Recieved the book today and couldn't put it down. I am amazed how the simple rules put forth in this book are not used by modern business.

Kudos to the Authors.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars What a flop.......2007-02-24

This guy appears to be pushing some fairly common stuff like family limited partnerships. I wasted my money buying his book. Nothing earthshattering or creative about his structures. They put "JD" after his name and not "Esq" does that mean he never passed the Bar exam? I found that by simply searching for asset protection on Google you can find a lot of law firm and other websites where you can learn about all these strategies for free.

5 out of 5 stars I read this book and it was great!.......2005-04-21

I found this book very easy to understand and informative. I have attended estate planning seminars and other financial conferences, but came away overwhelmed and confused. Jay has a great personal story that really adds to his credibility. After I finished reading it, I immediately read it again. I know what to do and what not to do. I have changed the way I do business since I read this book.
The negative review by "Cool Cat" is obviously biased if you read all of his reviews. He only endorses one asset protection book and it's probably his own. My guess is that he never read any of these books and is eihter Jay Adkisson himself or one of his associates. Notice that his review doesn't focus on the book, but rather attacks Jay Mitton. This seems typical for most attorneys.

5 out of 5 stars Fantastic Book .......2005-04-21

I have read hundred of books on finances and I would rate this book near the top as to its usefulness. I learned more about asset protection from reading this book than I have learned from the hundreds of hours I have spent with CPAs, attorneys and financial advisors over the years.

1 out of 5 stars Pass.......2004-10-25

Among his estate planning peers, Jay Mitton is one of the least liked and most notorious attorneys because of his heavy marketing of arguably worthless pre-made kits for family limited partnerships. The low quality of these kits, combined with Mitton's less-than-truthful marketing, has generated some scathing comments on the American Bar Association's estate planning bulletin board. The Supreme Court of Florida in fact entered an order prohibiting him from marketing in that state. The guy is a great marketer, to be sure, but his products can be charitably described as substandard and if you buy his book you need to also buy a ton of salt to go with it.

2 out of 5 stars At Least the cover looks nice (somewhat).......2006-12-05

For any prospective Law student, you don't need a Juris Doctor to know that the entire process of becoming a lawyer is going to be long, monotonous, and exhausting. "The Law School Survival Guide" does it's best (we assume) in trying to address every step of the law school ladder. Starting from "Why go to Law school?" right up to passing the BAR exam.
However, when done reading this book, you may be baffled by whether or not JD Jungle tried to the fullest extent possible to bestow the most detailed and accurate information to a prospective law student. The book resembles something of a last minute middle school project thrown together on Sunday night when it's due date is on Monday. Important information needed to make big decisions for a law student is minuscule in comparison to sections that are of less importance. For example; "Paying for Your Education" chapter is a mere 5 pages while the "Summer Reading" section that includes such sensational suggestions like "The Crucible" and "Feminism Unmodified" deprives the reader of 8 pages of actually relevant information.
Not much information is provided to the reader about how to actually get into law school. After all, if you don't actually get into a law school, this book would be rather useless.
A brief deal of information is set forth about passing the LSAT. The LSAT is one of the most important and difficult steps in entering law school. A law professor once said "Law school is much harder to get into than actually passing". I HIGHLY recommend a prospective law student to invest in a more in-depth LSAT review book that synopsizes the test as well as prepares the LSAT taker with the material. Almost Anything from Kaplan or Law School Admission Council is money well spent.
A lengthily amount of time is spent on "Eat Right: The Art of the Recruiting Meal". Where many of their "Etiquette" tips are pretty much given; such as make sure your fly is zipped up and shower before going.
Some of the finer points about the book include a rather detailed chapter about the dreaded first year of Law School. Or at least it appears to be to a non JD-reader. However, once again the book falls short, and fails to detail what second and third years academics involve. JD Jungle instead explains clerkships and summer associate positions leaving the reader with nothing more than "third and second year academics are much easier. You get to pick your subjects............(next chapter)" Though the monstrous summer associate stories are mildly funny.
The "Passing the BAR exam" chapter does anything but motivate or provide helpful advice. Rather it spends pages telling tales of horror and pure terror to the test taker. You might get a chuckle out of it but will still have no idea where you should begin to prepare for the BAR.
Now for the most laughable chapter of the entire book; Chapter 10 "Inspiration". JD Jungle takes a shot at providing "Inspirational" interviews to six so-called "Legal Luminaries", which include:
1. Erin Brockovich (who is more of a Hollywood celebrity/Oprah show guest than a legal pundit and has never even been through law school)
2. A liberal Supreme Court Justice (which they admit)
3. A Kennedy family member turned environmental crusader
4. A tobacco company suing lawyer
5. An ACLU working anti-capital punishment lawyer
6. A comical NAACP Al Sharpton emulating lawyer

Inspiration? Inspiration for what? Maybe a Law Student can go sue McDonalds for making kids fat after reading JD Jungle's "Inspiration" chapter. I am rather sure their "Inspiration" is perfectly befitting to the San Francisco progressively ambitious law student but to the rest of us, it merits nothing more than a good laugh.
If you just pick up "The Law School Survival Guide" you can notice the modest width of the book. This should provide a hint that the Law School process is much more complex and labyrinthian than 190-something pages of their "advice". If possible, look into "Law School Confidential" or even search "Law School" on amazon for a worthier law school guide.

1 out of 5 stars Skim it for free at the library!.......2003-10-15

I took this book out from the library, instead of buying it...I would have been really disappointed if I had wasted my money. Right now, I am in the process of applying to law schools and checked out a few books...the ones I plan on buying are "Law School Confidential" and "Planet Law School"...I've also heard really good things about "Law School Insider". "JD Jungle" is so light weight in comparison. There is nothing new or insightful about this book. The legal pop culture references to television, movies & sensational trials - feel more like name dropping than useful information. Erin Brockovich in a law school guide? C'mon! She's never even gone to law school. Who needs to hear about how well Julia Roberts portrayed her in a law school guide?!? I did find the interview of Justice Stevens insightful...but again not enough to justify buying this book.

2 out of 5 stars Survival Guide sinks.......2003-07-23

I expected more from JD Jungle. A barebones guide, only sparse and vague advice is given on how to study, how to brief a case, how to outline for exams, and understanding the IRAC procedure. A mere 1.5 pages were devoted to how to ace law school exams, for example. No example cases or practice briefs were provided unlike other law school prep books I have read.
The only reason that I gave the book 2 stars instead of 1 was the engaging interviews in the last chapter. The chapter is entitled "Inspiration" and it did not disappoint.
Such legal heavy-weights such as Erin Brockovich, Justice John Paul Stevens, and Robert F. Kennedy, Jr. are included in this chapter.
In sum, I would recommend a different guide. Or, better yet, do it the free way~ online. I have gotten extensive feedback from online law student message boards and online advice columns (such as lawnerds).

Book Description

In recent years, the stock market has undergone revolutionary change at virtually every level: new players, new technologies, new information flows, and new macroeconomic conditions. These changes are radically impacting investors, whether they know it or not.

Now, you can profit from the changes--instead of being victimized by them. Wall Street insider Michael J. Panzner will show you how. Panzner reveals how falling transaction costs and a barrage of data are transforming traditional investment patterns, and how stocks are increasingly being bought and sold like commodities. Discover the impact that electronic trading, instant messaging, and hedge funds are having on intraday volatility and short-term direction. Learn how an era of "boom and bust" have altered investor behavior and risk preferences, why today's market is increasingly emotional, and why many traditional indicators simply don't work anymore.

From the growing role of derivatives to the increasing unpredictability of seasonal and cyclical patterns, this book takes you "under the hood" of today's equity markets... so you can develop a winning investment strategy for today's new realities.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Insightful!.......2005-09-06

Investment pro Michael J. Panzner offers an insider's guide to Wall Street that will appeal to investors on several levels. He starts with easy-to-comprehend definitions of stock market terms such as "short-selling" and "equity-derivative products," and advances to more sophisticated concepts. With his down-to-earth approach, he demystifies the jargon, hype and superfluous data. What's more, he provides an excellent account of the historical factors and recent innovations that have altered global finance. His "10 laws of the new investment universe" are useful and comprehensive. Unfortunately, Panzner tends to glorify the past, glossing over well-documented foibles to focus on modern sins. Still, he provides a frank and insightful view of Wall Street's seductive lure. We recommend this book to investors who want to understand today's market.

3 out of 5 stars nothing new, but detailed explanations.......2005-06-24

While the basic premise of the book is that "investing world has changes and therefore so should you", is certainly true, it doesnt really bring anything original or substantially novel. The author discusses in great detail, well supported by data and analysis, the impact on different aspects or the new "rules of the jungle". Topics such as as increased appetite for speculation are well know now, but the facts behind those conclusions are explained in a detailed manner. Overall, it is an interesting treatment of the topics, though brevity is not one of the author's strong points. Dont expect to find any significant information that will alter your portfolio, but it may give you some info on how things work in stock markets and some of the trends associated with trading. Could have been a 4 or 5 star book, but the arguments and explanations are a bit too long-winded....

2 out of 5 stars Longing for the good old days.......2005-05-30

I didn't warm to this book. The author seems to lament the 'good old days' when individuals were forced to relay their orders through brokers. This offered brokers a wonderful insight on the directions markets would take since they had first hand information about the next day's trading session, from the best and worst traders. A broker can make a lot of money with that.

Alas, these days are gone. People now use electrical order placement systems and brokers are just as clueless as the retail traders. Pity. Of course, few of us had this inside track and I'm not sure we need to lament its passing.

The musings described above make up the bulk of the book. Here is a summary of the changes. Each of these topics is given chapter long treatment.:

Intraday volatility:
New rule: Intraday share price volatility is on the rise.
Old rule: In the past, wide intraday share price swings were less common, and when they did occur they were often associated with unexpected geopolitical or economic developments.

Trading like commodities:
New rule: Stocks are increasingly being bought and sold like commodities.
Old rule: In the past, institutions generally bought and sold stocks based on traditional methods of investment analysis, often with a longer-term perspective in mind.

Approaches and attitudes:
New rule: Investing and reason frequently give way to speculation and emotion.
Old rule: In the past, institutional buying and selling was primarily driven by logic and measured analysis (although emotions have always influenced investor behavior).

Information and communications.
New rule: More information and faster communications often have unexpected consequences.
Old rule: In the past, information tended to circulate around the marketplace in a slower and more orderly fashion, and the telephone was the primary means of communication.

Derivatives:
New rule: Derivatives are exerting a growing influence on share prices.
Old rule: In the past, the action in the derivatives market was generally secondary to what took place in the underlying cash markets (except on certain occasions, such as Triple Witching Fridays).

Seasonality and cycles.
New rule: Many seasonal and cyclical patterns are becoming less predictable.
Old rule: In the past, many seasonal and cyclical patterns were less widely known and were not affected by today's rapidly changing market forces.

Form and fantasy.
New rule: Substance and reality increasingly give way to form and fantasy.
Old rule: In the past, data produced and distributed by companies, analysts, government agencies, and others was less subject to error, distortion, and manipulation.

Market Indicators:
New rule: Many traditional market indicators are becoming less reliable.
Old rule: In the past, many market indicators were less widely known and were not affected by today's rapidly changing market forces.

Global factors:
New rule: Global factors and foreign investors are exerting a growing influence on share prices.
Old rule: In the past, American investors and domestic concerns were much more relevant to the direction of U.S. share prices than overseas influences.

The book is also sprinkled with 'action plans'. Here are few:
"...when a stock abruptly breaks out of a clearly defined trading range on relatively heavy volume, creating visual "gaps" on a daily bar chart, this is often a sign that a dramatic change in the outlook has taken place."

"When volatility begins to intensify after share prices have fallen for an extended period of time, it often indicates that a downtrend is nearing an end, at least in the short run."

None of this interests me a great deal. Upon reflection, the title suggests a much better book, something along the lines of 'Post 2003 changes in securities trading rules, and how to use them for competitive advantage'. This book would investigate the surreal world of Sarbanes-Oxley, how securities are added/subtracted from the Russell 2000, etc.

5 out of 5 stars A very good read.......2005-03-06

The most appealing aspect of this book is the thesis itself -- the investment world is changing. This is the first book I've read that effectively addresses many of the cause-and-effect relationships taken place in today's stock global market. I thoroughly enjoyed the derivatives, trading like commodities and the global factors chapters.

Overall, I found this book to be a very good read.

1 out of 5 stars Disappointing.......2005-03-06

My reason for purchasing this book was because a number of experienced and well-known markets participants gave great reviews for Stock Market Jungle. Don't make the same mistake I made. I doubt that most of the reviewers listed in the book actually read it. The book itself adds little to anyone who is the least bit knowledgable about the financial industry. Your time would be better spent reading any one of a thousand other business/financial books.

Customer Reviews:

1 out of 5 stars Law is "well paying?" Please.............2006-08-03

Outside of the top firms in major cities, law is a horrible profession that pays terribly. Even smaller firms in big cities like NY, LA, Boston etc. often offer starting salaries of less than 50,000. Only a tiny percentage of law school grads will have a shot at working for a large firm for a six-figure income. Imagine putting up with this miserable joke of a "career" for 1/3 the money biglaw pays. Small firms are horrible too.

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Information and an Entertianing Read.......2005-10-05

I am currently a sophomore in college and I picked up this book over the summer. It is full of useful information that will help me plan the next couple years of my life in preparing to be a lawyer. It gives examples of what sorts of thing a young lawyer will encounter. It is extremely informative, very funny, and straightforward. I recommend anyone considering the field of law read this book for a lawyers perspective on the years of law school and beyond.

1 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money.......2005-03-31

This book was such a disappointment that I'm actually taking the time to write a review. I had high hopes that this book would provide an insightful overview of the experience of being an associate at a Big Law firm. I have some tough questions regarding how to respond to sexual harassment, how to respond to bullying condescension (sp?), and how to succeed both professionally and socially in that kind of environment. This book barely addresses them. It promises more than it delivers. The author's informal writing style wouldn't be as irritating if the book were actually insightful, but he goes on these useless, not-funny tangents, especially in his footnotes, that only waste the reader's time. I haven't yet found the book that I'm looking for -- what I described above. From the looks of the reviews of "Sisters in Law," it looks like that book isn't it, either.

Also, note that Messinger hasn't even worked for a Big Law firm in any of the major U.S. legal markets like NYC or DC. He lives in Honolulu. So what does he know? I should have seen this red flag before I bought this book.

5 out of 5 stars A helpful book for the new attorney.......2002-05-19

This book includes solid advice for the new attorney. The problem most new lawyers have is not that they're not smart, but that they don't know what to do, and sometimes even how to behave in a profession setting. I recommend this book to all of our new associates. (Actually, it's quite humorous in parts.) Every one of them has told me that it has helped them in their jobs and in their relationships with senior partners. (One senior partner even told me he was impressed with how much better one associate was behaving. I didn't have the heart to tell him that this book was the reason why.) Strongly recommended.

1 out of 5 stars Save your money for another book.......2002-04-27

This book is nothing more than the author's attempt to act smarter, and more well educated, than he actually is. From his blatant use of a thesaurus on every other word, to his analogies with Confucius, the Hitler Jugend, the Soviet Komsomol, and hundreds of others; the author tries to sound like a genius.
Although there is some useful information, I urge you to save your money for other law books. In this one, you won't find more than two informative sentences before the author deviates to three paragraphs of useless cliches, quotes in foreign languages, and endless rigmarole. The author has desperately tried to make this book much more than it actually is. As a result, the 225 pages actually contain only 20-25 pages of useful information.

The first time I read this book, I read it cover to cover in a couple of days. It's written in an easy-2-read style, however contains profound insights on life, many of which I found stayed with me for quite a while afterwards. The book also works very well by opening it at a random page & reading whatever turns up. Thanks to the author for sharing his wisdom - highly recommended!

Book Description

A true story of murder, justice, and the military from the author of Marine Sniper, the Vietnam classic with more than a million copies in print.

In Vietnam, they're known as "Jungle Rules"- those by which the U.S. military tries to keep control, often allowing inconvenient facts and regulations to conveniently slip between the cracks. This is the battlefield Captain Terry O'Connor of the JAG Corps is stepping onto.

There's been a murder. After a long day on patrol, Private Celestine Anderson returned to base, only to come under fire from a group of racist white marines. He finally snapped, killing one of his tormentors-and now the inexperienced O'Connor must defend him. But the case pulls O'Connor into the heart of the Vietnam conflict, where bullets overrule books and death is the only judge of men.

I've read and enjoyed all of Charles W. Henderson's books. Jungle Rules is another top notch effort.

5 out of 5 stars Jungle Rules.......2007-07-30

This novel relates true court martial cases from the Viet Nam War, author Henderson weaves the very intriguing true cases using fictitious characters as lawyers and accused. THE JAG office is headed up by a real uptight Col. with a need for his troops to dance to his piping, he is thwarted at every turn by two fresh from the states lawyers who find that justice is far more important than the Colonels vicarious needs. The story is not unlike a legal MASH.
I highly recommend this book, very entertaining.

5 out of 5 stars Entertaining and Authentic Fiction based on Fact.......2007-07-30

I think this is Charles Henderson's most entertaining book since Marine Sniper. There was more to Vietnam than just the battles. This book shows another dimension of the country by describing the DaNang underworld and what happens when some Marines get involved in it. The hook to this story reminds me a little of the TV series Law and Order, which is pitched as fiction based on real life events. This is similar, but set in the Vietnam War and based on a lot of things that did happen in the DaNang area.

This book has plenty of salty language. I also agree that profanity can be badly over-used. That's one of the things that really turned me off to the TV series "Deadwood." Use too much profanity and the words loose their impact, or just become distracting or feel like shtick. I think there's a good balance in Jungle Rules.

Although this book is a very entertaining read, I can't believe Berkeley/Caliber gave it such a lame looking cover. It looks like a history class text book! It totally misses the theme of the story. This novel deserved an exciting looking cover that properly fit the material. I thought about knocking a star off my review over this issue, but I'm not going to penalize the text over a screw up by the publisher's marketing department.

5 out of 5 stars Fictionalized Account of a True Story.......2007-07-28

For individual who states that it doesn't use enough "Muvver-Fletchers" I applaud the restraint. I've read many books over the years, and some authors seem to make them "more authentic" by over-use of foul language. Sell books? I hope not! Clark Gable should have been horse-whipped for using "Frankly my dear, I don't give a da++! This simple departure has flooded the screen with filth. Heck, I spent thirty years in a Marine Corps Uniform, and I'm well aware of some of the rather colorful language that punctuated our speech. I have also read many John W. Thomason novels that I thoroughly enjoyed and no foul language was used - the story was the thing!

I would also like to point out that this is a NOVEL, NOT a true story although it is based on some true events. The characters are fictional (deliberately so I might add). Henderson's writings are excellent; I thoroughly enjoyed his book "Marshalling the Faithful" as that one was a true story and covered a number of personal friends (one of whom had been my room-mate in the Basic Officer's School, and another was a Lieutenant I inherited in the 2nd Recon Battalion after his service in Vietnam). Not only does Henderson tell a great story, it's the way he puts the story together that brings me back to his writings!

Excellent and entertaining reading. He makes it clear that the book is fiction, and his personal experience as a Marine in combat gives it an "aire" of authenticity not normally garnered in current military writing.

Highly recommended - it'll certainly hold your interest if you read it for what it is! If you want everyday "barracks language" give me a call and I'll oblige! Heh, heh, heh...

5 out of 5 stars EXCELLENT BOOK!!!!!!!!!!!.......2007-07-27

I too, was in Vietnam during the time this book was written. I was a machine gunner in the Grunts and this is exactly how "Real Marines" talk and act. Many people "Served" in Vietnam, but "Few" were in the "Mud with the Blood" - This is an OUTSTANDING book written by a former Recon Marine and it doesn't get more "REAL" than that! Charles Henderson is a "Marine's Marine!!!"
Give this book a read and ignore the negative report in this review. Charles Henderson has an outstanding reputation among "Real Combat Marines" and he writes it as it really happened. It took me back to Nam after the first few pages and that's what it is all about.
Charles if you are reading this, your Six will always be covered by me!

1 out of 5 stars pretty bad.......2006-07-04

This is another weak attempt. Mark Millar just can't write. The story is really weak and just sucks. And what is that Punisher story in the back? Is the Punisher gay? What the hell. The Punisher deserves way better. Really reaching on this one. Stay away from this crap!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars a good wolverine collection.......2004-03-16

I found this to be a good Wolverine story. Good art. A lot of fun to read. That is until #186, which is the Punisher story that just seems to be tacked on for no real good reason (oh there is a slight connection--feeble though). And it is drawn like some (bad) Saturday morning cartoon. It's the only weakness in an otherwise good book.

4 out of 5 stars A different Wolverine Story.......2003-05-19

The first time I read this story, it seemed more like The Sopranos than Wolverine. I didn't know what Frank was trying to prove by this until I read a short interview by him, and he grew up near the mafia, so it kinda fit for him. Anyway, after reading it a few times, and looking through it, this is a definative LOGAN story. This isn't Wolverine the superhero, alas, you don't even see him in uniform. But it shows you what he's capable of when not dealing with supervillians, and really sets him in the world, or at least the world of organized crime. Sean Chen's artwork as usual is outstanding, and Edgar Tadeo's inks bring it a grittier feel, along with the duller colors. If you like superheros in uniform fighting for a noble cause, then I would not recomend this book. This is about a man called Logan who takes on a mafia war by force, and does what he does best. Not all that in depth, but he does kick a lot of a**.
Once you realize that's what the intention of this book was, then you appreciate it a little more. And it wraps up nicely, with an ending more appropriate than most.

5 out of 5 stars Except of review from The Muse's News -December 2000 Issue.......2000-12-13

Joy has really put something special together here. Not only is the information explained in easily understood terms using specific (if manufactured) examples, but the readers on the tapes speak well, slowly enough to be clearly understood, and made me feel comfortable listening to them. (I swear that James' voice reminds me of the narrator from that really popular Civil War documentary...) Confused about Copyrights? Don't understand why a Poor Man's Copyright won't hold up in a court of law? Want to know the difference between a mechanical license and a performing rights license? Interested in the legal differences between major record labels and independent labels? Want to know how best to go about retaining a music lawyer, should you need one? There are a whole host of other answers to frequently asked questions on the subject of music law - each one answered succinctly (and without talking down to the audience that would be listening to it, which I feel is very important), then cross-referenced in the small booklet that's included. It's a portable guide that will give you the basics without requiring you to read a huge tome on the subject. This is one of the best references I've seen on this very confusing topic in YEARS. For ...... - less than most printed publications on the subject, I'd say this is a *very* worthy investment.

5 out of 5 stars Good for beginners and seasoned pros alike..........2000-12-07

The Musician's Guide Through the Legal Jungle is head and shoulders above most of the other books on the industry. It cuts right to the chase without getting bogged down in legalese. Not only is the interview format easy for the layman to understand, but the audiobook gives him action items that he can use immediately. I also commend Joy Butler on the accompanying booklet. While other books contain page after page after page of dense text that can be at times hard to follow, the booklet summarizes the most important parts of music law in just 62 pages. It also has one of the easiest to understand breakdowns of how to calculate your record royalties I've ever seen.
