5 out of 5 stars Natural Magic 2.......2007-08-31

This book was easy to understand and read. Gave good information of what Natural Magic is and was very imformative.

5 out of 5 stars Connect with the Elements !.......2007-08-28

I adore Scott Cunningham's work, and EAF&W is no exception. Although I love EARTH POWER as well, I like that EAF&W has more techniques and really helps the reader to understand how natural things are affected, and in turn, affect the elements. I love Cunningham's ability to show the reader that magic doesn't really need 50 candles and some expensive oil to be magic - all we have to do is remember our Earth and work with her - directly...that's what real magic is about.

4 out of 5 stars `Earth, Air, Fire and Water' is a continuation of Scott's widely successful `Earth Power: Techniques of Natural Magic/1983'.......2007-05-31

`Earth for money and employment

Elemental magic exists to serve those of us in need. Through life-affirming, loving rituals, we can create wondrous transformations.
The power is resident in ourselves and within the Earth. Magic is a natural, positive practice that anyone can successfully perform.

Few tools are required, and these are familiar: stones, candles, bowls of water and plants, and the powers of your mind.
Natural magic carries within its practice an innate sense of wonder and respect for nature as manifested in the Earth and the Elements.

`Earth, Air, Fire and Water' is a continuation of Scott's widely successful `Earth Power: Techniques of Natural Magic`.
Readers of `Earth Power' wanted more: more rites, spells and simple rituals that they could do with a minimum of equipment.....

with a preface, an `after-word`, appendices, glossary and a concise index.
Interspersed with charming black and white illustrations, written in the usual Scott Cunningham style, packed with information and hints/tips:-

`Safe methods of leaving candles burning in your absence (while preventing the possibility of accidental fires):

Place the candle and its holder in a large, metal pot (such as a cauldron).
Burn the candle in the bathtub (Many, many natural magicians do this).
Burn seven-day candles (which are housed in glass jars).
Burn candles in an indoor fireplace.

Generally speaking, candles shouldn't be burned during outdoor rituals and never in a forest.'

`One Spell on a Candle'
It's best to use each candle for only one magical ritual.
Say you've been burning a blue candle to promote peace. When that spell's done, you've still got half a candle left. Should you re-charge the taper and burn it to, say, promote psychic awareness?
Nope. One spell to a candle, please. I usually let the candles burn out anyway, so I don't have stubs lying around.'

From the Glossary:-
`Witchcraft
The craft of the Witch. This is magic, especially magic that utilises `Personal Power' in conjunction with `Earth Power'.
From this definition, Witchcraft isn't a religion.
However, many followers of the religion of Wicca interchangeably use both terms to describe their religion.'

From `Star Magic':-

RELEASING

This ritual is designed to use the energy of the stars to absorb negativity. Use it to help make a clean break from negative habits, misplaced emotions, and other wonderfully human problems.

Sit outside
Attune with your `Star of Power'. (explained in previous section)
Visualise your problem. Visualise yourself wallowing in it, feeding it energy so that it is self-sustaining.
Hold out your arms before you. Cup your hands together. Push this visualisation out of your arms into your hands. Break all connections with that which is to be released.
See the problem and its causes sitting within your palms.
Say something like the following:-

Blazing stars;
Fiery stars;
What was mine
Is now yours.

With a strong, certain gesture, separate your hands, fling your arms to the sky and release the negativity to the stars. PUSH it from your body.
Send it wildly spinning up into the heavens, where the energy of the stars will cleanse and transform it.
Repeat as needed.'

4 out of 5 stars not as good as "Earth Power" but still good.......2007-03-23

while I consider myself a christian and not pagan, some would argue that I practice some so-called pagan arts. For centuries my ancestors have practiced a sort of combination, if you will, of Catholic and native traditions. anyway, long story short ~ I like this book and while it doesn't really have any traditions my family would have practiced and mostly focuses on Old World (European) rites/traditions, I still find it interesting. it's not nearly as good as "Earth power" but a good read anyway. take it from me, Scott Cunningham is the perfect author for non-wiccans/pagans looking for good books on invoking the earth: nothing that offends unlike many others on the genre.

5 out of 5 stars Great buy.......2007-03-15

I've owned this book for quite some time, and I use it as a reference guide for both daily household spells and specific issues. It's very well written; I can see Cunningham in my mind's eye while reading this. He really put his heart and soul into these books.

This was the first of his books that I bought. When I was a bit younger and first getting interested in Magic, I was ploughing through a pile of "New Age" books, and came across this. Even though it's an extension of one of his other books, it doesn't have to be read like that. He refers back to it a couple of times, but it's really a guide, and ought to be used as thus.

I highly recommend it. Whether you're beginning or just want to brush up on some other spells, this guide is beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars A Little Piece of the Disney Magic.......2007-06-28

The Walt Disney World Trivia Book is like the friend I've always wanted who flies me down to Disney (for free!)and proceeds to take me through every park, attraction, and resort, telling me things I never knew about my favorite place. With a loyalty only a true Disney connoisseur can possess ("ever hear of some guy named 'Bugs Bunny'? Hmph. Me neither."), Lou presents his information the way I like it-it's personal, frank, and fun. Kind of like Lou himself...drop him an e-mail, and you actually get an answer! If there is one Disney informant to swear by, it's Lou Mongello. Some of his facts I knew, some made me laugh, and some made me realize that perhaps I'm not the Disney expert I make myself out to be. All I know is that those around me will have to endure new rounds of Disney fact-spouting. I almost feel bad for them. They had assumed they were safe after our (sniff!) last Disney trip in 2005. Although I shouldn't really mourn the trip's passing; with the WDW Trivia Book, I'm there all over again.

5 out of 5 stars Fun Facts - Everything you should know about Walt Disney World!.......2007-05-23

I purchased Lou's book after I had found his website when I was planning my latest trip to Walt Disney World. After looking at his site and even signing up for the forum, I knew I had to purchase this book I'd been reading about! And I am so glad I did. The trivia is fun if you're reading alone or if you take turns reading with a partner and it's multiple choice too. Even more, the answers are found following each section with a short statement to provide further information about the correct answer. What I really love about this book is that the layout makes it a simplistic read that doesn't get boring. Even though it isn't a guide book, anyone (or any family) planning to take a trip to WDW can benefit from the exciting learning experience the book has to offer. It is a must read for first timers and fanatics!

5 out of 5 stars Disney Trivia.......2007-01-30

Fantastic book! What you may have thought you knew...but didn't! An interesting book of facts that help you understand the making of Walt Disney World. A must have book for Disney mania! Volume 1 is just as interesting!

5 out of 5 stars Amusing means to while away time in the car.......2006-11-05

Written by Louis M. Mongello, The Walt Disney World Trivia Book: More Secrets, History & Fun Facts Behind The Magic is an all-new, unofficial multiple choice trivia book. Half the book is devoted to hundreds of multiple choice questions; the other half answers each question at length with fascinating tidbits about the history and operation of Walt Disney World. Enumerated questions and answers are in separate sections for easy self-quizzing. "You'll find what on top of the hot air balloon at the center of 'Dumbo the Flying Elephant'? - Perched atop the balloon is none other than Dumbo's friend, Timothy J. Mouse, who helped Dumbo discover the ability to fly using his oversized ears." Black-and-white photographs, "Did You Know?" bars, and an index round out this amusing means to while away time in the car while driving to Disney World.

5 out of 5 stars Another Hit from Lou!.......2006-10-19

Lou has done it again!

After the first book, I guessed that the second volume would be filled with far less interesting, far more obscure facts, since the first one seemed to have all the big stuff in it. WRONG! Lou has dug up enough tidbits on the Magic Kingdom and evirons that make this more than just for the Disney-fanatics like himself and his podcast fans. He makes the book interesting for anyone who likes Walt Disney World.

While it is not a guidebook, I would recommend it to any family planning a Walt Disney World vacation as a great way to get psyched up for the trip.

Thanks Lou!

4 out of 5 stars The next step up............2006-01-03

This teaches you more techniques to use in candle magick. You get to use stones now!!! Again... very informative.... but not enough useful spells/rituals. Get practical candleburning rituals with this book.

4 out of 5 stars More Complicated.......2005-07-08

I of course tried Buckland's Practical Candle Magick with success and was curious I got this but advanced does mean advanced. I agree with one other review- dress the candles? Where I live in the Twin Ports area who can get stuff like candles and incense and also pentagram amulets, etc at local stores even something like Wal Mart had roly poly votive holders the same ones as seen on online occult shops. I haven't tried any of these yet. A lot of where the advanced part comes in a lot of this stuff is hard to get and pricey- like a crystal ball those are usually at least 50 bucks. Not as well suited for younger audiences who rely mostly on money from parents plus whatever they get these odd jobs here and there like mowing lawns or babysitting but still barely anything like 20 bucks. Overall, I would still say this is worth getting but a little on the tacky side with some unintentional humor with the drawings. I want to try the puberty spell- I want to grow a habdlebar mustache.

5 out of 5 stars He really means it- Advanced!!!.......2003-11-19

I love this book. I bought the two- his first candle ritual book and tried the spells with success ofcoarse. This book is advaced and offers more rituals like contacting the deceased of a loved one. Im right now gathering the required elements to contact my grandma and confers with her. Anyone who cares wish me luck and blessings.- Anthony G. Oh and buy this book!

4 out of 5 stars Get over yourself. It's not that bad........2003-03-25

Okay, okay. I'm the first to admit that "Turn Your Boyfriend Into A Toad--The Like, Omigod! Bridget Jones Guide To LUV spells" books are INANE. But some of this criticism is a bit harsh. Yes, this book is a simple spell book (despite the advanced title). You won't find abstract keys to spiritual mysteries (and I have a feeling that if Buckland did this, the same naysayers would be frothing at the mouth at him 'breaking his vows'. You can't please anyone. Although I do suspect that THAT is the point: most people want to be the chosen few who get to do witchcraft and LOVE when a writer wastes the 'average joe' or 'average jane's' money with abstract ... that won't accomplish anything except for a strict minority of high priestesses/priests of certain elitist covens. But I digress). What you will find is some rituals that MAY or MAY NOT do anything...it all depends on the individual practitioner's will, power-raising, etc. Which is what kills me about the skeptic who wrote the facetious review ("That's what these books are all about, made up stuff, tee hee, I'm so clever and sarcastic"): He (or she) can "prove" that magic(k) is a sham by doing a ritual without ANY intention of sincerity, effort, or emotion(I doubt these types even have any, the world is just one big ironic Quentin Tarantino film for them) and say "Just as I thought, it's all B.S." It's like the typical hardcore atheist/paranormal debunker who responds to the suggestion of realms beyond what is visible/audible with the catch-all "If I can't see it, It's not there." Circular reasoning, sarcasm, and skepticism--what a great combination. (There. I can be sarcastic too. It doesn't take much skill). Anyway, back to Buckland's book. For the minority of us out there who don't either a. like to make fun of things we can't always see with the five known senses or b. like to dismiss anything that is marketed to people who want to alter their lives in a positive manner rather than engage in high esoteric rituals and/or elitist spiritual navel-gazing, this is not a bad book. Yes, a bit simplistic (The five page chapter on Voodoo and Black Magic was the epitome of this)--especially for a book called "Advanced". But, hey, I'd certainly get more out of this book than yet another hodgepodge of philosophizing on The Tree of Life without ANY practical applications.

5 out of 5 stars For those familiar with MAGENTA and the more advanced stampers.......2007-08-22

I have loved the MAGENTA products since I started stamping about 10+ yrs ago. I am very familiar with the "MAGENTA-style-stamping" since I have taken a few "advanced" stamping workshops using MAGENTA products.

Anyhow, this book is probably the only book out there written about MAGENTA STYLE STAMPING (by Nathalie Metivier), and therefore, if you are a MAGENTA stamp lover, like me, then this book is a must!

I am thrilled to have bought this book and have been drooling over the photos all week!
I have bookmarked many craft ideas presented in this book already, and I will be reproducing them very soon. Can't wait!

Another point I have to make is this: .... if you are just starting out in the rubber stamping arena, then this book could be a bit overwhelming. My suggestion is that if you are just starting out with any rubber-stamping crafts, then I'd suggest taking at least one "rubber stamping 101" course (for example: at your local Scrapbook store), to get a "feel" for the Magenta-Style. Once a beginner understands how the Magenta-Style works, then this book will make more sense.

4 out of 5 stars Hard to find items.......2007-06-27

I like the book and the directions. However, I have not found the basic Magenta prodect on which the book is based at any of the local craft shops.

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful!.......2007-06-08

One of the most beautiful and informative papercraft books I've ever seen! Exactly what I've been looking for. Highly recommend it for all paper-crafters!

5 out of 5 stars Love This Book.......2007-03-09

This is an absolutely great book. So many techniques and projects to do. The photos and instructions for everything is done up very well and easy to understand. It is definitely worth the price.

5 out of 5 stars thanks for the daily bread.......2007-02-23

Somebody wondered what the magic was in this book--well, I bought a Cuisinart convection bread machine and was terribly disappointed with the recipes from the accompanying booklet. Half the time I opened the lid to see an unmixed, hardened mess. Then I read customer reviews and people recommended getting another recipe book as the Cuisinart one was off in many of the proportions. I got Bread Machine Magic, and relatively speaking, it is. The loaves at least work, taste great (much better than store bread) and the recipes are pretty varied and interesting. My favorite: Oatmeal marmelade.

3 out of 5 stars Not sure about these.......2007-01-21

Havn't tryed any of these yet but will soon. The recipes are well writen ans seem to be easy to follow.

5 out of 5 stars Expand your breadmaking horizons beyond the basics.......2006-09-09

First of all, someone below posted "I've found so many other books that are much better..." (or something to that effect). If so, please recommend them!

I love this book. I was a novice breadmachine user when I bought the authors' first book. The second was given to me as a gift after having become a breadmachine ONLY bread household for 1 1/2 years. (The only thing we buy are artisinal loaves and sourdough...I just can't get the hang of it.)

Every loaf I have made from this book has turned out superbly. The introduction has been very useful, as well. It seems like the authors learned a lot since their first book was published, and passed along some really good hints.

For sure try the tomato pesto mozzarella. YUMMMMMMYYYY!!!!

3 out of 5 stars I really expected MAGIC.......2006-03-17

I was hoping for something more unusual ... but then I still believe in the tooth fairy.

5 out of 5 stars awesome tricks with ordinary cards.......2007-09-13

this book along with fulves first one are staples in my magic. The tricks will leave your audience amazed especially because you can use a borrowed ordinary deck of cards. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves magic.

4 out of 5 stars Excelent choice.......2005-12-23

I actually prefer this book to the first one. If you have any doubt about the effects in this book just learn the very first trick. I've used it for years and it just knocks people off their feet. Now, I do a lot of sleight of hand magic but a trick doesn't have to be difficult to be good. It's the crowd response that counts.

Like most of these Dover magic books, there are some real stinkers in there. But if you pick and choose you can find some real gems.

This is an excelent book for a young magician just starting out. It's a good choice overall.

4 out of 5 stars Good Beginner Book.......2005-11-23

All of Karl Fulves books are good for beginning magicians. When you read the effects they seem very simplistic, but with good presentations everything is very usable material. As a professional magician I am often asked where to start learning effects and this would be a good place.

5 out of 5 stars Another great book!.......2002-04-07

This is another really fine book of material for the average magician. Much is from 'Pallbeares Review', a magazine published by the author, and now considered one of the best sources for excellent material.
Many of the effects in this book are mathematical, and will fool most people, including magicians. The nice part is that you don't have to understand the mathematics, or why it works, to be able to do it. All that is required is attention to detail and good audience management. For that reason, the magician-to-be should be at least 12 years old, although some of the tricks could be done by someone who is younger.

1 out of 5 stars Never get Self Working books.......2001-06-24

I have wasted hours and hours reading these selfworking books and have learned ONE trick which is foolproof and i like greatly. All the other tricks are so easy to figure out or mathematical which is not very impressive. It is in these type books that mathematical tricks that have ruined card magic are learned. I used to think card magic ... until finally I saw some good card tricks. All the goodcard tricks i have ever seen require sleights, such as the glide, double lift, false shuffles, or else need gimmmicks that can be examined like the short card and stripper deck. These self working books have tricks without sleights or gimichs. Good card tricks don't work if there isn't sleights or examinable genius gimmicks. So don't waste your money on these over priced books

5 out of 5 stars Beautiful book with fun projects that kids love!.......2007-09-26

This is a fabulous book. My three-year-old daughter loves everything I've made out of this book. They are generally durable enough for light play - my daughter is pretty gentle. I enjoy doing these and it's really hours of fun for the kids to play with. Older kids would probably enjoy doing the projects too. They are relatively simple (with help from adults) and are pretty quick. I find finishing one of these dolls or figures extremely gratifying!

5 out of 5 stars Great for 3rd grade and up.......2007-03-18

This one isn't a repeat of the first book in this series -- not at all! Instead it focuses more on creating small figures, toys and dolls, fairies and landscapes for a Seasonal Table. The projects are breathtaking, although very easy if you understand the basics of felting and winding wool. It also contains a short, but detailed section on dyeing wool using plants and other natural materials. Even if you don't dye your own wool, you'll appreciate the process. The hand-felted interactive play mats, complete with hidden spaces, are a completely new idea that children will enjoy using with their new felted animals and dolls. There are so many delightful ideas in this book, you and your children won't know where to start!

5 out of 5 stars great book.......2007-01-23

I like this book even better than the first one. Great photos, nice ideas.

Book Description

This omnibus edition brings back into print three classic volumes of stories by Larry Niven and other acclaimed authors, all working within Niven's acclaimed "Magic" universe: THE MAGIC GOES AWAY; THE MAGIC MAY RETURN; and MORE MAGIC. This fantasy realm is the basis for Larry Niven and Jerry Pournelle's THE BURNING CITY, as well as the forthcoming BURNING TOWER. THE MAGIC GOES AWAY contains twelve stories by Niven; THE MAGIC MAY RETURN contains one story by Niven and contributions by Fred Saberhagen, Dean Ing, Steven Barnes, Mildred Downey Broxon, and Poul Anderson; and MORE MAGIC contains two Niven stories and additional contributions by Bob Shaw, Dian Girard, and legendary author Roger Zelazny.

Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Variable quality, but engaging "SF-fantasy" from 9 authors.......2007-03-25

Larry Niven fans should be aware that this book features work by nine authors, including Niven himself. He contributes a one-page introduction, "The Magic Goes Away" itself, "Not Long Before The End", and "The Lion In His Attic". There is also "Talisman", a collaboration between Niven and Dian Girard. Of the 358 pages, Niven alone contributes 125 (35 percent); if you include "The Talisman", this rises to 160 pages (45 percent).

For my money, the first two stories stand head and shoulders above the rest (with one exception). "The Magic Goes Away" is more of a novella than a novel, running just 90 pages, but its striking originality makes it linger in your mind. The basic thesis is that magic used to exist, long ago, but that it depended on a natural resource called mana which the magicians of the time depleted, just as we are using up fossil fuels. This simple change to our understanding of the universe allows Niven to construct an elaborate "alternative history" while technically keeping one foot in the domain of science fiction. For instance, we read how Atlantis was preserved by spells woven by its priest-kings, which gave way when Greek invaders killed the priests. The plot concerns how a group of sorcerers join together, in spite of powerful enmity and distrust, to find some new source of mana - without which their longevity spells will lapse, dooming them to immediate death (as they are all hundreds of years old). Their quest involves crossing the ocean on cloud-tops, and planning to steal the last surviving god from its place of rest.

"Not Long Before The End" is a "prequel" to "The Magic Goes Away", giving a full account of a critical incident merely referred to in the earlier story. Although only ten pages long, it has the mixture of excitement and intellectual adventure that characterize Niven's best work. "The Lion In His Attic" is set in a drowned castle, years after the flooding of Atlantis. Two strangers arrive, ostensibly on honeymoon, but actually seeking a magic emerald. They make the mistake of underestimating the "lion" of the title, who is actually a were-sealion. "The Talisman", co-authored with Dian Girard, though perhaps less ambitious and more subtle, paints an equally fascinating picture of magicians, thieves, kings, and soldiers.

The other stories are a mixed bunch, but none of them is less than readable. Fred Saberhagen contributes "Earthshade", an elegant miniature that neatly imports the Greek pantheon into Niven's "magic" universe. Less exalted, earthier and more complicated is Dean Ing's "Manaspill", which deals with how a court magician might use a windfall of mana to further his ambitions. I admit to being rather baffled by Steven Barnes' "...But Fear Itself", with its mystical vision of an enslaved tribe that uses the magical power of its children to wreak a terrible revenge on their oppressors. Poul Anderson is a writer whose books I have alway enjoyed, and "Strength", which he co-wrote with Mildred Downey Broxon, is the sort of post-apocalyptic adventure in which he excels. Shalindra, the widow of a sorcerer, rescues the hunter and practical man Brandek after a shipwreck, and the story develops the tension between her yearning after the old ways of magic and his determination to make a fresh start using simple technology.

Then we come to "The Shadow Of Wings" by Bob Shaw, another fine example of the "magician conspiring against the king" sub-genre. Even King Marcurades, who comes across as a blend of Alexander the Great and Edison, is a pawn in the hands of those who control mana - as long as they do control it, that is. And then, just as the book is nearly finished, we come to the best surprise of all: a fine piece of work by no less an author than Roger Zelazny! The protagonist of "Mana From Heaven" is a sorcerer at the height of his powers, but he is threatened by unknown assailants for reasons he cannot guess. No one has ever been better at telling this kind of story, and Zelazny does not disappoint.

I began by being aggrieved that Niven had written less than half of this book, but the more I read the more I liked it. The other authors (apart from Zelazny) may not quite rise to the levels of which Niven is capable, but they introduce a fascinating variety of points of view and emotional climates. All in all, strongly recommended!

5 out of 5 stars It's about time.......2005-02-07

Larry Niven, primarily known for his hard science fiction, is equally adept at fantasy. "The Magic Goes Away", his masterpiece in this genre, has been out of print for years, and increasingly difficult to obtain. At last, it is available again.

4 out of 5 stars A must.......2007-02-07

This book is a necessary addon for the RPG, so it must be purchased. It add some good stuff and all the spells.

1 out of 5 stars Mistaken Identity.......2007-01-11

As any WOW fan would know it is an online world full of advantture and role playing. The world is complex and difficult to learn for a newbie. So a book on how to navigate this complex world, full of hints and tips would be very helpful. Even at the heavey price of this book! Well this book with its hardcover and hundreds of pages of information does not have anything in it about the online role playing. It is printed as a optional board game for people who prefer playing a dundeons and dragons scenerio. This book is very misleading in its content and worthless to the online gaming fan.

4 out of 5 stars Good...but one small thing..........2006-02-07

I won't go into a detailed review here as those above have covered it quite well and I don't want to end up repeating what was said, but there was one small problem I did have...in the magic items second set items from the MMORPG were mentioned...but strangely enough not all the basic suits were covered. Where is the Dreadmist, the Wildheart, etc. Even the tier I epics are not covered (which I can accept that one),but the other zero tier's should have also been there. But again this is a small problem in what is otherwise an excellent book.

4 out of 5 stars A solid 'rules crunch' supplement.......2005-12-27

More Magic and Mayhem adds magical, alchemical, runic, and technological options to the World of Warcraft RPG. Other than the occasional editing gaff and one minor annoyance, it's a great buy. Note that this is NOT a stand alone role playing game. If you do not own the World of Warcraft RPG (the hardback, not the PC game), it is pretty useless on its own. The rest of this review assumes that the reader is familiar with the (hardback) World of Warcraft RPG.

There are three new classes: The Inscriber is an Arcanist variant that can use individual Runes. The Witch Doctor is a Healer variant that has special abilities (cheesily labeled 'Mojo') that enable it to create especially potent magic potions. The RuneMaster emblazons Runes on his body to augment it in various ways, and can also cast Runes from Rune Patterns. The class concept is utterly opposite of a typical Dungeons and Dragon's Monk, but outside of casting Runes the class abilities are similar: extra damage from unarmed strikes, fast movement, immunity to disease, extra attacks during a round but each attack is at a -2 to hit, etc... etc... The main difference is that a Runemaster has a list of special abilities to choose and may pick one at level 1 and every 3 levels after.

There are four prestige classes. The Argent Dawn Templar sacrifices class abilities in gained from previous classes in order to gain powerful new abilities. The Enchanter captures the energies released when a magic item is destroyed and can use that energy to add new abilities to other items. If your high level party has three dozen +1 magic items lying around, he can turn them into a pile of scrap metal and a +5 magic item in a matter of hours. The Ley Walker uses the ley line energy that crisscrosses the universe. She can grant herself fast healing for a few rounds, spontaneously cast dimension door or teleport, use a small number of metamagic feats without using a higher spell slot, and change any damaging spell to do half of its damage as 'ley' damage - which cannot be resisted. The Steam Warrior specializes in piloting Steam Armor.

There's a nice selection of new feats. Most revolve around runes and runecasting or the new rules for Alchemy. The Alchemy section has dozens of new concoctions an alchemist can create. They offer substantial benefits - +4 to an ability for an hour, recovering 6 levels of spell slots, invisibility, healing 8d6 damage. On the other hand, using the Craft (Alchemy) rules from the main book means that the typical PC or NPC that does alchemy work will require a week or two to craft a very simple elixer and months to put together a complex one.

The Runes introduced into the book all fall into categories called Rune patterns. The Inscriber class learns individual runes just like spells. The RuneMaster class attunes himself to one pattern at a time (more than one pattern at a time with feats), and can cast any rune within his attuned rune pattern by spending a spell slot of the corresponding level.

The spell section introduces a new action type to the game, a 'Swift' Action. A swift action is like a Dungeons and Dragons free action, but a PC can only make one per round. Some spells can be cast as swift actions. A small variety of new spells are introduced.

The magical item section is huge. The technological item section is nice, but it would have been nice to see something nearly as big as the magic item section. Technological 'Mods' add technological features to existing items, like rapid reload for firearms, vibrating blades, and armor that shocks those that touch it.

The last bit delves into a new system for determining the capabilities and features of steam armor. These rules replace the ones in the World of Warcraft book. (That is my annoyance with the book, which I mentioned at the beginning. I dislike when a new set of rules just ignores the previous set, instead of building upon it.) They cover such things as passenger compartments, extra shielding, adding hit points, etc... etc...
My only other pet pieve for this section is that size Large and Huge steam armor boosts the wearer's Strength by +10 and +15, respectively. I would think it more logical to provide independent Str scores for the armor once it reached a certain size. Goblins are among the foremost Steam Armor builders on Azeroth, and their -2 racial Strength penalty make them a poor choice for Combat Steam Armor pilots.

The only thing I hoped for but did not see was rules for the creation of Phlogiston, the special fuel many Warcraft technological devices require. Apparently 'Magic & Mayhem' details its creation, but this book does not.

4 out of 5 stars Solid Companion Volume, but journeyman errors abound.......2005-12-07

As a freelance RPG writer with very little actual printed work under my belt (so many unprinted, but paid for, products... *sigh*), I know that my opinion on such things is not often asked for, but here in this review I will give it, nonetheless. Simply and objectively put, this is a solid, well designed supplement. It contains nothing that supercedes the original Magic and Mayhem too terribly, although it does reprint some items whose creation methods and overall effects have changed between V3.0 and V3.5 "fantasy roleplay" (Just say it, D&D). The reprints are useful, however, and well described. The feats are, by and large, balanced and well composed, as are the spells (finally, Mages can use Firebolt!). While I personally would have added rules to the Core Classes for such things as the Paladin's new Seal spells (making them class abilities instead of wasting precious spell slots on them), or made Enchantment a series of Feats on the same level as Alchemy (thus allowing any character with the inclination to become an Enchanter), the methods used here are stable enough to be adapted to just about any game.

However, this book, much like the new edition of the WoW RPG, suffers from journeyman level editorial and proofreading mistakes that, honestly, should have been caught - a simple spell check would have done it. Page 196, for instance, the word "at6" in the Exploding Sheep description would have become the appropriate "at" had the body text been spellchecked. Also, much like the new WoW book, stylistic errors are also present in a good many places, such as a style type marker for the Shaman/Witch Doctor 2nd Level Spell list being retained instead of the proper style being implemented. Widows and Orphans - hanging sentences or "abandoned" words and sentences - are not as prevalent in this text as in others, but are still there. I admit I haven't been looking for it very hard, but thus far, I have not seen the customary "Page XX" reference.

A solid book, with some very easily-caught (at least I would have thought so), mistakes. Overall, I'm very impressed by it.

I got this book as a Christmas present, and wow, it's a gardener's dream. Instead of running out to the gardening shop to get expensive pesticides or plant foods and what have you, this book tells you what common household products you've already got around the house can be used to solve your gardening problems...saving time, money, and definitely saving you lots of aggravation. Plus, the tips are all environmental so you're not using hazardous pesticides, just friendly products like Maxwell House coffee and Pam cooking spray and Coca-Cola and whatever else you have around the house. This book is truly a must for any home gardener. I don't know how I ever got along without it.

The contents are not reflective of the title. A large part of the text covers non gardening trivia. This book would be about half it's size, with the unrelated items taken out.

If you are looking for a book covering such topics as Cracker Jack, Gilligan's Island, Love Boat, the history of the Slinky toy (almost two pages), Go-Jo hand cleaner, Animal Crackers and KoolAid (each a full page), cap guns and similar, then this is the book for you.
