Book Description

"In a LAND of MORAL IMBECILES,I knew I could be KING."

He was one of the most prominent producers of fundraising events in the country, throwing monumental charity bashes, securing millions of dollars in donations for the sick and needy. The trouble was, some of the people profiting were greedy politicians, and many of the "charity cases" were really only pampered Hollywood stars.

3 out of 5 stars Imagine my surprise!.......2005-12-20

I had never heard of Aaron Tonken - I just bought this book because I like Hollywood scandal. Well! About halfway through the book, I did a Google search for him and imagine my surprise when the first 10 hits were news stories about Tonken's arrest and how it might affect Hillary Clinton!

Wha??? This got my attention because I have no love for Shrillary or her heinous husband and enjoy anything that takes a poke at them. So I scanned on ahead to get to the "meat" of the book - the part that was driving the FOBs nutty.

Tonken talks in the book about his Clinton fundraising efforts, but this by no means is the Clinton bash book the critics made it out to be. Shrill and Bill are mentioned along with many other famous names that cheated charity for their own personal gain. Sure, the Clintons are the most powerful of the bunch, but many celebrities, including the whole cast of "Friends", get a major drubbing as well.

As for the book itself, Tonken couldn't be more self-serving and pathetic. He gets taken for a ride over and over and over, yet is so star-struck that he keeps going back for more. He tries to pretend that he's some choirboy and didn't realize what he was doing was wrong - that he was all for the charities every step of the way. But we all know that's horsecrap. I've spearheaded a few charitable events myself and I can't believe it's that different in the big time.

So this book gets 3 stars - 2 for revealing petty Hollyweirds for the selfish greedy pigs they are, and 1 for good dirt. He loses 1 star for his pure ignorance and another for trying to pass himself off as a naive do-gooder who got taken.

3 out of 5 stars Readable for sure...but horrifying on a million levels!.......2005-08-01

This book definitely qualifies as compelling entertainment to those who find the "behind-the-scenes" behavior of celebs interesting, but I'm STUNNED at this guy's "moronitude." He doesn't let himself entirely off the hook in his misdealings, but he plays himself off as a victim..when his CONSTANT weakness in fulfilling the insane demands of certain nightmarish celebrities makes him contemptible beyond belief. I wanted to like Tonken - he tells a breezy story & is apparently paying the price for his participation in financial scams...but I didn't find much of a soul there. To get involved with Roseanne at the late date he did shows judgement that can't really be justified. I would have liked to hear more about the (perhaps few) GOOD Hollywood/Washington, D.C. people - he alludes to them from time to time but goes back to the same self-indulgent nonsense of the others. It's a good read but it left me with a bad taste in my mouth. Nothing he wrote was a true shock (except, as mentioned before, Ray Charles' alleged cavalier acts)...but as seen through the eyes of someone who clearly has NOT learned from his misdeeds, it didn't really satisfy.

5 out of 5 stars A page turning blast! A beach read or one nighter .......2005-07-02

There is something perverse about forgiving Aaron Tonken his stupidity because he dishes out honesty; after being pimped for so long by so many all cut from the same cloth.Birds of a feather do flock together pal! You just have to be sympathethic to the author because he really wasn't in it for the money- he wanted the approval of the glitteratti.Chapter after chapter he does the same thing, starting small and moving up the ladder. No matter the rung the story is always the same, ego driven behavior fuels monkey see monkey do greed and a sense of entitlement. This book is a riot, and so badly needed now that the last bastion of tabloids- the National Enquirer- has joined the star-pucker bandwagon and chooses to befriend the celebrities in the hope that something good will rub off on them- or that the favors will be returned.
Read the book though and note the genuine , compassionate and refined minority that Aaron does have dealings with , including The Reagans, Englebert Humperdink, Red Buttons,Charlton Heston, and some other less than household names. Have some fun and read the book-

1 out of 5 stars 1 word describes Aaron Tonken: L O S E R.......2005-04-05

This book gives a truly pathetic look into a man who chooses to be a perpetual victim. He supposedly lives this lavish lifestyle, yet has nothing to show for it. He's obviously not up front about all his financial gains from his swindeling. Nor do I recall him ever giving any amounts that were actually donated to these charities.
And poor Cynthia Gershman! He befriends her only to badmouth her & use her the entire time. Even after she becomes a widow, he discloses her private affairs to readers.
No, he's not a con. He's not smart enough to be! He got taken by the money sharks & was warmly welcomed by others, only to betray trusts.
The raw truth is, he couldn't hang! He was too greedy & wanted it all at any cost. THEN at the end, he has the audacity to mention the love of Jesus! What a hypocrite!
I only read this book because it was given to me as a gift & I felt obligated. The only people he conned were people into buying this piece of garbage.
I hope his cellmate's name is Bubba!

5 out of 5 stars the real hollywood and it's greed.......2005-03-05

this book is the closest expose of the greed that runs rampant with the most unlikely hollywood and political celebrities. it gives the reader an insight not seen before and absolutely dispels and exposes who and what these people are really about. they are not what the public see's or how they are hyped by the media in a positive vain but rather greedy heartless and completely insensitive to the charities they are supposedly helping. you will be amazed at the their insensitivity.

    Book Description

Official corruption has become increasingly prevalent around the world since the early 1990s. The situation appears to be particularly acute in the post-communist states. Corruption—be it real or perceived—is a major problem with concrete implications, including a lowered likelihood of foreign investment. In Rotten States? Leslie Holmes analyzes corruption in post-communist countries, paying particular attention to Bulgaria, Hungary, Poland, and Russia, as well as China, which Holmes argues has produced, through its recent economic liberalization, a system similar to post-communism. As he points out, these countries offer useful comparisons: they vary in terms of size, religious orientation, ethnic homogeneity, and their approaches to and economic success with the transition from communism.

Drawing on data including surveys commissioned especially for this study, Holmes examines the causes and consequences of official corruption as well as ways of combating it. He focuses particular attention on the timing of the recent increase in reports of corruption, the relationship between post-communism and corruption, and the interplay between corruption and the delegitimation and weakening of the state. Holmes argues that the global turn toward neoliberalism—with its focus on ends over means, flexibility, and a reduced role for the state—has generated much of the corruption in post-communist states. At the same time, he points out that neoliberalism is perhaps the single most powerful tool for overcoming the communist legacy, which is an even more significant cause of corruption. Among the conclusions that Holmes draws is that a strong democratic state is needed in the early stages of the transition from communism in order to prevent corruption from taking hold.

    Book Description

The 2000 presidential election meltdown and the more recent controversy about computer voting machines did not come out of the blue. Steal This Vote tells the fraught but very colorful history of electoral malfeasance in the United States. It is a tale of votes bought, stolen, suppressed, lost, cast more than once, assigned to dead people and pets, miscounted, thrown into rivers, and litigated all the way to the Supreme Court. (No wonder America has the lowest voter participation rate of any Western democracy!)

Andrew Gumbel—whose work on the new electronic voting fraud has been praised by Gore Vidal and Paul Krugman, and has won a Project Censored Award—shows that, for all the idealism about American democracy, free and fair elections have been the exception, not the rule. In fact, Gumbel suggests that Tammany Hall, shrouded as it is in moral odium, might have been a fairer system than we have today, because ostensibly positive developments like the secret ballot have been used to squash voting rights ever since.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars A much needed book, but not as great as it could be.......2007-06-03

Steal This Vote is a fascinating book whose interesting premise is unfortunately marred by a boring and choppy writing style. Gumbel's accusations, arguments and images are stirring and rather frightening; the fact that elections have been stolen for the last two hundred years isn't exactly encouraging to those supporting election reform. He paints a very clear picture of each point in election-stealing history, from the early days of the Republic to Chicago's Daley machine to the 2000 and 2004 debacles. Each shocking detail comes out fast and harsh, which is alarming (as it should be) for the first few chapters, but then soon becomes repetitive and tiring. That doesn't keep the whole story from enlightening the reader, however. Even if I struggled to get through this book, I learned the history of elections in this country and how they are taken for granted and are almost never clean. And though I am constantly distressed by the American population's election habits, Gumbel's suggestions for reform are reasonable goals for which I will fight to the end. With some more editing, perhaps a new edition of this book could be more easily read, and I think it should be read. This population is too ignorant of its system's workings; if the people knew that their perfect democracy is not so perfect, there would be hell to pay, and then there may at last be change.

5 out of 5 stars To cry, or to cry out? And about what?.......2006-04-08

The election travesties of 2000 and 2004 left me angry and disgusted. I'm still angry and disgusted about those events and their conduct, but after reading Gumbel's book, I've softened my impressions a bit and redirected the focus of my ire and disgust. It's clear to me now that no American political party has ever seriously objected to election theft as long as the result was victory. Since achieving honest elections has never been an honest goal (except temporarily for the losers), a party in power has never had genuine interest in realizing honest results! So, here we are.
I shouldn't be surprised at all that, but Gumbel's detail, clarity and focus make me wonder why I'm so late coming to the full realization table.
Gumbel provides clear insight. Nevertheless, the reader is left to judge for himself what all this says about the alleged state of democracy in the U.S.A., past and present.

5 out of 5 stars Reform long overdue?.......2006-03-06

One would have thought that of all the boring topics that an author could select, the mechanics and history of the secret ballot in the world's pre-eminent democracy should have been close to the top. But far from it, Mr Gumbel has documented and told a quite extraordinary and at times amazing tale. Whether he is right in every detail I have no idea but either way it ought to have every US citizen asking some very tough questions. Politics can be a venal game but surely the actual electoral process itself ought to be above question. Sadly it seems in the USA it's not.

    5 out of 5 stars A fascinating historical survey.......2005-12-30

Gumbel has run over the history of American electoral fraud, starting as early as 1788 and running through extensive discussions of the 2000 and 2004 elections.

On the way we learn about a number of fascinating scandals of the past, now largely forgotten, along with some that haven't been, such as the famous Tammany Hall gang that dominated New York City for a decade. Gumbel shows that, while big-city corruption got the publicity, elections in many rural areas were equally dirty. He also show how periodic concerns over ballot box stuffing have resulted in a numbr of reforms that, by making voting harder, have effectively lowered participation, which was once at around 80% of eligible voters, and now is sometimes below 50%. For instance, the secret ballot, by replacing earlier party-distributed ballots that had shown, by color and logos, which party they represented, had the quite intentional effect of disenfranchising many illiterate immigrants and former slaves. The practice of denying the vote to convicted felons even after completion of their sentence was invented entirely to prevent former slaves from voting, and is used to disenfranchise blacks to this day, as notably happened in Florida 2000.

Gumbel's discussion of the Florida crisis is useful, although I thought a little too hard on Gore. His discussion of Ohio 2004, which he feels was clearly a legitimate victory, although he does show the strong evidence of illegitimate means used to suppress the Kerry vote, is obviously unconvincing for many of his readers here. (It's interesting to note that, although the book really works not to be a partisan tract, the reviewers on Amazon seem to be overwhelmingly Democrats.)

The extensive discussion in this book of touch screen voting shows clearly how flawed the technology is in current form. He also adds a fascinating historical perspective by showing how past changes, earlier voting machines and punch card ballots, were promoted in their time as technological wonders which would eliminate corruption and make voting easier.

One thing that is very convincing indeed in this section is the discussion of how professional election administrators have repeatedly ignored, downplayed, or just flat lied about the flaws in technology they have committed taxpayer money to, both with e-voting and with previous technologies. I used to think that the professionals who explained how my fears of touch screen voting were groundless probably knew what they were talking about, since they worked with the systems so closely. I won't ever trust those quotes again after reading this book.

Gumbel's discussion of touch screen voting in other countries is also interesting, both for how he shows that such advanced nations as Venezuela do far better than the US at holding clean and reliable elections, as well as some anecdotes showing that American voting equipment companies have just as doubtful a record overseas as they do at home. This section will give you the mild relief of knowing that the way they're screwing up our elections is (probably) more a matter of corporate greed and incompetence than a deep conspiracy to install permanent right-wing government by fixing elections.

5 out of 5 stars Flat out Best Book on this subject.......2005-11-26

I was really impressed with this book. This is an incredibly important topic, and the author is so immensely knowledgeable, and his handling of the material is so comprehensive and fair, that by the end, I felt closer to grasping what's been going on with American politics than ever before. It turned my perception of the whole voting process in America completely around (I really never suspected it was THIS bad). If you have any interest at all in politics (and if you don't, well, you might be past saving), you should read this, and pass it along, and talk about it. It's an eye-opener. And so entertaining! I laughed out loud several times, and throughout, I felt that the author was presenting really substantial, weighty information in an appealing, witty style. (It's a fun book to cart around, too -- about 15 people stopped me and asked me about the book after glimpsing the title.)

15 all-new tales of family Skeletons to make your most "evil" relatives look good

Fifteen all-new tales by top authors told from the viewpoint of those "evil" relatives from classic fantasy and fiction. From Grendel to Santa Claus' son to Cinderella's stepmother to Hamlet's uncle and more-these wonderfully provocative tales prove there is more than one side to any story.

    Customer Reviews:

    4 out of 5 stars they're all cute.......2006-09-25

All these Little/Greenberg anthologies are light and fun, with a huge variety of fantasy stories. If you like short works, pick it up!

4 out of 5 stars Seeing it from the other side..........2005-12-03

Have you ever wondered about the other side of the story? You know, things from the point of view of the evil stepsister, or Hamlet's uncle, or Grendel? That's what the 15 short stories in this book are all about.

The stories are, on the whole, good. There are a few true gems - King of Shreds and Patches and With A Face Only a Mother Could Love, but the rest aren't slouches either. It's mildly predictable at times, but a very entertaining read nonetheless.

4 out of 5 stars Everyone has that ONE relative...........2005-05-31

Everyone has that one relative they can't stand. This anthology is based on the premise of those relatives of literary characters we know and love. Many of the stories are written from the perspective of the relatives in fairly tales that are `the bad guy'. Most of these were especially entertaining.

A full list of the stories includes....

*** Home for the Holidays by Pauline Alma
*** With a Face Only a Mother Could Love by Jenn Reese
*** Switched by Nina Kiriki Hoffman
*** The Trick of the Tricksters Tricked by Josepha Sherman
*** Thrice Told by Von Jocks
    *** Dynasty by Bill McCray
*** Serpent's Tooth by Susan and Bradley Sinor
*** Mirror, Mirror by Jacey Bedford
*** After the Ball by Pamela Luzier
*** Peggy Plain by Devon Monk
*** Heathcliff's Notes by David Bischoff
*** Cuckoo's Egg by Jody Lynn Nye
*** Rapunzel- The True Story by Robert Sheckley
*** Among the Stars by Susan Sizemore
*** King of Shreds and Patches by P.N. Elrod

I found many of these stories to be original and entertaining. "Peggy Plain" by Devon Monk was especially entertaining with it's crime noir style superimposed on the world of nursery rhymes. " King of Shreds and Patches" by P.N. Elrord was another stand out tale, this set from the perspective of Claudius in Hamlet.

The complaint I had about the collection was too many of the stories overlapped. For instance, Cinderella's tale receives several different treatments. With the vast scope of literary characters out there, I wish Denise Little would have encouraged the writers to broaden their scopes.

Still, this is another highly entertaining, solid anthology by DAW.

4 out of 5 stars Classic Tales from Unclasic Angles.......2004-12-22

Fifteen original tales that take familiar stories and stand them on end. Most of the stories are fairy tales although there are also nursery rhymes and some classic literature.

Read no fewer than three different accounts of what really happens in Cinderella. Rapunzel and sleeping beauty also get their chance at a rewrite. Heathcliff and Cathy find new work after their story has been told. The collection is topped off with a new take on Hamlet that makes far more sense than the original.

As with any collection like this, stories vary greatly in subject, style and quality. But if you enjoy stories told from the so-called villain's viewpoint, then there are probably a few tales here that will tickle your fancy.

Collection contributors are: Pauline J. Alama, Jenn Reese, Nina Kiriki Hoffman, Josepha Sherman, Von Jocks, Bill McCay, Susan P. & Bradley H. Sinor, Jacey Bedford, Pamela Luzier, Devon Monk, David Bischoff, Jody Lynn Nye, Robert Sheckley, Susan Sizemore, and P. N. Elrod.

5 out of 5 stars BRILLIANT! There's SO much good to be said about this book..........2007-01-07

If you wanted to know really what is going on in the EC, this is the book to read. It will give you insights into the political systems, which influences the monetary system, trading and the agenda they are following. Not to mention their bullying of countries to get their way.

When was the last time in a civilized, DEMOCRATIC society have we seen free speech outlawed? How about now. Now in the EU it is against the lau to express you opinion, your criticism, of what the political beast is doing. That means you cannot speak out against wrong doings of institutions and political figures.

That ruling alone did away with British common Law and over 50 years of european civil liberties. Where will it end? A totalitarian regime?

Some say THAT is just around the corner.

The author of this book got into HOT water for writing it. I hope this is not something that will foreshadow this type of activity happening here.

This book is a wake up call. If it is happening in the EU, what kind of ramifications will fall on us?

I have bought this as a present for friends interested in monetary policy and international affairs. I shudder to think of the impact the EU will have with a weakened US international policy. I can only envision them as growing threat to us economically and shudder to think of how a potentially fascist EU.

      Buy this book.

5 out of 5 stars Superb demolition of the EU.......2001-05-15

Review of The Rotten Heart of Europe: the dirty war for Europe's money, by Bernard Connolly, Faber & Faber, 1995, £17.50.

THIS BRILLIANT book is a devastating exposure of the pretensions of those who want to rule Europe. It shows that the attempts to achieve monetary and economic union, and consequently political union, are bad for us. They will not bring monetary stability, economic growth or political harmony. Instead they will destabilise currencies, reduce growth and promote hatred between the nations of Europe.

Economic and Monetary Union (EMU) is supposed to build on the experience of the Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM). Britain's membership of the ERM forced us into a disastrous and quite unnecessary recession. After two years of suffering, Major said in July 1992 that Britain would soon be the leader of the ERM. Two months later, we were well out of it, and ERM had bermbed, as Jacques Clouseau, Major's mentor, would say.

ERM constrained British Government policy on non-monetary matters too. The Government appeased Spain over the fishing dispute to keep Spain happy about the sterling/peseta rate. So the Common Fisheries Policy, so damaging to Britain's fishing industry, is not an isolated EU aberration: it stems from the whole logic of economic and monetary union.

The ERM was described as the Eternal Recession Mechanism; EMU is likely to be Even More Useless. The ERM kept the poor countries poor; it did not help them to converge; it certainly did not help them to meet the Maastricht criteria. Spain's experience of ERM was catastrophic: 22% unemployed. The ERM forced Denmark into recession: unemployment doubled to 12%, the budget was slashed, and investment, output and wages all fell. In the ERM, Ireland's unemployment soared from 11% to 23%. ERM subordinated nations' economic interests to minorities' foreign policy goals: ruling class interests dominated working class interests. Some still claim that ERM and EMU could control capital, but actually they were and are attacks on the working class.

A 1992 report by the Monetary Committee, which advises the EU's Council of Ministers, admitted that ERM did not stabilise prices or money and did not reduce inflation. Perhaps it was after all just a tool for moving countries towards political union.

The book also depicts the present dangerous struggle between the French and German ruling classes for control over the proposed institutions of a single European state. Germany is determined to keep the Deutschmark and the Bundesbank: it wants EMU so that it can assimilate other countries into an expanded Deutschmark zone. France wants a new currency and wants to get its hands on the Bundesbank; it pushed for the Maastricht Treaty, which would destroy the Deutschmark. Who would control Europe's currency? Who would control the proposed new European Central Bank? Germany or France?

As Wilhelm Nolling, a Bundesbank Council member, said: "We should be under no illusion - the present controversy over the new European monetary order is about power, influence and the pursuit of national interests."

They are already fighting about the 1996 InterGovernmental Conference. Germany wants the economic criteria for EMU met as soon as possible: it insists that economic convergence must precede monetary union. France wants the earliest possible date for monetary union, believing that monetary union would produce economic convergence. Both are wrong of course: convergence cannot and will not be achieved, either way.

EMU's implications are universally unpopular. The workers of France, Italy and Belgium are striking against the EU's schemes. The Austrian Government fell in October, unable to pass the EU-required budget.

We can see both from ERM's effects, and from the effects of the attempted imposition of the Maastricht criteria, how damaging membership of EMU would be. It would cause, as intended, a permanent lowering of wages, a permanently higher level of unemployment, and massive cuts in public spending.

Connolly sums up: "My central thesis is that the ERM and EMU are not only inefficient but also undemocratic: a danger not only to our wealth but to our freedoms and ultimately, our peace. The villains of the story - some more culpable than others - are bureaucrats and self-aggrandizing politicians. The ERM is a mechanism for subordinating the economic welfare, democratic rights and national freedom of citizens of the European countries to the will of political and bureaucratic elites whose power-lust, cynicism and delusions underlie the actions of the vast majority of those who now strive to create a European superstate. The ERM has been their chosen instrument, and they have used it cleverly."

      5 out of 5 stars Overwhelming.......2000-10-23

Bernard Connolly was fired by the European bureaucrats after this book came out. If you read this book you will understand why. This book has all the detail you could ask for. It is an incredible expose of the events leding up to European Monetary Union.

If you support the European Community, reading this book will change your mind -- if you dare read it.

      5 out of 5 stars Excellent.......1999-03-22

Excellent work. The reality at the core of all the pomp-and-circumstance surrounding EMU. Read it and be wiser.

5 out of 5 stars the best work written on the process of monetary integration.......1998-05-12

Bernard Connelly has written the consummate "expose" on the Maastricht treaty and the process of European monetary integration. Connelly, a former member of the European Commission, blows the lid off the Maastricht treaty and the intransigence of Jaques Delors and the Kohl-Mitterand relationship, which led to the European Monetary Union (EMU) provisions in Maastricht. This is at heart story of the politics of monetary policy, especially the failed Exchange Rate Mechanism (ERM), with three primary themes: the primacy of politics in determining monteray policy, the role of "vision" and "ideology" in determining policy, and the comedy of errors which was the ERM. One should not let the economics of this book prevent them from reading it. At heart, this is a great story and has the intrigue of the best historical novel. Connelly has written a factual tale containing a heroine (Baroness Thatcher), villians (Delors, Kohl, Trichet, Mitterand, Tietmeyer), and Alphandery, the innocent whistle-blower who brings the ERM crashing down. Connelly provides any reader interested in knowing about the lunacy of European monetary integration just why this idea is flawed, and provides economic evidence to defend his primary arguments. Among the more important and convincing conclusions reached in this work are: the necessity of flexible exchange rates, the inherent negatives of Europhilism (and especially Franco-philism, since "Europe" is seen as way to prevent the rise of "Anglo-Saxon" institutions), and the belief in free, competitive markets. A final comment one feels obligated to make about this book is its timeliness, and his villification of France, which is supported by following the recent row over the control of the European Central Bank. If one wants to read one book on why the EMU was really founded, and why it won't work-this is the book.

          Book Description

Sperlich examines the ideological foundations of the socialist regime of the former German Democratic Republic. He provides a detailed analysis of the nature of the GDR's legitimating ideology and of the reasons why the ideology ultimately failed to legitimate the regime. The study uses primary source documents extensively as well as the little existing secondary literature. This is part of Sperlich's larger project dealing with the government, society, economy, political participation, and administration of the law and the system of courts of the GDR. This definitive treatment of the GDR provides the background essential to an understanding of all communist systems of the twentieth century. As such, it is vital reading for scholars, students, and other researchers seeking to understand the rise and ultimate collapse of communist systems and, in particular, the decline of the German Democratic Republic.

From the supplier: Danida's proposed permanent hazardous waste station for the incineration of obsolete pesticide products in Mozambique has received worldwide condemnation from environmental groups as an ill-conceived plan that endangers public health in one of the world's poorest nations. The Danish aid agency's proposed cement kiln hazardous waste incineration project has been criticized as one of the top sources of dioxins, a persistent organic pollutant.
