternate world. But when you start describing helium-filled Zeppelins as having steel frames, extensive armor plating and batteries of five inch guns, you are leaving all resemblance to reality far behind. I guess some might consider this to be poetic license, but to me it just seems like sloppy research. I mean, the U.S. Navy really did develop a series of airships in the 30's that were designed to launch and recover fixed-wing aircraft. In the age of the Internet, it's pretty easy to find the history, plans and specifications of the 'Akron' or the 'Hindenburg'. Why describe Zeppelins that defy the laws of physics when, with a few hours of research, you could describe realistic airships instead? For another example, the final story makes use of the fact that the hero has a 'secret weapon': his mechanic has equipped his plane's engine with a 'nitro boost' system - but it can only be used for short periods of time because 'the pump has to build the nitro pressure back up'. Someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I think that by the 1930's people had figured out how to build pressurized canisters. And even the briefest research into the history of drag racing would show that the time limit on the use of nitrous oxide was based on the fact that the dramatically increased horsepower tended to cause engines to throw rods, pistons and other normally internal engine parts through the side of the block. The problem with nitro wasn't running out of it, but shutting it off before the engine blew up. So why did the author invent an elaborate problem that doesn't exist, when the real problem is both simpler and more dramatic? The stories actually have some very clever ideas in them (like using nitrous oxide in an airplane engine, or building a Zeppelin with a full-length flight deck), but they're spoiled by the authors not bothering to find out how these ideas could actually work.

A little serious research would have paid off in other ways as well. The 1930's was a Golden Age of Aviation, and the chances for an airplane buff to play 'what if" are almost unlimited: What if a helicopter like the Bell 47 was developed in the '30's? What if Howard Hughes had gotten the Spruce Goose to fly? How about some top-secret plans for the fighters and bombers that were really used in WWII? Did the wide spread use of military Zeppelins preclude the development of navel Aircraft Carriers? (this last point was a serious debate in real life). And a little research into how to fly airplanes (or better yet, a few hours of actual flight instruction in a Cessna) would have yielded much more realistic descriptions of the flight scenes. Of course, I'm sure this book was targeted at people who are into video games rather than those who are seriously into classic airplanes. And I didn't expect the publisher to hire a Martin Caidin or a Tom Clancy to write a tie-in book to a video game. But they could have at least given the three authors a copy of Microsoft Flight Simulator and said "Here, play with this for a week and then write the story".

New from FASA--a fiction series based on its most popular board game! CRIMSON SKY FICTION These novels, based on the exciting Microsoft computer game (scheduled for release in the third quarter of 2000) and FASA's popular board game, introduce the world of Crimson Skies. In the 1930s--of an alternative-history America--air militias from fragmented nation-states fight to protect themselves from pirates and other raiders. In this America, the planes are faster, the guns are bigger, and life is more exciting. The first series follows the transformation of Trevor "Rogue" Rheese from law-abiding security agent to pirate with a heart of gold.

5 out of 5 stars Great book, but no follow up books.......2007-05-07

I played the computer game that these novels were partly based off, and I loved the world in which the game and book take place. I read it pretty fast, and although the end of this book has a section from the second, there was never a second book made in the series, this is the only downfall, otherwise the book is great.

5 out of 5 stars Mack Maloney's "Wingman" series in the 1930s.......2000-12-16

Admittedly it requires familiarity with the board game series it's based on to make total sense--especially with all the airplanes mentioned in it--but it's a thoroughly enjoyable tale of dogfighting, greed, and vengeance over the skies of an alternate 1937 Seattle. The setting is evocative of Mack Maloney's "Wingman" series, but more from the point of view of the people who prefer and enjoy the balkanization of the USA rather than the people who want to restore it.

      Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Best of the Series.......2001-08-16

These books of Ms. Samson's just keep getting better and better. I loved this book, it was AWESOME!!... It taes place exactly where Fields of Gold left off, and goes on from there for quite a few years, Elspeth is now grown, and she goes through many trials!! I loved the LOVE between David and Camille!!

      5 out of 5 stars A very good read.......2000-09-24

I really enjoyed this book. This story is about murderer David Youngblood and his new wife Camille, a former professional mistress. The characters are very real and not your typical "perfect" Christian character. They deal with struggles, and a rebellious daughter while trying to solve the mystery of a double murder that David's former prisonmate was sent to Devil's Island for. This book held some suspense and mystery as to who the real murderer is. I find that Lisa Samson does not try to write in a'politically correct Christian' way, which is a nice change. It was nice to see what happened to the rest of characters from the previous two books in the series. Lisa Samson is one of the best Christian authors out there. If you like historical christian novels then this is one to buy.

      Book Description

      Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Air Battles during the Korean War........2005-05-28

First, I commend the author for writing a book about a little explored topic. Many books tell of the land warfare in Korea, but few detail the air battles involving Mig 15s and Sabrejets F-86s. This book attempts to do this, and I think suceeds in showing the violence of the air war. The author breaks his book into chapters detailing the exploits of individuals waging this battle. Unfornatunately, it tries to cover too much in a very short book. One gets a good sense of the first year of the air battles, but nothing of the last two years.
This is a good, though average read. The material covered is unique. I just think the author tried to be too broad in his historical approach and personal stories, and didn't do either very well. An average read about a little written part of the Korean War.

4 out of 5 stars Interesting, Good first hand accounts.......2001-07-29

The first person accounts of the action are riveting. Being new to studying the Korean War the book helped me get a better understanding of the conflict and what our pilots faced. If you like first person accounts, then this would be a good book for you. The only disappointment I had was not enough "big picture" information and I felt that at times the book skipped through the war, just focusing on a few random battles. It left me wanting more, which is both good and bad.

      4 out of 5 stars A good remembrance.......2000-11-29

The author stated that he wrote "Crimson Sky" to remember Korean War aviators as the United States approached the 50th anniversary of the conflict's beginning. Mr. Bruning has done a good job. He has interviewed veterans and put their stories into the book in a fast-paced, you-are-there style. Bruning used episodes from the war to point out important chapters in the history of military aviation. For example, Bruning's first and second chapters are entitled "The First Jet Kills" and "The Birth of Combat SAR," respectively. Particularly worthwhile is the author's penultimate chapter, which deals with Soviet involvement in the Korean air war.

At times, Bruning's episodic approach causes the narrative to seem disjointed. In addition, the author could have said more about the night air war, and some mention might have been made of UN pilots who were not American. Those things are the worst things that can be said about "Crimson Sky," however. The book is well-thought out and well written--well worth four stars.

      3 out of 5 stars Just OK.......2000-09-07

This book is a scholarly and detailed examination of the many aspects of aviation in the Korean conflict. It was interesting and informative, but lacked emotion and any real human energy or excitment. The author appears not to be an aviator and lacks some understanding of the difficulty and complexity of air combat, therfore no real emotional connection is made.

It filled in some knowledge gaps and clarified others (Dambusters navy lore is completely different, so this explaination was worth the price of the book for me).

I would recommend this book for aviation history buffs, but not necessarily for those looking for aviation combat stories with gut churning reality and emotion.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth adding to your personal library. A good read........1999-10-28

If you enjoy reading gritty, in your face, first person accounts of pilots in life and death struggles then this is your book.

As I was reading this book it became clear to me that the author had spent a tremendous amount of time in research and conducted extensive interviews with Korean War pilots and it shows in the detail and depth of his accounts.

I read a great deal of history and it is always refreshing to find a historian who explores new angles and ideas. As a real bonus Bruning makes this an exciting book to read, I laughed at some parts and nearly cried in others.

If you have an interest in the air war over Korea or just in air warfare in general do not hesitate to add this book to your library. I certainly enjoyed this book.
