Sue Monk Kidd's The Mermaid Chair is the soulful tale of Jessie Sullivan, a middle-aged woman whose stifled dreams and desires take shape during an extended stay on Egret Island, where she is caring for her troubled mother, Nelle. Like Kidd's stunning debut novel, The Secret Life of Bees, her highly anticipated follow up evokes the same magical sense of whimsy and poignancy.
While Kidd places an obvious importance on the role of mysticism and legend in this tale, including the mysterious mermaid's chair at the center of the island's history, the relationships between characters is what gives this novel its true weight. Once she returns to her childhood home, Jessie is forced to confront not only her relationship with her estranged mother, but her other emotional ties as well. After decades of marriage to Hugh, her practical yet conventional husband, Jessie starts to question whether she is craving an independence she never had the chance to experience. After she meets Brother Thomas, a handsome monk who has yet to take his final vows, Jessie is forced to decide whether passion can coexist with comfort, or if the two are mutually exclusive. As her soul begins to reawaken, Jessie must also confront the circumstances of her father's death, a tragedy that continues to haunt Jessie and Nelle over thirty years later.
By boldly tackling such major themes as love, betrayal, grief, and forgiveness, The Mermaid Chair forces readers to question whether moral issues can always be interpreted in black or white. It is this ability to so gracefully present multiple sides of a story that reinforces Kidd's reputation as a well-respected modern literary voice. --Gisele Toueg

An Adequate Follow-up to "Bees".......2007-09-30
Of course, this was not The Secret Life of Bees, but it was a decent book in its own right. Jesse returns to the island where she grew up to deal with a crisis involving her mother. When she arrives, her life is turned up-side-down. The tumult includes falling in love with a monk, her mother's sanity, the decision of whether to abandon her former life and her husband, and the realizations about her father's death. The conclusion was good, all the lose ends tied up, but I can't help but think that Jesse was unjustly vindicated. Her actions were often selfish and her justification for these actions were unfounded. But the story was full of folk-lore and embedded with self-realization, both on her part, her mother's and even Brother Thomas. This was a "coming of age" story, even though the characters were past their prime. An adequate follow up to her first novel, it has established Sue Monk Kidd's niche as a writer of honest southern women with pasts to resolve.
A great story writer!!! I love this........2007-09-26
Sue Monk Kidd is an excellent writer and especially for women. NOT that the opposite sex wouldn't enjoy it as well, I simply find this particular book a story that women will enjoy in every possible way. Kidd has a very spiritual nature and though it doesn't hit you over the head in this story, it can be felt. I was "hooked" from the beginning to the end. I am figuring YOU will too.
A Disappointment.......2007-09-06
I was disappointed by this book. While - as usual - I enjoyed Monk Kidd's writing this story didn't work for me. Specifically I found her relationship with Whit (Brother Thomas) unnecessary. Not only did it not help the narrative, IMO, it lessened the story and the characters.
I think the story would have been better if Monk Kidd had instead focused on the other aspects of the novel - Jessie's midlife discontent, her father's death, her mother's condition and her relationship with her mother, her relationships with her husband and daughter, the relationships of the other island women, more information on the Gullah culture, etc.
There is no comparison to "The Secret Life of Bees" which I found magical and more compelling. Also Sue Monk Kidd's non-fiction "Dance of the Dissident Daughter" was, IMO, fantastic - and had a resounding impact on me.
I would recommend other Sue Monk Kidd books before I would recommend "The Mermaind Chair".
Eh.......2007-09-05
I could care less about this book. It was boring and I only bought it because it was in the grocery store. Now I know why it was near the suppositories. Though the book wasn't horrific, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.
vulgar.......2007-09-02
If vulgar language bothers you, don't read this book. I was listening to it on CD, and the first time the "F" word was used, toward the beginning of the story, the CD set was returned to the library, unfinshed. It disgusts me when authors ruin what could potentially be a good book with the use of unnecessary profanity.

love these cards.......2007-09-30
I highly recommend these cards as they are accurate, really beautiful and I felt a peaceful beautiful energy while using them. DV gives thorough instructions on how to use the deck and make the most of your readings. I saw the wonderful reviews on Amazon, knowing nothing about mermaids and dolphins, but decided to buy the deck, as it was one of her most popular. I attuned to Dolphin Reiki to enhance the use of these wonderful cards and recommend anyone interested in buying her deck, do the same.
Nice Deck!.......2007-07-16
As someone stated before, I too am a card fanatic. My excuse is that I need a wide variety of cards for my readings which is true, but I probably have over done it since I own close to 25 different sets. Anyway I recently bought this set after reading reviews and giving it some thought. I didn't want to buy this set at first because I didn't really know anything about mermaids and honestly, I thought they looked child-like, however I am a big Doreen Virtue fan and decided I'd go for it. After spending a little time with the cards, I found them to be quite accurate. To me, some of the card meanings are general and redundant, but I still find them to be helpful and accurate! It's a nice set!
Nice deck.......2007-06-28
to add to your collection, but I would recommend the Goddess Oracle cards by Doreen Virtue before this deck -- and I own both...
If You Love Mermaids You'll Love This Deck.......2007-06-27
Ok I admit it, I'm a oracle card junkie. I have probably about 10 different sets or types of oracle/tarot cards if not more. 3 of them are from the Doreen Virtue Collection. This set, the Magical Unicorn set and Healing with Fairies deck. Admittedly there is little variation with regards to card meanings but it doesn't stop me from appreciating any of them any less. The fact is that some people may be attracted to Angel Cards, others may feel an affinity for Mermaids and yet others a love for Unicorns. So while you may not want to buy Doreen's whole collection of card decks she offers enough of a variety that one will surely find something that meets your interest. Then perhaps move on to different line to mix things up a bit.
I am happy to stand corrected but..........2006-05-28
...I am a great Doreen Virtue fan on the whole, but I simply can't help thinking that she is simply regurgitating all the information and thoughts and insights we have heard before, in this pack. For me it is a case of re-packaging what has already been said a million times. The pictures are sweet enough, and very colourful, but I would stick to some of her other cards like the Archangel cards...I feel Doreen has simply thought
" Hmmm what mystical icon can I put on this new set to re-sell as something new ". I am cynical, but can't help thinking she is laughing all the way up her beautifully tailored sleeve as she checks her bank account.

Book Description
Fred is not your ordinary mermaid. She's not blonde. She's not buxom. And she's definitely not perky. In fact, Fred can be downright cranky. And it doesn't help matters that her hair is blue.
While volunteering at the New England Aquarium, Fred learns that there are weird levels of toxins in the local seawater. A gorgeous marine biologist wants her help investigating. So does her merperson ruler, the High Prince of the Black Sea. You'd think it would be easy for a mermaid to get to the bottom of things. Think again.

Quirky Characters and Murder in Boston Harbor.......2007-09-19
Fredrika the Merwoman is not exactly a likable character. She has the attitude of one scorned. But she cares about the fish in the ocean. She is offended by any sexual contact anyone else has and she herself needs to have some, although she would never admit it.
This is my first read by this author. I enjoyed the quit wit, but felt like the story lacked some depth. I would read her again thou.
Moody Fred.......2007-09-14
This was a fun read! The whole time I was reading it I was thinking this might be a cute TV series. I would love to see what hot guy they can find to play Arthur!!!!! The mermaid prince from the black sea is everything macho and Thomas the marine biologist/romance writer is everything romantic. Fred is a mermaid marine biologist that hates being a mermaid with a crazy wild hippy mom who got knocked up on the beach by a mermaid. Now that is a wild night. Anyway what a quick and wild ride left you wanting more of MJD.
New Undersea Fantasy will turn the genre on its tail!.......2007-09-13
New and filled with a sarcastic wit that makes one wonder if the author herself is hiding green hair and a tail, SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES is book you absolutely won't want to miss.
Dr. Fredrika "Fred" Bim is a surly hybrid (half mermaid, half biped) marine biologist in charge of the main tank at the New England Aquarium. Fred has her share of problems, including the fact that her parents have decided to clue her in that she's not her father's biological child (duh, the man would drown in a tide pool) and the fact that the fish in Main One are on a hunger strike because she refuses to play "Pet Shop Boys" for them over the P. A. system. Her life has just been made more complicated by:
Jonas her metrosexual best friend who is crushing on her boss (Barb is fifteen years his senior and thinks he's gay). Jonas has a knack for showing up at the worst possible moment and really can't help sticking his nose into her business.
Dr. Barbara Robinson, her boss who thinks that wearing a lab coat and her hair in a braid (so everyone can see her name) gives her an air of authority over her employees who all have more education than she does. Barb however is intuitive and had the great insight to see through Fred's "punk" hair to the brilliant scientist she is. She has just introduced Fred to the new water fellow, Dr. Thomas Pearson.
Thomas, marine biologist and "mermaid geek" who has made a fortune writing romance novels and who is the only person ever to notice that her hair is green not blue. (Her mother had often told her that "Mr. Right" would see her true self, and the fact that he's totally hot doesn't hurt either.) Thomas has come to find the source of toxins in Boston Harbor.
High Prince Artur of the Black Sea who is "Undersea Folk" royalty with Ruby hair and eyes to match has come to claim his "subject's" fealty and to gain her aid in solving the problem of poisons in the harbor. He's not at all pleased to note Thomas' interest in Fred as he's got his eye on her as well. Poor Fred hasn't had a date in quite some time (the last one having unfortunately turned out to be Barb's ex-husband). Now suddenly she has two men after her tail (pardon the pun).
Madison (yeah like the mermaid in "Splash") Fehr the gorgeous, too bubbly, man-eating new intern who predictably "loved dolphins as a girl", has rich parents who just happen to be the museum's benefactors and who just might be connected to the goings on in the bay.
Okay so I loved dolphins as a kid myself, which is why I picked this book up in the first place! I'll be the first to admit that I love any literature that features mermaids or selkies, but this book may just set the genre on its tail (so to speak). SLEEPING WITH THE FISHES is a refreshingly funny modern romantic fantasy, I can't wait for another.

Fast and Funny.......2007-09-13
I liked this book because it was fast and funny. I tend to read some pretty heavy stuff and wanted something light with a twist. Well this was it. Really serious paranormal readers would be disappointed but if you're in the mood for something entertaining, fun, and no overwhelming rhetoric, plot twists, or tedious politics and intrigue then this book is it. FUN. Just plain fun and a great diversion from the stress of the 'real world'
NICE BOOK.......2007-09-08

Now, with the ring stuck firmly on her hand, Emily finds herself under a new curse: in just a few days, she’ll cease to be half-human and half-mermaid and must say good-bye to one parent forever. Can she possibly find the other missing ring that will break all the curses? Is there anyone who can help her — before it’s too late?

My grand daughter was so excited when she opened this gift from me that I knew I had done well(kids don't always get too excited when thye open gifts that are books these days). She had read the previous Emily Windsnap books so I thought that she may want to read it. If your girl is into mermaids she will like these books.

My daughter loved this whole series! She is 9 and really loves mermaids. This was perfect for her.
A great book, one that can be enjoyed on land or at sea.......2007-06-05
EMILY WINDSNAP AND THE CASTLE IN THE MIST is the third installment in Liz Kessler's continuing saga of Emily and her friends and family in their half-ocean, half-earthly community.
Emily is a perky kid who enjoys being a mermaid, although her mother seems to be having a difficult time reconciling the fact that Emily's more academic studies have been put aside for her mermaid studies --- oceanography and underwater hairstyling. The ever-widening chasm between the lives she shares with each of her parents starts to cause a rift between them, and Emily fears they will break up.
But then King Neptune, still angered from the loss of his only intermarriage with a human, learns that Emily has uncovered the diamond ring he gave to his beloved so long ago --- which he had hoped would never surface again. As a result, he decides to ban intermarriage between merpeople and humans and curses the offspring of such unions. Emily is forced to become either fully human or a complete sea creature, thus ensuring that one of her parents would be lost to her forever. Can Emily possibly locate the other missing ring that will break all the curses? Is there anyone who can help her save the day before it's too late?
This is a complex story with deepening questions about love and its meanings, anger and its consequences, redemption and hope for the future --- all good things couched in a lushly detailed story about underwater life that should capture the attention and hearts of girls who love adventurous, romantic tales encased in charming fantasy elements.
EMILY WINDSNAP AND THE CASTLE IN THE MIST is a great book, one that can be enjoyed on land or at sea and certainly raises the bar on mermaid stories for young girls.

*** Buyer Beware ****.......2007-03-30
If you're expecting the same caliber of book as 'Peter and the StarCatchers' or 'Peter and the Shadow Thieves' both by Dave Barry, this book is only a 2-3 hour read and not the continuation of those two books. From the cover you get the impression that it's another FULL NOVEL, but it's not. It's just a short read. The story is nice, but nothing like the EXCELLENT two books listed above.
"Peter and the Starcatchers" for the younger set.......2007-02-16
As a librarian I am always happy to see shorter and/or easier fantasy chapter books. So many children want to read fantasy but struggle with the enormous tomes, which can be daunting. So, this latest entry by Dave Barry and Ridley Pearson - at only 134 pages - was a welcome edition before I had even read page 1. And the story did not disappoint, especially not when listening to an audiobook with the acclaimed Jim Dale performing. The story involves an extended family of mollusks, headed by Giant Prawn; the youngest member of the family, Little Scallop wants to participate more in family adventures, but is restricted to the tidal pools of home. Of course, Little Scallop disobeys and swims off with two mermaids, Surf and Aqua, right into tremendous trouble with pirates and all sorts of other bad guys. Peter and the Lost Boys make an appearance to save the day and all's well. This title will appeal to boys and girls alike; in fact it's a particularly good choice for girly-girls who will enjoy the mermaid aspect. The audio book is excellent - not unexpected with Jim Dale performing; and the print book would also make a good read-aloud for 1st - 3rd graders

Great book for tweens. My daughter brings it on all of our rode trips and still enjoys it.
Fabulous.......2007-01-13
I got this for my 6 year old daughter who loves fairies and mermaids. The art projects are awesome, many different ways to create, each project can take around an hour to do. Some of the projects need parental guidance for her age, delicate tissue paper, cutting tin foil, etc. but the outcome is always amazing and she loves to display her work, which really turns out to look professional. Could this book lead to a career in illustrating childrens book, very probable!
Also recommend "I can draw Animals" by Gibson, that she can do 100% herself with step by step directions.

Sure, they look great in the book, but none of the projects in this book will ever come out looking like the examples. It looks easy, but for little hands the drawings are kinda complicated. I've seen better drawing books for this age group.

Book Description
Rani doesn't fit in. Ever since she had to cut off her wings to save Mother Dove, she doesn’t feel like she belongs with the water talent fairies. In fact, without wings, she doesn’t feel like she belongs with any fairies at all. Rani sets off on a perilous journey to find a home, a journey that leads her underwater, deep into the lagoon, where the mermaids live. Maybe there Rani will discover who her true friends are!

Another Fairies Collection Winner.......2007-05-24
Fairy society is built upon being tiny and having wings. Rani's heroic sacrifice of her wings (in a previous adventure) has left her handicapped and without a clear place in Pixie Hollow. Rani goes questing in search of a new home.
Very well written. The story stays focused, correctly, on Rani. Lisa Papademetriou does not make the mistake of giving Rani ALMIGHTY water super powers. This is not an "Aqua-girl" story.
I was disappointed that the mermaids were not a bit more like Disney's "Little Mermaid" Ariel, but this is the universe of Peter Pan and besides Ariel is not your typical mermaid.
The CD version is read by Quincy Tyler Bernstine. I could listen to her voice all day.

My 6 year old daughter has all the books in this series and she adores them. They are pretty well written and she can read them herself (but she is above grade level in reading). My husband and I will sometimes read her one chapter a night for bedtime and it doesn't drive us nuts the way some kids books do. We have a running joke about them though. In the stories the fairies all have talents (for instance Tinkerbell is a "Pots and Pans Talent Fairy" which means she fixes pots and pans, and she belongs to the "Pots and Pans" talent group, so there are more than one faity who does this) and the talents get pretty detailed. There are fairies whose talent is setting up for celebrations, fairies who train fireflies to be lights, and fairies who pass out fairy dust to all the other fairies. It gets kind of ridiculous. We joke that there must be about 5.5 million fairies in Neverland, since they must need "Shoe Tying Talent Fairies" and "Blouse Buttoning Talent Fairies" and "Hair Brushing Talent Fairies" just to get dressed in the morning. But, my daugher loves them, and they encourage her to read, and that is the important thing.
A great fairy book!.......2006-12-18
This is the first one of the disney fairy books that my daughter read. She loves it and anything that has to do with fairies. (She's receiving the four book set for Christmas). This really allows her to use her imagination. It's a really cute book.
I also recommend the Rainbow Magic (Fairies) by Daisy Meadows for beginning readers.
The Fairy Realm series by Rodda is a little more advanced (they'll love having you read it to them).
My daughter loves this book!.......2006-11-27
I love to see my daughter want to read instead of watch TV or play video games. NO other book has peaked her interest like this one. She now loves Tinker Bell and all her nice friends. She loved this book so much that she asked for other books in the series. I plan on purchasing the whole series for her for Christmas.

Book Description
Shana Abé has entranced countless readers with her passion-filled novels of adventure, intrigue, and romance. Now the author of The Secret Swan delivers a gift from the sea: three hauntingly beautiful tales connected by a legend, a locket, and a love beyond time.
531 a.d.: The tiny island of Kell is said to be enchanted, inhabited by an extraordinary creature who comforts shipwrecked sailors passing into the next world. Prince Aedan of the Isles believes in no such nonsense—until he awakens on Kell itself and meets the sensuous siren who rescued him from the sea.
1721: Ronan MacMhuirich, Earl of Kell, is the target of an unlikely assassin: Leila, a mysterious woman from an exotic land. But his irresistibly beautiful would-be slayer is in just as much danger as Ronan when she falls for this man with a magic of his own.
2004: What do you do when you inherit a Scottish island you never knew existed—and find yourself pursued by a handsome stranger who wants to buy it from you? That’s what happens to Ruri Kell when she accepts Iain MacInnes’s invitation to visit her birthright, and listens to a proposition as sinfully tempting as everything else about him.
Three seductive love stories, three passionate couples, all linked by one of the most romantic myths of all.

DISAPPOINTED!!.......2007-08-13
I found this novel after reading Smoke Thief and Dragon Thief, both outstanding books. I am glad I read those two books before reading this one because if I had read The Last Mermaid first, I would never have purchased the other two.
This was a big disappointment and I had a very difficult time finishing it. The story idea was great and could have been a fantastic novel however; the plot was weak and boring. There was no action, no conflict or development of characters. I believe if Ms Abe had introduced a protagonist to the stories, it would have helped some.
The final story in this trilogy was by far, the best. I did find the going back and forth between past and present scenes, very disconcerting but it was still a much more pleasant read than the first two stories. I felt the characters were better developed and not "wimpy" as in the first two stories.
I do not recommend this book at all, but I do highly recommend The Smoke Thief and The Dragon Thief.
not as well written as Abe's Thief novels.......2007-06-05
I ordered this book sight unseen because I was enchanted by the author's "The Smoke Thief" & "The Dream Thief". Although the publication date of "The Last Mermaid" is 2007, it reads as though it were earlier work of this very talented author, published to satisfy those readers who asked for more after the Thief novels.
Even within this book, there is a clear improvement of character development and plotting over the course of the three novellas it contains, so it's worth a read, and I look forward to more by Shana Abe.
A Beautiful Collection.......2007-05-29
Positivley Enchanting! Shana Abe has written a beautiful collection of stories that transend time and the imagination. I have found that all her novels and novellas possess elemtents of fantasy that make the stories themselves extra romantic. "The Last Mermaid" was a spectacular read that I continued to relive days after completing the book. I know when an author has touched my soul when I can't immediatley pick up another novel to read because I'm still attached to the characters of the pervious book.
In this collection, I found that the second story, which takes place in the early 1700s as my favorite. I think Ms. Abe shines in this era! This author truely leaves me breathless and I can't wait for the third book in her Drakon Trilogy to be released.
The Last Mermaid.......2007-01-09
It's really a collection of 3 stories that are all sort of related, but in essence it's boring and not very well developed.
I feel like the last Mermaid!!.......2006-08-03
Shana Abe captures what it is like to be a Mermaid in her book.
I just love this book, obssessed with Mermaid stories.
I hope she will write another Mermaid Fiction book.

Book Description
An enchanting tale with a fabulous monster, engaging characters, plenty of mermaid magic, and a page-turning story, Liz Kessler's new middle-grade fantasy has all the charm and warmth of its predecessor, THE TAIL OF EMILY WINDSNAP.
Picture an island set in a glittering blue sea, sparkling with white sand and palm trees, a secret place where humans and merfolk live together and where a girl who grows a mermaid's tail when she enters the water is not considered a problem. To Emily Windsnap - half mermaid, half human - her new home is perfect. That is, until Emily ruins everything by waking a legendary sea monster known as the Kraken from its hundred-year sleep. As the Kraken rises from the deep, putting the future of the islanders in jeopardy, Emily makes a desperate attempt to save them. But how could she have dreamed that her best friend, Shona, would stop talking to her, or that Mandy Rushton, her old enemy from junior high, would turn up when least expected?

Emily Windsnap Book 2 rocks!.......2007-07-11
I just finished reading Emily Windsnap and the Castle of the Deep, and blew throught it in about 2 days. I thought that 1 was good, but 2 topped it. In book 2, Emily is trying to find a way to fit in with all of the other full mermaids. She wants to make them think that she is really brave, so she goes into a place where she knows she shouldn't go, but doesn't know why. Along with her friend, Shona, they accidentilly awake the kraken, which is like a giant octopus. She also has an encounter with her former enemy, Mandy Rushton. Mandy actually ends up saving Emily, and the two become friends in the end. I absolutely can't wait to read book 3, it sounds awesome.
Most exciting and interesting book ever!.......2007-05-29
Emily Windsnap: and the monster from the deep
The sequel to The Tail of Emily Windsnap
By Liz Kessler
For ages 10-14
This book takes place on Allpoints Island, located in the Bermuda triangle. Allpoints Island is the only place where humans and merfolks (mermaids) can live together in peace. Emily lives on a boat called Fortuna with her human mother and her merman father. Emily is the kind of person whose curiosity gets her into situations that aren't always good.
One day at school, Emily and her best friend Shona learned about the Kranken, which is the fearsome beast that lives in the deepest cave in the ocean, that only Neptune, king of the sea can tame. But when Emily wakes the Kranken up, will she be able to tame it without getting everyone on the island killed?
There is also another problem in Emily's way: Mandy!
Mandy the human, who has hated Emily since they were little. But with Mandy's dad being a mermaid hunter, will Emily be able to escape from telling Mandy about her true identity?

Awesome!!!.......2007-03-31
I loved this book SO much! I've read it 3 times already, and it never got old!
An fun-filled story, excellent for young girls.......2006-05-31
We first met 12-year-old Emily in THE TAIL OF EMILY WINDSNAP and learned her secret: she's half-mermaid, half-human. Emily, however, never knew this secret herself until she took swimming lessons. Not only does she discover her fishy genes, she also learns that her father, a merman, didn't abandon her as a baby after all. Instead, he was imprisoned by the angry ruler of the oceans, Neptune, who found out about the illegal love affair between her human mother and merman father. At the end of the book, the family is reunited and sent to live in a secret place where humans and merfolk can live together in harmony.
EMILY WINDSNAP AND THE MONSTER FROM THE DEEP begins as Emily and her family are discovering and exploring their beautiful new home, Allpoints Island. Emily couldn't be happier. At last, she can get to know her father and also not feel like a freak about being half-mermaid. But Emily soon realizes that even at Allpoints Island, she's different. None of the other mermaids are half-human. She longs to fit in with the other kids, and in an effort to impress two mermaid girls, Althea and Marina, Emily convinces her best friend Shona to accompany her on a risky adventure. There's a secret spooky lagoon that none of the other mermaid kids ever went into because "they're not brave enough" and have been "told not to go in there so many times." But Emily and Shona are new to the area, and Emily thinks it's the perfect opportunity to show how brave they are.
When Emily and Shona enter the secret lagoon, they don't realize the trouble they're about to cause. They accidentally wake up the Kraken, a mythical monster that is supposed to sleep for 100 years and only be woken up by Neptune himself. If the Kraken is awoken before this time, it will be [...] and cause much destruction. And that's exactly what happens. Now, the monster is on the loose and it's up to Emily to save Allpoints Island!
Not only is Emily dealing with the typical problems of a 12-year-old, she also must save her family and her new home. The book is told in the alternating voices of the heroine, Emily, and her old Brightport adversary, Mandy Rushton. Mandy's family wins a cruise that ends up in the Kraken's path. The alternating voices sometimes takes away from the flow of the novel, however, and slows down the adventure. Still, EMILY WINDSNAP AND THE MONSTER FROM THE DEEP is a fun-filled middle-grade fantasy that will appeal especially to young girls.

Book Description
Legends have long told of the powerful, mysterious creatures that are half human and half fish. This scrapbook is a collection of writings and "evidence" from Aunt Lydia. The four mermaid figures bundled with the book represent the four types of mermaids that can be found all over the world: the frequently spotted shipsavers; the wishgivers who help those in trouble; the shapeshifters who whimsically enter and exit the human world; and the weatherworks mermaids who bargain with humans for favors. Plenty of "factual" information is included.

My daughter loves mermaids and this was the greatest book ever!!!!! She never puts it down and wants me to read it to her all the time. The beautiful pictures and reality of it brought her imaginary world alive!!!!!!!!!!
Mermaid Lover's Mom.......2007-03-08
My son is obsessed with mermaids. Although the Disney versions are cute, he has pretty much outgrown them. This book brings back the magic. It is not so "girly" as many other books. It is set up as a kind of scrapbook and treats the subject as fact and family history. He is fascinated with learning about the different "types" of mermaids. The other cool thing is the pages on how to communicate with mermaids. He is having a lot of fun working with this new "language" and deciphering messages that we leave for each other. He can't wait to go to the beach this summer and leave some messages in the sand. A great book!
