Popular radio host Michael Savage returns to print with another attack on the forces of liberalism that he believes are tearing America apart. Using the same brash, abrasive style in his writing that has become a trademark of his radio show, he writes that "the Left operates specifically to undermine God, country, family, and the military" and that liberalism is "either treason or insanity" or "a mental disorder." He also takes on illegal immigration, the state of health care in the U.S., the "Hollywood Idiots," and the decline of schools and morality in general, all of which he blames on Liberals. Savage also drops bombshells such as: "Federal courts and judges in America today are to be more feared than al-Qaida," and Ruth Bader Ginsberg's appointment to the Supreme Court is "akin to appointing the general counsel of the Ku Klux Klan to the bench."
Statements as bombastic as these deserve to be backed up with substance and well-thought out arguments, yet Savage offers little more than an anecdote or two before moving on to the next rant. This is not to say he doesn't make some good points or highlight blatant abuses by government, questionable suits brought by the ACLU, or morally bankrupt product coming out of Hollywood, but one can't help noticing that several shades of gray have been left out of his black-and-white arguments. Due to this lack of hard facts and background, Savage's book is not particularly convincing. Still, Savage does consistently challenge readers with controversial opinions and conclusions, so it would be a shame for potential readers to dismiss his book simply on ideological grounds alone. And if he really sets your blood boiling, you can always call him up on his show and take him to task. --Shawn Carkonen
Book Description
Talk radio sensation and
New York Times bestselling author Michael Savage again goes for the jugular in this latest brash, incendiary attack on the corrosive effects of liberalism on our culture. Where
The Savage Nation took shots at everything under the political spectrum, this book focuses squarely on the dangers assailing the cornerstones of American life, pointing out how liberal propaganda and agendas are seeping into our churches, our schools, even our families. Bold, sometimes angry, and always controversial, this book is pure, no-holds-barred Michael Savage, one of the strongest, most original voices in America today.

Savagely Unsatisfying.......2007-08-24
Before writing my review of this book, I should like to make one thing clear: I owe a tremendous debt to Michael Savage. Listening to him was what first made me question the liberal nonsense which I was being fed in high school, and now that I have swung fully to the other side of the spectrum, he is still a joy to listen to, if a touch over-the-top at times. As such, when I opened this book, I expected to enjoy it. Certainly, I was prepared for a moment or two of thought-provoking shock, since Mr. Savage is a master of delivering such a thing on his radio show, but that was a risk I was prepared to take, because I was sure that Mr. Savage's voice would translate very well into the written medium.
I was sadly mistaken. Reading this book felt to me like reading some horrible, unholy union of a drunken rant, a war cry and a speech by some vilified totalitarian demagogue. Every page seems to shriek with rage and irrationality. It is a sad disappointment.
Needless to say, Mr. Savage is a far better talk show host than author. What this book does, however, is unveil Mr. Savage's long forgotten socialist roots, for the style of argumentation is one far more familiar to those on the left than those on the right. For instance, Mr. Savage does not even bother to intellectually attack his opponents. Rather, he accuses them of supporting pedophilia, drugs and perversion simply for objecting to certain expansions of government power. His opposition on this point, ironically enough, invokes a quote from the great libertarian economist Frederic Bastiat, who wrote:
"Every time we object to a thing being done by the government, the socialists conclude that we object to it being done at all. We object to a state sponsored education. Then the socialists say we are against education. We object to a state sponsored morality. Then the socialists say we want no morality at all. We object to a state enforced equality. Then the socialists say we are against equality. It is as though the socialists were to accuse us of wanting people to starve because we do not want the state to raise grain."
Similarly, Mr. Savage concludes that because the ACLU opposes giving policemen drastically increased powers, they want perverts and druggies to walk free. What he conveniently ignores, of course, is that no one, policemen included, will always use their powers for good. This is not to say that I do not find his critique of the ACLU to be true. I merely find it to be sloppy. The argument against the ACLU is infinitely more complex than a simple false dichotomy which places pedophiles on one side and good people on the other. Mr. Savage does his allies in the conservative movement no good by spewing this oversimplified invective into the air. Rather, he makes us look like the idiots which so many left wing college professors imagine us to be.
This brings me to a larger problem with Mr. Savage's book - it employs the sloppiest of argumentation techniques. Rather than attack arguments, what it does is attack imagined motivations. For instance, rather than shoot down the argument against prayer in schools on an intellectual level, Mr. Savage complains that the Left hates God. Anyone who has ever heard of the Reverend William Sloane Coffin or liberation theology knows this is not universally true (unless one imagines that Richard Dawkins speaks for the entire left wing). I have already touched on Mr. Savage's rather unfair treatment of the opponents of the patriot act (not all of whom are Leftists, incidentally - unless you consider the CATO Institute to be leftist). Besides this, Mr. Savage shows himself to be a hypocrite. He spends a good portion of his book ranting about how we need to shut down the "traitors" in our midst, but warns critics in his introduction that any sort of criticism of him shows them to be "brownshirts." Obviously, many of Mr. Savage's critics are fascistic in nature, but the hypocritical nature of the message, coming as it does in the preface to a book whose entire purpose is to demonize dissenters, makes Mr. Savage's otherwise persuasive argument look weak. Again, Mr. Savage is not doing himself or the conservative movement any favors.
I will continue listening to Michael Savage, however. I shan't buy any more of his books, but I shall listen to him. I would suggest, however, that Mr. Savage listen to the likes of William F. Buckley Jr. and Bill Bennett. Perhaps if he imitates them, he will stop exposing his own psychological nudity and expose the rather more unattractive intellectual foolishness of the Left. Those looking for an intellectual attack on liberalism, look somewhere else. Those looking for a scream of rage permeated with demagoguery, you have found the book of your dreams.
Savage tells it like it is!.......2007-06-27
Michael Savage, egomaniacal radio shockjock.... speaks the TRUTH, but I actually prefer his books over his radio tirades. Why? Because on the radio he tends to spend too much time going 'me me me me me' and ranting and raving. He must be something like bipolar. He is soooo much better when he is calm and collected. Obviously he has an iq above 200 (I should know, so do I... whoops, there's that 'me me me' thang, heh heh). BUT in his books, you get the gist of what he says on the radio, but calmly, collectedly... you have time to review, to muse, to draw your own conclusions. Michael Savage sees what's happening to the greatest country in the world (in case you cain't figgur it out, I mean the US of A)... we need to close our borders, we need to treat illegal aliens as the FELONS they are, not give them 'amnesty', we need to understand the threat of invasion by illegal aliens to our core structure (taxes, healthcare, physical safety, first-worlder thinking) by third-worlders. We need to STOP calling them 'emerging nations' unless you mean 'poking their slime-covered heads out of the cesspools of the third worlds. We need to understand the threat to our sophisticated, spiritual way of life by hardcore muslims, by practicing homosexuals, by liberals who don't believe there is 'absolute truth' and who practice 'political correctness' with the apparent goal of utter destruction of our great great country and way of life. We need to really support our troops who are out there fighting a war to save our way of life. We need to let the soldiers FIGHT not wait to get shot before firing back.
As a woman, I have worked in Saudi Arabia, I KNOW the real, not imagined, threat and brutality of islam which cares nothing for the rights of women and children. We need to understand the current 'agenda' of the Bush family (god help me I voted for that sinister idiot). We need to stop the governmental entities from stealing our freedom and way of life, little by little, step by step until we will be living in a modern-day nazi germany as so many peoples in other countries around the world live today.
Michael Savage for President!!!!! He speaks for me, he doesn't think for me, but he DOES speak, and so very well, what I think. Go Michael Go!!!! Great Book by a brilliant man who isn't afraid to speak the truth. Rush Limbaugh could learn so much from Michael.
Not even wrong, just insane.......2007-06-24
Michael Weiner-Savage, the blathering radio entertainer, now sets himself up as America's political and social conscience. Unfortunately for those who think he has anything relevant to contribute, Weiner is poorly qualified to pass judgement on the issues. In his book, he offers copious opinions, and practically no evidence to back up anything he asserts. In fact, he is SO far off base that he isn't even wrong. He's incoherent. His anger has made him irrational.
Apparently, there is a sizable audience for angry, incoherent ramblings. And that folks, is a sad observation on the state of public discourse in our country today. Demagogues like Weiner-Savage and other "hate radio" jocks have very successfully turned Americans against one another with their divisive tirades.
Good Reading for True Americans.......2007-06-13
Very well written. Great explanations of topics. Unfortunately, very true!
You should read it to understand the deep end........2007-06-07
It is amazing that many reviews have praised the amount of anecdotal evidence that Savage offers. Indeed, there are plentiful amounts of anecdotal evidence, back to back. Savage makes a compelling argument. That is, if you're a dim-witted idiot.
Savage rarely points out any statistics, or backing of his information. That's because he can't. Statistics would show a much clearer point, not one where he describes an illegal immigrant stealing all of his finances, a story which would be impossible to check. Savage writes with no coherent thought. Any student of economics or math would be thoroughly unimpressed with this book. There is lack of logic and reason behind his arguments.
Do you argue against globalization because one person loses their job while hundreds have a better standard of living? Evidently, Savage does. His attack on American colleges talks about the increase of sexual activity on campus. Please, it was similar twenty years back. Of course, he pipes about how he wanted to attend an Ivy League but was too expensive. Please, if he was as poor as he claims, financial aid was back then as it was now, college was much cheaper, and to be accepted into Ivy League, many students there have the ability to "think." Savage toots his own horn pretending that he could have gone to an Ivy League. He references Queen College, his alma matter, as formerly being excellent and today a relic of what it was. Please, Queens College has done significantly better since you were there Savage. You just can't admit that you went to what was a college that could never compete with an Ivy League. Queen's endowment is at $687,000, less than your house, - you have probably not given a penny back. Savage's pretentious attitude wants to come across to the reader that he was smart. Please, don't believe it.
I'm a neoconservative, and Savage probably hates me too. Yet, the causes that he lists, take for instance the issues he's had with law is ridiculous! It has NEVER in the history of law been up to the judge to decide how they "feel." A judge should only decide the facts of each course. How they are presented is up to each individual lawyer. The author of this book eloquently (which I mean by yelling at on the page) forgets that. Savage feels that the judge should sit down and think about how he "feels" about each case. Oh wait, aren't those judges of corrupt countries? When the judge decides its "fair" because he just received $500 underneath the table? Judges should look to only evidence and not emotional reason.
Read through his book carefully. Look for statistics (you won't find any!). It's easy to be blinded as he rampages off. Savage writes quickly, jumping from idea to idea, without coherent reason. As a result, you are not "thinking" about he's saying. Many of you are mindlessly following. Congrats.
Fear the ideologues and fear the demagogues said Jefferson. Amazon readers, have you heeded this advice?

Are you willing to combat the Enemy Within?.......2007-05-15
Friends, if you are like me, you have looked at your Christian walk in this sex-saturated, me-first, convenience-oriented, I'm-OK-You're-OK world and wondered why you don't seem to have the faith or the purity of heart possessed by Paul or Timothy, Peter, James, or the other martyrs. If you're like me, you've grown content to have a less than obedient, less than satisfying, less than life-changing walk with Christ. And maybe at some point you've thought, "I am sick of sin and I want to know Christ better!" only to slip quietly back into your self-indulgent lifestyle. Worst of all, perhaps you've expected the Holy Spirit to sanctify you passively, so that you don't have to be involved or get your hands dirty.
If so, then this book may be the springboard for a changed life. Learn what sin is--how detestable it is to God, how powerful it is in each of us, how it quietly appeals to us and blinds us to what God really has intended for His children, and then discover tools you can use to change.
I know that my walk will not be the same after reading this book and doing the exercises. It is so easy to read and makes so much sense; I can't believe I was this blind to what sin really is. But now I see.
Kill Sin!.......2007-03-19
That's what we thought we should have printed on our next bumper stickers (those of us who have them) after several of us in our congregation read this book recently. Though the work will be hard, the inspiration that Lundgaard gives from Scripture makes you truly want to pursue with the Spirit the righteousness of God. This book, which is very accessible but with much depth, does not condemn, but it sure does challenge!
A soon to be Classic.......2005-10-14
This book has to be one of the most outstanding books I have read in a long time. What a clear and well ilustrated book. I have used it's contents in my messages, in my counseling sessions and have given it as a reading assignment to my students. It has the makings of a classic.

Wow - Great Book!!.......2005-09-16
I loved this book!!! I have been very frustrated and confused lately watching the behavior of Christians around me. This books helps explains some of what is going on. Instead of just blaming the devil and the world for our sin, he talks about another element...that battle we all have with the flesh.
I really appreciated his way of handling this battle..this is where our focus need to be for all our struggles. This is one of the best books I've read (besides "The Book") for the Christian walk.
A Good Book on Sin--Not Growth. .......2005-05-09
Anyone seeking to understand the basics of Puritan theology via John Owen on the subject of sanctification (growth in Christ) will love this book. It is easy to read, clearly written, and easy to apply. Lundgaard has thoughtfully given us a volume on the difficulty of sin in a believer's life that should be understood with the utmost precision.
However, the book is repetitive and at times overbearing. The theme that kept reoccurring was that believers, at their core have an indubitable force living in them that hates God. There is little to no mention of the Holy Spirit except for the obvious doctrine of regeneration that leads us to accept the truth of the gospel.
This is, no doubt, a great book if you want to learn about sin. However, you will be left with the picture that true godliness is to be hopelessly left in the quagmire of an inner, unending war with the flesh. If you are looking for hope in defeating sin, this book is not the best, but it will give you good knowledge of what you are up against.

The Essential Savage.......2007-03-30
The only man in America who gives a damn about America. He is not off base when he says Liberalism Is A Mental Disorder.
The Essential Savage (Box Set).......2006-08-27
The entire set exceeds expectations. These books should be available to all,but unfortunately if they were, they would probably be immediately removed and burned as hatespeech. They are a must read for anyone wanting to explain to their chidlren what this country was about and what is being done to it (and them) by a very vocal minority.
The Essential Savage - Box set.......2006-07-03
REFRESHING & tells it like it is. If more people would pay attention to what is being done & said about what kind of tricks & lies the politicians are spreading this country might stand a chance to survive.
WELL, HE DOES HAVE A POINT...SOMETIMES!!.......2006-05-09
I WONT SAY I AGREE WITH EVERYTHING DR. WEINER SAYS AND SOME OF HIS VIEWS ARE WAY TOO EXTREME FOR MY TASTES. BUT I THINK HE MAKES SOME SENSE ON CERTAIN ISSUES. ESPECIALLY ISLAMOFACISM AND THE TRUE NATURE OF THIS ACCURSED RELIGION. AS A KEEN STUDENT OF HISTORY AND PHILOSPHY I WOULD AGREE WITH MR WEINER'S VIEWS ON THE RELIGION; ITS EVILS,INTOLERENCE,HATRED AND INCITEMENT TO COMMIT HEINOUS CRIMES IN THE NAME OF ALLAH. IT IS BIGGEST THREAT IN THE LONG TERM FOR ALL CIVILZATION IF YOU HAVE READ YOUR WORLD HISTORY. SAY WHAT YOU WILL BUT HE IS AN INDEPENDENT THINKER AND NOT LIKE THE OTHER RIGHT WING STOOGES OF HANNITY,LIMBAUG AND THE REST OF THE CIRCUS WHO TRY TO SPIN THE INADEQUACIES OF THE CUYRRENT GOVERNMENT.YOU HAVE TO ADMIT HE IS INTELLIGENT, A GREAT SPEAKER,HIGHLY EDUCATED,WELL QUALIFIED(WITH ALL HIS DEGREES) AND SPEAKS HIS MIND. IT IS GOOD TO HEAR HIS POLITICALLY INCORRECT SPEECH AND JUST CHUCKLE AT SOME OBSERVATIONS. AMERICA,DESPITE HIS EXTREME AND RIGHTIST TENDENCIES YOU NEED A PERSON LIKE HIM TO BLAST THE BIPARTISIAN HYPOCRISY AND POLITICAL CORRECTNESS. I THINK SOME OF HIS TALK IS MORE FOR SHOCK AND ENTERTAINMENT VALUE THEN REAL OPINION. WELL,PERHAPS HE IS EXERCISING HIS OWN PERSONAL DEMONS THROUGH TALK RADIO. WELL, MENTAL ILLNESS SHOULD NOT STOP ANYONE FROM DOING TALK RADIO.ANYWAY, THE SHOW IS NEVER BORING..
The Savage Nation Rocks. .......2006-03-23
When I first started listening to Michael Savage, I thought him a little intense but the more I listened the more I understood that one needs to be intense when talking of freedom and the danger our country faces from the socialists who want to destroy our American way of life. I highly recommend these three books to anyone interested in truth, justice, and the American way.

Good Book A Little Dry.......2006-03-24
This was a interesting book, but it can come of a little dry ecspecially at the end. It is just Bobby Kennedy's version of how the committee got started and what happened.I was interested on both sides of the story so I'm also reading Jimmy Hoffa's autobiography which goes into the comittee as well. It's amazing how Bobby can makes some of the statments about crime that he does with the Kennedy's being so crooked themselves??
A Great Inside Look.......2002-11-16
This is a marvelous peek inside Robert Kennedy's efforts against corrupt labor unions. I had long been intrigued with the whole RFK-Jimmy Hoffa "feud," so this was a treat for me. Robert Kennedy's writing style is at once humorous and pragmatic. He provides a detailed account of the inner workings of the McClellan Committee. Moreover, he meticulously describes the corruption within the labor organizations, with particular emphasis on Jimmy Hoffa. A word of warning: When I use words like "detailed" and "meticulously," I'm being serious. The book is a must for anyone interested in RFK, Jimmy Hoffa, the McClellan Committee, or American labor history; but someone who wants an action movie packaged as a book, will probably be disillusioned. Having said that, I loved the book. I highly recommend it.

Book Description
Acclaimed New York Times bestselling author Robert K. Tanenbaum ratchets up the suspense with an authentic and morally complex mystery set deep inside the New York City police department.
When a black man is shot multiple times in the back on the streets of New York by an NYPD golden boy, chaos erupts throughout the city. And in an election year -- a year of secret handshakes and politically motivated favors -- no one feels the pressure more than the men and women who vow to protect and to serve. For Butch Karp, chief assistant district attorney for New York County, bullet holes aren't the only holes in this volatile case, nor in a second shocking puzzle...
A slow-witted young man faces the death penalty for murdering a Jewish diamond merchant. Karp is quickly learning that politics mean a lot more than justice when it becomes apparent certain higher-ups would rather whitewash the truth than lose the Jewish vote. Add a serial killer who is murdering the homeless to Karp's daily grind, and it's clear he is surrounded by high-profile time bombs that are promising to blow the city to its core.
To make matters worse, Karp's wife, Marlene Ciampi, has become independently wealthy thanks to the Internet stock boom and has decided to enjoy her newly acquired fortune through manic shopping sprees and free-flowing alcohol. Plus, his daughter, Lucy, is skipping school to feed the homeless not far from where the slasher stalks his prey. Desperate to stop the violence before it touches his family, Karp must wade through a system of corruption and conspiracy that threatens to silence his pursuit of the truth...forever.

How Giuliani Cleaned House in NYC.......2007-05-26
Sure helps when you have folks like Robert K. Tannenbaum at the bench to clean house in NYC (Rudy too).
The author is first and foremost a trial lawyer in NYC who has never lost a felony case. Go get 'em Tanenbaum.
This pre-911 legal thriller of Tanenbaum, published in August of 2001, begins with a high speed police chase of a car thief who gets killed in the process. Chapter 1. Thereafter, the high speed plots begin and intertwine. Butch Karp's boss is up for re-election as Manhattan D.A. Meanwhile, a "bum slasher" is on the loose, killing street people while Karp's high school senior daughter Lucy is mingling with the underground, trying to feed and clothe them through her church's mission work. Butch's wife, Marlene Ciampi, manages to add much spice to the story, keeping everyone, especially the reader on edge. Lucy is the heroine in the story. I love Lucy!
I prefer Tannenbaum's Fury over this one, but again this is an earlier book in the series. I love legal thrillers and the bad guys always lose with Tanenbaum, literally and figuratively! Go get 'em Tanenbaum.
Enemy Within.......2002-08-21
I read constantly and I read many police/lawyer/crime novels. I was very disappointed with this one. Aside from the crucial chase/shooting scene, the book was so dull that I stopped reading it after 84 pages. It is so filled with mind numbing descriptions and conversations that I had to force myself to plow through the dialogue. Being a detective myself, I was also put off by the author's obvious feeling of superiority to cops that seems to permeate his writing. In addition, the author, being a lawyer, talks too much without making a point. I have read other novels written by attorneys and have enjoyed them, so I am not just attorney-bashing here. This is the first and last Tanenbaum novel for me.
DIRT IN THE DA'S OFFICE.......2002-02-20
I DON'T REMEMBER READING ANY OF THE PREVIOUS BOOKS IN THIS SERIES SO THE CHARACTERS ARE ALL NEW TO ME.THE AUTHOR WORKED IN NYC AS HEAD OF THE HOMICIDE DIVISION SO I THINK HE KNOWS THE INS AND OUTS OF THE DA'SOFFICE.THE SHOOT OUT WITH THE DRIVER OF A STOLEN CAR STARTS THE PLOT. THE COP CLAIMS SELF DEFENSE BUT THE VICTIM HAD 10 SHOTS IN THE BACK WHILE HIS CAR WAS FACING THE POLICE CRUISER. AS A FAVORED COP HE IS NO BILLED BY THE GRAND JURY WHICH WAS PRESENTED WITH A CLEANED UP VERSIONOF THE CRIME.KARP IS THE HEAD OF THE HOMICIDE DIVISION AND SUSPECTS A COVER UP.HIS WIFE MARLENE IS A HIGHER UP IN A PRIVATE SECURITY AGENCY. LUCY IS THE 17 YR. OLD DAUGHTER WHO IS GIFTED IN LANGUAGES BUT HATES AND SKIPS SCHOOL DOING HER GOOD WORKS IN THE SOUP KITCHEN OF A CHURCH WHERE SHE IS ENAMORED OF A YOUNG PRIEST. THEY HANG OUT WITH THE HOMELESS MEN TRYING TO MAKE THINGS BETTER WHILE LOOKING FOR THE SLASHER WHO KILLS THE HOMELESS MEN.THE STORY IS LONG AND AT TIMES BELABORED AS PERSONAL GOALS AREJUGGLED AROUND WITH DRINKING PROBLEMS, SUDDEN WEALTH, TOO MUCH TIME SPENT AT WORK AND LUCYS OBSESSION WITH HER RELIGION, SAINTS AND HER FEELINGS TOWARDS THE PRIEST WHO IS 10 YEARS HER SENIOR BUT SEEMS RATHER IMMATURE AT TIMES AND DISTRACTED WITH SOMETHING HE DOES NOT SHARE WITH ANYONE.THE COPS ARE LOOKING FOR A HOMELESS MAN BUT HE HAS DISAPPERED SO LUCY ET AL GO DEEP UNDERGROUND IN THE NYC SYSTEM OF OLD DRAIN PIPES AND SERVICE TUNNELS, TRYING TO FIND CANMAN TO SAVE HIM. NEARLY EVERYONE DOWN THERE GETS KILLED OR CLOSE TO IT.THE MYSTERYS ARE SOLVED, THE DA'S OFFICE IS CLEANSED AND KARP AND MARLENE TAKE UP A NEW OCCUPATION.I WOULD SUPPOSE A NEW BOOK WILL COME OUT IN THE SERIES BUT I AM NOT INTERESTED IN READING ANOTHER BELABORED BOOK.
Disappointing...........2002-01-16
This book is so boring, that I had to plow through it..I have enjoyed his previous books but not this one...it's like one big lecture, and no excitement..Marlene is over the edge...next time I will definitely check his out at the library....and if it is good I will then consider purchasing the next one after that one...the only reason I finished this one is because I had invested dollars from my "book budget"....
Always a good yarn..........2001-10-30
is what you will get with a Tanenbaum novel. Enemy Within captured my imagination and attention a little less than earlier books in the series.
Don't get me wrong, I'm still quite taken with the Karp daughter, Lucy, although the freedom she is granted to move about any and all dank corner of NYC, making friends of the homeless, is a little bit of a stretch. Some old friends from the series return, although their bits are far too small -- Hrcany, Guma, Newberry and one of Tanenbaum's best, Tran. Butch himself is
worrying his way through middle age, and is believable in his motivation and his frustration at the lack of normalcy in either his work or family life. (Oh, if only he realized that this is true of everyone in their 40's!)
The sour note is the author's decision to drive Marlene to drink. And spend. And drink. And spend. And drink. And, having tried to fit this zany, opinionated Italian lady into that mold, Tanenbaum does not do the reader any favors by asking us to believe that she can then shake herself out of it without professional help, simply because she is motivated to take down some bad guys and stop ignoring her daughter and help resolve the murders she is involved in.
Marlene takes the book from 4 stars to 3. Is it time for a change in the series? Perhaps so, the DA's office has been thoroughly dismembered in the series, perhaps Butch needs a judgeship. Perhaps Marlene needs to have at least one child learning disabled, so she can devote her considerable skills to something that matters.
Still, the series that best showcases all the slices of life that are NYC, continues to appeal, even when exploring the wildly rumored underground terrors that haunt the city and maintain the myth.
Perhaps best purchased used or borrowed from the library!
Book Description
It is early summer of 2009, an uneasy time in the American capital. Washington is tense over a showdown between the US and the new ruler of Libya. Laura Chapman is a Secret Service agent assigned to the White House. She is quirky, solitary, and frequently unorthodox. She is also a brilliant intelligence analyst, which explains why she has been assigned to the Presidential Protection Detail for eleven years. The CIA assigns Laura to a case that borders on the unthinkable: an assassination plot against the new president. Shockingly, the trigger man will be a member of the United States Secret Service. Since it is known that the assassin is male, Laura is not a suspect. The odds are heavily against her locating an alleged assassin within the Service, and even more heavily against her surviving the assignment. Members of her service, as well as agents in the CIA and FBI, are waiting for her to fail. As her investigation proceeds, Laura cannot shake the suspicion that there are things she has not been told, that she is being set up. In her increasing moments of paranoia, she wonders: Am I going to be the next Lee Harvey Oswald? The first in a series of thrillers featuring Agent Laura Chapman, The Enemy Within is a page-turner you wont be able to put down.

If you are tired of wasting your time reading boring and badly written books check this one out........2006-05-11
I have read a lot of books like this one while traveling and almost always I am pissed off when I finish. Dumb. badly written. Cliche filled. Boring.
Not this time. Noel Hynd has written a well-researched thriller (don't let his research turn you off - he integrates it seamlessly) that rocks down to the finish line. Nicely subversive but never preachy, it manages to have both a point of view and intelligence while staying true to the conventions of thrillers.
I would reccommend this book over just about any current best seller of its kind.
Certainly it is light years ahead of every book I picked up in various airports on several recent trips to Oklahoma. (Well I did see Richard Morgan's "Altered Carbon" on one rack - buy that one as well even though it is SF).
You cannot go wrong with "The Enemy Within."
Intelligent, well written and fun........2006-03-18
This was a very well-written book and very enjoyable. This particular genre can degenerate into sordidness but not this book. It had grit that wasn't gratuitous and great character development. Let's have more Laura Chapman - soon!
Fast paced and fantastic!.......2006-03-14
An excellent hard-hitting thriller! I had previously read Ghosts by the same author, which was great, but I actually prefer this genre. I loved the new heroine, Laura, who's a US Secret Service agent. Great story, great action scenes, terrific characters, intelligent writing. I read the whole thing in one weekend. This is how spy thrillers SHOULD be. I was sorry when it ended.
edge of the seat thriller .......2006-03-09
In 2009, because she is a female Presidential Protection Detail Secret Service Agent Laura Chapman is tasked to stop a paid assassin from killing the President. Little is known about the assailant except that he is male and a secret service agent.
Thirty something Laura begins her investigation by tracking down the source of the tip, a peson who used the name "Charley Boy". Laura learns that Charley Boy is actually hooker Anna Muang, who overheard a client explaining the hit on POTUS. As Laura continues to dig for the blond evil, she finds herself racing against time and not getting any closer. Who amongst her peers has the audacity to accept $10 million from an enemy foreign government to kill the president of the United States?
THE ENEMY WITHIN is an exhilarating thriller that never slows down from the moment that Laurua learns her gender gives her the assignment until the final showdown inside the White House. Though the action-packed story line contains too many sidebars that enable the audience to also better understand the motives of the heroine, the countdown threat to the assassination keeps the audience enthralled as increasingly it looks like the rogue agent will succeed. Noel Hynd provides an edge of the seat thriller to his many fans.

Book Description
Envy might well be termed the silent sin. Because while all of us envy others to some extent, few of us acknowledge our problem out loud, let alone try to overcome it and move forward. Bob Sorge draws upon his own pastoral experience-plus the admitted burden of his own envy-to show why and how it can adversely affect the ministry of a church and even prevent revival in people's lives. Sorge reveals why comparison of our ministry and spiritual gifts to that of our fellow believers is to be avoided at all costs so that we do not hamstring God's plan for our growth and the accomplishment of His purposes. This is a must-read for leaders of all churches, great and small-and anyone who wants the peace that comes with a life free of envy.

The everybody sin.......2004-12-10
I have never heard of or read Bob Sorge until now, but this book is well written and simple to understand. It was loaned to me by a friend and I was immediately taken by its straight forward attack of an insidious enemy.
Sorge's precepts are supported by biblical reference, the use of which is plentiful. I see something in Sorge's writing that I like very much. When scripture is brought into the chapter, he often brings clarity to its relevance through explanation and description, i.e., I am not expected to be a theologian to understand how the author wants to apply the information. There are several illustrations from his own life and he is transparent enough to allow for believability.
It seems to me that the book has broad application in humanity as each of us deals with envy. It deals with the Church in this, there are numerous references to the envy taking place between churchmen in each city or region. Whereas many areas are seeing "community building" taking place in their town others are still working to outdo their fellow pastor. Great strength comes to the church through unity of purpose under Christ!
Sorge makes a beautiful summary of what we'd be like minus envy when he says, "When we are rooted, grounded and perfected in love, our sense of identity in God is so profoundly fulfilled that nothing we see with the natural eye can produce an envious response within us. We wish for nothing that anyone else has because we already have everything there is to have- an extravagant, intimate relationship with the Lord of the universe" (pg 132,133).
Enjoy this book and get a copy for your pastor.
Necessary!.......2004-02-21
My mom told me she wanted me to read a chapter and the end of this book called "Envy" just because it was really good, etc. I couldn't just read the last chapter, so I started reading knowing that I definitely didn't have a problem with envy or jealousy because I'm just not like that. By the end of the first few pages, I was repenting to God for all the envy that I've harbored against my friends, family and fellow Christians! I even sought the forgiveness of a few people whom I felt that I had limited their ministry because of my envy.
EVERY Christian needs to read this book. I know that YOU don't have a problem with envy, but just buy this book anyways. You can read it and share it with your friends who are envious. ;-) This is definitely worth the money!

A personal story of a Woman's Battle with Trichotillomania (Compulsive Hair Pulling) and her recovery process emotionally and physically.
Customer Reviews:
A must read for anybody who suffers from trichotillomania.......2005-05-12
This is the first book I read on the subject of trichotillomania, and I felt as if Cheryn were talking to me personally. I cried tears of relief to know that others had this disorder, and that they shared so much in common with me. Trichotillomania is a disorder of isoaltion and secrecy. That is almost worst than the hair pulling itself. This book truly helped me to understand that I was not alone, and to know that others felt the same way and had gone through many of the same things. Cheryn is personable, sincere, compassionate and loving, and this book will reach out and touch any body who reads it.
Must have for trichotillomania sufferers!.......2003-11-07
I bought this book a couple of years ago and it immediately gave me hope and success with my lash/brow pulling; Cheryn and I talked via email many times and she is a wonderful, caring person and it helps to have someone to talk with about this disorder. The book is a MUST for anyone suffering from trichotillomania. I cannot understand why anyone would give the book less than five stars. Buy it, read it, and read it again and again when you pull again and again.
This Changed My Life!.......2001-12-02
I read Cheryn's book when I first discovered I was not the only one (about 2 years ago). It was so comforting to hear her personal struggle with trichotillomania, and I was amazed by how much of it paralleled my own life. I experienced the full range of emotions while reading-- from laughing out loud to sobbing. Knowing that I was not alone gave me the courage to go seek (and find!) the help I needed. Cheryn truly helped me to change my life. I recently had the honor of meeting her in person; she's absolutely one of the most amazing women ever!
The greatest book I ever read.......2001-09-10
I only found out a couple of years ago that trichotillomania is not really a rare disorder.....I have had it for 34 years. I read Cheryn's book and I have to admit that upon reading the poem on the first page, I cried so much I couldn't read the rest of the book until the next day. It was so incredible to find out others shared my secret and Cheryn did a wonderful job of putting it into words, which must have been really hard, since none of us want to talk about it. I also think it's a great book for anyone to read because Cheryn is an inspiration!
If you have trich, read this book.......2001-08-14
If you or someone you know suffers with trichotillomania, this book offers very helpful insights from a personal sufferer. I know this firsthand as I also have trich. While reading Cheryn's accounts of her struggles with this condition, I felt like I had found a long-lost friend, as I shared so many of the same emotional and social snags associated with it. But more than a simple account of growing up with a very trying and persistant handicap, Cheryn invites the reader to accept the condition for what it can bring sufferers in a positive light. As she explains, for those who have trich, the challenge of continually learning to accept oneself as a whole person is magnified, but this can lead to some wonderful opportunities to grow in ways that only other sufferers can know. And this leads to the most rewarding aspect -- that of being able to share your feelings and experiences with others like you. Because as Cheryn succinctly puts it, "You are not alone."

The Intimate Enemy: Winning the War Within Yourself.......2001-03-10
Self-development expert Guy Finley and psychologist Ellen Dickstein teamed up to write The Intimate Enemy: Winning the War Within Yourself. Their book is intended for people who are tired of struggling and wish to "sign a peace treaty with life."
Finley and Dickstein explain that "we each have, and operate from, a false nature that is a jumble of our memories, conditioning, and some tempermental qualities." That false self responds to everything that happens to us, and its response is usually negative or defensive. We then find "ourselves caught up in the same kinds of situations again and again, and nothing ever seems to be resolved in a new way."
They call the false self an intimate enemy and say that we are our own worst enemies when it comes to finding true happiness.
Their book devoted to learning how to recognize the intimate enemy and "discover how to rise above our own present psychology."
Our false selves blame events outside ourselves for our unhappiness or see neutral events as threats, with the result that we are contantly battling to control external circumstances. Only when we become aware of the "True Self" within do we learn we are a part of a world of truth and light where all battles are non-existent.
The authors use short stories and examples to show how people misunderstand the world around them. They explain how to become aware of the fallacies the false self continually attempts to foist off as truth, and how to determine what is real and what is deceit. They say that "understanding that we are a multiplicity of selves is critical to recognizing, and ultimately defeating, the intimate enemy."
They emphasize self-study as the primary way of overcoming the false self. Self-study involves rousing ourselves from "psychic slumber" and becoming aware of our thoughts and internal actions. They offer specific tips for achieving greater self-awareness.
The Intimate Enemy is for anyone who wants more from life than a daily battle against unseen enemies.
Interesting concept.......2000-02-17
It is very hard to focus on the now but when I have accomplished it strange things have happened. Once I saw a blue meteor go across the sky and another time I noticed a tiny bird perched on a tree limb staring at me it was a perfectly gorgeous little bird ordinarily I neverr would have seen it.
The Truth shall set you free........1999-10-22
After studying the principles Guy, Ellen and others have shown me for a few years, there is a joy that wells up inside me on a regular basis. The Truth shall set you free, and this particular effort by these two individuals left me with new insights that struck chords deep within me that recognized them as the Truth each time I turned the page. They explain why our outer and inner worlds are filled with so much proverbial darkness and outlines ways individuals can help to move them toward the Light mostly within themselves.
A life-changing book!.......1999-02-10
The Intimate Enemy is a self-help book and more. For those who have been searching for real help in understanding themselves and their lives, this book is what you've been looking for. Written in an easy to understand, step-be-step fashion, you will learn how to detach yourself from what has been preventing you from realizing your potential as a human being. I have read all of Finley's books and have been working with his concepts and exercises for several years. There is no question that applying the principles found in this book can change one's life for the better!
A Most Aweome Book.......1998-11-10
This book is tremendous, it is filled with such practical insight. There are many books out their on the self-help shelves, but this work is not in the same category. Unlike all those other books which only seem to keep you running around like a dog chasing it's tail, this book not only tells you, but shows you how you can be free of any fear or limitation. In fact The Intimate Enemy shows you the only thing that has been holding you back has no more substance than a shadow. Sound unbelievable? IT IS! Don't believe me, test REALITY AND FIND OUT FOR YOURSELF. I also recomend The Lost Secrets of Prayer (by Guy Finley). I have met Guy Finley in person and I can honestly say he is as Genuine as his books. Enjoy! Cousin Vinnie NY
Book Description
To gain the upper hand in conflict the ability to know what your enemy is planning is vital. Massive amounts of money have been spent and many lives have been lost in pursuit of this objective. From biblical times to the present day, leaders have employed espionage on and off the battlefield in the quest for victory. Tactics might differ, from dirty tricks and theft to interrogation and torture, but the aim is the same - to outmanoeuvre your enemy and emerge triumphant. Separating myth from reality, the Enemy Within, traces the history of espionage from its development in ancient times through to the end of the Cold War and beyond, shedding light on the clandestine activities that have so often tipped the balance in times of war. This detailed account delves into the murky depths of the realm of the spymasters and their spies, revealing many amazing, and often bizarre stories, along the way. From the Monkey hanged as a spy during the Napoleonic wars to the British Double Cross Committee in World War II and from Ivan the Terrible's forming of the first Russian secret police in the 16th century to the infiltration of the IRA in the 20th century, this journey through the history of espionage shows us that be they thrill seekers or madmen, fanatics or tricksters no two spies are alike and their fascinating stories are fraught with danger and intrigue.
CHAPTER HEADS In ancient times. Through dark ages. Spy, Britannia! Espionage in the Age of Reason. Vive la revolution! Napoleon's 'secret part'. Uncivil war. The godfather of secret service. Spy fever. Double-cross agents and radio games. Axis spies against America. Spies of the Soviet era. With no end in sight.

Tales of Spies and Spying.......2007-01-16
This history of espionage is primarily a generalized discussion of spies rather than the more technical side of the business that became the major emphasis of American intelligence during the Cold War with the U.S.S.R. When the problem was to count the number of ICBMs they had, the technical aspects of first the U2 and SR-71 missions and then the satellites were the ideal tools.
Unfortunately these National Technical Means (NTM), the term used for such intelligence by the politicoes in the various treaties, proved to be pretty useless in view of what happened on 9/11. The United States had deliberately cut back on it's actual spies in the field.
As this book points out, spies and spying tend to not be nice people doing plesant things. The CIA has a reputation for recruiting at Ivy Leage universities. This is not where you will find dark skinned, un-shaven muslims that would be willing to infiltrate Iran, Iraq, Afghanistan and the other places where we need to have coverage.
I imagine, I hope, that the people running the CIA already know the things found in this book. I also hope that they are working hard to establish a better spying network in the Middle East.
