Book Description

The Message
Designed to read like a letter from God, The Message presents Scripture the way it originally appeared, as a naturally flowing narrative. Using only the original Greek and Hebrew manuscripts, The Message’s creator, Eugene Peterson, began by setting the New Testament, Psalms, and Proverbs in contemporary English, free of distracting verse numbers and stiff, formal language. The result has been a warm, highly readable paraphrase that reveals the richly personal nature of God’s Word. The Old Testament followed, and the complete Message Bible was released in 2002. Used in both public preaching and private devotions, The Message has captured the hearts of millions of readers, enriching their understanding of Scripture and deepening their faith.

The New International Version (NIV)
The New International Version (NIV) is today’s most read, most trusted English Bible translation. Since its release in 1973, the NIV has sold over 160 million copies. The goal of the NIV translation team was to produce a contemporary translation whose accuracy, clarity and literary quality would make it ideal for public and private reading, teaching, preaching, memorizing and liturgical use. Today the NIV is accepted by more denominations than any other translation and is supported by a library of reference resources unmatched by any other translation.

The most read, most trusted translation and bestselling paraphrase together in one volume
• The NIV and The Message side by side
• Instant comparison deepens your grasp of Scripture

This is a great bible to get to more easily understand what your reading.
The 2 versions also make it easy to compare against each other and give you another version side by side to read. We are in a small lifegroup that meets once a week and its very helpful for what we are studying and refer to.

The book was here on time but the cover was torn. The book was fine.

5 out of 5 stars Good resource, as long as studied under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.......2007-03-09

T Bauer suggested doing a comparative reading of Psalm 63 in order to see the "danger" of the Message Bible. I took him up on the challenge and would encourage others to do the same. I read Psalm 63 in the KJV, ESV, NIV, and Message. Each of the "translations" was slightly different, but held true to the text. To be honest, the Message was the worst. It remained true to the text, although a couple of the interpretations were fairly loose. However, I need to point out that the Message is a "paraphrase," not a word-for-word or even thought for thought translation. Also, as others have pointed out, the Message Bible's weakness appears to be in its rendering of the Psalms, which are much more poetic.

We must remember that Jesus said that when he left, he would send the Comforter, who would guide us into ALL truth. No matter which Bible we use, it is the Spirit that brings the Word to life and uses it to perform spiritual surgery on our hearts. In fact, he rebuked the religious leaders who studied the scripture, thinking that in them they would find eternal life. The Bible, no matter what version you use, simply points you to the life giver. We must not become so smug as to think that having the "most accurate" translation (whichever one that might be), somehow increases our spiritual stature even one iota. I remember when I was so arrogant as to think that if it wasn't the KJV, then you weren't really reading the Bible--until I realized that the KJV was only a translation itself.

So, having said all of that, I have no problem with the Message Bible, because I have an unswerving trust in the promised Holy Spirit to teach me what I need to know. As someone said once, "the best version of the Bible is the one that you will read."

Lastly, I will say that this Bible is a parallel Bible. The text of the NIV and the Message are laid out side-by-side so that a reader can do an easy comparison. This method is a valuable aide to Bible study. I would defintely recommend this Bible both as your primary study Bible (since it contains an actual translation) or as a study aid to add to your library.

5 out of 5 stars Very convenient comparison.......2007-02-16

This book offers a very convenient way to compare the NIV with The Message which is written in modern English and is not in verse form, because the two versions appear side by side. I like to check the new King James version, too, if I'm really trying to determine meanings and am puzzled, but the two in this book often give me a better understanding of what is being taught.

5 out of 5 stars Love my new bible.......2007-02-11

This was exactly what I wanted.... one bible having both the NIV and The Message. Great item!!

3 out of 5 stars Good Text, Lack of Details on Concurrent Package is a turn off.......2007-09-14

Simply put this book can be viewed from a love it or hate it perspective, but personally when i bought Java Generics and Collections ( O Reilly ) i was impressed by the depth of their coverage, it gave me that inside edge and the internal knowledge of generics and collections ( how they work etc. ) This Book works well in giving what to do, what could have been done better and some portions on Concurrent package, but simply put I AM NOT SATISFIED WITH ITS COVERAGE ON CONCURRENT PACKAGE!. if you stack up generics against this one, i'd say generics is 200% better than this one.

So yea i was a bit disappointed with the book. But hey, nothing works better than the Java Language Spec Third edition =). ( at least it gives you everything exhaustively ).

5 out of 5 stars Avoid those unrepeatable bugs!.......2007-08-22

Java Concurrency in Practice gives very complete coverage on the language's concurrency classes introduced in Java 5 & 6. It shows you the shortcomings of previous attempts at concurrency in earlier versions of the JDK, with great code samples.

This book is pretty comprehensive and goes through the thinking/theory of why things are written the way they are, it is not just a paper version of the JavaDoc reference.
It is also very, very readable. I am by no means experienced in concurrency problems, but it was very easy to follow through the reasoning and examples. (my background is a CS degree and 1.5 years in the industry)

This book is a must read, especially for Java devs. Even if you are not a Java programmer, it could still be an enlightening read because it tells you how to structure your programs to deal with concurrency and how to deal with concurrent stateful apps, which unless you are using Erlang, is something you have to deal with.

4 out of 5 stars beginner-oriented.......2007-07-25

Good book, yet IMO it's too "for beginners". Authors seem to explain things very slowly, perhaps it's great for people with little programming experience, but I found the tempo a bit slow.
I think that Concurrent Programming in Java by Doug Lea is more appealing to experienced developer, unfortunately I don't think there is a new edition out that covers Java 5. When/if new edition comes out, I'll switch, but for now I'd stick with Java Concurrency in Practice.

5 out of 5 stars Teaches clear thinking in thread programming.......2007-06-22

Perfectly lucid style combined with a number of architectural patterns makes this book a treasure. Totally love it.

5 out of 5 stars Very useful book on an increasingly important topic.......2007-06-05

I have been programming in Java for years, and yet I've generally ignored or otherwise avoided dealing with concurrency and synchronization at every opportunity because I found it so daunting. This book broke down that barrier for me and helped me to understand what I needed to do to write correct concurrent programs. In particular, the book provides concrete instructions that I was able to apply to projects that I am working on right now.

I would highly recommend this book to any Java programmer, as you are probably missing out on part of the capabilities of your language (and/or writing incorrect programs!) until you read this. It's probably not a bad lesson for developers of concurrent software in any language, but the concrete instructions regarding Java were really the most valuable part of the book to me.

Book Description

The only complete interlinear Bible available in English—and it's keyed to Strong's Exhaustive Concordance! Thousands of pastors, students, and laypeople have found The Interlinear Bible to be a time-saving tool for researching the subtle nuances and layers of meaning within the original biblical languages. Featuring the complete Hebrew and Greek texts with a direct English rendering below each word, it also includes The Literal Translation of the Bible in the outside column. But what truly sets this resource apart are the Strong's numbers printed directly above the Hebrew and Greek words. Strong's numbers enable even those with no prior knowledge of Greek or Hebrew to easily access a wealth of language reference works keyed to Strong's—Greek/ Hebrew dictionaries, analytical lexicons, concordances, word studies, and more.

The Hebrew is based on the Masoretic Text and the Greek is from the Textus Receptus. The sources of the texts are documented in the preface, and are essentially the same (with some minor variations) to the Hebrew and Greek texts used by the KJV translators.

Only a small minority of Bible students ever achieve the ability to read the original biblical languages. This resource offers a non-threatening tool for those lacking language training to begin exploring the languages of Scripture.

• Conveniently includes the entire Hebrew and Greek text of the Bible in one place

• Offering a concise, literal translation of each Greek and Hebrew word, it's a great jumping off point for in-depth Bible study and text analysis.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Great bible study tool!.......2007-09-30

This is a great tool for studying the bible. My only complaint is that the Hebrew text is hard to read because it is small and a bit blurry. This book is the first full interlinear bible that I have seen. It has a pronunciation guide and other grammatical helps in the beginning. It is very good for looking up passages and getting the word for word in the original language. I'm sure it will help me in my study of God's holy and inspired word.

5 out of 5 stars Helpful for a Novice.......2007-08-28

Because I know only a few Hebrew words, this particular format is helpful, as it points me to the Hebrew word I want to look up in my theological dictionaries. When pastors indicate the use of a particular Hebrew word in the text, I like to verify that it actually appears which is more difficult in my KOHLENBERGER because of my incomplete vocabulary. Often times the word is there, but in a different format, so the Green Interlinear is helpful and time saving.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible!.......2007-08-27

The challenge is...how hungry are you for the Word? Reading the Hebrew Old Testament is nothing short of hard-core...especially for someone who doesn't know Hebrew....thankfully the English version is right beneath the Hebrew lexicon....this bible brings about a totally new appreciation for the Word of God and those that recorded it! Not for the faint of heart, or those needing 'large print'...but a definite must have for the seriously seeking!

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Bible.......2007-08-17

I have been a student of the Biblical texts since 2002, having poured through the KJV, MKJV, NLT, NIV and a few others, and I can say this version is superior to any of those, or anything else readily available from retail book stores. I do enjoy the MKJV, as this to me is the next best thing. However, how can you compare having the exact Hebrew and Greek texts right in front of you? This is the problem of modern translations, including the "KJV 1611 AV", which I think is an acceptable copy, but it is not perfect. Why try to imitate the original Old English (which is actually about unreadable being early 17th century English)? It is a form of a transliteration. I have read a Nelson Reprint (an exact copy of the original 1611 Bible), and it is quite different from the modern "KJV 1611 AV".

I am more interested in *exactly* what God said (as is Mr. Green), word for word, than a close translation. So this version is pure gold to me!

5 out of 5 stars Completely Complete.......2007-08-11

Altho the print is small, it has to be to be so complete, it is the perfect book for the person who wants every Hebrew and Greek word in one volume and keyed to the Strong's Concordance! The perfect resource combined with Strong's Concordance for the person that is limited in time but long on wanting to know. Buy it now!

5 out of 5 stars the Key to KJV.......2007-09-19

In my opinion this is the best Bible anyone can get if they are serious about understanding the KJV. The amplified goes along with it very well and basically gives synonyms for certain archaic words and untranslated Hebrew words. Don't get it twisted though... Only the Holy Spirit can give you understanding of God's Word... this just helps from always having to go back to a concordance or Bible dictionary... but those are good tools to have as well... GOD BLESS

5 out of 5 stars Cross Reference.......2007-09-01

4 out of 5 stars Parallel Review.......2007-09-18

I am enjoying this bible and am finding many uses for it. The main time I use it is when putting verses into our church projecton system and finding the version which applies the best. I do find that the footnotes do tend to lack at times, but that could be worked around with other sources. Overall it is a Good Book!

5 out of 5 stars today's parallel bible.......2007-05-12

Very good examples and easy to fine references and very good for those of us who would like to compare different versions for a little better understanding.

4 out of 5 stars Today's Parallel Bible.......2007-03-21

Great parallel Bible!
Good Points:
I think these are four of the best translations available today, although if I had my choice I might have picked the ESV or the HCSB instead of the NLT, although I love the NLT and already own a well used copy. However, I've been led to believe this is most likely the NLT before the 2004 update.

Questionable or bad points:
The bonded burgandy leather cover(the only available cover other than hardcover) is thin and cheap looking and almost feels like plastic. Why Zondervan would not offer at least a genuine leather cover for a Bible with this much bulk is beyond me. I have written Zondervan and was told that my comments were forwarded to "the Bible dept" but have not received and most likely won't receive a response. I have already glued the back binding just for my own peace of mind, which may have strenghthened it but at the expense of looks. In addition, as stated on other reviews there are no maps, no concordance, not much room for notes and pretty much no way to personalize it in any way - just four marvelous translations of God's Word. There is a 1/2" margin that you can try to cram notes into and if you use highlighters make sure you use the dry variety, these pages are very thin and bleed easily.

Even though it seems on this review my complaints out number my positives that is far from the truth it reality. I knew what I was getting into before purchasing this HUGE Bible and gave it my best shot at taking it with me nearly everywhere like I do with other Bibles, but the size and weight got the best of me. Also the font size is too small for my taste, so I keep it in my library now for reference and enjoyment.

5 out of 5 stars Great Buy!!.......2007-02-24

And the special features of the Amplified Bible help you unlock the original meaning of key words and phrases.

When you want to study the Bible in depth, comparing different Bible translations helps you discover the different nuances of meaning in the text. The translation committees for each Bible version chose different ways of translating the original Scripture texts into English. By comparing them, you can get a more complete understanding of what the original writers intended without having to learn Hebrew, Aramaic, or Greek. And the Amplified Bible’s unique system of punctuation, italics, and references helps you take your study a step further, allowing you to unlock subtle shades of meaning found in the original languages. The Comparative Study Bible offers easy access to four distinctive translations in clear, easy-to-read print.

Comparative Study Bible includes:

New International Version: Today’s bestselling translation, offering a unique combination of scholarly accuracy and easy readability. The balance of word-for-word and thought-for-thought approach to translation allows today’s reader to better understand and apply the intended meaning of the original Bible writers in contemporary language. The NIV is today’s most read, most trusted English translation.

King James Version: The classic, word-for-word translation, beloved by Christians through the centuries for its dignity, poetic language and timeless truths. Nearly four hundred years after it first appeared, the language of the KJV is still vivid, powerful, and pleasurable to the ear.

New American Standard Bible, Updated Edition: The most literal word-for-word English translation available, updated to provide greater clarity of meaning. Vocabulary, grammar, and sentence structure have been carefully revised to improve readability. The 1995 version includes extensively revised notes with new information about the ancient manuscripts.

Amplified Bible: Using a system of parentheses, italics, and brackets this precise word-for-word version captures more the meaning behind the original Greek and Hebrew. With the Amplified Bible, you don’t need a scholarly background in the original languages to grasp the nuances and meanings of the text. 4 out of 5 stars Good Parallel Bible.......2007-09-27

If you're looking for a few good translations in the same volume, this is the book for you. It's useful as a study Bible...the different translations give you better insight as to what the original authors were saying. The Amplified includes a few commentary clips and cross-references to explain some more difficult passages.

Remember, though, that it is strictly four versions of the Bible. There is no concordance, and there are no study helps outside of the limited footnotes.

You definitely can't beat the size, considering that you're really carrying four Bibles around. I'm pleased with the purchase!

5 out of 5 stars Phenomenal!.......2007-08-27

Do you LOVE the Word of God? Does the thought of hearing Him speak through the pages of a book simply thrill you? Are you curious as to all the differences between the translations? If you answered yes to any of these questions, then you really need to get this bible...when used in bible study (individual or group) this comparative bible brings His Word alive like never before...talk about a conversation piece...this is it! I purchased this bible along with the Interlinear Bible-Hebrew-Greek-English and the Essential Evangelical Parallel Bible, the tri-combo has taken our studies to a completely different level! Our discussions and admiration of God Almighty has reached new heights! If you get this bible, you definitely will not regret it!

5 out of 5 stars excellent tool to help your understanding.......2007-07-16

It has helped me tremendously to have multiple translations at hand in my studies. Most places they simply add depth of understanding to each other, but, in several passages, they seem to say completely different things. It is my opinion that until we meet God, nobody on earth can have perfect understanding of the Bible, but this one helps you get a little closer.

4 out of 5 stars Totally Comparative.......2007-05-21

I love the completeness of the bible, only problem is that the writing is too small for me. It is unfortunate because if the writing or the font was larger it would be a huge book. Still, a good purchase

4 out of 5 stars excellent resource.......2007-03-22

This Bible is an excellent way to get 4 of the best Bible translations all together in one place. It makes it very simple to compare verses without having four separate Bibles open. I plan on taking it to Bible College with me this fall in order to save space that would have been needed for four separate Bibles. The burgandy leather cover is very nice. My only negative comment would be the small print, but I realize that with four complete translations, it would end up being a huge book if the print were larger.

4 out of 5 stars Read this book.......2007-10-07

This is a very good book: It will start teaching you how to think about parallel programming and will help you get started in this area.

Why only four stars you may ask? The trouble is that after over 40 years knowledge about parallel programming is still weak. The scientific computation folks have their (often heavy duty) tricks of the trade, but, as another reviewer pointed out, parallel computing is much more and is starting to address much broader areas.

This book will help you wade through the maze of confusion and will help you get oriented - that is of a huge help. Then you need to practice...

4 out of 5 stars A good start.......2006-10-09

Parallel programming has been around for years, in many different forms. It has usually been a specialty for supercomputing number crunchers and for the occasional OS geek. Now that traditional, single-processor solutions are hitting the wall, Moore's Law must grow in new directions: multithreaded processos, multi-cores, multi-processors, and wilder exotica. The hardware is entering the market now, and the software community is scrambling to develop the necessry skills for parallel program development. This book gives a fair introduction to a large range of the techniques available.

After getting the reader oriented to the basics of parallel programming, the authors lay out four "design spaces," or families of related patterns. Within each space, the authors present a handful of patterns using a common and reasonably familiar format: name, problem addressed, context, forces acting on the design, the solution, and examples of the pattern's usage. They identify spaces named Finding Concurrency, Algorithm Structure, Supporting Structures, and Implementation Mechanisms. Of course, these topics overlap to some extend, especially in the interplay of algorithm design and explitable parallelism, or in langauge and API primitives that blur support mechanisms available with the implemenation choices available to the programmer. The authors show how the pieces come together in familiar applications, including molecular dynamics and medical imaging applications. Appendices sketch the basic programming constructs available in three of the major parallelism toolkits around: OpenMP, MPI, and Java.

Although valuable, this book has a number of weaknesses. For example, they cite the Cooley-Tukey FFT algorithm as a winning example of "Divide and Conquer." It's a great example, but perhaps not the one most useful for didactic purposes. The FFT algortithm is brilliant, and based on deep insight combined with total fluency in handling combinations of trig functions. Programmers writing parallel code will always benefit in proportion to their understanding of the algorithms, but I would find it discouraging to think that mastery and creativity at Cooley and Tukey's level were requisite. The authors skip over the kinds of fine-grained parallelism and communication available in emerging platforms, such as FPGA- and GPU-based accelerators. At the opposite end of the spectrum, they also gloss over many of the management issues in grid computing, where parallelism is extremely coarse-grained. I also have reservations about some of the system primitives they identify as patterns - one may as well say that a "for" loop is a pattern, even though it's a primitive in nearly all programming languages.

Despite flaws, the authors do reasonably well at introducing a wide range of basics for writing parallel programs. The interested beginner will need a lot more information to put the ideas to use, but this is a fair start.

5 out of 5 stars Good book for parallel computing.......2005-11-24

This is an excellent introduction to parallel computing. It presents patterns for discovering what can be parallized, what data structures can be used, how to choose algorithms. Patterns are demonstrated by good examples showing benefits and trade-offs of different solutions. There is also a brief, but very useful introduction to common implementations: OpenMP, MPI, and regular procedural approach demonstrated with Java.

Some caution about what this book is not: this is not a general parallel programming designand patterns book (as I expected from the title). The focus of this book is parallel computing (i.e. scalable _calculations_, often scientific). There is somewhat more to parallel _programming_ than this book covers.

Still, I found this book very good and useful, even though I expected broader coverage.

5 out of 5 stars a pattern language.......2004-12-31

This book tries to do for parallel programming what the seminal Gang of Four book did for sequential programming. While it remains to be seen if Mattson, Sanders and Massingill will succeed, their book serves a vital educational role.

Until the 90s, parallel programming was relatively rare. But as hardware continued to get cheaper, many practical uses emerged. The authors point out that the bottleneck has now shifted to software. How does one find concurrency in a design? And given this, how to code it? The book tackles both issues. The latter is treated by explaining how to use MPI, OpenMP and Java for parallel coding. Where MPI and OpenMP were expressly made for this task. And with Java, the book discusses its concurrency classes and how these can be applied to parallel problems.

The former issue of somehow finding concurrency is harder. This is really a wetware issue. You are the wetware. The book's core value is in showing common parallel patterns, that distills the essence of much previous work in the field. Plus, the book is not just iterating through a list of such patterns. As with the GoF, we have a pattern language. A metalevel, in which a walkthrough of the patterns and comparing these with your problem, helps you find appropriate patterns to map it to.

5 out of 5 stars excellent authoritative reference.......2007-04-11

I first used this set at Duke U. in 1961. Over the years since then, the results of new research and new thought have been added. It remains one of the better Biblical study tools. And it is quite readable.

The price I paid was substantially below the publisher's price.

5 out of 5 stars Expensive but invaluable Bible commentary.......2007-02-28

The NIB commentary (in twelve volumes or CD-ROM) is basically an extremely comprehensive historical-critical commentary on the entire Bible, including all the books of the OT including the apocryphal books, and also the entire New Testament. The commentary brings together dozens of biblical scholars from different Christian confessions, ranging from Evangelical and Pentecostal Christians to Anglican, Catholic and Orthodox scholars. The series also includes a number of essays on various academic and technical points, ranging from hermenutical theories of Biblical interpretation to feminist questions about biblical interpretation and so on.

While at times the overly-liberal agenda of some of the commentators can get a bit tiresome, overall the quality of the commentary is outstanding from both a theological and scholarly perspective, and incorporates the most up to date knowledge of the historical and cultural context of the scripture as well as useful reflections on how it can be applied to modern-day life.

The main drawback of this series is its heavy expense, which would put it out of reach of many individual buyers, though in my experience this set is quite easily found in most good university theology libraries, catechist resource centres, and in many parish libraries. Along with the Jerome Bible commentary and a good study Bible, this set in my view is essential reading for any priest, seminarian, theologian or theology student, and also any lay Christian interested in deeping their own faith or in a role where scriptural study or interpretation is required, including Ministry leaders, Bible Study Group leaders, RCIA team leaders and members, or catechists in any Christian denomination. If you have a difficult or obscure point in scripture and are uncertain, these volumes certainly help to get the context and message right, along with useful hints and reflections which would be useful in making a homily or sermon.

4 out of 5 stars Could have better layout.......2006-11-10

The amount and quality of information is incredible. But it's pretty hard to read any significant amount of the actual biblical text because they break it up every few verses for commentary and reflection.

4 out of 5 stars Excellent, But Expensive, Resource...........2005-12-22

.... and it takes up a whole shelf in my library....

I would like to give this 4 1/2 stars, but five is too many.

This is the best Bible commentary I have used. It is not constrained by length as so many are. The dual NIV/NRSV is plus, and of course I read my NJB along with it.

I absolutely love the depth of analysis, particularly of the OT Hebrew (I have yet to use this much in the NT, having just started with the set a few months ago). Allowing the author a "personal reflections" section is a nice plus. Even when I don't agree with the reflection, it stirs good internal debate, and is a source of discussion questions for adult Sunday School.

The inclusion of the Dueterocanonicals is also welcome as these are unfortunately missing from most Protestant commentaries.

The one negative is that some of the commentary is a little liberal (in some cases, even feminist - e.g., Phyllis Trible) for me, but it does nicely balance out the more conservative International Bible Encyclopedia and the International Bible Commentary. Overall though, as the next reviewer points out, the scholars involved in NIB are from a range of theological camps.

This work is also available on CD for a little less, but in the end I decided I like hard copy better.

This was a LOT of work and all those involved in producing it are to be praised for their efforts!

5 out of 5 stars Great Value for money.......2007-10-05

If you have his earlier book, OWI Practical guide to Performance Diagnostics and Tuning, you know KG's style. This book is equally good. As you come to expect of him the book is concise, precise, relevant and lucid.

You are low level, mid level or senior level DBA, there are chapters that are of interest to you. I found Part IV, covering Advanced Concepts in RAC very interesting. With his in depth coverage on Cache Coherency, GES & GCS he lays a solid foundation. The ice on the cake is Chapter 12 - Closer look at Cache fusion. Your money gets more than its worth on this chapter alone - if you ask me. The hands on approach for cache fusion are remarkable. Work load and connection management as well RAC troubleshooting are very helpful too.

In a nutshell, you will not be disappointed and it is worth more than its price.

5 out of 5 stars Conceptually strong.......2007-08-30

Equating technology to any sport, you succeed when the fundamentals are strong.

This books takes a wonderful step towards elucidating fundamental concepts of Oracle RAC, its evolution from OPS, separation from OPS and how RAC has evolved into a leading technology.

Part 1 is a quick primer of clustering technolgies and HA concepts. There is a detailed parallel drawn between OPS and RAC and elucidated in a very clear manner. These concepts are then tailored into the RAC architecture chapter which explains the RAC architecture in detail and the components that make up RAC.

Part 2 , once you are armed with the architectural concepts, dives into elucidating the Installation procedures and takes us through an Oracle RAC setup detailing the steps.

Part 3, chapters 7 and 8 give you a thorough run down of basic and advanced Oracle RAC administration.

Chapters 9 onwards is when the author differentiates himself from the other text on the same subject. While its easy to say Oracle RAC backup and recovery works the same with some differences or to say Cache Fusion is how we move the blocks around, its another thing to conceptualize this and the authoer excels in presenting these concepts in a very natural flow. Bringing to light these concepts and delving deeper into GRD, RAC Performance Management etc, the author sets a high standard.

Finally, when watching a show, the artists hope to leave the audience wanting for more rather than thinking when are they going to stop...On the same note, Gopal has left us wanting for more with this wonderful book.

5 out of 5 stars Very well written and highly informative.......2007-07-20

When I first received this book after ordering it from Amazon, my initial feeling was disappointment. "It's too thin", I thought. A subject like RAC needs a much bigger tome. Well, I was wrong.

By concentrating his work specifically on RAC, Mr. Gopalakrishnan has been able to thoroughly cover his subject in a relatively thin volume. But, be warned. This is not a book for beginners nor is it a book about Oracle in general. It is specifically about RAC, how a lot of it works under the covers. For those people who are interested in the subject, it is an invaluable resource. The chapters on the Global Resource Directory and Cache Fusion are worth the price, alone. I was also quite happy to see chapters on installation and ASM management. There are plenty of installation guides available on the web, but it was nice to see the author's version of it. After all, you can't work on a RAC database without first installing it. Mr. Gopalakrishnan understands that.

There isn't much to complain about here and a ton to compliment. The book has already helped me in understanding some of the problems I have encountered with the RAC database I am currently managing. Needless to say, I highly recommend it.

I have a number of books on Oracle, some good and some bad. This book has a place on my shelf next to the books written by Kyte, Millsap and Lewis. That would be in the "good" category, for those who don't know. The very, very good category. :-)

5 out of 5 stars Extremely well written with tremendous in-depth coverage of RAC internals.......2007-04-24

By far, the best book I have read on the subject of Oracle10g RAC. Given the success of Gopalakrishnan as coauthor of the book "Oracle Wait Interface: A Practical Guide to Performance Diagnostics & Tuning", I was eager to see his work on a subject as involved as Oracle10g RAC. I am happy to say that Gopal did an outstanding and thorough job! Every chapter of this book is clear and well written with accurate demonstrations and valuable illustrations. This book is for both beginners as well as seasoned Oracle professions.

What I found most useful was the in-depth coverage of Cache Fusion and Global Resource Directory as well as a thorough troubleshooting section. The author also provides extensive coverage on installation and architecture concerns, backup and recovery in RAC, performance monitoring, workload balancing and distribution, connection management, as well as application development and extensions to the RAC architecture. Oracle's Automatic Storage Management (ASM) feature is fully explained as well as many other basic and advanced administration topics.

The only area of improvement I would suggest is greater coverage on backing up and recovering the two key Oracle Clusterware shared components: the Voting Disk and the Oracle Cluster Registry File. Although the book does contain information pertaining to backing up and recovering these resources, I felt that these two files are critical enough to the operation of Oracle Clusterware that a full working example would be helpful. Possibly a workshop that fully details how to recover a voting disk and cluster registry file after the loss of both files.

I would highly recommend this book to DBA's and Developers tasked with working in an Oracle10g RAC environment. You will not be disappointment!

5 out of 5 stars Everything you ever wanted to know about RAC and more............2007-03-04

Just got this much expected book from Gopal! Absolutely fantastic...It is certainly very detailed and in-depth was my immediate impression.

Many topics are detailed, exhaustive and to the point. It is different to the other RAC books available in the market and also this book is platform independent. I am very impressed with this one because it is unique and the style of writing is great, not to mention the depth and clarity of the chapters.

I would like to agree with the other person who has commented that we need lot of attention and concentration to read this book. If you have a RAC database, nothing like it to try the example demonstrations provided in the book.

Not everyone will be fortunate to have a 4 node RAC to test the possible cache fusion scenarios explained in this book. But the author has prepared a very effective demonstration to reveal the internal operations of the cache fusion. A lot of topics like internal of resource mastering/remastering, two pass recovery and past images are dealt to the core. Another unique in the book is a discussion on extended RAC (most commonly known as stretch clusters or geo clusters) and discussions on Application development for RAC.

Overall, it is an excellent text on RAC and worth for your investment on Time and money. There are so less books with good quality and content. It is worth the wait and I hope you won't be disappointed.

Book Description

Recorded history is a finely-woven magic fabric of intricate lies about events predating the sixteenth century. There is not a single piece of evidence that can be reliably and independently traced back earlier than the eleventh century. This book details events that are substantiated by hard facts and logic, and validated by new astronomical research and statistical analysis of ancient sources.

Yes, we can all agree that mainstream history is nearly 100% BS due to politics, economics, ego, problems with dating techniques, and various conspiracies. Agreed. But, I've been researching the distinct possibility that human history (in terms of civilizations) are much more ancient than we've been told, so coming across this book was very interesting to me. I wondered how Fomenko could be wrong (if at all) because he is very persuasive in his presentations. Then it dawned on me. If at previous times in prehistory, due to the various catastrophies that are well documented (comets, asteroids, planetary disruptions, plasma discharge, pole reversals, etc) the Earth was in a different position in relation to the sun, different tilt on its axis, different orbit, different rotation (in terms of velocity and DIRECTION), and the continents were in different positions, then would this not cause the ancients to see the sky (constellations) differently? In other words, is Fomenko making erronious assumptions about the physics of the Earth in pre-history, which then corrupt his data with regards to dating the relevant astrology? The last event to seriously disrupt our planet occured roughly 3500 years ago, according to other good researchers, so is it possible Fomenko has been confused by this? The vastly different physics of our planet in the not so distant past may explain this confusion, which is not to say the "mainstream" version of history is correct; on the contrary. I am not an expert in these fields, but wanted to see if this idea could spark discussion.

5 out of 5 stars Pants on fire?.......2007-07-19

Will people ever read before spamming? Yes, Jesuits could not rewrite world history alone, they had help. Anyway, Dr Prof Acad A.Fomenko does not point to jesuits as the driving force of world wide history manipulation in published volumes 1,2,3;, actually he barely mentions the poor devils. Check it with 'Search inside' feature, please. China is rarely mentioned either, in fact, Dr Fomenko is completely eurocentric. Right, his theory contradicts all mainstream schools of history, because in their actual state they are all built on blatantly erroneus chronology. You don't need a mysterious cabal (conspiracy) to falsify history, the falsification is its modus operandi. It is inherent to history(ians) to falsify (distort) events, as it is inherent to humans to boast as it is inherent to power (authority) to legimize itself by referrring to glorious past made to its own order. Dr Prof Fomenko and team have identified scores of instances of such manipulation in Russian, European, etc.. history, and delivered valid statistical proof thereof. His own 'reconstruction' is completely another story. Forget c14 as a valid method of dating. W.Libby has initially discovered a brilliant method of INDEPENDENT dating. Too bad, c14 method has become a joke after a forced marrige with dendrochronology with consensual chronological scale inbuilt. Radiocarbon method can't stand blind tests, but is so very productive as a rubberstamp.

5 out of 5 stars Accepted History & Chronology Must Be Changed. .......2007-04-09

There is no doubt that history as most know it is a sham, & institution's version of History both University & Church is fradulent & inaccurate. Everything was established with an agenda, The real "Dark Ages" are now when we have access to incredible amounts of information past authorities & more important 'common folk' didn't have but our institutions & educators are slow to evolve because of what has ignorantly & arrogantly been taught for too long. This is on many subjects not just Chronology.

For anyone to question "Why would a Mathematician have anything credible to say of History?" The answer is from Dr. Fomenko's preface in the book: "It would be worthwhile to remind the reader that in the XVI-XVII century Chronology was considered to be a subdivision of Mathematics." These volumes could possibly be some of the most important works to date & should be read by everyone with an interest in History, especially professors & educators who have a duty to the public. I have read both books & must say that 'Chronology 1' has some very eye opening & revolutionary information. Even if these volumes are part true the implications are profound & opens the doors to further investigations & questions which must be done. I speak several different lanquages & must say the logic Dr. Fomenko uses with "inflection" of words & words being read from left to right in one region & right to left in another then written backwards, the removal of vowels & get down to basics of words, or different cities & locations having the same name etc. is correct. Vowel usage has always been optional & varied, actually complicating linquistics & study. The first thing one has to understand is that words never had a fixed spelling in history like we do now, the spelling of words was mutable & regional, as well as names & titles of people were vast, varied & changed, NOTHING WAS FIXED or understood linear. Matters of Life & Death as well as financial profiteering yesterday & today were & are made with ignorant, illogical & conspiratorial views of history & reality, it's time people get closer to the Truth & society collectively grow up.

5 out of 5 stars Very Interesting.......2007-03-07

It is a good proposal and I believe it will mature into something even better in the future. I think it deserves to be read.

4 out of 5 stars History as Science Fiction.......2007-01-10

Anatoly Fomenko has written a very intriguing book, full of pictures, charts, and computer 'proof' of his thesis: backwards of AD900 we don't really know what happened or when. Between AD900 and AD1600 there is more certainty, but there is still a lot of fuzzy ground, and things don't get reliable until we get past the 1600's where the printing press made it very difficult for the perpetrators of this timeline manipulation to change anything that had been committed to print. The Dark Ages did not happen. Books were burned for a reason. One organization has doubled the actual length of its existence by expanding the real chronology. Read why.

I had always wondered why Christ died about AD33 and yet men waited until the 11th century to form the Knights Templar, the Cathars, etc and go after the Holy Land by force. Why the 1000 year gap? Turns out there wasn't more than a 10-12 year gap and he proves it using astronomy. This also implies that the planet is not as old as we have been told, and current Christian and other creationist scientists are already championing that idea without being aware of Fomenko's book. The two groups, creationist scientists and the Russian mathematical analysts corroborate each other. Fascinating.

Of course, all this flies in the face of what we have been told traditionally is the 'proper' chronology of western civilization, and most readers will experience 'cognitive dissonance' in reading this book. It means that our history going backwards from AD1600 becomes progressively more incorrect and unreliable until it cannot be trusted at all... in the space of 700-800 years.

Naturally, the curious, open-minded reader will want to know WHO did this, WHY, and did any of the events we think of as really ancient ever happen?
Dr. Fomenko is a respected scientist/mathematician at Moscow State University who has already answered these questions to the satisfaction of his initially skeptical colleagues. Most of them are now believers, a few still refuse to believe (the usual diehards), and of course the western press has ignored Fomenko's work -- for obvious reasons when you read the book. The ones who perpetrated this chronology ruse have a lot to answer for. They are still with us. That's why this book is a well-kept secret.

I gave the book a 4-star rating because I was unable to check out some of his claims; those I checked were as he said. But if even 1/3 of his claims are true, this punches a big hole in what we think is our history, the meaning of western civilization, our educational process (for repeating the ruse as gospel), and the trustworthiness of the organization that perpetrated this ruse, well-intentioned or not.

This book relates to current research into a Young Earth paradigm, to John Keel's discoveries about our planet, and Fr Malachi Martin's insights (in his now out-of-print books). We are indeed sheep who are manipulated and kept ignorant -- for a reason. While knowing what these men have to say may be the "booby prize" (as in: 'what can you do with this knowledge?'), it will provide interesting reading. Didn't someone say: "...and the Truth will set you free."?? For you to judge if this book contains the truth.
