From the very first letter of the alphabet that my eyes looked upon inside this series of books, until the very last period of the very last sentence, I was hooked. Each one of these books absorbed my attention like no other book has ever done in my life. Biblically sound, theatrically entertaining, and brilliantly written, the Left Behind books will inspire you to dig into God's word and take the pieces of news from your T.V. screen and match them right smack-dab up with the prophecies of the Bible. Your hair will stand up, your heart will race, and you will find yourself helplessly caught in the suspense. Once you finish one of these books, you will desperately race to your computer screen or your local library to pick up the next one!

4 out of 5 stars Kingdom Come - worth reading.......2007-09-11

I enjoyed this book. I read the entire series over the past few months, and this was the way to end it. It's more of a bible study than the other books in the series. Not as exciting, but if you read the story up until now, you should read this. Gives a good description of the last days.

1 out of 5 stars Potter is Hotter!.......2007-08-29

As a work of fantasy, the Left Behind series is third-rate. It lacks the humor and exuberance of the Harry Potter books; the magical acts it portrays are quite simply boring. It lacks the sparkling darkness of language that makes the His Dark Materials books a delight to read. It lacks the sweep and grandeur of the Lord of the Rings series. Note please that I'm reviewing Left Behind merely as escapist fantasy literature. As theology, it's too contemptible to need reviewing. As a morality tale, it's even more contemptible, an interminable drone of bigotry, sexism, self-righteousness, and exploitation of the decent folk who congregate in America's churches.

The entire series was written in such a way that every new book had its own plot. A series well done. Thank you for the eye opener.

Book Description

The epic tale of an ancient, unsolved puzzle and how it relates to all scientific attempts to explain the basic structure of the universe

At the dawn of science the ancient Greek philosopher Zeno formulated his paradox of motion, and amazingly, it is still on the cutting edge of all investigations into the fabric of reality.

Zeno used logic to argue that motion is impossible, and at the heart of his maddening puzzle is the nature of space and time. Is space-time continuous or broken up like a string of beads? Over the past two millennia, many of our greatest minds—including Aristotle, Galileo, Newton, Einstein, Stephen Hawking, and other current theoreticians—have been gripped by the mystery this puzzle represents.

Joseph Mazur, acclaimed author of Euclid in the Rainforest, shows how historic breakthroughs in our understanding of motion shed light on Zeno's paradox. The orbits of the planets were explained, the laws of motion were revealed, the theory of relativity was discovered—but the basic structure of time and space remained elusive.

In the tradition of Fermat's Enigma and Zero, The Motion Paradox is a lively history of this apparently simple puzzle whose solution—if indeed it can be solved—will reveal nothing less than the fundamental nature of reality.

5 out of 5 stars Metaphysics of Being.......2007-08-31

The motion paradox is one of the most important books that you could ever read. After 2500 years of scientific development we still can not understand or quantify an indivisible moment in time. Mathematics tells us that a finite set encloses an infinite series and this creates one of the greatest paradoxes ever conceived of by man.

[...].

4 out of 5 stars Why the Universe is Exceedingly Strange.......2007-08-30

Modern physics often reads like the ravings of a deluded crank, yet much of the paradox and counter-intuitive ramblings seems to be the way the universe works. For example while string theory is mind-bogglingly bizarre, one is drawn to the conclusion that it, or something akin to it, is probably true at some ultra-micro level.

"The Motion Paradox" discusses many of these issues, based on the Greek philosopher Zeno's ideas of 2500 years ago. Now the Achilles and the tortoise paradox has been simply solved with modern algebra, but the other paradoxes, although seemingly silly, are not so easily solved. As Joseph Mazur points out in this book, they are not quite as silly on close examination as one would suppose. Why does an arrow appear to have a smooth motion? Why do some calculations approach a limit, like Achilles approaching the tortoise, yet never seem to reach it? In fact as the matter-energy, motion-rest, time-space, microscopic-macroscopic and other paired concepts about our universe are examined closely, the solid world around us seems to disappear leaving us with a very Hindu or Buddhist sounding concept that all is illusion!

This is a very interesting book from a number of standpoints. I dropped it a star because there are parts that I think could have been more clearly written, but overall the author got most of his points across. The upshot is that we live in a very strange planet in a very strange universe and we may never really grasp exactly how very strange this "reality" really is!

2 out of 5 stars unsatisfying.......2007-08-20

I had high hopes for this book, but I feel like the author has let me down.

My principal complaint with the book is akin to the complaint about the three statisticians who go hunting- one shoots high, the other shoots low, and the third yells "we got it!" Mazur looks at the world through a mathematicians eyes, and misses the forest for the trees. He is attempting to summarize his thoughts on the physical ramifications for the philosophy and math behind Zeno's paradox, completely ignoring the fact that one can pit Achilles and the tortoise in a race and observe Achilles' win. Were he to attempt to focus on this goal, even if he had to do so ironically by halves, he would have a better chance of leaving solid concepts in the reader's mind. Rather, he fills the reader with a hocus-pocus level of wonder, marveling at the impossibility of motion and it all. One can open their eyes, and, like a child, exclaim, "yet it moves!", and not be mystified at all. Is Mazur trying to make the reader feel inferior?

For example, he spends a certain amount of time at the end of the book marveling at the persistance of vision, wondering if our eyesight averages discrete images into a false perception of continuous motion, what if our vision were that of a strobe camera and the universe were continuous, would our vision be different? This is interesting, and the sense of wonder seems genuine; but there is a physical explanation for the persistance of vision, in that eyesight is a chemical phenomemon and as the chemical reactions become saturated, there is a natural decay required before a new image might render fully. Indeed, he completely ignores wondering about two images (such as the bird and the cage) when flipped at high speed, seem to merge into one bird in a cage. He is restricted into a highly constructed narrative, saying, "follow me along this path", to his conclusion, ignoring that the educated reader is constatly going to say "but... what about..", and be left either lost and frustrated, or dumbly following as if in a boring guided tour. Either way, the reader will not feel better about themselves at the end of the tour.

More troublingly, there are extensive unmentioned mathmatical insights that he completely overlooks, when as a mathematician, he should be at least mentioning them. For example, Hilbert's Grand Hotel paradox seems worth at least a brief mention as belonging in the same class, and yet despite three references to David Hilbert in the index, no hint is given. If Zeno's paradoxes are the root puzzle, as the cover suggests, of "all the mysteries of time and space"- then why does he not spend more time giving concrete examples of how that is? Clearly, Zeno's paradox seems to be at the root of calculus, which is extremely relevant for mathematics, but he fails to convey sufficiently how and what that means for real world problems. That there is and has always been a deep divide between pure applied math, and practically applied science, is glossed over. If he is saying, "math is the root of all science", he does not bravely say so. Many people can do science without math, and as such the physical scientist in me is unimpressed with his tack.

More minor peccadilloes: This book was not carefully edited, and the hardcover edition contains many typos, sometimes distractingly so. It is also useless as a reference book. The style and subject matter does not leave the reader more educated- rather it is written in a mystical style which doesn't clearly open or close its subjects, and smacks of a Whig history of Zeno's paradox. When you separate out his whiggish narration, you quickly begin to realize that this book isn't really saying anything. He leaves you not much more significantly educated than many putative purchasers of this book, and as such, you'd be better off saving the money. If it's not educating, it should be entertaining, but he fails on this as well. It does not have well drawn characters, and except for the first few pages, we get no sense of struggle or personality. In fact, reading the first few pages as an excerpt clearly leaves you feeling like it's going to be a more interesting book- for example, how has Zeno's paradox been a personal struggle for the author? But instead, it falls flat. It is a dry retelling of history, and I feel cheated by having wasted my time reading it.

5 out of 5 stars Fascinating and thought-provoking!.......2007-07-26

The Motion Paradox is a fascinating mix of science, math, and philosophy that draws the reader deeper and deeper into one of the most interesting puzzles of all time. Mazur's prose is joyfully thought-provoking and is not distracted by unnecessary mathematical equations. I thoroughly enjoyed this book -- Mazur's best to date!

3 out of 5 stars Excellent but for mathematically oriented reader a little bit frustrating.......2007-07-19

This is an excellent account of the development of the ideas around an intriguing question (zeno's paradox) through two and a half millenia of the history of mathematics and physics. In fact this paradox is ultimately related to the problem of the link between discrete and continuous in the linear number system (real line). If one digs deep enough, one can find also links to famous paradoxes of twentieth century mathematics (for example the banach-tarsky paradox or the paradox of the "pea and the sun"). Unfortunately the author overlooks these issues which have caused virulent debates between best mathematicians of the history (supporters of cantor's ideas against his adversaries). The author follows scupulously the maxim that every mathematical formula divides by two the number of peaple who will read the book, so he forbids himself of introducing any formula. I think in many places, mathematical formulation is much clearer than a long text (it could at least be presented as notes).

Book Description

Tim LaHaye contends that his bestselling Left Behind series (with Jerry Jenkins) is "the first fictional portrayal of prophetic events that are true to the literal interpretation of Bible prophecy." Gary DeMar takes issue with this bold claim, contending that the theological premise the series is based upon is only one interpretation of the book of Revelation.

DeMar examines the series in four distinct sections: The Left Behind Sensation; Putting Tim LaHaye's Literalism to the Test; the Theology Behind Left Behind; and What Does it Mean and What Does it Matter? Readers will learn to develop a simple method of Bible interpretation and to assess the impact of Left Behind on the future of the church and our society.

3 out of 5 stars Hey folks. It's already happened...........2007-09-01

While _Left Behind_ and similar books have us Christians waiting for a "Rapture" to take us away before the Tribulation, Gary Demar's _End Times Fiction_ makes the point that the events referenced in Revelation, Daniel, etc. refer to the events in Jerusalem around 70 A.D.

Demar does use plenty of Bible references in his book to make his point, and it would be useful to have a Bible at hand to read along. (Having more or less grown up with the idea of either a pre- or post-trib Rapture, this particular viewpoint is a bit novel to me....)

Demar does leave the reader hanging somewhat, as to what will actually happen at the "end of the world" (pp. 213-214).

4 out of 5 stars Essential End Times Reading.......2006-12-12

There are, and have been, a multitude of Christian interpretations of the "end times" propehcies found in Revelation, Daniel, Ezekiel, the gopsels, etc. Throughout church history, good Christians have disagreed over what the prophetic symbols and language in these books represent. The pre-millenial dispensationalism synthesized from other ideas by John Darby a couple of centuries ago has easily come to dominate popular end times thought among conservative North American Christians. Why has it proven so strong? I would venture to say that its main strength is that while nineteenth century liberal Protestantism was consciously and explicitly jury rigging an amillenial eschatology to fit the spirit of nineteenth century scientific progressivism, Darby and his disciples, like Scofield and Ryrie, were claiming to have produced an end times theology that was Biblically sound, because it was Biblically literal, through and through. In our own day, publishing giants Tim LaHaye and Hal Lindsey continue to claim that their "Late Great Planet Earth" and "Left Behind" eschatology is the intrepretation of prophecy that is true to literal scriptural intrepretation where possible, and true to common sense always.

Gary DeMar's thesis is straightforward: LaHaye, Lindsey, et al. derive their pre-millenial eschatology from scripture only by repeatedly violating their own standards of literal and common sense Biblical interptretation. DeMar drives this point home again and again as he targets pretty much all of the major points of the "Left Behind" eschatology: the rise of the "new Roman Empire" in the EU/UN, the rise of the antichrist, the rapture, the rebuilding of the temple, the "mark of the beast", the seven years tribulation, and more. DeMar's analysis of "Left Behind" eschatology is Biblically informed, intelligent, comprehensive, and, though he could be a bit nicer at times, ultimately fair.

I myself had come to see a few years back that the "Left Behind" eschatology was simply missing the Biblical literalism it preached. But DeMar still had some surprises for me. For instance, the book of Revelation never mentions a seven year time period. And if we interpret the letters to the seven churches as a script for the ensuing history of the church, we have to give up what LaHaye calls the "any moment theory" of the rapture: Any Christian who realized that these letters represented a history of the church would know that the rapture couldn't come until the history had completed itself!

In short, alot of good people out there believe that "Left Behind" eschatology is built on a literal or common sense interpretation of Biblical prophecy. Sadly, it just isn't. And if you haven't read this book, you probably don't understand "Left Behind."

I can't give this book five stars because, first, most of the "Left Behind" believers and proponents are basically good people, trying to follow the Lord as bestt they can, bumps, bruises, and all, just like anyone esle who calls themselves Christian. They think they are being true to the Bible even if they aren't. And DeMar would have better served his readers by taking a more genial tone in some of his comments. DeMar's book falls short of five stars, secondly, because after trying to pull the Biblical rug out from under the feet of "Left Behind" he espouses a preterist (or, more precisely, partial preterist) view of Biblical prophecy that raises major problems itself. (Can we really believe Paul was just talking about the destruction of the Jerusalem temple in his letters to the Thessalonions?) In the eyes of some reviewers, this largely invalidates DeMar's contribution. But I disagree. We can all hope that he or someone will have a convincing eschatology to take the place of the "Left Behind" variety that he argues against. But the issue today is that too many Christians believe, and *believe that they have to believe*, the "Left Behind" eschatology. And if DeMar can free us from "Left Behind", we can explore other alternatives ourselves. So I think that what DeMar has accomplished here is contribution enough.

To sum up: DemMar's own preterist views need more defending than he himself has marshalled in this book, but he has done North American conservative Protestantism a great service in showing that "Left Behind" eschatology is not the product of literal or common sense Biblical interpetation, and that we are free to dispense with it and seek the Biblical truth elsewhere.

5 out of 5 stars Don't be left behind.......2006-08-15

This book is a perfectly written explanation of why all the Christians that believe in the End Times theology of the rapture and AntiChrist etc. are simply wrong. There is no historical precedent in Christian history to believe the Left Behind Theology. It is just bad scholarship to cut and paste the books of Daniel, Isaiah, the Gospels, and Revelation into Tim Lahayes own personal eschatology. Please read this book with an open mind and spirit to understand the true context of of the writers of the bible.

Some facts of the matter is that Nero was the Antichrist his name in Greek equaled 666, the author of revelation was writing about current events.(In the Greek language there were no arabic numbers so letters equaled numbers).

The prophesies that are so often quoted as the AntiChrist was really the history of Antiochus IV when he ransacked the temple before the book of Daniel was written.

Buy the book for some much needed educated truth.

4 out of 5 stars Note the folks that don't like this book.......2006-07-15

Is simply because they are rapture believers, and just can't stand that some biblical scholars have a different theology then they do, and can defend it. God is not an author of confusion, and the points made in this book are not hard to comprehend. When Jesus said "This generation will not pass.." He MEANT the people he was talking to, not people 2000 years (or more) in the future. In fact, it's the dispensationalist that must find a way to make it mean 2000 years ahead. Square peg..meet round hole. Nearly all the points are about that simple. Can't find a 7 year tribulation in the Bible? Good, because it's not there. To show his understanding, DeMar even tells you how LaHaye and others came up with this nonsense, and then slices it apart. As Demar notes in his forward, this book is not a personal attack on LaHaye, however, I feel most dipensationalist, due to their pride, and belief that know more about the Bible then everyone else will take it that way, the reviews they give to any book that disagress with them backs my point fully. I may even reccomend Left Behind enthusiast don't read this book, I don't think they can read it fairly, and won't be able to handle it. That's why I'm not giving it 5 stars, it isn't good for the people that really need to read it. Of course, that's really not DeMar's fault.

1 out of 5 stars As biblical as DaVinci Code is historical..........2006-06-10

Just reading the assertions made in this book shows me that the author hasn't a grasp on what is means to interpret biblical prophecy. Rather than trying to refute the obvious failings of this book, I'd recomment that if the author wants to write fiction, perhaps he should take a lesson from Dan Brown and come up with some really strange ideas that no one in their right mind would believe if they were to actually do their own research.

Book Description

Author David Currie grew up conviced that one day all true Christians will suddenly be snatched up to heaven. The unfortunate souls left behind by this "rapture" will endure seven horrible years of tribulation, at the end of which Christ will return to earth for a glorious thousand-year reign.

Today, millions accept this end-times theology, assuming — as Currie did — that the Bible clearly teaches it. Many plan their lives around it. But, after studying Scripturefor decades, Currie has come to see that accepting the Bible means rejecting the rapture.

In this remarkable book — the world's most careful and thorough scriptural study of the rapture — Currie demonstrates why. He considers all the relevant verses ( there are hundreds!) and examines them in the light of ancient history, the writings of the earliest Christians, and the claims of the rapturist theologians. With painstaking thoroughness, he unlocks the meaings of key biblical prophecies that culminate in Christ's Messianic Kingdom— including those verses in Daniel, Matthew, and Revelation that rapturists turn to most.

Marshaling evidence as startling as it is compelling, Currie argues that these prophecies of war and tribulation don't point to some still-unrealized apocalyptic future. Rather, most of them were fulfilled long ago: the spiritual, priestly Kingdom prefigured in the Old Testament was inaugurated on Calvary, consumated in 70 A.D. with the destruction of the Temple, and continues to exist today...the Catholic Church!

That surprise you. Yet, as Currie shows, it's the only conclusion that fits all the scriptural and historical evidence.

Rapture: The End-Times Error that Leaves the Bible Behind makes Scripture, prophecy, and history come alive; and it demonstrates that if you open your Bible, you'll find that God's plan for the future of the world is not filled with darkness and disaster, but with light, mercy, and hope.

5 out of 5 stars Better grasp of biblical interpretation.......2007-09-16

This is a long book, and as detailed as it gets, into the problem of the end times. No matter what your take on that subject, this book will answer many of your questions. Certainly it gives a thorough background into the way the early Christians interpreted the end times.

The gist of Currie's argument centers around what happened in 70 AD, which is frequently overlooked by other interpretations.

Jesus, in the Olivet discourse, very clearly promised that "this generation" (Matt 24) would not pass away before they had seen many signs and events. C S Lewis called the Olivet discourse, "'certainly the most embarrassing verse in the bible'" (p148).

Unless you take Jesus at his word. Then, as Currie painstakingly explains, those words are full filled when the Romans, in 70 AD, burned the temple to the grounds. This was exactly the way that Origen, Clement of Alexandria, and Eusebius interpreted his words.

The history and background of biblical interpretation are worth the price of the book.

3 out of 5 stars Yes and No.......2007-05-02

It is necessary to take a leap of faith to in order to fully accept Christian doctrine.

There has always been within Christendom that group which does (take a leap of fatih) and that group (Apologists) that do not. This is NOT a Catholic v Protestant division.

This book is written from the Apologist point of view. I give it a three star rating for the research but do accept its conclusions. However it does contain some valid criticisms.

Evangelicals fall into error when their faith becomes presumption.

Regarding end times eschatology - no time table should calculated (and the instruction not to do this appears in Scripture) - that is the error -the mistake that many Evangelicals make.

It is not an error to believe by faith in the Second Coming of Jesus Christ.

For decades Christian Apologists taught that the prophesized rebirth of Israel was intended as a spiritual metaphor nothing more.

Well we all know what happened in 1948.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic.......2007-01-31

Absolutely fantastic - best book on end times I've read, and I've read a lot.

3 out of 5 stars Read "Whose Right It Is" also.......2007-01-20

Any book that dispels the absolute foolishness of the "Rapture Theory" has to have some merits. I do not follow theories. I seek the truth that only the Spirit of God can reveal and confirm. You should read the book "Whose Right It Is" by Dr. Kelley Varner for a greater spiritual insight into these matters. He takes head on every argument the tribbers have. The prophecies of Daniel that are incorrectly used to support the "Rapture Theory" are clearly expounded on in his book. All of the writings of Paul that have been abused by those who preach the rapture are dealt with by Dr. Varner to reveal their true spiritual implications and the context in which they were given.

True spiritual growth is beyond the intellect. Those who truly seek to worship Jesus in spirit and truth will be led to the truth of the Word. The truth concerning God's purpose in the earth is repeated throughout the word. Just read Psalms 37. Search on the words "righteous", "righteousness", "wicked", "wickedness" and similar words in the book of Proverbs and you will see that God's purpose is to remove all wickedness and leave behind his righteousness. So I hope to God I am left behind. Isaiah 45:18 states "...God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, he created it not in vain, he formed it to be inhabited..." By preaching a physical "taking away" we are actually speaking against the very purposes of God. Jesus spoke in his model prayer to the disciples, "in earth as it is in heaven". Not to mention "the meek shall inherit the earth."

Once again, I highly recommend "Whose Right It Is" by Dr. Kelley Varner.

4 out of 5 stars Rapture! - finally a book that dispells the myth.......2007-01-04

What a great read. It really lays out the scripture and it is tough to adhere to these phony baloney rapture claims. Good link with Daniel and the Olivet discourse in the Gospels to the book of Revelation. It is a bit slow and repetetive in the early chapters but it picks up a bit when you get to the destruction of biblical Isreal by the Romans (Europeans picking on the Jews? Who ever heard of such a thing).

So read and enjoy. Otherwise, stock up your supplies for 7 years of tribulations.

Leave no urban myth untested.

2 out of 5 stars Don't bother if you watch the show on TV.......2007-01-08

If you don't watch TV, then you might find this book vaguely interesting.
But I got this for an XMAS gift and I watch the show on TV. I found this book to be redundant at best.

Other than a bit of background info on the hosts and the producer, there is absolutely nothing in this book that you won't find on the TV shows.

All the info they cover is just a re-hash of each episode from the TV show, and given the choice, the TV show version is much much better than a print version that literally has low-resolution "screenshots" from the episodes to illustrate.

I was also surprised to find the last 11 pages of the book Absolutely Blank!
This was not a mis-print, it was probably cheaper to print the book with those pages left blank than to physically leave them out. The authors could not get enough information to fill in the blank sections?

The book seems to be a rush-job that just capitalizes on the popularity of the TV show.
The TV series this book is based on illustrates everything in the book MUCH clearer than the book itself.

Given the option, buy or rent the DVDs of the TV series and forget about this book.

5 out of 5 stars A well-done book based on a great show!.......2007-01-04

I've only caught MythBusters a few times on tv, but enjoy it enough to have shelled out for the book. It's fun to be able to read about their efforts without having to go to the effort to remember when the show is on tv ...
Well written, with the same sense of humor and fun that Adam and Jamie display on the air.
(And, for the reviewer who panned the book because she 'didn't know it was based on a tv show,' ... why should you blame the book because you didn't read the description? The summary very clearly states what the book is about, and what it's based on!)

5 out of 5 stars Great pictures and myths- should come out with more of these.......2006-12-31

This is a fun little book with great color pictures and interesting myths. One could be tempted to skip through all the writing about what they actually did during the show and just read if the myth's busted. Very interesting and easy to just flip through- certainly don't need to read it cover to cover.

Considering these 30 myths were probably from about 20 of their many episodes, they should come out with more books like this so people who don't get the Discovery Channel (like me) and can only catch it occasionally somewhere else can read up on the myths in these nifty books.

1 out of 5 stars Mythbusters a bust.......2006-06-29

I did not realize that this book was based on a television show because I do not watch television. I thought it was about debunking urban legends such as alligators in New York sewers and such; I was not expecting a lot of scientific proofs of how balloons fly and so on. I definitely wasted my money on this one.

5 out of 5 stars BEST SHOW ON TELEVISION.......2005-12-05

This show is in its 4th Season, and Adam and Jamie STILL haven't run out of urban legends to put the scientific test to. Fascinating and fun science. Nice to have 30 of the best myths in book form, but the real way to enjoy "Mythbusters" is to watch the show -- every week on Discovery -- and to buy the DVD collections. And if you love Mythbusters, be sure to pick up all of the books by Jan Harold Brunvand ("The Baby Train", "The Choking Doberman", "Curses! Broiled Again!", "The Urban Legend Encyclopedia", and many more titles). Also, check out the new book "Turn Me On, Dead Man" by Andru J. Reeve. It explores, in depth, the entire story behind the Paul McCartney Death Hoax of 1969. Like the Mythbusters, Reeve gets to the truth behind the myth. Buy all of these books and DVDs right here at Amazon.com and watch "Mythbusters" every Wednesday on Discovery.

Book Description

This unique book provides accurate descriptions of prisons and prison life, written by a prisoner sentenced to life, who uses the pseudonym "K. C. Carceral" to hide his identity for protection. With the assistance of editors Thomas Bernard, Leanne F. Alarid, Bruce Bikle, and Alene Bikle, this book presents a gripping, and often graphic, portrayal of life in prison. This narrative presentation of such topics as prison violence, friendships, sexual mores, and serving time includes graphic language and situations. Through the powerful personal experiences of the author, readers are better equipped to develop informed opinions about the American prison system. Inspired to write about his experiences in prison, Carceral sought the help of noted academics, including Thomas Bernard, to create a powerful and informative narrative. This is the first textbook written by a life-sentenced inmate. Bernard, along with editors Leanne F. Alarid, Bruce Bikle and Alene Bikle developed the manuscript to ensure its suitability for classroom use in colleges and universities. The wide range of topics covered includes entrance into prison; prison life, including violence in prisons; dealing with time; prison politics and economics; sex, racism, retaliation, and gangs.

5 out of 5 stars Well worth doing the time to read.......2005-03-01

It doesn't seem like it would be easy to have an impact on society from behind prison walls, but, easy or not, that is what K. C. Carceral has achieved. "Behind a Convict's Eyes" is tangible proof that even a convicted felon may make an important and positive contribution.

Carceral (the name is a pseudonym meaning "belonging to a prison") is a convicted murderer serving a life sentence who has created a series of vivid word portraits of inmate life. These capture not only his own experiences, but the politics, economics, and culture of prisons as well.

The portraits done, Carceral follows with a scholarly effort that builds on an existing theory of "toxic shame identity" to suggest why people become criminals.

His own work is supplemented throughout by "discussions" from the four editors of the book.

Carceral says little about the crime that brought him to life in prison. Reading his book cannot help but make one wonder what he could have achieved had he not committed his crime -- or if his contribution to society would have been as great as the one contained in this slim volume.

A book that seems aimed less at the general public than at students and those who work for or deal directly with the criminal justice system, "Behind a Convict's Eyes" deserves a wider audience that it is likely to get.

She was an Oscar-winning Hollywood actress; he the scion of Europe's longest reigning monarchy. The marriage of movie star Grace Kelly and Prince Rainier Grimaldi of Monaco (a romance ironically spawned by a chance, MGM publicity-driven photo op) was one of the 20th century's most enchanting fables come to life. Yet, in veteran Hollywood biographer J. Randy Taraborelli's retelling, (the first comprehensive chronicle of the royal couple's romance and quarter-century reign) their day-to-day struggle with romantic inertia and a legacy of familial dysfunction cast their fairy tale existence in a bittersweet light long before the 1982 automobile accident that took Grace's life.

Taraborelli's struggle to walk the fine line between the respectful biography he intends and the salacious, tell-all exposes he decries makes for occasionally awkward passages. However, the author eventually succeeds in giving his royal subjects--and the ongoing conflicts with their respective families--a familiar, all-too-human scale. --Jerry McCulley

3 out of 5 stars Too Much Whitewashing of Rainier.......2007-07-30

Taraborrelli was clearly fascinated by his primary subject, Grace, but it appears it was Prince Rainier whom he truly fell in love with.

He never once mentions Rainier's notorious infidelities, which began as soon as Grace married him, and continued until she died. According to Wendy Leigh's new book "True Grace", she strayed too, but her affairs started off as quid pro quo for Rainier's constant mistresses (and continued from isolation and loneliness).

This omission is profoundly prejudicial to Grace because it makes it look like she was just too shallow to give up her attachment to her movie career and thus made herself morbidly unhappy with her new life in Monaco. In fact, she did struggle with that loss, but her greatest heartbreak in Monaco was that she married a philandering, obnoxious, overbearing, insensitive and dismissive popinjay of a prince.

Taraborrelli should have waited for Rainier's death to write Grace's biography. Maybe then he wouldn't have been so tempted to whitewash Rainier into the caring, tender, appreciative and supportive husband he most certainly was not.

Shame on you Randy.

4 out of 5 stars A Real Life Fairy Tale?.......2007-01-11

This book details the lives of Grace Kelly and Rainier Grimaldi otherwise known as Princess Grace and Prince Rainier of Monaco both before and after their "marriage of the century."

Grace Kelly was born in Pittsburgh, PA. In 1929 to Jack and Margret Kelly. She had an older sister Margaret (Peggy) and older brother Jack Jr (Kell) as well as a younger sister Elizabeth Anne (Lizanne). From the time that she was young she wanted to be an actress. When she was a teenager she modeled to pay for an acting school and thanks to her uncle George got some early work on the stage. Soon after she started making movies such as High Noon (with Gary Cooper), Mogambo (with Clark Gable) and won an Oscar for her portrayal in The Country Girl. It was because of this that she was offered the opportunity to go to Cannes to the Cannes Film Festival. During her time in France she also was offered the opportunity to go to Monaco to visit Prince Rainier little realizing that the visit would change her life.

Prince Rainier was born in 1923. His mother was the illegitimate daughter of the Prince of Monaco and married a French Duke in 1920. Rainier had a younger sister named Antoinette. When Rainier was six his parents divorced and he and Antoinette were mostly raised by their grandfather. Rainier was educated in England and France and in 1949 became heir to his grandfather's throne after his mother and sister renounced it. He became Prince of Monaco in 1950. During this time he was single, but dating an actress. Shortly before Grace Kelly's visit he and the actress broke up.

Several months after the meeting between Grace and Rainier he came to the United States. Grace and Rainier used this time to better know each other and shortly after Christmas they became engaged. After several months of negotiations they where married in Monaco. Nine months later they had their first child, Caroline, and five months after that Grace was pregnant with Prince Albert. They later added to the family with princess Stephanie.

The marriage between Princess Grace and Prince Rainier was not always the best, but ultimalty they loved each other and their three children. When Grace was killed in 1981 after a car crash Rainier mourned her for the rest of his life.

5 out of 5 stars This book is better than 3.5 stars........2006-05-19

This book gets 5 stars for research, 5 stars for presentation (simply a photo of Grace in THAT wedding dress justifies a book existing) and 4 stars for a good read; It's not that it could have been any better, it's just that the story is ultimately sad. However, I think the subject matter was taken very seriously by the author, and unlike other reviewers here, I consider the thoughts expressed to be well thought out and supported by the material that was uncovered in the process, including that from interviews. What other material is ever likely to be uncovered on this subject?? This book is better than 3.5 stars.

5 out of 5 stars The American Aristocrat who Became a European Princess.......2006-04-16

Like Jackie Kennedy, Grace Kelly was born to a very privileged life in Philadelphia and was a debutant before she was a Hollywood Star. Cool, poised, aloof, and classy she was the blonde counterpart to Kennedy's dark mysterious allure. But her fairytale life had no happy ending and despite its glamour was all too human.

5 out of 5 stars princess grace.......2005-10-06

anyone interested in the life of grace kelly or the principality
of monaco should definitely read this book.
the author goes in depth about the joys and sorrows of her
(the princess') life to the point that it makes the reader feel
like you personally knew her;a very emotional book to read.
the small independent state of monaco came rather close to losing its sovereignty to france
but thanks to the story in this book it maintains its unique identity in todays modern world.

This mammoth history of the dynasty that created and controls The New York Times is as epic in its scope as is the role of the newspaper in America. Like any good epic, this story is filled with its fair share of personal ambition, disappointment, competing heirs to the throne, fierce loyalties, and powerful intrigue. The story of The Times starts in 1896, when Adolph Ochs, a young German Jew, buys the undistinguished and nearly bankrupt The New-York Times (the dash was later dropped). He worked hard to distinguish its style from the florid journalism that marked rival papers, and soon Ochs's paper, with its straightforward reporting, became the favorite of the Wall Street and Uptown sets. He toiled, too, to ensure that The Times never earned the moniker "too Jewish." Ochs assiduously declined to promote Jewish editors and was an outspoken opponent of the free state of Israel. And writers Susan Tifft and Alex Jones argue persuasively that in its drive to appear absolutely objective about Jewish issues, the paper (under the leadership at this point of Ochs's son-in-law Arthur Hays Sulzberger) underreported the Holocaust--keeping stories of Hitler's early maneuvers off the front page, failing to name concentration-camp victims as Jews. Though significant, World War II was just one moment in the hundred-year-long history of the paper thus far. The Trust vividly chronicles some of the The Times's most famous moments--the controversial publication of the Pentagon Papers and its transition to a publicly held company in the late '60s are just two--along with the personal histories of four generations of Ochses and Sulzbergers. With its strong foundation of well-researched facts, thoughtful analysis, and excellent narration, The Trust is itself a great work of journalism that does its storied subject proud. --Anna Baldwin

Book Description

Through their dynastic control of The New York Times, the Ochses and Sulzbergers have been the most powerful family in twentieth-century America. Not only have they owned the Times for more than a hundred years, but a family member has always been at the paper's helm, a position that has given them enormous influence and has been passed down as a birthright through four generations. Yet by design they have always been intensely private, shunning the visibility their stature inherently commands. The Trust is the first full-scale portrait of this modern monarchy, a dramatic saga set against a backdrop of world events and the burden and privilege of wealth and power. Here is the story of Adolph Ochs, a visionary dedicated to presenting the news objectively, a man who appeared supremely confident yet was often racked by depression and insecurity; of his daughter, Iphigene, an exceptional woman whose gender prevented her from achieving official authority at the Times but who used her position as family matriarch to foster and guard its mystique; of her husband, Arthur Hays Sulzberger, who began his career at the Times as an unpromising son-in-law but went on to become a brilliant and controversial publisher, steering the paper through the crises of World War II, the Holocaust, and the excesses of McCarthyism; of his only son, Punch, who came to the publisher's job with little discernible talent, yet proved tough enough to guide the paper to its greatest journalistic and financial heights; and of the paper's most recent leader, Arthur Sulzberger Jr., who struggles daily with the task of preserving his forebears' values amid the uncertainties of a digital age.

With novelistic drive and detail, The Trust tells the story of how the domestic dramas of one extraordinary clan shaped the pages of the greatest newspaper in the world; of a Jewish family that found itself under attack for its policies from both anti-Semites and Jews alike; of succession battles, human frailty, and tremendous affluence; and of the legacy of public responsibility that has driven the family to serve as devoted stewards of a trust they hold sacred.

The Trust was written with the full cooperation of the Ochses and Sulzbergers and unconditional access to The New York Times' archives, but with the authors retaining complete independence. The result is not only a richly detailed portrait of an American dynasty but a fascinating chronicle of the twentieth century. --This text refers to the hardcover edition of this title

3 out of 5 stars The fall and decline of a family paper.......2005-01-01

It is not surprising that this book's major revelations have not had greater circulation given the nature of family ownership of the vast majority of the biggest media conglomerates in the country, including the massive Gannett holdings of all forms of media all over the world, the enormous Newhouse "out-of-the-shtetl" holdings of not only papers, but magazines, book publishers and electronic media, the Washington Post, and its TV stations, etc., but you would think that some of them would be discussed a bit more than zero. Unknown in the US is any coverage of what the rest of the world classifies as the "Jewish conspiracy" of media dominance in the US. It appears daily in the major media in the Islamic world as the reason for US support of Israel and the reason for jihad against the infidels. It also explains much of French, German and British hatred of the US, long before GW Bush showed up. This book covers some of this, but not much, and is one of the reasons it does not get more stars. But the book has some great insights such as the following.
Did you know that Punch Sulzberger viewed the current publisher, his son "Pinch" Sulzberger's positions on the Vietnam War to be treasonous because his son said he would cheer on the death of an American soldier over a Viet Cong in Vietnam in a face to face fight? Do you know that the majority of the editorial positions at the Times are held by militant homosexuals, and that one of the editorial writers at the Times is married to a member of the Massachusetts Supreme court who cast the deciding vote on the issue of legalizing gay marriage in that state but never revealed his affiliation in his many columns on the issue? (The Times' own ombudsman, Daniel Okrent, recently said that the Times' coverage of homosexual issues has crossed the line from reportage to advocacy.) Do you know that the Times is a "publicly held" company, but the family has prevented any kind of modern corporate governance with its stranglehold on its preferred stock while at the same time the paper screams about corporate transparency at every other corporation in the US? And that is just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to "The Trust" that guarantees the succession of the male heir to the throne. A corrupt American version of British primogeniture in kingly succession to the Time's monarchy.
But this book also shows why the Times has become a shadow of its former self, is beset by scandal after scandal such as the Jason Blair forgeries (which occurred after the publication of this book) and has resulted in the gradual decline of a formerly great paper. While newspapers are probably doomed in this century, just as the town criers before them, as they are replaced by the internet and cable television news, you can find out why The New York Times is in its death spiral by reading this book. Unfortunately the authors were reluctant to get into the business consequences of the loss of credibility of publications such as the Times with mainstream Americans, but this is still a very worthwhile book. Unfortunately the billions of dollars sucked out of the unsuspecting shareholder of the Times never gets to read about the corruption and moral bankruptcy of current Times management, but this book would be a good place to start.

5 out of 5 stars Grand and compulsively readable.......2003-02-24

This is a monumental work of multiple biography and institutional history.

It is cumpulsively readable, like a good novel. This book became my trusted companion during many relaxing evening hours and solitary restaurant meals.

It is also admirably crafted. As in their previous book The Patriarch (about the Bingham family of the Louisville Courier-Journal), Tifft and Jones write beautifully and with great skill for handling detail and narrative.

They also have the ability to balance candor and fairness, steering a sober, high-minded course between warts-and-all skepticism and obsequious hagiography. As a reader you sense you are getting a careful portrait of each major character's personality, strengths, foibles, fond traits, and character flaws, while never getting the feeling the authors are doing either a flack job or a hatchet job.

That's not to say certain characters don't come off better than others. For example, the authors seem consistently sympathetic toward the modestly talented, often hapless but usually wise "Punch" Sulzberger, the dominant figure at the Times from the mid 60s through the mid 90s, while casting his wife Carol as a shallow, cold-hearted Nancy Reagan type. But the book rings of truth and authority, and so one generally trusts the authors' assessments.

While this book overwhelmingly is concerned with people, not events, it provides a valuable account of the internal debates over whether and how to publish the Pentagon Papers. It also illustrates the paper's vigorous post-war anti-communism, its cozy relationship with the Eisenhower administration, its internal battles over editorial voice during the political and cultural upheavals of the 1970s, and its generational differences over homosexuality (contrasting Punch's bigotry with his son and successor Arthur Jr.'s determination to make the Times a progressive place for gays to work). Two consistent threads run throughout the book: the Sulzbergers' ambivalence over their Jewish heritage, and their determination to place journalistic excellence and family control of the paper over the business strategems and high profits necessary to please Wall Street.

This book will be of great interest to journalism junkies. But it also commends itself to all lovers of serious biography.

3 out of 5 stars Beside the Times.......2002-11-10

This massive chronicle of the Ochs-Sulzbergers and their stewardship of the New York Times gets off to a fascinating start, dramatizing Adolph Ochs' purchase of the then nothing New-York Times and detailing his wildly successful efforts to build a paper of note.

But once Ochs vanishes from the narrative, bequeathing the editorship to son-in-law Arthur Sulzberger, the book slowly loses steam. Focus shifts from the newsroom to the myriad Ochs-Sulzberger relatives and their beside-the-Times activities, in response to which a reader can only offer a heartfelt shrug.

In defense of The Trust it has been pointed out that the authors set out to write about the family rather than the paper, but apparently there's little of inherent interest in the Ochs-Sulzbergers outside the Times. Down the backstretch, the authors seem as bored as the reader, dutifully recounting the gossipy infighting among far-flung cousins.

The Trust, excellent as much of it is, comes to seem unfortunately conceived -- the newsroom coverage is exemplary, but the beside the Times gossip grows quickly tiresome.

1 out of 5 stars Shame on Alex Jones and Susan Tifft.......2002-03-05

The only positive comment one can make about this sorely disappointing excavation of the Sulzbergers and their newspaper is that it's written in fluid, clear prose. That's it! This is quite surprising given the credentials of these two supposedly fine journalists; they did a wonderful job excavating another newspaper dynasty -- the Binghams. But this time, little insight is offered; instead, the reader is loaded down with gratuitious gossip. Historic and psychological contexts are shabbily rendered. One can't help but wonder if Mr. Jones, who comes from a newspaper dynasty himself, albeit of a much smaller scale, was not dealing -- negatively dealing -- with his own issues in this book. The Sulzbergers, particularly, Arthur jr, a brilliant, progressive, and humane publisher, and deserve better.

5 out of 5 stars The Kennedys of Journalism.......2001-08-28

Tifft and Jones rip the gown off the old Gray Lady to reveal the hidden secrets of the family that made the New York Times the respected powerhouse it is today. The story of the Ochs/Sulzburger clan appeals on two levels. First, it is the story of the making of the newspaper, the ethical and financial decisions required to make the Times both reputable and profitable. And second, it is a good old scandal story, filled with affairs and family altercations, and Times Square palace intrigues. While the book remains superficial about the journalism, it delves deeply into the characters, who are of course the most fun part of the tale.

Story Behind the Book

With the incredible success of this series, we believe that it would be beneficial to the body of Christ for someone to publish a book that gives solid, thoughtful, biblical answers to the critics of the Left Behind theology. With the questions that are being raised and will continue to be raised, many may begin to wonder if the Left Behind theology is really biblical. Some of the impact of the series could be undermined. This book would set forth substantive biblical points in favor of the various end times events presented in the series.

5 out of 5 stars book review.......2004-06-15

I was quite amazed at the "epistle" negative reviews of this book. One in particular talked about the 'literal' weapons and such. It only took reading three sentences of this review to know that the writer has an extreamly limited knowledge of the Bible itself, and biblical prophecy, yet went on to write what amounted to a 300 word essay. Those who are not of the spirit, can NOT understand the things of the spirit.

5 out of 5 stars Why Not Believe the Truth?.......2004-04-23

I have just finished reading "The Truth Behind Left Behind" by Hitchcock and Ice. As a layman who considers himself to be a well read and versed student on the subject of Bible prophecy, I would consider this book to be an highly accurate and well documented explaination of the end times as they are written in the Bible. Many people who study prophecy have many different interpretations of what, when and how the Bible says that the world will end and Gods Kingdom will be ushered in. To many of those people I would say, "stop trying to read between the lines!" The Bible is the inerrant Word of God and what it says as you read it is exactly what it means. People try to put too much conjecture into Gods Word that simply isn't there. The books of the Old Testament and their prophecies of the end times identically match those in the New Testament so I truly do not understand where most of these detractors of the "Left Behind" series come up with their arguments that say the books are untrue and not well founded. These people are supposed to be Biblical scholars, well they either aren't reading the same Bible I do or they need to work on their comprehension skills. "The Truth Behind Left Behind" is right on the money in explaining the Biblical accuracy and validity of the "Left Behind" series of books concerning end times events. So as I stated in my title, "Why Not Believe the Truth?" this book is a must read for all of those who have been distracted by the detractors. I would recommend that everyone who is seriously interested in the truth about end times events should read "The Truth Behind Left Behind"!

1 out of 5 stars The Fiction Behind Left Behind.......2004-04-16

Let me cite just one example from The Truth Behind Left Behind that makes it a very weak defense of the Left Behind theology. There are many more, but there are space limitations. In Tim LaHaye's Introduction to TBLB, we read: "Jerry [Jenkins] and I have unashamedly taken the position that all prophecy should be interpreted literally whenever possible. We have been guided throughout by the golden rule of interpretation: When the plain sense of Scripture makes common sense, seek no other sense. Take every word at its primary, literal meaning unless the facts of the immediate context clearly indicate otherwise" (7). So shouldn't the reader interpret the weapons of Ezekiel 38-39--bows, arrows, shields, war clubs, spears, horses, and chariots--literally? Not according to our authors. Here's their interpretation from their chapter "The Coming Russian/Islamic Invasion": "Inspired by the Holy Spirit, Ezekiel spoke in language that the people of his day could understand. If he had spoken of MIG-29s, laser-fired missiles, tanks, and assault rifles, this text would have been nonsensical to everyone until the twentieth century" (47). Of course, this is question begging in the extreme. Why would the people in Ezekiel's day need to understand a prophecy if it wasn't meant for them? Why confuse them and us? How do Hitchcock, Ice, and LaHaye KNOW that this is what the Holy Spirit meant? Once the trio makes these ancient weapons of no consequence, they are free to create their own prophetic scenario that can't be tested because it all takes place after Christians are no longer here! Convenient. Consider their words: "The focus clearly is NOT the specific weapons that will be used by these invaders" (47). What happened to "literal interpretation"? The weapons may not be the passage's "focus," but they can't be dismissed as inconsequential to the narrative. The weapons are part of the story from beginning to end, and if taken literally would negate the future scenario outlined by the authors. They claim that Ezek. 38-39 has to be a DISTANT future battle because it takes place in the "latter years" (38:8) and the "last days" (38:16). Most biblical scholars, even some dispensationalists, would say that these two time expressions most often mean nothing more than "in the future" or "in the days to come." The same Hebrew phrase is translated as "the days to come" in Num. 24:14, which probably refers to David's victory over Moab. The prophecy of Deut. 31:29, where the same expression is used, came to pass in the period of the Judges (cf. 2:20-21). Here's how one Bible expositor explains it: "this expression does not refer to 'the latter days' (KJV, RSV) in the eschatological sense. . . , but rather to that portion of the future that falls within the scope of the speaker's perspective (cf. Gen. 49:1)." Then one has to wonder why the authors avoid interacting with Edwin M. Yamauchi's Foes of the Northern Frontier which refutes their historical, geographical, and lexographic arguments line by line, and it was written in 1982! Yamauchi is a noted expert on this subject. The Russian invasion premise is only one of the book's many problems. If readers are interested in this topic, I suggest that they pick up a copy of End Times Fiction: A Biblical Consideration of the Left Behind Theology written by me. Since Hitchcock and Ice refer to it several times, it would be helpful to read what they do not deal with.

I waited for this book for months. It's a fair read but the information's chunky. Mark's written much better. Read Mark's, 'WOEIGO' instead.

4 out of 5 stars A good explanation of the truth behind Left Behind........2004-04-05

This book has very good explanations for the questions raised by many of the readers of the Left Behind series. It is a good companion to "Are We Living In The End Times?" by LaHaye and Jenkins. I encourage readers to read this book side by side with a Bible, in order to reach a satisfactory conclusion.
There are several views of interpretation of the End Times, and I happen to agree with the view presented in Left Behind.
For all serious seekers and skeptics out there, there are many good books on Bible Prophecy and Eschathology, but the best answers will always come from the Bible.
To anyone interested in this subject, I suggest taking a good course on it at your local Bible college, or attend a class or teaching of prophecy at your local church.
The LB series is fictional, but the events are very real nevertheless. They will happen. Weather they will happen as portrayed or not, they will happen regardless.
This is a very good book indeed, although I did expect a little more of it than what was delivered (thus the 4 stars), but it's still good enough for answering basic questions.

5 out of 5 stars A True Bible Of This Time.......2007-01-10

The very first movie I saw in the early 80's was Deep Throat and Alice In Wonderland. When the AVN Guide came out I bought it right away knowing all the movies that were rated were going to be someday the best of it's kind. AVN, what would I do without you, Thank You!

3 out of 5 stars Greatness comes with age.......2006-03-30

I understand that they wanted to focus on films from all eras of adult cinema, but it's hard for me to ever see something labeled as great when it just came out two seconds ago. I guess it was ok for the price, but I would've liked to see a better job done in terms of page quality (glossy would've been nice, especially for the photos). The book could also have been bigger. I expected more from something from AVN.
