Book Description

Complete Champion focuses on the divine champion and provides new rules options for characters who enjoy battling for a cause, defeating foes with divine magic, and going on quests that mean more than simply defeating the bad guy and grabbing the treasure. Complete Champion also helps Dungeon Masters run quest-themed campaigns and adventures.

In addition to providing various archetypes for characters, Complete Champion includes new feats and prestige classes. This book features dozens of deity- and belief-themed organizations, turning religion and holy (or unholy) power into something characters of all classes can use.

Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars Good for "core pantheon" campaigns.......2007-09-16

All in all this isn't a bad book, it just lacks a certain level of applicability to any campaign not using the "core" deities as detailed in the PHB. More or less all of the fluff and a good deal of the crunch in this book seems to take that as a given. All in all I have been impressed with the Completes series - I was dubious of the "second round" but after Mage and Scoundrel I was generally impressed. This one seemed a far cry in utility compared to the others in the series. It has a handful of useful rules items, but all in all this isn't a great book.

4 out of 5 stars Quite Useful For 3.0/3.5e Greyhawk Campaigns..........2007-09-13

Complete Champion works best if you're campaign is set in Greyhawk and/or prominently features the core 3.0/3.5e D&D gods. It's also the most DM-centered of the "Complete" books, which are generally thought of as extensions of the Player's Handbook (PHB). While there are new feats, prestige classes (11 of them, actually) and spells, the rules for creating church affiliations and holy sites take up quite a bit of the book. While players might join one of these organizations, it's the DM who'll get the most out of this information.

Affiliations were introduced in the Player's Handbook II (PHBII) as a way of providing rules and benefits for characters belonging to various organizations. You don't need the PHBII, however, as rules for building your own church affiliations are provided in the Complete Champion. Affiliations are useful because they provide criterion for characters to rise up in the ranks of a given organization (in this case, a church) and provide increasingly valuable benefits for doing so. While all the churches presented in the book are of non-evil Core/Greyhawk deities, there are brief descriptions for the evil Core/Greyhawk deities, as well. Furthermore, rules are given to allow you to create a church affiliation for nearly any deity you choose based on their prominent domains.

Among the usual selection of feats are a new type called Domain Feats. These feats, which can be taken by any character, are each based on one of the core domains from the PHB such as Air, Destruction and Travel. These Domain Feats provides an ability, often only usable once per day, based on the powers associated with the specific domain. This provides a fun, if not always balanced, way to provide non-divine classes with the blessing of a deity, which I like, but there's certainly nothing to keep a divine class from taking these feats as well.

Many of the prestige classes are based on the Core/Greyhawk deities, as well. Pelor has the Shadowstriker and the Shadowspy which are both tied to a Pelorian church affiliation called Pelor's Shadow Guard. While this might sound counterintuitive for a sun god, the description of the affiliation does a great job at explaining how these prestige classes came to be. There's also a prestige class for Hextor (Ordained Champion) and another (The Sancctified One) which can be taken by Ehlonna, Kord, Olidammara or Wee Jas, providing differing abilities for each.

The new spells favor the cleric, but there's quite a few new things for paladins, druids and blackguards as well. There's even a few new spells for Adepts (the NPC class), which is something I haven't seen in a while. On average, the spells are 2nd-4th level spells, but clerics receive a few 5th-7th level spells, too.

Of the new items presented I particularly enjoyed the special holy symbols. These are masterwork holy symbols that each have special powers relating to the Core/Greyhawk deity they represent. There's quite a bit of variety here and these items are relatively inexpensive having more value in terms of status than monetary worth.

The final chapter covers divine quests and holy sites. Again, this is probably more befitting a DM than a player. While players who worship a certain deity will certainly want to visit the holy site and gain the favor of their gods, this material is better served in the DMs hands. Still, these can add a fun touch to any Greyhawk campaign.

Overall, I think this is a great book and I intend on using the church affiliation rules to build my own churches and expand those of the other deities in my Greyhawk campaign. If you're running a 3.0/3.5e Greyhawk campaign or favor the Core deities, this book can definitely help mesh the rules and rewards of belonging to a church to the concepts and flavor of serving a deity. If you don't have any use for the Core/Greyhawk gods, then this book will be of significantly less value to you and I suspect that may be why it's received such low ratings overall. I'm sure I'd like it a lot less if it featured Forgotten Realms or Eberron deities, for example.

So, if you like the Core/Greyhawk deities and want to find ways to make them more interesting to their followers, pick up Complete Champion right away. Otherwise, you'll probably be disappointed. But me? I think it's quite good.

3 out of 5 stars It's not too bad, but not as good as most........2007-08-23

I was a little disappointed that this book wasn't more like the Complete Scoundrel. I thought it would be the Scoundrel's complete opposite, much like the Book of Vile Darkness and the Book of Exalted Deeds.

3 out of 5 stars It is ok.......2007-07-19

While I really enjoy the concept of the domain devotion feats, there just did not seem to be very much to this book. They have interesting variants, but I wish they had more prestige classes in it.

4 out of 5 stars Shadowstrikers!.......2007-06-30

I quite like Complete Champion, which offers more depth on the major D&D religions, some cool feats and alternative class features, spells, and magic items. I didn't think too much of the prestige classes, but I rarely find prestige classes very compelling. Then again, I thought the "Shadowstrikers" have a very cool flavor: sort of a military alliance between the churches of Pelor and Heironious out to save the world. The Summon Holy Symbol and Metal Fang were a couple of handy spells that, upon reflection, should've come out years ago. The new feats include Domain Feats, each one associated with a particular domain that the cleric has to have to take it. The new reserve feat associated with healing (Touch of Healing) could revolutionize how some parties approach healing between battles: so long as you keep a 2nd level or higher cure spell in reserve, you can slowly heal your buddies up to half their total hp without casting a spell or expending a charge off a wand. (The feat is particularly useful for druids and bards.) The Holy Warrior feat is a personal favorite (constant boost to damage, but you need access to the War domain). An earlier review suggested that the book is only helpful for paladins: I couldn't disagree more. There is a divine-style alternative class feature for every class: the ones for ranger I thought were cool, and there are options for fighter and monk that enable them to align their weapons/unarmed attacks without needing a cleric to cast Align Weapon. Most of the magic items work for anybody, although some are only for druids, clerics, or paladins. The rules for joining church organizations, whether or not you're a cleric or paladin, have some neat little benefits: I thought the 1st rank benefits for followers of Moradin (+5 movement for only 500 gp and some easy criteria) is a good example of something any dwarf would appreciate. All in all, I really liked it.

2 out of 5 stars A big let down.......2007-08-08

I really enjoyed the first series "Witches" so I thought this series would be just as good. I really liked the first two books of Rhiannon's Ride and I felt the story was building nicely. But, the last book really let me down. I finished the book thinking "what?! It is over!" I felt I was left with many questions and feeling like there should have been more. I thought there were many points in which Forsyth could have taken the main battles further with Brann and the ending battle. But they were over before you could know it. I had to read it over again to make sure I knew exactly what happened because I couldn't believe Forsyth would end the battle so quickly. I love Forsyth's writing and the detail of each character, but I felt this book was a huge let down.

4 out of 5 stars A tapestry of adventure.......2007-06-19

Kate Forsyth has done it again. She has deftly interwoven her characters, world, and the history of that world to create a beautiful tale of love, pain, adventure, and heartache.

In THE HEART OF STARS, half-satyicorn girl Rhiannon, Keybearer Isabeau, and Banrìgh Bronwen all struggle in their own way to save Eileanan from the treasonous plots hatched by a gang of villains.

This book is absolutely gripping, exciting, and powerful. There are some scenes here that will leave readers in awe at what the characters manage to do. Forsyth doesn't waste time with perfect happiness - Eileanan is a true-to-life reality that is so detailed, so well-crafted, you will have a tough time pulling away. And tragedy happens.

One of the major questions here is on resurrection: Can it be done? And if it can, SHOULD it be? Characters in Eileanan take it as a fact that No, it should not. I didn't find, however, that there was a good enough reason not to bring people back to life. There needed to be more stress on the order of life, and the consequences of such an act, to convince us why not.

Another gripe: what's with the order of the book, and the synopsis at the beginning? For a hundred pages you get Isabeau, then for another sixty you get Rhiannon, and so on. In the past, Forsyth has always kept us hanging, a much better tactic when one wants to stress the intertwining of time and life while also making things more exciting.

But despite that, there are so many things going on - so many subplots and motivations and intrigues to grasp - that it all feels like one giant reality. Unfailingly, everything ties together, and nothing is left undone. It's lovely and complex, just like those tapestries of life Forsyth writes of in her books.

Pretend this is 4 and 1/2 stars, and after you've read all the other books in the series, go out and get this one. It's worth it, because aside from a few minor pitfalls, Forsyth weaves a beautiful tapestry of intriguing, honest-to-earth human (and half-human) beings. Their motivations, their thoughts, all ring true for some reason or another. That alone makes it worth the read.

1 out of 5 stars Dissapointing.......2007-05-08

I also bought this book in Australia; my dad was there for a business trip last August. I was eager to get my hands on the last book of this trilogy. I was severly disappointed in this book though, so much that I'm not sure I'll ever read this trilogy again. I know that this took place sixteen or so years after we left off with the "Witches" saga, but a lot of the characters have changed beyond recognition. Characters should change over time, but I think too many changed beyond recognition, and there were no real events to explain this change. There were also plot holes and mistakes on the writers part... at one point she called Elfrida the "NicBerthe" or the "NicFealde" I don't remember which and I don't have my copy near me to check. Also a big disappointment was both the battle with the NicFoghan and the battle with Brann. You would have expected them to be quite large and monumentous, seeing as they are the events that the first two books were leading up too. Both however, were over in the blink of an eye. Brann's battle didn't even last a whole chapter. This last book fizzled away and left me with too many questions, and too upset at how the characters acted, with no real explanation for the sudden changes. You would think this was written by a fanfiction author, rather than by the author herself.

5 out of 5 stars Great book! .......2007-05-03

Less than a year ago, I absently picked up "Tower of Ravens" because the horse on the cover intrigued me - I find it hard to resist the horse-crazy adolescent girl still lurking in the corners of my mind. I was excited to see that a sequel was already out, so I bought both of them at the same time and spent the evening devouring them.

I eagerly awaited the US release of Heart of Stars and the only complaint I have is that there isn't going to be more to the story! The way Kate Forsyth weaves the different and interconnected plots and characters together is truly enjoyable - sometimes when I read a book too fast, I'll get lost between the characters and plots and settings, but not so with this one.

I am a little disappointed that Rhiannon's Ride is being touted as a trilogy - there are so many unanswered questions at the end of Heart of Stars, questions that would be too tedious to stick onto the end of the novel, but would be well-answered as background details in yet another sequel.

The reviewer before me has already pretty much summed of the gist of the story, I just wanted to add my approval of this book as well. I find myself thinking in the "accent" that the characters speak in, which means that it was truly immersing - and I dinna ken how to stop!

2 out of 5 stars so disapointing.......2007-05-02

I am not sure what the previous reviewers saw in this novel, but it was so disapointing. The first books were so good that I made my father buy me the Austrailian edition of the third book when he was there on business (it came out earlier in Australia). I read it immediatly but was very unhappy with the book. Rhiannon was barely in the story and Kate Forsyth had so many different plots going that the book felt disjointed and a bit tedious. Normally I am very easy to please, but I had such high hopes for this novel. It didn't even come close to what I was expecting based on the previous 2. Also, what was with what happened to Olywene? That seemed forced and unnatural. I am sorry, but stick to the first two novels.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars A fantasic sequal.......2007-08-09

The Shining City is a wonderful continuance of The Witches of Eileanan. This gives Forsyth's wonderfully complex characters in her first series some relief to grow up in relative peace. This second book of the new trilogy is based in the next generation of Witches, some fifteen years after the end of The Witches of Eileanan saga. This Trilogy stands alone; however, I seriously recommend reading The Witches of Eileanan series first. This sequel is full of angst while Rhiannon waits to be tried for treason and murder.

5 out of 5 stars It doesn't get much better than this.......2007-06-15

If you've read the first novel in this series and are uncertain about getting the second one, trust me on this: GET IT. You will love it. And if you've never read any of Kate Forsyth's work before, get it too - it's a great introduction to her richly imagined world of witches, faeries, and lords.

Rhiannon is a half-satyricorn who unwittingly gets herself caught up in the affairs of the country of Eileanan when she flees her tribe. Found to possess strong magic, Lewen, a young man who finds her hurt in the forest on a winged horse, urges her to cultivate her powers at the Tower of Two Moons. But first she must face charges of murder and treason: Rhiannon has killed a Yeomen of the guard.

We get to really delve into all the characters in THE SHINING CITY. From Lachlan, the ruling Rìgh of Eileanan, to seemingly flighty Bronwen, engaged to the heir, every single character is driven by their own beliefs, ambitions, and wants. The best part of it all is that it's all completely believable, and when I say "completely," I mean it. Forsyth is gifted with the ability to really get to the heart of every single driving force in her characters.

The constant change in perspective Forsyth provides us with gives us a better look at the bigger picture, and it really works to illustrate the scope and depth she has imbued her world with. Some authors might stumble here, but she does it with grace and careful attention to detail.

Speaking of detail, the characters all speak in dialect, something that becomes a fun sort of "secret language" that only Forsyth readers know.

This is that rare sequel that is better than its counterpart. While THE TOWER OF RAVENS was wonderful in and of itself, I find that it worked much better as a set-up to all the events in this second book. THE SHINING CITY is jam-packed with adventure, intrigue, romance, drama, and a rich, well-imagined history and fantasy world. This is a book to enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful new series..............2007-03-07

After taking a full year to devour the six books in Kate's Eileanan Series and enjoying them, I have enjoyed in a way, a new three book series sequel. Devoured The Tower of Ravens the first book in two days and read this book in one day. Can't wait for the third and final book in this series. Won't go into a full over 500pgs. review but will say what goes around for Llachen and Iseult. They took the throne from Maya and evantually would have taken Bronwan. Her daughter away, except that Bronwan was destined to marry Donn their first son. Rhiannon is in jail for murder and Lewen is being bespelled by Olwynn, Donn's sister. Now Bronwan is back on the throne, Llachen has been murdered, Iseult's three children kidnapped, and everything is in an uproar. At the end Rhiannon is pardoned, and promises to rescue everyone that was kidnapped. The third book called will be excellent. I can't rave enough about this series just to say that I enjoyed it and highly recommend it. It is good, though not necessary to read the earlier series, but Kate covers it so well that you will understand the situation. Read this series, and if your unsure about the words she includes a glossery at the end of the book so you can understand many of her difficult Celtic words.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps the story moving.......2007-01-18

This book is wonderful and the series depicts the children of the main characters from the first 6 novels. I was very happy to see Iseult thrown down and Maya have a small victory. Bronwen deserved to be treated as the heir, not her cousin. I have always disliked Lachlan and Iseult and it was great to read that they finally fell. Lachlan has always been stupid and selfish and did not deserve to be king. The keybearer has always been a good person and I hope that she continues to be a strong female character.

5 out of 5 stars So Stressful, Yet SO Great!.......2006-08-09

This book was even more gripping than the first. It made me angry, distressed, sad, relieved, excited, and more. I fell in love with the characters even further. I was glad to see some of the original relationships from the original series still existing. Although an angsty plot, I adored this book and am chomping at the bit for the release of the final book. I need to know the consequences and the outcomes! Can't wait. Kate Forsyth has become my favorite author, hands down!

5 out of 5 stars Awesome series.......2007-10-03

For those familiar with the author's works, The Tower of Ravens, and the rest of "Rhiannon's Ride", is set in Eillean, and takes place about 20 years after the sixth installment of the Witches of Eillean series. I would recommend that if you haven't read the series, but intend to, I would read it before starting The Tower of Ravens, due to the fact that there would be some spoilers in this series about the Witches series. This book/series, is about a half human half satyricorn girl who escapes her mother, who is the matriarch of her herd. She has some amazing adventures, and somehow comes through it all. Only things I could have wished to be different in this series, is maybe a little less sexual tension between Rhiannon and Lewen early on in the series, and maybe having the afterward being about 3-5 years out, instead of 3 weeks out. Overall, a very pleasureable reading experience. Couldn't put the books down. A must read for people who have read the previous series, and also, for those who would like to get to know the authors works better.

Very rarely does a fantasy novel manage to take you into its world from the first page and refuse to let you go until the ending. More often than not, stories in a series get you hooked into its magical world, then leave you hanging as you breathlessly await the next installment. Not so with Kate Forsyth's THE TOWER OF THE RAVENS. For those who have never visited her world of Eileanan in books such as The Pool of Two Moons: Witches of Eileanen Book 2 (Witches of Eileanan) or The Cursed Towers (Witches of Eileanan, Book 3), never fear! THE TOWER OF THE RAVENS is a fantasy epic that can definitely stand alone, and does so with competent writing, fantastic world-building, and a deeply heroic cast of characters.

Ever since she was a young girl, Rhiannon has wanted nothing more than to catch a winged horse, to tame and train it so that she could fly away and escape from the hellish nightmare that is her life. Scorned, ridiculed, and even feared by her fellow man, Rhiannon lives in near solitude, wanting only to belong. Without even a name at this young age, the daughter of One-Horn and a human father. One-Horn is the mother of the tribe of satyricon, fairies who have horns and hoofs instead of feet. Rhiannon, born without a horn and with human feet, is immediately branded an outcast, and she lives her solitary life with only the hope of escape as comfort.

When she finally manages to escape upon a winged horse, its not without injury and risk to herself. Arriving at the home of Lewen, an apprentice witch, she's finally given a name-and perhaps a chance to truly belong. When Lewen and his family decide to bring Rhiannon to the Tower of Two Moons in the city of Lucescere to be tested for magical ability, Rhiannon worries that she might once again lose any sense of self she's just beginning to gain.

Murder, intrigue, and suspicion soon surround Rhiannon when a member of the Guard is found dead. Suddenly surrounded by unimaginable evil and malevolence, it will take all the strength and magic that Rhiannon possesses to protect herself and those she loves.

THE TOWER OF RAVENS is a wonderful fantasy novel that will thoroughly immerse you in Kate Forsyth's magical world. A woman who wants only to find her place in the world, Rhiannon is a strong, caring woman who truly overcomes her past to be a woman that everyone can be proud of.

5 out of 5 stars Tower of Ravens - Rhiannon's Ride Book 1.......2007-02-02

Bloody AWESOME!!! Highly recommended. So good that I have read all the books in this series. Also I have started the other books in the series before Rhiannon's ride. These ones tell the tales of the older characters in Rhiannon's ride. It doesn't really matter if you decided to read this series after the Tower of Ravens, but I think it would make things even more exciting!

None the less one of the best novels/series I have ever read.

1 out of 5 stars Craptacular.......2006-06-02

This book would have been a thousand times better if Ms. Forsyth had not gone so heavy on the Scottish accent her characters use. I realize that this book is set in a Scottish setting, but it's no use reading a book when you have to read and re-read a conversation three times so you can translate what they are actually saying. I can usually get used to a written dialect (Hagrid in Harry Potter, everyone in Their Eyes Were Watching God), not so with this book.

Also, the plot goes nowhere for 3/4 of the book. I'm sure there was a climax in there somewhere, but I never found it. The ending was a cliffhanger. It was a fittingly crappy ending for a crappy book. Don't waste your money on this book or the sequel. I would not recommend this book unless you enjoy wasting a few hours of your life.

I have read all of The Roselynde Chronicles, and Rhiannon lives up to all the other books. Ms Gellis weaves a wonderful story of a family, supplies history, romance etc etc. She is very detailed with her describitions, it is like watching a movie.

3 out of 5 stars Good, But Not Great.......2000-01-05

I have read the full six volumes of the Roselynde Chronicles, and I found that although Rhiannon as a character was sympathetically written, I couldn't connect. The male family members (aside from Simon, from Book I and Ian, from Book II) were sort of afterthoughts. I had a hard time with some of the plotting between Rhiannon and Simon, as well as Rhiannon's relationship with her father. Admittedly, I don't understand enough about the clan history of ancient Wales, but still, some of it was a bit far-fetched,

Book Description

Rhiannon, with her dancing blue eyes and mischievous nature, would rather roll in pigswill than marry a suitor not of her choosing. She bolts from her determined father when she discovers that once again he has arranged for her to marry, this time to the infamous ‘dark count’, Earl Stanwyck. Her informant, however, heard incorrectly, leaving Rhiannon unaware that her true betrothed is the darkly handsome viscount Jarreth Stanwyck, young nephew of the earl and heir to his entire fortune.

Jarreth, also not thrilled with his uncle’s arrangement, is leisurely on his way to decline her when a chance meeting at a lake brings the two together. They hide their identities from each other, she posing as a simple peasant, and he pretending to be a lowly knight on a mysterious mission. He instantly falls in love with her playful and independent spirit, as well as her hilarious stories of her past shenanigans.

After learning her true identity, he continues his ruse in an attempt to win her heart, only to learn that the best-laid plans can overwhelmingly backfire.

I guess this book is OK, but the personalities of the main characters irritated me, especially the girl.

5 out of 5 stars Laugh, cry, take your pick.......2006-02-27

This book had me on a roller coaster ride. In one minute I was laughing so hard I had to put the book down (Rhiannon is quite a character) and the next I was bawling like a baby. Rhiannon is a mischievous child of a Lord who only wants to get her married to someone rich and powerful. However, she has other ideas. When someone finally does come along, he turns out to be the nephew of the horrible Dark Count, her father's latest marriage prospect. I won't say any more, bu you have to read this book. I love Ms. Stratton's books, and have read all of them. I am now on to Vain Wish, which from what I understand is completely different from her other books.

5 out of 5 stars Adventure & Romance.......2005-09-02

This book has adventure in it, and a lot of romance. There is one scene in the book however,(somewhat graphic but nothing compared to the trashy crap in an actual romance book) that kids shouldn't read, but it would be a good read for teens and adults. Somewhat predictable, but a cute story all the same filled with irony. It's a good book and you'll get hooked reading it because of the ironic humor in it, so if your into romance without too many cheap you know what kind of scenes, then you should consider reading this book. Well worth the buy.

4 out of 5 stars A charming, lovely book.......2004-12-09

I would like to start this review by saying how much I love all of the stories this author writes, including this one. She obviously has a good heart, a keen wit and a delightful sense of humour. (Actually, she's funnier than most comedians.) Moreover, she is a spellbinding storyteller who can hold a reader's attention to the point where they would prefer to miss sleep or appointments rather than stop reading and put the book down.

That said, I must also say, I do wish this writer would get an editor, or a proof-reader, or a writing coach, or something, because her books are simply awash with spelling and grammar mistakes, to the point where I actually found myself rewriting some of her sentences in my head whilst I was reading! I almost wanted to pick up a red pen to correct all the mistakes, and I'm not even a teacher!

I also found fault with the language used in this book's dialogue, which sounded so American I could practically hear the accent. The book is set in England in 1483, and whilst I do not wish for complete authenticity in the characters' speech (I realise that the way they talked back then was not how we would talk today, and would not make for easy reading) I would have at least expected it to sound just a tad bit English, rather than ye olde Californian. Sorry, but throwing in the occasional "'twas" or "aye" does NOT make it English.

However, if you put aside those criticisms, this really is a very lovely, enjoyable book, with delightful, lovable characters. If you decide to read it, you won't be sorry. Oh, and while you're at it, do yourself a favour and check out Evangelynn Stratton's 'Lady Knight' as well, since it's an excellent read too.

5 out of 5 stars HEX is a book that you are cursed to enjoy........2004-07-29

The most dangerous person in the 24th century is a 15-year-old girl named Raven --- and officially she doesn't even exist. Why? Raven is a Hex --- part human, part super computer. In the late 21st century, Hexes were created by genetically enhancing human children. Hexes can reach into the Net and access information systems from around the world. They can move around the World Wide Web the way other teenagers stroll around a mall. Raven has awesome powers --- she can control computers with her thoughts. Raven is in hiding, though, and she would like to keep it that way. If the secret government finds out that she is alive, she will be killed.

Children with the Hex gene must either fight for their lives, hide away, or be exterminated. The government doesn't want its people to know that Hexes exist. The CPS, a secret government agency, is on a mission to seek and destroy all Hexes. Most die no matter what they do. Raven's sister, Rachel, is already presumed dead, even though she had never shown any sign of being a Hex. While searching the Internet for some sign of Rachel's existence, Raven runs across another fate that Hexes face. A fate worse than death. It is this discovery that will eventually lead Raven, along with her foxy non-Hex brother Wraith, to the place where Hexes die.

HEX is book one of what promises to be an outstanding series by Rhiannon Lassiter. Lassiter does a great job of making the people in her books as real as possible. Even the minor characters have great personalities.

There is a reference to a New York disaster and some talk about terrorism, which takes some of the fun out of this book. This is minor, though, and doesn't take away from the fact that HEX is a book that you are cursed to enjoy.

    5 out of 5 stars A TOTALLY AWESOME BOOK!!!.......2003-10-21

Hex is an amazing sci-fi trilogy that will keep you enthralled from the very first page. In the late 21st century, scientists created the Hex gene to improve human knowledge of computers. The project was later abandoned, but mutants with the gene, known as Hexes, continued to be sought out and exterminated.
Years later, Raven, a Hex and possibly the most dangerous teenager in the world, along with her brother, Wraith, travel to London in search of their younger sister, Rachel. There they meet Kez, a streetrat, and Ali, a popular and rich girl who has just discovered that she is a Hex. Soon the group becomes engaged in a dangerous mission that could cost them their lives.
Containing interesting characters with distinct personalities, excellent descriptions, and an imaginative portrayal of the future, Hex is one of the best science fiction books you'll come by and the fitting start to a great series.

4 out of 5 stars Four out of five isn't bad.......2003-05-26

I read all three books in the trilogy over a year ago and have recently come to pick them up again. The best feature of the book is the idea, I love reading sci-fi books that don't actually feel sci-fi - the books that I enjoy explaining the plot to friends and family. The reason I didn't give the book five stars was because there wasn't enough romance, and there is always room for romance - where are we without it? Also I would have loved to have more information about the way of life that far ahead into the future, on a more day to day level. The last reason is because i didn't like Raven, although i know why she was cold and heartless I think hope goes a long way but i never felt she would change - it is definitely a first for me to love a book and not love the main character. Despite this the book left me wanting to find out more so it definitely earned four stars.

    5 out of 5 stars Hackers.......2003-03-27

if youve seen the old movie hackers, then you'll love this. I love the dysfunctional family life of brother and sisters, the way the main character is a female, who feels alienated from the world around her because everyone else feels inferiror to her talents. Its a well written series, ive read all three hex books, and i was compleatly satisfied...hmmm, well it woul dhave been good if there was a little romance, but you probably cant have that. You fall in love with Raven, and hate the people she hates, you find them utterly annoying :D its a gotta read

    4 out of 5 stars Well Done.......2002-06-11

The book was very well done. A bit cliche, but a good read all the same. The characters are believable and the book doesn't make you want to gag with details and mindless information. The only real complaint I have is something seemed to be missing from the explanation. I couldn't finger it, but there was just something not there. But it's definately worth picking up.

    5 out of 5 stars A Friend.......2006-03-19

Rhiannon Ryall was my teacher at a time when I did not know what direction to take. Her West Country Wicca book opened some doors for me but still left me with questions until she sent me a copy of the "Keltic Lore and Druidic Ritual" book. It answered many of my questions and even though I did not have all the answers I was looking for it did point me in a positive direction. I personally knew and wrote Rhiannon for almost 3 years but then we lost track of each other. She was a dear and kind woman with a great deal of wisdom and compassion. I cared about her very much and only wish I could have gotten the opportunity to meet her and know so much more.
To the person who made the statement that she stole this information, I have it on good authority that she obtained this information with permission from some Druid friends. If said person would like to discuss this further you can reach me at my email address of - druid717@sympatico.ca. I can provide you with proof to the contrary of your statements. Also no group, or person can claim that all there information is there own. We all have sources that we draw from for our information, so to say that someone stole that information is ludicrous given the fact that it is information that she could have very well learned when she was growing through her path or information that was shared with her. However, if she plagiarized information from a copyrighted or published source without permission that is another matter. To make an accusation without the possibility of rebuttal is the act of a coward and should be ignored.

5 out of 5 stars A friend in the West.......2001-12-12

This book was not written for people who want things handed to them on a platter. She explains that she wrote all her books in a traditional way,so that when the learner is ready ,she/he will understand.I read this one and all her others every once in a while and I learn and understand new things as I change and grow.I wish all the books on the paths were written in such a manner. Then, the price We pay is definately worth it....a true teaching and teacher!

    1 out of 5 stars Stolen.......2001-04-25

I was initiated into the druidic group from which Mrs. Ryall stole the info presented in this book, almost word for word. Further, the group that it was stolen from is not very druidic - most of the concepts are closer related to Hebrew and Christian mysticism than to actual pagan practices. There are much better works out there (also much better written and presented) than this.

    4 out of 5 stars Interesting.......1999-03-19

I have actually met the author of this book, and own other titles written by her. The purpose of Keltic Lore & Druidic Ritual was not as a BOS or "how to", but rather to explain a tradition familiar to the author - what was celebrated, how and when. It is not a book that I would recommend to a beginner or someone who has just started studying Celtic traditions. However, for the experienced practitioner or student, it makes an interesting read. I will always treasure my copy.

4 out of 5 stars Those with ears to hear and eyes to see..........1998-11-16

The style is scattered, and it certainly is not like popular 'cookbook' approaches to magic. No, it is not a training manual, or BOS. It is bits of lore and ritual pointing to a pre-Gardnerian tradition. It requires readers to do a bit of work on their own in order to benefit from the information. It is not a book for the novice, as it will appear mostly meaningless and jumbled. Finally a book with information that isn't spoon fed to the reader
