Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.

Book Description

This book combines Elite 67: `Pirates 1660-1730', Elite 69: `Buccaneers 1620-1700' and Elite 74: `Privateers and Pirates 1730-1830'. Text by Angus Konstam, plates by Angus McBride. This book tells, in beautifully illustrated detail, the full story of piracy from its origins in the 16th century to the last great piratical wave in the early 19th century. It explores the lives of well-known buccaneers who carried out their raids under the protection of the English crown and the privateers that were relied on by the American Navy during the American Revolution to disrupt British shipping between England and the rebellious colonies. Other subjects covered include the ships, weaponry used, codes of behaviour and the lives of the colourful characters that roamed the high seas searching for plunder.

5 out of 5 stars Worth the Doubloons.......2006-01-22

This is a collection of three Osprey books, so you need to think in terms of an adult version of the Eyewitness picture books. You shouldn't expect an exhaustively comprehensive treatment of the subject matters, after all each book tends to be only 1/4 inch thick.

So, with expectations aligned, this collection includes Buccaneers 1620-1700, Pirates 1660-1730 and Privateers and Pirates 1730-1830. There are quite a few pictures to compliment the text, including maps, wood cuts and those provided by Angus McBride.

In Buccaneers the topics covered include their origins, attire, weapons, ships, havens and tactics. Konstam gives us some brief biographies of a few of the famous names like Morgan, Myngs, Nau, Grammont and de Graaf.

In Pirates the topics covered include their origins, dress, tactics, flags, ports and ships. Konstam gives us some brief biographies of a few of the famous names like Teach, Bonny, Reade, Rackam, Vane, Every, Bonnet, Kidd and the Dread Pirate Roberts.

In Privateers the topics covered include their origins, methods, ports and ships. Konstam gives us some brief biographies of a few of the famous names like Haraden, Talbot, Jones, Surcouf, Boyle, Laffite, de Soto and Gibert.

An excellent collection of overviews suitable for adolescents and adults, for more on piracy through the ages I suggest Konstam's The History of Pirates.

5 out of 5 stars A great history about pirates!!!.......2003-02-09

This is so far the best book ive came across having to do with the subject of pirates. This book covers the many different aspects of piracy such as privateering, buccaneers, the golden age of piracy, and all the well known pirates such as Jack Rackam (Calico Jack), Bartholomew Roberts (Black Bart), Edward Teach (Black Beard), Charles Vane, Captain Kidd, and many others. This book also covers all of the weapons, types of clothing and ships used by pirates. It goes into detail about many of the famous activities carried out by pirates. The illustrations in the book are well down and are a joy to look at! I recommend this book to anyone interested in this subject. But if your already familiar with pirates, then you will want something bigger with more detail and more artwork!

Surely this exhaustingly-researched, enthralling and enthusiastically-written tome is the last word on the most famous of all seafaring mutinies, that of shipmate Fletcher Christian and against Lieutenant Bligh on the Bounty. More than 200 years have gone by since the ship left England after dreadful weather kept it harbored for months, on its mission to transport breadfruit from Tahiti to the West Indies. The mutiny in Tahiti left the mutineers scattered about the paradisiacal islands and found Bligh and 18 of his loyal crew members set adrift in a 23-foot open boat. Bligh, who'd served as Capt. James Cook's sailing master, fantastically maneuvered the crew on a 48-day, 3,600-mile journey to safety. Caroline Alexander, author of The Endurance, is never in over her head even when weaving together densely twisting narratives, or explaining the unwritten rules of the Royal Navy, of the complexities of class and hierarchy that impelled much of what happened aboard the Bounty. The book centers far more on the effort to round up the mutineers than the actual mutiny itself. The book is enlivened by the colorful commentary of the crew members themselves, gleaned from letters and court documents. Alexander does us all the favor of presenting Bligh the way he was understood and received in his day--as a brilliant navigator who, when placed in context, was not a brutal task-master at all. She roots the tyrannical figure we know so well from the movies on the last-ditch efforts of one well-connected crew member to save his own hide from hanging. --Mike McGonigal

Book Description

More than two centuries have passed since Master's Mate Fletcher Christian mutinied against Lieutenant Bligh on a small, armed transport vessel called Bounty. Why the details of this obscure adventure at the end of the world remain vivid and enthralling is as intriguing as the truth behind the legend.

In giving the Bounty mutiny its historical due, Caroline Alexander has chosen to frame her narrative by focusing on the court-martial of the ten mutineers who were captured in Tahiti and brought to justice in England. This fresh perspective wonderfully revivifies the entire saga, and the salty, colorful language of the captured men themselves conjures the events of that April morning in 1789, when Christian's breakdown impelled every man on a fateful course: Bligh and his loyalists on the historic open boat voyage that revealed him to be one of history's great navigators; Christian on his restless exile; and the captured mutineers toward their day in court. As the book unfolds, each figure emerges as a full-blown character caught up in a drama that may well end on the gallows. And as Alexander shows, it was in a desperate fight to escape hanging that one of the accused defendants deliberately spun the mutiny into the myth we know today-of the tyrannical Lieutenant Bligh of the Bounty.

Ultimately, Alexander concludes that the Bounty mutiny was sparked by that most unpredictable, combustible, and human of situations-the chemistry between strong personalities living in close quarters. Her account of the voyage, the trial, and the surprising fates of Bligh, Christian, and the mutineers is an epic of ambition, passion, pride, and duty at the dawn of the Romantic era.

4 out of 5 stars Well researched, good narrative.......2007-09-04

Very well researched audiobook with excellent narrative. Many historical points rarely mentioned by other historians of the event with a very good all round history of the events themselves. Narrative also never ceases to bore, a very important aspect of any audiobook.

5 out of 5 stars Exhaustive and gripping.......2007-08-27

Popular histories sometimes (not always, but often enough to notice) suffer from one of two things: a deliberate paring away of detail--be it description or incident--to make for easier reading or a slimmer volume, or a concerted refusal to acknowledge or explore information that does not gird the author's thesis. Caroline Alexander's The Bounty has neither condition: it is as exhaustive an examination of a single moment of history as anything I've ever read.

Which is not to say that the reading is not compelling. Alexander goes to some pains to strip away the romantic veneer covering over the facts of the mutiny and those culpable in its execution. Nor does she provide complete exoneration to Captain Bligh, who is revealed as an able, conscientious and decent man, whose few failings were amplified by a flawed crew and lack of support (mainly in the absence of marines on board The Bounty) from the Admiralty. Oddly, but appropriately for such a scholarly work, Alexander pieces together much of what is known about lead mutineer Fletcher Christian from the extant evidence, which in most cases is second hand.

The exhaustive nature of the book does tend to drag in places. The build up to court martial introduces the tiresome (no more here though than she was doubtlessly so in life) Fanny Hayward, along with detailed explanation of the members of the court martial. Interesting and ultimately useful in sorting out the fractured loyalties that defined these men and their subsequent actions, it does get to be slow reading.

But more than a story of one mutiny in the Pacific, it is a tale of a changing world, where the virgin paradise of Tahiti is imbued with the failings of the British Empire, where Nelson's final words, "thank God I have done my duty," are not the anthem of a subsequent age but an epitaph for a waning one. An epic worth reading.

5 out of 5 stars The best book on the topic in over a generation.......2007-08-07

Having studied the Bounty mutiny and its aftermath for nearly forty years now, I didn't feel as if there was much new material - but a friend who recommended this book to me did not steer me wrong.

Ms. Alexander's fresh treatment of the material - as well as her work to uncover new sources and provide a different look - is well worth the read. In particular, her research into the career of Bligh both before and after the mutiny; his use of common supplies to guarantee the health of the crew (learned no doubt from his travels with Captain Cook), and his later life all leant new and added dimension to a story which has gone stale with the telling.

Her postulation regarding Christian's return to England from Pitcairn Island is well-thought-out and well-researched. Perhaps some day we'll learn the truth here - and while it's likely to remain speculation, she makes a compelling point.

This book is worth the read for any student of the Bounty's history and the aftermath of the mutiny, both for Ms Alexander's writing-style and for her fresh research and treatment of the material.

5 out of 5 stars A Marvelous, Memorable Immersion in Real Life.......2007-07-25

One ought not to pick up a weighty book like this one expecting a comic book treatment or movie script. Reading this long tortuous story is difficult but superbly rewarding work. Your time is amply rewarded by the author whose every page rings with truth and insight. It is a story that will never die because it shows humanity in all its flavours and textures, at its best and its worst. The author makes few judgments of her own, letting the story as viewed from dozens of mouths speak for itself, usually. In the end you know where everyone came from, where they ended up, and what they said and did - a lot of information but told in a way that keeps you turning the pages and never jades. I am so glad I read this book! Thank you Caroline Alexander.

3 out of 5 stars Well researched ; neglects Polynesian perspective.......2007-07-09

Yes this is a well researched tome. However, there is an absolute dearth of any valid detailing of the Tahitian cultural context of the day. After all there was a great deal of interaction with this Polynesian society for all on the Bounty. Further enlightenment for the reader would have been gained with a least a cursory reference to Norman Hall and Nordhoff's (in)famous trilogy, which, lets face it has concretised "The Mutiny on the Bounty" into our modern consciouness,

Book Description

There was once a village bred by evil. On the barren coast of Cornwall, England, lived a community who prayed for shipwrecks, a community who lured storm-tossed ships to crash upon the sharp rocks of their shore. They fed and clothed themselves with the loot salvaged from the wreckage; dead sailors' tools and trinkets became decorations for their homes. Most never questioned their murderous way of life.

Then, upon that pirates' shore crashed the ship The Isle of Skye. And the youngest of its crew members, 14-year-old John Spencer, survived the wreck. But would he escape the wreckers? This is his harrowing tale.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Wreckers By Anna, Megan, & Brigida.......2007-03-13

Have you ever had your life on the line just because you survived a ship wreck? Well John Spencer has, in the thrilling book called The Wreckers. After John escapes the ship wreck, more trouble begins, when he is being chased by the wreckers. Iain Lawrence has a style that keeps you in suspense. You never really know what is going happen. The setting in the book was on the coast of an island, called Cornwall, which was supposedly haunted. The main characters, John Spencer and Mary go on many adventures to find Johns father. John is determined to find his father because he knows he's alive. One weak point of the book was when Mary's pony fell into the mine shaft. The author doesn't describe this scene that well. The strongest part of the book was when a deranged man without legs is chasing John. This is one of the important parts and it is very descriptive. The author is trying to convey is that you should never give up no matter what. When John tries to find his father, he goes through many rough times but he keeps at it and doesn't stop. This book would be good for 6th and 7th graders who are in to survival and suspenseful books.

4 out of 5 stars The Wreckers by Hashem, Chris and Zac.......2007-03-13

"Adventures, Extraordinary, Suspenseful"

Living the life as a sailor can be hazardous. It takes intelligences takes bravery, and as shown in the book The Wreckers, written by Iain Lawrence. This book is filled with adventure and excitement, as John Spencer tries to survive on the island of the wreckers. John, a fourteen year old boy survived a brutal boat crash into the tombstones of a mysterious island. After the boat crash, Johns father is taken away by a group called the wreckers. John is now desperate to find his father, and will search high and low, above and beyond to find him. On the island of the wreckers, it looks like it has been deserted for years. It also looks like an old country western town. Some strong points of the book are that the author uses strong verbs and adjectives, and has a very good and strong vocabulary. We would recommend to anyone who likes adventure, who likes suspense, and loves to be throne off their seat in amazement. Be sure to catch the sequal, The Smugglers, also by Iain Lawrence.

5 out of 5 stars The Wreckers.......2006-07-19

If you saw your rescuers drown a fellow sailor, would you trust them? That is exactly what John Spencer, a survivor of a mysterious shipwreck, wonders in the book 'The Wreckers'. As John enters the world of treachery, he finds that things aren't always what they seem. First of all, his true rescuer, Simon Mawgan, makes suspicious outings whenever a ship might be wrecked. This happens in many other homes in Pendennis, people getting ready for a shipwreck, getting ready to kill the survivors and plunder the ship. While he tries to solve the mystery of the mastermind behind all this, he also has the complication of finding his father. Will this determined fourteen-year-old defeat the wreckers, or will they defeat him?

Lawrence has written a remarkable tale that fascinates readers of all kinds and leaves you with characters hard to forget. It's treachery and justice make it exciting. 'The Wreckers' is an amazing story filled with mystery galore. This book is an adventure story packed with action and suspense, leaving you wanting for more.

This is a book of excitement and adventure that you would never want to miss. It's about a boy named John who is wrecked on shore by false beacons. Sad thing is, is that he is the only survivor.Once he is helped by a stranger he meets a girl that will be his guide and best friend forthe rest of his stay on the English province. Then after everything that has happened he realizes that his father is missing. After meeting a man with no legs, the man tells John that he has his father captive. So this book turns around and in to a race against time to find John's father before John is forced out of the province and back home. After freeing his father they decide to help a ship that is beeing enticed by the Wreckers. It's a great story that everyone should read. It is all about friendship, trust, and the right thing to dobut most of the book is about cruelty from salvaging ships to looting and murder of others.

4 out of 5 stars See if you can survive on this mysterious, murderous island! By Carri, Cheyenne, Shaina, and Anna.......2006-03-31

From sharp, rocky cliffs, to misleading lanterns, to a legless man, The Wreckers by Iain Lawrence is an exciting, heart stopping novel about trust and survival. John Spencer, his father, and his father's ship, The Isle of Skye, have wrecked on an un-mapped, mysterious island by supposedly misleading lanterns. While being hunted by vicious wreckers (who killed off the remains of his crew), John is on a quest to find his father who's being held captive by the legless man.

Simon Mawgan, a plump, wealthy character with unnatural mood swings who owns the land, and his brave, kind-hearted niece, Mary, take John in to help him survive. John, the main character, a semi-cowardly, suspicious, independent young man, has the ability to solve the mystery of the false beacons, but can he do it? Can use both his brain and his brawn?

Although the plot is a little predictable, it has strong voice and great description, especially when he describes his father's rotting foot. Ages ten and up for violence and shocking images.

of family cooperation, perseverance and adventure! I always thought I was the adventuresome type, but the Barry family puts me to shame. Following their trip from England to the U.S. was fun and insightful, plus a fantastic geography lesson for my 5th grader! He loved looking at the atlas to follow their route. It's so nice to find a book that's not only entertaining, but also educational. A great read!!!

Book Description

High adventure and chick lit combine as billionaire tycoon Jake Eastland nears the end of a long life of shady dealings, lost love, and failed relationships, and is given one final chance to atone. Themes of greed, lust, guilt, family karma, and the power of forgiveness play out as a granddaughter arrives whose relationship with Jake could change everything for both of them. This sprawling epic adventure of feuding families, prohibition rum-runners, and present-day treasure hunters is equally thrilling and heart-warming.

5 out of 5 stars This novel's mysteries unfurl with grace.......2007-10-11

The Secret Ever Keeps opens with a great start, the opening lifting off the page and not mired with a huge amount of exposition. This technique pays off in Tirrell's very readable, though flash-back filled, story of family wounds and secrets and adventure. Through the alternating views of a grandfather and granddaughter, the reader is immersed in the history of rum runners during the age of prohibition, with family dynamics and loyalties playing out across generations. If you enjoyed the unraveling mystery of Chris Bohjalian's The Double Bind, you will also love this story.

5 out of 5 stars The Secret is Out.......2007-10-08

Old age and the infirmities that come with it make one look back over one's life and wish for a way to atone for sins that seem never to leave us. We find ourselves remembering the wrongs we did and even consider tracking someone down to say I'm sorry. Old age brings with it cataracts, declining sight and aural affliction but it also brings with it a view of our past that is clear and becomes even clearer when we know not to buy green bananas.

Art Tirrell blends these elements into a fascinating story of forgiveness and redemption between two separate generations. Jake Eastland was a notorious rum running bootlegger during prohibition. It took a hard, ruthless man to make it in those turbulent days and Jake exemplified such a man. He did things that now, as he crosses off his remaining days, he wishes to atone for.

Tirrell sets the story in the waters of Lake Ontario where Laurel Kingsford is hunting for the whiskey Jake lost a half-century earlier completely unaware that the careless whiskey handler was her own grandfather. And, then they find an 18th century wreck and things get dicey.

It's an exciting story but its real charm is the way Jake comes to terms with his own life and the forces that drove him. He forgives himself which for most of us is very difficult.

Tirrell draws crisply defined characters and makes them live in our imagination. The secret is out - The Secret Ever Keeps is a secret no longer.

5 out of 5 stars Art Tirrell's fantastic book.......2007-10-08

I sail out of Rochester, NY, and found "The Secret Ever Keeps" by Art Tirrell to live up to its promise. This easy to read adventure novel is a fast paced book that is hard to put down.

I related to the areas on Lake Ontario as described in the book. At one point even Rochester was mentioned. Most of the action takes place at the port of Oswego. I can picture it now in my mind. Art knows his way around the lake.

I recommend this book for anybody that has sailed Lake Ontario. You won't be sorry.

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant underwater scenes...tremendous suspense!.......2007-09-14

In The Secret Ever Keeps, Art Tirrell weaves a rich story of a bitter family rivalry, Depression Era wheeling and dealing, and a thrilling underwater treasure hunt. Set on the southern shore of Lake Ontario, the novel shifts effortlessly between the present and the 1930s. Jake Eastland, a hard-nosed billionaire nearing the end of his life, attempts to make amends for his unscrupulous dealings in the past by reaching out to his sole living relative, a young woman who is unaware she even has a living grandfather. As they get to know each other, their disparate pasts arise to haunt them.

Tirrell's depiction of their slow-growing relationship is delicate and moving, but it is the suspenseful plot that keeps one flipping the pages. Tirrell quite simply writes the best underwater scenes I have ever read. He takes the reader down into the depths, and no matter how unfamiliar one is with this eerie, potentially deadly setting, one feels one knows exactly what it would be like to dive into the bowels of a sunken ship, to get one's line snagged or air cut off, to be caught and whipped away by a sudden current. Suffice it to say, you'll be breathless, until the secrets and ancient treasures are revealed.

The Secret Ever Keeps is a terrific debut novel for Tirrell. I know he has another in the works and can't wait till it hits the shelves.

The above is from an Amazon CA review by Meg Westley of Stratford, Ontario.

4 out of 5 stars You can run, but you can't hide.............2007-07-01

Art has written a beautifully paced book that effortlessly leads the reader through the dubious dealings of Jake, the aging head of the Eastland family. Secret is both intriguing and complex but Art's composition never leaves the reader out of touch. Ultimately we are reminded that no matter where we are, our past is never far behind and it is always best to turn to face it.

    Book Description

Artemesia is the daughter of a pirate queen, and she's sick of practicing deportment at the Angels Academy for Young Maidens. Escaping from the school, she hunts up her mother's crew and breezily commands them out to sea in a leaky boat. Unfortunately, Art's memories of her early life may not be accurate-her seasick crew are actors, and Art's infamous mother was the darling of the stage in a pirate drama. But fiery, pistol-proof Art soon shapes her men into the cleverest pirate crew afloat. And when they meet the dread ship Enemy and her beautiful, treacherous captain, Goldie Girl, Art is certain that her memories are real. The Seven Seas aren't large enough for two pirate queens: Art will have the battle of her life to win her mother's title--and the race for the most fabulous treasure in pirate lore. This gaudy, outrageous tale sparkles with swordplay, skullduggery, and salty language--not to mention over-the-top comedy!

    5 out of 5 stars I LOVE THIS BOOK!.......2007-07-20

Okay, first I just need to say, this book is not just for middle-to-high school readers. I would recommend it to anyone! I seriously LOVE this book. I didn't find any of it hard to read, or confusing at all, I thought it was unique and I liked the writing style. I read this book in two days and immediately got the sequel. I like that it's not one of those books where you know what's going to happen at the end; it's not the kind where you know there's going to be a happy ending. It kept me guessing until the last two or three pages. It's witty, full of romance (and that alone is enough to pull me in!), and engaging. You can tell it was really well thought out, and everything comes together in the end in a way that surprised me. The characters are wonderful, because they're not perfect. They have little quirks and real personalities. I loved it the first time I read it and now, two times later, I still do. Even if you don't buy this book, you should at least get it from the library. It's completely worth it!

5 out of 5 stars Adventurous and Satisfying!.......2007-05-12

Piratica was just the kind of book I was looking for; something about adventure on the seas. And all the unexpected twists and turns throughout really captures you! I've read many books, and this by far is my favorite. It satisfys every reader looking for adventure, romance, a good sword fight or two, and of course pirates!

4 out of 5 stars Great, worthwhile read.......2007-03-25

As a fourteen-year-old using (with permission) her mother's account, I really enjoyed this book.

The first time I saw it, I wasn't very interested by the description or cover, and only decided to get it because it was free (long story--I wasn't in a bookstore). But I was hooked within the first ten pages. Though the author uses a style which is hard to get into at first, it was a nice change of pace from the usual, standard way books are written, and overall I think it would not have been as good if it hadn't been written this way. The alternate universe thing is a tad confusing, but it makes sense that she should need to use it, for the plot would be different if England were a monarchy in the book.

As a hopeless romantic when it comes to books (that is, to a certain extent) I really liked the romance in this book. I actually thought she could have gone a bit more into that part, but I think she makes up for it in the sequel, which is also good to read after the first.

In this book the main character was not my favorite character, however. She seemed to me very much the stereotypical individual!independant!sexrole!strong!female, and while I'm all for that stuff, it gets old when it's always pointed out how she "wears man's clothes" and is a "fierce female pirate" who, for instance, gives her crew breaks at rowing the boats, but never stops for a rest herself. It's a little unrealistic that after 6 years at a girl's school she'd know everything about ships and sailing and is as strong as any man.

That rant over with, Felix is ceretainly an interesting enough character to make up for Art.

Overall, I really liked this book (despite complaints--there were more things good about it that I just didn't list) and it's sequel, as well. It's a good book for middle schoolers, probably, so anyone older or younger might not like it as much. I'm really looking forward to Tanith Lee releasing a third one, and hope it's as good as the first two.

2 out of 5 stars Mediocre, yet disapointing. .......2006-12-30

I didn't enjoy this book at all, and didn't even attempt to force myself to finish it. I might have enjoyed it if I had been brainwashed and forgot a couple of other amazingly well-written historical fiction about pirates, the navy, and the 18th century; but alas, I fully understood what a flop this book is.

What could be an enjoyable past time for some, is torture for me. Where is the suspense, the action, the gritty reality? I need something concrete, yet singular!

If you too were disapointed, check out the real deal, and some of the absolute BEST books on the market: The Bloody Jack Series by L.A. Meyers. Compared to his works of masterpiece, this stuff is complete trash.

2 out of 5 stars cliched and confusing.......2006-08-26

A nice pirate preteen chick empowerment fantasy about a girl who roams the seas with her mother's acting troupe. She searches for the obligatory treasure, fights her foil (another young girl, the daughter of her mother's murderer), refuses to kill anyone but relies on her wits, and falls in love with a revenge-motivated captured hottie. The plot dwells between predictable and unique (are they pirates or are they actors? But it hits all the pirate clichés). Art is the basic obnoxious but strong witted female teenager. Felix, her love interest, is mysterious, clumsy, and interesting enough to keep the readers' attention. But all the background pirates are difficult to distinguish from each other, which becomes a problem in the end of the book. The plot meanders and is pretty slow. The end sort of sucks all the joy of pirating by making Art noble. Also, the author's style is off. She randomly italicized things way too often. I had to read some sentences three or four times to figure out the pacing/voice. There are better pirate books to read. Grade: C-

    Book Description

"There’s pirates in the West Indies. Cannibals. They cook you alive," says Mr. Spencer to his son. These words will come to haunt 17-year-old John as he embarks on his first voyage to foreign lands. Carrying cargo destined for Jamaica, John and his crew of the Dragon set off for waters few of them have sailed before. So when they come upon a lifeboat adrift at sea, some are wary of the sailor aboard. Something about his story doesn’t quite make sense. Still, John respects the stranger’s awe-inspiring seamanship. With Horn on deck, he feels the Dragon is in the best of hands.
But is Horn to be trusted? The answer becomes muddled as the Dragon encounters a very real — and very dangerous — pirate ship. Now John starts to believe his father’s warnings, especially after he becomes stranded on an island reputed to have buried treasure. A place teeming with buccaneers!

I thought the book was hard to start but t was got better after a cupple chapters. There was alot of action latter in the book. I like a book wth alot of action in the whole book so i might be differnt for other people.

Once agn he only part I did not like is the begining. Al they did was sail around. I thought it good at the part with the storm. Also when they got to the island.

Over all t was very good book. I woul recamend you read the first two books before this one they do not talk about the characters very much. I like the plot and theme of this book. it was a good book.

5 out of 5 stars A Kids View Of The Buccaneers.......2005-04-07

This book is about a nineteen year old boy named John Spencer. He tells the story in his own perspective. In this book, the third book of a wonderful series about John and his many adventures at sea, John and his crewmates on The Dragon, battle pirates, deliver cargo to a port in the West Indies, find ghost ships at sea, and have many other exciting adventures before they return to their home country of England.

There are many great things about this book. I really appreciated how the author used descriptive words in almost every sentence. I also really liked the setting of the story, Central American waters in the early 1800's.

What can I say, the author did such a good job writing this book there is not to much he can improve on. He could probably describe the characters a little better though.

In the long run I would give this book a rating of five on a scale from one to five.

    4 out of 5 stars The Buccaneers.......2005-01-06

My book the Buccaneers is a very good book if you like adventures. It took place in London and out on in the ocean. I recommend this book to a teenager or older. If you like pirates you will love this book. When I started reading this I couldn't put it down at all. It makes you want to keep reading tell you finish it. There's a captain and his ship friends who try to sail across the sea until they found an island where there were some very nasty pirates who love to cook people alive.
