My 10 year old reads science fiction and no other stories. He took this book up feeling inquisitive and went on to finish the book, he really seems to have understood the need of organizational skill for him to continue to succeed in the latter parts of school year (by which time his desk is filled with papers!)

I hope to fill the other 2 stars when he actually practices what the book preached!

5 out of 5 stars My blood pressure went down by 20 points.......2007-09-14

I actually starting using the Dash diet and some of the supplements, not all. In a few days my blood pressure started to go down dramatically. It's amazing how much salt there is in everything. You really have to read labels and of course a lot more fruits and veggies!

    5 out of 5 stars Great information.......2007-06-02

All in all, very good reading. Nothing new here, just ties together all facets of controlling your high blood pressure: vitamins, supplements, exercise, diet and stress reduction. Presents a variety of programs and explains in detail how each can potentially lower and control hypertension. A good "how to" book to keep handy and refer to often. I have started the program and after only 3 weeks, my blood pressure has dropped. I plan to "wean" myself off the high blood pressure medication I am on now and go "totally natural".

    5 out of 5 stars book review.......2006-02-25

This book offers a wide variety of treatment options (dietary/ behavioral modification, use of various supplements) in the treatment of hypertension, as well as a comprehensive review of the prescription medications available for this condition. I found the dietary suggestions quite helpful, and this is one of the few books I have read which offers sound advice on use of dietary supplements as well as their presumed mechanism of action.

3 out of 5 stars This book should not be your only source of information.......2005-08-04

I'm only giving this book 3 stars because I think someone needs to temper the other reviews with some common sense.

This book is a good starting point for anyone dealing with or concerned about hypertension, but before investing in and ingesting all of the supplements recommended on pages 132-133, I think a person needs more information from additional reputable sources to be certain they fully understand the risks and benefits of taking any of these nutrients in supplemental form. There are risks of adverse side effects and toxicity from supplements that are not there when you get what you need from the foods you eat. Those risks vary with things such as your age, pregnancy, illness, surgery, and medications you may be taking, not just the dosage. Each person's circumstance's are unique, so these recommendations should not be considered one-size-fits-all. I don't think this book emphasizes enough how important it is to keep your doctor current about any herbs and supplements you are taking and in what doses.

Below is some of the references I use to better understand the functions and risks of all of the nutritional supplements out there. They will open your eyes about how cautious you need to be about any supplements you take.

    5 out of 5 stars A Must-Read.......2004-11-03

Dr. Mark Houston's book promoting nutrition and a healthy lifestyle as potent weapons in the fight against high blood pressure is absolutely excellent. It is refreshing to see an esteemed medical professional embrace alternative therapies rather than relying solely on prescription drugs and vague instructions to "lose weight, exercise, and eat healthier foods." It contains not only useful information and easy-to-understand guidelines for those battling hypertension, but also practical, sound advice for anyone seeking a healthier lifestyle. I recommend this book with the highest enthusiasm!

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars All God Wants of Man is a Peaceful Heart. .......2006-08-30

This is a rather small book, but it packs a whallop...not in a brutal way, but in a way that cuts through the layers of dirt and debris that we have allowed to collect upon our hearts and souls and get straight to the center of the situation where we find God.

When we empty ourselves of pre-conceived ideas, judgments, worries, and doubts we find that God has always been at the center of our lives; we find that it's not our busy-ness that matters, but it's those times where we're able to get still and quiet that make the most difference. People say they just don't seem to find the time without even realizing we are always in the midst of Eternity.

I carry this book in my car and sometimes I am rushed and frantic and filled with the things of the world, but I'll glance over and see this book and at a red light, I'll just flip to a page and read a small passage,

"We are celebrating the feast of the Eternal Birth which God the Father has borne and never ceases to bear in all eternity... But if it takes not place in me, what avails it? Everything lies in this, that it should take place in me..."

I breathe this statement in...I breathe it out...I let myself remember that I am always One with God. That all fear, all worry, all doubt is not because God really isn't there, but because I have somehow cut myself off from the Divine Flow.

This is a great book of reminders from a thoughtful and generous Christian mystic who knew God in himself...maybe this is why we are all here, to make that great discovery for ourselves that we are in God and God is in us and all is One.

    Great book!

5 out of 5 stars The Four-Fold Way of Love........2005-06-20

This is an excellent translation, or version, of Meister Eckhart's "Wayless Way". The way of the passive mind and the active heart, the contemplative way of being silent and listening. "In the midst of the silence the secret word was spoken unto me". (Sermons and Treatises, Sermon One.) Matthew Fox is true to the spirit of Meister Eckhart's thoughts concerning the spiritual life. Meister Eckhart was, and Matthew Fox is, an optimist where human potential is concerned. Life is such that there are basically two ways of looking at the same reality. The glass is half full, or the glass is half empty. Our Creator has given us free will. We choose our reality, or at least co-create it with our attitude toward it. Religiously minded pessimists view Man as essentially flawed, sinful, the Original Sin tradition. This type tends to be judgmental dividing Heaven from Earth. Those more optimistically inclined choose to focus on Man's potential to change and represent the Creation-Centered spiritual tradition. That there is a spark of Divinity within each of us gives this type reason for hope where man is concerned. The Kingdom of God is found within, Heaven is as much below our feet as above our head. Man is a bridge between the material and the spiritual realms. Same reality, two different ways of looking at it. In my opinion those that say man cannot change only have the right to speak for themselves. I have always been a bit of a rebel where the status quo is concerned. We are not static, we can change, grow, mature. God does not require perfection, God is perfection, God's mercy is whole. God sets the example for the rest of us to follow. The way to follow God is the way of love. The underlying unity of life's dualities is compassion, love. Love is the Wayless Way that brings us into unity with God, selfless love.

Let me be clear on this point. I feel it is pivotal. God has given us but one way to spiritual maturity, that way is love, agape love. Neither self-discipline, nor hope, nor faith, nor religion, nor science, is capable of changing our heart. Only true love changes the heart. Jesus reduced all of the law down to the triune commandment of love. Matthew 22:36-40. The Apostle John said, "God is Love". 1 John 4:16. The great Sufi mystic and poet Rumi once said, "The Love/Religion has no code or doctrine. Only God".

"Every human person is an aristocrat,
every human person is noble and of royal blood.
Who is more noble than someone who is born,
    on the one hand,
from the highest and best that a creature possesses
and who on the other hand,
    is born
from the intimate depths of the divine nature
    and the divine wilderness?"

    M.E.

There is much food for prayerful thought here. As Meister Eckhart noted, "God is like a great underground river". Meditation is the art of digging one's own sacred well into the river of living water that flows beneath, through, and beyond our everyday lives. Our spade is humility, our pick is compassion, our cup is our heart.

5 out of 5 stars Deceptively Short Book.......2004-01-27

As the previous reviewer points out, this book is small only in size. I stumbled into Meister Eckhart upon recommendations at my Zen center from both Buddhist and Christian practitioners (in my lineage many religions come together to practice zazen). I was amazed by what I found. I bought this book for 50 cents, and a 50 cents well spent! My idea, if I had to be said to hold one (of God), is that of a void or nothingness. Some call this point God, some call this point emptiness or void, or even nothing. Nearly anywhere I read "God" in here, if I am to replace it with void, or Tao, it reads just like a work from a Buddhist text. Meister Eckhart was truly an "enlightened man", for he did not allow himself to dizzy in spells of notion sickness. Not surprisingly, as with all the great mystics and prophets throughout history in Christianity, Eckhart was declared a heretic; simply because there was no understanding of his very metaphysical and transcendent views of "God." Ironically, Matthew Fox, the editor and compiler the book, had been excommunicated from the church by the Vatican, and consequently "booted" from the Dominican order. That's a shame, why must it always be in hindsight, that we acknowledge the wisdom of open minds?

    Enjoy this VERY deep book

5 out of 5 stars Excellent and inspiring meditation thoughts.......1998-12-27

This book is small only in size. It is one of the best and most inspiring of guides to meditation. Meister Eckhart lived in the 14th century, yet his writings, especially those chosen in this book, are amazingly up to date. The beauty of the poetic expression leads the reader to that quiet place of beauty and joy and peace, helping the heart to open and expand, and transcending all to be: 'one with one, one from one, one in one, and externally one in one'. I recommend this book to all spiritual seekers, no matter what the level. To all Lovers of Truth and Beauty and Joy.

    4 out of 5 stars Telling one's stories.......2007-01-20

This book is a guide to self-discovery through crafting the stories that make up one's personal mythology. It was developed as a written version of some of the material that Sam Keen developed in workshops on personal mythology that he conducted for many years with Joseph Campbell. Each chapter contains a short set of readings around a philosophical theme, a set of questions and suggestions for writing, and some samples of other people's writing on these topics, all supplemented by quotations in the margins by well-known authors, especially Joseph Campbell. The reading material is organized chronologically, starting with the present, then looking back into the past, forward into the future, and out into "cosmic time".

This book could be used either for personal exploration, or as a guide for a writing group. It's not ideal for memoir writing, since the prompts tend to elicit individual stories rather than a long view that would encompass an entire life. On the other hand, some readers may find it quite useful for exploring the experiences that have played a large role in shaping the emotional aspects of their lives. One piece of advice the authors share with readers is, "The past is open to revision because memory is a function of present intention. History is always constructed to prove some point." Thus, the approach is not only to help readers develop their stories, but to become aware of why these stories have the personal import that they do.

    5 out of 5 stars Your Song.......2002-12-07

I have read a few of Sam Keens books up to now and I am always amazed that he can write about philosophy, psychology or mythology with such compassion. "Your Mythic Journey", on the other hand, is not so much a book, rather a guided tour. Originally published in 1973 under a different title, "Telling Your Story: A Guide to Who You Are and Who You Can Be," was changed later when mythology became the buzzword for intellectuals. Sam Keen has worked closely with mythologist Joseph Campbell in his later years in which modern psychology was married with mythology.

Keen realized the power of storytelling, not just in a mythological approach, but also in telling the stories of our own lives how we are all living the lives of the great heroes. "Your Mythic Journey" helps you to discover the story in your own life and understand it mythologically as well as practically. The book is not one to be read, but to be written. This is done through a series of writing and drawing exercises facilitated through a series of deep probing questions. These questions are designed to challenge yourself, your beliefs, your values and your identity where you plunge the depths of your unconscious and swim the currents of time past, present and future. When you finally come to the shores of waking reality, you soon have a new understanding of yourself and the world you live in.

There are a number of ways to utilize this book. The first is you can do it by yourself, and go through and answer the questions. The second is to do it with a group of friends, family or your lover. The latter approach can also be done on a silent level, where one reads the questions for all to answer, or you can read each other your answers, which I found adds a whole new dimension to the process. It can become very emotional for some, shameful for others, enlightening to most, and discouraging to few. Regardless of your response, no doubt it will be revealing. The trick is to be honest with yourself and not hide behind that social mask thinking people will look down on your for having "other" thoughts. When you do this in a group session, you realize your "other" thoughts are not so different.

The aim of "Your Mythic Journey" is to be revealing about yourself, but also to know and tell the story of your life. What Mr. Keen has always expressed in his lectures and readings is that people tend to get stuck on various stories and end up repeating them over and over like a broken record. He remarks this with the example of recovering alcoholics who continue to tell their story of being addicted and how they went to AA meetings for recovery. They go on telling the story to everyone as if they are always at a meeting. This book challenges those that are repeating stories to begin to tell new stories of their lives and experiences. We all have them it's just a matter of beginning to share them with others.

5 out of 5 stars A gem of a book, deep but compassionate........2000-08-09

This is a brilliant book for those who believe in journalling as a therapeutic path. The authors adress life's main conflicts, and structure the basic questions to be answered by the reader in terms of Joseph Campbell's work. This book combines intellectual rigor with heartfelt warmth, in a combination so rarely seen in similar books. I love this subject and own a lot of material on it, but I find that many other volumes either fall in the sirupy, newagey category or are dry and academic. This a slim book, but it is worth every cent if you actually work with it.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent for Family Storytelling and Life Planning.......1999-05-04

Who but Matthew Fox--former Dominican priest, author of countless influential books such as Original Blessing and The Reinvention of Work, silenced by the Vatican for his controversial statements about creation spirituality, and now an Episcopal priest--would combine rave dances with a religious mass? And who else would now attempt such a distillation of the world's religions as this book brings us? Combining writings from a multitude of spiritual traditions, Fox here puts into practice the idea of deep ecumenism that he has been exploring in a series of books going back to The Coming of the Cosmic Christ in 1989. To accomplish this task, Fox focuses on four categories of spiritual inquiry that he sees running like a river through all spiritual traditions: how we relate to creation, to divinity, to ourselves (this includes topics such as meditation, art, ritual, sexuality), and, finally, how we relate to the future, a section that explores issues of service and compassion, justice and spiritual warriorhood. He then concludes with "18 New Myths and Visions" that summarize his central message.

Simplicity and clarity are the goals of this book. To achieve this Fox weaves his own brief commentary through a series of quotations drawn from a myriad of traditions. While it may be faulted by some for this method of making easy connections between traditions, the book serves its purpose as a kind of primer for deep ecumenism. It will be especially useful for those new to such ideas, and to those who might otherwise never meet Hildegard of Bingen and Julian of Norwich, Hafiz, and the Sufi Ibn Arabi--not to mention Thomas Aquinas, physicist Werner Heisenberg, and geologian Thomas Berry--all sharing each other's company. --Doug Thorpe

    Book Description

Maverick theologian Matthew Fox brings readers into the common heart of the world's great religions, illuminating a "deep ecumenism" for seekers everywhere.

We get to the core of religion by going to the heart experience, Matthew Fox says, not by dwelling on doctrines that so easily divide even within religious traditions. In One River, Many Wells, Fox exhorts readers to embrace the common faith of deep ecumenism.

Fox masterfully distills the common principles of the world's religions, and shows exactly how the different fingers of world faiths connect to a single hand. Drawing on seminal quotes, lessons, and ideas from the great faiths, he demonstrates how each expresses a common goal and approach to life, and concludes the book with "18 New Myths and Visions" that will inspire readers to embrace deep ecumenism.

One River, Many Wells is an indispensable resource, envisioning a new and exciting way of faith that erases the lines of false distinction between religions and calls upon each of us to worship from our common heart.

5 out of 5 stars Diverse Paths but One Experience.......2006-01-01

This book by Matthew Fox is a wealth of information derived from many sources, the Old and New Testaments (Bible), the Koran, the Vedas, African religious traditions, Native American, Celtic sources, and Buddhism. Writing it must have been a huge undertaking but amazingly, the information flows *naturally* as it reveals the outpouring of Spirit in the lives of mankind throughout the world and over the millenia. Many of the experiences described are words which attempt to capture Divinity at work through particular individuals, societies, and their outcomes. The book is an *essential* exploration of mankind's relationship to each other, community, the earth, and the cosmos. It is an exploration of the meaning of Life itself. Like a previous reviewer, I had difficulty getting started. Initially, I tried reading it straight through but could not. Gradually, at different times, glancing at the chapters, I felt a surge of energy. The ideas and concepts explored by the author set my emotions and mind at ease. Eventually, I was able to "plunge in" and "swim" through the material with relative ease.

The book is divided into five sections, "Relating to Creation", "Relating to Divinity", "Relating to Ourselves: Paths to Encounter and Enlightenment", "Relating to the Future: What the Divine is Asking of Us", and "Where Do We Go from Here? How Deep Ecumenism Explodes our Imaginations with Eighteen New Myths and Visions". Each section has further subdivisions where the author expands on specific themes, such as, Creation, Light, Community, the Names of God, Form, Formlessness, Nothingness, the Divine Feminine, Meditation, Mindfulness, Art and Ritual, Joy, Suffering, and Dying, Resurrection and Reincarnation, the Spiritual Warrior and other topics. Each theme is given a thorough examination connecting many different cultural viewpoints and providing unique insights. The author's vast experience in the realm or religion and personal enlightenment, along with his courage to tackle controversial subjects is greatly appreciated and admired.

The author's vision for mankind is very broad and inclusive ... he sees beyond the barriers of dogmatic belief, ritual, and any other differences that separate people. He gets down to *personal* experiences as expressed by the Great Spirit of Life in the vast expanse of time both from the past, in the present and future. The subject is spiritual expression in the lives of humanity and how the many different ideas and experiences have only One source. This is a very highly recommended book for anyone who is interested in comparative religions and spirituality. Also recommended is "One Heart" by Bonnie Louise Kuchler. Her book is an excellent source of quotations and meditations from different religions and spiritual practices. It is a less complex but similar work. Many readers who find Matthew Fox too deep would benefit from her book. Erika Borsos (erikab93)

5 out of 5 stars The Universal Church of God........2004-09-20

Fox is giving the hounds of the status quo a run for their money with this near encyclopedic outline about fighting the good fight. Those with an open mind and heart will find much food for thoughtful contemplation here. Fox admits his book is in no way complete. That it is meant to be suggestive of what future Scriptures will and must contain; wisdom from all Wisdom traditions, a bias in favor of what we have in common; a religious humility that lets traditions other than our own speak for themselves; a use of primary sources; God as experience, not doctrine... Fox succeeds in his stated goal.

This book is an encouragement for fighting the good fight. For becoming a spiritual warrior. Anyone can be a soldier telling the Emperor or their Priest or their Boss what he or she wants to hear. Being a warrior means taking a stand. A warrior has a dignity a soldier never realizes. The warrior fights his holy wars with internal enemies before going on any external jihad. The enemies of personal pride and greed and such. Anyone can be a brute, or a terrorist, in the name of God or Country. Fox points out that even in Islam there is a distinction between a lesser and a greater jihad. The greater jihad being that struggle against one's own demons. As the Sufi mystic Hafiz states, battle without love, can render a person mad. As I like to say, it does not matter what a person believes if they don't have love in their heart.

With that said, "One River, Many Wells" is well worth the read. It is a very good outline to work from regarding one's own spiritual journey. Fox brings to light what Meister Eckhart said 700 years ago, "God is like a great underground river." Thus "One River, Many Wells" is short for One Underground River (Source, God), Many sacred Wells-religious traditions. Again, as I like to say, God speaks to anyone that will listen. To meditate is to dig one's own sacred well. Be still and know that I am God. There are no atheists in Foxholes.

2 out of 5 stars What is he thinking.......2001-11-18

It's hard to tell where Matthew Fox is and where he is going. His books have been a trail of hit and, mostly miss, wanderings.

He recognizes a common source for spiritual reality. And yet he pushes an ecumenical (and even New-Age) agenda to try and mold all existing beliefs into a vision that it cannot be. 'Only if the religions of the world would stand together...' These religions are organizations with their own agendas and systems. Perhaps Fox should listen to the Dali Lami who said that ultimately there is no reconciliation between the *religions* of Buddhism and Christianity. There may be one spirit, but not a single religion or even meaningful coordination of them. (Vivikenanda says that would be very boring.)

Mysticism is the root of all real spiritual experience and Fox knows this. But each religion is an outgrowth (and hence not true development) of the founder who had the mystical experience. The goal of any true (spiritual) path is personal experience. Fox keeps attempting to join all religions (forms) into a great ecumenical mandala and this cannot be done. Personal experience is always unique. It is wisdom that we can see from other beliefs. But Fox keeps on pushing in yet another book.

To be perfectly clear, his inclusion of various spiritual and mystical source in this book is commendable. Everyone else is realizing wisdom of many sources so why not M.Fox. However his approach is always one of 'Look how great what I am saying is'. He claims great visions and breakthroughs for humanity if we will just believe what he is saying. Check his past books. He always does this.

The inclusion and recognition of various sources does not, in his writings, yield meaningful synthesis. This is because there is no coherent meaning to be achieved through shallow or 'deep' ecumenism (joining of outward forms). Neither by dancing, or having estatic sex, or by bringing in ethics or spirituality to work (all themes of his). Neither volumes of writing nor diversity of inputs has meaning on its own. There is no substantial vision presented in his works that rises above religion (form) and beyond his own (elevated) concepts of how things should be. His previous books have not resulted in major changes to society and it does not appear this one will have much effect either.

5 out of 5 stars FINDING IT ALL IN ONE PLACE.......2001-09-03

I had a difficult time getting started in this book. I'd picked it up and put it down several times. But once into it, it was a pleasant surprise. I read about spiritual matters and paths of every religion and each reading talks of it's own spicific area of knowledge and experience. But Matthew Fox picks a subject and covers it from all angles, Jewish, Catholic, Islamic, Hindu, Buddist, Native American, African American, even the Celtic and the Goddess. It's a great book and a great read. And then you know why you like to study them all.

5 out of 5 stars As complete a tome of spiritual knowledge possible.......2000-12-13

Matthew Fox has outdone himself with this work, taking similar themes from the works of mystics spanning diverse traditions. To those who are regular consumers of Fox's writings, this compellation provides a "Bible" for his idea of "Deep Ecumenism". It is as complete a tome of humanity's spiritual knowledge that I have seen on the bookshelf. The best part- Fox has included sources not just from typical religious sources, but from science and literature as well.

5 out of 5 stars It's so good that people copy this book and never give Emmit credit .......2005-10-01

After I read Emmit Fox's book "The Ten Commandments" I had to read more of his books. Emmit has the ability to make life's frustrations seem so simple to remedy.

Once your read the "The Seven Day Mental Diet: How to Change Your Life in a Week", you might think it's too simple to work.

I know this, there is a formula for everything you want in life. A simple formula, at that. That problem with affecting significant change is that most people don't stay the course. They get sidetracked, either in an hour or a few days and forget about the possibility of change.

I sounds banal, but our thoughts are just as potent and real as bullets. Read and USE the Seven Day Mental Diet and you'll see just how powerful those thoughts are.

The formula for change is simple. Decide what you're going to do and do it. To many of us are screwing up on the "doing" part (me included).

One culprit in this "screwing up" scenario are those thoughts that stay with you 24-7. If you can't control and feed your thoughts, which always proceed your actions, you can never change.

I hope you will use this mental diet and enjoy the positive changes that come from it.

Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh, by Matthew Fox, is a big, exuberant, difficult book. It's a new theology that re-evaluates fundamental Christian methods of perceiving spirit and flesh by denying any hard and fast distinction between the two. Even more radically, Fox denies that goodness and sinfulness can be cleanly distinguished. Following to its logical conclusion Thomas Aquinas's belief that sin is misdirected love, Fox describes parallels between the Seven Deadly Sins of Christianity and the seven chakras of Eastern traditions--how, for example, even the ugliest expressions of lust are, at their root, corrupt expressions of a God-given desire for union with another. In this regard, Fox quotes the German mystic Meister Eckhart: "Everything praises God. Darkness, privations, defects, and evil praise God and bless God." Sins of the Spirit is so complex and ambitious that its structure and language often become knotty and abstruse; however, Fox always returns to his central goal, "to ground our sense of sinfulness--and of awe--in the body." For this reason, Sins of the Spirit is a landmark of popular contemporary writing about Christian theology. It points the way to a time when we might learn to live out our confession that God's incarnation is the reason for our faith. --Michael Joseph Gross

    Book Description

In Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh, visionary theologian and best-selling author Matthew Fox offers a new theology that fundamentally changes the traditional perception of good and evil and points the way to a more enlightened treatment of ourselves, one another, and all of nature. Through its marriage of spirit and flesh, Fox's Theology of Spirit sets forth a visionary but practical mysticism that lays out a blueprint for social transformation.

In this book, Matthew Fox dissects the roots of our culture's spiritual malaise and offers Creation Spirituality and a Theology of Spirit as the "medicine" for our society's deep spiritual "wounds." He shows how, contrary to mainstream church teachings, flesh is the grounding of spirit, and how spirit and flesh are entwined with each other in a felicitous and spiritually nourishing bond. He outlines a Theology of Spirit, an approach to the fusing of spirit and flesh which has been underdeveloped in Western thought. His cosmology stresses the need for diversity, the revelatory power of Nature, and the imperative of cooperation.

Fox draws together the wisdom of East and West on the subject of human destructiveness by taking Thomas Aquinas's definition of sin as "misdirected love" and ushering us through parallels between the Eastern teachings of the seven chakras and the Western teachings of the seven capital sins. In doing so, he responds to Martin Buber's call to "deprive evil of its power" not by "extirpating the evil urge, but by reuniting it to the good." Psychologist M. Scott Peck has said that humanity's naming of evil "is still in the primitive stage." With this book, Fox ushers us beyond rudimentary naming and places our capacity for evil in the fuller context of our touching the natural beauty of our physical world, the complex texture of our emotional lives, and the splendid depths of our spiritual center.

In Sins of the Spirit, Blessings of the Flesh Matthew Fox has created his most ambitious and profound book. The text crackles with his intelligence and wit, deftly moving the reader into an examination of our world and our perceptions about it and ourselves, expanding our minds and showing us paths of thought that you would swear were not there before you turned the page.

Another great book by Matthew Fox. I humbly suggest you get the musical CD called "7" by Chip Davis (Mannheim Steamrollers)and thoroughly enjoy a new perspective on the sources of energy within and without the body combining Matthew's insights and the music of Chip Davis. Extraordinary.

    5 out of 5 stars A blessing to read.......2001-05-08

As usual, Matthew Fox takes readers on a spiritual journey of awakening. Full of insight, this book was especially of interest to me beacause of the holistic, Earth-based message found within. I did not find this book especially difficult, although that may be because my field of study is in this area. Perhaps if one merely reads the words it can be. However, it is almost impossible not to connect on a spiritual level with the meaning intended. Sometimes a book must be felt as well as read and Fox seems to write with that intention.

5 out of 5 stars His Best Yet..........1999-12-17

The depth of this book reflects the profundity of its author. Matt Fox has always been a genius at research, synthesis and cogent analysis. There are so many interesting, difficult to come by facts which are all presented in the context of understanding our place in the cosmos, our relationship with ourself, our Creator and each other. Thanks again Matt, for all the hard work in bringing this book to "light".

This was a Very thought provoking book, but I would not expect anything less from Sheldrake and Fox. I highly recommend reading other books by both of these men. They are both "fringe" thinkers but so was Galileo.

2 out of 5 stars Lot's of talk, but no delivery.......2004-03-05

I was disappointed with the delivery of this book based on the title. The only part I liked was the Thomas Aquinas part. There is nothing scientific about it. I expected more form Rupert being a biologist. Where's the Physics??? The authors assume alot but back none of their assumptions up. This book is so flawed on the angel debate, I could be here all day. It really annoys me when authors spew out thoughts and ramble on but don't offer any evidence. The pages on Satan & the dark angels are utterly laughable!!! These guys should of done alot more research!!! There's nothing here I didn't know already but I sure wish I was there when they were doing this book so I could correct them on the blatant mistakes & contradictions they made.

5 out of 5 stars Finally, a real angel book without the New Age pap!.......1999-10-22

If you, like me, believe that angels exist but are sick to death of mass-market New Age pablum books on angels, this book is for you. A highly respected theologian (Fox) and an equally respected biologist (Sheldrake) talk about science, nature, and angels, both the good and the bad. I think even an agnostic or skeptic would enjoy this book.

3 out of 5 stars VALUABLE AS OUTPUT OF A HIGH GENIUS.......2002-10-18

By all accounts Swedenborg was both a high genius and, in his later years, psychic...focused on developing a world view that encompassed heaven and hell, angels etc. As such this book is a collection of many of his remarks about the afterlife and heaven and hell. It has a dated feel in the sense that Swedenborgs views are firmly those of someone writing over 200 years ago...and it is a puzzle how to reconcile them with more "modern" writers/travellers on the path. The charitable view would be that, if what Swedenborg says is somehow true, then it is also filtered through the mindset of someone of his era (just as must be true of someone of our own era). This "dated" aspect of his ideas greatly reduced their value for me...but some of his ideas (eg about how we create our own heavens and hells) cannot be found elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Conversations with Angels: What Swedenborg Heard in Heaven.......2000-03-27

This is the first Swedenborg book I read and it introduced me to the whole fascinating world of his visions. I have read numerous books on angelic encounters, life after death, near death experiences, etc., but this book is truly unique. In this book, Swedenborg speaks about his experiences as he passes into the realms of heaven and encounters angels. He relates answers to questions he poses to the angels, things like:"Please teach me what happiness is." The angels respond, "Love in action gives a feeling of happiness. In heaven it acts with widsom, in hell with folly. Either way it makes its subect happy."

Unlike some books about channeling and similar processes, I had no trouble believing and understanding that the messages in this book were genuine. I felt comfortable with the fact that Swedenborg really spoke with higher realms and wasn't just creating this in his own mind.

If you're looking for an inspiring book to help you understand life on many levels, and are tired of the myriad NDE and angelic encounter books that abound, you'll enjoy this one!
