4 out of 5 stars Maybe The Author Is Correct.......2007-06-27

I almost laughed when the read the parts about the melancholy nature of Swedes but as I'm in the process of reading a Garbo biography, maybe the author's point is correct - blast me if you want and call me un-PC, etc. but maybe it's the Swedish way. It was a joy to read this book and learn some of how they song crafted, and the trials and tribulations they went through in the throes of stardom - the opening chapters on each member were a delight, too, and I'm glad Palm didn't skimp on their formulative era either - I was especially surprised to read about the scorn and negativity ABBA felt from their own country, as if the whole nation had decided collectively that they weren't "cool," taking their cues from the country's music press. A must for ABBA fans or even anyone who has a mild interest in them.

5 out of 5 stars Bright Lights Dark Shadows: The Real Story of Abba.......2007-05-19

It's fun to know the background of all of the members of ABBA, and to find out what happened to them after the group disbanded.

1 out of 5 stars An ABBA Fanatic.......2007-04-01

I very highly recommend this book for those who are interested
not only in the public but private sides of A,B,B, and A. I was especially interested in tracing the paths each member took to
finally arrive at their music we love.
I also learned what a difficult business selling music was and is,
as well as something about Sweden and her people. Very enjoyable
reading.

1 out of 5 stars ABBA story.......2007-01-31

The book is very well written. It is the detail description of somehow mysterious pop group, which is placed just after Elvis and Beatles, as far as the number of sold records is concerned.
You will not find here something completely unexpected. Insteed, you will find a lot of details which are not easly available.
So, for anybody who is a real fan of ABBA - this book is a must !

5 out of 5 stars An Amazing Account of ABBA and Sweden.......2007-01-12

This book is not a quick read, but if you love ABBA it is more than worth the time. Carl Magnus Palm did an amazing job of researching the members of ABBA and in painting a vivid picture of each member as an individual. I also learned a lot about the history of Sweden, the evolution of the music business in Sweden, and about the music business in general. It is amazing how different our imagination of what ABBA's life was like is from the truth. I appreciate the time he took to pull this book together and help me really understand the band. They really went through a lot to bring their music to us, and for that I will be eternally greatful!!

Book Description

Lisa Shilling is 16, smart, attractive--and she is losing her mind. Some days are "light," and everything is normal; during her "dark" days, she hides deep within herself, and nothing can reach her. Her teachers ignore what is happening. Her parents deny it. Lisa's friends are the only ones who are listening--and they walk with her where adults fear to tread. This classic novel of a teenager's descent into madness, in the tradition of Go Ask Alice and I Never Promised You a Rose Garden, has remained a best seller for close to thirty years.

"Compassionate and tragic, an indictment of adults who refuse to get involved."--The New York Times

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Weak Adults.......2007-06-11

Lisa, a high school student, knows something is seriously wrong with her. She is incredibly moody, sometimes happy and cheerful but other times she gets so dark and unhappy that it seems the entire world is against her and there is nowhere she can turn for help. She has tried to talk to her parents, rich people who are very concerned about their public image, but it hasn't been any help at all. Her parents seem to think that she only wants to talk to a psychiatrist because it is what all of the other cool kids are doing. They tell her that she is imagining her problems.

Lisa's friends are concerned, though. Mary Nell and Betsy decide that if Lisa's parents won't help her, then it is up to them to do something. They decide to offer Lisa the counseling she needs, and to give her a place where she can let out her feelings and hopefully help her friends to help her be cured. Lisa agrees to the idea, and asks that another girl, Elizabeth, be included in the therapy. Mary Nell and Betsy don't know Elizabeth very well but because her presence is important to Lisa, they agree.

Together Mary Nell, Betsy and Elizabeth try to help Lisa to navigate the often terrifying world of mental illness as they desperately hope one of the adults in their lives will step in to help them all out.

I liked that the kids in this book stood up for each other and didn't give up when the adults at their school and Lisa's parents refused to help. I also liked that Lisa wasn't miraculously cured. Even though her friends were doing their best, they still weren't able to fix her mental illness by themselves.

I thought that the adults in this book were really weak. I'd hope that in real life there would have been at least one adult who cared enough to step in and try to help Lisa. I didn't like that people didn't pick up on Elizabeth's story. It seemed obvious to me, and I thought Mary Nell should have been able to figure it out and Betsy should have figured it out much earlier than she did.

3 out of 5 stars Dated, but one could abstract the plot lessons to modern times.......2006-09-13

This novella is told from the point of view of teenaged Lisa's quiet, unassuming friend Betsy. Lisa believes she is going crazy with visions, nightmares, and wild mood swings. Her parents diagnose their daughter as a drama queen and no teachers want to get involved, so a trio of Lisa's friends set out to provide talk therapy and ensure that she is never alone.

Reading this today, in 2006, the plot seems rather aimless and dated--we now give Prozac to dogs, watch psychology talk shows, hear about the physciatric health of our celebrities, and send therapists to high schools en masse after traumatic events. The plot can certainly be abtstracted to today's world, because psychological problems continue to go undiagnosed, but many details would have to be changed to make this story relevant to modern teens.

Perhaps modern popular culture has desensitized me as a reader, leading me to label this novel aimless. The events of Lisa's unraveling don't hold much shock value any more, or work as devices to drive the plot of a short novel.

4 out of 5 stars Dated, but still wonderful..........2005-11-09

I read this book several times as a teenager, and recently acquired a new copy at a yard sale. Thought I'd give it another go.

It was copyrighted 1969, which is obvious by the many references to how "groovy" Paul Newman is , but it's a pretty great book. 16 year old Lisa is losing her mind, and her parents refuse to see that, so three friends decide to give her 'therapy' and help her as much as they can. Very moving story.

5 out of 5 stars a realistic look into mental illness.......2005-09-24

I read this book as a pre-teen, as I was beginning to deal with severe juvenile depression. The dark feelings and fear described in the book are real and impossibly unbearable, especially for a child. Some may believe that the material is dated (the terminology is less than PC), however, adults are still reluctant to acknowledge that children/teens experience mental illness. The book helped me to realize that I was neither "crazy" nor alone at a time when my teachers and parents labeled me as shy and typically moody. This book has stayed with me all these years, and I would recommend it to anyone who is dealing with childhood emotional issues or a child with emotional issues. As a current mental health professional, I keep several copies on hand for at-risk children and families.

3 out of 5 stars Possibly outdated.......2005-03-26

This novel was great in its time, when mental illness was a forbidden subject and troubled young people were usually dismissed as stubborn discipline cases.

It didn't teach much about mental illness, as such. It did, however, address a fact that wasn't acknowledged much at the time: children and young adults aren't exempt from mental illness. It could happen to you, it could happen to a friend, and if it does, you're going to have a hard time getting help for it.

Now, in the age of Dr. Phil and Oprah, kids probably have the opposite problem. Parents and teachers often suspect mental illness no matter what a young person does, so it's quite a different world.

The book also addressed the fact that parents don't always do the right thing. For a kid in the 70's, it was still something of a novelty to read about parents and teachers being so aggressively clueless.

So, it's not so much about teenagers being crazy, as it is about the crazy things that people will say and do when they want to avoid dealing with a serious problem. In that sense, I think the book still resonates.

Gems of insight from the life of Charles Spurgeon on confidence, depression, anxiety, loneliness, change, and transition provide encouragement toward emotional wholeness.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a great help.......2005-10-27

Spurgeon is one of the best encouragers and an easy read. He's my favorite!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful, must read book, especially for pastors.......2002-10-26

This book can really help anyone who struggles with depression. I never knew Spurgeon was so wise, but you better believe I'll be reading more of him. Last saturday I got so fired up about this book that I bought every used or new copy on Amazon that netted out under 10$ (I'm on a budget, afterall) to give away to friends.

This book will help you if you struggle personally with depression, and it will help you if you care for people who do.

4 out of 5 stars A very rich, worthwhile read.......2001-10-21

A close friend of mine who has wrestled with depression for some time confided to me how deeply this book had touched his life. Indeed, while every page reflected in some measure the life of my friend, each page also touched on issues common to us all. What a comfort it is to know that so many in the body of Christ have traveled before us, traversed the same valleys, felt the same anxieties, trusted in the same God, and found Him to be absolutely true to His promises. Spurgeon himself, regarded by so many as one of the greatest preachers having lived, speaks with such frankness about his own internal and emotional struggles that he is likely strikes a common chord with all of us. Spurgeon's writing is uncommonly rich and filled with keen observations, anecdotes, and gems of wisdom based on the truth of Scripture. In one such anecdote, Spurgeon comments on the nature of death for the Christian as simply a transition to a more glorious life hereafter: "At Stratford-on-Bow," Spurgeon notes, "in the days of Queen Mary, there was once a stake erected for the burning of two martyrs, one of them a lame man, the other a blind man. Just when the fire was lit, the lame man hurled away his staff, and turning round said to the blind man, 'Courage, brother, this fire will cure us both.'" Although this book is composed almost exclusively of Spurgeon's writings and sermons, it does contain a modest amount of Skoglund's observations as well. In fact it seems that Skoglund has so saturated herself with the writings of Spurgeon that the styles of the two are at times nearly indistinguishable. Perhaps because of the denseness of Spurgeon's writings, this book can be slow going at times. However, as a relative newcomer to Spurgeon, I have the sense that Skoglund has done a wonderful job of piecing together many of Spurgeon's writings on emotional struggle and the encouragement which is to be found in Christ.

4 out of 5 stars Spiritual Tonic.......2000-10-19

This is a wonderful little book. Elizabeth Skoglund has done a fine job of weaving together the writings of Charles Spurgeon on topics dealing with emotional pain and suffering. Each of the chapters are broken up into short segments. The book is best read "devotionally"; a little at a time. It has been a great help to me as a supplement to regular prayer and Scripture reading. Chapters are titled "Confidence", "Depression", "Anxiety", "Loneliness", "Change", and "Transition" (dying). Spurgeon, having suffered from these emotional problems himself, was ahead of his time in recognizing their more common sources and in dispelling some of the easy answers that are still common in evangelical Christian circles today. The first chapter, "Body, Mind and Spirit" offers a good foundation. It recognizes that we are whole persons, not separable into neat compartments. Emotional problems often stem from physical as well as spiritual causes. This book offers strength and courage from a great man who has been through plenty of dark times himself

5 out of 5 stars Going On without Guilt.......2000-05-25

Bright Days, Dark Nights is for anyone 'Going On without Guilt.' It is a great book for daily reading.

Book Description

Julius LeVallon and its sequel, The Bright Messenger, form a union of two novels that deal with elemental spirits, ancient races, reincarnation and the supernatural world of Nature. As Mike Ashley says in his introduction, "these two novels...are the culmination of a lifetime's experience...you will encounter nothing like them anywhere else in the whole of fantastic literature."

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Forgotten masterpieces.......2005-12-24

It's often said that Algernon Blackwood's novels are less successful than his shorter works, but you wouldn't know it from these two rare and (almost) forgotten masterpieces. "Julius LeVallon" and "The Bright Messenger" are both supernatural novels that show Blackwood at his most inspired, visionary, and audacious. Stark House Press is to be thanked profusely for putting these unique works into print once again.

"Julius LeVallon" may well be Blackwood's best novel. It is visionary with a capital "V", presenting (via the title character) a cosmic panorama of reincarnation, karma, civilizations on other planets, nature elementals, magic - plus a little romance. I won't go into the details of the story - it must be read - except to say that it all builds to one of Blackwood's most potent and memorable climaxes.

"The Bright Messenger" is a sequel to "Julius LeVallon" which takes place some 20 years later. It's a little less focussed than the earlier novel and not as powerful, but it is just as visionary, and even more intensely moving. Again, no brief description of the book can possibly do it justice - it simply has to be read. (And if anybody thinks that there's anything "new" about the New Age movement, they should read the hilarious chapters in the middle of the book - written in 1921! - about a group of people known as the "Prometheans"...)

I can do no better than to quote Mike Ashley's fine introduction: "You will encounter nothing like [these two novels] anywhere else in the whole of fantastic literature." Amen to that. Essential reading for any fan of Blackwood, or of supernatural literature in general.

    Book Description

"Count wherever you can" was the motto of Sir Francis Galton's extraordinary life. His measuring mind left its mark all over the scientific landscape. Explorer, inventor, meteorologist, psychologist, anthropologist, and statistician, Galton was one of the great Victorian polymaths. And his obsessive quest for knowledge extended far beyond conventional fields of learning. He turned tea-making into a theoretical science, counted the brush strokes on his portrait, and created a beauty map of the British Isles, ranking its cities on the basis of their feminine allure. But it was in the fledgling field of genetics that he made his most indelible impression. Galton kick-started the enduring nature/nurture debate and took hereditary determinism to its darkest extreme, dreaming of a future society built on a race of pure-breeding supermen.

Through this colorful biography, Martin Brookes examines Galton's scientific legacy and takes us on a fascinating journey to the origins of modern human genetics.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars The book to choose for a general bio of Galton........2006-06-19

An enjoyable introduction to Sir Francis Galton, the brilliant Victorian who gave us weather maps, fingerprints, and (on a less positive note) eugenics. Galton loved to measure things; wherever he was, whatever he was doing, it seems that he found something in his surroundings to measure. His curiosity and enthusiasm for life and discovery make him a sympathetic character even considering his racism, sexism, and classism; he was, after all, a product of his upper-middle-class Victorian environment.

This version of his life story is a good read; choose it instead of Gillham's version unless you want to get into the actual science of what he was doing. One major fault of the Brookes book: it doesn't have an index. Gillham's book has an extensive one.

What would make a Galton biography one step better: more analysis of why Galton became who he was and perhaps a deeper look into his own writings, along with the impact that Galton has on science and psychology today.

3 out of 5 stars Good art, decent story.......2006-08-19

Moebius's art really carries this book. His pen fills The Incal's world with men and monsters, beauties and grotesques, drama and inanity. His palette is brighter and more saturated than in some of his later work, but still eclectic, with skin tones in yellow, green, blue, and fire-engine red. Moebius channels Duillet in at least one scene, the "shadow egg," but that only enhances the visual narrative. The art provides an outstanding vehicle for Jodorowksy's script, which needs all the help it can get.

For example, there's the character Nimbea Super Quinq at the beginning, with her baffling transformation - an utter non sequitur. The Metabaron, a character from another book, puts in an appearance. There's the "psycho-abdomen," which appears to a self-healing water balloon full of ink. The story moves along OK, but but sometimes stumbles under ponderous text.

It's a good comic, but you might look elsewhere for greatness.

5 out of 5 stars when will the graphic novel be in stock.......2002-12-03

Finally, Incal is in graphic novel format! I prefer collection over singles, and besides, #1 & #2 are impossible to get.
I ordered the graphic novel in October because I knew it was coming out early November. However, about a month & 1/2 has gone by & it's still unclear what's going on. This book is already published & out at your local comic book shop. I've been told it's 'backordered' here (along with other graphic novels), but was not told what date they expect it & they have no other information. It's very frustrating.

However, if you are a serious collector, you know how quickly comics go out of print, so just beware if you decide to order...

The art is impecable & strange & will be a nice edition to any collection. I imagine, that with Jodowsky being the author, that
the story line won't be totally linear & may be difficult to get through, but I love the sensibilities of European comix writer/artists, so I'm looking forward to finally getting my hands on it.

my recommendations: anything by Enki Bilal, Neil Gaiman, and Pierre Dubois. If you go to Belgium, there are alot of wonderful
graphic novel/albums you just can't get in the States.

5 out of 5 stars One of the best comic books ever.......2002-09-20

Even when the story was written around 1980, "The Incal" has never ceased to amaze me. Jodorowsky gives us a humoruous, breathtaking iniciatic sci-fi tale and Moebius introduces us into a futuristic world like no other else. Perhaps you've catched a glimpse of this world by watching the movie "The fifth element", in which Jean Giraud (Moebius) participated as a designer. You'll probably feel familiar with many plots and sub-plots as you read, since many artists got their inspiration (or simply copied the ideas right away) from this comic.

I had the luck to see Moebius when he came to my country, and i was able to look at (and, when no one was looking, touch !) some of the original drawings of The Incal. There aren't almost any differences between the originals and the book.

If you want to have a piece of the best of the european comic, a real classic, you'll have to collect the whole Incal series. You won't regret it. And beware ! By reading it, you'll face the risk of learning some things about yourself.

    4 out of 5 stars Recommended.......1999-08-23

Moebius and Jodorowsky make a perfect team. Jodorowsky had a clear vision of what he wanted to say in the Incal, and it keeps the narrative free from the numerous dead-ends and noodling story line that marred Moebius' visually brillant and highly imaginative but ultimately unsatisfying Airtight Garage.

3 out of 5 stars Pretty Fair Sci-Fi Adventure: Some Cleverness, Some Cliches.......1999-07-01

This is a collection of the first part of the wierd sci-fi adventures of John DiFool, first published as a serial in 'Heavy Metal' magazine.

John is an investigator living in 'The Great Buried City', a stratified monarchy headed by the corrupt 'President' Major Orphidite. In a bizarre encounter DiFool is given a living gem, the Incal, source of unimaginable power. His possession of this mysterious object pits him against the hunchbacks of Orphidite, the assassins of the criminal Queen of the lower regions, and the boffins of Technocity, who worship the Black Incal.

Not terrible, for a plot, and a lot of the setting and characters are cleverly conceived; but I could have done without cornball characters like Deepo and the cyber-baron. The absurd ending is unsatisfying and Jodorowsky is just not clever enough to pull off the kind of insane camp Moebius developed on his own in 'The Airtight Garage of Jerry Cornelius'. Nor does the story have the crisp cohesion and ironic twists of Arzach.

    Book Description

Ten years have passed since the end of Confidence Game. In Biora, Tod has found himself repairing the old books left by scholars three centuries ago. These books are valued in Dabion, but in Biora itself they are little more than curiosities, and most of its people cannot even read the books that are so prized outside its borders. Biora has become a land of unending violence, where men are destined to be warriors. Julian, a peaceful young man who has befriended Tod in Biora and learned to read from him, is not at home in his homeland. When traders come to Biora for books to sell in Dabion, they take Julian with them, another curiosity for the Justices.

Aron Jannes is the son of Lord Justice Jannes, a leader in the government of Dabion. Aron is angry at his father's negligence; he is angry at his mother's death ten years ago; he is angry at Elzith for her abandonment of him. It is no comfort to him to discover that his father employs spies. Not all the spies work only for Jannes, though. Justice Rayner, now at the head of Dabion's secret forces, has been following Jannes for more than ten years, and is intent on cornering him at last.

In Dabion, Julian encounters misunderstanding and conflict, a foreigner in a land that accepts only the image of Biorans gathered from their ancient books. Julian is drawn toward Aron, recognizing Aron as another seeker without a home, although Aron is too enthralled by his own anger to return Julian's friendship. One fateful day, Aron rescues Julian from danger almost by accident, and the two young men are thrown together by circumstance. As they become drawn up in Rayner's plots and the political turmoil that sets Dabion at the edge of civil war, Julian and Aron must discover where their loyalties lie and which paths they will walk.

2 out of 5 stars Unable to finish.......2005-03-21

Rarely do I have to set a book aside without finishing it, but that was the case here. Too many characters to keep track of, too many plots begun and then left as we turn to another character and subplot, and slow, ponderous writing throughout. The book had some original ideas, but a quarter of the way in I still didn't understand what was going on or what the subplots had to do with each other, so I gave up. An entertaining book should hit the ground running. This one didn't.

4 out of 5 stars Message from the author.......2004-10-06

Amazon no longer has a link where authors can post comments, so I have to do it this way. This puts me in the odd position of having to rate my own book; I just gave it a rating that would maintain the current average.

In response to the reviewer who felt she was being set up for a sequel -- in a way, she was. THE BRIGHT AND THE DARK functions as a bridge between CONFIDENCE GAME and the third title in the series, CHASING FIRE, which is scheduled for publication in fall 2005. Unfortunately, due to the delay in finalizing the sale of CHASING FIRE, there is no annoucement or preview material in the back of THE BRIGHT AND THE DARK. However, details are available on my website: www.sff.net/people/mmwelch. Thanks for reading -- mmw

4 out of 5 stars Could have used a few more pages.......2004-09-22

I picked up this novel free at the World Science Fiction convention this year and was quickly entranced by the rich and diverse world Welch created. I eargerly devoured the pages but as I neared the end I worried - "There isn't enough room in the book to resolve all the plot!" I fretted. I thought we were being set up for a sequel. That would have been preferable to the rushed conclusion where too many plots resolved with too little detail.

This author shows a lot of potential with a good imagination and excellent narrative skills. I think perhaps what she needs is a good editor - or another 50 pages.

5 out of 5 stars The Power That Is In The Hands Of The Few.......2006-11-11

The political writings of Gore Vidal are timeless.

Originally published in 1950, the novel is set in a mythical South American country that has resources to plunder and a multi-national corporation willing to do the bidding for U.S. government interests. In the mix is the deposed president - who firmly believes that his powerful "friends" will help him and his son regain power - and a former U.S. Army officer with tacit knowledge that a handshake from some is actually a death sentence.

The former president is playing a game that he feels he has the cards to win. It is much too late when he realizes that he was just another puppet on a string who will be remembered as only a footnote in the history of his nation.

Set the scene in another location, tweak the characters a bit and the reader is drawn into yet another conflict that benefits the few, while leaving a bloody trail under the guise of fighting for freedom and democracy.

3 out of 5 stars Unbelievable when written, commonplace now.......2000-05-29

Dark Green, Bright Red by Gore Vidal was his second novel, written when he was in his early twenties. This story of a planned revolution in a mythical South American country was probably unbelievable in its day, dealing as it did does with the involvement of the U.S. governemnt, the United Fruit Company (under another name) and an up front assumption that Uncle Sam calls the shots in Central and South America. Unfortunately Vidal does not go all the way with this story. The 'hero', a former American Army officer who has left the service under a cloud of suspicion, 'retires' to the mythical country that is the setting for the story, because his good friend from WWII is the former President's son. Soon he is caught up in a plot to bring the former president to power once more, and also involved in an affair with the former president's daughter. Obviously no good can come of this, and of course it doesn't. The conclusion is to be expected and the main character leaves the story having experienced much but seemingly having learned little. There is a lot of interest here, especially the clear view that Vidal has of the role played in Latin American relations by entities such as the United Fruit Company and the willingness of the U.S. Government to go to great lenghts to support them. It would be decades before the public at large would recognize this as true. For this alone the book is worth reading.
